In order to investigate the photoprotective function of photorespiration in grapevine under water stress, potted grapevines (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) were randomly divided into three uniform groups for well-watered [watered every morning to keep the relative water content (RWC) of soil over 70 %], water-stress adapted (drought-adapted at 30 % relative soil water content for 30 days), and water stress without adaptation treatment (water-stressed to 30 % relative soil water content for 3 days). Net assimilation rate (A N), stomatal conductance (g s), substomatal CO2 concentration (C i), transpiration rate (E), actual photochemical efficiency of PSII (ΦPSII), and maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) were recorded by combining measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence. Gross photorespiration (Pr), photosynthetic electron partitioning (JC/JT), photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) were also calculated. The ratio of net assimilation rate to transpiration rate (A N/E) was used as an indicator of water use efficiency (WUE). A N, apparent Pr, ΦPSII, Fv/Fm, qp, and g s decreased, NPQ increased, and gross Pr sustained at a high level under water stress. This suggests that both photorespiration and energy dissipation play important roles in protecting photosynthetic apparatus against photoinhibition. C i in water-stressed plants without adaptation treatment increased, which indicates the leaves suffered a non-stomatal limitation, while the water-stress adaped plants only suffered a stomatal limitation indicated by low C i.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to test whether Ca2+, a second messenger in stress response, is involved in ABA-induced antioxidant enzyme activities in Stylosanthes guianensis. Plants were sprayed with abscisic acid (ABA), calcium channel blocker, LaCl3, calcium chelator, ethylene glycol-bis(β-amino ethyl ether)-N,N,N′, N′-tetraacetid acid (EGTA), and ABA in combination with LaCl3 or EGTA. Their effects on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities and chilling resistance were compared. The results showed that ABA decreased electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation but increased maximum photochemical efficiency measured as variable to maximum fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm) under chilling stress. Treatment with LaCl3 or EGTA alone and in combination with ABA increased electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation, decreased Fv/Fm, suggesting that the block in Ca2+ signalling decreased chilling resistance of S. guianensis and the ABA-enhanced chilling resistance. ABA-induced SOD and APX activities were suppressed by LaCl3 or EGTA. The results suggested that Ca2+ is involved in the ABA-enhanced chilling resistance and the ABA-induced SOD and APX activities in S. guianensis.  相似文献

Environmental factors that induce spatial heterogeneity of stomatal conductance, g s, called stomatal patchiness, also reduce the photochemical capacity of CO2 fixation, yet current methods cannot distinguish between the relative effect of stomatal patchiness and biochemical limitations on photosynthetic capacity. We evaluate effects of stomatal patchiness and the biochemical capacity of CO2 fixation on the sensitivity of net photosynthetic rate (P N) to stomatal conductance (g s), θ (θ = δP N/g s). A qualitative model shows that stomatal patchiness increases the sensitivity θ while reduced biochemical capacity of CO2 fixation lowers θ. We used this feature to distinguish between stomatal patchiness and mesophyll impairments in the photochemistry of CO2 fixation. We compared gas exchange of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plants grown in a growth chamber and fed abscisic acid, ABA (10−5 M), for 10 d with control plants (-ABA). P N and g s oscillated more frequently in ABA-treated than in control plants when the leaves were placed into the leaf chamber and exposed to a dry atmosphere. When compared with the initial CO2 response measured at the beginning of the treatment (day zero), both ABA and control leaves showed reduced P N at particular sub-stomatal CO2 concentration (c i) during the oscillations. A lower reduction of P N at particular g s indicated overestimation of c i due to stomatal patchiness and/or omitted cuticular conductance, g c. The initial period of damp oscillation was characterised by inhibition of chloroplast processes while stomatal patchiness prevailed at the steady state of gas exchange. The sensitivity θ remained at the original pre-treatment values at high g s in both ABA and control plants. At low g s, θ decreased in ABA-treated plants indicating an ABA-induced impairment of chloroplast processes. In control plants, g c neglected in the calculation of g s was the likely reason for apparent depression of photosynthesis at low g s. This study characterized morphological and physiological responses of two Malus species to exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) application under both well-watered and drought-stressed conditions. Exogenous ABA was sprayed onto the leaves of potted 1-year-old seedlings of M. sieversii and M. hupehensis, originated from regions with low annual rainfall and high annual rainfall, respectively. The results demonstrated that exogenous ABA application significantly decreased height growth (H), total biomass (TB), total leaf area (LA), net photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (g s), and significantly increased root/shoot ratio (RS), specific leaf area (SLA), endogenous ABA concentration, water use efficiency (WUE) and carbon isotope composition (δ13C) under both well-watered and drought-stressed conditions. However, distinct interspecific differences were found in ABA-induced morphological and physiological responses. Compared with M. hupehensis, M. sieversii was more responsive to exogenous ABA application, resulting in larger decreases in H, LA, A and g s, and larger increases in RS, SLA, WUEL, WUEi, ABA and δ13C. These results suggest strong evidence for different maintenance of fitness under stressful conditions between species of Malus. In addition, application of exogenous ABA appears to enhance the tolerance of two Malus species to drought-stress.  相似文献

The effects of chilling (CT, day/night temperatures of 12/10 °C, an irradiance of 250 μmol m?2 s?1), chilling combined with a low irradiance (CL, 12/10 °C, 80 μmol m?2 s?1), and a high temperature (HT, 42/40 °C, 250 μmol m?2 s?1) on chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, and gas exchange were studied in two watermelon cultivars, ZJ8424 and YS01, differing in their resistance. The chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) decreased substantially, whereas the intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) increased when the two watermelon cultivars were grown under these stresses. The photosynthetic parameters showed greater changes at chilling than at the high temperature, and the CL caused a more pronounced inhibition in PN compared with the CT. After 2 d exposure to the CT, YS01 had higher PN, gs, and E, but a lower ci compared with ZJ8424. The maximum efficiency of photosystem (PS) II photochemistry (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PS II photochemistry (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching (qP), and electron transport rate (ETR) decreased under the CT and CL but showed only a slight drop under the HT. All these stresses significantly increased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). The CT brought more damage to the photosynthetic apparatus of leaves compared with the CL. In addition, after returning to normal conditions (25/15 °C, 250 μmol m?2 s?1) for 3 d, the photosynthetic parameters recovered to pre-stress levels in HT treated seedlings but not in CT treated seedlings. In conclusion, the low irradiance could help to alleviate the extent of photoinhibition of PS II photochemistry caused by chilling and cv. ZJ8424 was more sensitive to the extreme temperatures than cv. YS01.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) during water stress and after rehydration were measured in Phaseolus vulgaris, Beta vulgaris, and Zea mays. Immediately before imposition of water stress by cessation of watering, plants were irrigated with water (control), 100 M abscisic acid (ABA), and/or 10 M N6-benzyladenine (BA). In all three species, application of ABA decreased gs, E, and PN already 1 h after application. However, during water stress gs, E, and PN in plants pre-treated with ABA remained higher than in plants pre-treated with water. Positive effects of ABA application were observed also after rehydration. In contrast, the effects of pre-treatment with BA were species-specific. While in bean plants BA application ameliorated negative effect of water stress, only very slight effects were observed in maize, and in sugar beet BA even aggravated the effects of water stress.  相似文献

To investigate whether brassinosteroids (BRs) could be used to alleviate chill-induced inhibition of photosynthesis in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L) during chilling and subsequent recovery, the effects of exogenously applied 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) on gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and antioxidant enzyme activity were studied. Cucumber plants were exposed to chilling under low light (12/8°C and 100 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD) for 3 days and then recovered under normal temperature and high irradiance (28/18°C and 600 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD) for 6 days. Chilling significantly decreased the net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s), and increased rate of O2 ·− formation and H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in cucumber leaves, but did not influence the optimal quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm). Chilling also decreased the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII) and photochemical quenching (qP), but induced an increase in nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). High irradiance (600 μmol m−2 s−1) further aggravated the decrease in P N, g s, ΦPSII and qP, and enhanced the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and accumulation in the first day of recovery after chilling. However, high irradiance induced a sharp decrease in Fv/Fm and NPQ, as well as the activities of SOD and APX on the first day of recovery. EBR pretreatment significantly alleviated chill-induced inhibition of photosynthesis during chilling stress and subsequent recovery period, which was mainly due to significant increases in g s, ΦPSII, qP and NPQ. EBR pretreatment also reduced ROS generation and accumulation, and increased the activities of SOD and APX during chilling and subsequent recovery. Those results suggest that EBR pretreatment alleviates the chill reduction in photosynthesis and accelerated the recovery rate mainly by increasing of the stomatal conductance, the efficiency of utilization and dissipation of leaf absorbed light, and the activity of the ROS scavenging system during chilling and subsequent recovery period.  相似文献

Pulse amplitude modulation fluorescence was used to investigate whether abscisic acid (ABA) pretreatment increases the desiccation tolerance of photosynthesis in the moss Atrichum undulatum. In unstressed plants, ABA pretreatment decreased the F V/F m ratio, largely as a result of an increase in F o. This indicated a reduction in energy transfer between LHCII and PSII, possibly hardening the moss to subsequent stress by reducing the production of the reactive oxygen species near PSII. During desiccation, F 0, F m, F v/F m, PSII, and NPQ and F 0 quenching declined in ABA-treated and nontreated mosses. However, during rehydration, F 0, F m, F v/F m, and PSII recovered faster in ABA-treated plants, suggesting that ABA improved the tolerance of photosystem II to desiccation. NPQ increased upon rehydration in mosses from both treatments, but much more rapidly in ABA-treated plants; during the first hour of rehydration, NPQ was two-fold greater in plants treated with ABA. F 0quenching followed a similar pattern, indicating that ABA treatment stimulated zeaxanthin-based quenching. The implications of these results for the mechanisms of ABA-induced desiccation tolerance in A. undulatum are discussed.  相似文献

Plants of C. canephora grown in pots under low nitrogen (LN) or high nitrogen (HN) applications were submitted to either cyclic water stress or daily irrigation. Water deficit led to marked decreases in net carbon assimilation rate (A) and, to a lesser extent, in stomatal conductance (gs), regardless of the N treatments. In well-watered plants, A appreciably increased in HN plants relative to LN plants without significant changes in gs. As a whole, changes in internal CO2 concentration predominantly reflected changes in A rather than in gs. Under irrigated conditions, A, but not gs, correlated with leaf N concentration in a curvilinear way. Photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency was considerably low, and decreased with increasing leaf N concentration. Limited N, but not water, slightly decreased the maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII). Under continuous irrigation, LN plants had a smaller quantum yield of electron transport (PSII) through slight decreases of photochemical quenching (qp) and capture efficiency of excitation energy by open PSII reaction centres, and increases in Stern-Volmer non-photochemical quenching. Under water-stressed conditions, changes in PSII photochemistry were apparent only in HN plants, with a 25 % decrease in PSII, due mainly to variations in qp. Biochemical constraints, rather than stomatal or photochemical limitations, provoked the decreases in A under limited supply of either N or water.  相似文献

The possibility to improve the recovery of sugar beet plants after water stress by application of synthetic cytokinins N6-benzyladenine (BA) or N6-(m-hydroxybenzyl)adenosine (HBA) was tested. Relative water content (RWC), net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), chlorophyll (Chl) a and Chl b contents, and photosystem 2 efficiency characterized by variable to maximal fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm) were measured in control plants, in water-stressed plants, and after rehydration (4, 8, 24, and 48 h). Water stress markedly decreased parameters of gas exchange, but they started to recover soon after irrigation. Application of BA or HBA to the substrate or sprayed on leaves only slightly stimulated recovery of PN, E, and gs in rehydrated plants, especially during the first phases of recovery. Chl contents decreased only under severe water stress and Fv/Fm ratio was not significantly affected by water stress applied. Positive effects of BA or HBA application on Chl content and Fv/Fm ratio were mostly not observed.  相似文献

The inhibition of photosynthetic activity by bisulphite was studied in intact leaves of abscisic acid (ABA)-treated and non-treated (control) barley plants. ABA inhibited the photosynthetic process as evidenced by lower values of chlorophyll fluorescence kinetic parameters Fv/Fm (photosystem 2 activity) and Rfd (vitality index, related to the whole photosynthetic activity) compared with ABA-non-treated plants. After bisulphite treatment, the extent of inhibition was smaller in ABA-treated plants than in the control ones indicating a protective effect of ABA. The protective action sites of ABA were the QA reduction and the Calvin cycle. This revised version was published online in September 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Crown carbon gain is maximized for a given total water loss if stomatal conductance (gs) varies such that the marginal carbon product of water (?A/?E) remains invariant both over time and among leaves in a plant crown, provided the curvature of assimilation rate (A) versus transpiration rate (E) is negative. We tested this prediction across distinct crown positions in situ for the first time by parameterizing a biophysical model across 14 positions in four grapevine crowns (Vitis vinifera), computing optimal patterns of gs and E over a day and comparing these to the observed patterns. Observed water use was higher than optimal for leaves in the crown interior, but lower than optimal in most other positions. Crown carbon gain was 18% lower under measured gs than under optimal gs. Positive curvature occurred in 39.6% of cases due to low boundary layer conductance (gbw), and optimal gs was zero in 11% of cases because ?A/?E was below the target value at all gs. Some conclusions changed if we assumed infinite gbw, but optimal and measured E still diverged systematically in time and space. We conclude that the theory's spatial dimension and assumption of positive curvature require further experimental testing.  相似文献

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plantlets were grown on Murashige and Skoog medium in ventilated Magenta boxes and for the last subculture 10 μM ABA was added to the medium. After three weeks plantlets were transferred into pots with Perlite moistened with water and grown in controlled conditions (16-h photoperiod, day/night temperature 25/20 °C, air humidity about 45 %) either under low or high irradiance of 150 (LI) and 700 (HI) μmol m−2 s−1, respectively. Content of endogenous ABA was 271.7 pmol g−1(f.m.) in ABA treated plantlets, while in control plantlets it was only 53.3 pmol g−1(f.m.). After ex vitro transfer, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate decreased considerably in comparison with in vitro grown plantlets and remained lower also 7 d after ex vitro transfer, especially in ABA-treated plants and so wilting of plants was practically eliminated. Net photosynthetic rate also decreased 1 d after ex vitro transfer but after 7 d it was mostly higher than that of in vitro grown plantlets. Water use efficiency significantly increased in ABA-treated plants. Chlorophyll a+b content did not change immediately after ex vitro transfer, nevertheless, after 7 d chlorophyll content was higher in ABA-treated plants. Pool of xanthophyll cycle pigments (XCP) and the degree of their deepoxidation (DEPS), which are connected with harmless dissipation of light energy, increased under high irradiance. Contents of XCP and ABA precursors (neoxanthin and violaxanthin) were lower in ABA-treated plants than in control plants indicating less stress in these plants. Most chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters did not change considerably after ex vitro transfer and so the photoinhibition was not observed even under HI. Slight increase in non-photochemical quenching under HI in ABA-treated plants suggested their better photoprotection. Thus application of ABA to the last subculture can improve acclimatization of in vitro grown plants to ex vitro conditions  相似文献

The interaction of extreme temperature events with future atmospheric CO2 concentrations may have strong impacts on physiological performance of desert shrub seedlings, which during the critical establishment phase often endure temperature extremes in conjunction with pronounced drought. To evaluate the interaction of drought and CO2 on photosynthesis during heat stress, one-year-old Larrea tridentata[DC] Cov. seedlings were exposed to nine days of heat with midday air temperature maxima reaching 53 °C under three atmospheric CO2 concentrations (360, 550 and 700 mol mol–1) and two water regimes (well-watered and droughted). Photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and water potential responses were measured prior to, during and one week following the high temperature stress event. Heat stress markedly decreased net photosynthetic rate (A net), stomatal conductance (g s), and the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (F v/F m) in all plants except for well-watered L. tridentata grown in 700 mol mol–1 CO2. A net and g s remained similar to pre-stress levels in these plants. In droughted L. tridentata, A net was ca. 2× (in 550 mol mol–1 CO2) to 3× (in 700 mol mol–1 CO2) higher than in ambient-CO2-grown plants, while g s and F v/F m were similar and low in all CO2 treatments. Following heat stress, g s in all well-watered plants rose dramatically, exceeding pre-stress levels by up to 100%. In droughted plants, g s and A net rose only in plants grown at elevated CO2 following release from heat. This recovery response was strongest at 700 mol mol–1 CO2, which returned to A net and g s values similar to pre-heat following several days of recovery. Extreme heat diminished the photosynthetic down-regulation response to growth at elevated CO2 under well-watered conditions, similar to the action of drought. Ambient-CO2-grown L. tridentata did not show significant recovery of photosynthetic capacity (A \max and CE) after alleviation of temperature stress, especially when exposed to drought, while plants exposed to elevated CO2 appeared to be unaffected. These findings suggest that elevated CO2 could promote photosynthetic activity during critical periods of seedling establishment, and enhance the potential for L. tridentata to survive extreme high temperature events.  相似文献

The symbiotic association of endophyte fungus, Neotyphodium lolii, and ryegrass improves the ryegrass resistance to drought. This is shown by a 30 % increase in the number of suckers in infected plants (E+), compared to plants lacking endophyte (E−), and by a higher water potential in the E+ than E− plants. The E+ plants have higher stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate, net photosynthetic rate (P N), and photorespiratory electron transport rate than the E− plants. The maximal photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) and the actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPS2) are not affected by the endophyte fungus. The increase in P N of the E+ plants subjected to water stress was independent from internal CO2 concentration. An increased P N was observed in E+ plants also in optimal water supply. Hence the drought resistance of E+ plants results in increased g s, P N, and photorespiratory electron transport rate. Influence of manganese (Mn) toxicity on photosynthesis in ricebean (Vigna umbellata) was studied by the measurement of gas exchange characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) were reduced with increasing Mn concentration in nutrient solution. The reduction in g s and E was more pronounced at 6 d of Mn treatment. However, P N declined at 2 d of Mn treatment implying that the reduction in photosynthesis was not due to the direct effect of Mn on stomatal regulation. Mn did not affect the maximum efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemistry (Fv/Fm). A reduction in photochemical quenching (qP) and excitation capture efficiency of open PS2 (Fv′/Fm′) with a concomitant increase in qN was observed. This implies that reduced demand for ATP and NADPH due to the reduction in photosynthesis causes a down-regulation of PS2 photochemistry and thus a high pH gradient (increase in qN) and limited electron transport (decreased qP). This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Plant growth, chlorophyll (Chl) content, photosynthetic gas exchange, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCO) enzyme activity, and Chl fluorescence in radish (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) plants were examined after turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) infection. Plant fresh mass, dry mass, Chl content, net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), and RuBPCO activity were significantly lower in infected plants after 5 weeks of virus infection as compared to healthy plants. The 5-week virus infection did not induce significant differences in intercellular CO2 concentration (C i, photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm), excitation capture efficiency of open PS2 reaction centres (Fv'/Fm'), effective quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (ΔF/Fm'), and photochemical quenching (qP), but non-photochemical quenching (qN) and alternative electron sink (AES) were significantly enhanced. Thus the decreased plant biomass of TuMV-infected plants might be associated with the decreased photosynthetic activity mainly due to reduced RuBPCO activity.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effect of day/night temperature difference (DIF) on photosynthetic characteristics of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum, cv. Jinguan 5) at fruit stage, an experiment was carried out in climate chambers. Five day/night temperature regimes (16/34, 19/31, 25/25, 31/19, and 34/16°C) with respective DIFs of -18, -12, 0, +12, and +18 were used and measured at mean daily temperature of 25°C. The results showed that chlorophyll (Chl) a, Chl b, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (?PSII), and photochemical quenching (qp) significantly increased under positive DIF, while they decreased with negative DIF. In contrast, the Chl a/b ratio and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) decreased under positive DIF, while increased with negative DIF. Chl a, Chl b, PN, gs, Fv/Fm, ?PSII, and qp were larger under +12 DIF than those at +18 DIF, while Chl a/b and NPQ showed an opposite trend.  相似文献

Six months old in vitro-grown Anoectochilus formosanus plantlets were transferred to ex-vitro acclimation under low irradiance, LI [60 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1], intermediate irradiance, II [180 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1], and high irradiance, HI [300 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1] for 30 d. Imposition of II led to a significant increase of chlorophyll (Chl) b content, rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (g s), electron transfer rate (ETR), quantum yield of electron transport from water through photosystem 2 (ΦPS2), and activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/ oxygenase (RuBPCO, EC 4.1.1.39). This indicates that Anoectochilus was better acclimated at II compared to LI treatment. On the other hand, HI acclimation led to a significant reduction of Chl a and b, P N, E, g s, photochemical quenching, dark-adapted quantum efficiency of open PS2 centres (Fv/Fm), probability of an absorbed photon reaching an open PS2 reaction centre (Fv′/Fm′), ETR, ΦPS2, and energy efficiency of CO2 fixation (ΦCO2PS2). This indicates that HI treatment considerably exceeded the photo-protective capacity and Anoectochilus suffered HI induced damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. Imposition of HI significantly increased the contents of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin (ZEA), non-photochemical quenching, and conversion of violaxanthin to ZEA. Thus Anoectochilus modifies its system to dissipate excess excitation energy and to protect the photosynthetic machinery.  相似文献

Seeds of Suaeda salsa were cultured in dark for 3 d and betacyanin accumulation in seedlings was promoted significantly. Then the seedlings with accumulated betacyanin (C+B) were transferred to 14/10 h light/dark and used for chilling treatment 15 d later. Photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemistry, D1 protein content, and xanthophyll cycle during the chilling-induced photoinhibition (exposed to 5 °C at a moderate photon flux density of 500 μmol m−2 s−1 for 3 h) and the subsequent restoration were compared between the C+B seedlings and the control (C) ones. The maximal efficiency of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm), the efficiency of excitation energy capture by open PS2 centres (Fv′/Fm′), and the yield of PS2 electron transport (ΦPS2) of the C+B and C leaves both decreased during photoinhibition. However, smaller decreases in Fv/Fm, Fv′/Fm′, and ΦPS2 were observed in the C+B leaves than in C ones. At the same time, the deepoxidation state of xanthophyll cycle, indicated by (A+Z)/(V+A+Z) ratio, increased rapidly but the D1 protein content decreased considerably during the photoinhibition. The increase in rate of (A+Z)/(V+A+Z) was higher but the D1 protein turnover was slower in C+B than C leaves. After photoinhibition treatment, the plants were transferred to a dim irradiation (10 μmol m−2 s−1) at 25 °C for restoration. During restoration, the chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters, D1 protein content, and xanthophyll cycle components relaxed gradually, but the rate and level of restoration in the C+B leaves was greater than those in the C leaves. The addition of betacyanins to the thylakoid solution in vitro resulted in similar changes of Fv/Fm, D1 protein content, and (A+Z)/(V+A+Z) ratio during the chilling process. Therefore, betacyanin accumulation in S. salsa seedlings may result in higher resistance to photoinhibition, larger slowing down of D1 protein turnover, and enhancement of non-radiative energy dissipation associated with xanthophyll cycle, as well as in greater restoration after photoinhibition than in the control when subjected to chilling at moderate irradiance.  相似文献
