Phenotypic plasticity is commonly considered to contribute to the invasion success of invasive species. However, the importance of phenotypic plasticity, nitrogen (N) levels and warming to the invasion of invasive species is unclear. The effects of warming and N addition on the morphology, biomass allocation and biochemistry traits of Solidago canadensis and their plasticity were investigated by conducting a pot experiment. The results showed that the effect of N addition on biomass was improved for S. canadensis; whereas warming displayed no significant effect, their positive synergistic interact effect resulted in the overall significant increase in plant performance. The mean phenotypic plasticity indices (MPPI) of biochemistry and total parameters demonstrated a difference between operations, and the higher value was observed in N interaction with temperature treatments than N addition or warming alone. The observed MPPI indicated the biochemistry parameters > morphological parameters > allocation parameters. The MPPI of biochemistry parameters, morphological parameters and total parameters exhibited significant and positive correlations with N level and MPPI of morphological parameters was also significantly positively correlated with the fitness of S. canadensis. These results indicated that the global warming and N addition would make the invaded habitat more suitable for the growth of invasive S. canadensis, and even may effectively increase the invasion risk of S. canadensis through the enhanced phenotypic plasticity, which is a crucial factor to help species deal with the changing environment.

The predicted reduction in precipitation in the eastern Mediterranean due to climate change may expose the natural plant communities to invasive species. We assessed whether natural plant communities along an aridity gradient in Israel were resistant to invasion by considering differences in abiotic conditions and community characteristics in these regions. We considered Conyza canadensis as a model plant as it is a common invader in the region. We examined the mechanisms and functional traits of both the plant communities and C. canadensis that promote or discourage invasion. Study sites represented a rainfall gradient with four ecosystem types: mesic Mediterranean, Mediterranean, semiarid and arid. Our results showed that the mechanisms of community invasion resistance varied along the aridity gradient. At the arid and semiarid sites, water deficiency impaired the establishment of C. canadensis. At the mesic Mediterranean site, plant competition had a negative effect on C. canadensis performance, thus greatly reducing the likelihood of its establishment. We conclude that a decrease in regional precipitation due to climate change may not affect intrinsic resistance characteristics of natural plant communities to invasion in the area.

Plant invasion is a major threat to the integrity of an ecosystem. Exceptionally successful invaders in Europe are the American species of Solidago genus. In this study we examined growth, reproduction, and phenology of Solidago species, of American origin, growing in central Europe (S. altissima, S. canadensis, S. gigantea, S. graminifolia). These taxa were compared with two native species: Solidago virgaurea and Tanacetum vulgare. We observed high differentiation in height, number of shoots, and biomass production between individuals within taxa. Generally, the invasive species produced substantially (two to five times) more biomass than the native ones, being statistically significant in the comparison of alien Solidago graminifolia and S. gigantea versus native S. virgaurea and T. vulgare. The ratio of biomass of reproductive parts to overall biomass varied considerably among years, but generally the lowest one was for Solidago altissima, and the highest for S. graminifolia. It shows a lack of a clear pattern of differentiation between alien and native species in terms of biomass investment in reproduction. We observed a general tendency of allocation of a major part of biomass in rhizomes by phalanx species (S. graminifolia and S. gigantea), while species with guerrilla strategy (S. altissima and S. canadensis) invested more biomass in stems and leaves. However, because of the high variability there was no clear, stable pattern of statistically significant differences between these two groups. The results suggest that S. graminifolia reveals a strong potential of invasion, in spite of its, so far limited, distribution in Europe.

Solidago canadensis L. is a major invasive weed that is highly tolerant to disturbances and difficult to control in China. In order to develop a rapid non-chemical control strategy for this weed in heterogeneous environments, we investigated different treatments including mechanical control (cutting and hoeing) and inoculation with an indigenous pathogen, Sclerotium rolfsii SC64, which was isolated from S. canadensis and applied by means of a solid formulation. Greenhouse and field trials were conducted to test how the control regimes (i.e. individual treatment methods, combination of these methods and different treatment timing) influence control efficiency. The fungal isolate S. rolfsii SC64 caused 70% plant mortality and fresh weight reduction of S. canadensis under 150 cm growth stage, and efficacy increased to 80% when the above-ground material was removed. However, the use of cutting, hoeing or treating with S. rolfsii SC64, on its own, did not provide sufficient control of S. canadensis. Cutting treatments performed in July and September only eliminated sexual reproduction of S. canadensis. Combination of cutting, hoeing and treating with isolate SC64 during the growing season in May, July and September was able to kill more than 90% of the ramets. This combination of methods not only eliminated sexual reproduction of S. canadensis, but also destroyed its underground stems and prevented its regrowth. Therefore, this integrated approach may provide an optima control strategy for S. canadensis.

The importance of plant–soil feedback (PSF) has long been recognized, but the current knowledge on PSF patterns and the related mechanisms mainly stems from laboratory experiments. We aimed at addressing PSF effects on community performance and their determinants using an invasive forb Solidago canadensis. To do so, we surveyed 81 pairs of invaded versus uninvaded plots, collected soil samples from these pairwise plots, and performed an experiment with microcosm plant communities. The magnitudes of conditioning soil abiotic properties and soil biotic properties by S. canadensis were similar, but the direction was opposite; altered abiotic and biotic properties influenced the production of subsequent S. canadensis communities and its abundance similarly. These processes shaped neutral S. canadensis–soil feedback effects at the community level. Additionally, the relative dominance of S. canadensis increased with its ability of competitive suppression in the absence and presence of S. canadensis–soil feedbacks, and S. canadensis‐induced decreases in native plant species did not alter soil properties directly. These findings provide a basis for understanding PSF effects and the related mechanisms in the field conditions and also highlight the importance of considering PSFs holistically.

The significance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the process of plant invasion is still poorly understood. We hypothesize that invasive plants would change local AMF community structure in a way that would benefit themselves but confer less advantages to native plants, thus influencing the extent of plant interactions. An AMF spore community composed of five morphospecies of Glomus with equal density (initial AMF spore community, I-AMF) was constructed to test this hypothesis. The results showed that the invasive species, Solidago canadensis, significantly increased the relative abundance of G. geosperum and G. etunicatum (altered AMF spore community, A-AMF) compared to G. mosseae, which was a dominant morphospecies in the monoculture of native Kummerowia striata. The shift in AMF spore community composition driven by S. canadensis generated functional variation between I-AMF and A-AMF communities. For example, I-AMF increased biomass and nutrient uptake of K. striata in both monocultures and mixtures of K. striata and S. canadensis compared to A-AMF. In contrast, A-AMF significantly enhanced root nitrogen (N) acquisition of S. canadensis grown in mixture. Moreover, mycorrhizal-mediated 15N uptake provided direct evidence that I-AMF and A-AMF differed in their affinities with native and invading species. The non-significant effect of A-AMF on K. striata did not result from allelopathy as root exudates of S. canadensis exhibited positive effects on seed germination and biomass of K. striata under naturally occurring concentrations. When considered together, we found that A-AMF facilitated the invasion of S. canadensis through decreasing competitiveness of the native plant K. striata. The results supported our hypothesis and can be used to improve our understanding of an ecosystem-based perspective towards exotic plant invasion.

Summary Members of the genus Solidago are among the most widely studied model systems in plant population biology. A comparative study of Solidago canadensis, S. altissima, and S. gigantea in an experimental garden showed that the three species had different patterns of shoot growth and development, leaf morphology and physiology, and biomass allocation at harvest. These differences were also found in the field. Contrary to some current taxonomic usage, our results show that S. canadensis should ecologically be treated as a separate taxon distinct from S. altissima, and that the latter may be grouped together with S. gigantea. Many of the biological differences between S. canadensis and the other two taxa, such as differential investment into sexual reproduction versus clonal growth, may be explained by differences in genet architecture. These architectures concern high compared to lower within-genet shoot density resulting from differences in rhizome lengths among the taxa (shorter in S. canadensis than in S. altissima and S. gigantea).

Identifying the mechanism underlying plant invasiveness is a fast-moving research topic in current ecology. Phenotypic plasticity has been pointed out as a trait that can contribute to plant invasiveness. This experiment examines the presence of rapid adaptive evolution favoring plastic biomass partitioning during the invasion process. With that aim, we tested differences in patterns of biomass allocation between populations of Carpobrotus edulis from South Africa (native area) and the Iberian Peninsula (invaded area) growing under different nutrient, water and light availabilities in a common garden experiment. Here we demonstrate that biomass partitioning in response to nutrient availability in C. edulis differs between populations from native and invaded ranges, indicating that this trait could be under selection during the invasion process. Thus, nutrient shortage significantly increased the proportional production of roots in populations from the invaded range, but not in populations from the native area. This plastic root-foraging response may contribute to the optimization of nutrient uptake by plants, and therefore could be considered as an adaptive strategy. Understanding the ecological implications of rapid evolution for plastic biomass partitioning is important in determining processes of plant adaptation to new environments, and contributes to disentangling the mechanisms underlying plant invasiveness.

In Lake Baikal Elodea canadensis Michx. was first observed at the end of the 1970's.Suggestions have been made as to the bringing of E. canadensis to Baikal by aquarists or by transport vehicles and transport together with fishes taken from lakes of the Urals where mass development of the plant was observed at the beginning of the present century. The spread of E. canadensis along Lake Baikal must be due to navigation, but natural factors also affect its spread. The quantitative biomass development of E. canadensis in various areas of the lake is reviewed, and discussed in relation to historical aspects of spread and regulation by environmental factors. The fast spread of E. canadensis, its high competitive quality and metabolic capacities for purifying sewage waters deserve attention.Expansion of E. canadensis may be referred to as a catastrophic phenomenon. Its effect has now covered practically the whole perimeter of Lake Baikal.

High phenotypic plasticity contributes to invasiveness of alien species. Goldenrods of American origin (Solidago canadensis, S. gigantea and Euthamia graminifolia) have successfully invaded Europe, and this success can be related to their high phenotypic plasticity. The aim of our study was to test the hypothesis of higher phenotypic plasticity of invasive goldenrods by comparing them with native taxa: closely related Solidago virgaurea and similar ecologically, invasive in other regions Tanacetum vulgare. The species studied were grown in a common garden on three different substrates with different fertilizers. After 3 years, the height and number of ramets, biomass production and allocation, phenology and nitrate reductase activity (NRA) were measured. The highest level of phenotypic plasticity was exhibited by the competitively weak native species S. virgaurea. The invasive species produced relatively high biomass and exhibited a moderate level of phenotypic plasticity. Variability in the studied traits did not always correlate with differences in substrates. The invasion success of non-native goldenrods is not caused by their having a higher phenotypic plasticity than native species. Rather, the non-natives should be considered as “Jack of all traits, and master of some”.

Interspecific facilitation contributes to the assembly of desert plant communities. However, we know little of how desert communities invaded by exotic species respond to facilitation along regional-scale aridity gradients. These measures are essential for predicting how desert plant communities might respond to concomitant plant invasion and environmental change. Here, we evaluated the potential for Bromus tectorum (a dominant invasive plant species) and the broader herbaceous plant community to form positive associations with native shrubs along a substantial aridity gradient across the Great Basin, Mojave, and San Joaquin Deserts in North America. Along this gradient, we sampled metrics of abundance and performance for B. tectorum, all native herbaceous species combined, all exotic herbaceous species combined, and the total herbaceous community using 180 pairs of shrub and open microsites. Across the gradient, B. tectorum formed strong positive associations with native shrubs, achieving 1.6–2.2 times greater abundance, biomass, and reproductive output under native shrubs than away from shrubs, regardless of relative aridity. In contrast, the broader herbaceous community was not positively associated with native shrubs. Interestingly, increasing B. tectorum abundance corresponded to decreasing native abundance, native species richness, exotic species richness, and total species richness under but not away from shrubs. Taken together, these findings suggest that native shrubs have considerable potential to directly (by increasing abundance and performance) and indirectly (by increasing competitive effects on neighbors) facilitate B. tectorum invasion across a large portion of the non-native range.

A greenhouse mesocosm experiment, representing earthworm-free North American Acer-dominated forest floor and soil conditions, was used to examine the individual and combined effects of initial invasion by three European earthworm species (Dendrobaena octaedra, Lumbricus rubellus and Lumbricus terrestris) on the forest floor and upper soil horizons, N and P availability, and the mortality and biomass of four native understory plant species (Acer saccharum, Aquilegia canadensis, Aralia racemosa, and Carex pensylvanica). All the three earthworm species combined caused larger impacts on most variables measured than any single earthworm species. These included loss of O horizon mass, decreased thickness of the O horizon and increased thickness of the A horizon, and higher availability of N and P. The latter finding differs from field reports where nutrients were less available after invasion, and probably represents an initial transient increase in nutrient supply as earthworms consume and incorporate the O horizon into the A horizon. Earthworms also increased mortality of plants and decreased total mesocosm plant biomass, but here the impact of all the three earthworm species was no greater than that of L. terrestris and/or L. rubellus alone. This study corroborates field studies that European earthworm invasions alter North American forest ecosystem processes by initiating a cascade of impacts on plant community composition and soil properties.

Conversion of leaf litter to secondary production by a shredding caddis-fly
Summary 1. The aim of this study was to estimate the amount of leaf litter ingested by the shredder caddis‐fly Sericostoma vittatum in a small stream in central Portugal. The study combined field data on population dynamics and laboratory experiments to determine the effect of temperature (9, 12, 15 and 18 °C), leaf species (Alnus glutinosa, Castanea sativa, Populus × canadensis and Quercus andegavensis) and animal mass on growth and consumption rates of the larvae. 2. Sericostoma vittatum had two overlapping cohorts, each of which needed about 1 year to complete development. Mean annual density and biomass were 115 individuals m?2 and 83 mg m?2, respectively. Secondary production was 0.44 g m?2 year?1 and production/biomass ratio was 4.9–5 year?1. 3. Consumption rates of larvae increased with temperature up to the optimal temperature for growth which varied between 13.7 and 16.7 °C depending on the diet. 4. Consumption rate was positively related to larval mass but growth rate was negatively related with larval mass. Larvae fed on A. glutinosa and P. × canadensis had higher consumption and growth rates than those fed on C. sativa or Q. andegavensis. 5. Annual leaf litter consumption by S. vittatum was estimated as 14–22 g m?2 depending on the diet. No relationship was observed between the amount of detritus consumed by the population of this caddis‐fly in the field and either water temperature, the stock of detritus on the stream bottom, or larval abundance. Instead, the temporal dynamics of leaf litter consumption by S. vittatum were controlled by its life history. 6. This study highlights the influence of factors such as animal size and water temperature on the invertebrate energetics. Models explaining how these variables affect invertebrate production efficiency may be very important for obtaining accurate estimates of the role of shredders in the energy flow across stream ecosystems.

Negative or positive feedback between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and host plants can contribute to plant species interactions, but how this feedback affects plant invasion or resistance to invasion is not well known. Here we tested how alterations in AMF community induced by an invasive plant species generate feedback to the invasive plant itself and affect subsequent interactions between the invasive species and its native neighbors. We first examined the effects of the invasive forb Solidago canadensis L. on AMF communities comprising five different AMF species. We then examined the effects of the altered AMF community on mutualisms formed with the native legume forb species Kummerowia striata (Thunb.) Schindl. and on the interaction between the invasive and native plants. The host preferences of the five AMF were also assessed to test whether the AMF form preferred mutualistic relations with the invasive and/or the native species. We found that S. canadensis altered AMF spore composition by increasing one AMF species (Glomus geosporum) while reducing Glomus mosseae, which is the dominant species in the field. The host preference test showed that S. canadensis had promoted the abundance of AMF species (G. geosporum) that most promoted its own growth. As a consequence, the altered AMF community enhanced the competitiveness of invasive S. canadensis at the expense of K. striata. Our results demonstrate that the invasive S. canadensis alters soil AMF community composition because of fungal-host preference. This change in the composition of the AMF community generates positive feedback to the invasive S. canadensis itself and decreases AM associations with native K. striata, thereby making the native K. striata less dominant.

Background: Seed mass is a life history trait that is related to invasiveness. Under limiting conditions, a trade-off is observed whereby an increase in seed mass occurs at the expense of seed numbers; if the above trade-off holds across climatic gradients it can provide an opportunity to assess the fitness/invasive potential of exotic plants.

Aims: To examine the variation in the life history traits of Eschscholzia californica populations across climatic gradients and to relate these traits to observed invasiveness.

Methods: We examined 19 populations in Chile. For each population we related seed mass, seed number, the slope of trade-off between seed mass and number and plant density with annual precipitation and mean annual temperature.

Results: Seed number and the coefficient of variation in seed mass were positively correlated with climatic variables. Trade-off was detected in 26% of the populations and no relationship was detected with climatic gradient. Plant density was negatively associated with precipitation.

Conclusions: The results suggest that for E. californica producing seeds with a variety of sizes is an optimal strategy to face geographic heterogeneity and hence to increase its invasiveness. Increased production of seeds at the cool and wet southern limit of the current range of the species does not contribute to an increase in its invasiveness.

Solidago canadensis, a perennial Compositae plant originating from North America, was introduced into China as a horticultural plant in 1935. Under natural conditions, S. canadensis allocates large amounts of energy to sexual reproduction and produces many seeds, which reflects an r-strategy with high seed number and small seed size. In addition, naturalized populations have a great capacity to grow clonally with underground stems. S. canadensis has become an invasive weed in eastern China, and has caused serious damages to agricultural production and ecosystems in several provinces in China. In order to understand the reproductive characteristics of S. canadensis and effectively control its spread, we examined soil conditions, seed characteristics, seed germination and the capacity for asexual reproduction in different plant parts. We investigated the population dispersion of S. canadensis in fixed sites for three years, and analyzed the seasonal dynamics of the morphological parameters of the underground parts and the caloric values of different organs of S. canadensis. We also compared differences in the root systems of S. canadensis and composite exotic weeds. The following results were obtained:
1)  Under natural conditions, the germination season of S. canadensis lasts from March to October, with a peak from April to May. Vegetative growth and asexual reproduction are especially vigorous during summer due to high temperatures and soil drought stress. On the other hand, the rainy season proves suitable for seed germination. Most S. canadensis flower between September and January, and fruit in late October. A mature plant can produce about 20000 seeds. The mean weight of 1000 seeds ranges from 0.045 g to 0.050 g, and the mean seed moisture content ranges from 60% to 80%. The light-winged seeds disperse readily by air, water, vehicles, human activity or through livestock.
2)  S. canadensis seeds have a wide tolerance for different values of pH, salinity and soil moisture. The mean percent germination of seeds is 30% under suitable conditions. The results of seed germination under various environmental stresses and investigation of soil conditions indicate that well-aerated, slightly acidic soils with low salinity are suitable for the growth of S. canadensis. Additionally, S. canadensis has a high tolerance for contamination by heavy metal elements including Zn, Cu and Pb, but has low accumulation coefficients for these elements.
3)  S. canadensis reproduces asexually via underground rhizomes and nodes on the stem base to recruit new individuals, and in plants that experience mechanical damage, this reproductive strategy is used to produce clonal shoots. The capacity for asexual reproduction among different plant parts rank as follows: underground parts > stem-base (20 cm) > stem-base (30 cm) > stem-base (45 cm) > stem. Further, with increasing mechanical damage, the quantity of shoots produced by the plant decreases.
4)  The morphological parameters of the root system of S. canadensis including length, surface area, volume, and average diameter are greater than for composite exotic weeds. These parameters indicate that S. canadensis has the physiological potential to widely invade China.
5)  The aboveground growth rate and most of the underground morphological parameters vary remarkably among the seasons, with a peak normally occurring in September. In August, a fraction of the energy in leaves and stems is allocated underground to increase fine root growth and water uptake during hot weather. Additionally, the seasonal dynamics of the underground morphological parameters and the caloric values of different organs of S. canadensis enhance its reproductive ability. Based on the results above, we conclude that S. canadensis has great invasive potential in China. We suggest that urgent measures should be taken to control its further spread, and to minimize its impact on local plant diversity.
