It has become a truism that we humans are genetically about 99% identical to chimpanzees. The origins of this assertion are clear: among early studies of DNA sequences, nucleotide identity between humans and chimpanzees was found to average around 98.9%.(1) However, this figure is correct only with respect to regions of the genome that are shared between humans and chimpanzees. Often ignored are the many parts of their genomes that are not shared. Genomic rearrangements, including insertions, deletions, translocations and duplications, have long been recognized as potentially important sources of novel genomic material(2,3) and are known to account for major genomic differences between humans and chimpanzees.(4) Further, such changes have been implicated in a number of genetic disorders, such as DiGeorge, Angelman/Prader-Willi and Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndromes.(5)  相似文献

The genus Carnobacterium contains nine species, but only C. divergens and C. maltaromaticum are frequently isolated from natural environments and foods. They are tolerant to freezing/thawing and high pressure and able to grow at low temperatures, anaerobically and with increased CO(2) concentrations. They metabolize arginine and various carbohydrates, including chitin, and this may improve their survival in the environment. Carnobacterium divergens and C. maltaromaticum have been extensively studied as protective cultures in order to inhibit growth of Listeria monocytogenes in fish and meat products. Several carnobacterial bacteriocins are known, and parameters that affect their production have been described. Currently, however, no isolates are commercially applied as protective cultures. Carnobacteria can spoil chilled foods, but spoilage activity shows intraspecies and interspecies variation. The responsible spoilage metabolites are not well characterized, but branched alcohols and aldehydes play a partial role. Their production of tyramine in foods is critical for susceptible individuals, but carnobacteria are not otherwise human pathogens. Carnobacterium maltaromaticum can be a fish pathogen, although carnobacteria are also suggested as probiotic cultures for use in aquaculture. Representative genome sequences are not yet available, but would be valuable to answer questions associated with fundamental and applied aspects of this important genus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Although there are proportionately fewer pet owners in Japan than in the United States, the keeping of indigenous Japanese dog breeds, along with those common in Europe and North America, is long-established. Japan has a centralized governmental network of animal shelters, which permits accurate record-keeping of the numbers of dogs and cats admitted, reclaimed, and euthanized. Although in the United States an accurate census is not simple to accomplish because a variety of humane societies and animal control agencies admit homeless dogs and cats, some cultural comparisons are possible.

Despite recent increases in petkeeping in Japan, the numbers of dogs admitted to shelters have decreased from 345,136 dogs in 1984 to 243, 753 dogs in 1994. The numbers euthanized show similar declines, from 331,442 in 1984 to 219,831 in 1994. In the city of Tokyo, kittens account for the majority of the animals admitted: 34,745 kittens (55%) of a total of 62,803 dogs and cats in 1980; 12,805 kittens (61%) of a total of 21,075 in 1993. Cats usually are brought in after being found on the street and are not reclaimed by their owners; virtually all are euthanized. Most dogs, 61%, are caught as strays by shelter personnel. Among those admitted to Tokyo shelters, 41% are reclaimed or returned to the owner, 7% are adopted by new owners, and 52% are euthanized.

Spaying and neutering of dogs and cats are not wide spread practices in Japan. There are few private shelters; the government provides no tax incentives for charitable contributions to such organizations. While American shelters invariably offer animals for adoption, most of Japan's governmental shelters do not. However, this is gradually changing.  相似文献

随着社会经济的发展、城市化进程的加速及人们生活水平的不断提高,越来越多的宠物走进了人们的家庭,在人类社会生活中发挥了积极作用。但同时,宠物也是人兽共患病的重要传染源和传播媒介。与人类关系最为密切的犬、猫在人兽共患病的防控中具有重要的意义。在已报道的200多种主要的人兽共患病中,与宠物犬、猫有直接或间接关系的有70余种。随着宠物犬猫数量的大幅攀升和宠物业的飞速发展,我国人与犬猫共患病可能会出现逐步高发的趋势,疫病防控工作面临着许多问题。为了完善宠物管理制度,建立有效的防疫监督体系,对人与犬猫共患病实行有效的防控,本文就完善法律法规、形成综合管理机制,加强卫生监督、强化无害化处理、培养专业人才以及广泛开展宣传教育等6个方面提出了相关建议。  相似文献

Evolution and development are both lineage processes but are often conceptualized as occurring by different and mutually exclusive mechanisms. It is conventionally asserted that evolution occurs via the random generation of diversity and the subsequent survival of those that pass selection. On the other hand, development is too often presented as proceeding via the unfolding of a deterministic program encoded in the DNA sequence. In biology, universal generalizations are rare and dogmas are often wrong for particular cases. Deterministic mechanisms contribute some of the new DNA sequences that subsequently become substrates for natural selection. Conversely, stochastic and selective mechanisms are intrinsic to development, and also to maintenance of the immune, and possibly, nervous systems. Cancer appears to be another process that straddles distinctions between evolutionary and developmental modes of hereditary change and stabilization. DNA sequence changes are an essential feature of many cancers, but there are also aspects of the disease similar to developmental lineage gone awry. The literature suggests that the cellular changes that give rise to cancer occur by mechanisms commonly associated with both evolutionary and developmental lineage pathways.  相似文献

Mammalian transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are likely due to the propagation of an abnormal form of a constitutive protein instead of traditional genetic material (nucleic acids). Such infectious proteins, which are termed prions, exist in yeast. They are at the origin of a number of phenotypes that are inherited in a non-Mendelian manner. These prions are very useful to dissect the molecular events at the origin of this structure-based inheritance. The properties of mammalian and yeast prions are presented and compared. This review highlights a number of similarities and differences.  相似文献

An epithelium is important for integrity, homeostasis, communication and co-ordination, and its development must have been a fundamental step in the evolution of modern metazoan body plans. Sponges are metazoans that are often said to lack a true epithelium. We assess the properties of epithelia, and review the history of studies on sponge epithelia, focusing on their homology to bilaterian epithelia, their ultrastructure, and on their ability to seal. Electron micrographs show that adherens-type junctions are present in sponges but they can appear much slighter than equivalent junctions in other metazoans. Fine septae are seen in junctions of all sponge groups, but distinct septate junctions are only known from Calcarea. Similarly, all sponges can have collagenous sheets underlying their epithelia, but only homoscleromorphs are established to have a distinct basal lamina. The presence of most, but not all, gene families known to be involved in epithelial development and function also suggests that sponge epithelia function like, and are homologous to, bilaterian epithelia. However, physiological evidence that sponge epithelia regulate their internal environment is so far lacking. Given that up to six differentiated epithelia can be recognized in sponges, distinct physiological roles are expected. Recognition that sponges have epithelia challenges the perception that sponges are only loose associations of cells, and helps to relate the biology and physiology of the body plan of the adult sponge to the biology of other metazoans.  相似文献

The distribution of flavonoids, isoflavonoids, and their conjugates in developing soybean (Glycine max L.) seedling organs and in root and seed exudates has been examined. Conjugates of the isoflavones daidzein and genistein are major metabolites in all embryonic organs within the dry seed and in seedling roots, hypocotyl, and cotyledon tissues at all times after germination. Primary leaf tissues undergo a programmed shift from isoflavonoid to flavonoid metabolism 3 days after germination and become largely predominated by glycosides of the flavonols kampferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin by 5 days. Cotyledons contain relatively constant and very high levels of conjugates of both daidzein and genistein. Hypocotyl tissues contain a third unidentified compound, P19.3, also present in multiple conjugated forms. Conjugates of daidzein, genistein, and P19.3 are at their highest levels in the hypocotyl hook and fall off progressively down the hypocotyl. These isoflavones also undergo a programmed and dramatic decrease between 2 and 4 days in the hypocotyl hook. All root sections are predominated by daidzein and its conjugates, particularly in the root tip, where they reach the highest levels in the seedling. Light has a pronounced effect on the distribution of the isoflavones; in the dark, isoflavone levels in the root tips are greatly reduced, while those in the cotyledons are higher. Finally, the conjugates of daidzein and genistein and several unidentified aromatic metabolites are selectively excreted into root and seed exudates. Analysis of seed exudates suggests that this is a continuous, but saturable event.  相似文献

The discovery of methanogenic bacteria as endosymbionts of free-living anaerobic protozoa opened new fields of research in microbial ecology, cell physiology and molecular biology. Recent information from 16S rRNA sequence studies has shown in three cases that endosymbiotic methanogenic bacteria differ from free-living species. Frequently, endosymbiotic methanogens are localized in anaerobic protozoa near hydrogenosomes - organelles that produce H2, C02 and acetate, all of which are substrates for methanogenesis. Hydrogenosomes are also present in anaerobic fungi. The current view is that the organelles are endosymbllont-derived and were probably acquired on several distinct occasions during evolution.  相似文献

There are significant differences in mean pollen mother cell chiasma frequencies between populations within Lolium perenne, L. multiflorum and Festuca pratensis. The differences are genotypically controlled. With low chiasma frequencies the chiasmata are distally located. With increasing chiasma frequency the frequency of chiasmata in interstitial segments increases. Shorter lived populations have higher chiasma frequencies than the more perennial. — The higher the chiasma frequency of a population the lower the phenotypic and genetic variance for characters under polygenic control, such as flowering time, and the less effective also is the response to selection for such characters. These observations are interpreted on the premise that high chiasma frequencies are instrumental in the breaking up of supergene sequences in interstitial chromosome segments.  相似文献

This paper contains a brief comparative analysis of some philosophical and scientific discourses on human and animal health and welfare, focusing mainly on the welfare of sentient animals. The paper sets forth two kinds of proposals for the analysis of animal welfare which do not appear in the contemporary philosophical discussion of human welfare, viz. the coping theory of welfare and the theory of welfare in terms of natural behaviour. These proposals are scrutinized in the light of some similar theories dealing with human health and quality of life. My conclusion is that the coping theory and the natural behaviour theory are not in themselves adequate for the characterization of welfare, either for humans or for sentient animals. I contend, finally, that, in the light of the previous discussion, there are good arguments for a particular set of analyses of both animal and human welfare, viz. the ones that are based on the notions of preference satisfaction and positive subjective experiences.  相似文献

BackgroundMidkine (MDK) and pleiotrophin (PTN) are heparin-binding growth factors that, in rodents, are highly expressed in early life and decrease to undetectable levels by adulthood. The potential roles of MDK and PTN in human growth and development are not completely elucidated.ConclusionThe concentration of MDK but not that of PTN declined with gestational age. Both MDK and PTN concentrations were found to be lower in pregnancies that were complicated by chorioamnionitis at term, raising the possibility that these growth factors might be useful as markers for infection.  相似文献

New data are presented on the homology between winter hibernation and hypobiosis in poikilotherms, as well as one of the resting forms of the primary sleep in vertebrates. Different stages of formation of a cycle "awakefulness-sleep" in evolution of vertebrates are discussed. On the basis of universal behavioural, somato-vegetative, neurophysiological, neurochemical correlates of resting forms, hypobiosis and winter hibernation, a discussion is made of the problem of genetic fixation in the genotype and phenotype of heterothermic mammals (hibernating ones) of those characters which are typical of the sleep in homoiothermic and poikilothermic vertebrates.  相似文献

Isoprostanes are prostaglandin-like bioactive molecules generated via nonenzymatic peroxidation of lipid membrane-derived arachidonic acid by free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Their cognate receptors, biological actions, and signaling pathways are poorly understood. Aside from being sensitive and specific biomarkers of oxidative stress, E- and F-ring isoprostanes have important biological functions and likely mediate many of the disease-related pathological changes for which they are used as indicators. The biochemical pathways involved in isoprostane formation, their pathogenetic relevance to adult disease states, and their biological function are addressed. Developmentally, plasma and tissue content data show that isoprostane levels are highest during fetal and early neonatal life, when compared with adults. As such, the available data suggesting that isoprostanes play an important biological role, as well as possibly actively participate in the regulation of pulmonary vascular tone and the transition from fetal to postnatal life, are here reviewed. Lastly, the association between isoprostanes and certain neonatal clinical conditions is addressed. Although its existence has been recognized for almost 20 years, little is known about the critical importance of isoprostanes during fetal life and immediate neonatal period. This review is an attempt to bridge this knowledge gap.  相似文献

Studies of spatial learning and memory of birds in radial maze are reviewed. The radial maze variants (standard, giant and open-field analog) are described; procedural problems of bird testing are discussed. Radial maze task performance of birds is compared with that of laboratory rats as a well-studied standard. Specific features of spatial learning in various taxonomic avian groups (pigeon, tits, corvids, chickens and others) are considered. The results of spatial memory studies in closely-related species with different ecology (food storing behavior, degree of caching specialization) and experiments with migrant birds and homing pigeons are discussed.  相似文献

The roles of glia and polyamines (PA) in brain function and dysfunction are highlighted in this review. We emphasize that PA accumulation preferentially in glia, but not in neurons, is clearly evolutionarily determined; it is found throughout the brain, retina, peripheral nervous system, and in glial-neuronal co-cultures of multiple species, including man. This phenomenon raises key questions: (i) What are the mechanisms that underlie such uneven distribution, accumulation and release from glia? (ii) What are the consequences of PA fluxes within the brain on neuronal function? (iii) What are the roles of PAs in brain disorders and diseases? This review includes suggestions on the roles of PAs, such as putrescine (PT), spermidine (SPD), spermine (SPM) and their derivatives as novel glio-transmitters in brain since PA affect many neuronal and glial receptors, channels and transporters. Polyamines hitherto have been neglected, although it is evident that these molecules are key elements for normal brain function and their metabolic disorders, apparently, cause the development of many pathological syndromes and diseases. The study of endogenous PA allows one to put forward the basic principles of scientific research on glio-neuronal interactions and clinical therapies, which are based on the exclusivity of glial cells in terms of accumulation of PA and PA-dependent functions.  相似文献

Sertoli cell differentiation occurs in vitro, even when testicular morphogenesis is inhibited by addition of serum to the culture medium (Magre, S. and A. Jost: Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 81, 7831-7834 (1984]. Using indirect immunohistochemical technique, we have studied the expression of fibronectin and laminin in gonads lacking testicular morphogenesis, as compared to in vivo controls and gonads cultured in synthetic medium. In undifferentiated gonads in vivo, fibronectin and laminin are distributed uniformly in the blastema. If testicular differentiation occurs in vivo, laminin is detected only in the basement membranes; when it occurs in vitro, laminin is found both in the basement membranes and among the stromal tissue. In gonads without seminiferous cords (cultured in serum-supplemented medium), fibronectin and laminin are both present, they are uniformly distributed among the gonadal cells.  相似文献

Telomeres protect the chromosome ends from unscheduled DNA repair and degradation. Telomeres are heterochromatic domains composed of repetitive DNA (TTAGGG repeats) bound to an array of specialized proteins. The length of telomere repeats and the integrity of telomere-binding proteins are both important for telomere protection. Furthermore, telomere length and integrity are regulated by a number of epigenetic modifications, thus pointing to higher order control of telomere function. In this regard, we have recently discovered that telomeres are transcribed generating long, non-coding RNAs, which remain associated with the telomeric chromatin and are likely to have important roles in telomere regulation. In the past, we showed that telomere length and the catalytic component of telomerase, Tert, are critical determinants for the mobilization of stem cells. These effects of telomerase and telomere length on stem cell behaviour anticipate the premature ageing and cancer phenotypes of telomerase mutant mice. Recently, we have demonstrated the anti-ageing activity of telomerase by forcing telomerase expression in mice with augmented cancer resistance. Shelterin is the major protein complex bound to mammalian telomeres; however, its potential relevance for cancer and ageing remained unaddressed to date. To this end, we have generated mice conditionally deleted for the shelterin proteins TRF1, TPP1 and Rap1. The study of these mice demonstrates that telomere dysfunction, even if telomeres are of a normal length, is sufficient to produce premature tissue degeneration, acquisition of chromosomal aberrations and initiation of neoplastic lesions. These new mouse models, together with the telomerase-deficient mouse model, are valuable tools for understanding human pathologies produced by telomere dysfunction.  相似文献
