Food availability is important to the dynamics of animal social organizations or populations. However, the role of winter food availability in animal population dynamics is still controversial. We carried out an experimental study to test Lack’s hypothesis that reduced food in winter limits survival and spring numbers of breeding individuals of social groups, using the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) as model species. We established 24 gerbil social groups in 24, 10 × 10 m, pens in September 2008. We provided wheat seeds as supplemental food in 12 enclosures from September 2008 to March 2009; the other 12 enclosures, not provided with supplemental food, served as controls. We live-trapped gerbils at a 2-week interval from September to April. Supplemental food during winter increased biweekly survival by 10% relative to that in control groups. Only four control social groups survived to the end of our study whereas all 12 food-supplemented social groups survived through our study period. Supplemental food also increased cumulative numbers of recruits and group sizes of gerbils. We conclude that winter food availability limits winter survival and spring social groups or population sizes of Mongolian gerbils.  相似文献

Migratory waterfowl species seem to track temporal and spatial pulses of optimal forage availability on their way from temperate wintering to arctic breeding sites. In order to unravel the relative contribution of forage quality and forage biomass to foraging choices in avian herbivores, we experimentally manipulated biomass and quality of main forage plants through fertilisation and grazing exclusion at three sites along the flyway of barnacle geese, Branta leucopsis. Fertilisation increased the nitrogen content of the forage and grazing exclusion increased biomass levels. Manipulated plots were offered to wild geese in a random block experimental design and goose visitation was measured through dropping counts. At all sites there was a trend towards a higher preference of plots with increased quality and average biomass above plots with an average quality and increased biomass. Generally, geese preferred plots with highest standing crop of nitrogen. The numerical response of the geese to forage changes was supported by behavioural observations at the Baltic site. We conclude that for migrating barnacle geese the bottlenecks in the standing crop of nitrogen appear to lie in the limited biomass availability at the Baltic stopover site and the limited nutrient content of food in the Arctic breeding site, restricting the potential nutrient intake on these sites.  相似文献

Small mammals in the temperate area often face fluctuations in food availability. Changes in food availability may have a great influence on an animals' immunity, which is important to their survival. We tested the hypothesis that cellular and humoral immunity would be suppressed by food restriction and restored to control levels by refeeding in Mongolian gerbils Meriones unguiculatus. Forty adult male gerbils were randomly divided into food-restricted (80% of baseline food intake) and food ad lib. groups. Similarly, another 40 adult male gerbils were also randomly assigned to two groups: a group for which food was restricted for 36 d and then provided ad lib. and a group that was continuously fed ad lib. Half of the gerbils in each group were injected with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and keyhole limpet hemocyanin solution to assess cellular and humoral immunity, respectively; the others were injected with sterile saline as control groups. Food-restricted gerbils had significantly lower body mass, body fat mass, dry thymus mass, wet and dry spleen mass, and serum leptin levels than those of the controls, whereas refeeding restored these parameters to the controls. Both food restriction and refeeding had no significant effect on PHA response indicative of cellular immunity, immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M concentrations, and white blood cells. We also found that food restriction decreased corticosterone levels in food-restricted gerbils, while refeeding increased corticosterone levels in refed gerbils compared with the controls. Our results suggest that cellular and humoral immunity were not affected by food restriction and refeeding in gerbils.  相似文献

三趾跳鼠(Dipus sagitta)是内蒙古西部荒漠草原和沙地的优势害鼠,巢区研究对了解探讨其繁殖策略和种群动态规律有着重要的理论和实践意义。本研究通过2012~2014年的野外标志重捕实验,对三趾跳鼠的巢区在连续放牧和禁牧条件下的变动特征进行了分析。结果表明,连续放牧区雌性三趾跳鼠在6月的巢区范围显著大于禁牧区(P0.05);禁牧区雄性三趾跳鼠的巢区仅在7月份显著大于连续放牧区(P0.05),其他季节没有显著差异(P0.05)。放牧对雄性巢区无显著影响(P0.05),但连续放牧使雌性三趾跳鼠巢区范围显著大于禁牧区。雌性与雄性三趾跳鼠巢区均与一年生草本生物量存在正相关关系。这些结果表明,相对于雄性三趾跳鼠来说,雌性对由放牧导致的食物资源变化比较敏感,这种现象在哺乳期更为显著;繁殖是影响雄性三趾跳鼠巢区的因素之一。因此,保卫资源假说的理论可能是放牧导致三趾跳鼠巢区变化的重要原因之一。  相似文献

Changes in grazing management are believed to be responsible for declines in populations of birds breeding in grassland over the last decades. The relationships between grazing management regimes, vegetation structure and composition and the availability of invertebrate food resources to passerine birds remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the foraging site selection of meadow pipits (Anthus pratensis L.) breeding in high intensity sheep-grazed plots or low intensity mixed (i.e. sheep and cattle)-grazed plots. We sampled above-ground invertebrates, measured vegetation height and density and conducted a vegetation survey in areas where meadow pipits were observed to forage and areas that were randomly selected. Birds foraged in areas with a lower vegetation height and density and in areas containing a lower proportion of the dominant, tussock-forming grass species Molinia caerulea. They did not forage in areas with a total higher invertebrate biomass but at areas with preferred vegetation characteristics invertebrate biomass tended to be higher in foraging sites than random sites. The foraging distance of meadow pipits was higher in the intensively grazed plots. Our findings support the hypothesis that resource-independent factors such as food accessibility and forager mobility may determine patch selection and are of more importance as selection criteria than food abundance per se. Food accessibility seems to become an even more important selection criterion under high grazing intensity, where prey abundance and size decrease. In our upland grazing system, a low intensity, mixed grazing regime seems to provide a more suitable combination of sward height, plant diversity, structural heterogeneity and food supply for meadow pipit foraging activity compared to a more intensive grazing regime dominated by sheep.  相似文献

New methods of noninvasive evaluation of the endocrine status of animals by the content of hormones in their feces were used to study the relationship between the stress level and social (population density) and ecological (habitat integrity) indices in natural populations of midday gerbil in the Southern Kalmykia in 2000. Stress level proved to increase with habitat disturbance but did not depend on population density of animals. The obtained data are discussed in the context of species-specific ecology and social behavior of midday gerbils.  相似文献

Abstract. The first objective of this paper was to assess the effects of grazing on seedling establishment of two species whose relative abundance at the adult stage is affected by grazing in a contrasting fashion. Second, we evaluated the relative importance of seed versus safe-site availability in explaining the effect of grazing on seedling establishment. We monitored seedling establishment on a grazed area, on two areas which had not been grazed for two and seven years, and on plots which had been experimentally defoliated. The species compared were Dan-thonia montevidensis, a native perennial grass which dominates both grazed and ungrazed communities, and Leontodón taraxacoides, an invading exotic rosette species from the Compositae family. Continuous grazing enhanced seedling establishment of both species through its effect on the availability of safe sites. Seed availability accounted for only one, but very important, grazing effect: the lack of response by L. taraxacoides to the defoliation in the seven-year old exclosure. Its seed supply was depleted by exclusion of grazing and, consequently, its short-term regeneration capacity after disturbance was lost.  相似文献

The influence of tamarisk (Meriones tamariscinus) and midday (M. meridianus) gerbils on soil biological activity in the Chernye Zemli, Kalmykia, was studied. Nitrogen fixation, denitrification, and CO2 emission were measured in soil samples from different parts of gerbil burrows. Functional biodiversity of the microbial community was evaluated using multisubstrate testing and comparison of bacterial group composition in samples from gerbil burrows. The impact of gerbils on soil biological activity was mediated by the changes in the group composition of microorganisms.  相似文献

Social groups occur in many rodents and vary in size and complexity under varying environments. Food availability is often limited in northern temperate regions and alters the life history and behavior of rodents. Increased food availability is hypothesized to increase the size and complexity of rodent social groups by enhancing individual survival and philopatry. We tested this hypothesis in Mongolian gerbils Meriones unguiculatus under semi-natural conditions in Inner Mongolia, China. The Mongolian gerbil is a cooperative breeder living in groups year-round. Gerbil colonies in 10 m × 10 m chambers were the experimental units, with four replicate chambers each for food supplementation and food unsupplemented controls in 2004 and six replicate chambers for each treatment in 2005. At 2-day intervals wheat grain supplemented the normal food in experimental chambers throughout the breeding season (May through August). We estimated founder mortality, cumulative recruitment, proportion of philopatric juveniles, ages at sexual maturity and social group size in each colony from May through August. Rates of change in group size were inversely related to social group size. The social organization of Mongolian gerbils did not differ in any of the measured parameters between food-supplemented and -unsupplemented chambers. Therefore, additional food does not influence the social organization of Mongolian gerbils during the breeding season.  相似文献

The development of the infection process during cutaneous leishmaniosis was traced in one midday gerbil (Meriones meridianus Pall). The gerbil fell ill with cutaneous leishmaniosis after the feeding of san flies of Phlebotomus papatasi and Ph. mongolensis on it. The incubation process of the disease was less than 23 days. Leishmaniosic process began at the base of the concha auriculae and caused the destruction of ear tissues. The complete recover set in 67 days after the infection. Thus, the insignificant duration of the disease does not allow leishmaniae to be preserved in midday gerbils from one season to another.  相似文献

The hypothesis that migratory bird populations are limited during the non-breeding season is increasingly supported by empirical studies that also suggest consequences that carry-over into subsequent seasons. Although variation in food supply is the best supported explanation for non-breeding season limitation, the ecological mechanisms and physiological consequences are not well understood. We both supplemented and reduced Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) food availability on replicate plots in Jamaica in each of 3 years to determine the direct role of food in limiting the physical condition of Ovenbirds. Annual variation in rainfall and food supply created a natural experiment in parallel with manipulations. Sex and age-classes of Ovenbirds did not respond differently in terms of body condition to either food manipulation or natural variation in environmental conditions, suggesting that this population is not structured by strong dominance relationships. Ovenbird body mass, fat, and pectoralis muscle shape were positively and predictably related to manipulated food availability. Feather regrowth rate also responded positively to food supplementation and negatively to food reduction in the drier of 2 years. Prior to manipulation, annual variation in body mass corresponded to annual variation in food supply and rainfall, providing additional, correlational evidence of food limitation. Since multiple intercorrelated body condition indices of Ovenbirds responded directly to food supply, and since food supply influenced body condition independently of other habitat features, we argue that food is a primary driver of non-breeding season population limitation. Moreover, since these effects were observed during the late non-breeding period, when individuals are preparing to migrate, we infer that food availability likely initiates carry-over effects.  相似文献

Abstract The response of grasslands to disturbance varies with the nature of the disturbance and the productivity of the landscape. In highly productive grasslands, competitive exclusion often results in decreased species richness and grazing may allow more species to coexist. Once widespread, grasslands dominated by Dichanthium sericeum (Queensland bluegrass) and Astrebla spp. (Mitchell grass) occur on fertile plains but have been reduced in extent by cultivation. We tested the effects of exclusion of livestock grazing on these grasslands by comparing the floristic composition of sites in a nature reserve with an adjacent stock reserve. In addition, sites that had been cultivated within the nature reserve were compared with those where grazing but no cultivation had occurred. To partition the effects of temporal variation from spatial variation we sampled sites in three different years (1998, 2002 and 2004). Some 194 taxa were recorded at the nature reserve and surrounding stock routes. Sampling time, the occurrence of past cultivation and livestock grazing all influenced species composition. Species richness varied greatly between sampling periods relating to highly variable rainfall and water availability on heavy clay soils. Native species richness was significantly lower at previously cultivated sites (13–22 years after cultivation), but was not significantly influenced by grazing exclusion. After 8 years it appears that reintroducing disturbance in the form of livestock grazing is not necessary to maintain plant species richness in the reserve. The highly variable climate (e.g. droughts) probably plays an important role in the coexistence of species by negating competitive exclusion and allowing interstitial species to persist.  相似文献

We measured and analyzed the organ masses of midday gerbils (Meriones meridianus Pallas, 1773) to test whether organ masses would respond to the variation in environmental factors. The results showed that organ masses (as expressed in log of organ dry mass) of midday gerbils changed significantly in different environmental gradients. Altitude was the best predictor of variation for heart dry mass, while it was frost-free period for the dry masses of kidneys, liver, and lung. The integrative effect of frost-free period and precipitation explained the 54.9% of the variables for kidney dry mass and 47.7% of the variables for liver dry mass. Precipitation and latitude explained 8.9% of the variables for spleen dry mass. We concluded that environmental factors had an integrative influence on organ masses. Midday gerbils’ heart mass became larger at higher altitude to respond to hypoxia and higher level of energy demand. Primary productivity (surrogated by frost-free period, precipitation, and their interaction) played the most significant role in determining the organ masses of midday gerbils. When encountering unfavorable conditions, midday gerbils had the tendency to grow larger organ masses to promote organ function.  相似文献

Immune defense is important for organisms' survival and fitness. Small mammals in temperate zone often face seasonal food shortages. Generally fasting can suppress immune function in laboratory rodents and little information is available for wild rodents. The present study tested the hypothesis that Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) could inhibit T cell-mediated immunity to adapt to acute fasting. Forty-two females were divided into the fed and fasted groups, in which the latter was deprived of food for 3 days. After 66 h fasting, half of the gerbils in each group were injected with phosphate buffered saline or phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) solution. T cell-mediated immunity assessed by PHA response was suppressed in the fasted gerbils compared with the fed gerbils. The fasted gerbils had lower body fat mass, wet and dry thymus mass, dry spleen mass, white blood cells, serum leptin and blood glucose concentrations, but higher corticosterone concentrations than those of the controls. Moreover, PHA response was positively correlated with body fat mass and serum leptin levels in the immunochallenged groups. Taken together, acute fasting leads to immunosuppression, which might be caused by low body fat mass and low serum leptin concentrations in female Mongolian gerbils.  相似文献

We tested the response of algal epifauna to the direct effects of predation and the indirect consequences of habitat change due to grazing and nutrient supply through upwelling using an abundant intertidal rhodophyte, Gelidium pristoides. We ran a mid‐shore field experiment at four sites (two upwelling sites interspersed with two non‐upwelling sites) along 450 km of the south coast of South Africa. The experiment was started in June 2014 and ran until June 2015. Four treatments (predator exclusion, grazer exclusion, control, and procedural control) set out in a block design (n = 5) were monitored monthly for algal cover for the first 6 months and every 2 months for the last 6 months. Epifaunal abundance, species composition, algal cover, and algal architectural complexity (measured using fractal geometry) were assessed after 12 months. Predation had no significant effect on epifaunal abundances, while upwelling interacted with treatment. Grazing reduced the architectural complexity of algae, with increased fractal dimensions in the absence of grazers, and also reduced algal cover at all sites, though the latter effect was only significant for upwelling sites. Epifaunal community composition was not significantly affected by the presence of herbivores or predators but differed among sites independently of upwelling; sites were more similar to nearby sites than those farther away. In contrast, total epifaunal abundance was significantly affected by grazing, when normalized to algal cover. Grazing reduced the cover of algae; thus, epifaunal abundances were not affected by the direct top‐down effects of predation but did respond to the indirect effects of grazing on habitat availability and quality. Our results indicate that epifaunal communities can be strongly influenced by the indirect consequences of biotic interactions.  相似文献

该研究于2020年5月、7月和9月在天山北坡中段试验区的禁牧区(5a)和放牧区分别进行调查采样,测定分析不同月份禁牧区和放牧区伊犁绢蒿种群数量特征(高度、盖度、密度和生物量)及构件(茎、叶、根)生物量,以揭示植物种群特征和构件生物量对禁牧的响应规律,为退化草地的修复治理以及合理利用提供依据。结果表明:(1)与放牧区相比,5月、7月、9月禁牧区的伊犁绢蒿种群的高度、盖度和生物量均显著增加(P<0.05),其中高度增幅为69.90%~95.53%,盖度增幅为186.53%~297.82%,生物量增幅为86.24%~631.83%。(2)随着月份的推移,禁牧区与放牧区伊犁绢蒿单株生物量、茎生物量和叶生物量均呈先降后增的变化趋势,而根生物量呈增加的趋势;禁牧改变了植株构件比例,与放牧区相比,禁牧区茎、叶的生物量所占单株生物量的比例在7月、9月均显著增加,而根生物量所占比例显著降低。研究认为,禁牧有利于地上植被的恢复,使其构件结构改变,是恢复退化荒漠草地植物的有效措施。  相似文献

The effects of grazing exclusion on species diversity and functional diversity were analyzed along an elevation gradient from the subalpine (1960 m a.s.l.) to the lower and upper alpine zone (2275 m–2650 m a.s.l.) in the Austrian Central Alps for 15 years. Nine sites were chosen, including grasslands at different elevations, a bog and a glacier foreland site at the lower alpine zone and a snowbed at the upper alpine zone. Data were acquired by frequency counts in 1 m2 permanent plots inside each fenced area (three plots per site) and outside in grazed areas (three plots). Diversity indices and functional diversity were analyzed by means of generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs). Exclosure, duration of exclusion and exclosure*years (interaction effect) were defined as predictor variables. Multivariate ordination techniques were used to (i) determine species responses to grazing exclusion (pRDA, partial redundancy analysis) and (ii) to create a distance matrix representing the changes between exclosures and control plots per year (NMDS, non-metric multidimensional scaling). At the subalpine grassland, first differences between exclosure and control plots occurred already only after three years, at the upper alpine zone after four and five years. Contrary to our expectation, dwarf shrubs did not increase within the exclosures of the subalpine grassland. Instead, mainly the tall forb Geranium sylvaticum increased. Species richness significantly decreased at the exclosures of the subalpine zone, the snowbed and at one upper alpine grassland sites. The communities of the glacier foreland and the bog were hardly affected by grazing exclusion.We conclude that plant species and communities react individually depending on elevation and grazing animals. Grazing exclusion studies at high elevations should definitely be carried out in the long-term.  相似文献

采用标志重捕方法并结合挖仓及相应的洞口研究了长爪沙鼠(Meriones unguicu-latus)在作物秋收期的行为适应特征,并通过田间他隔实验获得了长爪沙鼠季节性迁移的直接证据。研究结果表明,在作物秋收期该鼠具有特征性贮食活动,其贮食种类及贮食量随田间收割和运场进度的不同而有明显差异。且此期生境迁移明显,显示主动迁移和胁迫迁移两类空间行为模式。这些适应性行为特征与秋收期农田种子资源及其可获得性的变化及农业措施密切相关。据此,结合当地秋收期的农作措施,着重从干扰长爪沙鼠贮食行为及控制冬贮种子资源量的途径,提出以行为管理为主的生态治理对策。  相似文献

为检验施用炔雌醚对农牧交错带长爪沙鼠家群大小与巢域行为的影响,于2006年5月至9月对内蒙古锡林郭勒盟锡林浩特市农牧交错区域分布的长爪沙鼠家群使用炔雌醚进行种群不育控制实验。分设投药区和对照区两个组别,分别于5月、7月与9月份采用1/4样圆面积有效洞口计数法,随机选取24个长爪沙鼠家群,调查对照区域和投药区内沙鼠的家群洞口数量以及家群大小。另在对照区和投药区,随机测定了30个沙鼠的家群活动范围,对比使用炔雌醚前后长爪沙鼠巢域平均半径和活动面积的影响。结果为:对照区家群平均洞口数58个,投药区仅23个,在炔雌醚投药区长爪沙鼠家群受炔雌醚影响,洞口数仅为23个,表明其对长爪沙鼠家群大小控制效果显著。投药区内长爪沙鼠家群密度在投药后连续下降,最大下降幅度较对照区家群密度低70%,表明炔雌醚对长爪沙鼠的家群密度影响较大,可显著降低长爪沙鼠家群密度(P<0.05)。炔雌醚对长爪沙鼠家群平均半径和活动面积的研究结果显示,施用炔雌醚后家群巢域半径与活动面积均显著缩小(P<0.05),与对照区巢域平均面积相比缩小15%、平均活动半径缩小30%。通过以上结果可得出:单独施用炔雌醚对控制野外长爪沙鼠家群以及降低长爪沙鼠巢域、活动面积效果显著。炔雌醚可有效降低农牧交错带长爪沙鼠种群数量和有效活动范围,这对于农牧交错带的鼠害防控,同时降低鼠源性疾病,包括鼠疫的传播都有一定的意义。  相似文献
