Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP ) is an essential macronutrient for maintaining metabolism and growth in autotrophs. Little is known about DIP uptake kinetics and internal P‐storage capacity in seaweeds, such as Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta). Ulva lactuca is a promising candidate for biofiltration purposes and mass commercial cultivation. We exposed U. lactuca to a wide range of DIP concentrations (1–50 μmol · L?1) and a nonlimiting concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN ; 5,000 μmol · L?1) under fully controlled laboratory conditions in a “pulse‐and‐chase” assay over 10 d. Uptake kinetics were standardized per surface area of U. lactuca fronds. Two phases of responses to DIP ‐pulses were measured: (i) a surge uptake (VS ) of 0.67 ± 0.10 μmol · cm?2 · d?1 and (ii) a steady state uptake (VM ) of 0.07 ± 0.03 μmol · cm?2 · d?1. Mean internal storage capacity (ISCP ) of 0.73 ± 0.13 μmol · cm?2 was calculated for DIP . DIP uptake did not affect DIN uptake. Parameters of DIN uptake were also calculated: VS  = 12.54 ± 1.90 μmol · cm?2 · d?1, VM  = 2.26 ± 0.86 μmol · cm?2 · d?1, and ISCN  = 22.90 ± 6.99 μmol · cm?2. Combining ISC and VM values of P and N, nutrient storage capacity of U. lactuca was estimated to be sufficient for ~10 d. Both P and N storage capacities were filled within 2 d when exposed to saturating nutrient concentrations, and uptake rates declined thereafter at 90% for DIP and at 80% for DIN . Our results contribute to understanding the ecological aspects of nutrient uptake kinetics in U. lactuca and quantitatively evaluating its potential for bioremediation and/or biomass production for food, feed, and energy.  相似文献

The red seaweed Gracilariopsis is an important crop extensively cultivated in China for high‐quality raw agar. In the cultivation site at Nanao Island, Shantou, China, G. lemaneiformis experiences high variability in environmental conditions like seawater temperature. In this study, G. lemaneiformis was cultured at 12, 19, or 26°C for 3 weeks, to examine its photosynthetic acclimation to changing temperature. Growth rates were highest in G. lemaneiformis thalli grown at 19°C, and were reduced with either decreased or increased temperature. The irradiance‐saturated rate of photosynthesis (Pmax) decreased with decreasing temperature, but increased significantly with prolonged cultivation at lower temperatures, indicating the potential for photosynthesis acclimation to lower temperature. Moreover, Pmax increased with increasing temperature (~30 μmol O2 · g?1FW · h?1 at 12°C to 70 μmol O2 · g?1FW · h?1 at 26°C). The irradiance compensation point for photosynthesis (Ic) decreased significantly with increasing temperature (28 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1 at high temperature vs. 38 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1 at low temperature). Both the photosynthetic light‐ and carbon‐use efficiencies increased with increasing growth or temperatures (from 12°C to 26°C). The results suggested that the thermal acclimation of photosynthetic performance of G. lemaneiformis would have important ecophysiological implications in sea cultivation for improving photosynthesis at low temperature and maintaining high standing biomass during summer. Ongoing climate change (increasing atmospheric CO2 and global warming) may enhance biomass production in G. lemaneiformis mariculture through the improved photosynthetic performances in response to increasing temperature.  相似文献

The roles of temperature and light on grazing and photosynthesis were examined for Dinobryon sociale, a common freshwater mixotrophic alga. Photosynthetic rate was determined for D. sociale adapted to temperatures of 8, 12, 16, and 20°C under photosynthetically active radiation light irradiances of 25, 66, and 130 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1, with concurrent measurement of bacterial ingestion at all temperatures under medium and high light (66 and 130 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1). Rates of ingestion and photosynthesis increased with temperature to a maximum at 16°C under the two higher light regimes, and declined at 20°C. Although both light and temperature had a marked effect on photosynthesis, there was no significant difference in bacterivory at medium and high irradiances at any given temperature. At the lowest light condition (25 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1), photosynthesis remained low and relatively stable at all temperatures. D. sociale acquired the majority of carbon from photosynthesis, although the low photosynthetic rate without a concurrent decline in feeding rate at 8°C suggested 20%–30% of the carbon budget could be attributed to bacterivory at low temperatures. Grazing experiments in nutrient‐modified media revealed that this mixotroph had increased ingestion rates when either dissolved nitrogen or phosphorus was decreased. This work increases our understanding of environmental effects on mixotrophic nutrition. Although the influence of abiotic factors on phagotrophy and phototrophy in pure heterotrophs and phototrophs has been well studied, much less is known for mixotrophic organisms.  相似文献

The ichthyotoxic flagellate Pseudochattonella has formed recurrent blooms in the North Sea, Skagerrak and Kattegat since 1998. Five strains of Pseudochattonella farcimen and two strains of P. verruculosa were examined in an assay comparing the light response of specific growth rates over a range of temperatures and salinities to get further knowledge on the autecology of members of this genus. Temperature optima were lower in P. farcimen (9°C–15°C) than in P. verruculosa (12°C–20°C). P. farcimen also showed a somewhat lower salinity optimum (18–26) than P. verruculosa (20–32). All strains showed light‐dependent growth responses reaching saturation between 18 and 52 μmol · photons · m?2 · s?1 at optimal temperature and salinity conditions. Compensation point estimates ranged from 4.2 to 15 μmol · photons · m?2 · s?1. Loss rates increased with temperature and were lowest at salinities close to optimal growth conditions. Blooms of P. farcimen have been recorded in nature under conditions more similar to those minimizing loss rates rather than those maximizing growth rates in our culture study.  相似文献

Thalassiosira oceanica (CCMP 1005) was grown over a range of copper concentrations at saturating and subsaturating irradiance to test the hypothesis that Cu and light were interacting essential resources. Growth was a hyperbolic function of irradiance in Cu‐replete medium (263 fmol Cu′ · L?1) with maximum rates achieved at 200 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1. Lowering the Cu concentration at this irradiance to 30.8 fmol Cu′ · L?1 decreased cellular Cu quota by 7‐fold and reduced growth rate by 50%. Copper‐deficient cells had significantly slower (P < 0.0001) rates of maximum, relative photosynthetic electron transport (rETRmax) than Cu‐sufficient cells, consistent with the role of Cu in photosynthesis in this diatom. In low‐Cu medium (30.8 fmol Cu′ · L?1), growth rate was best described as a positive, linear function of irradiance and reached the maximum value measured in Cu‐replete cells when irradiance increased to 400 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1. Thus, at high light, low‐Cu concentration was no longer limiting to growth: Cu concentration and light interacted strongly to affect growth rate of T. oceanica (P < 0.0001). Relative ETRmax and Cu quota of cells grown at low Cu also increased at 400 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1 to levels measured in Cu‐replete cells. Steady‐state uptake rates of Cu‐deficient and sufficient cells were light‐dependent, suggesting that faster growth of T. oceanica under high light and low Cu was a result of light‐stimulated Cu uptake.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the optimal physical process conditions for the cultivation of locally isolated strains of Nannochloropsis sp. and Tetraselmis striata to achieve maximum growth rate. It was essential to evaluate biomass production at different agitation rates, light intensities, and temperature levels. Central composite design and response surface methodology were applied to design the experiments and optimize the cultivation process for Nannochloropsis sp. and T. striata. The specific growth rate of 0.250 d?1 was obtained for Nannochloropsis sp. cells under the light intensity of 54 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1, at the agitation rate of 151 rpm in 24.5°C. The optimal physical process conditions for T. striata were obtained under the light intensity of 56 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1 in 25.5°C at the agitation rate of 151 rpm in 25.5°C, resulting in a specific growth rate of 0.226 d?1. The predicted values were justified by the verification tests. Good agreement between the predicted values and the experimental values confirmed the validity of the models for the cultivation of microalgal strains. In this article, the noteworthy result was that temperature was a dominant factor in obtaining high chl‐a content for Nannochloropsis sp., whereas the growth of T. striata strongly depended on light exposure.  相似文献

Short‐rotation woody biomass crops (SRWC) have been proposed as a major feedstock source for bioenergy generation in the Northeastern US. To quantify the environmental effects and greenhouse gas (GHG) balance of crops including SRWC, investigators need spatially explicit data which encompass entire plantation cycles. A knowledge gap exists for the establishment period which makes current GHG calculations incomplete. In this study, we investigated the effects of converting pasture and hayfields to willow (Salix spp.) and hybrid‐poplar (Populus spp.) SRWC plantations on soil nitrogen (N) cycling, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, and nitrate (NO3?) leaching at six sites of varying soil and climate conditions across northern Michigan and Wisconsin, following these plantations from pre conversion through their first 2 years. All six sites responded to establishment with increased N2O emissions, available inorganic N, and, where it was measured, NO3? leaching; however, the magnitude of these impacts varied dramatically among sites. Soil NO3? levels varied threefold among sites, with peak extractable NO3? concentrations ranging from 15 to 49 g N kg?1 soil. Leaching losses were significant and persisted through the second year, with 44–112 kg N ha?1 leached in SRWC plots. N2O emissions in the first growing season varied 30‐fold among sites, from 0.5 to 17.0 Mg‐CO2eq ha?1 (carbon dioxide equivalents). N2O emissions over 2 years resulted in N2O emissions due to plantation establishment that ranged from 0.60 to 22.14 Mg‐CO2eq ha?1 above baseline control levels across sites. The large N losses we document herein demonstrate the importance of including direct effects of land conversion in life‐cycle analysis (LCA) studies of SRWC GHG balance. Our results also demonstrate the need for better estimation of spatial variability of N cycling processes to quantify the full environmental impacts of SRWC plantations.  相似文献

Southeastern Australian waters are warming at nearly four times the global average rate (~0.7°C · century?1) driven by strengthening incursions of the warm oligotrophic East Australian Current. The growth rate hypothesis (GRH) predicts that nutrient depletion will impact more severely on seaweeds at high latitudes with compressed growth seasons. This study investigates the effects of temperature and nutrients on the ecophysiology of the habitat‐forming seaweed Phyllospora comosa in a laboratory experiment using temperature (12°C, 17°C, 22°C) and nutrient (0.5, 1.0, 3.0 μM NO3?) scenarios representative of observed variation among geographic regions. Changes in growth, photosynthetic characteristics (via chlorophyll fluorescence), pigment content, tissue chemistry (δ13C, % C, % N, C:N) and nucleic acid characteristics (absolute RNA and DNA, RNA:DNA ratios) were determined in seaweeds derived from cool, high‐latitude and warm, low‐latitude portions of the species’ range. Performance of P. comosa was unaffected by nitrate availability but was strongly temperature‐dependent, with photosynthetic efficiency, growth, and survival significantly impaired at 22°C. While some physiological processes (photosynthesis, nucleic acid, and accessory pigment synthesis) responded rapidly to temperature, others (C/N dynamics, carbon concentrating processes) were largely invariant and biogeographic variation in these characteristics may only occur through genetic adaptation. No link was detected between nutrient availability, RNA synthesis and growth, and the GRH was not supported in this species. While P. comosa at high latitudes may be less susceptible to oligotrophy than predicted by the GRH, warming water temperatures will have deleterious effects on this species across its range unless rapid adaptation is possible.  相似文献

The genus Pseudo‐nitzschia contains potentially toxic species of problematic taxonomy, making it one of the most intensively studied diatom genera. The study of 35 clonal strains isolated from the Bilbao estuary, an area that experiences recurrent blooms of Pseudo‐nitzschia, revealed the presence of two new species, P. abrensis and P. plurisecta, differing from their congeners in both morphology and gene sequence. The morphological features were analyzed by LM and EM, whereas molecular analyses were based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) regions of the rDNA. P. plurisecta appears closely related to P. cuspidata/P. pseudodelicatissima in the phylogenetic tree, whereas P. abrensis forms a moderately supported clade with P. heimii/P. subpacifica and P. caciantha/P. circumpora. Comparison of the secondary structure of ITS2 regions reveals marked differences in the most highly conserved regions among related taxa. Morphologically, the new species differ from their closest congeners in the arrangement of the poroid sectors and the density of valve striae and fibulae. The two species share similar pigment composition, and belong to the group of Pseudo‐nitzschia species containing only chlorophyll c2 and c3.  相似文献

A field trial was carried out on a 15 year old Miscanthus stand, subject to nitrogen fertilizer treatments of 0, 63 and 125 kg‐N ha?1, measuring N2O emissions, as well as annual crop yield over a full year. N2O emission intensity (N2O emissions calculated as a function of above‐ground biomass) was significantly affected by fertilizer application, with values of 52.2 and 59.4 g N2O‐N t?1 observed at 63 and 125 kg‐N ha?1, respectively, compared to 31.3 g N2O‐N t?1 in the zero fertilizer control. A life cycle analyses approach was applied to calculate the increase in yield required to offset N2O emissions from Miscanthus through fossil fuel substitution in the fuel chain. For the conditions observed during the field trial yield increases of 0.33 and 0.39 t ha?1 were found to be required to offset N2O emissions from the 63 kg‐N ha?1 treatment, when replacing peat and coal, respectively, while increases of 0.71 and 0.83 t ha?1 were required for the 125 kg‐N ha?1 treatment, for each fuel. These values are considerably less than the mean above‐ground biomass yield increases observed here of 1.57 and 2.79 t ha?1 at fertilization rates 63 and 125 kg‐N ha?1 respectively. Extending this analysis to include a range of fertilizer application rates and N2O emission factors found increases in yield necessary to offset soil N2O emissions ranging from 0.26 to 2.54 t ha?1. These relatively low yield increase requirements indicate that where nitrogen fertilizer application improves yield, the benefits of such a response will not be offset by soil N2O emissions.  相似文献

Twenty years ago an Arctic cryptophyte was isolated from Baffin Bay and given strain number CCMP 2045. Here, it was described using morphology, water‐ and non‐water soluble pigments and nuclear‐encoded SSU rDNA . The influence of temperature, salinity, and light intensity on growth rates was also examined. Microscopy revealed typical cryptophyte features but the chloroplast color was either green or red depending on the light intensity provided. Phycoerythrin (Cr‐PE 566) was only produced when cells were grown under low‐light conditions (5 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1). Non‐water‐soluble pigments included chlorophyll a , c 2 and five major carotenoids. Cells measured 8.2 × 5.1 μm and a tail‐like appendage gave them a comma‐shape. The nucleus was located posteriorly and a horseshoe‐shaped chloroplast contained a single pyrenoid. Ejectosomes of two sizes and a nucleomorph anterior to the pyrenoid were discerned in TEM . SEM revealed a slightly elevated vestibular plate in the vestibulum. The inner periplast component consisted of slightly overlapping hexagonal plates arranged in 16–20 oblique rows. Antapical plates were smaller and their shape less profound. Temperature and salinity studies revealed CCMP 2045 as stenothermal and euryhaline and growth was saturated between 5 and 20 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1. The phylogeny based on SSU rDNA showed that CCMP 2045 formed a distinct clade with CCMP 2293 and Falcomonas sp. isolated from Spain. Combining pheno‐ and genotypic data, the Arctic cryptophyte could not be placed in an existing family and genus and therefore Baffinellaceae fam. nov. and Baffinella frigidus gen. et sp. nov. were proposed.  相似文献

With the human intensification of agricultural and industrial activities, large amount of reduced nitrogen enter into the biosphere, which consequently results in the development of global eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms. However, no research had reported the effect of ammonia toxicity on the algal succession. In this study, we investigated the ammonia toxicity to 19 algal species or strains to test the hypothesis that ammonia may regulate the succession of cyanobacterial blooms and the distribution of common algal species in freshwater lakes. The bloom‐forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806 suffered from ammonia toxicity at high pH value and light intensity conditions. Low NH4Cl concentration (0.06 mmol L?1) resulted in the decrease of operational PSII quantum yield by 50% compared with the control exposed to 1000 μmol photons m?2 s?1 for 1 h at pH 9.0 ± 0.2, which can be reached in freshwater lakes. Furthermore, the tolerant abilities to NH3 toxicity of 18 freshwater algal species or strains were as follows: hypertrophication species > eutrophication species > mesotrophication species > oligotrophication species. The different sensitivities of NH3 toxicity in this study could well explain the distributing rule of common algal species in the freshwater lakes of different trophic states. Meanwhile, the cyanobacterial bloom (e.g. M. aeruginosa) always happened at the low concentration of ammonia in summer, and disappeared with the decrease of ammonia. This may be attributed to the toxic effect of ammonia to M. aeruginosa in spring (the average and maximum ammonia concentration were 0.08 and 0.72 mmol L?1 in 33 Chinese lakes), and the low level of NH3‐N in summer and fall in the lakes might be used as preferred nitrogen nutrition by M. aeruginosa, rather than with toxicity. Therefore, ammonia could be a key factor to determine the distribution of common algal species and cyanobacterial bloom in the freshwater systems.  相似文献

Six species of phytoplankton recently isolated from upper San Francisco Bay were tested for their sensitivity to growth inhibition by ammonium (NH4+), and for differences in growth rates according to inorganic nitrogen (N) growth source. The quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was a sensitive indicator of NH4+ toxicity, manifested by a suppression of Fv/Fm in a dose‐dependent manner. Two chlorophytes were the least sensitive to NH4+ inhibition, at concentrations of >3,000 μmoles NH4+ · L?1, followed by two estuarine diatoms that were sensitive at concentrations >1,000 μmoles NH4+ · L?1, followed lastly by two freshwater diatoms that were sensitive at concentrations between 200 and 500 μmoles NH4+ · L?1. At non‐inhibiting concentrations of NH4+, the freshwater diatom species grew fastest, followed by the estuarine diatoms, while the chlorophytes grew slowest. Variations in growth rates with N source did not follow taxonomic divisions. Of the two chlorophytes, one grew significantly faster on nitrate (NO3?), whereas the other grew significantly faster on NH4+. All four diatoms tested grew faster on NH4+ compared with NO3?. We showed that in cases where growth rates were faster on NH4+ than they were on NO3?, the difference was not larger for chlorophytes compared with diatoms. This holds true for comparisons across a number of culture investigations suggesting that diatoms as a group will not be at a competitive disadvantage under natural conditions when NH4+ dominates the total N pool and they will also not have a growth advantage when NO3? is dominant, as long as N concentrations are sufficient.  相似文献

We determined the quantum requirements for growth (1/?μ) and fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis (1/?FA) in the marine diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, grown in nutrient replete conditions with nitrate or ammonium as nitrogen sources, and under nitrogen limitation, achieved by transferring cells into nitrogen free medium or by inhibiting nitrate assimilation with tungstate. A treatment in which tungstate was supplemented to cells grown with ammonium was also included. In nutrient replete conditions, cells grew exponentially and possessed virtually identical 1/?μ of 40–44 mol photons · mol C?1. In parallel, 1/?FA varied between 380 and 409 mol photons · mol C?1 in the presence of nitrate, but declined to 348 mol photons · mol C?1 with ammonium and to 250 mol photons · mol C?1 with ammonium plus tungstate, indicating an increase in the efficiency of FA biosynthesis relative to cells grown on nitrate of 8% and 35%, respectively. While the molecular mechanism for this effect remains poorly understood, the results unambiguously reveal that cells grown on ammonium are able to direct more reductant to lipids. This analysis suggests that when cells are grown with a reduced nitrogen source, fatty acid biosynthesis can effectively become a sink for excess absorbed light, compensating for the absence of energetically demanding nitrate assimilation reactions. Our data further suggest that optimal lipid production efficiency is achieved when cells are in exponential growth, when nitrate assimilation is inhibited, and ammonium is the sole nitrogen source.  相似文献

This study examines the role of tree canopies in processing atmospheric nitrogen (Ndep) for four forests in the United Kingdom subjected to different Ndep: Scots pine and beech stands under high Ndep (HN, 13–19 kg N ha?1 yr?1), compared to Scots pine and beech stands under low Ndep (LN, 9 kg N ha?1 yr?1). Changes of NO3‐N and NH4‐N concentrations in rainfall (RF) and throughfall (TF) together with a quadruple isotope approach, which combines δ18O, Δ17O and δ15N in NO3? and δ15N in NH4+, were used to assess N transformations by the canopies. Generally, HN sites showed higher NH4‐N and NO3‐N concentrations in RF compared to the LN sites. Similar values of δ15N‐NO3? and δ18O in RF suggested similar source of atmospheric NO3? (i.e. local traffic), while more positive values for δ15N‐NH4+ at HN compared to LN likely reflected the contribution of dry NHx deposition from intensive local farming. The isotopic signatures of the N‐forms changed after interacting with tree canopies. Indeed, 15N‐enriched NH4+ in TF compared to RF at all sites suggested that canopies played an important role in buffering dry Ndep also at the low Ndep site. Using two independent methods, based on δ18O and Δ17O, we quantified for the first time the proportion of NO3? in TF, which derived from nitrification occurring in tree canopies at the HN site. Specifically, for Scots pine, all the considered isotope approaches detected biological nitrification. By contrast for the beech, only using the mixing model with Δ17O, we were able to depict the occurrence of nitrification within canopies. Our study suggests that tree canopies play an active role in the N cycling within forest ecosystems. Processing of Ndep within canopies should not be neglected and needs further exploration, with the combination of multiple isotope tracers, with particular reference to Δ17O.  相似文献

This work originates from three facts: (i) changes in CO2 availability influence metabolic processes in algal cells; (ii) Spatial and temporal variations of nitrogen availability cause repercussions on phytoplankton physiology; (iii) Growth and cell composition are dependent on the stoichiometry of nutritional resources. In this study, we assess whether the impact of rising pCO2 is influenced by N availability, through the impact that it would have on the C/N stoichiometry, in conditions of N sufficiency. Our experiments used the dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum, which we cultured under three CO2 regimes (400, 1,000, and 5,000 ppmv, pH of 8.1) and either variable (the NO3? concentration was always 2.5 mmol · L?1) or constant (NO3? concentration varied to maintain the same Ci/NO3? ratio at all pCO2) Ci/NO3? ratio. Regardless of N availability, cells had higher specific growth rates, but lower cell dry weight and C and N quotas, at elevated CO2. The carbohydrate pool size and the C/N was unaltered in all treatments. The lipid content only decreased at high pCO2 at constant Ci/NO3? ratio. In the variable Ci/NO3? conditions, the relative abundance of Rubisco (and other proteins) also changed; this did not occur at constant Ci/NO3?. Thus, the biomass quality of P. reticulatum for grazers was affected by the Ci/NO3? ratio in the environment and not only by the pCO2, both with respect to the size of the main organic pools and the composition of the expressed proteome.  相似文献

Uptake rates of dissolved inorganic phosphorus and dissolved inorganic nitrogen under unsaturated and saturated conditions were studied in young sporophytes of the seaweeds Saccharina latissima and Laminaria digitata (Phaeophyceae) using a “pulse‐and‐chase” assay under fully controlled laboratory conditions. In a subsequent second “pulse‐and‐chase” assay, internal storage capacity (ISC) was calculated based on VM and the parameter for photosynthetic efficiency Fv/Fm. Sporophytes of S. latissima showed a VS of 0.80 ± 0.03 μmol · cm?2 · d?1 and a VM of 0.30 ± 0.09 μmol · cm?2 · d?1 for dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP), whereas VS for DIN was 11.26 ± 0.56 μmol · cm?2 · d?1 and VM was 3.94 ± 0.67 μmol · cm?2 · d?1. In L. digitata, uptake kinetics for DIP and DIN were substantially lower: VS for DIP did not exceed 0.38 ± 0.03 μmol · cm?2 · d?1 while VM for DIP was 0.22 ± 0.01 μmol · cm?2 · d?1. VS for DIN was 3.92 ± 0.08 μmol · cm?2 · d?1 and the VM for DIN was 1.81 ± 0.38 μmol · cm?2 · d?1. Accordingly, S. latissima exhibited a larger ISC for DIP (27 μmol · cm?2) than L. digitata (10 μmol · cm?2), and was able to maintain high growth rates for a longer period under limiting DIP conditions. Our standardized data add to the physiological understanding of S. latissima and L. digitata, thus helping to identify potential locations for their cultivation. This could further contribute to the development and modification of applications in a bio‐based economy, for example, in evaluating the potential for bioremediation in integrated multitrophic aquacultures that produce biomass simultaneously for use in the food, feed, and energy industries.  相似文献

Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and nitrogen (N) deposition induced by human activities have greatly influenced the stoichiometry of N and phosphorus (P). We used model forest ecosystems in open‐top chambers to study the effects of elevated CO2 (ca. 700 μmol mol?1) alone and together with N addition (100 kg N ha?1 yr?1) on N to P (N : P) ratios in leaves, stems and roots of five tree species, including four non‐N2 fixers and one N2 fixer, in subtropical China from 2006 to 2009. Elevated CO2 decreased or had no effects on N : P ratios in plant tissues of tree species. N addition, especially under elevated CO2, lowered N : P ratios in the N2 fixer, and this effect was significant in the stems and the roots. However, only one species of the non‐N2 fixers showed significantly lower N : P ratios under N addition in 2009, and the others were not affected by N addition. The reductions of N : P ratios in response to elevated CO2 and N addition were mainly associated with the increases in P concentrations. Our results imply that elevated CO2 and N addition could facilitate tree species to mitigate P limitation by more strongly influencing P dynamics than N in the subtropical forests.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation has been proposed as a mechanism that allows the diazotrophic cyanobacterium, Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, to bloom in nitrogen‐limited freshwater systems. However, it is unclear whether dinitrogen fixation (N2 fixation) can supplement available dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) for growth, or only provides minimum nitrogen (N) for cell maintenance under DIN deplete conditions. Additionally, the rate at which cells can switch between DIN use and N2 fixation is unknown. This study investigated N2 fixation under a range of nitrate concentrations. Cultures were grown with pretreatments of nitrate replete (single dose 941 μmol  · L?1) and N‐free conditions and then either received a single dose of 941 μmol  · L?1 (N941), 118 μmol  · L?1 (N118) or 0 N. Heterocysts appeared from days 3 to 5 when treatments of high were transferred to N free media (N941:N0), and from day 5 in N941 transferred to N118 treatments. Conversely, transferring cells from N0 to N941 resulted in heterocysts being discarded from day 3 and day 5 for N0:N118. Heterocyst appearance correlated with a detectable rate of N2 fixation and up‐regulation of nifH gene expression, the discard of heterocysts occurred after sequential reduction of nifH expression and N2 fixation. Nitrate uptake rates were not affected by pretreatment, suggesting no regulation or saturation of this uptake pathway. These data demonstrate that for C. raciborskii, N2 fixation is regulated by the production or discard of heterocysts. In conclusion, this study has shown that N2 fixation only provides enough N to support relatively low growth under N‐limited conditions, and does not supplement available nitrate to increase growth rates.  相似文献

The biogeochemistry of iodine in temperate coastal ecosystems is largely mediated by macroalgae, which act as a major biological sink and source of iodine. Their capacity to accumulate, retain and release iodine has been associated with abiotic and biotic stressors, but quantitative information is limited. We evaluated the seasonal iodine retention capacity of eleven macroalgal species belonging to different systematic groups, collected from two sites in Ireland. Iodine accumulation and retention were then further quantified in Fucus vesiculosus and Laminaria digitata in relation to I? concentrations in seawater and temperature. In general, iodine contents were ~101–102 μmol · (g dw)?1 for Laminariales, 100–101 μmol · (g dw)?1 for Fucales, 10?1–100 μmol · (g dw)?1 for Rhodophyta, and 10?1 μmol · (g dw)?1 for Chlorophyta. Typically, algal iodine contents were above average in winter and below average in summer. Iodine accumulation in F. vesiculosus and L. digitata depended on I? availability and followed the Michaelis‐Menten kinetic. The ratio of maximum accumulation rate to half accumulation coefficient (ρmax: K t) was 2.4 times higher for F. vesiculosus than for L. digitata , suggesting that F. vesiculosus was more efficient in iodine accumulation. Both species exhibited a temperature‐dependent net loss of iodine, and only an exposure to sufficient external I? concentrations compensated for this loss. This study revealed that both environmental (e.g., I? in seawater, temperature) and organismal (e.g., the status of the iodine storage pool) variables determine retention and variability in iodine in temperate seaweeds.  相似文献
