SUMMARY 1. False crane fly larvae, Ptychoptera townesi (Diptera), occurred in high densities in a flow-controlled section of stream where fine particulate organic matter (FPOM; 0.45 μm to 1 mm in diameter) had accumulated, but were quite rare both upstream and downstream from the section.
2. In laboratory studies, P. townesi grew only on FPOM less than 250 μm. Larvae consistently grew fastest when fed small particles (0.45–53 μm in diameter).
3. Ptychoptera townesi consumed relatively small amounts (0.002 mg per mg animal dry mass day−1) of FPOM (0.45–53 μm). They had long gut content passage times (greater than 19 h) and relatively high efficiencies of conversion of ingested food to body substance (20.7%). Gut content passage times were variable, and depended partially on the nature of the substrate.
4. False crane fly larvae compacted FPOM into faecal pellets considerably larger in size than particles ingested. They lost mass when allowed to feed on their own faecal material, as well as on faeces greater than 250 μm in diameter produced by shredders. However, they survived and grew on shredder faeces (53–500 μm in diameter) that contained a mixture of smaller particles and particles too large for ingestion.
5. The overall pattern of resource utilization by P. townes involved slow handling of relatively small volumes of food, which probably passed once only through a complex alimentary tract.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The sulphate reduction capacity of six shallow soft water sediments, differing in pH and organic matter content, was studied under controlled pH adjustments ranging from pH 3 to pH 8.
2. In the acid sediments, relatively rich in organic matter, the sulphate reduction capacity reached values of 0.09-0.12 μmol g−1 d−1. In the circumneutral mineral sediments the values ranged between 0.04 and 0.08 μmol g−1 d−1.
3. The latter group of sediments was very sensitive to the effects of experimental acidification as sulphate reduction was almost fully inhibited when pH decreased from 7 to 5. In the acid sediments inhibition occurred at lower pH values, in the range pH 5 to pH 3.
4. Sulphate reduction governed the production of free sulphides, whereas putrefaction processes were only of minor importance. It is suggested that in acid sediments, relatively rich in organic matter, the sulphate reducing bacterial population is less sensitive to acidification than in circumneutral mineral sediments.
5. The presence of organic matter appeared to be important in counteracting the inhibiting effects of acidification on sulphate reduction. This is important for the in situ sulphate reduction in sediments of soft waters which become enriched with organic matter during the long-term process of acidification.  相似文献

Coprophagy: a supplementary food source for two freshwater gastropods?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. The freshwater pulmonate snail Radix peregra voluntarily and regularly fed on its faeces, whereas Bithynia tentaculata (Prosobranchia) did not.
2. With high-quality faeces as food (faeces with C : N-values below ten) Radix could grow and survived for 11 weeks. Growth was 24–30% of that achieved with control food (lettuce, Chlamydomonas and Tetramin), and body mass was close to the expected value.
3. As with real food, the percentage organic content of faeces was reduced during gut passage, with the exception of very low-quality faeces.
4. Faeces contained living cells of green algae ( Chlamydomonas reinhardii ) and diatoms ( Achnanthes lanceolata, Eunotia pectinalis ), which survived the gut passage of R. peregra and B. tentaculata . Faecal material was also rich in bacteria, with up to 150 × 106 cells mg–1 dry mass. Bacteria increased in abundance in faeces which had been evacuated for 7 days or more.
5. A further degradation of partly digested food in the faeces was indicated by the activity of the extracellular digestive enzymes cellobiase and chitobiase. These enzymes hydrolysed material with an activity of 0.2–14.5 pkat mg–1 faecal dry mass in 1–12-day-old faeces. In faeces of Bithynia fed control food or incubated sycamore leaves, chitobiase activity was correlated with bacterial abundance.
6. Coprophagy is considered to be a suitable strategy for further degradation and utilization of refractory material for which one gut passage is too short and/or too inefficient.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Population dynamics (density, biomass, annual production), gut contents and feeding rates of mayflies ( Deleatidium spp.; Leptophlebiidae) were compared in two naturally acid (mean pH≃4.8). brownwater streams and two alkaline (mean pH 7.5), clearwater streams in South Westland, New Zealand.
2. Mean densities of larvae (range 234–2318 m−2) were higher in alkaline streams on most of the six bimonthly sampling dates. Mean biomass (range 0.020–0.376 g larval dry weight (LDW) m−2) was always highest at the stable, spring-fed, alkaline site and was lower at the acid sites and another alkaline site where the population was always dominated by small larvae.
3. Annual production was high at the more stable, alkaline site (10.35 gLDW m−2) but much lower at the other sites (2.49–3.77 g m−2).
4. Gut contents of larvae were dominated by fine (45–75 μm widest diameter) paniculate matter (69–99%), diatoms (up to 21%) and. at one site, filamentous algae (8–13%).
5. Grazing rates of mayflies on epilithon were significantly higher on stones taken from acid than alkaline streams and material grazed from the former contained a higher proportion of inorganic material (87–93% and 61–83% inorganics, respectively).
6. Higher grazing rates may reflect lower quality of epilithic food in acid, brownwater streams, a factor that could contribute to the lower productivity of Deleatidium populations at these sites.  相似文献

1. A survey was made of denitrification and nitrous oxide (N2O) production in river sediments at fifty sites in north‐east England during one season in order to investigate the relationship between rates and environmental factors likely to influence these processes. The sites were chosen to represent a wide range of physical and chemical conditions. Denitrification rate and N2O production were measured within 5 h of sampling using the slurry acetylene blockage technique.
2. Denitrification rate ranged from less than 0.005–260 nmol N g–1 DW h–1, tending to increase in a downstream direction. N2O production ranged from negative values (net consumption) to 13 nmol N2O‐N g–1 DW h–1 and accounted for 0–115% of the N gases produced.
3. Denitrification rate and N2O concentration in the sediment were correlated positively with nitrate concentration in the water column, water content of the sediment and percentage of fine (< 100 μm) particles in the sediment.
4. The variation in denitrification rate was satisfactorily explained (64% total variance) by a model employing measurements of water nitrate and water content of sediments. No simple or multiple relationship was found for N2O production.  相似文献

1. We investigated the growth of the detritivore-shredder Sericostoma personatum by feeding groups of larvae on a fresh macrophyte, Potamogeton perfoliatus , conditioned sitka spruce needles, Picea sitchensis , conditioned alder leaves, Alnus glutinosa , conditioned ash leaves, Fraxinus excelsior , and a fresh filamentous green alga, Microspora sp. A sixth treatment group of larvae was fasted.
2. The nitrogen content of the food items ranged from 1.4% dry weight (DW) for Picea needles to 4.4% DW for Microspora filaments. Consumption of the various food items by Sericostoma differed significantly, being highest for Picea , and lowest for Potamogeton and Microspora .
3. The instantaneous growth rate ranged from −1.3% DW day−1 in the fasting group to 0.75% DW day−1 in the Alnus group. The growth rate of larvae fed on Alnus , Fraxinus and Microspora was similar, and significantly higher than that of the other three groups. An increase in the size of larval cases followed the same pattern as larval growth, although with less variation between food items.
4. Larvae fed on Microspora exhibited the greatest increase in fat content, while that of the larvae fed on Picea and those in the fasting group decreased. The gross growth efficiency (G/I%) of Sericostoma (larva + case) ranged from 2% when fed on Picea to 34% when fed on Microspora . Consumption was significantly correlated with the nutrient content of food items, whereas G/I% and growth rate were only weakly related to food quality.
5. The growth of Sericostoma varies with diet and the food items sustaining highest growth rate are not necessarily the 'typical' shredder food resources.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The sedimentary distribution of chlorophylls, carotenoids and their breakdown products following the winter-spring bloom of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense in Lake Kinneret was determined both spatially and vertically within the sediments, using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC).
2. All four stations (epilimnic, oxic St. J (depth = 8m) and D (12m) and hypolimnic, anoxic St. F (21 m) A (41 m) were characterized by the presence of chlorophyll a (chl-a) chl- b , chl- c , phaeophytins a (ph'tin- a ) and b , phaeophorbide a (ph'bide- a ) and lutein, fucoxanthin, diatoxanthin and β-carotene together with spectrally similar, but HPLC-resolved, breakdown products in the surface sediments. The central deep station A (41 m), which is seasonally anoxic, trapped and preserved significantly more pigments (e.g. chl- a = 16.35 μg g−1 organic matter) than the more erosive, oxic littoral stations (chl- a = 1.10 and 0.76μg g−l OM at St. D and J, respectively).
3. Whereas it was possible to ascribe the presence of lutein and chl- b to inputs of green algae and higher plants from the catchment, and fucoxanthin and chl- c 1, c 2 to winter diatom blooms (e.g. Melosira granulata ), there was a remarkable absence of peridinin and dinoxanthin from sediments, despite the dominance of dinoflagellates in the phytobiomass. This is consistent with the well-known oxic lability of this epoxy carotenoid in aquatic systems, and indicates efficient breakdown of this dinoflagellate organic matter in the water column, prior to sedimentation.
4. Although pigment concentrations all decreased with depths within sediments, lutein and β-carotene were selectively preserved compared to chl-a and fucoxanthin which, at 40m depth at St. A, decreased to < 1% of their surface concentrations.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Inputs, movements and exchanges of particulate organic matter were measured on two contrasting floodplains of the Ogeechee River, Georgia, U.S.A. A model, which incorporated measurements of standing crop, respiration, litterfall, inundation, and litter processing rates, was used to estimate annual exchanges of organic matter between the river and floodplains.
2. Annual litterfall was higher on the East floodplain than on the lower elevation West floodplain (902 v. 784 g ash-free-dry-mass [AFDM] m−2).
3. Experiments with tagged leaves and sticks demonstrated that litter was readily displaced during floods. The distance and direction of displacement varied within and between floodplains but tended to be higher closer to the river and was generally parallel to the river.
4. The model indicated that both floodplains lost organic matter to the river. The lower elevation floodplain (East) lost more organic matter to the river (208 g AFDM m−2 year−1) than did the higher elevation (West) floodplain (79g AFDM m−2 year−1).
5. Inputs of organic matter from the floodplain to the river exceeded the amount of litterfall typically entering heavily forested high gradient headwater streams (5.5 v. 0.4-0.6 kg AFDM m−2 year−1).
6. Floodplain organic matter inputs may exert a greater influence upon structure and function within these streams than do upstream inputs or primary production. Consequently, current conceptualizations of stream structure and function need to be modified to account for the effects of floodplain inputs on stream channel processes within large, low-gradient rivers.  相似文献

1. Sediment and nutrient loading in freshwater systems are leading causes of aquatic habitat degradation globally. We investigated the impacts of fine-sediment and nutrient additions on the growth and survival of western toad ( Bufo boreas ) tadpoles and emergent metamorphs in mesocosm and exclosure experiments.
2. Mesocosm tanks received weekly pulses of fine sediments to create initial concentrations of 0, 130 and 260 mg L−1 of suspended sediment and either bi-weekly additions of nutrients (N = 160 μg L−1, P = 10 μg L−1) or no additions in a factorial design. Within mesocosms, tadpole exclosures allowed for quantification of tadpole grazing pressure on periphyton biomass, chlorophyll- a and sediment deposition.
3. Tadpoles receiving sediment additions experienced slower growth rates and reduced survival to metamorphosis, although no effects of treatment were detected on size at metamorphosis or time to metamorphosis. Nutrient additions also lowered survival, but had no impact on other measured parameters of tadpole fitness. Dissections and gut content analysis revealed that tadpoles ingested sediment in large quantities altering the proportion of the organic content of ingested food.
4. Together these results suggest that although sediment was readily consumed by tadpoles, its presence in the larval environment had an overall negative effect on tadpole growth and survival, although not as severe as predicted.  相似文献

Abstract: The leucine incorporation technique was evaluated and optimised for measuring bacterial production in stream-bed sediments. The original procedure was modified in order to obtain reliable production estimates in this habitat. This included the use of higher leucine concentrations (50 μmol l−1) for obtaining substrate saturation, and an enhanced protein extraction procedure after sample fixation. The leucine method was combined with a perfused core technique. Water containing 14C-labelled leucine was perfused up through sediment cores, enabling the measurement of bacterial production in an experimental situation resembling natural conditions in the stream bed. Bacterial production in the Breitenbach, a small upland stream in Central Germany, showed a high degree of spatial variability in the sandy stream bed. It was related closely to sediment organic matter content, whereas varying perfusion rates had less influence. Annual bacterial production was estimated at about 200 g C m−2, demonstrating the potential for bacteria to act as a food resource for benthic fauna in this stream.  相似文献

Polyclonal antisera made in rabbits against whole washed cells of Vibrio pelagius and Aeromonas caviae were used for detection of these bacterial species in the rearing water and gastrointestinal tract of healthy turbot ( Scophthalmus maximus ) larvae exposed to V. pelagius and/or Aer. caviae . The results demonstrated that this method is suitable for detection of V. pelagius and Aer. caviae in water samples and larvae at population levels higher than 103 ml−1 and 103 larva−1. Populations of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria present in the gastrointestinal tract of turbot larvae, estimated using the dilution plate technique, increased from approximately 4 × 102 bacteria larva−1 on day 3 post-hatching to approximately 105 bacteria fish−1 16 days post-hatching. Sixteen days after hatching, Vibrio spp. accounted for approximately 3 × 104 cfu larva−1 exposed to V. pelagius on days 2, 5 and 8 post-hatching. However, only 103 of the Vibrio spp. belonged to V. pelagius . When larvae were exposed to Aer. caviae on day 2 post-hatching, the gut microbiota of 5-day old larvae was mainly colonized by Aeromonas spp. (104 larva−1), of which 9 × 103 belonged to Aer. caviae . Later in the experiment, at the time when high mortality occurred, 9 × 105 Aer. caviae were detected. Introduction of V. pelagius to the rearing water seemed to improve larval survival compared with fish exposed to Aer. caviae and with the control group. It was therefore concluded that it is beneficial with regard to larval survival to introduce bacteria ( V. pelagius ) to the rearing water.  相似文献

1. Traps for litterfall and for lateral transport of organic matter were sampled over a 1-year period along longitudinal and lateral transects in a glacial stream system (Val Roseg, Swiss Alps), which is characterized by single-thread reaches and a large subalpine floodplain.
2. Allochthonous inputs to the glacier stream were low close to the glacier terminus but increased as woody riparian vegetation and forests develop. Annual inputs varied from 0.4 g ash free dry matter (AFDM) m–2 year–1 (direct input) and 0.7 g AFDM m–2 year–1 (lateral input) in the proglacial area to 23.0 g AFDM m–2 year–1 (direct input) and 10.7 g AFDM m–2 year–1 (lateral input) in the lowest reach with adjacent subalpine forests.
3. Direct inputs of organic matter decreased exponentially from forests at the floodplain edge to the floodplain centre, while lateral inputs of organic matter correlated linearly with distance to trees. Direct litterfall dominated litter input close to the forest, while lateral transport was the major pathway for channels more than 20 m away from the forest.
4. A conceptual framework is developed illustrating the influence of terrestrial vegetation and fluvial morphology on organic matter input along the continuum of glacial streams.  相似文献

1. The extent of spatial and temporal variation of microbial respiration was determined in a first-order, sand-bottomed, blackwater stream on the coastal plain of south-eastern Virginia, U.S.A.
2. Annual mean respiration rates (as g O2 m–3 h–1) differed significantly among substrata: leaf litter, 12.9; woody debris, 2.4; surface sediment, 0.8; hyporheic sediment, 0.4; water column, 0.003. Rates associated with wood were higher than those with leaves when expressed per unit surface area.
3. Highest respiration rates on leaves, wood and in the water column occurred during the summer, whereas rates in the sediments were greatest during the late autumn and winter. Water temperature, as well as particulate organic matter and nitrogen content of the substrata, was correlated positively with respiration rates.
4. A stepwise multiple regression showed that temperature and nitrogen content together explained 88% of the variation in respiration rates of leaves and wood. In contrast, particulate organic matter content and nitrogen content explained 89–90% of the variation in respiration in the sediments. Although water temperature was a significant factor in the sediment multiple regressions, its addition as an independent variable improved the regression models only slightly.
5. Annual mean respiration in the stream channel, based on the proportional amount of respiration occurring associated with each type of substratum during each month, was 1.1 kg O2 m–2 yr–1. Seventy per cent of respiration in the stream occurred in the hyporheic zone, 8–13% occurred in the surface sediment, leaf litter or woody debris, and < 1% occurred in the water column. Approximately 16% of total detritus, or 40% of non-woody detritus, stored in the stream during the year was lost to microbial respiration.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We measured biomass and light/dark bottle productivity of macrophytes in a Wisconsin stream throughout one growing season. Except for a brief period in early spring when a Cladophora glomerata -filamentous algal community was dominant, Potamogeton pectinatus was the dominant macrophyte species in Badfish Creek.
2. Maximum community biomass was 710 g DW m−2, with a maximum above ground biomass of 620 g DW m−2 and a maximum below ground biomass of 120 g DW m−2. Annual productivity was estimated at 1435 g DW m−2 year−1, with a calculated P/B of 2.01.
3. In situ net production averaged 2.83g C g AFDW−1 h−1 Net positive carbon gain by the P. pectinatus community occurred when water temperatures were above 15°C, and daylength at least 12h. This is correlated to the onset of tuber germination in spring, and the point of maximal biomass decline in autumn.  相似文献

Life cycle, survival and production of the univoltine midge Ptychoptera paludosa whose larvae live in fine sandy sediments were studied in a German stream (1989–1990). Growth of the 4th larval instar was linear. Adults emerge from May, for ca 8 weeks (1985–1990); emergence was 0.56 g dry weight m–2 lentic area (1990). Density decreased strongly only when larvae were young; except after an exceptional spate, numbers emerging were independent of discharge. Larval survival was ca 9%; only 10% of the potential offspring of the survivors actually appeared in the next generation. Secondary production (P) was 2.3 g ash free dry weight (AFDW) m–2y–1, mean biomass (B) was 0.6 g AFDW m–2, i.e., the P/B ratio was 3.8.  相似文献

1.  1. It has been accepted that aquatic hyphomycetes colonising submerged leaves increase the nutritional value of leaf detritus and suggested that fungal biomass plays a greater role in the growth of shredders than leaf tissue itself. However, it is not clear what proportion of the nutritional needs of shredders is met by fungal biomass.
2.  We fed Pycnopsyche gentilis larvae with tulip poplar ( Liriodendron tulipifera ) leaf discs colonised by the aquatic hyphomycete, Anguillospora filiformis , which had been radiolabelled to quantify the contribution of fungal carbon to the growth of the shredder at different larval developmental stages. Instantaneous growth rates of larvae on this diet were also estimated.
3.  When provided with fungal-colonised leaves (14–16% fungal biomass), the third and the fifth instar larvae of P. gentilis grew at the rates of 0.061 and 0.034 day−1, respectively, but on a diet of sterile leaves, both larval instars lost weight. The incorporation rates of fungal carbon were 31.6 μg C mg−1 AFDM day−1, accounting for 100% of the daily growth rate of the third instar larvae and 8.6 μg C mg−1 AFDM day−1, accounting for 50% of the daily growth rate of the fifth instar larvae.
4.  These results suggest that leaf material colonised by A. filiformis is a high quality food resource for P. gentilis larvae, and that fungal biomass can contribute significantly to the growth of these larvae. Differences in feeding behaviour and digestive physiology may explain the significantly greater assimilation of fungal biomass by the earlier instar than the final instar. To satisfy their nutritional needs the fifth instar larvae would have to assimilate detrital mass that may have been modified by fungal exoenzymes.  相似文献

1. Substratum selection by the burrowing larvae of the dragonfly Onychogomphus uncatus was examined in an artificial laboratory stream at different larval densities and in the presence of one of three other dragonfly species.
2. The larvae of O. uncatus , as well as those of the other species, clearly preferred gravelly sand substratum rather than gravel or stone.
3. At low larval density (71.4 m–2) in the stream, 83% of the O. uncatus were found in gravelly sand. An increase of larval abundance in the stream to 202.4 specimens m–2 resulted in greater density in all substrata, but this increase was proportionally lowest in gravelly sand.
4. The presence of a second species had various effects on the microdistribution of O. uncatus . In the presence of Gomphus simillimus or Cordulegaster boltonii immaculifrons the distribution of O. uncatus changed significantly; their density increased in the normally less preferred substrata. This effect is interpreted as asymmetric interspecific interference. The presence of a third species, Onychogomphus forcipatus unguiculatus , had no effects.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was measured at 8h intervals over a 1 year period in a stream draining 51 ha of moorland with peaty soils.
2. DOM concentrations increased with increasing stream discharge from low flow values of 0–3 mg 1−1 to maximum values of 30 mg 1−1. There were also seasonal differences of up to 13mgl−1 between August (maximum) and February, and differences of about 2.5 mg l−1 between rising and falling stage samples.
3. Seasonal variation was closely related to mean temperature.
4. Total loss over the year was 168 kg ha−1 DOM (84 kg ha−1 C), larger than previous estimates for upland sites.  相似文献
