Cod Gadus morhua , haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus , pollack Pollachius pollachius and saithe Pollachius virens were abundant fishes on herring Clupea harengus spawning grounds o. southwestern Norway. Their diets were species specific and ontogenetic changes were similar to patterns observed in other areas, indicating both inter- and intraspecific resource sharing. However, strong interspecific diet overlap occurred when cod and pollack preyed upon sandeel Ammodytes marinus , and when all the gadoids fed on herring eggs during the herring spawning season in the spring. These prey items were very abundant and the extensive diet overlap may not reflect strong competitive interaction.  相似文献

The strategy of multiple spawning is examined in several commercially important species—in particular turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.); halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.); cod, Gadus morhua L.; and northern anchovy, Engraulis mordax Girard. Aspects of special relevance to fishery science and commercial and experimental cultivation are discussed. These include changes in batch fecundity and egg size as the spawning season progresses; the timing and methodology of fecundity estimations; ovulatory/spawning rhythms; the effect of temperature on the ageing rate of retained ovulated oocytes and the interovulatory period; ovulation prediction in hand-stripped broodstocks to facilitate the collection of good quality, freshly ovulated eggs, and the effect of maternal stress on the ovulatory/spawning rhythm. The implications of these phenomena are discussed in terms of recommended practices for the culturist, experimentalist and fisheries scientist.  相似文献

Aspects of the reproduction of reared cod, Gadus morhua L., with special emphasis on the females, were studied under laboratory conditions. The fecundity and condition factor were 2–5 and 1–5 times, respectively, that of wild cod. A total of 18 spawning females were kept in separate tanks/ chambers, each with one or two males. Seven of the 18 females were classified as stressed, based upon behaviour, irregular spawning intervals and low fertilization rates of the eggs. The reared cod were found to spawn 17–19 batches. The number of eggs liberated in each batch normally followed a smooth, dome-shaped curve with time. The fertilization rate was normally 100%. Egg size decreased from first to last batch and the egg dry weight decreased by about 20–30%. The reared cod showed the same egg diameter to dry weight relation as wild cod. Egg diameter of first batch and maternal fish length were significantly positively correlated. The mean spawning interval for the female and the mean water temperature during its spawning were negatively correlated. The reared cod spawned in both the night and the day for about 50–60 days.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to characterize the impact of a low-fat (LF; 1% fat) diet, a high-fat (HF; 25% fat) diet, and a standard (SD; 5% fat) diet on immune and oxidative parameters in a 20% body surface area burn animal model fed ad libitum for 10 days postinjury. Although the mechanisms are poorly understood, the amount of dietary lipid in nutritional support has been shown to have immunomodulatory effects after burn injury. Burned mice fed the LF diet showed a normal response in activated splenocyte proliferation compared to burned animals that received the SD or HF diet. Animals fed the SD and HF diets presented increased production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 response after burn injury, which is associated with inhibited splenocyte proliferation. The total thiol concentration in spleen cells from burned animals kept on the HF diet was significantly higher than that in unburned animals, while no increase in these oxidative parameters was observed in LF-fed burned animals. Moreover, the LF diet significantly reduced hepatic lipid peroxidation, as measured by malonaldehyde concentration, compared to the other two diets. These results suggest that the administration of a LF diet in mice after a burn injury prevents inhibition of in vitro splenocyte proliferation and reduces the intensity of oxidative stress.  相似文献

The fructose analog 2,5-anhydro-D-mannitol (2,5-AM) stimulates feeding in rats by reducing ATP content in the liver. These behavioral and metabolic effects occur with rats fed a high-carbohydrate/low-fat (HC/LF) diet, but they are prevented or attenuated when the animals eat high-fat/low-carbohydrate (HF/LC) food. To examine the metabolic bases for this effect of diet, we assessed the actions of 2,5-AM on ATP content, oxygen consumption, and substrate oxidation in isolated hepatocytes from rats fed one of the two diets. Compared with cells from rats fed the HC/LF diet ("HC/LF" cells), cells from rats fed the HF/LC diet ("HF/LC" cells) had similar ATP contents but lower oxygen consumption, decreased fructose, and increased palmitate oxidation. 2,5-AM did not decrease ATP content or oxygen consumption in HF/LC cells as much as it did in HC/LF hepatocytes, and it only affected fructose and palmitate oxidation in HC/LF cells. 31P-NMR spectroscopy indicated that differences in phosphate trapping accounted for differences in depletion of ATP by 2,5-AM. These results suggest that intake of the HF/LC diet prevents the eating response and attenuates the decline in liver ATP by shifting hepatocyte metabolism to favor fat over carbohydrate as an energy-yielding substrate.  相似文献

Potential and relative potential fecundity of 701 cod Gadus morhua caught in the Bornholm Basin (ICES Sub-division 25) during 1987–1996 and 106 from the Gdansk Deep (ICES Sub-division 26) in 1995 and 1996 varied significantly between years but neither between different spawning grounds nor between different sampling months within one spawning season. Growth and water temperature are factors identified to influence the mean relative fecundity explaining 66% of the variance between years.  相似文献

This work was performed to elucidate whether growth hormone (GH)-mediated loss of adipose tissue and responses in plasma insulin and leptin are modulated by diet composition. 12-month-old rats were first fed a high-fat (HF) diet or a low-fat (LF) diet for 14 weeks. After that, GH or saline was administered to rat groups that were maintained on either HF or LF diets or that were switched from the HF to the LF diet. All 6 groups had free access to food. One additional saline group was pair-fed with the GH group that was switched from the HF to the LF diet. The caloric consumption of this latter group was also translated to yet another GH group receiving restricted amounts of the HF diet. GH was given in a total dose of 4 mg/kg/d for three weeks. After sacrifice, blood was collected and tissues were excised. In groups injected with saline, the weight of excised adipose tissue was 60 +/- 4.7, 41 +/- 3.8 and 50 +/- 4.5 g in animals that continued with the HF diet, LF diet, or that were switched from HF to LF, respectively. Corresponding figures after GH treatment were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased to 38 +/- 2.7, 30 +/- 2.3, and 31 +/- 2.7 g, respectively. Pair-feeding had no effect, whereas only 26 +/- 3.0 g of adipose tissue was retrieved in rats fed restricted amounts of HF diet while receiving GH. In this group, plasma insulin and leptin were also significantly (p < 0.05) depressed compared with other GH groups, especially to the group fed the unrestricted HF diet (203 +/- 35 vs. 1345 +/- 160 pmol/l and 9.3 +/- 1.2 vs. 31 +/- 4.4 micro g/l). In conclusion, this study shows that GH mediates breakdown of adipose tissue under a variety of dietary conditions, and that induction of hyperinsulinemia can be prevented if GH treatment is combined with restricted feeding of a diet which is relatively low in carbohydrates and rich in fat. This study imposed stress upon spawning cod Gadus morhua in the laboratory to evaluate the potential effects of trawl avoidance on their reproductive physiology and spawning behaviour. Plasma cortisol levels of stressed fish were significantly higher than controls. Stressed cod initiated fewer courtships and often performed an altered courtship sequence. Both control and stressed fish spawned and there was little difference in the production of eggs, fertilization rate, hatching success or time to starvation of larvae. However, stressed fish produced abnormal larvae more frequently. Cod exposed to a chronic stressor are able to spawn successfully, but there appears to be a negative impact of this stress on their reproductive output, particularly through the production of abnormal larvae.  相似文献

To determine whether a short-term change in dietary habits affects postprandial lipemia in men and women in the same way, postprandial triglyceridemia was measured in age- and BMI-matched young healthy men and women after two weeks on the self-selected low-fat low-cholesterol (LF) diet and after another two weeks on the self-selected high-fat high-cholesterol (HF) diet. After a standardized challenge meal (1.4 g fat/kg of body weight), men had higher postprandial triglyceridemia than women on the HF diet but no such difference was observed on the LF diet. The results of this preliminary study suggest that there may be important sex differences in the mechanisms regulating the postprandial lipemia response to different diets, women being able to adapt better to the HF diet with respect to postprandial lipemia.  相似文献

We previously reported an exaggerated endocrine and weight loss response to stress in rats fed a high-fat (HF) diet for 5 days. Others report blunted stress-induced anxiety in rats made obese on a HF diet. Experiments described here tested whether sensitivity to stress-related peptides was changed in obese and nonobese HF-fed rats. Third ventricle infusion of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in rats made obese on HF diet (40% kcal fat) produced an exaggerated hypophagia, which is thought to be mediated by CRF(2) receptors. Obese rats responded to a lower dose of CRF for a longer time than rats fed a low-fat (LF) diet (12% kcal fat). CRF-induced release of corticosterone, which is thought to be mediated by CRF(1) receptors, was not exaggerated in obese HF-fed rats. In contrast, rats fed HF diet for 5 days showed the same food intake and corticosterone response to CRF as LF-fed rats. CRF mRNA expression in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus was stimulated by mild stress (ip saline injection and placement in a novel cage) in LF-fed rats but not in rats fed HF diet for 5 days because of a nonsignificant increase in expression in nonstressed HF-fed rats. In addition, nonstressed levels of urocortin (UCN) I mRNA expression in the Edinger-Westphal nucleus were significantly inhibited in HF-fed rats. These data suggest that rats that have become obese on a HF diet show a change in responsiveness to stress peptides, whereas the increased stress response in nonobese HF-fed rats may be associated with changes in basal CRF and UCN I mRNA expression.  相似文献

Fatty liver is prevalent in apolipoprotein B (apoB)-defective familial hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL). Similar to humans, mouse models of FHBL produced by gene targeting (apob(+/38.9)) manifest low plasma cholesterol and increased hepatic triglycerides (TG) even on a chow diet due to impaired hepatic VLDL-TG secretive capacity. Because apoB truncations shorter than apoB48 are expressed in the intestine, we examined whether FHBL mice may have limited capacity for intestinal dietary TG absorption. In addition, we investigated whether FHBL mice are more susceptible to diet-induced hepatic TG accumulation. Fat absorption capacity was impaired in apoB38.9 mice in a gene dose-dependent manner. Relative fractional fat absorption coefficients for apob(+/+), apob(+/38.9), and apob(38.9/38.9) were 1.00, 0.96, and 0.71, respectively. To raise hepatic TG, we fed high-fat (HF) and low-fat (LF) pellets. Hepatic TG level was observed in rank order: HF > LF > chow. On both LF and HF, liver TG level was higher in the apob(+/38.9) than in apob(+/+). Hepatic TG secretion remained impaired in the apob(+/38.9) on the HF diet. Thus the FHBL mice are more susceptible to diet-induced fatty liver despite relatively reduced intestinal TG absorption capacity on a HF diet.  相似文献

Perinatal maternal high-fat consumption is known to increase the obesity and type 2 diabetes susceptibility and to impair exercise performance in the offspring. We hypothesize that epigenetic modifications in the skeletal muscle are partly responsible for this phenotype. To detect skeletal muscle genes affected by maternal nutrition, male offspring of low-fat (LF) and high-fat (HF) diet fed dams (BL6 mice) received LF diet upon weaning and were sacrificed at 6 or 25 weeks of age. Gene expression of Musculus quadriceps was investigated by microarray analysis revealing an up-regulation of the nuclear receptor Nr4a1 by maternal HF feeding. This was accompanied by promoter hypomethylation of CpG-1408 which correlated with increased Nr4a1 gene expression at both ages. Offspring voluntary exercise training (by supplying running wheels from 7 to 25 weeks of age) normalized Nr4a1 methylation and gene expression respectively, and ameliorated the negative effects of maternal HF feeding on insulin sensitivity. Overall, Nr4a1 gene expression in skeletal muscle correlated with higher insulin levels during an oral glucose tolerance test and could, therefore, be involved in programming type 2 diabetes susceptibility in offspring exposed to perinatal high fat diet.  相似文献

Mice adapted to a high-fat diet are reported to be leptin resistant; however, we previously reported that mice fed a high-fat (HF) diet and housed at 23 degrees C remained sensitive to peripheral leptin and specifically lost body fat. This study tested whether leptin action was impaired by a combination of elevated environmental temperature and a HF diet. Male C57BL/6 mice were adapted to low-fat (LF) or HF diet from 10 days of age and were housed at 27 degrees C from 28 days of age. From 35 days of age, baseline food intake and body weight were recorded for 1 wk and then mice on each diet were infused with 10 microg leptin/day or PBS from an intraperitoneal miniosmotic pump for 13 days. HF-fed mice had a higher energy intake than LF-fed mice and were heavier but not fatter. Serum leptin was lower in PBS-infused HF- than LF-fed mice. Leptin significantly inhibited energy intake of both LF-fed and HF-fed mice, and this was associated with a significant increase in hypothalamic long-form leptin receptors with no change in short-form leptin receptor or brown fat uncoupling protein-1 mRNA expression. Leptin significantly inhibited weight gain in both LF- and HF-fed mice but reduced the percentage of body fat mass only in LF-fed mice. The percentage of lean and fat tissue in HF-fed mice did not change, implying that overall growth had been inhibited. These results suggest that dietary fat modifies the mechanisms responsible for leptin-induced changes in body fat content and that those in HF-fed mice are sensitive to environmental temperature.  相似文献

Apolipoprotein A-IV (apo A-IV) is an anorectic protein produced in the intestine and brain that has been proposed as a satiety signal. To determine whether diet-induced obesity alters apo A-IV gene expression in the intestine and hypothalamus, rats were fed a high-fat (HF), low-fat (LF), or standard chow (CHOW) diet for 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 wk. Rats fed the HF diet had significantly greater body weights than rats given the LF and CHOW diets. Intestinal and plasma apo A-IV levels were comparable across dietary groups and time. LF and CHOW rats had comparable hypothalamic apo A-IV mRNA across the course of the experiment. However, HF rats had a slow and progressive diminution in hypothalamic apo A-IV mRNA over time that became significantly lower than that of LF or CHOW rats by 10 wk. Intragastric infusion of lipid emulsion to animals that were fasted overnight significantly stimulated hypothalamic apo A-IV mRNA in LF and CHOW rats but had no effect in HF rats. These results demonstrate that chronic consumption of a HF diet significantly reduces apo A-IV mRNA levels and the response of apo A-IV gene expression to dietary lipids in the hypothalamus. This raises the possibility that dysregulation of hypothalamic apo A-IV could contribute to diet-induced obesity.  相似文献

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease in Western countries, and the gut-liver axis is implicated in liver disease pathogenesis. We hypothesize that advanced liver steatosis accompanies an increase in hepatic inflammation, colonic secondary bile acids (BAs) and secondary BA-producing bacteria in mice fed a high-fat (HF) diet model of obesity. Four-week old male C57BL/6 mice were fed an HF (45% energy) or a low-fat (LF) (10% energy) diet for 21 weeks. At the end of the study, body weight and body fat percentage in the HF group were 0.23- and 0.41-fold greater than those in the LF group, respectively. Similarly, the HF group exhibited an increase in hepatic lipid droplets, inflammatory cell infiltration, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and hepatocellular ballooning (but without hepatic Mallory bodies) which are key histological features of advanced hepatic steatosis. Furthermore, RNA sequencing, qPCR and immunohistological methods found that nicotinamide n-methyltransferase and selenoprotein P, two inflammation-related hepatic genes, were upregulated in the HF group. Consistent with the hepatic inflammation, the levels of proinflammatory plasma-cytokines (TNF-α and IL6), colonic secondary BAs (LCA, DCA) and secondary BA producing bacteria (e.g., lactobacillaceae/Lachnospiraceae) were at least 0.5-fold greater in the HF group compared with the LF group. Taken together, the data demonstrate that advanced liver-steatosis is concurrent with an elevated level of hepatic inflammation, colonic secondary bile acids and their associated bacteria in mice fed an HF diet. These data suggest a potential gut-liver crosstalk at the stage of advanced liver-steatosis.  相似文献

It has been suggested that high-fat (HF) diet exaggerates the stress-induced release of glucocorticoids due to activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In an initial experiment, in which rats were fed HF diet for 4 days, we found that HF-fed controls stopped gaining weight, indicating that they were hyperresponsive to the mild stress of tail bleeding but responded the same as low-fat (LF)-fed rats to the more severe stress of restraint. A second experiment confirmed these results when rats fed a HF diet for 4 days showed an exaggerated corticosterone release in response to an intraperitoneal injection of saline and movement to a novel cage, compared with LF-fed rats. Experiment 3 tested the same parameters as experiment 2 but interchanged the diets. This allowed us to differentiate between the effects of the dietary fat and the novelty of the diet. Additionally, this experiment determined whether hyperresponsiveness to mild stress in HF-fed rats was sustained during a prolonged exposure to diet. The results confirmed that a HF diet, not novelty, exaggerated the endocrine stress response after 9 days on the diet but that the effect was no longer present after 23 days on the diet. The hyperresponsiveness of the HPA axis in HF-fed rats is similar to that observed in animals that have been exposed to a significant chronic or acute stress, suggesting that the HF diet may initially be perceived as a stressor.  相似文献

Notwithstanding the fact that dietary branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) have been considered to be a cause of insulin resistance (IR), evidence indicates that BCAA-rich whey proteins (WPs) do not lead to IR in animals consuming high-fat (HF) diets and may instead improve glucose homeostasis. To address the role of BCAA-rich WP as dietary protein in IR and inflammatory response, we fed C57BL/6J mice either high-fat (HF) or low-fat (LF) diets formulated with moderate protein levels (13% w/w) of either WP or hydrolyzed WP (WPH) and compared them with casein (CAS) as a reference. The muscle and plasma free amino acid profiles, inflammatory parameters and glycemic homeostasis were examined. While the LF/CAS diet promoted the rise in triglycerides and inflammatory parameters, the HF/CAS induced typical IR responses and impaired biochemical parameters. No differences in plasma BCAAs were detected, but the HF/WPH diet led to a twofold increase in gastrocnemius muscle free amino acids, including BCAAs. In general, ingestion of WPH was effective at averting or attenuating the damage caused by both the LF and HF diets. No high concentrations of BCAAs in the plasma or signs of IR were found in those mice fed an HF diet along with the hydrolyzed whey proteins. It is concluded that consumption of BCAA-rich whey proteins, especially WPH, does not result in the development of IR.  相似文献

The current experiments were designed to compare the feeding response to enterostatin and beta-casomorphin(1-7) injected intragastrically. Sprague-Dawley rats with a gastric cannula were allowed to chose from high-fat diet (HF) or low-fat diet (LF) in separate jars. Enterostatin injected intragastrically into overnight fasted rats caused a U-shaped dose-dependent reduction in the intake of the HF diet for the first two hours after infusion but had no effect on the LF intake. beta-Casomorphin(1-7) stimulated the intake of the HF diet but had no effect on the LF diet. Finally, beta-casomorphin(1-7) blocked the inhibitory effect of enterostatin on HF intake in fasted rats.  相似文献

Fat-rich diets not only induce obesity in humans but also make animals obese. Therefore, animals that accumulate body fat in response to a high-fat diet (especially rodents) are commonly used in obesity research. The effect of dietary fat on body fat accumulation is not fully understood in zebrafish, an excellent model of vertebrate lipid metabolism. Here, we explored the effects of dietary fat and green tea extract, which has anti-obesity properties, on body fat accumulation in zebrafish. Adult zebrafish were allocated to four diet groups and over 6 weeks were fed a high-fat diet containing basal diet plus two types of fat or a low-fat diet containing basal diet plus carbohydrate or protein. Another group of adult zebrafish was fed a high-fat diet with or without 5% green tea extract supplementation. Zebrafish fed the high-fat diets had nearly twice the body fat (visceral, subcutaneous, and total fat) volume and body fat volume ratio (body fat volume/body weight) of those fed low-fat diets. There were no differences in body fat accumulation between the two high-fat groups, nor were there any differences between the two low-fat groups. Adding green tea extract to the high-fat diet significantly suppressed body weight, body fat volume, and body fat volume ratio compared with the same diet lacking green tea extract. 3-Hydroxyacyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase and citrate synthase activity in the liver and skeletal muscle were significantly higher in fish fed the diet supplemented with green tea extract than in those fed the unsupplemented diet. Our results suggest that a diet rich in fat, instead of protein or carbohydrate, induced body fat accumulation in zebrafish with mechanisms that might be similar to those in mammals. Consequently, zebrafish might serve as a good animal model for research into obesity induced by high-fat diets.  相似文献
