Estuaries are globally important to fisheries but face many anthropogenic stressors that reduce water quality and degrade benthic habitat. The Maumee River estuary has been degraded by industrial contaminants, high sediment and nutrient loads, channelization and elimination of surrounding wetlands, lessening its value as spawning habitat for fishes of Lake Erie. Regulation and better management practices (BMPs) in the watershed have improved the water quality in this estuary, which should result in a response of the biotic community. We compared recent (2010/2011) larval fish assemblage data to similar data from the 1970s (1976/1977) in order to identify changes due to improved water and habitat quality. Family‐level diversity was greater in recent study years compared to the 1970s and family richness increased from 6 to 10. In addition, the abundance of lithophilic spawning fishes was significantly greater in the recent study years. Increased diversity and family richness were consistent with increased water quality in the Maumee River whereas the observed increase in abundance of lithophilic spawners was consistent with an increase in the amount or quality of benthic habitat used by species in these families for spawning. Better wastewater management and agricultural practices in coastal watersheds can benefit the early life stages of fishes, thus benefitting coastal fisheries. Furthermore, larval fish assemblages may be useful indicators of biological integrity because of their sensitivities to environmental change. Routine sampling of estuarine larval fish assemblages could provide practitioners with insight into ecosystem changes and measure the response of the biotic community to restoration.  相似文献

The Gambia River of West Africa is a large unobstructed river, characterized by a natural flow regime and lateral connectivity across its floodplain. Construction of a major dam, however, is planned. We compared patterns of fish diversity, habitat use, assemblage structure, and the distribution of trophic position and body morphology in riverine and floodplain habitats in Niokolo Koba National Park, located downstream of the planned dam site. A total of 49 fish species were captured, revealing a lognormal distribution as expected for species‐rich assemblages. Fish species exhibited a range of habitat use patterns, from generalist to highly habitat‐specific, and appeared to migrate laterally among habitats between seasons. Species richness was homogenous among habitats in the wet season yet appeared to increase with isolation from the main river in the dry season. Fish assemblage structure was best explained by the interaction between habitat type and season, underlining the importance of the natural flow regime and lateral connectivity among floodplain habitats. The abundance of fishes having elongate bodies increased with isolation from the main channel in the wet season only. The distribution of fishes having compressed cross‐sectional morphology decreased with isolation from the main channel in the dry season only. These patterns of trait distribution support the conclusion that variation in hydrologic connectivity structures the fish assemblage. Our results suggest that altered flow regimes and loss of floodplain habitats after damming could lead to both decreased taxonomic and functional diversity of the fish assemblage.  相似文献

The effects of navigation on young-of-the-year (YOY) fish were investigated for the Danube River based on an integrative approach. During YOY growing season, wave height, wave frequency and water currents were recorded. Synchronously, fish drift and fish abundance of YOY were monitored in two distinct inshore nursery habitats—a gravel bar and a groyne field. The characteristics of vessel-induced waves were correlated to YOY-drift. In both habitats, an increase in drift densities during ship passages was observed. At the same time, assemblage composition and drift densities differed between habitat types. At the gravel bar, drift densities of larval cyprinids—representing many keystone species of the Danube—were higher during ship passages. In the groyne field, drift was low and percids dominated the YOY-assemblage along the shore. Banks with gentle slopes in the main channel seem to be particularly affected by vessel-induced wave wash. Precisely such habitats are often established within the scope of modern river restoration projects because they provide suitable nursery habitats for riverine fish species. Beside the positive effects on biota, the establishment of these habitats in navigable reaches may create problems for YOY-fish due to displacement effects induced by ship-generated waves.  相似文献

Danube main channel deep pools are in-stream habitats of high ecological relevance. We used dual-frequency identification sonar to investigate seasonal and diel fish abundance in two hydrodynamically different deep pools in the main channel of the Danube River in 2008. In general, fish of different species were present in both deep pools throughout the year, irrespective of water level. High fish abundance was recorded during autumn and winter, low abundance during spring and summer. During low discharge and low temperature and particularly during low flow velocity, low kinetic energy and low shear stress, high fish abundance in densely packed aggregations were observed, a clear indication for the refuge capacity of deep pools. In contrast, during turbulent hydraulic conditions with high flow velocity, high turbulent kinetic energy and high shear stress, low fish abundance occurred, mainly consisting of single fish, small fish shoals and benthic fish specimens. Furthermore, we could reveal that calm as well as turbulent pools fulfil the requirements as refuge and feeding habitat of eurytopic, piscivorous catfish throughout the year. The application of a multiple linear model based on the hydrological parameters discharge and water temperature as well as the hydraulic parameters flow velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and shear stress provided highly significant evidence between the observed and the expected seasonal fish abundance in the deep pools (R 2 = 0.77, P < 0.001). For the first time these results make clear that the main channel deep pools are important refuge and resource habitats of different species of the Danube fish community. Deep pools are key habitats for the in-stream fish community of the Danube River.  相似文献

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS) contains a diverse array of coastal habitats that are critical for the survival of the early stages of reef fish; however, the knowledge on the abundance and distribution of the early stages of coastal fishes is still limited in this region. This study investigated the species richness of larval and juvenile fishes using a combination of a sled net, standard plankton net, and a nightlight lift-net; these were deployed simultaneously at Bacalar Chico, a site on the MBRS within the protected “Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Xcalak” (PNAX). We collected 53 families and 118 species of larval and juvenile fishes in a small area of about 3 km2. This species diversity of early life-history stages is greater than previously found in surveys on the MBRS. Each gear caught a number of species exclusively, so combined sampling with the three methods provided a much fuller picture of the local larval and juvenile fish assemblage. A species-accumulation model estimated that the samples likely represented 84% of the total assemblage. Many species caught were represented predominantly by newly settled juveniles, underscoring the importance of this coastal habitat for settlement of many ecologically and economically important fish species. This information is expected to improve the conservation and management strategies in the fragile PNAX coastal zones by providing additional information based on original field data to raise awareness among managers about the ecological relevance of these coastal habitats. This study provides encouraging evidence that the PNAX is a well-suited natural protected area to preserve a critical fish habitat in a hotspot of marine biodiversity.  相似文献

The global degradation of coral reefs is having profound effects on the structure and species richness of associated reef fish assemblages. Historically, variation in the composition of fish communities has largely been attributed to factors affecting settlement of reef fish larvae. However, the mechanisms that determine how fish settlers respond to different stages of coral stress and the extent of coral loss on fish settlement are poorly understood. Here, we examined the effects of habitat degradation on fish settlement using a two-stage experimental approach. First, we employed laboratory choice experiments to test how settlers responded to early and terminal stages of coral degradation. We then quantified the settlement response of the whole reef fish assemblage in a field perturbation experiment. The laboratory choice experiments tested how juveniles from nine common Indo-Pacific fishes chose among live colonies, partially degraded colonies, and dead colonies with recent algal growth. Many species did not distinguish between live and partially degraded colonies, suggesting settlement patterns are resilient to the early stages of declining coral health. Several species preferred live or degraded corals, and none preferred to associate with dead, algal-covered colonies. In the field experiment, fish recruitment to coral colonies was monitored before and after the introduction of a coral predator (the crown-of-thorns starfish) and compared with undisturbed control colonies. Starfish reduced live coral cover by 95–100%, causing persistent negative effects on the recruitment of coral-associated fishes. Rapid reductions in new recruit abundance, greater numbers of unoccupied colonies and a shift in the recruit community structure from one dominated by coral-associated fishes before degradation to one predominantly composed of algal-associated fish species were observed. Our results suggest that while resistant to coral stress, coral death alters the process of replenishment of coral reef fish communities.  相似文献

To evaluate the influence of main channel–floodplain connectivity on fish assemblage diversity in floodplains associated with streams and small rivers, fish assemblages and habitat characteristics were surveyed at 24 stream reaches in the Champlain Valley of Vermont, U.S.A. Fish assemblages differed markedly between the main channel and the floodplain. Fish assemblage diversity was greatest at reaches that exhibited high floodplain connectivity. Whereas certain species inhabited only main channels or floodplains, others utilized both main channel and floodplain habitats. Both floodplain fish α-diversity and γ-diversity of the entire stream corridor were positively correlated with connectivity between the main channel and its floodplain. Consistent with these results, species turnover (as measured by β-diversity) was negatively correlated with floodplain connectivity. Floodplains with waterbodies characterized by a wide range of water depths and turbidity levels exhibited high fish diversity. The results suggest that by separating rivers from their floodplains, incision and subsequent channel widening will have detrimental effects on multiple aspects of fish assemblage diversity across the stream–floodplain ecosystem.  相似文献

Fish assemblages in large rivers are highly diverse communities. However, a single method to describe these complex systems adequately is not available as of yet. In this paper we propose a combination of normalized catch-per-unit-effort data of three fish sampling methods, thus providing a more inclusive representation of the overall assemblage. We investigate fish species occurrence and abundance in a survey at three consecutive sites in the free-flowing main channel of the Austrian Danube east of Vienna. Using boat and wading electrofishing, as well as longline fishing we collected data in four mesohabitats at each site. We analysed richness, assemblage structure and abundance of single species and tested site and mesohabitat as differentiating forces on the fish assemblage structure, applying PERMANOVA and NMDS. The investigated sites are populated by a species-rich fish assemblage, of which we collected a total of 36 species. The composition of the assemblage was rather consistent except for the occasional occurrence of rare species. At the smaller mesohabitat scale, however, the assemblages differed considerably and hydromorphological conditions were apparently the major structuring force. Overall, the combination of methods considerably improves the assessment across sites and mesohabitats and contributes to our understanding of large river fish assemblages.  相似文献

Landscape-scale patterns of freshwater fish diversity and assemblage structure remain poorly documented in many areas of Central America, while aquatic ecosystems throughout the region have been impacted by habitat degradation and hydrologic alterations. Diadromous fishes may be especially vulnerable to these changes, but there is currently very little information available regarding their distribution and abundance in Central American river systems. We sampled small streams at 20 sites in the Sixaola River basin in southeastern Costa Rica to examine altitudinal variation in the diversity and species composition of stream fish assemblages, with a particular focus on diadromous species. A set of environmental variables was also measured in the study sites to evaluate how changes in fish assemblage structure were related to gradients in stream habitat. Overall, fish diversity and abundance declined steeply with increasing elevation, with very limited species turnover. The contribution of diadromous fishes to local species richness and abundance increased significantly with elevation, and diadromous species dominated assemblages at the highest elevation sites. Ordination of the sampling sites based on fish species composition generally arranged sites by elevation, but also showed some clustering based on geographic proximity. The dominant gradient in fish community structure was strongly correlated with an altitudinal habitat gradient identified through ordination of the environmental variables. The variation we observed in stream fish assemblages over relatively small spatial scales has significant conservation implications and highlights the ecological importance of longitudinal connectivity in Central American river systems.  相似文献

Collections of fish assemblages from streams in the midwestern United States were used to examine assemblage-level effects of spatial variation in relative abundance of the red shiner, Cyprinella lutrensis, a widespread and highly abundant minnow species. This species has been widely introduced outside its native range and is suspected to have impacted local assemblages where it has become established. Given its overall dominance of midwest fish assemblages, and its suspected impact on assemblage structure, we asked if structure of the residual fish assemblages (red shiners excluded) was a function of the relative abundance of red shiners throughout the native range of C. lutrensis in the USA. Although red shiner ranked first in abundance in half of the assemblages and numerically dominated 28% of the assemblages, red shiner relative abundance in an assemblage had no detectable effect on richness, diversity, evenness, or complexity of other (residual) species in the assemblage. Relative abundance of red shiners did have a positive effect on the abundance of benthic minnows in the residual assemblage, but not on water column minnows that are ecologically most like red shiners. Environmental factors did not explain a significant amount of the variation in relative abundance of red shiners, but did explain some variation in residual assemblage structure. Although widespread and numerically dominant at many localities, red shiners do not appear to have a strong impact on local fish assemblage structure within their native range. This is in sharp contrast to the reported negative effects of red shiners on fish assemblages where they have been introduced outside their native range.  相似文献

Synopsis Twenty-two fish aggregation devices were deployed in 14 m of water off South Carolina. Species composition and abundance were determined by diver visual census on eight occasions from May through November, 1985. A total of 21 families and 36 species of fishes was observed at 121 stations. Pelagic fishes dominated the fauna with a 99.3% relative abundance, and Decapterus punctatus accounted for 97.6% of the individuals. Caranx crysos, Diplectrum formosum, Decapterus punctatus, Centropristis striata and Monacanthus hispidus were the most frequent species. Total fish abundance, number of species and abundance of four of the six most common species were significantly affected by season. Hurricane activity may have caused a significant drop in pelagic fish abundance at the FADs in July. No significant correlations among species abundances were found after removal of season and FAD type effects. Spatial zonation and seasonal occurrence patterns suggest some competition among pelagic fishes. Several factors that regulate FAD faunal abundance and composition are hypothesized, including: juvenile fish availability, availability of shelter, availability of adequate food resources, interspecific and intraspecific competition, severe sea conditions, and sporadic intrusions of large predatory fishes. It is hypothesized that the abundances of benthic and pelagic FAD fishes are correlated and that there is a direct or indirect energetic link between shallow water pelagic and benthic fish assemblages near FADs.  相似文献

The densities of two benthic fishes, the Siberian stone loach (Noemacheilus barbatulus) and the wrinklehead sculpin (Cottus nozawae), and the biomass of their food resources (i.e., periphyton and benthic invertebrates) were compared between forest and grassland streams in northern Hokkaido, Japan, to examine whether riparian deforestation had positive effects on the benthic fishes via enhancement of food availability. The comparisons indicated that riparian vegetation had little influence on periphyton, invertebrates, or fishes. Regression analysis indicated that spatial variations in loach and sculpin densities were explained more by substrate heterogeneity, competitor abundance, or both, rather than by food abundance. However, when the two species were combined as benthic insectivores, a strong correlation was found between total benthic fish density and invertebrate biomass. Our results suggest that, although total benthic fish abundance was food limited, riparian vegetation had no positive effects via food availability on the benthic fishes in our streams.  相似文献

Temporal variation in species abundances occurs in all ecological communities. Here, we explore the role that this temporal turnover plays in maintaining assemblage diversity. We investigate a three-decade time series of estuarine fishes and show that the abundances of the individual species fluctuate asynchronously around their mean levels. We then use a time-series modelling approach to examine the consequences of different patterns of turnover, by asking how the correlation between the abundance of a species in a given year and its abundance in the previous year influences the structure of the overall assemblage. Classical diversity measures that ignore species identities reveal that the observed assemblage structure will persist under all but the most extreme conditions. However, metrics that track species identities indicate a narrower set of turnover scenarios under which the predicted assemblage resembles the natural one. Our study suggests that species diversity metrics are insensitive to change and that measures that track species ranks may provide better early warning that an assemblage is being perturbed. It also highlights the need to incorporate temporal turnover in investigations of assemblage structure and function.  相似文献

Macroecology of a host-parasite relationship   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The larvae of freshwater mussels are obligate ectoparasites on fishes while adults are sedentary and benthic. Dispersal of mussels is dependent on the movement of fish hosts, a regional process, but growth and reproduction should be governed by local processes. Thus, mussel assemblage attributes should be predictable from the regional distribution and abundance of fishes. At a broad spatial scale in the Red River drainage, USA, mussel species richness and fish species richness were positively associated; maximum mussel richness was limited by fish richness, but was variable beneath that constraint. Measured environmental variables and the associated local fish assemblages each significantly accounted for the regional variation in mussel assemblages. Furthermore, mussel assemblages showed strong spatial autocorrelation. Variation partitioning revealed that pure fish effects accounted for 15.4% of the variation in mussel assemblages; pure spatial and environmental effects accounted for 16.1% and 7.8%, respectively. Shared variation among fish, space and environmental variables totaled 40%. Of this shared variation, 36.8% was associated with the fish matrix. Thus, the variation in mussel assemblages that was associated with the distribution and abundance of fishes was substantial (> 50%), indicating that fish community structure is an important determinant of mussel community structure. Although animals commonly disperse plants and, thus, influence the structure of plant communities, our results show a strong macroecological association between two disparate animal groups with one strongly affecting the assemblage structure of the other.  相似文献

The Eocene fishes of Monte Bolca: the earliest coral reef fish assemblage   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The fish assemblage from the Eocene deposits of Monte Bolca, Northern Italy, are compared with those of Recent coral reefs. A family-level taxonomic definition of a Recent coral reef fish assemblage is formulated to permit direct comparisons. On this basis, the Monte Bolca fishes represent the earliest clearly defined coral reef fish assemblage. Quantitative analyses of the relative abundance of fish families revealed significant differences between the two assemblages. The Bolca assemblage has Mesozoic links (Pycnodontiformes) and non-perciform taxa are relatively abundant, particularly the Beryciformes (Holocentridae). However, Bolca represents the earliest record of a perciform-dominated benthic fish assemblage (68.4% of all non-clupeid taxa). Within the Perciformes, the abundance of the major reef fish lineages (higher squamipinnes and Labroidei) differs markedly between the two assemblages. The numerical dominance of labroid fishes on coral reefs appears to have been a relatively recent occurrence.  相似文献

In this study, the relative role of spatio‐temporal factors and associated environmental variables (water transparency and temperature) were quantified in relation to gillnet samples of fishes in a large and shallow lake (Lake Balaton, Hungary). Most of the variance (56·1%) in the relative abundance data (%) was related to the vertical segregation of fishes. This gradient substantially affected the catch per unit effort (CPUE) by number of the dominant species, the surface‐oriented bleak Alburnus alburnus and the benthic common bream Abramis brama. It also influenced total CPUE, mean fish mass and species richness and diversity. At the lake level, horizontal habitat heterogeneity (i.e. littoral v. offshore) accounted for only 8·3% of the total variance in relative abundance data, but was important in structuring the CPUE of the ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua and the pikeperch Sander lucioperca. The longitudinal environmental gradient (i.e. lake basin), year and season of sampling, water transparency and temperature had significant effects on relative abundance only at the habitat level, but were also important components of variability of CPUE in some species at the lake level. As sampling schemes need to consider the main gradients in fish assemblage distributions, the use of surface and pelagic gillnets should be more intensively incorporated in the study and monitoring of fish assemblages in shallow lakes and lake habitats.  相似文献

Habitat structure is frequently an important variable affecting species’ abundances and diversity, and identifying the key aspects and spatial scales of habitat complexity is critical for understanding the ecology and conservation of a range of communities. Many coral-reef fishes are intimately linked with benthic habitat structure, and previous research has demonstrated rugosity as an important predictive variable of assemblage parameters. However, these studies typically consider rugosity at small scales, amalgamate multiple habitat features, or are semi-quantitative. This study considers meso-scale rugosity (within 51 plots of 25 m2 on a Belizean forereef) generated by varying coral densities, heights, and complexities. Seven rugosity metrics were calculated for each plot, and were regressed against each of 11 fish assemblage parameters. Intra-habitat variability of each fish parameter was significantly positively or curvilinearly correlated to at least one metric of meso-scale rugosity, but the metric generating the strongest correlation varied. The abundance of small fishes, and consequently most of the assemblage statistics (e.g., total fish abundance and diversity) were best predicted by the number of tall (>50 cm) corals. The abundance of damselfishes, parrotfish biomass, the abundances of medium-sized and large fishes, and total fish biomass were curvilinearly related to mean coral height. The abundances of wrasses and surgeonfishes were most strongly correlated with the number of corals within a plot. Because coral-generated meso-scale rugosity is an important factor influencing intra-habitat variation in fishes, it should be explicitly considered when investigating fish-habitat relationships and predicting the impacts of coral mortality on ecosystem processes and services.  相似文献

Shore fish community structure off the Jordanian Red Sea coast was determined on fringing coral reefs and in a seagrass-dominated bay at 6 m and 12 m depths. A total of 198 fish species belonging to 121 genera and 43 families was recorded. Labridae and Pomacentridae dominated the ichthyofauna in terms of species richness and Pomacentridae were most abundant. Neither diversity nor species richness was correlated to depth. The abundance of fishes was higher at the deep reef slope, due to schooling planktivorous fishes. At 12 m depth abundance of fishes at the seagrass-dominated site was higher than on the coral reefs. Multivariate analysis demonstrated a strong influence on the fish assemblages by depth and benthic habitat. Fish species richness was positively correlated with hard substrate cover and habitat diversity. Abundance of corallivores was positively linked with live hard coral cover. The assemblages of fishes were different on the shallow reef slope, deep reef slope and seagrass meadows. An analysis of the fish fauna showed that the Gulf of Aqaba harbours a higher species richness than previously reported. The comparison with fish communities on other reefs around the Arabian Peninsula and Indian Ocean supported the recognition of an Arabian subprovince within the Indian Ocean. The affinity of the Arabian Gulf ichthyofauna to the Red Sea is not clear. Received in revised form: 2 November 2001 Electronic Publication  相似文献

The influence of wind and wave exposure on larval fish assemblages within a large bay system was investigated. Larval fishes were sampled from two areas with vastly different exposure to waves and wind, namely the windward and leeward sectors of Algoa Bay. In total, 5702 larval fishes were collected using a modified larval seine. Of these, 4391 were collected in the leeward and 1311 in the windward sector of the bay, representing a total of 23 families and 57 species. Dominant fish families included Clinidae, Engraulidae, Kyphosidae, Mugilidae, Soleidae and Sparidae, similar to the situation elsewhere, highlighting continuity in the composition of larval fish assemblages and the utilization of surf zones by a specific group of larval fishes. Nineteen estuary‐associated marine species occurred within the surf zones of Algoa Bay and dominated catches (86·7%) in terms of abundance. Postflexion larvae comprised > 80% of the catch, indicating the importance of the seemingly inhospitable surf zone environment for the early life stages of many fish species. The greatest species diversity was observed within the windward sector of the bay. Distance‐based linear modelling identified wave period as the environmental variable explaining the largest proportion of the significant variation in the larval fish assemblage. The physical disturbance generated by breaking waves could create a suitable environment for fish larvae, sheltered from predators and with an abundance of food resources.  相似文献
