Anatomical study of the genusDendroseris (Compositae: Cichorieae), endemic to the Juan Fernandez Islands, was undertaken to determine if segregate genera were valid. Other questions include the significance of pith bundles and of receptacular bristles, and whether the ancestors of these peculiar rosette trees and shrubs were woody or herbaceous. Anatomical evidence, when added to that from gross morphology, suggests that the segregation as distinct genera ofRea, Phoenicoseris, andHesperoseris is probably not justified, and that they are better treated as subgenera ofDendroseris. Differences in pollen morphology, floral trichomes, achene and leaf anatomy provide good species characteristics. These all appear, respectively, as variations on a basic plan, andDendroseris can be envisaged as derived from a common stock in the Juan Fernandez Islands. The genus is not particularly primitive within the family or tribe. The presence of additional bundles in the flowers ofD. litoralis may be interpreted as related to gigantism. The separate corolla lobes inD. gigantea probably do not represent a vestige of an actinomorphic condition. Pith bundles inDendroseris may have been present in ancestors; in any case, they seem likely to have increased in prominence with increase in stem diameter. Available evidence seems to favor the interpretation of growth forms inDendroseris as derived from an herbaceous ancestry.  相似文献

Rhynchospora is one of the most species-rich genera of Cyperaceae and one of the few with entomophilous species. Considering the few anatomical studies of the genus, especially of the reproductive structures, this study comparatively analysed the anatomy of flowers of two representative species of Rhynchospora, R. consanguinea and R. pubera, including the floral vasculature and the anatomy of the style base, which is persistent with the fruit. Both species have congested inflorescences with light-coloured bracts and bisexual flowers, and phenolic idioblasts in the anthers and gynoecium, characteristics that suggest insect pollination. In R. consanguinea, the bisexual and the most proximal male flower has perianths, a new character state reported for the genus. The floral vasculature pattern is similar in both species, but differs from that previously described for Rhynchospora. In both species, there are two vascular bundles in the rachilla, which split into three receptacular bundles, the latter forming a vascular plexus where the bundles of stamens, gynoecium and ovule are connected. No lateral carpellary trace was observed, and the presence of the abaxial receptacular bundle was interpreted as a vestige of the tricarpellate ancestral condition. In the fruit of both species, the thickened style base (stylopodium) has a parenchyma with idioblasts containing phenolic compounds and idioblasts with helical or reticulate cell wall thickenings. The stylopodium is a homologous structure in the species of Rhynchospora and to other genera of Cyperoideae and evolved several times in the subfamily.  相似文献

A combined taxonomic revision and wood anatomical study ofDicorynia, a South American genus of legumes that is unusual in both its floral and wood anatomy, is presented. Two possible evolutionary pathways leading to the unique 8-to 10-thecate anthers are discussed, and it is concluded that apical proliferation of the thecal primordia is the more likely. Gross and microscopic features of this silica-accumulating wood are given in detail and contrasted with other legume woods especially those containing silica. Economic uses of the trees, especially the wood ofD. guianensis, are discussed particularly in regard to marine construction. It is suggested that the high resistance of this wood to marine borers lies not so much in its silica content as to the presence of some other chemical. Based on the similarity of floral and fruit structures, the number of species is reduced from 7 to 2:D. guianensis in the Guianas andD. paraensis in the Amazonian region. Vegetative variations in the Amazonian population, previously given species rank, are reduced to 5 new varieties ofD. paraensis.  相似文献

Seventy-three species from 17 genera of Cyperaceae were studied with the aim of identifying and confirming those species with Kranz anatomy. Among the species studied, 36 exhibited Kranz anatomy; 37 did not. Of the four types of Kranz anatomy recognized in Cyperaceae, three were encountered: the chlorocyperoid type in the genera Cyperus, Kyllinga, Lipocarpha, Pycreus, and Remirea; the fimbristyloid type in Abildgaardia, Bulbostylis, and Fimbristylis; and the rhynchosporoid type in Rhynchospora. Non-Kranz anatomy was confirmed in species of the following genera: Becquerelia, Calyptrocarya, Cyperus, Diplacrum, Eleocharis, Fuirena, Hypolytrum, Pleurostachys, Rhynchospora, and Scleria. The anatomical data obtained corroborate earlier studies of species of Cyperaceae as to the presence of Kranz anatomy and the anatomical types in several species and the “Kranzkette” pattern in Cyperus ligularis and Cyperus pohlli.  相似文献

Abscisic acid plays a crucial role in the regulation of fruit development and ripening, however, its role in the floral development and the fruit set is still unclear. In the present study, the ABA accumulation and the expression patterns of genes related to ABA metabolism and signalling in sweet cherry were investigated. The results showed that ABA accumulation increased and peaked at stage V in ovary, at stage VI in stamen, and in young fruit it peaked at 7 days after full bloom. The expression pattern of ABA synthetase PaNCED1 was consistent with the changes of ABA accumulation. Among four ABA degradation enzymes PaCYP707As, PaCYP707A4 was highly expressed in ovary, PaCYP707A1 was mainly in stamen, and PaCYP707A2 was in young fruit, and their expressions were reversed to the trend of PaNCED1. With regard to ABA signalling genes, among three ABA receptors PaPYLs, PaPYL2 and PaPYL3 were high expression genes in ovary and in young fruit with similar expression patterns, while PaPYL3 was the high expression gene in stamen. Within six PaPP2Cs, PaPP2C1/2/3 were highly expressed in ovary and young fruit, while PaPP2C3/4 were mainly in stamen. The six PaSnRK2s showed different expression patterns: PaSnRK2.1/2.2/2.4 were highly expressed in ovary and young fruit, while PaSnRK2.1/2.3 were highly expressed in stamen. In situ hybridization results showed that PaPYL3, PaPP2C3 and PaSnRK2.4 were expressed in seed, pulp and fruit peel during fruit set. In conclusion, ABA and its signaling may play an important role in the regulation of floral development and fruit set.  相似文献

New or confirmatory chromosome counts for 16 taxa ofHypericum in Britain, one of northwest Africa, and 24 of North and Central America are reported. First records for any member of the genusVisma (n = 10) are also included. The counts are discussed with respect to those previously reported forHypericum and related genera. Some of this chromosomal information is incorporated in a diagram showing suggested evolutionary trends withinHypericum. There appears to be a descending series of basic numbers (x = 12, 10, 9, 8, 7), of which all but the last have been recorded in polyploid, as well as diploid, form. Observations of chromosome morphology suggest thatHypericum is cytologically relatively unspecialized. Studies of chromosome morphology, therefore, are not likely to yield much information about the evolutionary history of the genus. It is suggested that the basic number forAllanblackia andPentadesma is 7 or 14, whereas inCalophyllum andMesua it is probably 8 or 16. Known gametic chromosome numbers inMammea (n = 16, 18) andGarcinia (n = 24, ca. 27, ca. 29, ca. 38, ca. 40, and 48) do not indicate an obvious basic number for these genera, although x = 8, 9, and 16 might be involved. Ring-formation of theOenothera-type, possibly indicative of structural hybridity, is reported for the first time inHypericum mitchellianum Rydb., a close relative ofHypericum punctatum Lam., which was previously shown to possess this anomalous chromo some condition.  相似文献

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a model crop plant for the study of fruit ripening and disease resistance. Here we present a systemic study on in planta transformation of tomato with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA4404 harboring pCAMBIA1303 binary vector bearing HPTII as a plant selectable marker and mGFP/GUS fusion as the reporter gene. We attempted the transformation of tomato at different developmental stages viz. during seed germination, seedling growth, and floral bud development. The imbibition of seeds with Agrobacterium suspension led to seed mortality. The vacuum infiltration of seedlings with Agrobacterium suspension led to sterility in surviving plants. Successful transformation could be achieved either by dipping of developing floral buds in the Agrobacterium suspension or by injecting Agrobacterium into the floral buds. Most floral buds subjected to dip as well as to injection either aborted or had arrested development. The pollination of surviving floral buds with pollen from wild-type plants yielded fruits bearing seeds. A transformation efficiency of 0.25–0.50% was obtained on floral dips/floral injections. Transgenic plants were selected by screening seedlings for hygromycin resistance. The presence of the transgene in genomic DNA was confirmed by Southern blot analysis and expression of the reporter gene up to the T4 generation. The amenability of tomato for in planta transformation simplifies the generation of transgenic tomato plants obviating intervening tissue culture.  相似文献

The family Malpighiaceae, particularly in the Neotropic, shows a similar floral morphology. Although floral attraction and rewards to pollinators are alike, stigmas and styles show more diversity. The stigmas were described covered with a thin and impermeable cuticle that needs to be ruptured by the mechanical action of the pollinators. However, this characteristic was only mentioned for a few species and the anatomy and ultrastructure of the stigmas were not explored. In this work, we analyze the morphology, anatomy, and ultrastructure of the stigma and style of Callaeum psilophyllum. Moreover, we identify the potential pollinators in order to evaluate how the disposition of the stigmas is related with their size and its role in the exposure of the receptive stigmatic surface. Our observations indicate that Centris flavifrons, C. fuscata, C. tarsata, and C. trigonoides are probably efficient pollinators of C. psilophyllum. The three stigmas are covered by a cuticle that remained intact in bagged flowers. The flowers exposed to visitors show the cuticle broken, more secretion in the intercellular spaces between sub-stigmatic cells and abundant electron-dense components inside vacuoles in stigmatic papillae. This indicates that the stigmas prepares in similar ways to receive pollen grains, but the pollinator action is required to break the cuticle, and once pollen tubes start growing, stigmatic and sub-stigmatic cells release more secretion by a granulocrine process.  相似文献

The paper represents a reassessment of familial relationships within the Order Santalales. Rafflesiaceae, Hydnoraceae, and Balanophoraceae are excluded from the order, and their reproductive similarities with some Santalales regarded as evolutionary convergence. The exclusion of Grubbiaceae from Santalales sponsored by other workers is accepted, as is the reassignment to other families of the two only genera of Octoknemaceae. The remaining members of the order are placed into six families, viz. Olacaceae (possibly representing several smaller families); Santalaceae; Loranthaceae (sensu stricto); Viscaceae (sensu stricto); Myzodendraceae ; and Eremolepidaceae (containingEremolepis, Eubrachion, andAntidaphne). It is suggested thatLepidoceras, formerly placed near the above three genera, is more properly placed in Loranthaceae (sensu stricto) nearTupeia. The proposed scheme of affinities of the families of Santalales, as reconstituted, is based to a large extent on inflorescence structure, but is supported by floral morphology and other features. The thesis is defended that Loranthaceae (sensu stricto), Santalaceae, Myzodendraceae, and Eremolepidaceae represent four inde pendent lines of development from portions of the Olacacean complex. Viscaceae (sensu stricto) may be derived directly from Santalaceae.  相似文献

The Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is one of the most destructive sucking pests of flowering plants. We examined behavioral responses of F. occidentalis adults to the floral volatiles of Rosa chinensis, Gardenia jasminoides, and Tagetes erecta in a Y-tube olfactometer with background visual cues (green, red, white, yellow, and blue backgrounds). The results show that F. occidentalis adults had similar responses under all the different background colors, but the responses by sex varied significantly when offered floral volatile or clean air. In pairings of floral volatiles, female F. occidentalis adults presented significant preferences (R. chinensis > G. jasminoides > T. erecta) in each treatment, while male F. occidentalis adults had no significant preference. Furthermore, the responses of female F. occidentalis adults to the three different floral volatiles compared with each other were greater under green and blue backgrounds than red, white, or yellow backgrounds. However, the responses of male F. occidentalis adults to floral volatiles were similar to all five backgrounds. These results indicate that female thrips could discriminate different floral volatiles, while male thrips could not. Both male and female thrips performed steady preferences of floral volatiles under all the five visual backgrounds, and the behavioral responses of female thrips to the floral volatiles could be enhanced under the green and blue backgrounds. These findings could hopefully aid in the development of effective trapping and monitoring strategies for this pest.  相似文献

Background

Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2)-catalyzed H3K27me3 marks are tightly associated with the WUS-AG negative feedback loop to terminate floral stem cell fate to promote carpel development, but the roles of Polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) in this event remain largely uncharacterized.

Results

Here we show conspicuous variability in the morphology and number of carpels among individual flowers in the absence of the PRC1 core components AtRING1a and AtRING1b, which contrasts with the wild-type floral meristem consumed by uniform carpel production in Arabidopsis thaliana. Promoter-driven GUS reporter analysis showed that AtRING1a and AtRING1b display a largely similar expression pattern, except in the case of the exclusively maternal-preferred expression of AtRING1b, but not AtRING1a, in the endosperm. Indeterminate carpel development in the atring1a;atring1b double mutant is due to replum/ovule-to-carpel conversion in association with ectopic expression of class I KNOX (KNOX-I) genes. Moreover, AtRING1a and AtRING1b also play a critical role in ovule development, mainly through promoting the degeneration of non-functional megaspores and proper integument formation. Genetic interaction analysis indicates that the AtRING1a/b-regulated KNOX-I pathway acts largely in a complementary manner with the WUS-AG pathway in controlling floral stem cell maintenance and proper carpel development.

Conclusions

Our study uncovers a novel mechanistic pathway through which AtRING1a and AtRING1b repress KNOX-I expression to terminate floral stem cell activities and establish carpel cell fate identities.

A revision of Bursera in the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas has confirmed that Commiphora does not occur in the region and that all but one species in the region belong to Bursera subgen. Bursera. Here we describe a new species, Bursera yaterensis; B. nashii is synonymized with B. glauca and B. ovata is synonymized with B. trinitensis; and we return five species from Commiphora to Bursera. A dichotomous key is provided using mostly vegetative characters due to the frequent lack of adequate reproductive material and the relative uniformity of most floral and fruit characters.  相似文献
