Macrorhaphis acuta were bred in the laboratory (25°C) and fed on larvae ofAscotis selenaria reciprocaria. The incubation period was 8.4 days and the mean hatch was 94.4%. There were 5 nymphal instars which occupied 3.3, 5.0, 5.6, 6.6 and 12.0 days, respectively, from the lst to the 5th. Each nymph consumed an average of 22.8 host larvae to complete development. Adults had a mean longevity of 74.9 days and each consumed an average of 67.5 host larvae. Significant reduction was noted in pupation of 5th instar host larvae sucked by adult predators for periods ranging from 4 to 10 mn. The food requirements of 3rd, 4th, and 5th instar nymphs fed on 3rd instar host larvae were also investigated. The conversion ratio varied with the weight of food consumed during the instar and later instars were more efficient than earlier ones. Predatory value did not vary significantly with successive instars.  相似文献

The reduviid Sycanus falleni Stal (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) is an important predatory insect in biological control pests in vegetable, soybean, corn and rice plants. It is omnivorous species and has a wide range of prey. The influence of fed on four different preys as Pieris rapae (Linnaeus), Spodoptera litura (Fabricius), Plutela xylostella (Linnaeus) and Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) on biological parameters, ability to eat prey and body weight of the nymph and adult of S. falleni were evaluated in laboratory conditions (26 ± 2 °C, 75 ± 5% RH and light:dark 14:10 h) in Vietnam. The biological parameters of reduviid S. falleni reared on the laboratory were determined by observing the development stage of egg, development stage of nymph, pre-oviposition period, life cycle, longevity of adult, number of eggs laid, sex ratio. The nymph and adults of reduviid S. falleni consumption the number of P. xylostella, P. rapae, S. litura and C. cephalonica larvae were different, and an adult female consumed more than an adult male while the body weight of the I and V nymphal instars, male and female adults of reduviid S. falleni wasn't significantly different (P < 0.01).  相似文献

Changes in biliverdin-binding cyanoprotein content in whole body and tissue extracts during development of nymphal and adult (non-diapause) bean bugs, Riptortus clavatus were analyzed by rocket immunoelectrophoresis (RIE). RIE using anti-CPegg serum can be used to determine the content of CP-A (Cp-1, 2 and 3) and CP-B (CP-4) separately. During the nymphal stage CP content of whole body changes cyclically in each instar. In the first nymphal instar, CPegg is the main CP which disappears during the first-second instar ecdysis. In nymphal bugs from the 2nd to 4th instars only CP-B (CP-4) is detected, and at the beginning of each instar the CP content is very low but increases toward the next ecdysis, after which CP decreases and disappears very rapidly. In the 5th nymphal instar, CP-B is the major CP but CP-A (CP-1, 2 and 3) is also detected. These changes in whole body CP content of 5th instar nymphs are observed in both females and males. The content of total CPs in the 5th instar nymph reaches about 1000 μg in the whole insect. During nymphal-adult ecdysis, nymphal CPs decrease and disappear at day 2 after emergence. In female adults CP-A (CP-1 only) increases rapidly after day 4 of adult emergence, while no CP is detected in male adults. In females CPs were detected only in the fat body, hemolymph and ovary. In the mid-5th-instar nymphs, CPs (CP-A and B) are mainly distributed in the hemolymph. CPs in the Hemolymph decrease during nymphal-adult ecdysis, whereas they increase in the fat body. CPs disappear from both the hemolymph and fat body by 2 days after ecdysis. Subsequently in the adult stage only CP-A increases again in the fat body and ovary. By tracer experiments using [35S]-methionine, the fat body was shown to be the site of CP synthesis. CP-A and B synthetic activity was detected in nymphal females whereas, only CP-A synthesis was observed in adult females, while no CP synthesis was seen in adult males.

Tetraphleps galchanoides Ghauri (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) nymphs were collected from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) Adelges tsugae Annand (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) infested Tsuga sp. in Baoxing, Sichuan, China. First and second stage nymphs collected from foliage shipped from China; were reared to adults and tested for feeding rates and host preferences. They were reared at 5, 8, 12, and 15 ± 1 °C from November to December, January to March, April, and May to June, respectively, in the quarantine laboratory at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. At 8 °C, development time was 15, 20, and 40 days for the N-III, IV, and V nymphal stages, respectively. Adult males lived 83 days with a range of 21–147 days. A single adult female lived for 21 days. At 5 °C, second stage T. galchanoides nymphs consumed 0.8 HWA nymphs per day, and 2.0 HWA nymphs per day at the N-V stage. At 8 °C, consumption of HWA nymphs ranged from 1.3 to 3.4 nymphs per day for the N-III to N-V stages, respectively. Adult T. galchanoides consumed more HWA eggs than HWA adults, pine bark adelgid (PBA) Pineus strobi (Hartig) (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) adults, and eggs in no-choice tests. In choice tests with HWA eggs and PBA eggs, more HWA eggs were eaten. Adult and nymph body measurements are presented for determination of nymphal instars.  相似文献

Summary The intact male nymph cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus DeGeer, was found to show mating-like behavior, that is, courtship-like behavior (CSLB) and copulation-like behavior (CPLB), in the 7th and 8th (last) instars. The 8th instar nymph exhibited less CSLB and CPLB than the adult but much more than the 7th instar nymph. The movement patterns of CSLB and CPLB were essentially the same as those of adults except for motor acts requiring the use of the genitalia. CSLB was short and often ceased spontaneously before it switched to CPLB. CPLB also ended earlier than in adults. The occurrence of CSLB and CPLB was almost zero the few days around ecdysis. The nymph was very sensitive to disturbance, so that he often stopped courtship for more than 30 min after stimulation. CSLB was similarly induced in the male nymph (8th instar) by pairing with a female adult, male adult, female nymph (8th) and male nymph (8th). The female nymph (8th) was observed to mount not only the male adult but also the male nymph (8th). A fixed time sexual refractoriness forming a basis of cyclical mating activity was not present after CPLB in the nymph. It appeared in association with the emergence of spermatophore protrusion behavior around day 3 after the imaginal molt. In fledglings, there were some transitions during the sexual maturation process, such as failures in hook hanging, spermatophore extrusion, and spermatophore transfer to the female. The decerebration experiments on nymphs and fresh adults agreed with behavioral observations. These results suggest that the development of mating behavior in the male cricket is a process of enhancement of basic motor patterns but not a process of addition of new movements by changes in pattern generation circuits in the central nervous system.Abbreviations CPLB copulation-like behavior - CPPT interval between copulation and spermatophore protrusion - CSCP interval between calling song and copulation - CSLB courtship-like behavior - CSS courtship song - PTCS interval between spermatophore protrusion and calling song - SPE spermatophore extrusion  相似文献

Abstract The predatory behavior and functional response of all larval stages and adults of Nephpis oculatus (Blatchley), a predacious coccinellid, on various egg densities of Bemisia argentgolii Bellows & Pemng, and prey preference of adult N. oculatus , were studied in the laboratory. Daily consumption of eggs of B. argentifolii by N. oculatus was evaluated at six different densities to obtain functional response curves for all active stages of the coccinellid. Bemisia argentifolii eggs were offered to N. oculatus on collard leaf disks in Petri dish arenas over a 24-h period at 26.7 ∀ 2°C: and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L: D) h. Linear relationship were observed between percentage prey consumed and prey density, with r 2 values between 0.82–0.99 for all stages except for the fourth instar that had a smaller r2 value (0.64). Functional response curves of prey consumption by N. oculatus against density of B. argentifolii eggs fitted the type II model of Holling's disc equation for all larval stages and both the male and female adults. Adult females consumed more prey than adult males. The maximum theoretical number of prey consumed per day increased with larval development. The fourth instar was the most effective larval predator, followed by the third instar, the second instar, and finally, the first instar. Based on the functional response parameters, a maximum of 321, 312, 237, 229, 73, and 34 B. argentifolii eggs could be attacked by an adult female, a fourth instar, an adult male, a third instar, a second instar, and a first instar of N. oculatus , respectively. Nephaspis oculatus adults strongly preferred collard to tomato, soybean, eggplant or sweet-potato for oviposition and foraging. Nephaspis oculatus did not deposit any eggs on soybean and tomato.  相似文献

The function of “cuticular hydrocarbons” (CHCs) in insects is to protect the body as well as chemical communication and recognition between species. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry were used to compare the composition of CHCs in eggs, all nymph instars, and male and female adults of the bean bug, Riptortus pedestris (Hemiptera: Alydidae). CHC carbon chain numbers of each developmental stage ranged from 14 to 19 in eggs to the fourth nymph and were 24 in the last nymph. CHCs' carbon chain numbers in male and female adults increased from 16 to 23 and 16 to 27 until 6 days of age, respectively. Major components consisted of n-nonacosane in the larval stages, which changed to n-hentriacontane, n-heptacosane and 13,17-;15,19-demethyltritriacontane in adults. The major component from eggs was not identified. The major component from newly emerged adults was n-heptacosane. CHCs in different developmental stages of the bean bug consisted of n-alkanes with saturated hydrocarbons (27–63%), followed by mono or di-methyl alkanes. However, the CHCs of newly emerged female and male adults consisted mostly of methyl-alkanes. The major constituents of CHCs in the developmental stages of R. pedestris were proportionally different but showed only slight differences in composition.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of sub-lethal high temperatures on the development and reproduction of the brown plant hopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål). When first instar nymphs were exposed at their ULT50 (41.8°C) mean development time to adult was increased in both males and females, from 15.2±0.3 and 18.2±0.3 days respectively in the control to 18.7±0.2 and 19±0.2 days in the treated insects. These differences in development arising from heat stress experienced in the first instar nymph did not persist into the adult stage (adult longevity of 23.5±1.1 and 24.4±1.1 days for treated males and females compared with 25.7±1.0 and 20.6±1.1 days in the control groups), although untreated males lived longer than untreated females. Total mean longevity was increased from 38.8±0.1 to 43.4±1.0 days in treated females, but male longevity was not affected (40.9±0.9 and 42.2±1.1 days respectively). When male and female first instar nymphs were exposed at their ULT50 of 41.8°C and allowed to mate on reaching adult, mean fecundity was reduced from 403.8±13.7 to 128.0±16.6 eggs per female in the treated insects. Following exposure of adult insects at their equivalent ULT50 (42.5°C), the three mating combinations of treated male x treated female, treated male x untreated female, and untreated male x treated female produced 169.3±14.7, 249.6±21.3 and 233.4±17.2 eggs per female respectively, all significantly lower than the control. Exposure of nymphs and adults at their respective ULT50 temperatures also significantly extended the time required for their progeny to complete egg development for all mating combinations compared with control. Overall, sub-lethal heat stress inhibited nymphal development, lowered fecundity and extended egg development time.  相似文献

We studied the prey stage preference and feeding behaviour of the first to third instar larvae and adult females ofOligota kashmirica benefica Naomi (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), a predator of the spider miteTetranychus urticae Koch (red form) (Acari: Tetranychidae), on leaves of the kudzu vine (Pueraria lobata (Wild.) Ohwi (Leguminosae)) under laboratory conditions. The number of mites eaten increased with the growth of predator larvae. Third instar larvae preyed on all stages of spider mite, whereas first instar larvae preyed mainly on immobile stages (eggs and quiescent stages). The predator larvae showed two types of foraging behaviour (active searching and ambush behaviour) when targeting the mobile stages (larval nymph and adult stages of prey). Although no difference was found in the number of prey consumed by adult females and third instar larvae of the predator, the adult females mainly attacked and consumed the immobile stages.  相似文献

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is a new invasive pest of soybeans throughout most of the soybean production areas of North America. Field studies have demonstrated that the indigenous predator, Orius insidiosus (Say), is an important natural enemy of the soybean aphid early the soybean crop season. Because soybean aphid is newly introduced into North America, the life history characteristics of predators fed this aphid are not known. In laboratory assays, we measured the survival, development, longevity and reproduction of O. insidiosus fed 1, 3, 6 or 12 seconds to third instars of soybean aphid. O. insidiosus nymphal development decreased from 34.0 to 21.4 days as the number of soybean aphid nymphs provided increased from 1 to 6 aphid nymphs daily. Stage-specific mortality was highest at 68% for first instar O. insidiosus nymphs fed 1 soybean aphid nymph per day. Adult longevity (43.9 days) and fecundity (49.7 eggs per female) was highest for O. insidiosus fed 6 soybean aphid nymphs daily, but longevity (23.5 days) and fecundity (10.1 eggs per female) declined for adults fed 1 soybean aphid nymph daily. The intrinsic rate of increase of O. insidiosus ranged from 0.048 to 0.133. Compared to other prey species, soybean aphid is an adequate prey item for O. insidiosus. Our results suggest that O. insidiosus will be most effective in suppressing soybean aphid population growth in the initial phase of the aphid’s colonization of soybeans.  相似文献

Arma chinensis (Fallou) is a predaceous pentatomid with the potential to control a wide range of insect pests. In this study, the stage-specific temperature-dependent development and survival of A. chinensis was investigated under seven constant temperatures (range 18–35 °C) when fed with yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.). Developmental times (in days) for the immature stage, entire nymphal stage, and egg-to-adult development were inversely proportional to temperatures between 18 and 33 °C (30 °C for eggs and 1st instar nymphs). The lowest survival rate of A. chinensis was observed at 18 °C (6.7%), whereas it was the highest (80–93.3%) at temperatures ranging from 21 to 24 °C. The low temperature thresholds for the egg, entire nymph stage, and egg-to-adult development were 14.3, 12.28, and 12.8 °C, respectively, while the thermal constants for these stages were estimated to be 85.47, 334.9, and 423.8° days. Among the three non-linear models examined, the Taylor model showed the best fit for the egg data, the Briére1 model was the best fit for the 1st instar nymph stage, and the Lactin1 model was more approprate for all the other instar stages, the entire nymphal stage, and overall development. The upper temperature thresholds estimated using the Lactin1 model for eggs, overall nymphal stage, and egg-to-adult development were 38.57, 38.9, and 40.0 °C. The optimal temperature for the overall egg-to-adult period was estimated to be 33.5 °C. The results of this study can be used for the mass rearing of this natural pest enemy and development of phenology models of its seasonal progress.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the consumption rates of two native predators found attacking the exotic invasive stink bug Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Hempitera: Pentatomidae) in field plots in New Mexico, USA. Individual field‐collected adults of the spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Hempitera: Pentatomidae) and the soft‐winged flower beetle, Collops vittatus (Say) (Coleoptera: Melyridae), were provided daily with fixed numbers of different life stages of B. hilaris under controlled conditions. Consumption rates were recorded daily for ten consecutive days for a total of 20 adult Pmaculiventris and 20 adult C. vittatus per prey life stage. For Pmaculiventris, predation rates were obtained in relation to adult, third and fifth instar prey, and for C. vittatus for first, second and third instar prey. On average, predation on third and fifth instar B. hilaris nymphs by Pmaculiventris was 0.6 ± 0.1 and 0.9 ± 0.1 per day respectively. Predation rates on adults were slightly higher (1.3 ± 0.1 per day), with female prey being consumed at a significantly higher rate than male prey when three mating pairs of B. hilaris were provided per day (0.8 ± 0.1 females per day vs. 0.5 ± 0.1 males per day). Collops vittatus adults provisioned daily with 20 first instar B. hilaris nymphs killed a mean total of 4.7 ± 0.4 and 9.3 ± 0.6 prey each day (for male and female beetles respectively), with only approximately half that number of prey being fully consumed. Partial consumption of prey by this species was also observed with second and third instar nymphs, but to a lesser degree. Female beetles consumed significantly more prey than did male beetles when fed first and third instar B. hilaris, but not when given second instar prey.  相似文献

Two experiments on the nymphal predation of Podisus maculiventris were conducted using Spodoptera litura larvae as prey. First experiment: The predator nymphs divided into three groups were reared individually from second instar to adult in a small vessel. Each nymph in the groups 1, 2 and 3 was allowed to attack the serially growing larvae (these were supplied at the rate of one per day) from 3-, 5- and 7-day old after hatching, respectively. The first prey used for the group 1 was so small that it was not only insufficient to satiate the predator but also was difficult to be searched out. But these disadvantages were soon recuperated due to the rapid growth of the prey and all nymphs could survive to adults. The survival rate of third and fourth instar nymphs in the group 3 was severely affected by vigorous counterattack of older prey larvae. Second experiment: The predator nymphs were individually reared either in a small vessel or in a large one at various rates of food supply (the prey larvae of 7-day old were used). The functional response curves obtained for each instar of the predator took a saturation type within a certain range of the prey density. The saturation level specific to each instar was generally higher for the predator reared in the large vessel than in the small one. The functional response of fourth and fifth instar nymphs was accelerated at a high prey density, viz. 16 larvae per vessel. Even at the low rate of food supply, viz. one larva per day per predator, the predator nymphs could survive to adults, but the size of resultant adults were abnormally small.  相似文献

As physiological factors may influence the predatory behavior of insects, this study was designed to evaluate the possible impact that hunger has on the search path of a polyphagous predator: Deraeocoris lutescens Schilling (Heteroptera: Miridae). D. lutescens was fed a diet of Rhopalosiphum padi (Linné) (Homoptera: Aphididae) nymphs and Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs at 21±1 °C and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D). After moulting, third and fifth instar nymphs and adults were placed in Petri dishes containing an abundant food source for 24 h. After 24 h, the food was removed and groups were randomly assigned to increasing periods of prey deprivation. Each D. lutescens nymph or adult was placed at the center of an empty arena and its searching path was recorded to calculate different path parameters and to determine the type of movement mode adopted. Results show an effect of starvation on both nymphal and adult D. lutescens searching paths. Satiated third instar nymphs manifested an intensive search path whereas fifth instar nymphs and adults adopted an intermediate one. When starved, the extensive search path appeared early in young nymphs, and later in the last instar nymphs and adults, according to the degree of prey deprivation.  相似文献

Eight insect predators common in the rice ecosystem in the Philippines were compared in the laboratory on their ability as to feed on the eggs of green hairy caterpillar,Rivula atimeta Swinhoe. A ranking, based on feeding rates was made:Metioche vittaticollis (Stål) (Gryllidae) was the most voracious predator, followed byAnaxipha longipennis (Serville)(Gryllidae), Ophionea nigrofasciata (Schmidt-Goebel)(Carabidae), Micraspis nr.crocea (Mulsant) (Coccinellidae) andConocephalus longipennis (de Haan) (Tettigoniidae). Also the smallCyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter (Miridae), readily fed upon the eggs.Paederus fuscipes Curtis (Staphilinidae) andCoccinella repanda (Thunberg) (Coccinellidae) fed to a very limited extent.Metioche vittaticollis andCyrtorhinus lividipennis were also tested on eggs of green semilooper,Naranga aenescens Moore, and rice whorl maggot,Hydrellia philippina Ferino. The feeding rate ofM. vittaticollis was similar on the 3 different preys, butC. lividipennis had a higher feeding rate onN. aenescens eggs. In 1.6 m2 field cages, different densities ofM. vittaticollis andO. nigrofasciata were allowed to feed on exposedR. atimeta eggs during 2 days.Metioche vittaticollis consumed 13 and 26 eggs at predator densities of 1 and 2 per cage respectively, but was not much higher at density 8. Predation byO. nigrofasciata was not significant.  相似文献

The zoophytophagous predator Macrolophus caliginosus (Wagner) (Heteroptera: Miridae) has previously been identified as a potential prey for the intraguild zoophytophagous predator Dicyphus tamaninii Wagner. Its value as an intraguild prey was tested for D. tamaninii nymphal development and adult survival. In the laboratory, plant (red tomato fruit, green tomato fruit, tomato leaf) and animal (aphids, whiteflies, pyralid eggs) resources were compared to frozen nymphs of M. caliginosus as an intraguild resource for D. tamaninii. M. caliginosus nymphs allowed complete and rapid development of D. tamaninii nymphs and generated low mortality of nymphal and adult stages. Performances were higher with the intraguild M. caliginosus resource than with plant resources. Tomato leaves did not allow the complete nymphal development of D. tamaninii. Tomato fruit generated lighter adults and doubled the nymphal developmental time compared with the M. caliginosus resource. In the animal resource group, there were no differences between the M. caliginosus and the other treatments (aphids, whiteflies, pyralid eggs) for nymphal mortality, average number of molts, nymphal developmental time, adult weight, and adult survival. M. caliginosus should be considered a high-quality resource for D. tamaninii.  相似文献
