The number, size (mm3 pellet –1) and total volume of fecalpellets produced (mm3 h–1) by Boeckella titicacae increasedwith concentration of Chlorella and natural seston in threedifferent lakewaters from Bahia de Puno and Lago Grande of LakeTiticaca and nearby Laguna Arapa. The three lakewaters differedin the size and number of fecal pellets produced at seston concentrations>0.5 mg dry wt l–1. However, the total volume of fecalpellets egested varied little. Large-sized food (>10 µg)resulted in larger pellets but smaller total fecal production.Food concentration had parallel effects on the production offeces and on feeding rates. Both fecal production and feedingincreased linearly with food concentration with saturation between5 and 7.5 x 105 Chlorella ml–1 (3.7–5.6 mg dry wtl–1). Varied responses in fecal production when fed differentsize fractions of lake seston suggest Boeckella has a complexand flexible feeding behavior. Feeding preferences of B.titicacaeand B.occidentalis (Ivlev index) for two seston size fractionsare generally reflected by fecal production.  相似文献

The calanoid copepod, Eudiaplomus graciloides, was reared fromegg to adult on uni-algal diets (0.1. 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt1–1) using the green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,as food, or on a mixed diet consisting of Lake Esrom water filteredthrough a plankton net with pore size 45 µm and supplementedwith C. reinhardtii (2.5 mg dry wt 1–1). On the mixeddiet at 21.0°C growth in body dry wt (W, µg dry wt)was exponential, and the growth constants were 0.21 day–1in the early to mid juvenile stage (N1 - C4) and 0.11 day–1in the late juvenile to early adult stage (C4-A). At 14.5°Cthe corresponding growth rate constants were 0.10 and 0.08 day–1.Similar growth rates were found at uni-algal concentrationsof 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt I–1, and it was argued that thethreshold concentration for growth in Eudiaptomus was closeto 0.1 mg dry wt I–1. The clearance (C, ml h–1)of copepodites was measured on the uni-algal diets. The constantsof the regression (C = aWb) were: a = 0.125, b = 0.858 (2000C. reinhardtii ml–1), a = 0.068, b = 0.849 (10 000), a= 0.028, b = 0.875 (50 000). Ingestion rates were calculatedfrom the clearances and the average algal concentrations. Atthe three food levels the average daily rations were 30, 67and 125% of body dry wt. The respiration rate (R, nl O2 h–1)was measured in individuals reared on the mixed diet. The constantsof the regression (R = aWb) were: a = 4.82, b = 1.07 (nauplii,14.5°C), a = 4.17, b = 0.904 (copepodites and adults, 14.5°C),a = 6.87, b = 0.757 (copepodites and adults, 21.0°C). Nosignificant difference in the respiration rate of copepoditesreared on uni-algal diets and the mixed diet could be demonstrated.Energy budgets were calculated. The assimilation efficiencyand the gross growth efficiency of copepodites decreased markedlywith increasing food concentration, the net growth efficiencyvaried from an average of 0.44 at the lowest algal concentrationto 0.60 on the mixed diet. The results are discussed in relationto previous findings with both freshwater and marine copepods.  相似文献

Ephyra larvae and small medusae (1.7–95 mm diameter, 0.01–350mg ash-free dry wt, AFDW) of the scyphozoan jellyfish Aureliaaurita were used in predation experiments with phytoplankton(the flagellate Isochrysis galbana, 4 µm diameter, {smalltilde}6 x 10–6 µg AFDW cell–1), ciliates (theoligotrich Strombidium sulcatum, 28 µm diameter, {smalltilde}2 x 10–3 µg AFDW), rotifers (Synchaeta sp.,0.5 µg AFDW individual–1) and mixed zooplankton(mainly copepods and cladocerans, 2.1–3.1 µg AFDWindividual–1). Phytoplankton in natural concentrations(50–200 µg C I–1) were not utilized by largemedusae (44–95 mm diameter). Ciliates in concentrationsfrom 0.5 to 50 individuals ml"1 were consumed by ephyra larvaeand small medusae (3–14 mm diameter) at a maximum predationrate of 171 prey day–1, corresponding to a daily rationof 0.42%. The rotifer Synchaeta sp., offered in concentrationsof 100–600 prey I–1, resulted in daily rations ofephyra larvae (2–5 mm diameter) between 1 and 13%. Mixedzooplankton allowed the highest daily rations, usually in therange 5–40%. Large medusae (>45 mm diameter) consumedbetween 2000 and 3500 prey organisms day"1 in prey concentrationsexceeding 100 I–1. Predation rate and daily ration werepositively correlated with prey abundance. Seen over a broadsize spectrum, the daily ration decreased with increased medusasize. The daily rations observed in high abundance of mixedzooplankton suggest a potential ‘scope for growth’that exceeds the growth rate observed in field populations, and this, in turn, suggests that the natural populations areusually food limited. The predicted predation rate at averageprey concentrations that are characteristic of neritic environmentscannot explain the maximum growth rates observed in field populations. It is therefore suggested that exploitation of patches of preyin high abundance is an important component in the trophodynamicsof this species. 1Present address: University of Bergen, Department of MarineBiology, N-5065 Blomsterdalen, Norway  相似文献

Feeding of nauplius stages of Eudiaptomus gracilis on mixed plastic beads   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Eudiaptomus gracilis makes up 30–40 and 80–90% ofthe zooplankton in Lake Balaton during the summer and the winterrespectively. More than half of the species population consistsof nauplii We studied feeding and size selectivity of naupliiin suspensions which contained polystyrol latex beads in a concentrationdose to the natural seston. Guts of NI nauplii were free ofboth beads and remnants of natural food Of NII–NVI nauplii,67–87% took in beads. Older animals consumed more andlarger particles. The maximum diameter of ingested beads reached29 µm On an average, NII nauplii took in 128 µm3of beads in 10 min, whereas older animals consumed 615–900µm3. The clearance rate remained below 0 01 µl h–1NII nauplii strongly preferred 1 2 µm particles Oldernauplii did not show any preference or selected only slightlyfor the smallest particles. Nauplii rejected 4–11 µmbeads. In some cases a weak positive selection could be observedtoward 12 µm or larger beads.  相似文献

The seasonal development of bacteria was studied in the hypertrophiccoastal lagoon Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (Caribbeancoast of Colombia). This large but only 1.5 m deep lagoon issubject to strong seasonal variations of salinity from almostfully marine (April/May) to brackish conditions in October/November.Chlorophyll ranged from 6 to 182 µg L–1, and grossprimary production amounted to 1690 g C m–2 per year.Total bacterial number (TBN) ranged from 6.5 to 90.5 x 109 cellsL–1 and bacterial biomass (BBM) from 77 to 1542 µgC L–1, which are among the highest ever reported for naturalcoastal waters. Neither TBN nor BBM varied significantly withsalinity, phytoplankton or seston concentrations. Only the bacterialmean cell volume showed a significant relation to salinity, being highest (0.066 µm3) during the period of increasingand lowest (0.032 µm3) during decreasing salinity. Bacterialprotein accounted for 24% (19–26%) and phytoplankton proteinfor 57% (53–71%) of total seston protein. The ratio (annualmean) of bacterial carbon to phytoplankton carbon was 0.44 (range0.04–1.43). At low phytoplankton abundance [chlorophylla (Chl a) < 25 µg L–1], bacterial carbon wasalmost equal to phytoplankton biomass (i.e. the mean ratio was1.04). In contrast, at Chl a > 100 µg L–1, BBMwas low compared to phytoplankton biomass (the mean ratio was0.16). In general, BBM varied less than phytoplankton biomass. Most probably, the missing correlation between bacterial andphytoplankton variables was due to (i) organic material partlyderived from allochthonous sources serving as food resourcefor bacteria and (ii) a strong resuspension of bacteria fromthe sediment caused by frequent wind-induced mixing of the veryshallow lagoon.  相似文献

The relationships between photosynthesis and photosyntheticphoton flux densities (PPFD, P-l) were studied during a red-tideof Dinophysis norvegica (July-August 1990) in Bedford Basin.Dinophysis norvegica, together with other dinoflagellates suchas Gonyaulax digitate, Ceratium tripos, contributed {small tilde}50%of the phytoplankton biomass that attained a maximum of 16.7µg Chla 1 and 11.93 106 total cells I–1.The atomic ratios of carbon to nitrogen for D.norvegica rangedfrom 8.7 to 10.0. The photosynthetic characteristics of fractionatedphytoplankton (>30 µm) dominated by D.norvegica weresimilar to natural bloom assemblages: o (the initial slope ofthe P-l curves) ranged between 0.013 and 0.047 µg C [µgChla]–1 h–1 [µmol m s–1]–1the maximum photosynthetic rate, pBm, between 0.66 and 1.85µg C [µghla]–1 h–1; lk (the photoadaptationindex) from 14 to 69 µ,mol m–2 s–1. Carbonuptake rates of the isolated cells of D.norvegica (at 780 µmolm–2 s–1) ranged from 16 to 25 pg C cell–1h and were lower than those for C.tripos, G.digitaleand some other dinoflagellates. The variation in carbon uptakerates of isolated cells of D.norvegica corresponded with PBmof the red-tide phytoplankton assemblages in the P-l experiments. Our study showed that D.norvegica, a toxigenic dinoflagellate, was the main contributor to the primary production in the bloom.  相似文献

The Carbon Economy of Rubus chamaemorus L. II. Respiration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
MARKS  T. C. 《Annals of botany》1978,42(1):181-190
Respiratory activity and seasonal changes in carbohydrate contentof the storage organs of Rubus chamaemorus L. have been investigated.Leaf dark respiration rate increases in a non-linear mannerfrom 0·7 mg CO2 evolved dm–2 h–1 at 0 °Cto 4·6 rng CO2 evolved dm–2 hh–1 at 30 °C.Root and rhizome respiration rates increase from 1 µ1O2 uptake g–1 fresh weight h–1 at 0.7 ° C to10 µ10, uptake g–1 f. wt h–1 at 20 °C.Rhizome carbohydrate reserves decline from a September peakof 33 per cent alcohol insoluble d. wt to 16 per cent in May. The circumpolar distribution of R. chamaemorus is discussedin relation to the evidence presented here and in the precedingpaper of the series.  相似文献

Diel vertical studies of zooplankton community filtration rates(CFR) were undertaken in situ over two annual cycles in a shelteredbay of Lake le Roux, a large silt-laden oligotrophic reservoirin the arid subtropics of South Africa. The grazer communitywas dominated by a copepod, Meradiaptomus meridianus, whileDaphnia gibba. D. barbara and Moina brachiara accounted forthe balance. Spot estimates of CFR varied from 0.1 to 75% d–1( = 12.2) in the upper 10 m, while depth-integrated values ranged seasonally from 0.1 to 15% d–1 ( = 7.4). Most variation in CFR was attributable toseasonal changes in grazer biomass (0–408, = 58.2 µg 1–1 or 3–1000, 360 mg m–2 dry wt), and temperature (12–22C). Thesevariables are used to construct multiple linear regression modelsfor the prediction of CFR in this system. Some higher CFR values(up to 260% d–1 were measured in wanner (up to 26.5C)surface waters with an unusually rich zooplankion (786 rg 1–1).No significant did vertical changes in CFR or grazer biomasswere observed. Both variables declined sharply with depth. Inorganicturbidity dominated the seston, and algal carbon probably accountedon average for less than about 20% of the total POC available. The feeding responses of this turbid-water community were generallyconsistent with observations made on other assemblages, apartfrom seemingly high specific filtration rates which, atypically, were inversely related to temperature.  相似文献

Seventeen size-fractionation experiments were carried out duringthe summer of 1979 to compare biomass and productivity in the< 10, <8 and <5 µm size fractions with that ofthe total phytoplankton community in surface waters of NarragansettBay. Flagellates and non-motile ultra-plankton passing 8 µmpolycarbonate filters dominated early summer phytoplankton populations, while diatoms and dinoflagellates retained by 10 µm nylonnetting dominated during the late summer. A significant numberof small diatoms and dinoflagellates were found in the 10–8µm size fraction. The > 10 µm size fraction accountedfor 50% of the chlorophyll a standing crop and 38% of surfaceproduction. The <8 µm fraction accounted for 39 and18% of the surface biomass and production. Production by the< 8 µm fraction exceeded half of the total communityproduction only during a mid-summer bloom of microflagellates.Mean assimilation numbers and calculated carbon doubling ratesin the <8 µm (2.8 g C g Chl a–1 h–1; 0.9day–1)and<5 µm(1.7 g C g Chl a–1h–1; 0.5day–1)size fractions were consistently lower than those of the totalpopulation (4.8 g C g Chl a–1 h–1; 1.3 day–1)and the <10 µm size fraction (5.8 g C g Chl a–1h–1; 1.4 day –1). The results indicate that smalldiatoms and dinoflagellates in fractionated phytoplankton populationscan influence productivity out of proportion to their numbersor biomass. 1Present address: Australian Institute of Marine Science, P.M.B.No. 3, Townsville M.S.O., Qld. 4810, Australia.  相似文献

In situ filtration responses of Daphnia galeata to changes in food quality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the stoichiometric study of phyto–zooplankton interactions,a controversy exists about how Daphnia species regulate theirfeeding rate when submitted to low-quality food (i.e. high dietarycarbon:phosphorus [C:P] ratio). In this study, we gathered dataover 3 years on in situ clearance rates of a Daphnia galeatapopulation, by conducting grazing experiments from April 1998to October 2000 in the Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir (Grand-Duchyof Luxembourg). Observed clearance rates (2.5–13.5 mLindividual–1 day–1, mean 7.0 mL individual–1day–1) were correlated with population and environmentalvariables. Mean body size of Daphnia individuals was the bestpredictor of clearance rate (r2 = 0.639), followed by watertemperature (r2 = 0.262) and P concentration in the seston (r2  相似文献

The size, composition and distribution of particles in the watercolumn were surveyed in a shallow area (1 m depth) of a tropicallagoon (Cte d'Ivoire) during a sequence of wind-induced resuspension.Water samples were collected hourly near the surface duringone tidal cycle. Three characteristic periods were distinguished:a calm period with low wind speed (average 1.2 m s–1 awindy period with wind speed >3 m–1 s (range between4 and 6 m s–1) inducing sediment resuspension and a relaxationperiod during the decrease of wind velocity. From the analysisof several parameters (particle size and volume, bacteria. pico-and nanophytoplankton, ciliates and detritus), sediment resuspensioncaused a regular injection of particles from the bed. The finestparticles (1.5–6 µm: chlorophytes such as Chiorellaspp., picocyanobacteria such as Synechococcus) were the firstto be affected by wind-induced turbulence, whereas large particles(6–12 µm: diatoms. cyanobacteria such as Lyngbiaspp.) were dispersed into the water column at the highest windspeed. The fate of the different seston components differedaccording to their size. Therefore, wind-induced resuspensioncould greatly influence the food web organization through thequantity, quality and size of edible particles available ata given time.  相似文献

Changes in the elemental composition of the diatom Asterionellaformosa within mixed phytoplankton samples were determined overthe spring bloom period using energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis.Using a 10 kV electron microprobe, X-ray information from thetop 1–2 µm of the cell revealed overall mean concentrationsof: Si (4636 mmol kg–1 dry wt), P (82), S (54), Cl (71)K (94) and Ca (90). Concentrations of all elements showed widevariation within each date sample, with unimodal frequency distributionsapproximating to a Normal distribution. Correlation of the entiredata set demonstrated clear statistical associations betweenelements, including Si, P and K. Uptake of Si during the courseof the diatom bloom led to a major fall in lake water concentration(1.0 to 0.07 mg l–1), which correlated with a decreasein the mean cell Si concentration (6735 to 3107 mmol kg–1dry wt) during the final phase of the bloom. Mean cell concentrationsof P and K also showed marked decreases with time, in closeparallel with cell Si. These changes in P and K were attributedto the high level of internal correlation with Si and not toany significant decrease in P and K availability in the environment.  相似文献

Dry weights of individual Daphnia galeata and D. hyalina, whichcoexist in Lake Constance, were determined weekly during a twoyear investigation. From each sample and each species a length–weightrelationship (LWR) was calculated resulting in 54 (65) regressionequations based on N=2466 (3032) in D. galeata (D. hyalina). The constants (Ln(A)) and (B) of the LWRs showed a marked seasonalvariability, ranging from Ln(A)=1.0784–2.4740(1.0152–2.3860)and B=2.14–4.20 (2.11–4.15). The seasonal variabilityof the LWR was estimated with four different models. Condensingthe 54 (65) equations into one seasonal cycle resulted in amodel with an explained variance of r2=0.873 (0.869). Threemore models were established by calculating multiple regressionswith take stratification, average fecundity (E), and food concentrationas determining variates. Differences in LWRs of the two Daphniaspecies were significant (p <0.001). As the most useful approximationduring the period of stratification, LWRs are recommended forD. galeata: Ln(W)=(1.5674+0.0287*(E))+Ln(L)*(3.3611+0.0111*(E)) as a generalized LWR for an epilimnetic daphnid, and for D.hyalina: Ln(W)=(1.5593+0.0613*(E))+Ln(L)*(3.2709+0.0017*(E)) as LWR for a daphnid which migrates diurnally between epi andhypolimnion. The explained variance of this model is r2=0.843(0.826). The influence of food concentration in the epilimnionon LWRs was found to be significant on Ln(A) but not on (B). *This research project was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft  相似文献

Grazing and ingestion rates of laboratory-born Thalia democraticaaggregates and Dolioletta gegenbauri gonozooids, phorozooidsand oozooids were determined while fed Isochrysis galbana (4–5µm diameter) alone or in combination with Peridinium trochoideum(16–18 µm diameter) at concentrations of 0.15–0.70mm3 x 1–1. Grazing rates (ml x zooid–1 x 24 h –1)ranged from 10 to 355, and at zooid weights greater than 5 µgcarbon were in order oozooid > gonozooid > aggregate.Grazing rates increased exponentially with increasing zooidweight. Weight-specific grazing rates (ml x µgC–1x 24 h–1) were independent of the four-fold initial foodconcentration. Mean weight-specific grazing rates increasedlinearly with increasing zooid weight for the aggregates andoozooids, but gonozooid mean rates were independent of zooidweight. Aggregate and gonozooid ingestion rates (106 µm3x zooid–1 x 24 h–1) ranged from 4 to 134 while oozooidrates ranged from 3 to 67. All ingestion rates were independentof the initial food concentration but increased linearly withincreasing zooid weight at similar rates. All mean weight-specificingestion rates (ml x µgC–1 x 24 h–1) wereindependent of zooid weight. The mean aggregate daily ration(µgC ingested x µg body C–1) was 59% and themean doliolid ration was 132%. Field studies indicate that normalconcentrations of D. gegenbauri in the Georgia Bight clear theirresident water volume (1 m3) in about 4 months, but that highlyconcentrated, swarm populations which occur along thermohalinefronts clear their resident water volume in less than 1 day. 1Current address: MacLaren Plansearch Ltd., P.O.Box 13250, sta.A.,St.John's, Nfld. The growth rate of a population of Euphausia lucens from thewest coast of South Africa was estimated from laboratory studiesand from monthly size-frequency distributions of samples collectedover a 1-year period. Laboratory studies indicated that growthrates ranged from 0.131 (larvae) to 0.047 mm day–1 (juveniles),while size-frequency distributions suggested a growth rate of{small tilde}0.026 mm day–1 for the adults. The mean annualbiomass from the inshore, intermediate and offshore regionsranged from 9.75 to 47.29 mg dry wt m–3 with the highestbiomass being found in the inshore region. Calyptopis larvaewere present for most months of the year, indicating continuousrecrwtment. The relative contribution of flesh, moults and eggsto the total annual production was estimated separately forall three regions. Production due to growth (Pg) was estimatedto be 92.71–185.60 mg dry wt m–3 year–1, whileexuviai production (Pe) varied between 60.01 and 281.38 mg drywt m year Production of eggs (Pr) was estimated to range from5.07 to 12.39 mg dry wt m year the lowest value being obtainedin the inshore region. Moult production represented {small tilde}6times the mean biomass in each region, while the P/B ratio forflesh production varied from 3.92 to 8.91, the highest ratiobeing obtained in the offshore region. Total P/B ratios rangedfrom 10.14 to 16.01.  相似文献

The siphons and mantle edge of Donax serra and D. sordidus possesstwo types of ciliated sensory receptor. Type 1 has > 7 ciliawith an exposed length of 0.7–2.4 µm. Type II hasfewer cilia (2–5) which are 2–6 µm long. Athird type (Type III) described from the tips of the tentaclesof the siphon and mantle edge of D. sordidus, possesses twotufts of cilia which are 12 µm long. All three receptortypes appear to be primary receptors. Estimates of abundanceshow that receptors are most numerous on the tips of the siphontentacles (9.75 x 103. mm–2), and it is suggested thatthese receptors function as chemoreceptors. Food limitation for the cladoceran Daphnia galeta was measuredgrowing them with natural lake seston for one growing seasonunder standardized conditions in the laboratory. Growth rateswere related to several measures of food quantity. Particulateorganic carbon (POC) <30 µm was the best predictorof total food availability measured. It was better than chlorophyll-a(Chl-a) of the same size fraction, algal volume calculated fromcell counts or total particle volume from Coulter Counter measurements.Daphnids were also grown with Scenedesmus acutus under the sameconditions and their growth rates were compared. Sestonic carbonconcentrations were related to Scenedesmus carbon concentrations, that provided equal growth rates. The ratio of the carbon concentrationsof both food types (seston, Scenedesmus) represented the foodquality of seston. Thus, the nutritional quality of naturallake seston relative to a standard alga was determined overone growing season. Growth rates of seston fed animals revealedthat they were food limited during long periods of the year. This was also ascertained by standard clutch sizes of fieldanimals. However, the causes of food limitation varied withinthe duration of the studied period. Whereas during the clear-waterphase the food quantity was limiting (while the quality washigh: 100% Scenedesmus), shortly after on 10 June and 17 Junefood conditions were close to threshold concentrations due tolow food quality. For the remainder of the summer, a POC of0.3–0.6 mg C I–1 with a quality of  相似文献

Carbon dioxide efflux from 5- to 20-day-old pea fruits was measuredfor plants grown in controlled environment at 15 °C and600 µmol s–1 m–2 photon flux density in a16 h photoperiod. The rate of CO2 output per fruit increasedquickly from 0.005 to 0.018 mg CO2 min–1 during fruitelongation and subsequently more slowly to 0.030 mg CO2 min–1as the fruits inflated. On a d. wt basis the rate was highest,0.175 mg CO2 g–1 min–1, in the youngest fruits anddeclined curvilinearly with increasing fruit weight to 0.02mg CO2 g–1 min–1. Separation of maintenance andgrowth components was achieved by starvation methods and bymultiple regression analysis. From the latter method estimatesof the maintenance coefficient declined hyperbolically from150±8.7 mg carbohydrate g–1 d. wt day–1 inthe very young fruits (0.05 g) to 10.4±0.36 mg carbohydrateg–1 d. wt day–1 in older fruits (2.0 g). On a nitrogenbasis maintenance costs decreased from 2240 to 310 mg carbohydrateg–1 nitrogen day–1 while nitrogen concentrationfell from 6.7 to 3 per cent d. wt. A simple linear relationshipbetween maintenance cost per unit d. wt and nitrogen concentrationwas not observed. A growth coefficient of 50±6.7 mg carbohydrate g–1growth (equivalent to a conversion efficiency, YG, of 0.95)was estimated for all fruits examined. The overall efficiency, Y, increased from a mean of 0.70 to0.85 during fruit elongation and subsequently declined to 0.80.For a given fruit weight, efficiency increased asymptoticallywith relative growth rate; both asymptote and slope of the relationshipincreased as the fruits grew. Carbon dynamics in the 'grazing food chain' of a subtropical lake   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Studies were conducted over a 13 month period at four pelagicsites in eutrophic Lake Okeechobee, Florida (USA), in orderto quantify carbon (C) uptake rates by size-fractionated phytoplankton, and subsequent transfers of C to zooplankton. This was accomplishedusing laboratory 14C tracer methods and natural plankton assemblages. The annual biomass of picoplankton (<2 µm), nanoplankton(2–20 µm) and microplankton (<20 µm averaged60, 389 and 100 µg C 1–1 respectively, while correspondingrates of C uptake averaged 7, 51 and 13 µg C1–1h–1. The biomass of microzooplankton (40–200 µm)and macrozooplankton (<200 µm averaged 18 and 60 µgC 1–1, respectively, while C uptake rates by these herbivoregroups averaged 2 and 3 µg C 1–1 h–1. Therewere no strong seasonal patterns in any of the plankton metrics. The ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton C uptake averaged7% over the course of the study. This low value is typical ofthat observed in eutrophic temperate lakes with small zooplanktonand large inedible phytoplankton, and indicates ineffectiveC transfer in the grazing food chain. On a single occasion, there was a high density (<40 1–1) of Daphnia lumholrzii,a large-bodied exotic cladoceran. At that time, zooplanktoncommunity C uptake was <20 µg C 1–1 h–1and the ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton C uptake was near30%. If D.lumholrzii proliferates in Lake Okeechobee and theother Florida lakes where it has recently been observed, itmay substantially alter planktonic C dynamics.  相似文献

Ammonia excreted by mixed zooplankton populations over an annual(1972–1973) cycle in Narragansett Bay varied from 0.04to 3.21 µg at NH3-N dry wt–1 day–1, exclusiveof two exceptional rates measured one year apart: 11.74 and18.39 µg at NH3-N mg dry wt–1 day–1. Grossphytoplankton production integrated over the year (1972–1973)averaged 151 mg C m–3 day–1 for an 8 m water column;peaks of 332 and 905 mg C m–3 day–1 occurred duringthe winter-spring and summer blooms, respectively. Excretedammonia, integrated seasonally and annually, contributed only0.2% and 4.9% of the nitrogen required for observed gross productionduring the winter-spring and summer blooms, respectively, and4.4% annually. However, excreted ammonia may be an importantsource of the nitrogen required by Skeletonema costatum, thedominant diatom in Narragansett Bay, during the post-bloom periodwhen 186% of the nitrogen required for its net production wasmet by ammonia excretion. A combination of zooplankton ammoniaexcretion and benthic ammonia flux contributed 22% of the nitrogenrequired for the annual gross production (440 g C m–2)while 51% of the nitrogen required for the net production ofSkeletonema was accounted for by regenerated nitrogen. 1This research was supported by NSF grant GA 31319X awardedto Dr.T.J.Smayda.  相似文献
