How the iobc/oilb montpellier 1996 conference developed,and was organized

The first incentive to envisage a worldwide Conference on the implementation of biological control was formally accepted by the global International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC; French and Spanish: OILB) in July 1992 during its General Assembly held in Bei-jing (China; cf. IOBC/OILB Newsletter55, April 1992; 56, August 1992). As a first step, a Conference Executive Committee (as listed below) was established under the auspices of IOBC/OILB, which has been responsible for defining the concept, and delineating broad scientific guidelines to be followed in the preparation of the event.

TT2013 meeting report: the Transgenic Technology meeting visits Asia for the first time

The 11th Transgenic Technology meeting was held in Guangzhou, China on 25th–27th February 2013. Over 300 scientists and students from round the world gathered to hear the latest developments in the technologies underpinning the creation of transgenic and knockout animals and their application to biological sciences in areas such as the modeling human diseases and biotechnology. As well as informative presentations from leading researchers in the field, an excellent selection of short talks selected from abstracts and posters, attendees were also treated to an inspiring talk from Allan Bradley who was awarded the 9th International Society of Transgenic Technologies Prize for outstanding contributions to the field of transgenic technologies.

Animals, energy, and water in extreme environments: perspectives from Ithala 2004

Animals occupy an impressive range of environments, and many approach the limits of conditions that are compatible with life. Such environments are often characterized by low productivity, and survival depends on abilities to maintain levels of hydration sufficient for biochemical reactions and an adequate level of energy turnover. Specific adaptations for acquiring and conserving water affect the intake and utilization of energy that is available for growth and reproduction. Almost any benign, historically stable environment can become hostile if conditions change, and the severity of challenges to animals depends on temporal as well as spatial factors that are related to the intensity and duration of harsh conditions (e.g., drought). Animals have responded to such changes through avoidance, phenotypically plastic adjustments, and evolutionary changes in genomic structure. Here we present an overview of research findings presented at a session of the Third International Conference of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry. We hope such a synthesis will stimulate new directions in research that address biological responses to environmental change. In this context, we believe that challenging environments in Africa might provide increasingly useful sites for biological investigations relating to the application of comparative and evolutionary approaches toward a deeper understanding of physiological adaptation.

Bioinformatics and systems biology research update from the 15<Superscript>th</Superscript> International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB2016)

The International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB) has been publishing peer-reviewed conference papers in BMC Bioinformatics since 2006. Of the 44 articles accepted for publication in supplement issues of BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Genomics, BMC Medical Genomics and BMC Systems Biology, 24 articles with a bioinformatics or systems biology focus are reviewed in this editorial. InCoB2017 is scheduled to be held in Shenzen, China, September 20–22, 2017.     

First Aegean International Conference on Molecular Recognition

This meeting report describes some of the highlights of the First Biennial Aegean International Conference on Molecular Recognition that took place in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece, between 6 and 11 June 2010. The conference comprised four sessions devoted to: dynamic and combinatorial molecular recognition; B-cell epitope prediction, synthesis and vaccines; nanotechnology approaches to molecular recognition; and host-pathogen interactions. A total of 35 oral communications and 15 posters were presented. The second Aegean International Conference on Molecular Recognition is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2012.
