The survival of overwintering boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis (Boheman), adults on non-cotton hosts in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas was examined from 2001 to 2006. The success of the Boll Weevil Eradication Program, which was reintroduced into the LRGV in 2005, depends on controlling overwintering boll weevil populations. Laboratory studies were conducted using boll weevil adults that were captured in pheromone traps from September through March. The number of adults captured per trap declined significantly in the field from fall to the beginning of spring (3.5-7.0-fold). The proportion of trapped males and females did not differ significantly. The mean weight of boll weevil adults captured in September was 13.3 mg, while those of captured adults from November to February were significantly lower and ranged from 6.7 to 7.8 mg. Our results show that boll weevil adults can feed on different plant pollens. The highest longevity occurred when adults were fed almond pollen or mixed pollens (72.6 days and 69.2 days, respectively) and the lowest when they fed on citrus pollen or a non-food source (9.7 days or 7.4 days, respectively). The highest adult survival occurred on almond and mixed pollens [88.0%-97. 6% after 1st feeding period (10 days), 78.0%-90.8% after 3rd feeding period (10 days), 55. 0%-83.6% after 5th feeding period (10 days), and 15.2%-32.4% after lOth feeding period (10 days)]. The lowest adult survival occurred on citrus pollen [52.0%-56.0% after 1st feeding period (10 days), 13.3% after 3rd and 5th feeding periods (10 days), and 0 after 6th feeding period (10 days)]. Pollen feeding is not a behavior restricted to adult boll weevils of a specific sex or physiological state. Understanding how boll weevil adults survive in the absence of cotton is important to ensure ultimate success of eradicating this pest in the subtropics.  相似文献

We show that induced synomones, emitted as a consequence of Murgantia histrionica activity on Brassica oleracea, are adsorbed by the epicuticular waxes of leaves and perceived by the egg parasitoid Trissolcus brochymenae. Leaves were exposed to M. histrionica females placed on the abaxial leaf surface. After 24 h, the leaves were treated mechanically using gum arabic, or chemically using chloroform, on the adaxial surface, and finally the adaxial surface was assayed with T. brochymenae by two-choice tests in a closed arena. Wasp females responded to mechanically dewaxed cabbage leaf portions with feeding punctures and footprints (Ff) and with feeding punctures, oviposition and footprints (FOr), showing no effect of wax removal. In contrast, the removal of the epicuticular waxes from leaf portions close to FOf, and from leaves with oviposition and footprints (Of), determined the lack of responses by T. brochymenae. Solvent extracts of different treatments were bioassayed, but only FOr triggered parasitoid response. Thus the detection of oviposition-induced synomones by the parasitoid depends on their adsorption by the epicuticular waxes. Mechanical wax removal from leaf portions contaminated with host footprints (f) also determined a lack of wasp responses, suggesting that the footprints might trigger the induction of a "footprint-induced synomone" adsorbed onto the epicuticular waxes and exploited by the parasitoid. Leaf portions with the abaxial lamina previously dewaxed and then contaminated by footprints (D+f) of M. histrionica did not affect the parasitoid response, indicating that the abaxial epicuticular waxes are not directly involved in the chemicals induced by M. histrionica footprints.  相似文献

The cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringiBaly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a serious pest of crucifers in China, undergoing an imaginal summer and winter diapause in the soil. The effects of host plants on diapause incidence were tested in the beetle. The ratio of adults entering diapause was significantly low when they fed on the mature leaves of Chinese cabbage Shanghaiqin (Brassica chinesis var communis) than those feeding on Chinese cabbage Suzhouqin (Brassica chinesis var communis), radish (Raphanus sativus var longipinnatus) and stem mustard (Brassicajuncea vat tumida) at 25℃ combined with 13:11 (L: D) h. Fewer adults entered diapause on young leaves compared to physiologically aged and mature radish leaves at 25℃ combined with 13:11 (L: D) h. The effect of host plant species on diapause induction was also evident under continuously dark rearing conditions or at different photoperiods. These experimental results demonstrate that host plant mediation of diapause induction exists in the cabbage beetle. However, at temperatures ≤20℃ or photoperiods of 16:8 (L: D) h combined with 25℃, all individuals entered diapause regardless of the host plants, indicating that the effects of host plants on diapause induction could be expressed only within a limited range of temperatures and photoperiods.  相似文献

Individuals may reduce competition by temporally partitioning their use of a shared resource. Behavioral differences between sexes in ungulates may encourage segregation as individuals attempt to avoid antagonistic interactions. However, dominant sex and age groups may reduce subordinates' access to food resources, regardless of the subordinate's sex. We hypothesized that white-tailed deer Odocoileus Virginian us temporally segregated at supplemental feedi ng sites based on social rank (subordinate: yearling males and adult females;dominant: adult males) and that segregation was affected by phase of the breeding season and diel cycle. If deer temporally segregate according to social rank, we predicted that the resulting activity patterns would manifest in one social class being relatively more susceptible to hunter-induced mortality. We used a multistate modeling approach to quantify temporal segregation and calculated the probability that a feeding site was in a particular state during diurnal and nocturnal hours for each of the 3 phases of the breeding season. We determined that transition probabilities differed by season and diel cycle and dominant and subordinate social classes clearly avoided each other, with <1% co-occurrenee at feedi ng sites. During the pre-breedi ng seas on, the probability of a subordi nate being present during diurnal hours was 3.Ox more likely than a dominant being present, but did not differ during nocturnal hours. There was no difference for dominants and subordinates during diurnal or no cturnal hours during the breedi ng season .In the post-breedi ng season, subordi nates were 1.7x more likely to occur at the feeding site than a dominant during diurnal hours but they did not differ during nocturnal hours. Our results indicate that dominance status influences temporal segregation at feeding sites and is affected by the phase of the breeding season. Therefore, the resulti ng activity patterns may in crease subordi nates' risk to human predation during the prebreedi ng and post-breeding seasons.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the bionomics and demography of Pediculaster fletchmanni Wicht (Acari: Siteroptidae) under controlled conditions (20 ± l, 22 ± 1 and 25 ± 1℃, 70% ± 5% relative humidity and a photoperiod of 16L : 8D hours). Glass Petri dishes inoculated with Trichoderma sp. mycelia were used as substrate and food source. The mean developmental time of the egg and the active larva did not differ significantly at the various constant temperatures, but these periods were significantly different for the quiescent larval stage. The preoviposition period ranged from 2.3 to 2.8 days, the ovipositional period increased with temperature increase, and all females died immediately after oviposition. The development of active larvae was the fastest of all life stages. The developmental threshold ranged between 5.25-14.22℃ the highest value being observed for the quiescent larval development. For immature development required 89.29 degree-days. Values of rm (intrinsic rate of increase) were 0.229, 0.398 and 0.386 for 20, 22 and 25℃ respectively. Finite rates of increase (λ) increased along with increasing temperature from 20-25℃ consequently the population doubling time (D) and mean generation time (T) showed significant differences with increasing temperature.  相似文献

We assessed the adaptiveness of refraining from infanticidal probing at the third attack under triple parasitism in the parasitoid Echthrodelphaxfairchildii Perkins, by comparing fitness returns from the third attack with and without probing. Fitness returns were assessed in terms of the survival rate, mean developmental time, and mean adult head width of the progenies. Not probing was maladaptive under triple parasitism with oviposition intervals of 1/24 and 24/24 hours (where the numbers before and after the slash refer to the first-to-second and second-to-third oviposition intervals, respectively), although no significant difference was detected in fitness returns for oviposition intervals of 24/1 hours. We suggest that the cost of probing (especially the decrease in the chance of future ovipositions) is a reason for the seemingly maladaptive absence of probing.  相似文献

Diurnal variation in phloem sap composition has a strong infuence on aphid performance. The sugar-rich phloem sap serves as the sole diet for aphids and a suite of physiological mechanisms and behaviors allowv them to tolerate the high osmotic stress. Here,we tested the hypothesis that night-time feeding by aphids is a behavior that takes advantage of the low sugar diet in the night to compensate for osmotic stress incurred while feeding on high sugar diet during the day.Using the electrical penetration graph(EPG)technique.we examined the eiects of diurmal rhythm on feeding behaviors of bird cherry-oat aphid(Rhopalosiphurm padi L.)on wheat.A strong diurmal rhythm in aphids as indicated by the presence of a cyclical pattern of expression in a core clock gene did not impact aphid feeding and similar feeding behaviors were observed during day and night. The major difference observed between day and night feeding was that aphids spent significantly longer time in phloem salivation during the night compared to the day.In contrast, aphid hydration was reduced at the end of the day-time feeding compared to end of the night-time fepding.Gene expression analysis of R.padi osmoregulatory genes indicated that sugar break down and water transport into the aphid gut was reduced at night. These data suggest that while diumal variation occurs in phloem sap composition, aphids use night time feeding to overcome the high osmotic stress incurred while feeding on sugar-rich phloem sap during the day.  相似文献

Adult size, longevity, egg load dynamics and oviposition ofMicroplitis rufiventris Kok. which began their development in the first, second, third (preferred hosts) or fourth (non-preferred hosts) instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) were studied. The parasitoid size was largely determined by the initial host size at parasitism. Non-ovipositing females derived from older hosts lived for longer periods than those derived from younger ones. However, the ovipositing females, irrespective of their size, lived for almost the same periods. At emergence, the oviducts of adult females contain a significant amount of mature eggs available for oviposition for a few hours on eclosion day. Egg load increases during the early phase of adult life. The amount of additional mature eggs and rate of egg maturation per hour was greater for wasps derived from preferred hosts compared with those in females derived from non-preferred hosts. The pattern of egg production in M. rufiventris females depended on the availability of hosts for parasitization. Host-deprived females depleted the egg complement with aging; the longer the host deprivation, the lower the oviduct egg load. Marked reduction in both realized or potential fecundity of host-deprived females was observed following host availability. Host privation for more than 3 days induced a marked deficit fecundity pattern through the female' s life. The realized fecundity was determined by the interaction among host availability, the number of eggs that are matured over the female' s life span, oviposition rate and host size from which the female was derived. These results suggest that: (i) M. rufiventris wasp is a weak synovigenic species; (ii) the maturation of additional eggs is inhibited once the maximum oviduct egg load is reached; (iii) the egg load of the newly emerged female is significantly less than the realized fecundity; and (iv) because M. rufiventris females oviposit fewer eggs when they begin depleting their egg supply at 3 days, augmentative releases will require release immediately following emergence to ensure the highest parasitization rate in the field.  相似文献

<正> Zonal distribution and population biology of Ilyoplax frater were studied in a mangrove mudflat area of Pakistan. The crabs were collected from Korangi creek through transect and quadrat method from low tide level to high tide level. Twotransects were delimited in a mangrove area of Korangi creek (24°79'N/ 67°20'E). On each transect, three 0.25 m quadrats weresampled at three tidal levels on a monthly basis during low tide periods from March 2001 to February 2002. A total of 1124 crabswere obtained, of which 482 were males and 642 were females. Density of crabs varied between 0 and 90 /m". The density andsize distribution varied and showed significant differences from low to high tide level, and were positively correlated with thepercent moisture, percent organic matter and sediment grain size. The carapace width (CW) ranged from 2.5 to 11.5 mm for maleand 2.5 to 11.0 mm for female and was not significantly different. The overall sex ratio did not differ significantly from the expected1:1 throughout the year in small crabs but was significantly different in adult crabs (x~2= 49.73) with more male crabs. Sizefrequency distribution showed recruitment of juvenile crabs ( 4 mm) nearly throughout the year except during June and July.Presence of ovigerous females in all months with seasonal peaks in September, October, December and May indicates seasonalcontinuous breeding. Weight of egg mass increases with weight of ovigerous females and show positive linear relationship. Theestimated mean diameter of egg was 2.83±0.25μm, and the average number of eggs was 3065±902  相似文献

The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a major pest in glasshouses, where light and photoperiod are often manipulated to grow crops. The effect of five photoperiods (L0:D24, L6:D18, L12:D12, L18:D6, and L24:D0) on the behaviour of adult females was investigated in the laboratory at 25 °C. The amount of walking, pollen consumption, and oviposition all increased with increasing photophase. The three behaviours occurred at a low rate in continuous darkness, and are therefore not exclusively diurnal. Three out of 16 thrips (19%) showed weakly rhythmic walking activity in continuous darkness, with an average circadian period of 25.3 ± 1.5 h. It is proposed that the length of the photophase determines the amount of nutrient intake, which in turn determines oviposition rate and thus affects population increase.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Circadian rhythms are demonstrated in initiation and duration of copulation, and in 'rocking' by females during mating in the large milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus. In constant light or darkness there were no more than two or three recognizable cycles of any of these rhythms. In addition, light directly stimulated copulatory attempts, but did not influence their chance of success. Copulations were generally shorter during the early-mid photophase and longer during the late photophase in LD 16:8, while initiations of copulation were fewest during the scotophase. The males were mainly responsible for these rhythms. It is suggested that the diurnal rhythm in copulation duration probably evolved as a consequence of the rhythms of flight activity and/or oviposition. Sperm from the late photophase matings typically displaced 90–100% of sperm from prior matings, while sperm from the shorter early photophase matings typically displaced less prior sperm. Peak rocking activity during mating occurred from 6 to 8 h after lights-on in LD 16:8. Little rocking occurred during the late photophase, when the greatest percent of pairs are in copula. Feeding and drinking inhibited rocking activity, but the feeding rhythm did not drive the rocking rhythm. Rocking appears not to function in promoting termination of mating, positioning of the aedeagus, nor to mediate mechanical stimulation of egg production. Its function remains unknown.  相似文献

At photoperiods longer than 8h per 24h, adults of the day-active onion fly Delia antiqua showed a major peak of locomotor activity in the late photophase and also bursts of activity induced by lights-on or lights-off. At shorter photoperiods the activity peaks fused. After transfer from long photoperiods to constant darkness (DD), the rhythm free-ran, but only the major peak persisted. This suggests that only the major peak is controlled by the circadian pacemaker. At long photoperiods, the daily phase of the major peak occurred progressively later with age. As a result, the activity at short photoperiods often shifted from photophase to scotophase in old flies. The free-running period (tau) also changed with age; tau was shorter than 24h until 14-20 days after eclosion and thereafter became longer, but a few individuals repeated changes in tau. The phase delay of locomotor activity with age in D. antiqua would be attributable to the increase in tau.  相似文献

Reproductive boll weevil populations are typically identified by the presence of a frass seal and protuberance at the oviposition site in cotton squares. However, despite the occurrence of other oviposition puncture seal types and their use in previous fecundity studies, the relationship of these respective puncture seal types and oviposition has not been clearly examined. In this study, newly eclosed females (相似文献

The aim of these experiments was to test the effect of a cyclic administration of melatonin, by mimicking the daily rhythm of hormone levels, on the circadian organization of two distinct functions in quail: oviposition and feeding activity. Laying and feeding rhythms under photoperiodic conditions and constant darkness (DD) were investigated. Under DD, where the two rhythms were free running, a daily rhythm of melatonin was administered. In LD 14h:10h, two different individual profiles of laying were established, with stable females laying at the same time each day and delayed females laying progressively later each day. For feeding activity, all birds were clearly synchronized to the photoperiodic cycle. In DD, the laying birds showed a free-running rhythm of oviposition with a period longer than 24 h for both profiles but the delayed profile females had a longer period than stable profile females. In comparison, the free-running period of feeding rhythm of the same birds was shorter than 24 h. A cyclic administration of melatonin had no effect on laying rhythm, which continued to free-run in DD, whereas feeding activity was synchronized as soon as the first cycle of melatonin was administered. From these results, it seems that two different circadian systems drive each of the two types of behavior separately. Melatonin could be the main synchronizer for the temporal control of feeding behavior, but it does not play a part in the control of oviposition in Japanese quail.  相似文献

The glowworms of New Zealand and Australia are bioluminescent fly larvae that generate light to attract prey into their webs. Some species inhabit the constant darkness of caves as well as the dim, natural photophase of rain-forests. Given the diversity of light regimens experienced by glowworms in their natural environment, true circadian rhythmicity of light output could be present. Consequently the light emission characteristics of the Australian subtropical species Arachnocampa flava, both in their natural rainforest habitat and in artificial conditions in the laboratory, were established. Larvae were taken from rainforest and kept alive in individual containers. When placed in constant darkness (DD) in the laboratory they maintained free-running, cyclical light output for at least 28 days, indicating that light output is regulated by an endogenous rhythm. The characteristics of the light emission changed in DD: individuals showed an increase in the time spent glowing per day and a reduction in the maximum light output. Most individuals show a free-running period greater than 24 h. Manipulation of the photophase and exposure to skeleton photoperiods showed that light acts as both a masking and an entraining agent and suggests that the underlying circadian rhythm is sinusoidal in the absence of light-based masking. Manipulation of thermoperiod in DD showed that temperature cycles are an alternative entraining agent. Exposure to a period of daily feeding in DD failed to entrain the rhythm in the laboratory. The endogenous regulation of luminescence poses questions about periodicity and synchronization of bioluminescence in cave glowworms.  相似文献

Abstract  The reproductive potential of overwintering boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis (Boheman), females collected from pheromone traps in September, November and January, fed for 1, 3, and 5 weeks on plant pollens, and then provided cotton squares, was determined in the laboratory at 27 ± 1°C, 65% RH, and a photoperiod 13 : 11 (L : D) h. Duration of pollen feeding by overwintering boll weevils did not significantly influence egg and feeding punctures, or puncture ratios (egg to total punctures) for any of the three months of parent weevil collections when provided cotton squares on a daily basis. However, punctures and puncture ratios are significantly different when comparing mean data between months of boll weevil collections. When boll weevils were provided with cotton squares daily, the pre-ovipositional periods of female parents captured in September, November and January were 5, 9 and 14 days, respectively. The rate of eggs by females was significantly lower during November and January than September. Female parents collected in September produced a significantly higher percentage of eggs yielding adult progeny than those collected in November and January. Life table parameters indicated that net reproductive rate ( R o) of boll weevil females collected in September was 1.2-fold higher than those collected in November and 10.7-fold higher than those collected in January. Except for testes size, no differences in male reproductive parameters were observed during the cotton-free period compared with males captured during mid-cotton (June). The number of oocytes in the ovarioles and the number of oocytes containing yolk were significantly lower during September, November and January compared with June. The reproductive potential of overwintering boll weevil females collected in different months is an important consideration in determining the success of any control strategy.  相似文献

Abstract.  The present study tested whether the pattern of feeding activity in the firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus (L.) is sex- and wing morph-related, diurnal or nocturnal, as well as whether the feeding rhythm persists in constant darkness. Temporal patterns of feeding activity are analysed in macropterous and brachypterous adults reared under long-day (LD 18 : 6 h) and short-day (LD 12 : 12 h) photoperiods, and in adults transferred to constant darkness. In females, the total feeding activity is highest in long-day reproductively active brachypters, intermediate in short-day diapausing brachypters, and lowest in macropters; the differences among males are substantially smaller. Although the total feeding activity of macropterous males is higher than in macropterous females, no sex-related differences are found in feeding activity of diapausing and reproductively active brachypters. The frequency of feeding exhibits sex-related differences, with obviously higher values in males. Mean feeding periods of macropterous and reproductively active brachypterous males are shorter than in females of the same wing morph. Mean interfeeding periods are longest in macropters, intermediate in diapausing brachypters, and shortest in reproductively active brachypters, and always lower in males than in females. The study shows that the feeding activity of P. apterus adults is age-, sex- and wing morph-related, and exhibits a diurnal pattern, except in reproductively active brachypterous females. The latter do not express a clear diurnal rhythm of feeding, presumably because of interactions with cycles of egg development and oviposition. The persistence of diurnal rhythm of feeding activity in short-day brachypterous females transferred to constant darkness indicates an endogeneity of this rhythm in P. apterus .  相似文献

The effects of varying photophase and altitude of origin on the phase angle difference (Ψ) of the circadian rhythm of oviposition during entrainment to light‐dark (LD) cycles and the aftereffects of such photophases on the period of the free‐running rhythm (τ) in constant darkness (DD) were evaluated in two Himalayan strains of Drosophila ananassae, the high‐altitude (HA) strain from Badrinath (5,123 m above sea level=ASL) and the low‐altitude (LA) strain from Firozpur (179 m ASL). The Ψ (i.e., the hours from lights‐on of the LD cycle to oviposition median) of both strains was determined in LD cycles in which the photophase at 100 lux varied from 6 to 18 h/24 h. The HA strain was entrained by all LD cycles except the one with 6 h photophase in which it was weakly rhythmic, but the LA strain was entrained by only three LD cycles with photophases of 10, 12, and 14 h, but photophases of 6, 8, 16, and 18 h rendered it arrhythmic. Lights‐off transition of LD cycles was the phase‐determining signal for both strains as oviposition medians of the HA strain occurred~6 h prior to lights‐off, while those of the LA strain occurred~1 h after lights‐off. The Ψ of the HA strain increased from~2 h in 8 h photophase to~11 h in 18 h photophase, while that of the LA strain increased from~11 h in 10 h photophase to~15 h in 14 h photophase. The aftereffects of photophase of the prior entraining LD cycles on τ in DD were determined by transferring flies from LD cycles to DD. The τ of the HA strain increased from~19 to~25 h when transferred to DD from LD 8:16 and LD 18:6 cycles, respectively, whereas the τ of the LA strain increased from~26 to~28 h when transferred to DD from LD 10:14 and LD 14:10 cycles, respectively. Thus, these results demonstrate that the photophases of entraining LD cycles and the altitude of origin affected several parameters of entrainment and the period of the free‐running rhythm of these strains.  相似文献

Abstract The cabbage seed weevil ( Ceutorhynchus assimilis Payk.) lays eggs singly into pods of oilseed rape ( Brassica napus L.) through punctures bored with the mouthparts, preferring pods not recently used for oviposition. A simple new choice test has been used to test individual components of egg-laying behaviour for their effect on oviposition site selection. It is confirmed that an oviposition-deterring pheromone (ODP) is deposited during abdomen brushing of the pod which follows egg-laying. Neither pin punctures, weevil feeding punctures, oviposition punctures nor eggs had any deterrent effect. Pods walked on by female weevils were not avoided by those laying eggs. Observations suggest that the ODP is sensed by contact chemoreceptors on the antennae. The deterrent effect lasted only 1–2 h. The implications of these findings on the adaptive significance of the pheromone and its possible use in pest control are discussed.  相似文献
