The effects of ecosystem engineers can be mediated by direct and indirect interactions. For suspension-feeding bivalves that contribute to benthic-pelagic coupling, indirect effects have been linked to hydrodynamics; however, the influence of these ecosystem engineers may also operate through interactions with surrounding sediments, microphytes and macrofauna that, in turn, affect nutrient and oxygen fluxes. This study investigated the indirect effects of an epibenthic suspension-feeding bivalve (Atrina zelandica) on ammonium and nitrate-nitrite effluxes from the sediment, and oxygen consumption in the overlying waters, under dark conditions, at two sites with different environmental characteristics. Location-dependent effects were observed in the relative strength of the effect of Atrina on microphyte and macrofaunal abundance. The difference between the strength of the effect of Atrina on macrofauna between sites was not driven by a single species or type of species; rather all the species decreasing in abundance away from Atrina were small species that utilised the sediment water interface. Location-dependent effects were also observed in the relative strength of the effect of microphyte and macrofaunal abundance on oxygen and nutrient fluxes. While microphytes were an important consumer of oxygen at one site, at the other site, small infaunal macrofauna were important. Similarly, the strength of the effect of surrounding macrofauna on ammonium efflux varied between sites. These findings demonstrate the importance of natural history and species functions for understanding complex responses. They suggest that indirect effects by key benthic macrofaunal species in marine systems can also be important to benthic-pelagic coupling. In particular, while key species are often large, excretion and respiration of smaller macrofauna can be important to the exchange of nutrients near the seafloor and oxygen consumption in the benthic boundary layer.  相似文献

Suspension-feeders are discriminate feeders, selecting prey by size, shape and food quality, this discriminate feeding behaviour has important consequences for the modelling of growth rates, population dynamics and ecosystem change. When given natural seston, the large pinnid bivalve Atrina zelandica (Gray), fed on picophytoplankton (< 2 μm), larger phytoplankton (2-270 μm) and microzooplankton, but preferentially selected algal species within the 2-20 μm size fraction. Selection for ingestion was based on food quality, with morphotype, carbon content and potential toxicity also being important. Microzooplankton were readily ingested and represented 48% of the available diet in terms of carbon indicating they play an important role in the diet of Atrina. Mussels were subsequently fed a selected cultured algal diet consisting of three different types of 2-20 μm sized phytoplankton to assess differences in prey selection and grazing efficiency. When high inorganic suspended sediment concentrations of 500 mg/l were added in addition to the cultured algal diet this caused Atrina to increase filtration and rejection rates and reduced the efficiency of Atrina to select food in all cases. More importantly, there were changes in the species preferentially selected for ingestion. Our results suggest that as well as reducing feeding efficiency increased suspended sediment concentrations may affect prey selection and therefore have consequences for benthic-pelagic coupling beyond that of reduced removal and deposition rates.  相似文献

Eutrophic-driven changes in the composition of near-bottom seston and surface sediment potentially affect food resources and habitat of commercially important bivalves like quahogs, Mercenaria mercenaria, and softshell clams, Mya arenaria. To define how land-derived nitrogen loads and resulting eutrophication affect bivalves, we compared estuarine features to growth and survival of clams across estuaries receiving different N loads. The major effects of nitrogen enrichment on near-bottom seston and surface sediment were to (1) increase microalgal concentrations and reduce carbon to nitrogen ratios, increasing quantity and quality of available foods, and (2) reduce oxygen content in sediments, potentially reducing habitat quality. Shell growth of juvenile and native clams increased with increasing food supply, driven by N enrichment. Growth of soft tissue followed growth of shell, and %N content of soft tissue increased across N loads, providing direct evidence of a link between N loads and growth responses in clams. In some locations, low salinity limited growth and low oxygen concentrations may have reduced survival. Despite these factors, our data indicate the major effect of N enrichment on clams was increased secondary production in terms of shell and soft tissue growth.  相似文献

Filter-feeding bivalves are well adapted to a changing food environment, capable of a highly selective feeding strategy. This feeding behaviour results in the rejection of unwanted material as pseudofeces. To assess the importance of a selective feeding behaviour performed by filter-feeding bivalves in influencing amounts of metal accumulated by bivalves, we applied a kinetic model of metal accumulation modified to incorporate feeding behaviour defined as (1) the sorting efficiency (SEF; the ability of the mussel to select organic matter (OM) over inorganic matter (IM) from suspended particulate matter (SPM) cleared from the water column) and (2) rate of rejection of unwanted SPM as pseudofeces (PF). Predicted mussel Cd concentrations (Cdmuss) were compared with Cdmuss predicted without incorporating feeding behaviour as well as to observed Cdmuss. SEF was important at an SPM quality greater than 10% OM; PF production was important at an SPM quantity greater than 3.5 mg l−1 with the influence of PF production on predicted Cdmuss increasing with increasing SPM concentration. Our results suggest that a selective feeding behaviour and the generation of pseudofeces could influence amounts of metal ingested, especially under conditions where SPM quality and quantity are highly variable. Under conditions of high SPM, the influence of SEF and PF production on final Cdmuss should be taken into consideration.  相似文献

Within the framework of an investigation into the carrying capacity of the Bay of Marennes-Oléron (France) for bivalve culture, thein situ uptake of suspended particulate material by oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and mussels (Mytilus edulis) was determined in experiments with benthic ecosystem tunnels. Very high fluctuations in seston quantity and quality were observed within and between tidal cycles. The percentage of organic carbon was inversely related to seston quantity at low concentrations. Organic carbon was diluted by resuspension of material rich in inorganic matter. At high seston concentrations a constant level of about 2% organic carbon was found. The C/N ratio was relatively constant throughout the seasons and fairly low (6.5 to 8.4). Owing to the presence of bivalves large fluxes of suspended particulate material were observed in thein situ measurements. Selective retention of organic carbon or nitrogen could not be demonstrated. Clearance rates based on chlorophyll uptake were within a normal range compared to other studies. A large contribution to the food of the bivalves seemed to be formed by resuspended microphytobenthos. Judged by the low C/N ratio, the food was of good quality. Although its quantity was variable by dilution, it may support largely the carrying capacity of the Bay of Marennes-Oléron for the cultivation of bivalves. We measured changes in the feeding rate and food absorption efficiency of two suspension feeding bivalves, cross-trasplanted between habitats with special emphasis on their capacity for differential absorption of biochemical components from their food supply. Mulinia edulis were moved from the intertidal zone to the subtidal zone, and Mytilus chilensis from the subtidal to the intertidal zone for a period of 7 days, and then compared with animal that had not been transplanted. Experimentally prepared diets similar to those available in the two different environments were offered to the bivalves, and their rates of feeding and differential uptake of biochemical components were determined and statistically compared. The two species did not achieve complete acclimation of their feeding behaviour during the transplant period since the highest ingestion rates for biochemical components occurred under dietary conditions that reflected their habitats of origin. Absorption efficiency showed greater acclimation than the other physiological parameters measured, indicating the capacity of these species to modulate their enzymatic-digestive activity depending on food composition. We conclude that both Mytilus and Mulinia have a certain degree of physiological plasticity in their feeding behaviour and assimilatory balance of biochemical components, being greater in Mytilus. When both species encounter ambient food conditions characteristic of their normal habitats, they show maximum values of food absorption, while under conditions where their typical diets are exchanged (Mytilus in intertidal and Mulinia in subtidal), the energy absorbed declines in each, but in ways very different between the two species. Thus, Mytilus exposed to high concentrations of low quality seston reduced the energy absorbed by 31.7% compared to its normal habitat, while Mulinia exposed to low concentrations of high-quality food reduced their energy absorption by 64%.  相似文献

Many studies on the biology of bivalves have focused on identifying the importance of various environmental factors in regulating feeding behaviour in order to predict ingestion and growth responses in a variety of habitats. When taking into consideration the diversity of studies undertaken and the variety of methodologies employed, it is perhaps not surprising that there have been inconsistencies in both interspecific and intraspecific comparisons. In order to compare and contrast the way in which feeding activities of a mussel species (Mytilus edulis) and a scallop species (Placopecten magellanicus) respond to environmental factors and seston characteristics, we exposed both species simultaneously to a fluctuating assemblage of natural particles found in their local environment. Similar sizes of mussels (40-73 mm) and scallops (40-88 mm) were held in flow through chambers at two different sites in Atlantic Canada on four separate occasions, during which environmental conditions, including seston characteristics, were monitored and individual clearance rates were measured. Because the same individuals were measured over time, repeated-measures statistical procedures were used to analyze the data. Results indicate that weight standardized clearance rates of mussels were significantly higher than those of scallops only at the highest concentration tested (12.8 mg l− 1), which translates into almost 3 times more material being filtered. Scallops appeared to respond to fluctuations in environment parameters and suspended food particles more consistently than mussels. These data suggest that the feeding behaviour of these two species is mediated differently by the same environmental parameters. Our study also demonstrates the importance of selecting appropriate statistical tests (e.g., repeated measures) for the analyses of data obtained from repeated sampling of the same individuals over time, and the need to consider species-specific feeding responses when developing models that predict the influence of bivalve feeding on ecosystem function.  相似文献

The clearance rates (CR in l g−1 h−1) and net absorption efficiencies (AE) of three co-occurring mytilid species were estimated to determine the effects of variation in ambient seston quantity (total particulate matter, TPM, mg l−1) and quality (particulate organic matter, POM, mg l−1; percent organic matter, PCOM=POM/TPM) on these physiological functions. CRS estimates were significantly different among the species (Mytilus galloprovincialis>Perna canaliculus=Aulacomya maoriana), but were not correlated with differences in species-dependent mean body size (P. canaliculus>M. galloprovincialis>A. maoriana). AE estimates were independent of mean body weight, and did not differ among the species. For all three species, CR responded in a simple linear manner to seston organic content, either in terms of POM (for A. maoriana and M. galloprovincialis), or PCOM (for P. canaliculus). The AE response, although also of a simple linear type, was species-dependent and involved interactions of two or three seston components: TPM, POM and PCOM for A. maoriana; POM and PCOM for M. galloprovincialis; and TPM and PCOM for P. canaliculus. For all three species, seston variation explained 15-20% of the variation in CR and 52-59% of the variation in AE. Comparisons among the species indicated that two very different responses to variation in seston quantity and quality exist. First, significant differences in CR result from species-dependent differences in the magnitude of the response to seston variation. Second, species-dependent responses to variation in seston variation resulted in the similarity of the AE responses. Thus, the three species appear to have evolved different strategies for dealing with seston variation, but with the end result that their AE responses do not differ. Finally, no evidence was found of a negative association between CR and AE for any of the three species, suggesting that under the seston conditions experienced in this work, these species do not have the physiological compensatory capacity to reduce CR in order to increase AE. The importance of a comparative (i.e., multi-species) approach utilising ambient seston is emphasised by the findings of this research if we are to understand better the feeding and digestive physiologies of suspension-feeding organisms such as mussels.  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was conducted, to examine how feeding, siphon activity and movement behaviours of a tellinid bivalve, Macomona liliana (Iredale, 1915), were affected by thin surface layers of mud (1–4 mm) and the incorporation of mud into surface (0–2 cm) sediment. Time-lapse photography and porewater pressure sensors were used to characterise changes in behaviour before and after mud addition. Mud addition modified the sediment matrix which had an immediate effect on M. liliana behaviour; significantly affecting the rates of feeding and the degree of porewater pressurisation during feeding events. Surface activity indicated maintenance and clearance of established burrow structures and increased ventilation. Ultimately, subtle modifications in behaviour and sediment hydraulic conductivity may have consequences for nutrient exchange and benthic-pelagic coupling. Our results emphasise the need to consider the impacts of low level stressors when they affect the behaviour of structurally important species.  相似文献

To establish if nutrients limit the growth of bivalves requires information not only on the quality of food available, but also the animals' feeding behaviour and endogenous metabolic demands. We hypothesized that growth of the Sydney rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) would vary in response to seasonal changes in food quality rather than quantity. We also predicted that the oysters would show feeding preferences for nitrogen over carbon, and this behaviour would result in carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios for ingested and absorbed matter that would be lower than the C/N of both the seston and the oysters' estimated metabolic maintenance requirements. The experiments were done in two phases under natural conditions. In phase 1, feeding behaviour was assessed on a single occasion and the results used to pose hypotheses for testing in phase 2, which included measurements made on three occasions encompassing autumn, winter and spring conditions. Growth rates varied with changes in ambient food quality and not with the concentration of total suspended matter. Feeding behaviour responded to food quality and, in most cases, resulted in nitrogen enrichment. For example, when nitrogen was potentially limiting to growth and/or maintenance, due to high food C/N (July) or high nitrogen demand (March), pre-ingestive selection ensured nitrogen enrichment of ingested matter and C/N ratios of ingested matter which were below the maintenance requirement. However, in November, when endogenous demands indicated an increased requirement for carbon, feeding behaviour resulted in carbon enrichment, an increase in carbon conversion efficiency, and ingested C/N ratios greater than the maintenance requirement. The results support the assertion of variable feeding physiology in oysters, responsive to both exogenous (seasonal differences in carbon and nitrogen availability) and endogenous (cycles of reproduction and growth) factors.  相似文献

Along a west-to-east axis spanning the Galicia Bank region (Iberian margin) and the Mediterranean basin, a reduction in surface primary productivity and in seafloor flux of particulate organic carbon was mirrored in the in situ organic matter quantity and quality within the underlying deep-sea sediments at different water depths (1200, 1900 and 3000 m). Nematode standing stock (abundance and biomass) and genus and trophic composition were investigated to evaluate downward benthic-pelagic coupling. The longitudinal decline in seafloor particulate organic carbon flux was reflected by a reduction in benthic phytopigment concentrations and nematode standing stock. An exception was the station sampled at the Galicia Bank seamount, where despite the maximal particulate organic carbon flux estimate, we observed reduced pigment levels and nematode standing stock. The strong hydrodynamic forcing at this station was believed to be the main cause of the local decoupling between pelagic and benthic processes. Besides a longitudinal cline in nematode standing stock, we noticed a west-to-east gradient in nematode genus and feeding type composition (owing to an increasing importance of predatory/scavenging nematodes with longitude) governed by potential proxies for food availability (percentage of nitrogen, organic carbon, and total organic matter). Within-station variability in generic composition was elevated in sediments with lower phytopigment concentrations. Standing stock appeared to be regulated by sedimentation rates and benthic environmental variables, whereas genus composition covaried only with benthic environmental variables. The coupling between deep-sea nematode assemblages and surface water processes evidenced in the present study suggests that it is likely that climate change will affect the composition and function of deep-sea nematodes.  相似文献

The open exposed Laholm Bay in the Kattegat is eutrophicated through riverine input, mainly of N. The benthic macrofauna down to 10 m depth (60 km2) is dominated by the suspension-feeding bivalves Cardium edule and Mya arenaria. To estimate the seasonal and annual consumption of seston by the suspension-feeders in Laholm Bay, we carried out three sets of observations. (1) The abundance and biomass of the macrofauna in this depth interval were assessed along eight transects. (2) The secondary production of the two bivalves was estimated over a 10-month period in two sampling squares. (3) The filtration rate of C. edule was determined in natural seawater in laboratory experiments during different seasons. The bivalves can in theory filter all of the water volume down to 10 m in 3 days and, thus, make a significant impact on the phytoplankton concentration. In our study, however, they filtered only approximately half of their potential feeding capacity, perhaps because food availability was low due to low turnover close to the bottom or due to physical disturbance. The majority of the phytoplankton is exported from the bay. Bivalve abundance, biomass, production and growth rate were moderate and generally lower than in adjacent areas to the north. In autumn, the bivalves consumed >90% of the seston in comparison with net-zooplankton consumption. An energy-flow diagram for the bivalves is presented including estimates of bivalve N excretion and biodeposition.  相似文献

While spatial scale is increasingly incorporated into ecological experiments, the effect of temporal scale is explicitly investigated less frequently, despite the potential for temporal-scale dependent results. This study was designed to investigate the effect of variations in stress duration on responses, in a situation where stress duration is driven by natural storm events. Specifically, the utility of combining short-term laboratory and longer-term field transplant experiments in assessing the effect of increased suspended sediment concentrations on suspension-feeding bivalves (Austrovenus stutchburyi and Paphies australis) was tested. Short-term (2 days) feeding responses did not reflect feeding or biomass responses over slightly longer time-scales (8-14 days). Also, stronger biomass responses to suspended sediment concentrations were observed after three months in the field, than after 14 days in the laboratory. For unimodal responses, increased stress duration decreased the peak and shifted its location to lower suspended sediment levels. Using continuous measures of field suspended sediment concentrations, the study was able to determine the temporal scale of variability most related to the response. With such information, field surveys and transplants together make a useful tool, preventing co-occurring factors and changes in the duration and intensity of the factors of interest from obscuring results.  相似文献

A number of studies have shown that temperature-dependent viscosity of the ambient water controls or strongly affects bio-mechanical activity such as beat frequency of water-pumping cilia in mussels and ascidians, swimming velocity of sperm cells, ciliates and small (micro- and meso-scale) aquatic organisms using cilia or small appendages for propulsion. Here we summarize results from the literature and from own studies on bio-mechanical activities in response to changing temperature or manipulated viscosity at constant temperature, both having the same change in kinematic viscosity. The survey is used to assess to what extent the response is purely physical/mechanical or biological. We argue that a power-law dependence of bio-mechanical activity (a) on kinematic viscosity (ν), i.e. a ∝ νm, should be applied to available data. Based on a general close matching of the response data to power-law regressions for viscosity manipulation (by means of an additive) and/or temperature we suggest that viscosity and not biological mechanisms often control the response. This knowledge enhances our basic understanding of the effect of temperature not only on the swimming and feeding behaviour of small aquatic organisms, but also on larger ciliary suspension-feeding bivalves and ascidians.  相似文献

To date, knowledge of the qualitative particle selection sites and conditions in the widely-distributed bivalve Crassostrea gigas is incomplete, having focussed either on heterogeneous particles, or on particles intentionally too large to enter the gill principal filament tracts. We used endoscope-directed sampling and the intact diatom-empty, cleaned frustule approach to unambiguously establish qualitative selection sites and the influence of seston quality (varying proportions of intact diatoms and empty, cleaned frustules) and quantity (particle loads) on the degree of qualitative selection. Normally-feeding oysters were presented test mixtures of the naturally-occurring Actinoptychus senarius (small enough to enter the gill principal filaments), and the potential selection sites (gill: dorsal and ventral collecting tracts; labial palps: anteriorly-deposited pseudofaeces), were sampled for comparison with the proportions and concentrations of the ambient medium. Qualitative selection was demonstrated at both the gills and labial palps. Gill selection efficiency was shown to be directly proportional to seston quality and quantity, using a technique independant of pseudofeces mucus content. The oyster gill is thus able to increase ingested food quality when environmental food quality is low and / or when seston concentrations are high, which is typical of oyster habitats. Palp selection efficiency was directly proportional to seston quality, but at the highest concentration tested, no qualitative selection was observed on the labial palps, probably due to overload on these smaller organs. The partial functional redundancy of these key processing organs in heterorhabdic species such as oysters and scallops may enhance their success in high-turbidity habitats.  相似文献

A burrow previously assigned to the ichnotaxon Palaeophycus insignis is redescribed, and a new ichnotaxon Olongichnus solodukhoi n. igen. n. isp is erected for this flattened, slightly curved, multi-oriented, smooth burrow that has a thick lining with internal and external very fine-grained mucuous layers. It shows subrectangular to oblong form in cross section. O. solodukhoi is collected from the lowermost part of the Member D (Seryi Kamen Member, Pechishchi Beds) of the late Kazanian (middle Permian) stratotype section (East European Platform). It occurs in yellowish grey dolostone formed within open shallow-marine environments. O. solodukhoi records combined feeding and dwelling behaviours of a suspension-feeding organism. It could be produced by burrowing organisms with a simple flattened morphology, such as flatworms or polychaetes; however, we favour elongate and ultra-elongate bivalves as the potential tracemakers of the reported burrows.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the biochemistry of lake seston   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
1. The quantity of seston was measured and the elemental carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus (C, N, P) and biochemical composition (carbohydrate, protein, lipid) of the < 53 μm size fraction in three temperate lakes during one year was analysed. The lakes differed in nutrient concentration and were characterized as oligotrophic, mesotrophic and eutrophic. Linear regression analyses defined associations between seston composition and either lake trophic status, depth or season. 2. The concentration of particulate organic seston was greatest during spring and autumn and lowest during the clear water period in early summer. Seasonal patterns in seston elemental and biochemical percentage composition (quality) were observed to be independent of differences in seston quantity. 3. Concentrations of seston C, N and P were high in most cases in the spring and autumn and low in summer. Concentrations of P were particularly high during late summer and early autumn in the metalimnion, perhaps because of recovery of P from anaerobic sediments and hypolimnetic waters. Because seston C and N did not increase as markedly as P, C : P and N : P ratios both declined in the autumn. Primary production was thought to be co-limited by N and P in all three of these lakes; however, the data suggested that N might be more important as a major limiting nutrient in the eutrophic lake as the metalimnion increased in depth in late summer and autumn. 4. Concentrations of protein, carbohydrate, polar lipid and triglyceride generally increased with lake type as expected (greatest in the eutrophic lake), but showed no relationship with water depth. As the year progressed, no significant changes were measured in protein and carbohydrate concentrations; however, the concentration of polar lipid decreased and triglyceride increased significantly with time of year. 5. The biochemical composition of seston varied during the year and among lakes; for example, in Lake Waynewood the proportion of protein composing the seston (percentage protein by weight) varied from < 10% to > 40%. No statistically significant patterns in the percentage protein or carbohydrate were found. However, the proportion of seston comprised of triglyceride decreased with lake type and increased during the year; whereas the proportion of seston as polar lipid increased with lake type and decreased during the year. Triglyceride comprised most of the lipid. Both protein : lipid and protein : carbohydrate ratios tended to be greatest in summer and lowest in the spring and autumn. 6. Relationships between samples and biochemical composition analysed by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (Canoco) indicated similar patterns in seasonal changes in seston biochemistry for the three lakes, with samples separated primarily by vectors for lake type (oligotrophic to eutrophic) and the percentage polar lipid (proportion of total lipid) and secondarily by vectors for date and water depth (epilimnion or metalimnion). 7. These seasonal biochemical changes in the seston food base were compared with biochemical changes known to occur in algae grown under N-or P-limited conditions in the laboratory, and the resultant quality of this algal food for suspension-feeding consumers (zooplankton). It was concluded that zooplankton were likely to be physiologically challenged by these distinct seasonal shifts in the quality of lake seston.  相似文献

Sabellaria alveolata is a tube-building gregarious polychaete that constructs large biogenic reefs. In macrotidal shellfish ecosystems, this species competes for food with cultivated suspension-feeders. The suspension-feeding activity and clearance rate of S. alveolata were investigated in response to changes in seston concentration. A flow-through system was designed to study 225 cm2 reef blocks with more than 500 individuals. The experimental conditions were characterized by increasing concentrations of suspended particulate matter ranging from 6.5 to 153.8 mg L1, while the organic content of the diet (microalgae Skeletonema costatum) decreased inversely from 49 to 9%, to mimic the dilution of organic matter by inorganic particles, characteristic of tidal resuspension. We showed that the clearance rate exponentially decreased in relation to an increase in SPM concentration. Clearance rate was estimated at 5.3 10− 3 L h− 1 or 0.93 L h− 1 g− 1 (dry weight) for the lowest seston concentration (SPM = 6.5 mg L− 1) and reached the asymptote at CR = 1.97 10− 3 L h− 1 or 0.35 L h− 1 g− 1 (dry weight) when SPM exceeded 45 mg L− 1. Using picture analyses of polychaete movements, we showed that, paradoxically, an increase in SPM concentration did not adversely affect the feeding activity of S. alveolata since the number of filtering individuals remained stable from SPM = 6.5 to 55.5 mg L− 1. These values were applied at the scale of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (France) to demonstrate that the filtration pressure of large populations of wild suspension-feeders should not be underestimated when the carrying capacity has to be assessed in the context of increasing bivalve cultures.  相似文献

Climate extremes, such as heatwaves, are expected to become more intense and of longer duration in the near future. These climatic conditions may have a significant impact on the prospects of establishing a new aquaculture industry for the endemic New Zealand geoduck, Panopea zelandica. This study focused on characterising animal behaviour, haemocytes , and heat shock protein (HSP70 & HSP90) mRNA expression following exposure to elevated temperatures, such as those encountered during marine heatwaves around 20 °C and an extreme scenario of 25 °C, contrasted to an ambient temperature of 17 °C. After 24 h of heat challenge, P. zelandica were found to be significantly influenced by the thermal changes, as there were differences recorded in all the responses examined. With increasing temperatures, juvenile geoduck were observed to fully emerge from the sediment a behaviour that has not previously been quantified nor associated with stress in this species. The ability of P. zelandica juveniles to re-bury still warrants further investigation, as adults are unable to do so. Haemocyte analyses revealed an increase in the abundance of granulocytes, cellular aggregations, and size of these aggregations at the highest temperature exposure. Increased expression of the hsp70 gene in the haemolymph after exposure at 25 °C for 24 h was detected and attributed to attempts to mitigate protein denaturation caused by thermal stress. The inter-individual variability in the response of heat shock proteins recorded could aid in future selective breeding programs if it is reflected in net thermotolerance. P. zelandica shows great potential for growing in subtidal habitats around New Zealand, and this study highlights the importance of temperature considerations when selecting potential farm and reseeding locations.  相似文献

The Chinese pond mussel (Sinanodonta woodiana Lea, 1834) is a benthic filter-feeder that prefers soft-bottomed freshwater habitats and has successfully spread into both tropical and temperate water bodies outside its natural Southeast Asian range. Due to its preference for nutrient-rich waters with high levels of suspended food particles, the capacity of S. woodiana to influence natural seston concentrations is thought to be relatively low in comparison to that of other invasive bivalves. The experimental quantification of seston removal efficiency reported here demonstrates that S. woodiana is able to reduce seston loads to levels comparable to those by the control native freshwater mussel species Unio tumidus Philipsson, 1788. Moreover, increasing food depletion did not cause detectable changes in the filtration regime of S. woodiana, although the activity of native U. tumidus was significantly reduced. The seston clearance rate (volume of water cleared of particles per unit time) of S. woodiana averaged 9.3 ± 4.0 mL g?1 wet mass h?1, which corresponds to the total daily volume of water filtered being up to several hundreds to thousands L m?2 at the maximal S. woodiana population densities reported in the literature. The observed filtration capacity of S. woodiana and its current invasional spread into areas inhabited by endangered freshwater mussels call for more careful consideration of filter-feeding interactions with native mussels. The potential impacts of S. woodiana should be studied in more detail with respect to available food resources and long-term nutritional needs of native species and reflected in management strategies in the invaded range.  相似文献
