The life-history characteristics of the river blenny Salaria fluviatilis in a Mediterranean stream in north-east Spain have been studied. The maximum age observed was 4+ years in both sexes, although only age groups 0+ and 1+ years were well represented. For both sexes, growth was rapid between April and June (before the summer drought) and in October. The instantaneous rate of monthly growth (April to October) was positively correlated with water depth. All fish attained sexual maturity during their first year of life. Females spawned multiple times. Spawning occurred mainly from June to August, although older females (2+ years old) began in May. The relationship between fecundity and total length recorded for older females in the spring was not significantly different from that obtained for 1 year-old females in the summer. The mean diameter of ripe oocytes, however, was greater in older females. Larger eggs that were laid during a period of good food supply (spring) might have a higher probability of survival. The results suggest that female fecundity is affected by environmental conditions. The species is characterized by fast growth, early maturity, multiple spawning and limited longevity. This may be a good life-history strategy for small fish species in unstable environments, where adult mortality is high, variable or unpredictable. Some life-history traits of the river blenny suggest that this species might be vulnerable to more severe drought conditions than those associated with the Mediterranean climate.

Identifying the life-history strategies of fish and their associations with the surrounding environment is the basic foundation in the conservation and sustainable utilization of fish species. We examined the age, growth, and reproduction of Sarcocheilichthys nigripinnis using 352 specimens collected monthly from May 2009 to April 2010 in the Qingyi Stream. We found the sex ratio of this study population was 0.58:1(female:male),significantly different from expected 1:1.Females and males both comprised four age groups. The annuli on the scales were formed during February and March. No obvious between-sex difference was observed in length-weight and length-scale-radius relationships. The total length in back-calculation significantly increased with age for both sexes, but did not differ significantly at each age between the two sexes. An inflection point was observed in the growth curves given by the von Bertalanffy growth function for total weight. At this inflection point, fish were 3.95 years. Both sexes reach their 50% sex maturity at age 2,when females and males were 94.7 mm and 103.0 mm total length. The temporal pattern of the gonado-somatic index corresponded to a spawning period that occurred from April through July. The non-synchronicity of egg diameter in each mature ovary during the breeding period suggested these fish may be batch spawners. The absolute fecundity increased significantly with total length and weight, whereas no significant correlation was observed between the relative fecundity and body size.

Life-history theory predicts the occurrence of variation in the life-history traits of fish populations under different environmental conditions; however, most studies have focused on such variation between geographically separated populations. We compared breeding characteristics and life-history traits of the Japanese fluvial sculpin (Cottus pollux), a bottom-dwelling nest-holding fish, between two adjacent sites sub-divided by a weir along a stream course in central Japan. Males in the area with a lower abundance of nest sites reached sexual maturity at an earlier age and had a shorter life span than males in the area with sufficient nest abundance. Size-dependent male reproduction was found only in areas with a shortage of nest sites, supporting the assumption of competitive exclusion among males for nests. Females matured at the same age in both sites with no differences in age-specific growth rates and mortality. Our results provide evidence for life-history variation in age and size at maturity and age-specific mortality schedule of males in nest-holding fishes in a single stream population via different sexual selection regimes related to differences in nest abundance between sites.

Life-history traits of invasive fish in small Mediterranean streams
We compared the life-history traits of native and invasive fish species from Catalan streams in order to identify the characters of successful invasive fish species. Most of the exotic fish species were characterized by large size, long longevity, late maturity, high fecundity, few spawnings per year, and short reproductive span, whereas Iberian native species exhibited predominantly the opposite suite of traits. Species native to the southeastern Pyrenees watershed were also significantly different from species native to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula but not native to this watershed. Iberian exotic species come predominantly from large river basins, whereas Catalan streams (and other small, coastal river basins) correspond to basins and streams of a smaller size and different hydrology, with differences in species composition and life-history traits of fish. The occurrence and spread of invasive species was not significantly related to life-history traits but to introduction date. The successful prediction of future invasive species is limited due to small differences in life-history and ecological traits between native and exotic species. Fecundity, age at maturity, water quality flexibility, tolerance to pollution and habitat seem the most discriminating life-history variables. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The study describes some key elements of the reproductive biology, including spawning season, age at sexual maturity, fecundity and egg diameter of the native brown trout, Salmo trutta macrostigma, in a tributary of the Ceyhan River. A total of 197 brown trout (118 females and 79 males) were captured in 2000–2001 by electric fishing. In observations on monthly changes, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the monthly frequency distribution of egg diameter confirmed that spawning lasted from November to January. Some 27.7% of the females and 62.5% of the males attained sexual maturity in their second year. The smallest fork length (FL) of brown trout attaining sexual maturity was 17.4 cm for males and 17.8 cm for females. Mean fecundity in age groups II, III, IV and V were 360, 452, 693 and 1283 eggs per female, respectively. One 9‐year‐old female had a unique 3232 egg count. The mean fecundity of the sampled population was 554 eggs per fish, positively correlated with the FL (mm) (R = 0.8227 ) and body weight (R = 0.8130). The diameter of mature eggs in the spawning season ranged from 3.250 to 5.930 mm, with a 4.146 mm average. Mean egg diameter in age groups II, III, IV and V in the spawning season were 0.813, 3.799, 4.663 and 5.243 mm, respectively. Fecundity, egg weight and diameter were statistically different in all age groups.

To investigate the variability in the reproductive tactics of Acıgöl killifish (Aphanius transgrediens), one of the most seriously threatened freshwater teleost species, this study compared its reproductive ecology in two contrasting habitats that differ substantially in terms of stability of environmental parameters, particularly salinity regime (stable vs. unstable). Fish were sampled monthly from October 2013 to September 2014 with the aim of testing whether the reproductive life-history response of fish to stable and unstable conditions differed. The reproductive effort (gonad weight) of both sexes did not differ significantly between the two habitats, but females in the unstable habitat had significantly lower fecundity and larger eggs. The relationship between fecundity and fish size was stronger in the stable habitat, whereas the relationship was quite variable and uncertain in the unstable habitat. Fish born in the unstable habitat reached their first maturity at a smaller size than those in the stable habitat. The gonado-somatic index and the duration of hydrated eggs showed that reproduction continued from February to May in both habitats; nonetheless, a second spawning event occurred during July and August in the unstable habitat, which included the reproductive contributions of YOY individuals and older generations. This study’s results suggest that A. transgrediens employs varying reproductive strategies against environmental instability in its restricted unique range. This may have further implications for the ways in which habitat-specific conservation methods are used.

This study determined if a spatial hierarchy existed with respect to reach-scale habitat, subwatershed-scale, and watershed-scale geomorphology and land use stressors on fish assemblages in southeastern U.S. coastal plain streams. During May–October 2009–2012, fishes were sampled by seine, and habitat was assessed at 50 reaches in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin (USA). Using partial redundancy analysis (pRDA) a variance decomposition procedure was used to partial out influences of confounding covariables at each spatial scale. Reach-scale habitat had the strongest association with the assemblage. Stream width, depth, aquatic vegetation and human debris cover, rapid habitat assessment score, and large woody debris volume were the most important variables. At subwatershed and watershed scales, natural and anthropogenic characteristics were important, including elevation, gradient, watershed area, wetland cover, stream density, road, dam and oil/gas well densities. Six species were associated most strongly with the watershed variables, compared to reach- and subwatershed-scale variables. These species had more “r-selected” life-history strategies (e.g., smaller eggs, shorter life spans, multiple broods, longer spawning season, and trophic generalists). In contrast, most species that were associated strongest with reach-scale variables exhibited more “k-selected” life-history traits (e.g., larger eggs, longer life spans, shorter spawning season, single brood, and trophic specialists).

Variation among populations in extrinsic mortality schedules selects for different patterns of investment in key life-history traits. We compared life-history phenotypes among 12 populations of the live-bearing fish Brachyrhaphis episcopi. Five populations co-occurred with predatory fish large enough to prey upon adults, while the other seven populations lacked these predators. At sites with large predatory fish, both sexes reached maturity at a smaller size. Females of small to average length that co-occurred with predators had higher fecundity and greater reproductive allotment than those from populations that lacked predators, but the fecundity and reproductive allotment of females one standard deviation larger than mean body length did not differ among sites. In populations with large predatory fish, offspring mass was significantly reduced. In each population, fecundity, offspring size and reproductive allotment increased with female body size. When controlling for maternal size, offspring mass and number were significantly negatively correlated, indicating a phenotypic trade-off. This trade-off was non-linear, however, because reproductive allotment still increased with brood size after controlling for maternal size. Similar differences in life-history phenotypes among populations with and without large aquatic predators have been reported for Brachyrhaphis rhabdophora in Costa Rica and Poecilia reticulata (a guppy) in Trinidad. This may represent a convergent adaptation in life-history strategies attributable to predator-mediated effects or environmental correlates of predator presence.

Synopsis We compared life-history traits such as fecundity, sex ratio, reproductive cycle, age at sexual maturity, embryonic period, egg size, early growth and morphology in two clonal strains (PAN-RS and DAN) of the mangrove killifish, Rivulus marmoratus, under constant rearing conditions. We found a positive relationship between growth and reproductive effort. Fecundity was significantly higher in the PAN-RS strain than in the DAN strain. The sex ratio was significantly different, with DAN producing more primary males than PAN-RS. Spawning and ovulation cycle did not clearly differ between the strains. PAN-RS showed a significantly higher growth rate than DAN from 0 to 100 days after hatching, however, age at sexual maturity, embryonic period, egg size, and morphometric and meristic characteristics (vertebral and fin-ray counts) did not differ between the two strains. The high fecundity of PAN-RS may provide an increased chance of offspring survival, while the attainment of sexual maturity at a smaller size in DAN may allow them to invest earlier in reproduction to increase breeding success. Variations in the life-history traits of PAN-RS and DAN may be adaptive strategies for life in their natural habitat, which consists of mangrove estuaries with a highly variable environment.

Aspects of the reproductive biology of the sprat in inshore waters of the west coast of Scotland were investigated from August 1970 to July 1972. Spawning in sprat lasts for a period of five to six months, starting in February-March. Minimum size of maturity is 88–90 mm in both sexes but males tend to mature earlier in the season. Sprat shed their eggs in 7–10 batches. There is generally a higher proportion of females in the population. The fecundity ranges from 8700 to 46,600 in fish between 95 and 146 mm in length. It is significantly correlated to weight, length and age.

Growth patterns of the 1982 year-class, individual growth patterns, age and size at sexual maturity and longevity in females of the river-sculpin,Cottus hangiongensis (Cottidae), were examined along the course of the Daitobetsu River of southern Hokkaido, Japan. Growth of females slightly varied both along the river course and among individual fishes: slow growth occurs in females from the lower reaches, while more rapid growth occurs in females from upstream areas. Body size and age at the first sexual maturity of females slightly increased towards the upstream, from 52 mm SL and 2 years in the most downstream area to 72 mm SL and 2–3 years in the uppermost site. Longevity was estimated to be 7 years in the downstream areas and 8–9 years in the upstream sites. These results suggest that female life history varies along the course of the river and thus allow us to consider the following alternative reproductive tactics: when females stay in the lower reaches, they attain sexual maturity at a smaller body size and younger age, and have a small clutch size, but when females migrate into the upper reaches, their maturity is delayed until they reach a larger body size and older age, and have a greater clutch size.

Life-history variations in male and female fluvial sculpins, Cottus nozawae, were studied in a small mountain stream in Hokkaido, Japan, primarily by using capture-mark-recapture methods. At three study areas established along the stream course, the majority of marked sculpins were recaptured in their original location over one or more years, indicating their long-term occupation of each restricted habitat area. Sculpin densities increased toward the upstream habitats, whereas individual growth rates were more rapid downstream. In both sexes, sculpins distributed downstream matured at a larger body size and later in life than upstream sculpins, clearly demonstrating a clinal variation in these respects. A comparison of life-history variations in C. nozawae with those in amphidromous C. hangiongensis suggests that intrapopulational life-history variations in the former might be environmentally induced, and that one of the most important determinants for the variations in Cottus species might be population density.

An anadromous population (trachurus form) and three freshwater populations (leiurus form) of the three-spined stickleback,Gasterosteus aculeatus, in central Japan were compared with one another in the reproductive traits: body length at maturity, egg size, clutch size, the swell of abdomen and the number of eggs per nest. The anadromous fish which become larger in body size at maturity spawn eggs smaller in size and greater in number than the freshwater fish. The abdomen swell of gravid females expressed by the proportion of abdomen width to body length was greater in the freshwater fish. The anadromous male fish collected a mean of 2,638 eggs with a range of 1,119 to 4,052 eggs from about 6–7 females. In the three freshwater (the Yamayoke, the Tsuya and the Jizo) populations, males must have mated with about 9–22, 7–18 and 4–7 females respectively. It seems that theleiurus form increases its reproductive success by its much more mating opportunities and the parental efforts of nesting males as well as by spawning large eggs. Furthermore, among the freshwater populations, the Jizo one inhabiting the upper stream was clearly larger in body size, in egg size and in clutch size than the Yamayoke and the Tsuya ones which inhabit stable waterbodies with springs. It is possible that the Jizo population adopted the strategy of spawning a few large eggs as an adaptation to its habitat. The causal and functional explanations in reproductive characteristics among the four populations are discussed in regard to differences in the environmental conditions.

Riverine fishery in Kenya has witnessed profound changes since the 1950s, especially after independence (in 1963) when watersheds on the south‐eastern slopes of Mt Kenya were opened up for settlement. In particular, rainbow trout populations have declined essentially resulting from anthropogenic changes through over‐exploitation and/or degraded habitats. While there still are self‐sustaining rainbow trout populations in this stream among others they are in decline an indication that changes that have occurred on the watershed have altered their sizes, age and growth. The study was carried out in the Sagana, a third‐order stream, which rises at about 4000 m altitude on the south‐eastern slope of Mt Kenya, to obtain and document information on population sizes, age and growth of rainbow trout populations and to relate them with those recorded in the 1950s when trout streams were pristine (with little human influence). Stations were fished bi‐monthly from 1996 to 1998 and later for 6 months in 2002. Information on age and growth was obtained by use of annual marks, tagging fish of known age, and by validating their age using captive fish of known age. The minimum mean back‐calculated length at age for age one rainbow trout was 13.09 cm in upstream station and 15.10 cm for downstream stations. However, there was no significant difference in mean back‐calculated lengths at age for all years between fish in upstream and downstream stations (t‐test, t = −0.01, P = 0.99). Although female fish showed higher mean annual back‐calculated length increments than males, there was no significant difference in mean back‐calculated lengths at age between sexes (t‐test, t = −0.27, P = 0.80). The rate of growth in length was rapid for 1‐year‐old fish and declined in the second and third years. This study observed that most of the fish were small with only a few reaching more than 2 years of age because of overfishing. There are good reasons for optimism about the future of trout populations in this stream but concerted efforts are required to rehabilitate them. If trout populations are to increase, a management strategy is required to reduce fishing pressure and to maintain stream fishery against competing needs for resources in the catchments.

The age, growth, reproduction and resource development status of Ptychidio jordani, as a critically endangered freshwater fish in the Hongshui River, China, was studied in this work. A total of 525 specimens were collected monthly using the cages and gillnets from October 2021 to September 2022 in the Hongshui River. The scale was used for age determination, and the maximum age for both female and male was estimated to be 5 years and 3 years, respectively. Female and male P. jordani showed different growth patterns, which were expressed as Lt = 261.3 (1-e−0.4885(t−0.1476)) and Lt = 251.2 (1-e−0.4758(t+0.9643)), respectively. The overall sex ratio was 1:0.47 (female:male). Female attained sex maturity at 2.34 years (192 mm body length). Month variation of the gonad somatic index indicated that the spawning period occurred from April to October. The absolute fecundity was estimated at 9046 ± 3434 eggs per individual, and the relative fecundity was 38.08 ± 15.77 eggs per gram. The exploitation rate of female and male was 0.233 and 0.495, which indicated that P. jordani was not overfishing. This study provided data on the key life-history traits of P. jordani, which has not been known previously and is essential for conservation strategy and policy development.

The mean age of a population of agile frogs (Rana dalmatina) from the Iberian Peninsula was estimated using mark and recapture and skeletochronology. Life-history parameters, including growth rate, body length, age and size at maturity, sexual dimorphism and longevity, were studied. The regression between age and snout-vent length (SVL) was highly significant in both sexes. Males reached sexual maturity at two years of age, although sometimes they can reach it at only one year of age. The average SVL at maturity was 51.75 mm (standard error (SE) = 0.71; n = 45). Females reached sexual maturity at two years of age with an average SVL of 62.14 mm (SE = 2.20; n = 14). A subset of the female population reached sexual maturity at three years of age. Growth was rapid until sexual maturity was reached. There was an overlap of SVL between different age classes. Growth was continuous, fulfilling the conditions of Von Bertalanffy's model. The growth coefficient (K) was 0.840 in males and 0.625 in females. The maximum SVL was greater in females (73.00 mm) than in males (59.50 mm). Sexual dimorphism was significantly biased towards females in all age classes. The maximum longevity observed was 6 years in females and 8 years in males. Management strategies for agile frogs should take into account factors such as these life-history characteristics.

Several key life-history attributes in a tropical live-bearing fish, Brachyrhaphis episcopi, have previously been shown to differ between populations that co-occur with large predatory fish (Characin sites) and those that do not (Rivulus sites). Here we show that differences between Characin and Rivulus localities are also repeatable over time; patterns observed in the wet season also persisted during the dry. Both sexes reached maturity at a smaller size at Characin sites. Although there was no difference in fecundity between larger females living in different predator communities, smaller females at Characin sites produced more offspring. Females also produced smaller offspring at Characin localities. These differences are remarkably similar to those reported in two other species of live-bearing fish, B. rhabdophora and Poecilia reticulata suggesting possible convergent adaptation in life-history strategies due to predator-mediated effects or correlates thereof. We also found seasonal changes in life-history traits that were independent of predator community. In the wet season, mature males were larger, females allocated more to reproduction, and offspring mass was also greater. The results of our study generate testable predictions using B. episcopi to further our understanding of life-history evolution.

Theory predicts that populations of animals with late maturity, low fecundity, large body size and low body growth rates will have low potential rates of population increase at low abundance. If this is true, then these traits may be used to predict the intrinsic rate of increase for species or populations, as well as extinction risks. We used life-history and population data for 63 stocks of commercially exploited fish species from the northeast Atlantic to test relationships between life-history parameters and the rate of population increase at low abundance. We used cross-taxonomic analyses among stocks and among species, and analyses that accounted for phylogenetic relationships. These analyses confirmed that large-bodied, slow-growing stocks and species had significantly lower rates of recruitment and adult production per spawning adult at low abundance. Furthermore, high ages at maturity were significantly correlated with low maximum recruit production. Contrary to expectation, fecundity was significantly negatively related to recruit production, due to its positive relationship with maximum body size. Our results support theoretical predictions, and suggest that a simply measured life-history parameter can provide a useful tool for predicting rates of recovery from low population abundance.
