Plants have evolved some mechanisms to maximize the efficiency of phosphorus acquisition.Changes in root architecture are one such mechanism. When Fraxinus mandshurica Rupr. seedlings were grown under conditions of low phosphorus availability, the length of cells in the meristem zone of the lateral roots was longer, but the length of cells in the elongation and mature zones of the lateral roots was shorter, compared with seedlings grown under conditions of high phosphorus availability. The elongation rates of primary roots increased as phosphorus availability increased, but the elongation rates of the branched zones of the primary roots decreased. The number of lateral root primordia and the length of the lateral roots decreased as phosphorus availability increased. The topological index (altitude slope) decreased as phosphorus availability increased, suggesting that root architecture tended to be herringbone-like when seedlings were grown under conditions of low phosphate availability. Herringbone-like root systems exploit nutrients more efficiently, but they have higher construction costs than root systems with a branching pattern.  相似文献

Root system architecture depends on nutrient availability, which shapes primary and lateral root development in a nutrient-specific manner. To better understand how nutrient signals are integrated into root developmental programs, we investigated the morphological response of Arabidopsis thaliana roots to iron (Fe). Relative to a homogeneous supply, localized Fe supply in horizontally separated agar plates doubled lateral root length without having a differential effect on lateral root number. In the Fe uptake-defective mutant iron-regulated transporter1 (irt1), lateral root development was severely repressed, but a requirement for IRT1 could be circumvented by Fe application to shoots, indicating that symplastic Fe triggered the local elongation of lateral roots. The Fe-stimulated emergence of lateral root primordia and root cell elongation depended on the rootward auxin stream and was accompanied by a higher activity of the auxin reporter DR5-β-glucuronidase in lateral root apices. A crucial role of the auxin transporter AUXIN RESISTANT1 (AUX1) in Fe-triggered lateral root elongation was indicated by Fe-responsive AUX1 promoter activities in lateral root apices and by the failure of the aux1-T mutant to elongate lateral roots into Fe-enriched agar patches. We conclude that a local symplastic Fe gradient in lateral roots upregulates AUX1 to accumulate auxin in lateral root apices as a prerequisite for lateral root elongation.  相似文献

Background and AimsRoot proliferation is a response to a heterogeneous nutrient distribution. However, the growth of root hairs in response to heterogeneous nutrients and the relationship between root hairs and lateral roots remain unclear. This study aims to understand the effects of heterogeneous nutrients on root hair growth and the trade-off between root hairs and lateral roots in phosphorus (P) acquisition.MethodsNear-isogenic maize lines, the B73 wild type (WT) and the rth3 root hairless mutant, were grown in rhizoboxes with uniform or localized supply of 40 (low) or 140 (high) mg P kg−1 soil.ResultsBoth WT and rth3 had nearly two-fold greater shoot biomass and P content under local than uniform treatment at low P. Significant root proliferation was observed in both WT and rth3 in the nutrient patch, with the WT accompanied by an obvious increase (from 0.7 to 1.2 mm) in root hair length. The root response ratio of rth3 was greater than that of WT at low P, but could not completely compensate for the loss of root hairs. This suggests that plants enhanced P acquisition through complementarity between lateral roots and root hairs, and thus regulated nutrient foraging and shoot growth. The disappearance of WT and rth3 root response differences at high P indicated that the P application reduced the dependence of the plants on specific root traits to obtain nutrients.ConclusionsIn addition to root proliferation, the root response to a nutrient-rich patch was also accompanied by root hair elongation. The genotypes without root hairs increased their investment in lateral roots in a nutrient-rich patch to compensate for the absence of root hairs, suggesting that plants enhanced nutrient acquisition by regulating the trade-off of complementary root traits.  相似文献

Plant root development is strongly affected by nutrient availability. Despite the importance of structure and function of roots in nutrient acquisition, statistical modeling approaches to evaluate dynamic and temporal modulations of root system architecture in response to nutrient availability have remained as widely open and exploratory areas in root biology. In this study,we developed a statistical modeling approach to investigate modulations of root system architecture in response to nitrogen availability. Mathematical models were designed for quantitative assessment of root growth and root branching phenotypes and their dynamic relationships based on hierarchical con figuration of primary and lateral roots formulating the fishbone-shaped root system architecture in Arabidopsis thaliana. Time-series datasets reporting dynamic changes in root developmental traits on different nitrate or ammonium concentrations were generated for statistical analyses. Regression analyses unraveled key parameters associated with:(i) inhibition of primary root growth under nitrogen limitation or on ammonium;(ii) rapid progression of lateral root emergence in response to ammonium; and(iii) inhibition of lateral root elongation in the presence of excess nitrate or ammonium. This study provides a statistical framework for interpreting dynamic modulation of root system architecture, supported by metaanalysis of datasets displaying morphological responses of roots to diverse nitrogen supplies.  相似文献

The hormone auxin is known to inhibit root elongation and to promote initiation of lateral roots. Here we report complex effects of auxin on lateral root initiation in roots showing reduced cell elongation after auxin treatment. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the promotion of lateral root initiation by indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was reduced as the IAA concentration was increased in the nanomolar range, and IAA became inhibitory at 25 nM. Detection of this unexpected inhibitory effect required evaluation of root portions that had newly formed during treatment, separately from root portions that existed prior to treatment. Lateral root initiation was also reduced in the iaaM-OX Arabidopsis line, which has an endogenously increased IAA level. The ethylene signaling mutants ein2-5 and etr1-3, the auxin transport mutants aux1-7 and eir1/pin2, and the auxin perception/response mutant tir1-1 were resistant to the inhibitory effect of IAA on lateral root initiation, consistent with a requirement for intact ethylene signaling, auxin transport and auxin perception/response for this effect. The pericycle cell length was less dramatically reduced than cortical cell length, suggesting that a reduction in the pericycle cell number relative to the cortex could occur with the increase of the IAA level. Expression of the DR5:GUS auxin reporter was also less effectively induced, and the AXR3 auxin repressor protein was less effectively eliminated in such root portions, suggesting that decreased auxin responsiveness may accompany the inhibition. Our study highlights a connection between auxin-regulated inhibition of parent root elongation and a decrease in lateral root initiation. This may be required to regulate the spacing of lateral roots and optimize root architecture to environmental demands.  相似文献

Although lateral roots may contribute significantly towards growth and nourishment of plants, the mechanics of their elongation behaviour in strong soils is not well known. The aim of this study is to report maximum axial growth pressures (p) and maximum elongation rates (E) of the lateral roots of an annual herbaceous plant (pea) and a woody perennial (eucalypt). As such measurements have not been reported previously, measurements of P and E for lateral roots were compared with the primary roots of pea for which reports are widespread. Values of P were estimated from the measured maximum values of axial force and root diameter on single, intact roots of seedlings in the laboratory. Additional measurements of both P and E were made for the lateral roots of pea when the growth of the remaining root axes was stopped (with removal of tips) to determine the overall effects of root-growth-inhibition on P and E of single roots.Values of P and E for lateral roots of pea were significantly greater than those for the lateral roots of eucalypt. Although root diameter for the primary roots of pea were similar to those for the lateral roots of eucalypt, the former exerted nearly twice as much pressure as the latter. The lateral roots of pea elongated significantly slower than the primary roots; however, P of lateral roots was significantly lower than the primary roots when elongation of all other roots was inhibited during the measurements. Production and/or development of lateral roots increased when elongation of the remaining roots (both primary and lateral roots) of pea seedlings was restricted due to the removal of root tips and exposure of one of the lateral roots to high strength. In general, maximum axial force exerted by primary and lateral roots was similar for roots of <1 mm diameter. However, primary roots exerted greater maximum axial force than the lateral roots when root diameter was >1 mm. As axial pressure of lateral roots was independent of root diameter, thickening of root tips is less likely to assist penetration of lateral roots in strong soils.  相似文献

Arabidopsis plants responding to phosphorus (P) deficiency increase lateral root formation and reduce primary root elongation. In addition the number and length of root hairs increases in response to P deficiency. Here we studied the patterns of radical oxygen species (ROS) in the roots of Arabidopsis seedlings cultured on media supplemented with high or low P concentration. We found that P availability affected ROS distribution in the apical part of roots. If plants were grown on high P medium, ROS were located in the root elongation zone and quiescent centre. At low P ROS were absent in the elongation zone, however, their synthesis was detected in the primary root meristem. The proximal part of roots was characterized by ROS production in the lateral root primordia and in elongation zones of young lateral roots irrespective of P concentration in the medium. On the other hand, plants grown at high or low P differed in the pattern of ROS distribution in older lateral roots. At high P, the elongation zone was the primary site of ROS production. At low P, ROS were not detected in the elongation zone. However, they were present in the proximal part of the lateral root meristem. These results suggest that P deficiency affects ROS distribution in distal parts of Arabidopsis roots. Under P-sufficiency ROS maximum was observed in the elongation zone, under low P, ROS were not synthesized in this segment of the root, however, they were detected in the apical root meristem.  相似文献

The developmental response of the Arabidopsis root system to low phosphorus (P) availability involves the reduction in primary root elongation accompanied by the formation of numerous lateral roots. We studied the roles of selected redox metabolites, namely, radical oxygen species (ROS) and ascorbic acid (ASC) in the regulation of root system architecture by different P availability. Rapidly growing roots of plants grown on P-sufficient medium synthesize ROS in root elongation zone and quiescent centre. We have demonstrated that the arrest of root elongation at low P medium coincides with the disappearance of ROS from the elongation zone. P-starvation resulted in a decrease in ascorbic acid level in roots. This correlated with a decrease in cell division activity. On the other hand, feeding P-deficient plants with ASC, stimulated mitotic activity in the primary root meristem and partly reversed the inhibition of root growth imposed by low P conditions. In this paper, we discuss the idea of the involvement of redox agents in the regulation of root system architecture under low P availability.Key words: ascorbic acid, phosphate deficiency, primary root, radical oxygen species, root growth, root system architecture  相似文献

The auxin content in roots of hydroponically grown wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) plants was affected by imbalanced distribution of nutrients when the root medium fed to plants from isolated compartments. One day after the transfer of seedlings on the nutrient medium with uneven ion distribution, the IAA content in roots contacting concentrated nutrient solution became significantly higher than in roots bathed with a dilute solution. The IAA content reached the peak on the second day and remained steadily high later on. The lateral root primordia developed in these roots were more numerous; the largest difference in this parameter was observed in 1–2 days after the increase in root content of auxin. One day later, numerous lateral roots appeared on the parent roots contacting the concentrated nutrient solution. Thus, the increase in concentration of the nutrient solution bathing a part of root system raised the IAA content in the affected roots prior to the enhanced root branching. This hormonal response of plants might play an important role in changes of root growth rate and root branching, thereby improving plant nutrition.  相似文献

Plant root systems can respond to nutrient availability and distribution by changing the three-dimensional deployment of their roots: their root system architecture (RSA). We have compared RSA in homogeneous and heterogeneous nitrate and phosphate supply in Arabidopsis. Changes in nitrate and phosphate availability were found to have contrasting effects on primary root length and lateral root density, but similar effects on lateral root length. Relative to shoot dry weight (DW), primary root length decreased with increasing nitrate availability, while it increased with increasing phosphate supply. Lateral root density remained constant across a range of nitrate supplies, but decreased with increasing phosphate supply. In contrast, lateral root elongation was suppressed both by high nitrate and high phosphate supplies. Local supplies of high nitrate or phosphate in a patch also had different effects. Primary root growth was not affected by a high nitrate patch, but growth through a high phosphate patch reduced primary root growth after the root left the patch. A high nitrate patch induced an increase in lateral root density in the patch, whereas lateral root density was unaffected by a high phosphate patch. However, both phosphate- and nitrate-rich patches induced lateral root elongation in the patch and suppressed it outside the patch. This co-ordinated response of lateral roots also occurs in soil-grown plants exposed to a nutrient-rich patch. The auxin-resistant mutants axrl, axr4 and aux1 all showed the wild-type lateral root elongation responses to a nitrate-rich patch, suggesting that auxin is not required for this response.  相似文献

Possible Involvement of Cytokinin in Nitrate-mediated Root Growth in Maize   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Response of root system architecture to nutrient availability in soils is an essential way for plants to adapt to soil environments. Nitrate can affect root development either as a result of changes in the external concentration, or through changes in the internal nutrient status of the plant. Nevertheless, less is known about the physiological mechanisms. In the present study, two maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines (478 and Wu312) were used to study a possible role of cytokinin in nitrate-mediated root growth in nutrient solutions. Root elongation of 478 was more sensitive to high nitrate supply than that of Wu312. Medium high nitrate (5 mM) inhibited root elongation in 478, while, root elongation in Wu312 was only inhibited at high NO 3 supply (20 mM). Under high nitrate supply, the root elongation zone in 478 became swollen and the site of lateral root elongation was close towards the root tip. Both of the phenomena are typical of root growth induced by exogenous cytokinin treatments. Correspondingly, zeatin and zeatin nucleotide (Z + ZR) concentrations were increased at higher nitrate supply in 478, whereas they were constant in Wu312. Furthermore, exogenous cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) completely reversed the stimulatory effect of low nitrate on root elongation. Therefore, it is supposed that the inhibitory effect of high concentration of nitrate on root elongation is, at least in part, mediated by increased cytokinin level in roots. High nitrate supply may have negative influences on root apex activity by affecting cytokinin metabolism so that root apical dominance is weakened and, therefore, root elongation is suppressed and lateral roots grow closer to the root apex. Nitrate suppressed lateral root elongation in Wu312 at concentration higher than 5 mM. In 478, however, this phenomenon was not significant even at 20 mM nitrate. Although exogenous 6-BA (20 nM) could suppress lateral root elongation as well, the inhibitory effect of high NO 3 concentration of nitrate on lateral root growth cannot be explained by changes in endogenous cytokinin alone.  相似文献

Information on the response of root growth and morphology to soil strength is useful for testing suitability of existing and new tillage methods and/or for selecting plants suitable for a specific site with or without tillage. Although there is extensive published information on the root growth-soil strength relationships for annual agricultural plants, such information is scarce for woody, perennial tree species. The purpose of this study is to examine growth and morphology of the root systems of 17-day-old eucalypt seedlings with respect to variation in soil strength. Soil strength in this study was varied by compaction of a well-aggregated clay soil to bulk densities of 0.7–1.0 Mg m-3 whilst maintaining adequate water availability and aeration for plant growth. Lengths and tip-diameters of primary and lateral roots were measured on the excavated root systems of seedlings. With increase in bulk density and also soil strength (expressed as penetrometer resistance), total length of primary and lateral roots decreased. There were 71 and 31% reduction in the lengths of primary and lateral roots respectively with an increase in penetrometer resistance from 0.4 to 4.2 MPa. This indicated primary roots to be more sensitive to high soil strength than the lateral roots. Average length of lateral roots and diameters of both primary and lateral root tips increased with an increase in soil strength as well. There was greater abundance of lateral roots (no. of lateral roots per unit length of primary root) and root hairs with increased soil strength. The observed root behaviour to variable soil strength is discussed in the context of compensatory growth of roots and overall growth of plants.

Root development is strongly affected by the plant's nutritional status and the external availability of nutrients. Employing split-root systems, we show here that local ammonium supply to Arabidopsis thaliana plants increases lateral root initiation and higher-order lateral root branching, whereas the elongation of lateral roots is stimulated mainly by nitrate. Ammonium-stimulated lateral root number or density decreased after ammonium or Gln supply to a separate root fraction and did not correlate with cumulative uptake of (15)N-labeled ammonium, suggesting that lateral root branching was not purely due to a nutritional effect but most likely is a response to a sensing event. Ammonium-induced lateral root branching was almost absent in a quadruple AMMONIUM TRANSPORTER (qko, the amt1;1 amt1;2 amt1;3 amt2;1 mutant) insertion line and significantly lower in the amt1;3-1 mutant than in the wild type. Reconstitution of AMT1;3 expression in the amt1;3-1 or in the qko background restored higher-order lateral root development. By contrast, AMT1;1, which shares similar transport properties with AMT1;3, did not confer significant higher-order lateral root proliferation. These results show that ammonium is complementary to nitrate in shaping lateral root development and that stimulation of lateral root branching by ammonium occurs in an AMT1;3-dependent manner.  相似文献

Gullies formed in the Velhas River basin in Brazil have been filled with urban construction waste for physical stabilisation purposes. Aimed at rehabilitating gullies, we selected woody species from the Brazilian Cerrado that can grow on rocky substrates under greenhouse conditions. An assessment was made regarding plant growth in both rocky and natural soil substrates by analysing the height, diameter, fresh and dry weights of shoots and roots, plant water content, root occupation and architecture. Principal component analysis and Chi-squared tests segregated rock-tolerant species based on the specific influence on root dry and fresh weights. Fast-growing species reduced the emergence of their lateral roots under rocks, compromising their growth in height and biomass production. In contrast, slow-growing woody species were particularly suitable for gully rehabilitation because these species exhibited a genetic pattern of low lateral root emergence that prevented damage to their roots. Most slow-growing species demonstrated a similar growth pattern in both substrates, and some of them, such as Copaifera langsdorffii, achieved better growth in height and biomass production on rocks than on soil, a finding attributed to the root plastic response involving primary root elongation and lateral root emergence. Therefore, slow-growing species are recommended for gully rehabilitation procedures.

When plants develop in strong soils, growth of the root system is generally depressed. However, branching and elongation of branches are often less affected than growth of the main axes, whenever the whole root system encounters even-impeded conditions. On the basis of a model simulating root growth and architecture as related to assimilate availability, we propose a simple hypothesis to explain such behaviour. In the model, growth of each root depends on its own elongation potential, which is estimated by its apical diameter. The potential elongation rate–apical diameter relationship is the same for all the roots of the system and is described by a monomolecular function. Our hypothesis is that the effect of soil strength can be simulated by introducing an impedance factor in the definition of root maximum potential elongation rate, common to the whole root system. When such impedance factor is applied, it affects more the potential of larger roots (main axes) than that of thinner roots (secondary and tertiary branches). Simulations provided in high impedance conditions led to root systems characterised by short taproots, whereas growth of secondary roots was unaffected and growth of tertiary roots was enhanced. Actual branching density was also higher, although branching rules have been unchanged. Such simulated systems where similar to that observed in strong soils. Friction laws or pore size can be involved in the larger reduction of the potential growth of main axes. Moreover, when growth of main axes is restricted, assimilate availability becomes higher for branches and that could explain that their growth could be increased in a homogeneous strong soil. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
