The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), as an environmentally friendly method to convert nitrogen to ammonia at ambient temperature and pressure, has attracted the attention of numerous researchers. However, when compared with industrial production, electrochemical NRR often suffers from unsatisfactory yields and poor Faraday efficiency (FE). Recently, various structure engineering strategies have aimed to introduce extra active sites or enhance intrinsic activity to optimize the activation and hydrogenation of N2. In this review, recent progress in atomic structure modification is summarized and discussed to design high‐efficiency NRR catalysts, with a focus on defect engineering (heteroatom doping and atom vacancy), surface orientation and amorphization, as well as heterostructure engineering. In addition, existing challenges and future development directions are proposed to obtain more credible NRR catalysts with high catalytic performance and selectivity.  相似文献

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to fuels is considered a promising strategy for the sustainable carbon cycle. However, the improvement of the catalytic performance of CO2 electrocatalysts still poses many challenges, especially achieving the large partial current density of product and high faradaic efficiency simultaneously, which are essential for future applications of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. In response, herein, an in situ porous Zn catalyst is prepared and exhibits high faradaic efficiency and large CO partial current density at the same time, benefiting from the porous architecture with increased exposure and accessibility of active sites. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the high faradaic efficiency is attributed to the favorable adsorption energy of the key intermediate, which promotes CO2 electroreduction to CO.  相似文献

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to useful molecules offers an elegant technological solution to current energy security and sustainability issues because it sequesters carbon from the atmosphere, provides an energy storage solution for intermittent renewable sources, and can be used to produce fuels and industrial chemicals. Nanostructured carbon materials have been extensively used to catalyse some key electrochemical processes because of their excellent electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and abundant active sites. This progress report focuses on nanostructured carbon materials, namely graphene materials, carbon nanotubes, porphyrin materials, nanodiamond, and glassy carbon, which have recently shown promise as high performing CO2 reduction electrocatalysts and supports. Along with discussion regarding materials synthesis, structural characterisation, and electrochemical performance characterisation techniques used, this report will discuss the findings of recent computational CO2RR studies which have been key to elucidating active sites and reaction mechanisms, and developing strategies to break conventional scaling relationships. Lastly, challenges and future perspective of these carbon‐based materials for CO2 reduction applications will be given. Much work is still required to realise the commercial viability of the technology, but advanced experimental techniques coupled with theoretical calculations are expected to facilitate future development of the technology.  相似文献

Carbon‐based heteroatom‐coordinated single‐atom catalysts (SACs) are promising candidates for energy‐related electrocatalysts because of their low‐cost, tunable catalytic activity/selectivity, and relatively homogeneous morphologies. Unique interactions between single metal sites and their surrounding coordination environments play a significant role in modulating the electronic structure of the metal centers, leading to unusual scaling relationships, new reaction mechanisms, and improved catalytic performance. This review summarizes recent advancements in engineering of the local coordination environment of SACs for improved electrocatalytic performance for several crucial energy‐convention electrochemical reactions: oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, and nitrogen reduction reaction. Various engineering strategies including heteroatom‐doping, changing the location of SACs on their support, introducing external ligands, and constructing dual metal sites are comprehensively discussed. The controllable synthetic methods and the activity enhancement mechanism of state‐of‐the‐art SACs are also highlighted. Recent achievements in the electronic modification of SACs will provide an understanding of the structure–activity relationship for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.  相似文献

Selective CO2 reduction to formic acid or formate is the most technologically and economically viable approach to realize electrochemical CO2 valorization. Main group metal–based (Sn, Bi, In, Pb, and Sb) nanostructured materials hold great promise, but are still confronted with several challenges. Here, the current status, challenges, and future opportunities of main group metal–based nanostructured materials for electrochemical CO2 reduction to formate are reviewed. Firstly, the fundamentals of electrochemical CO2 reduction are presented, including the technoeconomic viability of different products, possible reaction pathways, standard experimental procedure, and performance figures of merit. This is then followed by detailed discussions about different types of main group metal–based electrocatalyst materials, with an emphasis on underlying material design principles for promoting the reaction activity, selectivity, and stability. Subsequently, recent efforts on flow cells and membrane electrode assembly cells are reviewed so as to promote the current density as well as mechanistic studies using in situ characterization techniques. To conclude a short perspective is offered about the future opportunities and directions of this exciting field.  相似文献

In this study, scalable, flame spray synthesis is utilized to develop defective ZnO nanomaterials for the concurrent generation of H2 and CO during electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). The designed ZnO achieves an H2/CO ratio of ≈1 with a large current density (j) of 40 mA cm?2 during long‐term continuous reaction at a cell voltage of 2.6 V. Through in situ atomic pair distribution function analysis, the remarkable stability of these ZnO structures is explored, addressing the knowledge gap in understanding the dynamics of oxide catalysts during CO2RR. Through optimization of synthesis conditions, ZnO facets are modulated which are shown to affect reaction selectivity, in agreement with theoretical calculations. These findings and insights on synthetic manipulation of active sites in defective metal‐oxides can be used as guidelines to develop active catalysts for syngas production for renewable power‐to‐X to generate a range of fuels and chemicals.  相似文献

Renewable‐electricity‐powered electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR) have been identified as an emerging technology to address the issue of rising CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. While the CO2RR has been demonstrated to be technically feasible, further improvements in catalyst performance through active sites engineering are a prerequisite to accelerate its commercial feasibility for utilization in large CO2‐emitting industrial sources. Over the years, the improved understanding of the interaction of CO2 with the active sites has allowed superior catalyst design and subsequent attainment of prominent CO2RR activity in literature. This review tracks the evolution of the understanding of CO2RR active sites on different electrocatalysts such as metals, metal‐oxides, single atoms, metal‐carbon, and subsequently metal‐free carbon‐based catalysts. Despite the tremendous research efforts in the field, many scientific questions on the role of various active sites in governing CO2RR activity, selectivity, stability, and pathways are still unanswered. These gaps in knowledge are highlighted and a discussion is set forth on the merits of utilizing advanced in‐situ and operando characterization techniques and machine learning (ML). Using this technique, the underlying mechanisms can be discerned, and as a result new strategies for designing active sites may be uncovered. Finally, this review advocates an interdisciplinary approach to discover and design CO2RR active sites (rather than focusing merely on catalyst activity) in a bid to stimulate practical research for industrial application.  相似文献

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is an effective means to generate renewable energy. It involves redox reactions, reduction of CO2 and oxidation of water, that leads to the production of solar fuel. Significant research effort has therefore been made to develop inexpensive and practically sustainable semiconductor‐based photocatalysts. The exploration of atomic‐level active sites on the surface of semiconductors can result in an improved understanding of the mechanism of CO2 photoreduction. This can be applied to the design and synthesis of efficient photocatalysts. In this review, atomic‐level reactive sites are classified into four types: vacancies, single atoms, surface functional groups, and frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs). These different photocatalytic reactive sites are shown to have varied affinity to reactants, intermediates, and products. This changes pathways for CO2 reduction and significantly impacts catalytic activity and selectivity. The design of a photocatalyst from an atomic‐level perspective can therefore be used to maximize atomic utilization efficiency and lead to a high selectivity. The prospects for fabrication of effective photocatalysts based on an in‐depth understanding are highlighted.  相似文献

The challenge in the artificial CO2 reduction to fuel is achieving high selective electrocatalysts. Here, a highly selective Cu2O/CuO heterostructure electrocatalyst is developed for CO2 electroreduction. The Cu2O/CuO nanowires modified by Ni nanoparticles exhibit superior catalytic performance with high faradic efficiency (95% for CO). Theoretical and experimental analyses show that the hybridization of Cu2O/CuO nanowires and Ni nanoparticles can not only adjust the d‐band center of electrocatalysts to enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity but also improve the adsorption of COOH* intermediates and suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction to promote the CO conversion efficiency during CO2 reduction reaction. An in situ Raman spectroscopic study further confirms the existence of COOH* species and the engineering intermediates adsorption. This work offers new insights for facile designing of nonprecious transition metal compound heterostructure for CO2 reduction reaction through adjusting the reaction pathway.  相似文献

Rational design of electrocatalysts toward efficient CO2 electroreduction has the potential to reduce carbon emission and produce value‐added chemicals. In this work, a strategy of constructing 2D confined‐space as molecular reactors for enhanced electrocatalytic CO2 reduction selectivity is demonstrated. Highly ordered 2D nanosheet lamella assemblies are achieved via weak molecular interaction of atomically thin titania nanosheets, a variety of cationic surfactants, and SnO2 nanoparticles. The interlayer spacings can be tuned from 0.9 to 3.0 nm by using different surfactant molecules. These 2D assemblies of confined‐space catalysts exhibit a strong size dependence of CO2 electroreduction selectivity, with a peak Faradaic efficiency of 73% for formate production and excellent electrochemical stability at an optimal interspacing of ≈2.0 nm. This work suggests great potential for constructing new molecular‐size reactors, for highly selective electrocatalytic CO2 reduction.  相似文献

An Si photoelectrode with a nanoporous Au thin film for highly selective and efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is presented. The nanoporous Au thin film is formed by electrochemical reduction of an anodized Au thin film. The electrochemical treatments of the Au thin film critically improve CO2 reduction catalytic activity of Au catalysts and exhibit CO Faradaic efficiency of 96% at 480 mV of overpotential. To apply the electrochemical pretreatment of Au films for PEC CO2RR, a new Si photoelectrode design with mesh‐type co‐catalysts independently wired at the front and the back of the photoelectrode is demonstrated. Due to the superior CO2RR activity of the nanoporous Au mesh and high photovoltage from Si, the Si photoelectrode with the nanoporous Au thin film mesh shows conversion of CO2 to CO with 91% Faradaic efficiency at positive potential than the CO2/CO equilibrium potential.  相似文献

Renewable-electricity-powered electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) is considered one of the most promising ways to convert exhaust CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels. Among various CO2RR products, CO is of great significance since it can be directly used as feedstock to produce chemical products through the Fischer–Tropsch process. However, the CO2-to-CO electrocatalytic process is often accompanied by a kinetically competing side reaction: H2 evolution reaction (HER). Designing electrocatalysts with tunable electronic structures is an attractive strategy to enhance CO selectivity. In this work, a CeNCl-CeO2 heterojunction-modified Ni catalyst is successfully synthesized with high CO2RR catalytic performance by the impregnation-calcination method. Benefiting from the strong electron interaction between the CeNCl-CeO2 heterojunction and Ni nanoparticles (NPs), the catalytic performance is greatly improved. Maximal CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) is up to 90% at −0.8 V (vs RHE), plus good stability close to 12 h. Detailed electrochemical tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results reveal that the introduction of the CeNCl-CeO2 heterojunction tunes the electronic structure of Ni NPs. The positively charged Ni center leads to an enhanced local electronic structure, thus promoting the activation of CO2 and the adsorption of *COOH.  相似文献

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) provides a potential pathway to mitigate challenges related to CO2 emissions. Pd nanoparticles have shown interesting properties as CO2RR electrocatalysts, while how different facets of Pd affect its performance in CO2 reduction to synthesis gas with controlled H2 to CO ratios has not been understood. Herein, nanosized Pd cubes and octahedra particles dominated by Pd(100) and Pd(111) facets are, respectively, synthesized. The Pd octahedra particles show higher CO selectivity (up to 95%) and better activity than Pd cubes and commercial particles. For both Pd octahedra and cubes, the ratio of H2/CO products is tunable between 1 and 2, a desirable ratio for methanol synthesis and the Fischer–Tropsch processes. Further studies of Pd octahedra in a 25 cm2 flow cell show that a total CO current of 5.47 A is achieved at a potential of 3.4 V, corresponding to a CO partial current density of 220 mA cm?2. In situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy studies show that regardless of facet Pd is transformed into Pd hydride (PdH) under reaction conditions. Density functional theory calculations show that the reduced binding energies of CO and HOCO intermediates on PdH(111) are key parameters to the high current density and Faradaic efficiency in CO2 to CO conversion.  相似文献

Copper (Cu) offers a means for producing value‐added fuels through the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2), i.e., the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), but designing Cu catalysts with significant Faradaic efficiency to C2+ products remains as a great challenge. This work demonstrates that the high activity and selectivity of Cu to C2+ products can be achieved by atomic‐scale spacings between two facets of Cu particles. These spacings are created by lithiating CuOx particles, removing lithium oxides formed, and electrochemically reducing CuOx to metallic Cu. Also, the range of spacing (ds) is confirmed via the 3D tomographs using the Cs‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (3D tomo‐STEM), and the operando X‐ray absorption spectra show that oxidized Cu reduces to the metallic state during the CO2RR. Moreover, control of ds to 5–6 Å allows a current density exceeding that of unmodified CuOx nanoparticles by about 12 folds and a Faradaic efficiency of ≈80% to C2+. Density functional theory calculations support that ds of 5–6 Å maximizes the binding energies of CO2 reduction intermediates and promotes C–C coupling reactions. Consequently, this study suggests that control of ds can be used to realize the high activity and C2+ product selectivity for the CO2RR.  相似文献

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) typically suffers from low selectivity and poor reaction rates that necessitate high overpotentials, which impede its possible application for CO2 capture, sequestration, or carbon‐based fuel production. New strategies to address these issues include the utilization of photoexcited charge carriers to overcome activation barriers for reactions that produce desirable products. This study demonstrates surface‐plasmon‐enhanced photoelectrochemical reduction of CO2 and nitrate (NO3?) on silver nanostructured electrodes. The observed photocurrent likely originates from a resonant charge transfer between the photogenerated plasmonic hot electrons and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (MO) acceptor energy levels of adsorbed CO2, NO3?, or their reductive intermediates. The observed differences in the resonant effects at the Ag electrode with respect to electrode potential and photon energy for CO2 versus NO3? reduction suggest that plasmonic hot‐carriers interact selectively with specific MO acceptor energy levels of adsorbed surface species such as CO2, NO3?, or their reductive intermediates. This unique plasmon‐assisted charge generation and transfer mechanism can be used to increase yield, efficiency, and selectivity of various photoelectrochemical processes.  相似文献

The catalyst layer of the cathode is arguably the most critical component of low‐temperature fuel cells and carbon dioxide (CO2) electrolysis cells because their performance is typically limited by slow oxygen (O2) and CO2 reduction kinetics. While significant efforts have focused on developing cathode catalysts with improved activity and stability, fewer efforts have focused on engineering the catalyst layer structure to maximize catalyst utilization and overall electrode and system performance. Here, we study the performance of cathodes for O2 reduction and CO2 reduction as a function of three common catalyst layer preparation methods: hand‐painting, air‐brushing, and screen‐printing. We employed ex‐situ X‐ray micro‐computed tomography (MicroCT) to visualize the catalyst layer structure and established data processing procedures to quantify catalyst uniformity. By coupling structural analysis with in‐situ electrochemical characterization, we directly correlate variation in catalyst layer morphology to electrode performance. MicroCT and SEM analyses indicate that, as expected, more uniform catalyst distribution and less particle agglomeration, lead to better performance. Most importantly, the analyses reported here allow for the observed differences over a large geometric volume as a function of preparation methods to be quantified and explained for the first time. Depositing catalyst layers via a fully‐automated air‐brushing method led to a 56% improvement in fuel cell performance and a significant reduction in electrode‐to‐electrode variability. Furthermore, air‐brushing catalyst layers for CO2 reduction led to a 3‐fold increase in partial CO current density and enhanced product selectivity (94% CO) at similar cathode potential but a 10‐fold decrease in catalyst loading as compared to previous reports.  相似文献

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to hydrocarbon fuels through solar energy provides a feasible channel for reducing CO2 emission and resource depletion. Nevertheless, severe charge recombination and high energy barrier limit the CO2 reduction efficiency. Herein, a surface amine-functionalized SnO2 with oxygen vacancies (A-Vo-SnO2) is fabricated to achieve visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Specifically, amino groups modified onto the surface of the catalyst can provide more active sites to promote the adsorption of CO2. Meanwhile, the synchronously induced oxygen defect level reduces the band-gap energy and expands the light-absorption region from UV light to visible light. The oxygen vacancies can modulate the electronic structure and work as the separation centers of spatial charges, thus promoting the interfacial charge transfer efficiency and providing more catalytic sites, as evidenced by experimental observation and theoretical calculation. As expected, this A-Vo-SnO2 exhibits a CH4 evolution rate of 17.27 µmol g−1 h−1 without adding sacrificial agent and co-catalyst, much higher than 5.98 µmol g−1 h−1 of pure SnO2. This work can provide significant inspiration for the design of defect engineering based on visible-light-driven photocatalysts towards photocatalytic CO2 conversion.  相似文献

An artificial photosynthesis system based on N‐doped ZnTe nanorods decorated with an N‐doped carbon electrocatalyst layer is fabricated via an all‐solution process for the selective conversion of CO2 to CO. Substitutional N‐doping into the ZnTe lattice decreases the bandgap slightly and improves the charge transfer characteristics, leading to enhanced photoelectrochemical activity. Remarkable N‐doping effects are also demonstrated by the N‐doped carbon layer that promotes selective CO2‐to‐CO conversion instead of undesired water‐to‐H2 reduction by providing active sites for CO2 adsorption and activation, even in the absence of metallic redox centers. The photocathode shows promising performance in photocurrent generation (?1.21 mA cm?2 at ?0.11 VRHE), CO selectivity (dominant CO production of ≈72%), minor H2 reduction (≈20%), and stability (corrosion suppression). The metal‐free electrocatalyst/photocatalyst combination prepared via a cost‐effective solution process exhibits high performance due to synergistic effects between them, and thus may find application in practical solar fuel production.  相似文献
