Three crosses of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell) involving six cultivars (WC29, WH291, SGP 14, RAJ. 1972, WH377 and HD 2329) were selected on the basis of combining ability analysis to study genetics of transgressive segregation for tillers/plant, grains/spike, 1000 grain weight and grain yield/plant using various mating designs. Diallel analysis indicated that both additive and non- additive components were significant for all the characters. On the basis of general combining ability and specific combining ability effects, the parents WH 291 and WH 377 were found to be good general combiners for tillers/ plant, 1000 grain weight and grain yield/plant. For grains/spike SGP 14 was found to be a good general combiner. The cross WH 377 × HD 2329 for tillers/plant, SGP 14 × Raj. 1972 for grains/spike and grain yield/plant and WC 29 × WH 291 for 1000 grain weight were found to be good cross combinations. Generation mean analysis indicated that the additive-dominance model was inadequate for all the characters in all the crosses except for 1000 grain weight in WC29 × WH291. Additive component was more pronounced than non-additive components for all the characters in all the crosses except for tillers/ plant in WH 377 × HD 2329. Predictions for transgressive segregants from F3 was more accurate than that from generation mean analysis. However, prediction from both the sources were equally efficient if additive-dominance model was adequate. In general, observed frequencies of transgressive segregants were more in F2 and BIPi than F4 but the majority of them were discarded on progeny testing. Biparental mating had an impact in increasing the frequencies of transgressive segregants for different characters in all the crosses. The crosses, WH 377 × HD 2329 for grain yield/ plant, SGP 14 × Raj. 1972 for tillers/plant and WC 29 × WH 291 for grains/spike and 1000 grain weight were found to be potential crosses for transgressive segregants. A comparison of combining ability of parents and crosses, and observed and predicted frequencies of transgressive segregants indicated that the potential crosses for transgressive segregants were those that had high sea effects and involved high and low general combiners. The crosses involving low general combiners irrespective of their sea effects showed poor performance with respect to transgressive segregation.  相似文献

A set of diallel crosses involving 10 parents was made to have information on the extent of heterosis over mid-parent and better parent and inbreeding depression for yield and yield contributing characters under three different environments. Marked heterobeltiosis for grain yield and its important components were observed. For grain yield, 83 crosses showed significant positive heterobeltiosis in all the three sowing dates, however, twenty crosses showed significant consistent heterobeltiosis for grain yield per plant over all the three environments. The maximum heterobeltiosis for grain yield per plant observed was 50.94% (Raj 3765 x HD 2285), 121.08% (PBW 373 x HD 2329) and 93.96% (PBW 373 x HD 2329) under early, normal and late sowing conditions, respectively. Cross PBW 373 x HD 2329 in both early and normal plantings and cross Raj 3765 x HD 2285 under late planting were observed most heterotic for grain yield. The crosses showing heterosis for grain yield were not heterotic for all the characters. Heterosis for grain yield per spike followed by tillers per plant and 1000-grain weight was independently associated with heterosis for grain yield in early and normal plantings. However, heterosis for grain yield per spike, dwarf plant height and tillers per plant contributed maximum towards yield heterosis. Significant inbreeding depression was recorded frequently for yield and yield contributing traits, however, in a few traits it was observed significant negative indicated that F(2) was superior to F(1) considered desirable combination for trait(s). The study reveals good scope for commercial exploitation of heterosis as well as isolation of pure lines among the progenies of heterotic F(1) for improvement of yield levels in bread wheat.  相似文献

Summary Four exotic and four indigenous strains of barley were used for making diallel crosses. The sets of parents and crosses making full, half and quarter diallel were analysed in a randomized block design for plant height, number of effective tillers, ear length, grain yield per plant, 100 grain weight and number of grains per ear.The three alternatives of diallel were similar with respect to the estimates of degree of dominance, general combining ability and specific combining ability, indicating that all these three methods of diallel were equally efficient. However, as the number of entries are minimum in quarter diallel, it would be economical in terms of cost, time and labour to estimate genetic parameters by this method. Average degree of dominance was found in the range of overdominance. The ranking of parents on the basis of their array mean was similar to the ranking based on gca effects. Similarly, the ranking of crosses on the basis of per se performance was similar to the ranking based on sca effects. This suggests that the selection of best general combiner or best cross combinations may be easier and more effective through array mean for per se performance rather than through high gca and sea effects, respectively. From among 56 crosses, IB-226 X X C-164 was the one which showed superiority for maximum number of characters followed by AB-12/59 X PTS-57. High sea effect for plant height, ear length, grain yield, 100 grain weight and number of grains per ear was the result of cross between parents having high X low general combining ability, indicating additive X dominance type of gene interaction. For number of effective tillers, high sca was produced by low x low general combiners, indicating dominance x dominance gene interaction.Part of a Ph. Summary The efficiency of three analyses, namely, Designs I and II of Comstock and Robinson (1952) and standard Design III analysis of Kearsey and Jinks (1968), was compared in the F2s of three wheat crosses (Norteno 67 x HD 1982, HD 1982 x Moti and Sonalika x Moti) for plant height, spikelets per spike and yield per plant. The three analyses showed a remarkable agreement in estimating the additive (D) component for all three characters in all three crosses. But, as regards the estimation of dominance ] (H) component, standard Design III analysis proved to be more efficient than the other two analyses in crosses 2 (HD 1982 x Moti) and 3 (Sonalika x Moti) for all three characters except spikelets per spike in cross 3.  相似文献

Combining ability for grain yield, yield components, and several agronomic and qualitative traits, was studied in a seven-parent diallel cross. The 21 F1 hybrids and the seven parental cultivars were grown in replicated plot trials sown at normal seed density in three locations in the years 1992 and 1993. The effects of general combining ability (gca) were highly significant for all the traits measured with the exception of seeds per spikelet, while the specific combining ability (sca) effects were statistically significant for grain yield, plant height, heading time, for all the yield components, and for the Chopin alveographic parameters P and P/L ratio. For the majority of the traits measured gca was greater than sca. Standard heterosis (sh) for grain yield, i.e., the superiority of the hybrids over the best pure line cultivar(cv Eridano), was only 3.3%, confirming previous finding which indicate sh effects in the range of 10%. The most interesting hybrid derived from the cross Maestra x Golia revealed a yield level approaching that of the highest yielding cv Eridano but appeared more interesting because of its reduced plant height and superior bread-making quality, signifying a selling price 30% higher. It was concluded, therefore, that the first generation of hybrids, likely to appear on the market in the next few years, will be characterized by a yield potential only slightly superior to that of the best standard cvs but associated with other desirable traits, such as bread-making quality.  相似文献

Protoplasts were isolated from the basal meristematic region of leaves from 6-day-old seedlings of wheat (Triticum aestivum). Protoplasts divided when cultured on MS medium (as agarose beads) in presence of nurse tissue. Donor seedlings when grown on BAP-supplemented MS medium were found to be considerably superior for protoplast isolation and culture than when grown on MS basal medium, in terms of protoplast viability, cell wall formation and cell division frequency. In addition, reduction of ammonium content of the culture medium, together with a dark Incubation, led to a high protoplast division frequency of about 70%. Microcolonies of 10-to 12-celled stages were obtained in Triticum aestivum, varieties HD 2329, HD 2285, Kalyan Sona, Arjun and CPAN 1676.  相似文献

Summary A half diallel analysis involving nine cultivars showed that additive as well as non-additive gene effects were important for the inheritance of seed yield per plant, 100-seed weights, protein content and potassium per cent. For remaining traits non-additive genetic components were important. Overdominance was observed for all traits except for 100-seed weight, which expressed partial dominance. Parents PMR-T10, EC21857, EC109182, T163 and EC109189 were good general combiners for seed yield, seed weight and quality traits. In general there was a good relationship between per se performance and the gca effects of the parents for all traits. Cross combinations such as LMR8 x EC109182,LMR8 x PMR-T10,LMR8 x EC21857,PMRT10 x EC21857 and P23 x EC21857 were found promising. The seed yield was positively correlated with other quality traits. Protein had a positive correlation with methionine and phosphorus. All the values of correlation co-efficients were non-significant except for yield with potassium, 100-seed weight and protein with methionine, indicating that yield and quality attributes can be improved simultaneously by simple selection procedures.  相似文献

Four near-isonuclear polycytoplasmic versions of 81A and two of Pb 402A male-sterile lines of pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) were used in factorial matings with five inbred male testers in different combinations in three sets. The cytoplasmic differences were studied for several agronomic traits using mean values and general combining effects (gca) of male-sterile lines, and specific combining ability effects of hybrids. The fertility/ sterility behaviour of different male-sterile lines in crosses with common male parents was also studied. Significant differences among near-isonuclear polycytoplasmic lines were observed in mean values for a few traits such as plant height, leaf length and peduncle length, but the differences for combining ability were more pronounced. The A3 cytoplasm was a better general combiner than the A2 cytoplasm for grain yield and both A2 and A3 cytoplasms were better general combiners for leaf length and peduncle length. In addition, superiority of A3 cytoplasm for gca was observed for plant height and ear characters over the A2 cytoplasm in set II. A differential behaviour of cytoplasms, both in combination with a common pollinator and across pollinators, was observed for several traits. The results provide evidence for the distinctiveness of different cytoplasmic sources in pearl millet and for the influence of cytoplasmic factors on the phenotypic expression of nuclear genes. A diversification of male sterility sources in the breeding of pearl millet hybrids is suggested.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cvs. HD 2285 (relatively tolerant) and WH 542 (susceptible) were exposed to ambient and elevated temperature (3–4 °C higher) in open top chambers during post anthesis period. The grain yield components were determined at the time of maturity. In order to elucidate the basis of differential tolerance of these cultivars, the excised developing grains (20 d after anthesis) of ambient grown plants were incubated at 15, 25, 35 and 45 °C for 2 h and then analysed for the activities of soluble starch synthase (SSS), granule bound starch synthase (GBSS), kinetic parameters of SSS and content of heat shock protein (HSP 100). The elevated temperature during grain development significantly decreased grain growth in WH 542 whereas no such decrease was observed in HD 2285. High temperature tolerance of HD 2285 was found to be associated with higher catalytic efficiency (Vmax/Km) of SSS at elevated temperature and higher content of HSP 100.  相似文献

Summary Four different sets of partial diallels were analysed for their relative efficiencies for estimating the genetic parameters in barley: (1) partial diallel with 12 parents, each involved in only 5 crosses; (2) partial diallel with 12 parents, each involved in only 3 crosses; (3) partial diallel with 8 parents, each involved in only 5 crosses; and (4) partial diallel with 8 parents, each involved in only 3 crosses. In partial diallel experiments, the estimates of gca effects were higher than in those of full diallel. Ranking pattern of the parents on the basis of gca effects in partial diallels deviated considerably from the ranking in full diallel. With decreasing s per parent, the deviation in ranking was also more. This clearly suggests the unsuitability of partial diallel analysis for screening high general combiners. Selection of best cross combinations is also not possible because only a sample of crosses (s out of n) is analysed under partial diallel so that there is every possibility of the best cross being excluded from the sample. In general, overdominance was exhibited, indicating that there is ample scope for heterosis breeding in barley.  相似文献

Summary Twenty-eight diallel trials over 8 years and two locations were analysed to estimate genetic variances for agronomic characters of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). The data were analysed according to Method 4 and Model I of Griffing (1956). Days to flowering, plant height, and seed size were found to be predominantly under additive inheritance and were highly predictable. Both additive and non-additive genetic components were important for seed yield, number of branches, pods per plant, and seeds per pod. Although both general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) varied significantly with generation, components of gca mean squares were invariably much larger than gca x generation interaction components, indicating that either the F1 or the F2 generation can be used to estimate the gca components effectively. Combined diallel analysis of F2s over locations revealed the importance of combining ability x location interactions and emphasized the need for testing over more than one location for the precise estimation of combining ability. The implications of these findings and those reported earlier in the literature on the breeding strategies/methods for the genetic improvement of agronomic characters in chickpea are discussed.ICRISAT journal article no. 1199  相似文献

The role of plant antioxidant system in water stress tolerance was studied in three contrasting wheat genotypes. Water stress imposed at different stages after anthesis resulted in a general increase in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and decrease in membrane stability index (MSI), and contents of chlorophylls (Chl) and carotenoids (Car). Antioxidant enzymes like glutathione reductase and ascorbate peroxidase significantly increased under water stress. Genotype C 306, which had highest glutathione reductase and ascorbate peroxidase activity, also showed lowest LPO and highest MSI, and Chl and Car contents under water stress in comparison to susceptible genotype HD 2329, which showed lowest antioxidant enzyme activity as well as MSI, Chl and Car contents and highest LPO. HD 2285 which is tolerant to high temperature during grain filling period showed intermediate behaviour. Thus, the relative tolerance of a genotype to water stress as reflected by its comparatively lower LPO and higher MSI, Chl and Car contents is closely associated with its antioxidant enzyme system. FourteenAzospirillum brasilense strains growing at a sub-optimum temperature were selected based on their ability to grow and carry out plant growth promoting activities at 22°C. The strains were tested for their response to inoculation in wheat (two popular cultivars, HD2285 and WH547, under sterile conditions) crop using sterile and nonsterile rooting medium. Significant increase in plant growth parameters was observed: the overall response to inoculation was better in cultivar HD 2285. Based on their performance under sterile conditions, 4 strains were selected and compared under nonsterile conditions with strain sensitive to a sub-optimum temperature in pots using wheat variety HD2285. The strains capable of growing at the sub-optimum temperature can colonize the wheat endorhizosphere efficiently and improve the plant growth and yield as compared to sensitive strain; a 25–27% increase in grain yield was found on inoculating two selected strains compared to NO 3 - control.  相似文献

Summary Five Hawaiian commercial sugarcane (Saccharum sp. hybrids) clones were crossed in a full diallel. Four morphological characters were studied in the progeny: number of millable stalks per plant, stalk diameter, stalk length, and sucrose content. A fifth character, plant volume, was calculated from stalk number, stalk diameter and stalk length. The five selected parental clones were treated as fixed variables in the analysis. General combining ability (gca) was significant for all five characters; specific combining ability (sca) was significant for stalk diameter, stalk length, and plant volume. The variance for gca was large in all progeny populations. However, the variance for sca was large in the progeny of only some clones and/or for some individual characters. A complete 4 x 4 diallel cross of CF#1 (C), C57BL/6NCrj (B) C3H/HeNCrj (H) and Yonakuni wild mice (Y, Mus musculus molossinus yonakuni) has been conducted to estimate the effects of sex, degree of heterosis, general combining ability (gca), specific combining ability (sca), maternal ability, and reciprocal cross on body weight at 1 (Wk1), 3 (Wk3), 6 (Wk6) and 10 (Wk10) weeks of age. A least squares analysis was performed on 828 mice and all sources of variation showed significant effects (P < 0.01) on body weight but not sex at Wk1 (P > 0.05). Males were heavier than females (P < 0.01) at Wk3, Wk6 and Wk10. C and Y were the heaviest and lightest in body weight, whereas H and B were intermediate. Differences in body weight were observed between linebred and linecross at all ages studied: 6.57%, 10.22%, 8.70% and 5.89% heterosis for the respective ages. The degree of gca and maternal effects can be ranked as C > H > B > Y. Crossing between C and H had greater sca than other combinations at all ages studied, whereas B x Y had the smallest. Mean body weight of the offspring from two-line reciprocal cross differed according to their dam. A relatively large proportion of additive genetic effects in contributing to the variation in offspring body weight was indicated.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate the general combining ability of the parents and specific combining ability of hybrids for earliness traits for line selection. Inheritance and interrelationships of earliness characters were evaluated in a line x tester design. Three intermediate-early-maturing female (lines) which are grown regionally and four early-maturing males (testers) cotton varieties were crossed in 2003. The twelve F(1) and seven parents were planted randomized block design with three replications in 2004. For each earliness trait, general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability and gene effects were estimated using the line x tester method of analysis and also were determined heterosis and narrow sense heritability. Parents and their hybrids (except the monopodial branch) were significant for all the earliness traits studied. Estimates of variance due to GCA and SCA and their ratio revealed predominantly non-additive gene effects for date of first square, date of first flowers and harvested rate of first picking. Among the lines, Ersan 92 and Maras 92 and among the testers Acala Royal was found to be the best general combiners for most of the earliness characters. Four out of twelve crosses namely Ersan 92 x Chirpan 603, Ersan 92 x Acala Maxa, Maras 92 x Acala Royal and Nazilli 87 x Acala Royal were found to be the best crosses for investigated earliness characters.  相似文献

Six varieties, Kundan (K), Galvez-87 (G), Trap (T), Chris (C), Mango (M) and PBW-348 (P) along with fast ruster, Agra Local (AL), were screened for seedling reaction and adult pant response to leaf rust. Seedlings of all six varieties were susceptible while adult plants showed lower susceptability response than Agra Local. The F1s among the varieties, and also with Agra Local, showed the values lesser than the respective mid parental values for AUDPC suggesting a polygenic mode of inheritance. ANOVA for combining ability effects indicated variation due to the GCA and SCA effects, which indicated that both additive as well as non-additive type of genetic variances, govern AUDPC. The higher values for the GCA variance over the SCA variance indicated the predominance of an additive component over the dominance component for AUDPC. Significant values for GCA effects indicated that Kundan, Galvez-87 and Trap can be used as good general combiners for AUDPC. The crosses, KxAL, GxAL and TxAL showed significant sca effects for AUDPC, which indicated the predominance of non-additive gene effects in these crosses. Additive x additive and dominance x dominance components of the 5- parameter model were highly significant and contributed maximum extent compared to the additive and dominance components in the cross KxG, while dominance and dominance x dominance components contributed maximum in the remaining crosses. Under such a situation, improvement in the character may be expected through standard selection procedure, which may first exploit the additive gene effects and simultaneously care should be taken to see that the dominance effects are not dissipated, but rather they should be concentrated.  相似文献

Role of Antioxidant Systems in Wheat Genotypes Tolerance to Water Stress   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
The role of plant antioxidant systems in stress tolerance was studied in leaves of three contrasting wheat genotypes. Drought imposed at two different stages after anthesis resulted in an increase in H2O2 accumulation and lipid peroxidation and decrease in ascorbic acid content. Antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and catalase significantly increased under water stress. Drought tolerant genotype C 306 which had highest ascorbate peroxidase and catalase activity and ascorbic acid content also showed lowest H2O2 accumulation and lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde content) under water stress in comparison to susceptible genotype HD 2329 which showed lowest antioxidant enzyme activity and ascorbic acid content and highest H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation. HD 2285 which is tolerant to high temperature during grain filling period showed intermediate behaviour. Superoxide dismutase activity, however, did not show significant differences among the genotypes under irrigated as well as water stress condition. It seems that H2O2 scavenging systems as represented by ascorbate peroxidase and catalase are more important in imparting tolerance against drought induced oxidative stress than superoxide dismutase alone. Genetic studies for leaf-rust resistance were conducted on four Indian (CPAN1235, HD2135, HP1209, and VL404) and two Australian (CSP44 and Oxley) bread wheat cultivars. The F2 and F3 plants from their crosses with each other and with susceptible cultivar Agra Local were tested against a mixture of pathotypes 77-1 and 77-2 (variants of race 77). Disease scores on F1's from resistant/susceptible parent crosses indicated partial dominance of resistance in these wheats. The six cultivars have two adult-plant resistance genes each. Their intercrosses revealed similar resistance gene(s) in CSP44 and Oxley, and CPAN1235 and HP1209. The six wheats appear to carry at least seven diverse leaf-rust resistance genes (temporarily named LrI to LrO) against pathotypes 77-1 + 77-2. Adult-plant resistance is additive and therefore the combinations of partially effective resistance genes identified in this study can provide higher levels of resistance. Because these genes are of hexaploid origin, they can be easily exploited in breeding programs. Furthermore, two or more resistance genes from the six wheat cultivars when combined with Lr34 are likely to impart durable resistance to leaf rust.  相似文献
