A massive hybridization between Leuciscus cephalus macedonicus and Chalcalburnus chalcoides macedonicus has been recognized and studied by examining 67 specimens from Lake Volvi (Macedonia, Greece). The majority of meristic and other characters present an intermediate position in the hybrid (total hybrid index Vh = 38.37). Nevertheless, the best expression of intermediacy is shown most clearly by the numbers of anal fin soft rays, lateral line scales and gill rakers, and also by the height of the dorsal fin and the length of the base of anal fin. Of the examined hybrid specimens. 92.5% were females. It seems that hybridization takes place during the reproduction period in the main streams flowing into the lake under special conditions which hinder the migration of the majority of the population of C. chalcoides from the lake to the breeding sites. It is suggested that individuals of C. chalcoides , which manage to arrive in these sites, mate with L. cephalus , the normal inhabitant of the streams, thus producing the hybrid.  相似文献

The present work reports on some chromatic characters and their change with size in two species of Tilapia ( T. zillii and T. guineensis ) and their first generation hybrids. Successful reciprocal hybridizations between T. zillii and T. guineensis were performed in concrete tanks. The hybrids obtained were viable. The colour patterns of the hybrids and their parents were registered during a rearing cycle of 12 months. Between 2 and 13 cm standard length ( L S), the hybrids were found to be heterogeneous and three phenotypes were observed. The type (1) phenotype had a fully yellowish caudal fin without dots, the type (2) phenotype had a bicoloured caudal fin with the upper part clear yellowish and the lower part dark yellowish and without dots and the type (3) had a similar bicoloured caudal fin, but with dots. Above 13 cm L S, the hybrid population was homogenous and all specimens had a bicoloured caudal fin with dots. In T. zillii , all specimens >14 cm L S had a greyish caudal fin with dots while all T. guineensis >13 cm L S were characterized by a bicoloured caudal fin without dots. A multivariate analysis of the morphometric and meristic characters did not allow a clear separation of all groups. The study showed that the external morphology of the hybrids was intermediate to that of the parental species.  相似文献

Studies on the morphometric characteristics and the age and growth of Mugil cephalus (L.) of Bardawil Lake, Egypt, showed that the regression of body measurements on total length was linear and revealed that the standard length, pectoral fin depth and dorsal fin depth were different than the caudal peduncle and head length. Age and growth studies also showed that a straight line relation was determined between scale radius and body length as expressed by the following equation: Y  =−1.2127 + 1.0850 X . Accordingly, M. cephalus attained mean lengths of 14.2, 20.6, 23.9, 26.4, 28.5 and 30.0 cm at 1 to 6 years of age, respectively. Growth of the species is represented by the von Bertalanffy growth equation as: L t=45[1−exp−( t − t o)].  相似文献

Light trap collections on oil and gas platforms in the northern Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana from 1995 to 1997 contained young of tessellated blenny Hypsoblennius invemar , freckled blenny Hypsoblennius ionthas , featherduster blenny Hypleurochilus multifilis , molly miller Scartella cristata and seaweed blenny Parablennius marmoreus , which are described. Interspecific differences were: number of dorsal, anal, pelvic and caudal fin elements; number of mandibular pores; presence or absence of canine teeth, hypural 5 and pectoral fin pigment; width of gill openings; length of preopercular spines (in larvae). Size at settlement differed among some taxa, but all five species settled within a narrow size window of c . 1·5 mm standard length ( L S). Hypsoblennius invemar , H. ionthas , H. multifilis and S. cristata settled at mean sizes between 11·3 and 12·1 mm L S, whereas P. marmoreus settled at a mean size of 19·3 mm L S. Sexually dimorphic differences were consistently evident by 17–18 mm L S in all species but P. marmoreus . The two smallest blennies with external characters normally associated with sexual maturity were a 20 mm male and 21 mm female H. multifilis . Primary caudal fin rays began to bifurcate between 17·0 and 18·3 mm L S in H. invemar , H. ionthas , H. multifilis and S. cristata . Hypleurochilus multifilis displayed the external characteristics of being sexually mature at 20–21 mm L S. Thus, bifurcation of primary caudal fin rays was an indicator of approaching sexual maturity in H. multifilis and this may also be true in the other species studied.  相似文献

Abstract: Based on surveys of species of museum pest insects commonly found in Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden, six species were selected for a study of the effect of exposure to anoxic treatment on the larval stage. An oxygen level of 0.3% (the rest, nitrogen) was applied and lethal exposure times were determined. Anthrenus museorum L. was the most susceptible species (LT99 = 32.2 h), while Attagenus woodroffei Halst. & Green and Attagenus smirnovi Zhantiev (LT99 = 88.1 h) were the most tolerant species. The LT99 value of At. woodroffei was not calculated, as only 50% of the larvae were killed by the treatment. The results indicate that large intraspecific variation is present in these two Attagenus species. Larvae of Anthrenus verbasci (L.) (LT99 = 43.9 h), Reesa vespulae (Milliron) (LT99 = 53.6 h), and Trogoderma angustum (Solier) (LT99 = 57.2 h) showed intermediate tolerance.  相似文献

A new species of glyptosternine catfish, Oreoglanis infulatus , is described from the Lam River drainage in central Vietnam. The new species is distinguished from all its congeners by possessing the following combination of characters: a dark band running across the anal fin, a lunate and uniformly dark caudal fin, the lower lip lacking a medial notch and with a lobulate posterior margin, maxillary barbel with a rounded tip, length of caudal peduncle 19·0–22·6 % L S, depth of caudal peduncle 2·6–3·2 % L S, post-adipose distance 6·8–8·0 % L S, eye diameter 10·5–12·1 % L H, 12 principal caudal-fin rays.  相似文献

For plant populations, gene movement through pollen and seed dispersal governs the size of local genetic neighbourhoods and shapes the opportunities for natural selection and genetic drift. A critical question is how together these two processes influence the evolutionary dynamics of local populations. To assess the respective contributions of pollen and seed flow, we propose a novel indirect assessment of the separate male and female gametic contributions to total effective parental size ( N e), based on parental correlations estimated via kinship coefficients, that can be applied to data sets that include unambiguous genotypes for male and female gametic contributions. Using the endemic Californian valley oak ( Quercus lobata ) as our study species, we apply this method to a set of microsatellite genotypes for two distinct ecological sets of naturally recruiting seedlings with acorns attached. We found that the effective numbers of contributing male parents ( N ep) exceed effective numbers of female parents ( N em) for seedlings established beneath adult trees ( N ep = 8.1 and N em = 1.1), as well as for seedlings established away from adult trees ( N ep = 15.4 and N em = 2.7), illustrating that seed dispersal enhances pollen dispersal and increases the effective number of seed sources in open seedling patches. The resulting effective parental size of seedling populations translates into smaller effective numbers of parents for undispersed vs. dispersed seedlings ( N e = 3.6 and N e = 6.7, respectively). This study introduces a novel statistic method and provides important new evidence that, on a short-term temporal scale, seed dispersal shapes the local neighbourhood size of new recruits.  相似文献

Morphological differences among three color morphotypes occurring almost sympatrically (A, reddish type; B, blackish type; C, brownish type) of Sebastes inermis are clarified. Twenty-six morphometric characters and seven meristic characters were examined on about 20 specimens of each morphotype, 15 of the morphometric characters differing significantly. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the morphometric characters showed morphotype C to differ from the other two morphotypes. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) of the morphometric characters showed clear separation of each morphotype. Four meristic characters also differed significantly. Modes of pectoral fin ray counts of morphotypes A, B, and C were 15, 16, and 17, respectively, and the modes of anal fin ray counts of morphotypes B and C were 7 and 8, respectively. Many individuals of morphotype A had seven or eight anal fin rays. These differences suggested that the three morphotypes may be reproductively isolated from each other. Age at length, growth and reproduction of 220 Mastacembelus mastacembelus specimens from the Atatürk Dam Lake were studied from July 2005 to July 2006. Total lengths and weights ranged from 7.0 to 85.0 cm and from 6 to 1100 g, respectively. Maximum age was 13 years. The regression model fitted to length and weight data was W  =   0.0228  L 2.43 for males and W  =   0.0029  L 2.95 for females. The von Bertalaffy growth equations for males and females were L t  = 99.2 [1−e−0.11 ( t −0.12)] and L t  = 69.2 [1−e−0.26 ( t −0.35)], respectively. Males dominated especially at an older age; the overall sex ratio was 1 : 0.63 (M:F). The breeding period was from May to July. Fecundity ranged from 2540 to 24 000 eggs per female.  相似文献

Salema Sarpa salpa (Linnaeus, 1758), were caught in the middle-eastern Adriatic Sea from August to November 2004. Length range of the samples was between 10.3 and 43.9 cm, with mean values of 25.5 cm in males, 32.6 cm in females, and 11.4 and 20.2cm in immature and hermaphrodite specimens, respectively. Sex ratio (males : females) was 3.1 : 1. Males were observed up to 37 cm length. Hermaphrodites showed lengths between 18 and 21 cm. The species was characterized by protandric hermaphroditism. Size at sexual maturity was 20.6 cm (2 years old) for males. Total length-total weight relationship for the entire population is described by the parameters a  = 0.00893, and b  = 3.1055. Otolith age readings showed that the population consisted of 15 age groups (1–15 years), including a very high proportion of individuals 1–7 years old. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L  = 33.11cm, k  = 0.514, and t 0 = −0.392 years for males and L  = 40.85cm, k  = 0.179, and t 0 = −2.606 years for females. Survival rate of females ( S  = 0.870) was much greater than for males ( S  = 0.769).  相似文献

Adult roach, bream and their presumed F1 hybrid from an Anglian Water reservoir were identified on the basis of morphological and meristic characteristics. The hybrid was clearly intermediate. Four hybrid breeding crosses were induced to spawn by hypophysis. A bream × roach cross (female named first) failed to produce fertile eggs, whereas F1 hybrid × roach, roach × F1 hybrid and F1 hybrid × F1 hybrid all produced fry. Fertility (defined as survival of eggs to hatching) was high for the F1 hybrid × roach back-cross (56%) but low for the others (<2%), in comparison to the pure species controls (roach 69%, bream 76%). Progeny from these crosses were reared until anal fin rays could be counted. These counts indicated intermediacy between the parents and back-crossed individuals, and similarity between F1 hybrids and their F2 progeny.  相似文献

Levels of allozyme variation and intrapopulation spatial genetic structure of the two terrestrial clonal orchids Liparis kumokiri , a self-compatible relatively common species, and L. makinoana , a self-incompatible rare species, were examined for 17 ( N  = 1875) and four ( N  = 425) populations, respectively, in South Korea. Populations of L. makinoana harboured high levels of genetic variation ( H e = 0.319) across 15 loci. In contrast, L. kumokiri exhibited a complete lack of allozyme variation ( H e = 0.000). Considering the lack of genetic variability, it is suggested that current populations of L. kumokiri in South Korea originated from a genetically depauperate ancestral population. For L. makinoana , a significant deficit of heterozygosity (mean F IS = 0.198) was found in population samples excluding clonal ramets, suggesting that pollen dispersal is localized, generating biparental inbreeding. The significant fine-scale genetic structuring (≤ 2 m) found in a previous study, in addition to the moderate levels of population differentiation ( F ST = 0.107) and the significant relationship between genetic and geographical distances ( r  = 0.680) found here, suggests a leptokurtic distribution of seed dispersal for L. makinoana . Although populations of L. makinoana harbour high levels of genetic variation, they are affected by a recent genetic bottleneck. This information suggests that genetic drift and limited gene flow could be the main evolutionary forces for speciation of a species-rich genus such as Liparis .  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 41–48.  相似文献

A rudimentary understanding of age, growth, and life-span is lacking for many non-game fishes. Growth characteristics of the central mudminnow ( Umbra limi ) have not yet been accurately described using reliable hard part analysis. The utility of scales and otoliths as ageing structures and quantified growth was examined in one lake and one stream population of central mudminnow. Scales were found to be of no utility in determining age due to inconsistent formation of yearly annuli and a high incidence of regenerated scales, while otoliths were easily extracted and considered to be an accurate ageing structure. Ages determined from scales were low compared to those from otoliths, and the difference in age interpreted from the two structures increased with fish age. A power function was fitted to describe the length-weight relationship for this species ( a  = 0.0069, b  = 3.175). Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated and compared for each population (Lake: L  = 114.20 mm, K  = 0.30, t 0 = −0.93; Stream: L  = 77.59 mm, K  = 0.63, t 0 = −0.76). The lake population showed greater size at age compared to the stream population, especially at older ages, and achieved a larger maximum size. Growth rate was also greater in the lake population (Lake: 1.74; Stream: 1.09 g year−1). Females were larger at age than males in both populations, however all individuals greater than age 3 were males. This work represents the first successful account of central mudminnow growth using hard part analysis.  相似文献

Based on a meristic and morphometric study of 101 specimens, we recognise 2 valid species in the Antarctic channichthyid genus Cryodraco: Cryodraco antarcticus Dollo, 1900 and C. atkinsoni Regan, 1914. Although the species overlap in most meristic and morphometric characters, we have distinguished several reliable characters for diagnosis and identification. Multidimensional scaling, a nonparametric multivariate technique, clearly separates the two species on the basis of pelvic fin length, head length, number of second dorsal fin rays and origin of the lower lateral line relative to the anal fin rays. We provide a revised identification key to the species of Cryodraco. From a zoogeographical point of view, C. antarcticus has a circum-Antarctic distribution whereas C. atkinsoni is largely confined to the East Antarctic Zoogeographic Province.  相似文献

Synopsis An investigation of the effect of parentage and temperature on the expression of selected meristic characters of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, reveals statistical differences in the number of vertebrae, dorsal fin rays and anal fin rays among test batches of progeny of different parentage. Batches of fertilized ova of the same stock or parentage, when incubated at 9.5 °C and 14.8 °C, produced lower mean dorsal and anal fin ray counts and a higher mean pectoral fin ray count at the higher temperature. Incubation temperature had no significant effect on the number of vertebrae.Significant statistical differences occurring in various characters among groups of rainbow trout of different parental origin provide convincing evidence of genetic inputs into meristic expression. However, the existence of both environmental and genetic inputs into meristic expression in rainbow trout necessitates further investigation before the meaning of observed meristic plasticity in rainbow trout can be resolved.  相似文献

This study analysed the total length ( L T)‐frequency distribution of mackerel icefish Champsocephalus gunnari at South Georgia and Shag Rocks from nine bottom trawl surveys at South Georgia and eight at Shag Rocks between 1987 and 2002. The estimated mean L T of age‐classes 1+, 2+, 3+ and 4+ years during January were, respectively, 14·7, 23·5, 29·8 and 35·1 cm at South Georgia. Age‐classes 1+, 2+ and 3+ years were 18·3, 26·2 and 33·8 cm at Shag Rocks. The derived Bertalanffy growth parameters for South Georgia were: L  = 51·7 cm, k  = 0·27 and t 0 = −0·26. The mean L T of each age‐class of C. gunnari at Shag Rocks was significantly larger than at South Georgia, equivalent to c . 5 months growth, although the annual growth in L T was similar. This is further evidence that C. gunnari hatched earlier at Shag Rocks. At South Georgia, the mean L T of age‐classes 1+ and 3+ years were correlated, and significantly decreased between 1987 and 2002, and were smaller following warmer summers. This decrease in the size of C. gunnari may be the result of reduced food availability linked to climate warming.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to use geometric morphometry as a helpful tool to clarify the overlap between meristic characters (such as the number of anal fin rays) of different fish identification keys employed for the two sister species, Ameiurus melas and Ameiurus nebulosus. Geometric morphometry included shape analysis of 15 landmarks on 432 specimens. The analyses showed significant differences among groups based on the sampling site, while there was no difference among groups based on the number of anal fin rays (used to distinguish species). This suggests that the use of meristic characters for the determination of these two sister species is rather questionable.  相似文献

Comparative analyses of the genetic differentiation in microsatellite markers ( F ST) and leaf morphology characters ( Q ST) of Amphicarpaea edgeworthii Benth. were conducted to gain insight into the roles of random processes and natural selection in the population divergence. Simple sequence repeat analyses on 498 individuals of 19 natural populations demonstrate that a significant genetic differentiation occurs among populations (mean F ST = 0.578), and A. edgeworthii is a highly self-fertilized species (mean selfing rate s  = 0.989). The distribution pattern of genetic diversity in this species shows that central populations possess high genetic diversity (e.g. population WL with H E = 0.673 and population JG with H E = 0.663), whereas peripheral ones have a low H E as in population JD (0.011). The morphological divergence of leaf shape was estimated by the elliptical Fourier analysis on the data from 11 natural and four common garden populations. Leaf morphology analyses indicate the morphological divergence does not show strong correlation with the genetic differentiation ( R  = 0.260, P  = 0.069). By comparing the 95% confidence interval of Q ST with that of F ST, Q ST values for five out of 12 quantitative traits are significantly higher than the average F ST value over eight microsatellite loci. The comparison of F ST and Q ST suggests that two kinds of traits can be driven by different evolutionary forces, and the population divergence in leaf morphology is shaped by local selections.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 505–516.  相似文献

Combined analyses of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellite loci were performed to assess the genetic differentiation of two spring‐spawning ciscoes from each other and from sympatric Coregonus albula in two German lakes. Polymorphism was screened at six microsatellite loci and mtDNA for a total of 247 and 94 ciscoes, respectively. Microsatellite data showed a weak differentiation between spring‐spawning Coregonus fontanae and sympatric C. albula in Lake Stechlin ( F ST = 0–0·008), whereas a significant differentiation was observed between spring‐spawning Coregonus lucinensis and sympatric C. albula in Lake Breiter Luzin ( F ST = 0·013–0·039). A more pronounced genetic difference was observed between both spring‐spawning species ( F ST = 0·05–0·128). Shared mtDNA haplotypes among sympatric species within both Lake Stechlin and Lake Breiter Luzin were observed, whereas no haplotype was shared between C. fontanae and C. lucinensis . These results suggest an independent origin for spring‐spawning ciscoes in each lake. Evidence is also provided for mtDNA introgression of Coregonus sardinella into C. lucinensis and C. albula in Lake Breiter Luzin. Postglacially, this species or at least a population which showed mtDNA introgression has colonized the Baltic Sea basin up to the glacial margin that was located between Lakes Stechlin and Breiter Luzin.  相似文献

Biology of the Macaronesian endemic rockling Gaidropsarus guttatus was studied in the Azores. The overall sex ratio from the samples was highly in favour of females (1 : 6·33). The growth parameters were L  = 24·23, k  = 1·219 and t 0 = −0·059. Fish matured at 15 cm L T and the spawning season was strongly clustered in April.  相似文献
