Growth rates, ingestion rates and grazer yields (grazer volumeproduced/prey volume consumed) were measured for six protozoanspecies (ciliates: Favella sp., Strombidinopsis acuminatum,Uronema sp.; heterotrophic dinoflagellates: Amphidinium sp.,Gymnodinium sp., Noctiluca scintillans) in laboratory batchculture experiments. Comparative growth data indicate that theprymnesiophyte Isochrysis galbana, the prasinophyte Mantoniellasquamata, two cryptophyte species and several autotrophic dinoflagellatespecies were suitable foods for these grazers. When grown onoptimized diets at 13C, maximum ciliate growth rates (range0.77–1.01 day–1 uniformly exceeded maximum heterotrophicdioflagellate growth rates (range 0.41–0.48 day–1).A compilation of published data demonstrates that this growthrate difference persists across a range of ciliate and dinoflagellatetaxa and cell sizes. Comparison of volume-specific ingestionrates and yields for the six species studied here showed thatthere was no single explanation for this growth rate disparity.Heterotrophic dinoflagellates exhibited both low ingestion ratesand, in one case, low yields; ciliates were able to achievehigher growth rates via either higher ingestion rates or higheryields, depending on ciliate species. Volume yield increasedover time throughout the exponential growth phase in nearlyall experiments, suggesting variation in response to changingfood concentrations or long-term acclimation to culture conditions.Higher maximum ciliate growth rates mean that these grazershave the potential to exercise tighter control over incipientblooms of their prey than do heterotrophic dinoflagellates.  相似文献

Daphnia can suppress ciliates and rotifers through predationand interference competition, but it is not known whether thisproduces any direct benefit to Daphnia. We conducted survivorshipand cohort lifetable experiments to determine whether Daphniacan utilize ciliates and rotifers as food. Three species ofoligotrich ciliates (Halteria grandinella, Strobilidium gyransand Strobilidiumvelox) and one rotifer (Keratella cochlearis)were used. Lifetable experiments were conducted with a basallevel of algae (Cryptomonas sp.), plus either ciliates or rotifers, while survivorship experiments had only the rotifers or ciliates.Densities of 30 H.grandinella ml–1, 50 S.gyrans ml–1and 15 S.velox ml–1 enhanced Daphnia pulex's populationgrowth rate 35–50% over controls with only algae. TenS.gyrans ml–1 did not produce a significant change inDaphnia's growth rate. Densities of 100 and 300 K.cochlearis–1 increased Daphnia population growth rates by II and10%, respectively. Both 10 and 50 S.gyrans ml–1 enhancedDaphnia's survivorship compared to starved controls, but neither100 nor 300 K.cochlearis l–1 enhanced its survivorship. The amount of enhancement of Daphnia growth rates by rotifersand ciliates is roughly proportional to the death rates imposedby Daphnia. The death rate imposed by Daphnia on rotifers isa function of both algal density and Daphnia size. Per unitbiomass, neither ciliates nor Keratella appear to be as nutritiousfor Daphnia as is Cryptomonas.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to measure to what extent cyclopoidcopepods ingest ciliated protists. Five freshwater ciliate species, ranging in size from 22 to 120 µm diameter, were testedwith two species of cyclopoids: Cyclops abyssorum and Cyclopskolensis. Ingestion rates were measured by radiolabeling ciliateswith 14C, and from these, functional response curves (the changein ingestion rate with changing cell densities) were constructed.Cyclopoids ingest ciliates with very high estimated maximalrates of >200 cells cyclopoid–1 h–1 However, there are large differences in ingestion rates that are notpredictable by the size of predator or prey. One ciliate speciesof intermediate size, Coleps hirtus, is nearly immune from cyclopoidpredation at all measured ciliate densities. Three other smallciliate species that move in rapid jumps elicit Honing type3 functional responses, with very little change in ingestionrates at low ciliate densities. Thus, while cyclopoids are capableof having a very considerable impact on ciliate populations, some ciliate species appear to have behavioral, morphologicalor chemical defenses to reduce their vulnerability. This callsinto question the practice of considering ciliates a homogeneousgroup when constructing food web models.  相似文献

The abundance and biomass of marine planktonic ciliates in BorgeBay, Signy Island, were determined at monthly intervals betweenApril 1990 and June 1991. At least 24 different ciliate taxawere recorded from samples preserved in Lugol's iodine, includingthe tintinnids Codonellopsis balechi, Cymalocylis convallaria,Laackmaniella naviculaefera and Salpingella sp., and the aloricatetaxa Didinium sp. and Mesodinium rubrum. Ciliate abundance andbiomass exhibited a clear seasonal cycle with high values duringthe austral summer and low values in the austral winter. Abundanceranged from 0.3 103l–1 in September to 2.3 103l–1in January, while biomass ranged from 0.5 µg C l–1in October to 12.6 µg C l–1 in December. Small ciliatesdominated abundance throughout the year, and biomass duringwinter. Larger ciliates contributed most to biomass during summer.Aloricate ciliates were common throughout the year, while tintinnidscontributed substantially to abundance and biomass only duringsummer. Salpingella sp. was the commonest tintinnid, but C.convallariacontributed most to tintinnid biomass. The seasonal patternof ciliate abundance and biomass matched that of chlorophylla concentration and bacterial biomass, suggesting tight trophiccoupling between ciliates and other components of the pelagicmicrobial community. 1Present address: Scott Polar Research Institute, Universityof Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge CB2 1ER, UK  相似文献

A procedure was developed to estimate the direct grazing impacton free-living heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF). Culturedflagellates were labelled by feeding on brightly fluorescingbacteria (FLB) and then offered as indirectly fluorescentlylabelled flagellates (IFLF) to potential predators of HNF. Thenumber of FLB in the predators' food vacuoles could be convertedinto IFLF uptake and consumption of HNF. This new techniquewas used to study the HNF-ciliate relationship in the pelagiczone of Lake Constance. Three groups of ciliates were detectedas HNF grazers: small representatives of the genus Strobilidium.a small Haltena-like ciliate (probably Halteria grandinella)and a Codonella sp. Tintinnidium sp. group The ingestion ofHNF by these groups of ciliates ranged between 3 and 15, 3 and39, and 3 and 7 HNF ciliate–1 h–1; respectively. The IFLF method allows the direct determination of ingestedflagellate prey in the food vacuoles of their predators. Becauseindigenous living prey organisms were used, tracer discriminationcan be reduced.  相似文献

Effect of temperature on growth and ingestion rates of Favella sp   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study describes the effect of temperature on the growthand ingestion rates of the tintinnid, Favella sp. cultured withthe dinoflagellate Heterocapsa triquetra. In vivo fluorescencewas used to monitor the change in density of the H. triquetrapopulation over 4- to 5-day periods in control tubes containingonly algae, and in experimental tubes containing algae and tintinnids.A ‘switchover point’ occurred in the temperaturedependency of the growth rate such that below 11.4°C, H.triquetra grew more quickly than Favella sp. and above thistemperature the situation was reversed. Ingestion rates of Favellaon H. triquetra were found to be temperature dependent in anonlinear fashion. The rate doubled (from 2.5 to 5.3 cells animal–1h–1) between 11.4 and 16.4°C whereas there was nochange in ingestion rates between 8.0 and 11.4°C, or between16.4 and 21.1°C.  相似文献

Ephyra larvae and small medusae (1.7–95 mm diameter, 0.01–350mg ash-free dry wt, AFDW) of the scyphozoan jellyfish Aureliaaurita were used in predation experiments with phytoplankton(the flagellate Isochrysis galbana, 4 µm diameter, {smalltilde}6 x 10–6 µg AFDW cell–1), ciliates (theoligotrich Strombidium sulcatum, 28 µm diameter, {smalltilde}2 x 10–3 µg AFDW), rotifers (Synchaeta sp.,0.5 µg AFDW individual–1) and mixed zooplankton(mainly copepods and cladocerans, 2.1–3.1 µg AFDWindividual–1). Phytoplankton in natural concentrations(50–200 µg C I–1) were not utilized by largemedusae (44–95 mm diameter). Ciliates in concentrationsfrom 0.5 to 50 individuals ml"1 were consumed by ephyra larvaeand small medusae (3–14 mm diameter) at a maximum predationrate of 171 prey day–1, corresponding to a daily rationof 0.42%. The rotifer Synchaeta sp., offered in concentrationsof 100–600 prey I–1, resulted in daily rations ofephyra larvae (2–5 mm diameter) between 1 and 13%. Mixedzooplankton allowed the highest daily rations, usually in therange 5–40%. Large medusae (>45 mm diameter) consumedbetween 2000 and 3500 prey organisms day"1 in prey concentrationsexceeding 100 I–1. Predation rate and daily ration werepositively correlated with prey abundance. Seen over a broadsize spectrum, the daily ration decreased with increased medusasize. The daily rations observed in high abundance of mixedzooplankton suggest a potential ‘scope for growth’that exceeds the growth rate observed in field populations, and this, in turn, suggests that the natural populations areusually food limited. The predicted predation rate at averageprey concentrations that are characteristic of neritic environmentscannot explain the maximum growth rates observed in field populations. It is therefore suggested that exploitation of patches of preyin high abundance is an important component in the trophodynamicsof this species. 1Present address: University of Bergen, Department of MarineBiology, N-5065 Blomsterdalen, Norway  相似文献

Deep algal maxima are frequently overlayed by dense populationsof ciliates, rotifers and crustaceans. This has been interpretedas evidence of heavy predation on the algae, although the impactof this predation has never been determined experimentally. We determined the vertical and seasonal distribution of thealga Cryptomonas phaseolus and its most relevant predators, the ciliates Coleps sp. and Prorodon sp., forming metalimneticmaxima in Lake Cisó. On several dates, in situ feedingrates of ciliates were determined by three independent methods:(i) epifluorescence counts of ingested algal cells togetherwith estimates of the food turnover time of the ciliates; (ii)in situ incubations with radioactively labeled algae: (iii)HPLC determination of alloxanthine content in the predator sizefraction. Feeding rates varied between 0.07 and 0.64 Cryptomonasciliate–1 h–1. We then calculated integrated predationon the algae. using the functional response of the ciliatesand the vertical distribution of each population. We found thateven though the ciliates were always food saturated, their predationimpact on Cryptomonas was not very large: as an average, 5–25%of the biomass of Cryptomonas was removed daily by the ciliates. Finally, we studied the effects of the diel vertical movementsof these populations on predation impact. By migrating intothe sulfide-rich hypolimnion during the night, Cryptomonas couldreduce its predation losses by 38%. Thus, the algae were protectedfrom predation during several hours of each diel cycle and maintaineda very large biomass throughout stratification, although thisresulted in a very slow growth. Slow growth, coupled to largebiomass, seems to be a general feature of metalimnetic accumulationsof organisms.  相似文献

The total number of planktonic bacteria in the upper mixed layerof the Bering Sea during the late spring-early summer periodranged between 1 and {small tilde}4 x 106 ml–1 (biomass10–40mg C m–3). In the northern Pacific, along 47–526N,the corresponding characteristics of the bacterioplankton densityin the upper mixed water layer were: total number 1–2x 106 cells ml–1 and biomass 15–46mg C m–3Below the thermocline at 50–100 m, the density of bacterioplanktonrapidly decreased. At 300 m depth, it stabilized at 0.1–0.2x 106 cells ml–1. The integrated biomass of bacterioplanktonin the open Bering Sea ranged between 1.2 and 3.6 g C m–2(wet biomass 6–18 g m–2) Its production per dayvaried from 2 to 23 mg C m–3 days–1 in the upper0–100 m. The numerical abundance of planktonic ciliatesin this layer was estimated to be from 3 to l0 x 103 cells l–1,and in the northern Pacific from 0.4 to 4.5 x 103 l–2.Their populations were dominated by naked forms of Strombidium,Strombilidium and Tontonia. In some shelf areas, up to 40% ofthe total ciliate population was represented by the symbioticciliate Mesodinium rubrum. The data on the integrated biomassof basic groups of planktonic microheterotrophs are also presented, and their importance in the trophic relationships in pelagiccommunities of subarctic seas is discussed.  相似文献

Small, aloricate ciliates dominated the biomass of heterotrophicprotists throughout the water column at the end of the periodof stratification in Lake Kinneret, Israel The integrated biomassof cilates was 5–20 times that of heterotrophic flagellatesDuring incubation experiments, ciliate growth rates in cpilimneticwater corresponded to population doubling times of 9.6–19.4h, while flagellate populations showed no growth. Most of thealiates were small forms (10–30 µm long), includingscuticocihates, choreotnchs, Coleps spp. and Colpoda spp., andappeared to be consuming bacteria, coccoid cyanobacteria, and<5 µm eukaryotic algae. Grazing rates of cihate assemblageson picoplankton in the epilimnion, as determined by the uptakeof fluorescently labeled bacteria and cyanobactena, ranged from62 to 86 nl cell1 h1 Colpoda steini, isolatedfrom lakewater, grew on a cultured freshwater Synechococcussp with a doubling time of 4.5 h, and a gross growth efficiencyof 48% The estimated daily requirements of ciliates for growthapproximately equalled total phytoplankton production. We calculatedthat ciliates in the epilimnion were clearing 4–10% ofthe bacterioplankton and cyanobactenal standing stocks per daySince this would not be sufficient food consumption to meetdaily carbon requirements of the aliates, it is likely thatthese organisms were also grazing a significant amount of autotrophicand heterotrophic eukaryotic cells in Lake Kinneret.  相似文献

A method was developed to allow direct measurements of predationexerted by metazooplankton on ciliates. The method relied onthe use of ciliates labelled with fluorescent microparticles(FMP). Optimal labelling conditions were determined with ciliatesfrom cultures (Tetrahymena pyriformis) and with natural ciliateassemblages sampled in a river. Labelled T. pyriformis wereused as tracer food to determine gut passage time (GPT) andingestion rates of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus in thelaboratory. Predation of metazooplankton from the lowland riverMeuse (Belgium) was determined by labelling natural assemblagesof ciliates and using them as tracer food for metazooplankterssampled in the river. Optimal labels of ciliates, i.e. sharpdistribution of FMP in cells, were obtained with short incubations(10 min) and low FMP concentrations (1 x 105 mL–1). GPTvaried between 30 and 45 min for B. calyciflorus and from 25up to >35 min for rotifers from the river. The ingestionrate of B. calyciflorus fed with T. pyriformis was 3.3 ±0.6 ciliate rot–1 h–1, i.e. 1.4 ± 0.3 ngCrot–1 h–1. Metazooplankton species for which theingestion of ciliates could be measured were the rotifers Keratellacochlearis, Euchlanis dilatata and Synchaeta spp. Ingestionrates measured ranged from 0.4 to 12.5 ngC rot–1 h–1.The method proposed proved to be useful in estimating the predationof microplankton on ciliates in semi- in situ conditions; infurther developments, labelled natural assemblages of ciliatescould be used for in situ incubations with the Haney chamber.  相似文献

The levels of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides in suspensioncultures of Catharanthus roseus were determined 24 h after stationary-phasecells were transferred to fresh complete (‘+Pi’)or phosphate-deficient (‘–Pi’) Murashige-Skoogmedium. The levels of ATP, GTP, UTP and CTP were from approx.3 to 5-fold greater in the cells grown in ‘+Pi’medium than in the cells grown in ‘–Pi’ medium. The levels of almost all other nucleotides were slightly higherin the cells in ‘+Pi’ medium. The rates of de novoand salvage biosynthesis of purine and pyrimidine nucleotideswere estimated from the rates of incorporation of radioactivityfrom [14C]formate, [2–14C]glycine, NaH14CO3, [6–14C]orotate,[8–14C]adenine, [8–14C]adenosine, [2–14C]uraciland [2–14C]uridine. The results indicated that the activityof both the de novo and the salvage pathway was higher in thecells in ‘+Pi’ medium than in the cells in ‘–Pi’medium. The rate of degradation estimated from the rate of releaseof 14CO2 from labelled purines and pyrimidines indicated thatdegradation of uridine was significantly reduced in the cellsin ‘+Pi’ medium, but no significant difference wasfound in the degradation of adenine, adenosine and uracil. Thepossible role of Pi in the control of the biosynthesis of nucleotidesand in the degradation of uridine is discussed. In a series of batch experiments in the dark the heterotrophicdinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina grazed three phytoplankton prey(Phaeodactylun tricornutum, Isochrysis galbana and Dunaliellateriolecta) with equal efficiency. Growth rates of the dinoflagellateranged between 0.8 and 1.3 day–1 Maximum observed ingestionrates on a cell basis varied according to the size of the preyfrom about 50 cells flagellate–1 day–1 when D.tertiolectawas the prey to 250–350 cells fiagellate–1 day–1when the other species were eaten. However, when compared ona nitrogen basis, ingestion rates were independent of prey type. Both ingestion and growth ceased when prey cell concentrationsfell below a threshold concentration of about 105 cells ml–1.Maximum specific clearance rates were 0.8x1040ndash;5.7x104it day which is considerably lower than that found for heterotrophicdinoflagellates in oceanic waters and may explain why O.marinagenerally thrives only in productive waters. The timing of NHregeneration was linked to the C:N ratio of the prey at thestart of grazing. Regeneration efficiencies for NH4. never exceeded7%; during the exponential phase and were 45% well into thestationary phase. These results are comparable to those obtainedwith heterotrophic flagellates and demonstrate that the bioenergeticpatterns of grazing and nutrient cycling by different protozoaare very similar. Moreover, they support the notion that toachieve 90+% nutrient regeneration in the open ocean, as iscurrently believed, the microbial food loop must consist ofmultiple feeding steps. Alternatively, nutrient regenerationefficiencies may be considerably lower than 90%.  相似文献

Feeding behavior of the brittle star Ophiura ophiura includesorienting posture, orienting movements, arm ‘walking’,changing the direction of ‘walking’ arm coilingand ingestion. All sequential behavior patterns were releasedor enhanced by single low-molecular-weight compounds. Stimuliwhich released ‘walking’ behavior at high concentrations(10–4 M) in all the test animals are listed in decreasingorder of sensitivity: sarcosine, glycine, urea, L-valine, L-leucine,L-methionine, L-homocysteine, L-norvaline, L-norleucine, L-threonine,L-serine, S-methyl-L-cysteine, L-proline. Threshold values forsingle amino acids were as much as 100 times different in differentindividuals and ranged from 3 x 10–9 to 3 x 10–7M for the most effective stimulus, sarcosine, and from 10–6to 10–4 M for proline. Above 10–5 M, only L-prolineregularly released a second behavior pattern, the arm coilingresponse, which temporarily inhibited the ‘walking’behavior. Behavioral thresholds for the ‘walking’behavior for L(+)-lactate and L-alanine were higher than thosefor the orienting movements. Thyoglycolic acid and ß-alaninereleased tube feet walking, which is not part of the feedingbehavior. Structure—activity comparisons were studied at estimated10–5 M concentrations. Gycline, sarcosine, L-valine, L-norvaline,L-leucine, L-isoleucine, DL-norleucine and DL-homocysteine releasedarm ‘walking’ behavior in more than 75% of all thetests. With the exceptions of S-methyl-and S-ethyl-cysteine,and glycine methylester, derivatives of amino acids were noteffective behavioral stimuli in Ophiura ophiura. L-Isomers ofvaline and leucine regularly stimulated the ‘walking’behavior while their D-isomers were effective in some testsand ineffective in others. Acetylcholine iodide, acetyl-ß-methylcholine chloride and choline phosphate chloride regularly released‘walking’ behavior at concentrations above 10–5M.  相似文献

Biomass and productivity of microplankton were measured in theCraternaya Bay (Kurile Islands), which is influenced by hydrothermalactivity and volcanic heating. The hydrothermal fields are situatedaround its shores and underwater within the 0–20 m depth.A dense ‘bloom’ of photoautotrophic microplanktonwas observed there, dominated by diatoms, phytoflagellates andthe symbiont-containing ciliate Mesodinium rubrum. The biomassof these ciliates attained 3–11 g m-3 in the upper waterlayer. The total biomass of the phototrophic microplankton reached30–46 g m-3. The primary production in the water columnwas, correspondingly, enormously high: 6–10 g C m-2 day-1.The depth of the euphotic zone was 7 m. Pelagic photosynthesiswas inhibited in the upper 0–1 m by the spreading of alayer of low-salinity hydrothermal water. The numerical densityof bacterioplankton in the upper zone of the water column variedfrom 1 x 106 to 2.9 x 106 cells ml-1, and its wet biomass from250 to 750 mg m-3. Its production varied at stations from 70to 390 mg m-3 day-1. Chemosynthesis contributed up to 30% ofthis production in the sites neighbouring the hydrothermal vents.Outside their direct impact however, its share was negligible. The biomass of heterotrophic planktonic ciliates varied from30 to 270 mg m-3. The mechanisms of possible influence of shallowvolcanic activity on development and function of microplanktonin the Craternaya Bay is discussed.  相似文献

Ingestion and clearance rates, feeding behaviors and life historyvariables of the marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris were evaluatedover a range of food concentrations encountered in nature (0.01–3.0mm3 1–1 of Isochrysis galbana). Ingestion rates increasedand clearance rates decreased with increasing food concentration. No maximum feeding thresholds were observed over the range ofalgal concentrations offered. Weight-specific ingestion ratesdecreased with increasing body weight. Feeding behaviors suchas mandibular activity, abdominal claw rejections of cloggedfeeding structures and feeding appendage activity decreasedat a food level of 0.3 mm3 l–1 of l. galbana. Peniliaavirostris had very poor survivorship at extremely low (0.01mm3 l–1 and high (3.00 mm3 l–1) food levels. Mortalitywas hardly affected at food levels of 0.03–1.0 mm3 l–1Reproduction did not occur at food levels of  相似文献

Clupeoid larvae were collected on eight cruises between February1984 and February 1985 in the coastal waters of Israel. Fromanalysis of daily growth increments of otoliths, growth ratesof the abundant clupeoids, Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardusand Sardinella aurita were found to be 0.55 mm day–1,0.67 mm day–1 and 0.60 mm day–1, respectively, duringthe first month after hatching. Ingestion rates were estimatedusing an equation from the literature relating ingestion andgrowth of larval fish. Ingestion calculated for populationsof fish larvae in pelagic waters ranged from 0 to >23 mgC m–2 day–1 with maximum rates observed in April.Annual ingestion by larval fish at a pelagic station near Haifawas calculated to be 2.2 g C m–2 year–1, 10–20%of annual primary production estimated from 14C uptake.  相似文献

In vitrorates of gross and net oxygen production were measuredas a function of light intensity in some plankton communitiescollected from Bedford Basin, Nova Scotia, and in a monoclonalculture of Synechococcus. The rate of gross oxygen productionwas measured by a technique in which the stable oxygen isotope,18O, serves as a photosynthetic tracer Net oxygen productionwas measured by automated Winkler technique. The rate of communityrespiration in the light was then determined by the differencebetween gross and net rates of oxygen production. In the naturalpopulations examined, neither gross nor net oxygen productionrates were significantly inhibited at the highest light intensitymeasured (500–800 µE m–2 s–1) In a samplein which the dark respiration rate was small relative to themaximal rate of production [Pmax;sensu Platt et al (1980) JMar. Res., 38, 687–701] the rates of ‘light’respiration were 3 times greater. In two other communities, with high rates of dark respiration relative to Pmaxthe ratesof ‘light’ respiration were closer to rates of darkrespiration. In the Synechococcus clone, both gross and netoxygen production rates were inhibited at high light intensities.Rates of ‘light’ respiration were found to varyas a function of light intensity. The greatest rates of respirationwere measured in samples incubated at light intensities thatwere just saturating (100 µE m–2 s–1). Therates of 14C production were also measured as a function oflight intensity The photosynthetic quotients, based on 14C productionrates and gross oxygen production rates, average 1 9  相似文献
