Abstract

In this study, data from the New Immigrant Survey and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey are combined to examine patterns of overweight and obesity among U.S.‐born and foreign‐born Hispanics. Results indicate that, after using height and weight measures adjusted for self‐reporting bias, foreign‐born Hispanic men and women have substantially lower likelihoods of being overweight and obese than the U.S.‐born. However, both likelihoods increase as years in the U.S. accumulate for the foreign‐born. Controls for smoking behavior, physical activity, and the degree of dietary change do not reduce the strength of the positive relationship between years in the U.S. and overweight/obesity.  相似文献

New acylated 5‐thio‐β‐d‐glucopyranosylimino‐disusbstituted 1,3,4‐thiadiazols 8, and 11 were prepared, via spontaneous rearrangements, by cycloaddition of the glycosyl isothiocyanate 2 with the reactive intermediates 1‐aza‐2‐azoniaallene hexachloroantimonates 4 and 6, respectively. Reaction of 2 with aminoacetone or chloroethylamine afforded the acylated 5‐thio‐β‐d‐glucopyranosyl‐4‐imidazoline‐2‐thione nucleoside 16 and glucopyranosylamino‐2‐thiazoline derivative 18, respectively. Deblocking of 8, 11, 17 and 19 furnished the free nucleoside analogues 9, 12, 18 and 20, respectively. Analogously, treatment of 2 with chloroethylamine in the 1:2 ratio afforded the thioureylendisaccharide 21. No in vitro antiviral activity against HIV‐1, HIV‐2, human cytomegallovirus (HMCV), has been found for the new synthesized compounds.  相似文献

Abstract

Using 1979–87 Hawaii vital record data on single live births, this study compares by nativity status of the mother the maternal characteristics and pregnancy outcomes of resident Filipino women. Among ethnic minorities in the United States, the pregnancy outcomes of U.S.‐born mothers have been reported to compare unfavorably to their foreign‐born counterparts. In this study, unequivocally preferential pregnancy outcome indicators were not observed for foreign‐born women. Contrary to expectations, a significant, but modest, increase in the risk of preterm delivery was found for infants of Philippines‐born mothers, along with a less favorable mean birth weight and gestational age. As a growing minority population in the United States, the atypical determinants and patterns of pregnancy outcome in this population warrants further investigation.  相似文献

The Mitsunobu reaction was applied to prepare, in one step, purine N 3,5′‐cyclonucleosides 10a–d. A subsequent ring opening in the ribose moiety of the resultant N 3,5′‐nucleosides by sodium periodate led to the corresponding N 3,5′‐cyclo‐2′,3′‐seconucleosides. These products consist of 5‐, 6‐, and 7‐membered tricyclic system which is the basic skeleton of TIBO derivatives, known antiviral agents.  相似文献

Abstract

The rhythmic change between an active phase and a resting phase of the plasmodial rhizopod Thalassomyxa australis sustained on the diatome Amphiprora, is not synchronized by a 12: 12 h light‐dark‐cycle. Likewise, 12: 12 h temperature cycles of 8°C difference such as 23°/15°C, 25°/17°C, 27°/19°C are not entraining this rhythm.  相似文献

We have used the solid‐phase MetPLA TE, an enzyme assay that is specific for heavy‐metal toxicity, to investigate metal toxicity of soils that have been amended with urban wastewater sludges or contaminated with dry deposition from metal‐plating industries. We have shown that soil toxicity, using MetPLA TE, ranged from 21 to 72.5% inhibition of enzyme activity. Evin soil, which displayed the highest toxicity, also had the highest concentrations of Pb and Zn. Metal uptake studies with ryegrass grown on Evin soil, showed Zn, Cd, and Pb accumulation in the plant that exceeds the standard levels reported for grasses

Solid‐phase MetPLA TE was also used as a tool to study the reduction of heavy‐metal toxicity following soil amendments to immobilize metals in soil and thus reduce their toxicity. It was found that the addition of 1% hydrated manganese oxide significantly reduced dissolved metals in soil, their accumulation by ryegrass, and soil toxicity as shown by MetPLA TE.  相似文献

Different arabinosides and ribosides, viz. Ara‐DDA or 9(1‐β‐d‐arabinofuranosyl) 1,3‐dideazaadenine (6), Ara‐NDDP or 9(1‐β‐d‐arabinofuranosyl) 4‐nitro‐1,3‐dideazapurine (7), Ara‐DKP or 1(1‐β‐d‐arabinofuranosyl) diketopiperazine (8), Ribo‐DDA or 9(1‐β‐d‐ribofuranosyl) 1,3‐dideazaadenine (9) and Ribo‐NDDP or 9(1‐β‐d‐ribofuranosyl) 4‐nitro‐1,3‐dideazapurine (10) have been synthesized as probable antiviral agents. The arabinosides have been synthesized using the catalyst TDA‐1 that causes stereospecific formation of β‐nucleosides while a one‐pot synthesis procedure was adopted for the synthesis of the ribonucleosides where β‐anomers were obtained in higher yields. All the five nucleoside analogs have been screened for antiviral property against HIV‐1 (IIIB), HSV‐1 and 2, parainfluenza‐3, reovirus‐1 and many others. It was observed that arabinosides had greater inhibitory action than ribosides. The compound 7 or Ara‐NDDP has shown maximum inhibition of HIV‐1 replication than the rest of the molecules with an IC50 of 79.4 µg/mL.  相似文献

Abstract

A comparison of intra‐ and inter‐ethnic divorce rates in Hawaii showed that inter‐ethnic marriages resulted in a higher proportion of divorces than did intra‐ethnic marriages when the marriage data used had to do with all marriages occurring in Hawaii. However, a sizeable portion of marriages in Hawaii are of nonresidents who, if they divorce, probably divorce elsewhere. Nonresident marriages are chiefly intra‐ethnic marriages of Caucasians. When examining the proportions of divorces to resident marriages, within‐group marriages are more at risk than inter‐ethnic marriages. As in prior research, persons who marry members of other racial/ethnic groups tend to marry persons from groups with income levels similar to their own. As in previous reports, some cross‐ethnic combinations appeared more at risk for divorce than did others. Group income appeared to be a predictor of risk. When considering only resident marriages as related to divorces, those marriages in which the bride was from a higher income group than the groom were at a significantly greater risk for divorce than marriage in which the bride came from an income group lower than that of the groom.  相似文献

Methyl 2,5‐anhydro‐3‐O‐(2‐methoxyethyl)‐2‐thio‐β‐d‐arabinofuranoside and methyl 2,5‐anhydro‐3‐O‐(2‐fluorobenzyl)‐2‐thio‐α‐d‐lyxofuranoside were transformed into the corresponding uridine, thymidine, cytidine and adenosine analogues, which exclusively exhibited the α‐configuration irrespective of the anomeric configuration of the donor. The structure, configuration, and conformation of the products was elucidated by X‐ray structure analyses. The nucleoside analogues were tested for antiviral activities.  相似文献

Some 4′‐C‐ethynyl‐2′‐deoxy purine nucleosides showed the most potent anti‐HIV activity among the series of 4′‐C‐substituted 2′‐deoxynucleosides whose 4′‐C‐substituents were methyl, ethyl, ethynyl and so on. Our hypothesis is that the smaller the substituent at the C‐4′ position they have, the more acceptable biological activity they show. Thus, 4′‐C‐cyano‐2′‐deoxy purine nucleosides, whose substituent is smaller than the ethynyl group, will have more potent antiviral activity. To prove our hypothesis, we planned to develop an efficient synthesis of 4′‐C‐cyano‐2′‐deoxy purine nucleosides (4′‐CNdNs) and 4′‐C‐ethynyl‐2′‐deoxy purine nucleosides (4′‐EdNs). Consequently, we succeeded in developing an efficient synthesis of six 2′‐deoxy purine nucleosides bearing either a cyano or an ethynyl group at the C‐4′ position of the sugar moiety from 2′‐deoxyadenosine and 2,6‐diaminopurine 2′‐deoxyriboside. Unfortunately, 4′‐C‐cyano derivatives showed lower activity against HIV‐1, and two 4′‐C‐ethynyl derivatives suggested high toxicity in vivo.  相似文献

Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is reduced intracellularly to Cr (V), Cr (IV) and Cr (III) by ascorbate (Asc), cysteine and glutathione (GSH). These metabolites induce a spectrum of genomic DNA damage resulting in the inhibition of DNA replication. Our previous studies have shown that treatment of DNA with Cr (III) or Cr (VI) plus Asc results in the formation of DNACrDNA crosslinks (CrDDC) and guaninespecific arrests of both prokaryotic and mammalian DNA polymerases. GSH not only acts as a reductant of Cr (VI) but also becomes crosslinked to DNA by Cr, thus, the focus of the present study was to examine the role of GSH in Crinduced DNA damage and polymerase arrests. Coincubation of Cr (III) with plasmid DNA in the presence of GSH led to the crosslinking of GSH to DNA. GSH cotreatment with Cr (III) also led to a decrease in the degree of Crinduced DNA interstrand crosslinks relative to Cr (III) alone, without affecting total Cr DNA binding. DNA polymerase arrests were observed following treatment of DNA with Cr (III) alone, but were markedly reduced when GSH was added to the reaction mixture. Preformed polymerasearresting lesions (CrDDC) were not removed by subsequent addition of GSH. Treatment of DNA with Cr (VI), in the presence of GSH, resulted in crosslinking of GSH to DNA, but failed to produce detectable DNA interstrand crosslinks or polymerase arrests. The inhibitory effect of GSH on Crinduced polymerase arrest was further confirmed in human genomic DNA using quantitative PCR (QPCR) analysis. Treatment of genomic DNA with Cr (III) resulted in a marked inhibition of the amplification of a 1.6 kb target fragment of the p53 gene by Taq polymerase. This was almost completely prevented by cotreatment with GSH and Cr (III). These results indicate that Crinduced DNA interstrand crosslinks, and not DNACrGSH crosslinks, are the principal lesions responsible for blocking DNA replication. Moreover, the formation of DNACrGSH crosslinks may actually preclude the formation of the polymerase arresting lesions.  相似文献

The wheat crop remains vulnerable to all three rust diseases (leaf rust, stem rust and yellow rust) caused by Puccinia spp. according to the prevalence of the pathogen in different wheat-growing areas worldwide. Stripe rust or yellow rust caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici is the most significant rust pathogen which prefers cool, moist areas and highlands. The pathogen is recognised as responsible for huge production losses in wheat. Genetic variation in pathogen makes its control difficult. Therefore, resistance against all the races of the pathogen known as durable or race-non-specific resistance is preferred. The present study was carried out to identify durable resistance against stripe rust in selected wheat cultivars from Pakistan through seedling testing, field evaluation at adult stage, morphological marker studies and marker-assisted selection. Results revealed that 4% of the cultivars were resistant at the seedling stage while the rest were susceptible or intermediate. To confirm their field resistance, the same cultivars were evaluated under field conditions at Cereal Crops Research Institute Pirsabak (located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, KP) a hot spot of stripe rust in Pakistan. Observations exhibited that at the adult stage 4% of the cultivars were resistant, 70% intermediate or moderately resistant while the others were highly susceptible. Leaf tip necrosis was observed in 30% of the cultivars. Wheat cultivars showing susceptibility at the seedling stage were highly to moderately resistant at adult stage showing durable resistance. For further validation, morphological markers were also observed in cultivars indicating the presence of Yr18/Lr34 gene. Eleven cultivars (C-518, Mexipak, Kohinoor-83, Faisalabad-83, Zardana-93, Shahkar-95, Moomal-2002, Wattan-94, Pasban-90, Kiran-95, and Haider-2000) were identified, having durable or race non-specific resistance against stripe rust. These cultivars can further be utilised in wheat breeding programmes for deploying durable resistance to attain long lasting control against stripe rust.  相似文献

During the Gulf Crisis, the State of Kuwait was subjected to hazards caused by the oil well fires. The discharged oil formed over 300 oil lakes, covering land areas in excess of 49 km2. In addition, deposits from aerial fallout covered massive areas of Kuwait's desert soil. It has been widely recognized that the heavily oil‐contaminated soil must be remediated in order to avoid total damage to the land, water ecosystems, and/or the eventual release of hazardous particulate compositions to the atmosphere. A large number of diverse technological options were being considered for the remediation of contaminated soil. Bioremediation techniques involving enhanced landfarming was selected and evaluated at pilot scale

The experiments were initiated in November 1992 at the Burgan oil field in which 16 landfarming plots of 120 m2 each were constructed. The study continued for 18 months, during which time petroleum hydrocarbon concentration, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), and heavy metals were monitored regularly. The result obtained showed that landfarming treatment resulted in more than 80% reduction of oil contamination within 15 months. The treatment also resulted in a substantial reduction of the PAHs concentrations.  相似文献

Due to a considerable increase of anthropogenic mercury emissions, the mercury load of many soils has risen significantly, for instance in northern Europe. Understanding the fate of mercury in soils is a prerequisite for assessing the effects of ecotoxicological concern. This paper presents a method for obtaining qualitative and quantitative information about mercury translocation in and evaporation from soil. Soil lysimeters were treated with 203Hg‐labeled HgCl2 and CH3HgCl and irrigated with artificial rain. It was demonstrated that the leaching of Hg can be detected by measuring the relative y‐activity throughout the soil profile by means of Na(TI)I detectors. Furthermore, the set‐up was designed to allow detection of Hg volatilization from soil by using traps of iodized charcoal, followed by a potassium peroxodisulfate solution and measuring the γ‐activity. The amount of radioactive Hg in soil leachate was measured by a Na(Tl)I well‐type detector after upconcentration. The determination of monomethyl 203Hg was been performed by extraction procedures that isolate the methyl mercury compounds. The amount of 203Hg retained in the soil profile and the real depth of leaching were determined by stratifying the soil profile at the end of the experiment and measuring the y‐activity. With control of all pathways of Hg, the experimental design allows performance of a mass balance analysis.  相似文献

A palynological study was carried out on four Italian Miocene‐Pliocene sections ranging in age from uppermost Tortonian to Zanclean located on the Adriatic side of the North‐Central Apennines. The study documents the Mediterranean isolation, the salinity crisis (s.s), the “lago‐mare”; event and the re‐establishment of open‐marine conditions in the Mediterranean at the beginning of the Pliocene. From a climatic point of view, a transition from subtropical/warm‐temperate conditions during the Messinian to warm‐temperate/temperate conditions during the Zanclean is recorded. The presence of a lower thermic level, with respect to the Messinian, the re‐establishment of open‐marine conditions and the uplift of the Apennines were major factors controlling paleoenvironmental variations during the Zanclean. The latter is also characterized by cyclic temperature oscillations. Correlations with coeval sections in the Mediterranean area confirm the existence of latitudinal climatic gradients within the studied area.  相似文献

Abstract

Prior to the U.S.‐Mexico Border Survey of Maternal and Child Health and Family Planning conducted by the Centers for Disease Control in 1979, little information was available about the extent to which Mexican‐Americans in the U.S., relative to Anglos, were using male and female sterilization for contraceptive reasons. This paper compares Mexican‐Americans and Anglos for (a) prevalence of contraceptive sterilization; (b) social and demographic characteristics of users of contraceptive sterlization; and (c) tuning during the reproductive life cycle when contraceptive sterilization occurs. For both Mexican‐Americans and Anglos, contraceptive sterilization (male and female) was the second most prevalent method used. Anglos were more likely to use male than female sterilization (22.4 per cent and 19.5 per cent), while Mexican‐Americans were much more likely to use female than male sterilization (23.2 per cent and 5.8 per cent). Having an unwanted last live birth and/or high parity were important factors related to the use of female sterilization for both Mexican‐Americans and Anglos.  相似文献

Oligoribonucleotides containing 4‐thiouridine were prepared using the Fpmp group for protection of the 2′‐OH. Two uridine derivatives with the 1,2,4‐triazolyl and the 2‐nitrophenyl groups at position 4 were used to obtain 4‐thiouridine by postsynthetic substitution with sodium hydrogen sulfide. Both uridine derivatives allow the preparation of the desired oligonucleotides in good yields.  相似文献

The use of plants and their rhizospheric microorganisms is a promising emerging technology for remediating contaminated soils. The degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in the rhizospheric and nonrhizospheric soil of three domestic plants, namely, alfalfa (Medicaga sativa) broad beans (Vicia faba) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne) was investigated. The experimental data from the studies of plantmicrobe‐soil interactions implicated the enhancement of TPH degradation by the rhizospheric microbial community. Although the three domestic plants exhibited normal growth in the presence of ~1.0% TPH, the degradation was more profound in the case of leguminous plants. The TPH degradation in the soil cultivated with broad beans and alfalfa was 36.6 and 35.8%, respectively, compared with 24% degradation in case of ryegrass. Such a high correlation between plant type and TPH degradation rates indicate that selection for enhanced rhizosphere degradation may be accomplished by selecting leguminous plants.  相似文献
