The hypothesis was investigated that variability in the severity of limbic seizure-induced hypothermia in rats was affected by ambient geomagnetic activity. Data were obtained in support of this hypothesis. The depth of the hypothermia was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced if the ambient geomagnetic activity exceeded 35 nT to 40 nT. Mortality during the subsequent 5 days was increased when the geomagnetic activity was > 20 nT. The magnitude of the effect was comparable to the difference between exposure to light or to darkness during the 20 h after the induction of limbic seizures.  相似文献

Abrupt, intense increases in global geomagnetic activity during the local night may precipitate a significant proportion of sudden unexpected (or unexplained) deaths (SUD) in epileptics. Over a 2-year period SUD in healthy chronic epileptic rats occurred when the average daily geomagnetic activity exceeded 50 nT (nanoTesla) and suddenly began during local night. Other experiments demonstrated that epileptic rats displayed more spontaneous seizures per night if there had been sudden increases in geomagnetic activity. Analyses of previously published data indicated that the number of SUDs/month in a population of human epileptics was positively associated with the number of days/month when the average geomagnetic activity exceeded 50 nT. The results support the hypothesis that suppression of the nocturnal concentrations of the endogenous anticonvulsant melatonin by sudden increases in geomagnetic activity may encourage fatal cardiac arrhythmias by uncoupling the insular/amygdaloid-paraventricular hypothalamic-solitary nucleus pathways.  相似文献

A wide variety of behaviors in several species has been statistically associated with the natural variations in geomagnetism. To examine whether changes in geomagnetic activity are associated with pain thresholds, adult mice were exposed to a hotplate paradigm once weekly for 52 weeks during the dark cycle. Planetary A index values from the previous 6 days of a given hotplate session were correlated with the mean response latency for subjects to the thermal stimulus. We found that hotplate latency was significantly (P < 0.05) and inversely correlated (rho = -0.25) with the daily geomagnetic intensity 3 days prior to testing. Therefore, if the geomagnetic activity was greater 3 days before a given hotplate trial, subjects tended to exhibit shorter response latencies, suggesting lower pain thresholds or less analgesia. These results are supported by related experimental findings and suggest that natural variations in geomagnetic intensity may influence nociceptive behaviors in mice.  相似文献

It has been suggested that some animals are much more capable of perceiving certain kinds of geophysical stimuli which may precede earthquakes than humans, but the anecdotal phenomena or stories about unusual animal behaviors prior to an earthquake should be interpreted with objective data. During the Wenchuan magnitude 8.0 earthquake that happened in Wenchuan county (31.0° north latitude, 103.4° east longitude) of Sichuan province, China, on May 12, 2008, eight mice were monitored for locomotor activity and circadian rhythm in constant darkness with temperature 22–24 °C and humidity 55–65% for 38 days. The ongoing monitoring of locomotor activity of mice in our laboratory made it possible to design a posteriori study investigating whether the earthquake was associated with any change in animal behavior. Based on analyzing the recorded data with single cosinor, we found that the locomotor activity dramatically decreased in six of these eight mice on day 3 before the earthquake, and the circadian rhythm of their locomotor activity was no longer detected. The behavioral change lasted for 6 days before the locomotor activity returned to its original state. Analyses of concurrent geomagnetic data showed a higher total intensity during the span when the circadian rhythm in locomotor activity weakened. These results indicated that the behaviors, including circadian rhythm and activity, in these mice indeed changed prior to the earthquake, and the behavioral change might be associated with a change of geomagnetic intensity. Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) use a polygynous mating system whereby males engage in multiple courtship behaviors, including vocalizations (gobbling) to attract females and compete with other males for breeding opportunities. Males must balance the risk of courtship behaviors with the reproductive potential of each courtship behavior. Male turkeys are primarily hunted during the reproductive period, so the associated risk of courtship behaviors is increased. Many state agencies attempt to set hunting season frameworks that maximize hunter satisfaction by allowing hunting when gobbling activity is greatest and most females are theoretically incubating nests, but the relationship between gobbling activity and nesting phenology is unclear. We used autonomous recording units and global positioning system transmitters to monitor gobbling activity by male turkeys and reproductive behaviors of female turkeys in the Piedmont region of Georgia, USA. We used 13,177 gobbles, behavioral data from 82 females during the reproductive season, and daily estimates of harvest of males by hunters to examine relationships between daily gobbling activity, cumulative removal of males, and reproductive behaviors (laying, incubating) of females during 2017–2018. We observed a weak negative relationship between daily gobbling activity and gobbling activity the following day. As the reproductive season progressed, gobbling activity decreased. As the proportion of females engaged in laying or incubating behaviors increased, expected daily gobbling activity increased. Conversely, we observed that hunting and removal of males had a negative effect on daily gobbling activity, and this effect was disproportionately greater than the positive effect of female reproductive behaviors. Our findings suggest that hunting and removal of males are important determinants of gobbling activity, and that corresponding reductions in gobbling activity may have mediating effects on the mating system of wild turkeys. © 2019 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

A number of studies have established the effects of solar-geomagnetic activity on the human cardio-vascular system. It is plausible that the heliophysical conditions existing during and after hospital admission may affect survival in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). We analyzed data from 1,413 ACS patients who were admitted to the Hospital of Kaunas University of Medicine, Lithuania, and who survived for more than 4 days. We evaluated the associations between active-stormy geomagnetic activity (GMA), solar proton events (SPE), and solar flares (SF) that occurred 0–3 days before and after admission, and 2-year survival, based on Cox’s proportional-hazards model, controlling for clinical data. After adjustment for clinical variables, active-stormy GMA on the 2nd day after admission was associated with an increased (by 1.58 times) hazard ratio (HR) of cardiovascular death (HR?=?1.58, 95 % CI 1.07–2.32). For women, geomagnetic storm (GS) 2 days after SPE occurred 1 day after admission increased the HR by 3.91 times (HR?=?3.91, 95 % CI 1.31–11.7); active-stormy GMA during the 2nd–3rd day after admission increased the HR by over 2.5 times (HR?=?2.66, 95 % CI 1.40–5.03). In patients aged over 70 years, GS occurring 1 day before or 2 days after admission, increased the HR by 2.5 times, compared to quiet days; GS in conjunction with SF on the previous day, nearly tripled the HR (HR?=?3.08, 95 % CI 1.32–7.20). These findings suggest that the heliophysical conditions before or after the admission affect the hazard ratio of lethal outcome; adjusting for clinical variables, these effects were stronger for women and older patients.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of lifelong exposure to reversed geomagnetic and zero geomagnetic fields (the latter means absence of geomagnetic field) on the life history of Daphnia carinata King from Australia and Daphnia magna Straus from Europe. Considerable deviation in the geomagnetic field from the usual strength, leads to a decrease in daphnia size and life span. Reduced brood sizes and increased body length of neonates are observed in D. magna exposed to unusual magnetic background. The most apparent effects are induced by zero geomagnetic field in both species of Daphnia. A delay in the first reproduction in zero geomagnetic field is observed only in D. magna. No adaptive maternal effects to reversed geomagnetic field are found in a line of D. magna maintained in these magnetic conditions for eight generations. Integrally, the responses of D. magna to unusual geomagnetic conditions are more extensive than that in D. carinata. We suggest that the mechanism of the effects of geomagnetic field reversal on Daphnia may be related to differences in the pattern of distribution of the particles that have a magnetic moment, or to moving charged organic molecules owing to a change in combined outcome and orientation of the geomagnetic field and Earth's gravitational field. The possibility of modulation of self-oscillating processes with changes in geomagnetic field is also discussed.  相似文献

We attempted to define the critical time period during early postnatal life when GH and T4 are essential for myelination. We administered bGH and T4 toSnell dwarf mice during the first and second 20 days after birth. Positive results were obtained only when hormones were given during the first 20 days of postnatal life. We observed a distinct increase in brain weight, DNA content, CNPase activity and a remarkably increased level of spontaneous locomotion activity with a diurnal periodicity. Morphological observations of brain sections stained for myelin basic protein (MBP) correlated the biochemical findings. The later administration of hormones was ineffective. Our interpretation is that the administration of exogenous hormones led to increased myelinogenesis through their stimulatory effects on glial proliferation, as evidenced by the increase in cerebral DNA content.  相似文献

The marine nudibranch mollusc Tritonia diotnedea orients to the geomagnetic field in the laboratory, and has identifiable brain cells (Pd5, 6) which respond electrically when the ambient magnetic field is rotated artificially. Field studies reported here seek to determine if and why Tritonia diomedea uses geomagnetic cues to orient in the field. Animals were collected in their natural habitat using SCUBA, and placed on lines with magnetic headings parallel to the shore, at different locations with respect to their site of origin. Observations made at two or more tidal cycles later indicate that most animals move from the line in a direction corresponding to the original shoreward direction, regardless of the actual shoreward direction at the site of release, suggesting guidance by geomagnetic cues. Tritonia diomedea are close to neutrally buoyant, and subject to transport over great distances when dislodged by tidal currents or during escape swimming behavior. Since the natural distribution of food and mates is along the shoreline, shoreward orientation using geomagnetic cues, particularly when other cues are weak or ambiguous, may have adaptive value.  相似文献

An individual analysis of long-term monitoring of microcirculation parameters of nine healthy volunteers showed that an increase in the geomagnetic activity led to an increase in tissue perfusion, variability of blood flow and growth of the amplitude of neurogenic and myogenic oscillations in four volunteers. It was found that the degree of microcirculation sensitivity to the level of geomagnetic activity varies with time and is proportional to its average level in the period of measurement. A comparison of frequency ranges of oscillations of blood flow and variations of the geomagnetic activity shows that neurogenic and myogenic oscillations showing the highest sensitivity to the geomagnetic activity have the same frequency as geomagnetic Pc3 pulsations. The pulsations of this frequency range are excited mainly during geomagnetic disturbances, which may explain the correlation between the microcirculation parameters and the K p-index. The relation of the amplitude-frequency characteristics of Pc3-pulsations can explain the results obtained using Lednev’s model which treats the spins of hydrogen nuclei as a primary target of action for extremely weak alternating magnetic fields.  相似文献

Recently, we have shown that the contents of total nucleated cells (TNCs) and CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (CD34+ HSPCs) as well as the cord blood volume (CBV) in umbilical cord blood (UCB) show a circadecadal (~10 years) rhythm of oscillation. This observation was based on an analysis of 17,936 cord blood donations collected during 1999–2011. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether this circadecadal rhythm of oscillation in TNCs, CD34+ HSPCs and CBV is related to geomagnetic activity. For the analysis, the yearly averages of TNCs, CD34+ HSPCs and CBV in UCB were correlated with geomagnetic activity (Dcx index). Our analysis revealed that (i) all three UCB parameters were statistically significantly correlated with the level of geomagnetic activity, (ii) CBV showed a linear correlation with the Dcx index (r = 0.5290), (iii) the number of TNCs and CD34+ HSPCs were quadratic inversely correlated with the Dcx index (r = ?0.5343 and r = ?0.7749, respectively). Furthermore, (iv) CBV and the number of TNCs were not statistically significantly correlated with the number of either modest or intense geomagnetic storms per year, but (v) the number of CD34+ HSPCs was statistically significantly correlated with the number of modest (r = 0.9253) as well as intense (r = 0.8683) geomagnetic storms per year. In conclusion, our study suggests that UCB parameters correlate with the state of the geomagnetic field (GMF) modulated by solar activity. Possible biophysical mechanisms underlying this observation, as well as the outcome of these findings, are discussed.  相似文献

Although white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) are common in captivity, few behavioral studies have been conducted and there is seemingly no research for immersive exhibits where potential for visitor effects is high. Moreover, little information exists on possible effects of weather and temperature on rhino outside their native range. Here we analyze 14,501 observations of rhino in a drive-through enclosure. Data were collected by researchers (n = 12,160 datapoints) and keepers (n = 2341 datapoints) over a 4-month period. We aimed to: (1) quantify behavior using detailed researcher-collected data and contemporaneous but ad hoc keeper-collected data; (2) compare datasets statistically; (3) establish effects of visitors, temperature, and weather on behavior; and (4) assess the influence of visitors on similarity of researcher/keeper datasets. Activity budgets were similar to the wild and the single previous study from a traditional (nondrive-through) enclosure. There was some discrepancy in activity budgets between researcher and keeper data due to significant differences in recorded frequency of two rare behaviors (horn rub; social interaction) and two behaviors that could be easily confused (grazing vs. standing with head-down): recording of other behaviors matched well. Weather and temperature affected behavior, with rhino becoming more sedentary (−locomotion, grazing; +resting, standing, and sedentary eating of hay) on hot/sunny days compared to cool/wet days. The number of visitor vehicles had a fairly negligible effect but resting was lower on busy days, possibly as vigilance increased. The match between researcher/keeper datasets was lowest when visitor numbers were high, suggesting visitors might affect keeper ability to accurately record behavior.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that sudden unexplained death (SUD) in some epileptic patients is related to geomagnetic activity we exposed rats in which limbic epilepsy had been induced to experimentally produced magnetic fields designed to simulate sudden storm commencements (SSCs). Prior studies with rats had shown that sudden death in groups of rats in which epilepsy had been induced months earlier was associated with the occurrence of SSCs and increased geomagnetic activity during the previous night. Schnabel et al. [(2000) Neurology 54:903–908) found no relationship between SUD in human patients and geomagnetic activity. A total of 96 rats were exposed to either 500, 50, 10–40 nT or sham (less than 10 nT) magnetic fields for 6 min every hour between midnight and 0800 hours (local time) for three successive nights. The shape of the complex, amplitude-modulated magnetic fields simulated the shape and structure of an average SSC. The rats were then seized with lithium and pilocarpine and the mortality was monitored. Whereas 10% of the rats that had been exposed to the sham field died within 24 h, 60% of the rats that had been exposed to the experimental magnetic fields simulating natural geomagnetic activity died (P<.001) during this period. These results suggest that correlational analyses between SUD in epileptic patients and increased geomagnetic activity can be simulated experimentally in epileptic rats and that potential mechanisms might be testable directly.  相似文献

Predators exert considerable top‐down pressure on ecosystems by directly consuming prey or indirectly influencing their foraging behaviors and habitat use. Prey is, therefore, forced to balance predation risk with resource reward. A growing list of anthropogenic stressors such as rising temperatures and ocean acidification has been shown to influence prey risk behaviors and subsequently alter important ecosystem processes. Yet, limited attention has been paid to the effects of chronic pharmaceutical exposure on risk behavior or as an ecological stressor, despite widespread detection and persistence of these contaminants in aquatic environments. In the laboratory, we simulated estuarine conditions of the shore crab, Hemigrapsus oregonensis, and investigated whether chronic exposure (60 days) to field‐detected concentrations (0, 3, and 30 ng/L) of the antidepressant fluoxetine affected diurnal and nocturnal risk behaviors in the presence of a predator, Cancer productus. We found that exposure to fluoxetine influenced both diurnal and nocturnal prey risk behaviors by increasing foraging and locomotor activity in the presence of predators, particularly during the day when these crabs normally stay hidden. Crabs exposed to fluoxetine were also more aggressive, with a higher frequency of agonistic interactions and increased mortality due to conflicts with conspecifics. These results suggest that exposure to field‐detected concentrations of fluoxetine may alter the trade‐off between resource acquisition and predation risk among crabs in estuaries. This fills an important data gap, highlighting how intra‐ and interspecific behaviors are altered by exposure to field concentrations of pharmaceuticals; such data more explicitly identify potential ecological impacts of emerging contaminants on aquatic ecosystems and can aid water quality management.  相似文献

Vigna unguiculata (cowpea) is a legume adapted to high temperatures and is sensitive to low temperatures. Temperature is one of the limiting factors of growth and yield for many crops but its effect on cowpea metabolism is not known. We investigated the effect of chilling on activity of vacuolar proton pumps (V-ATPase and V-PPase) and their protein content in tonoplast vesicles of cowpea hypocotyls. Seedlings grown for 7 days at 10 or 4°C were used for experiments. Chilling treatment at 10 or 4°C markedly suppressed growth of cowpea seedlings. Following chilling at 10 and 4°C, activity of both proton pumps and the relative amount of V-PPase and subunit A of V-ATPase were significantly increased. Both substrate hydrolysis and H+ transport activities of V-PPase remained at relatively high levels during chilling treatment. For V-ATPase, treatment at 10°C for 6 days increased the ATP hydrolysis activity. However, the H+ transport activity of the enzyme was increased when treated for 4 days but was markedly decreased when treated for 6 days. Our results provide evidence for different regulation for these vacuolar proton pumps, indicating that V-PPase is the more stable proton pump throughout chilling stress.  相似文献

The geomagnetic field is typically about 50 μT (range 20-90 μT). Geomagnetic activity generally decreases by about 4% for the seven days leading up to a full moon, and increases by about 4% after the full moon, lasting for seven days. Animals can clearly detect the changes in magnetic field intensity that occur at full moon, as it has been shown that variations of just a few tens of nT are adequate to form a useful magnetic ‘map’. We think that moonlight increases the sensitivity of animals' magnetoreception because the radical pair model predicts that magnetoreception is light dependent. In fact, there have been some reports of changes in the sensitivity of magnetoreception with lunar phase. We propose a hypothesis that animals respond to the full moon because of changes in geomagnetic fields, and that the sensitivity of animals' magnetoreception increases at this time.  相似文献

Summary a method of extracting pyridoxal oxidase (PO) activity from D. melanogaster adults is described. in crude extracts, this method allows the activity to remain stable for an extended period of time so that subsequent work on the enzyme can be carried out. The extraction procedure, the constituents of the buffer, and the assay conditions are given. Under these conditions, there is an increase, in specific activity of PO during the first 4 to 8 h following extraction when the extract is held at 4° C. Optimum pH, substrate concentration, and ionic strength are given. In all of these cases the maximum activity points are not chosen since at those values, the lability of the activity is increased. Enzyme activity is also increased by short periods at 55°C. The basis for the increased activity, either upon heating or upon standing at 4°C, is not understood. These and other results are discussed considering the possibility that the structural loci for pyridoxal oxidase and aldehyde oxidase might have arisen as a duplication from an ancestral gene.  相似文献

—The distribution, localization and changes in intensity of γ-aminobutyrate transaminase (4-aminobutyrate: 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase, EC 2.6.1.19) in rat brain have been studied during the first 20 days of postnatal life by a histochemical technique. Enzyme activity at birth was seen only in Purkinje cells of the cerebellar cortex where it increased markedly during the first 20 days. A rapid increase in enzyme activity was seen in regions of the hind-brain after 3 days but a slower increase was apparent in areas of the fore- and mid-brain. The results indicated that by 10 days post-partum nerve cell GABA-T activity had developed in the majority of brain areas studied, while glial cell GABA-T activity developed between 10 and 15 days post-partum. Evidence is presented which indicates that there is a discontinuous function of GABA-T in the developing brain.  相似文献

1. Generalized convulsive seizures can be elicited by a single unilateral microinjection of the cholinergic muscarinic agonist, carbachol, into the specific sites of the thalamus including ventral posterolateral and the reticular thalamic nuclei. The implication of the thalamic specific and reticular neurons is reviewed and discussed.2. On the basis of the c-fos regional expression and well-known efferent and afferent pathways linking these regions, a neuronal network relating the limbic, thalamo–striatal–cortical, and central autonomic systems, was constructed.3. The pattern of Fos immunoreactivity associated with long-lasting isocortical vasodilatation elicited by generalized convulsive seizures in anesthetized rat following cholinergic stimulation of the thalamus can be attributed to both the electrocortical activity and the long-lasting increase in cortical blood flow. We propose that the sustained cerebral cortical blood flow response during convulsive epileptic seizures may implicate intracerebral vasodilatory and vasoconstrictory neural mechanisms. Double-labeled NADPH-d and Fos-positive neurons implicated in maintaining the sustained isocortical vasodilatory response were found in the anterior lateral hypothalamic area. Inhibition of these neurons prevented the increase in cortical blood flow despite an increased metabolic demand manifested by the ictal electrocortical activity.4. Medial temporal lobe atrophy, including hippocampus, amygdala, and parahippocampal gyrus (piriform and entorhinal cortices) are the most common pathology in man. However the origin of medial lobe atrophy remain uncertain. Our results provide evidence that the allocortical microvascular inflammation may be in origin of the neurovascular degenerative processes leading to atrophy.  相似文献

Exposure of developing female rats to estradiol during the perinatal period induced long-lasting dysregulation of gonadal axis and decreased cerebrocortical and plasma concentrations of allopregnanolone. We have now examined the effects of neonatal estradiol administration in female rats on hypothalamic allopregnanolone concentrations and on exploratory, affective, agonistic and sexual behaviors as well as social learning. A single administration of β-estradiol 3-benzoate (EB, 10 μg) on the day of birth resulted in a delay of vaginal opening, acyclicity and ovarian failure. These alterations were associated with a significant decrease in the concentrations of allopregnanolone in the hypothalamus at 21 and 60 days, but not at 7 days, after birth. Neonatal administration of EB also increased agonistic behaviors in adult rats, such as dominant behaviors and following of an ovariectomized intruder, while living attacks unaffected. EB-treated rats showed also an increase in anogenital investigation, associated with a drastic reduction in spontaneous and induced female sexual behaviors (receptivity and proceptivity). In contrast, neonatal administration of EB did not affect locomotor activity, anxiety- and mood-related behaviors, the social transmission of flavor preferences, and seizures sensitivity. These effects of estradiol suggest that it plays a major role in regulation of both the abundance of allopregnanolone and the expression of agonistic and sexual behaviors, while failing to influence affective behaviors and social learning. Thus, the pronounced and persistent decrease in hypothalamic allopregnanolone concentration may be related to the manifestation of agonistic and sexual behaviors.  相似文献
