The effects of thermoperiods on diapause induction under continuous darkness (DD), continuous light (LL), and an L12:D12 photoperiod were investigated in the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a short‐day species. Diapause could be induced by thermoperiod under both LL and DD; however, in the range of 24–30 °C, lower incidences of diapause were observed under LL than under DD. The critical cryophase was found to be dependent on the mean temperature of the thermoperiod applied. Although the thermoperiodic response pattern was similar under LL and DD, the incidence of diapause was higher under LL when the duration of the cryophase did not exceed 12 h. In contrast, when the duration of the cryophase was longer than 12 h, the incidence of diapause under LL was lower or equal to that under DD. When a thermoperiod of 24 °C (cryophase) and 28 °C (thermophase) was applied, the incidence of diapause was higher under LL than under DD, regardless of the duration of the cryophase. Thermoperiodic responses under a photoperiod of L12:D12 and under DD further revealed that induction of diapause was strongly influenced by the photophase temperature. Moreover, the incidence of diapause was lower when the thermophase coincided with the photophase than when the cryophase coincided with the photophase.  相似文献

The effect of four different light regimes on growth was studied in lenok, Brachymystax lenok. Fish with average weights of 5.5 g were subjected to four different photoperiods (0L:24D, 6L:18D, 12L:12D and 24L:0D) for 35 days. The specific growth rate (SGR) of lenok in 24‐h darkness had a significantly higher SGR than those in the continuous light regime (P < 0.05); however, there was no significant difference among fish exposed to 6L:18D, 12L:12D and 24L:0D photoperiods. There was a tendency for higher food intake over the light period extension from 0L to 24L, and feed intake was significantly higher in the continuous light group than in 24‐h darkness (P < 0.05). No significant difference in feed conversion efficiency (FCE) was observed between fish exposed to 0L:24D and 6L:18D photoperiods, however, the FCE in both photoperiods was significantly higher than that in the other two groups. The final survival rate of juveniles varied from 79.67 to 95.33%, with significant differences among experimental groups. Fish tested in continuous illumination spent much more energy on respiration and excretion while depositing less energy for growth than in the other photoperiods. In contrast, fish in 24‐h darkness deposited more energy for growth and spent less energy on respiration and excretion. Results show that photoperiod manipulation can affect growth, and that a continuous dark regime could improve growth in lenok at this stage of development.  相似文献

The adult emergence rhythm of Telenomus busseolae, an egg parasitoid of Sesamia nonagrioides, was examined when parasitoids were exposed to different light-dark regimes. Most of the adult parasitoids emerged throughout the whole period of the photoperiodic cycle. Peak male emergence occurred 2–5 hours earlier than that of females. Adult emergence was asynchronous in continuous darkness or light. However, regimes of alternative light and dark phases such as L4:D20, L8:D16, L12:D12, L16:D8 and L20:D4 h generated a population rhythm with a period length of 24 hours. The peak of the emergence activity moves from the scotophase to the middle of the photophase with an increase of the photophase from 4 to 20 h. Rhythmical activity of adults was synchronised within 2 cycles when immature stages of parasitoid grow under continuous light conditions (LL) and then transferred to L12:D12. Moreover, emergence rhythm persisted and continued in a free-run with a period length of less than 24 hours by transferring a rhythmic culture from L12:D12 h to LL or RR (continuous red light) conditions, indicating the existence of a circadian rhythm. The ecological implications of the expression rhythm relate to better survival of the parasitoids.  相似文献

Several species of Orius Wolff are used in biological control of thrips in protected cultivations in temperate regions, but some of them show reproductive diapause, compromising the efficiency of these agents of biological control. There are no reports on the biology of the neotropical species Orius thyestes Herring under different environmental conditions. The purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of photoperiod on reproduction and longevity of this predator. Nymphs were kept in petri dishes in climatic chambers at 28+/-1 degree C, 70+/-10% RH and under the photoperiods of 12L:12D, 11L:13D, 10 L:14D e 09L:15D. The mating adults were kept in petri dishes with Bidens pilosa L. Asteraceae inflorescences as oviposition substracts and eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) as food. The pre-oviposition and oviposition periods, fecundity and longevity were evaluated and O. thyestes did not show reprodutive diapause in all photoperiod conditions established. The mean number of eggs obtained per female decreased with the reduction of the photophase, with a difference (P < 0.05) between the values obtained in 12h and 9h of photophase. Longevity of females and males under 9h photophase was shorter (P < 0.05) than in all other photoperiods tested. The knowledge of the biology of the natural enemy under different conditions allows to optimise the mass rearing and to predict the performance of the predator in different photoperiods which may occur along the year and in greenhouses.  相似文献

Circadian rhythm of feeding, oviposition, and emergence of boll weevil adults were determined at five different photophases (24, 14, 12, 10, and 0 hours) and a constant 27℃ temperature, 65% RH in the laboratory. Squares from Petri dishes, where they were exposed to boll weevil females, were removed and examined for feeding and oviposition punctures every 4 hours during daylight (0700-1900 h) and every 12 h at night (1900-0700 h) over eight consecutive days. Cohorts of randomly selected egg-punctured squares were sampled from ovipositing females at 0700, 1100, 1500, and 1900 during 24 hours and under different photophase treatments, and maintained in Petri dishes at 27 + I℃, 65% RH. Dishes were observed twice daily (1900 and 0700 h) for adults emerging at day or night. Circadian rhythm of oviposition was not affected by the length of the photophase. The boll weevil has round-the-clock circadian rhythm of oviposition, with a daytime preference. We observed that 82.4%-86.0% of the boll weevil eggs were deposited between 0700 and 1900 h, and 14.0%-17.6% between 1900 and 0700 h during a 24-h period. Feeding of boll weevil females in photoperiods 24:0 h (complete light) and 0:24 h (complete darkness) did not significantly change between 0700-1900 h versus 1900-0700 h, while the d .ally cycle of light and darkness in other photoperiods significantly increased the feeding punctures from 0700-1900 compared with 1900-0700 h. The circadian rhythm of emergence depended significantly on the time of oviposition and the length of the photophase. Investigation of boll weevil circadian rhythm provides a better understanding of boll weevil ecology and reveals potential weak links for improving control technologies targeting their reproductive strategies.  相似文献

The effects of varying photophase and altitude of origin on the phase angle difference (Ψ) of the circadian rhythm of oviposition during entrainment to light-dark (LD) cycles and the aftereffects of such photophases on the period of the free-running rhythm (τ) in constant darkness (DD) were evaluated in two Himalayan strains of Drosophila ananassae, the high-altitude (HA) strain from Badrinath (5,123 m above sea level=ASL) and the low-altitude (LA) strain from Firozpur (179 m ASL). The Ψ (i.e., the hours from lights-on of the LD cycle to oviposition median) of both strains was determined in LD cycles in which the photophase at 100 lux varied from 6 to 18 h/24 h. The HA strain was entrained by all LD cycles except the one with 6 h photophase in which it was weakly rhythmic, but the LA strain was entrained by only three LD cycles with photophases of 10, 12, and 14 h, but photophases of 6, 8, 16, and 18 h rendered it arrhythmic. Lights-off transition of LD cycles was the phase-determining signal for both strains as oviposition medians of the HA strain occurred∼6 h prior to lights-off, while those of the LA strain occurred∼1 h after lights-off. The Ψ of the HA strain increased from∼2 h in 8 h photophase to∼11 h in 18 h photophase, while that of the LA strain increased from∼11 h in 10 h photophase to∼15 h in 14 h photophase. The aftereffects of photophase of the prior entraining LD cycles on τ in DD were determined by transferring flies from LD cycles to DD. The τ of the HA strain increased from∼19 to∼25 h when transferred to DD from LD 8:16 and LD 18:6 cycles, respectively, whereas the τ of the LA strain increased from∼26 to∼28 h when transferred to DD from LD 10:14 and LD 14:10 cycles, respectively. Thus, these results demonstrate that the photophases of entraining LD cycles and the altitude of origin affected several parameters of entrainment and the period of the free-running rhythm of these strains.  相似文献

-The effect of photoperiod on growth of juvenile giant freshwater prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man, was tested. The prawns were divided into four groups and each group was reared under one of the following light-dark conditions: continuous darkness (L0:D24), 12 hr light: 12 hr dark (L12:D12), 16 hr light: 8 hr dark (L16:D8), and 20 hr light: 4 hr dark (L20:D4). Body size was determined at the age of 45, 75, and 110 days by measuring total length, orbital length, and carapace length; body weight was determined at the age of 110 days. At 110 days of age, the prawns reared under L0:D24 photoperiod were significantly longer and heavier than those reared under other light-dark conditions. The survival rate of the prawns reared under L0:D24 photoperiod was also higher than that of other groups. This study indicates a positive effect of continuous darkness on growth and survival rate of juvenile giant freshwater prawns, M. rosenbergii.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of light intensity and duration (photoperiod) on the sporulation (discharge of primary conidia) and conidia germination (from non-infective primary conidia to infective capilliconidia) of Neozygites floridana isolates from Tetranychus urticae originating from Norway and Brazil. Two light intensities (40 and 208 μmol m−2 s−1), three photoperiods (24 h of continuous light (24 h D), 12 h of darkness followed by 12 h of light (12 h D: 12 h L) and 24 h of continuous darkness (24 h D)) and two temperatures (18 °C and 23 °C) were tested. The fungus produced similar amounts of primary conidia and capilliconidia at 12 h D:12 h and 24 h D, indicating that the fungus discharges almost all of its conidia during the first 12 h of darkness. Light had less of an effect on the production of primary conidia than on capilliconidia formation. At 24 h L, capilliconidia formation was significantly lower for all tested light intensities, temperatures and isolates compared to 12 h D:12 h L and 24 h D. At both light intensities, 24 h L resulted in a significantly lower capilliconidia formation for the Norwegian isolate compared to the Brazilian isolate. Our data suggest that, even though 24 h L reduced sporulation, some capilliconidia formation may occur at the low light intensities found on the underside of strawberry leaves during parts of the day as well as the top of a non-shaded strawberry leaf during the dim evening and morning hours in the tropics and during the dim, long summer days in temperate regions.  相似文献

Abstract. The effects of thermoperiods on diapause induction in continuous darkness or under a 12 : 12 h LD photoperiod were investigated in the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly, a typical short‐day species. The diapause response curves both at different constant temperatures and at the thermocycle of format CT x: (24 ? x) h (16 : 28 °C) under continuously dark rearing conditions showed that the incidence of diapause depended mainly on whether or not the mean temperature was ≤20 °C or >20 °C. If the mean temperature was ≤20 °C, all individuals entered diapause; if >20 °C, the incidence of diapause declined gradually with increasing mean temperatures. The thermocycle (CT 12 : 12 h) with a series of different cryophases (8–22 °C) and thermophases (24–32 °C) under continuous darkness demonstrated a cryophase response threshold temperature of approximately 19 °C and a thermophase response threshold temperature of approximately 31 °C. Thermoperiodic amplitude (temperature difference between cryophase and thermophase) was shown to have a significant influence on diapause induction at the mean temperatures of 22, 23 and 24 °C, but not at ≥25 °C. Thermoperiodic responses under LD 12 : 12 h clearly showed that the incidence of diapause was influenced strongly by the photophase temperature. The thermoperiod under LD 12 : 12 h induced a much lower incidence of diapause than the thermoperiod with the same temperature in continuous darkness. The ecological significance of thermoperiodic induction of diapause in this species is discussed.  相似文献

The metamorphic rate of Rana pipiens tadpoles was studied under different photoperiods, daylengths, and feeding schedules. Tail resorption and hindlimb growth and development induced by immersion in 30 μg/l thyroxine (T4) were accelerated under longer photoperiods and continuous light when 6L: 18D, 12L: 12D, 18L: 6D, and 24L regimes were compared. Constant light exposure did not produce faster development than an 18 hr photoperiod, and initially was less effective. The rate of spontaneous and T4-induced metamorphosis was greater the shorter the day on 9L:9D, 12L: 12D, or 15L: 15D cycles, although all groups received the same overall amount of light, but in different dosages. When feeding schedule but not the LD cycle was varied, groups of tadpoles fed on 18, 24, or 30 hr regimes showed no differences in growth and development rate on 19L: 5D, and only random variations under continuous light. Differences in metamorphic rate on 18, 24, or 30 hr days are not due to the feeding schedules, but to the LD cycles. From these experiments we conclude that illumination, particularly the length and frequency of the photoperiod, affects the utilization of T4. Development rates independent of the total amount of illumination, but related to daylength and light schedule, suggest interaction of light with an endogenous timing mechanism.  相似文献

Host plant effects of tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., and chickweed, Stellaria media (L.) Vill., foliage infected and uninfected with Tomato spotted wilt virus (family Bunyaviridae, genus Tospovirus, TSWV) on the ovipositional preferences of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), and tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca (Hinds), were investigated for whole plants in the greenhouse. In addition, the preference for leaf disks from the same host plants was investigated under a range of temperatures, 15-30 degrees C at a photoperiod of 12:12 (L:D) h, and at three photoperiods, 6:18, 12:12, and 18:6, at 20 degrees C in no-choice and choice studies conducted in growth chambers. In a choice test, F. fusca oviposited significantly more eggs per whole plant foliage over a 7-d period than F. occidentalis by an average ratio of 3:1 over both tomato and chickweed. The optimum temperature for oviposition of F. occidentalis and F. fusca was 24.5 and 24.9 degrees C, respectively. Both species laid significantly more eggs under the longest daylight hours tested, 18:6, in the choice study. Temperature and photoperiod did not significantly interact in terms of thrips ovipositional preference. Ovipositional preference for chickweed or tomato foliage was different for each thrips species in the choice and no-choice tests. However, both thrips species laid significantly more eggs per square centimeter of leaf area in chickweed than in tomato in the whole plant choice test.  相似文献

Synergic contribution of light and temperature is known to cause a paradoxical masking effect (inhibition of activity by bright light and high temperature) on various rhythms of animals. The present study reports the paradoxical masking effects of 1000-lux photophase at 25°C on the locomotor activity rhythm of Drosophila malerkotliana. Flies were subjected to light (L)-dark (D) 12:12 cycles wherein the photophase was varied from 10 to 1000 lux, whereas the scotophase was set to 0 lux in these and subsequent LD cycles. At 10, 100, and 500 lux, the flies were diurnal; however, at 1000 lux they were nocturnal. Transfer from LD 12:12 cycles to continuous darkness (DD) initiated free-running rhythmicity in all flies. Free-running rhythms of the flies switched from the 10-lux to the 500-lux groups started from the last activity-onset phase of the rhythm following 3–5 transient cycles, suggesting involvement of the circadian pacemaker. In contrast, the free-running rhythm of the flies of the 1000-lux group began abruptly from the last lights-on phase of the LD cycle, indicating noninvolvement of the pacemaker. Furthermore, all flies showed nocturnal activity in the two types of LD 12:12 cycles when the photophase was 1000 lux. The first type of LD cycles had three succeeding photophases of 100, 1000, and again 100 lux, whereas the second type of LD cycles had only one photophase of 1000 lux, but the LD 12:12 cycles were reversed to DL 12:12 cycles. Apparently, the combined effects of light and temperature caused such paradoxical masking effects. This hypothesis was tested by repeating the above experiments at 20°C. Flies in all experiments exhibited a diurnal activity pattern, even when the photophase was 1000 lux. Thus, the present study demonstrates that the paradoxical masking effect in D. malerkotliana was caused by the additive influence of light intensity and temperature. This strategy appears to have physiological significance, i.e., to shun and thus protect against the bright photophase at high temperature in the field. (Author correspondence: )  相似文献

This study analyzed the role of day length in regulation of seasonal body fattening and testicular growth in a latitudinal Palaearctic-Indian migrant, the redheaded bunting (Emberiza bruniceps). When exposed to increasing photoperiods (hours of light: hours of darkness; 11.5L:12.5D, 12L:12D, 12.5L:11.5D, 13L:11D, 14L:10D, and 18L:6D) for 9-12 weeks, buntings responded in a photoperiod-dependent manner and underwent growth and regression cycle under photoperiods of > or =12 hr per day. Also, the response to a long photoperiod of birds that were held under natural photoperiods at 27 degrees N for 2 years was similar to those who arrived the same year from their breeding grounds ( approximately 40 degrees N), suggesting that the experience of higher amplitude day-night (light-dark, LD) cycles during migratory and breeding seasons were not critical for the subsequent response (initiation-termination-reinitiation) cycle. Another experiment examined entrainment of the circadian photoperiodic rhythm in buntings by subjecting them to T=24+/-2 hr LD-cycles with 8 hr photophase and to T=22 and 24 hr with 11 hr photophase. The results showed a reduction in critical day length under T=22 hr LD-cycle. In the last experiment, we constructed an action spectrum for photoperiodic induction by exposing birds for 4.5 weeks to 13L:11D of white (control), blue (450 nm), or red (640 nm) light at irradiances ranging from 0.028 to 1.4 W m(-2). The threshold light irradiance for photoinduction was about 10-fold higher for blue light, than for red and white lights. These results conclude that the daily light of the environment regulates the endogenous program that times seasonal responses in body fattening and testicular cycles of the redheaded bunting.  相似文献

Groups of juvenile tench (7.02 ± 0.28 g) were reared under four different light regimes; blue light, red light (80 Wm−2 12L:12D photoperiod) white light (912 ± 210 lux, 80 Wm−2, 12L:12D photoperiod) and no light (0 lux) (0L:24D). Visibility of fish out of shelters was used as an indicator of activity and was monitored by video recording. Blood plasma cortisol concentrations were also measured. Fish under blue or white light were significantly less active during the photophase than those under red or no light (P < 0.01). Red light produced similar activity patterns to fish receiving 24 h darkness. Plasma cortisol concentrations were also significantly influenced (P < 0.05) with the fish under white light having the highest plasma cortisol concentration (317 ± 62 ng cm−3) compared to fish in the dark treatment (106 ± 36 ng cm−3). Thus, the provision of coloured light filters increases activity in juvenile tench and may reduce their intrinsic stress level.  相似文献

Abstract:  The present laboratory experiments have been carried out to investigate rhythms in various life events, viz. mating, oviposition, hatching, moulting, pupation and eclosion, of an aphidophagous ladybird beetle, Cheilomenes sexmaculata under laboratory conditions. Incidences of mating and eclosion occurred mostly (66% and 73% respectively) in photophase. While oviposition, hatching, moulting and pupation occurred during scotophase with the peaks of the former two distributed between time intervals 12:00–15:00 h and 21:00–00:00 h respectively. Confinement of life events that are associated with vulnerable stages in scotophase might be an adaptation to prevent their exposure to natural enemies.  相似文献

The effects of different isolates of the tomato spotted wilt tospovirus (TSWV), host plants, and temperatures on Frankliniella fusca (Hinds) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), the most important vector of TSWV in North Carolina, were measured in the laboratory. Thrips were reared at either 18.3, 23.9, or 29.4 °C until adult eclosion on excised leaves of Datura stramonium L. or Emilia sonchifolia (L.). Plants were either infected with the TSWV isolates CFL or RG2, or left uninfected (control). The results revealed a positive relationship between larval survival and temperature, regardless of host plant or TSWV isolate. Both survival to adult and percentage transmission of TSWV by F. fusca were significantly affected by the interaction between host plant and TSWV isolate. The consequence of this interaction was that the cohort‐based percentage transmission from infected E. sonchifolia plants for CFL was 1.3‐fold greater than that of RG2, whereas the percentage transmission from infected D. stramonium plants for RG2 was twice that of CFL. Both host plant and TSWV isolates showed significant effects on thrips development time to adult and head capsule width of adult thrips, as well as on the incidence of thrips infection with TSWV. The infection status of these thrips was determined by ELISA for the NSs viral protein. Infected thrips reared on infected host foliage took longer to develop to adult and were smaller than non‐infected thrips which had also been reared on infected host foliage, demonstrating a direct effect of the TSWV on thrips. However, non‐infected thrips reared on non‐infected leaves took longer to develop than non‐infected thrips reared on infected leaves, suggesting an effect of the plant tissue on thrips. In addition, adult thrips reared on TSWV‐infected D. stramonium at 29.4 °C developed smaller head capsules than thrips developing on infected foliage at lower temperatures and on non‐infected leaves of D. stramonium or E. sonchifolia. Both TSWV isolates and host plants differentially affected females more than males. In conclusion, both the infection of thrips by TSWV and TSWV‐mediated changes in host plant quality were found to have significant biological effects on F. fusca.  相似文献

Abstract:  Diapause was induced in a Central European population of Ips typographus grown at 20°C when the day length decreased below 16 h [50% diapause incidence occurred in the 14.7:9.3 h L:D (light:dark) regime]. The non-diapausing adults fed on days 2–6 and 10–14 after the ecdysis and swarmed after the second feeding bout with chorionated eggs in the ovaries and sperm in the spermiducts. Neither gonads nor the flight muscles matured and no swarming occurred in the diapausing adults. The development from egg to adult took about 34 days in both 18:6 h (no diapause) and 12:12 h L:D (diapause) regimes, but it was extended by up to 30% without diapause induction when only larvae or pupae were exposed to L:D 12:12 h. Diapause was induced in insects reared at L:D 12:12 h through the last larval and the pupal instars and/or in the adult stage. Temperature ≥ 23°C prevented diapause induction at L:D 12:12 h but diapause occurred at L:D 14:10 h associated with 26:6°C thermoperiod. The effect of thermoperiods on the developmental rate requires further research. Exposure of the non-diapausing adults to 5°C for several days blocked feeding and evoked a diapause-like state, whereas diapausing adults fed and their gonads slowly developed at this temperature. Diapausing adults exposed in forest to low night temperatures and transferred in October to 20°C readily reproduced at 18:6, but not 12:12 h L:D photoperiods. After 2-months at 5°C and darkness, they became insensitive to the photoperiod, matured and most of them also swarmed at 20°C in the 12:12 h L:D regime. In a Scandinavian population, diapause occurred at 18:6 h L:D and was terminated either by exposure to 5°C or by very long photoperiod (L:D 20:4 h) combined with high temperature (23°C).  相似文献
