Populations of three salt tolerant forage grasses (Cynodon dactylon, Imperata cylindrica, and Sporobolus arabicus) were collected from the salt-affected soils of the Salt Range and normal non-saline soils of the Faisalabad region to assess their mechanism of adaptation to saline stress by determining ion relations and some specific anatomical modifications. The population of S. arabicus from the Salt Range showed increased growth (root and shoot length, and root and shoot dry weights) under saline conditions. Salt tolerance in this species was related to structural modifications such as increased area of root, stem, leaf blade, and leaf sheath for toxic ion accumulation, increased vesicular hair density in leaves and aerenchyma formation in leaf sheath for ion exclusion. Uptake of toxic ions was high in the Salt Range population of C. dactylon and salt tolerance was related to ion exclusion through specific leaf structural modifications such as vesicular hairs. Salt tolerance in the Salt Range population of I. cylindrica was mainly associated with restricted uptake of toxic Na+ and Cl at root level, and accumulation of toxic ions via increased succulence in leaf blades and leaf sheaths in addition to some excretion of toxic ions through leaf sheath aerenchyma.  相似文献

Two populations of cogongrass [Imperata cylindrica (L.) Raeuschel], one from the saline regions of the Salt Range and the other from the non-saline regions of Faisalabad were assessed for salinity tolerance on the basis of some key morphological and physiological attributes. It was hypothesized that the tolerant population from the Salt Range must have developed some specific structural modifications, which are responsible for its better survival under high salinities. These adaptive components can be effectively used in modern technologies for improving degree of tolerance of other sensitive crops. The population from the Salt Range markedly excelled the Faisalabad population in terms of growth and physiological attributes measured in this study. The Faisalabad population of I. cylindrica was unable to survive at the highest salt level (200 mM NaCl). The tolerance of the Salt Range population to salt stress was found to be related to high accumulation of organic osmotica, particularly total free amino acids and proline as well as Ca2+ in the shoot. The distinctive structural modifications in the Salt Range population were found to be enhanced succulence, well-developed bulliform cells in leaves and smaller stomatal area.  相似文献

To examine anatomical adaptations in a potential forage grass, Imperata cylindrica (L.) Raeuschel, a population was collected from the natural salt-affected soils of the Salt Range, Pakistan. Using a hydroponic system, the degree of salt tolerance in terms of structural modifications in the Salt Range ecotype was compared with that in an ecotype collected from a normal non-saline habitat of the Faisalabad region. The Salt Range ecotype was superior to the Faisalabad ecotype in biomass production under saline conditions. High salt tolerance of the Salt Range ecotype was associated with increased succulence in root and leaf (mainly midrib), formation of aerenchyma in leaf sheath, increased vascular bundle area, metaxylem area and phloem area, highly developed bulliform cells on leaves and increased sclerification in root and leaf. Furthermore, both stomatal density and stomatal area were considerably reduced under high salinities in the Salt Range ecotype.  相似文献

The natural capacity of plants to endure salt stress is largely regulated by multifaceted structural and physio-biochemical modulations. Salt toxicity endurance mechanism of six ecotypes of Typha domingensis Pers. was evaluated by analyzing photosynthesis, ionic homeostasis, and stomatal physiology under different levels of salinity (0, 100, 200 and 300 mM NaCl). Typha populations were collected across different areas of Punjab, an eastern province in Pakistan. All studied attributes among ecotypes presented differential changes as compared to control. Different salt treatments not only affected gas exchange attributes but also shown significant modifications in stomatal anatomical changes. As compared to control, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, total chlorophyll contents and carotenoids were increased by 111%, 64%, 103% and 171% respectively, in Sahianwala ecotype among all other ecotypes. Similarly, maximum water use efficiency (WUE), sub stomatal CO2 concentration, sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl) contents were observed in Sahianwala (191%, 93%, 168%, 158%) and Knotti (162%, 75%, 146%, 182%) respectively, as compared to the others ecotypes. Adaxial and abaxial stomatal areas remained stable in Sahianwala and Knotti. The highest abaxial stomatal density was observed in Gatwala ecotype (42 mm2) and maximum adaxial stomatal density was recorded in Sahianwala ecotype (43 mm2) at 300 mM NaCl salinity. The current study showed that Typha ecotypes responded varyingly to salinity in terms of photosynthesis attributes to avoid damages due to salinity. Overall, differential photosynthetic activity, WUE, and changes in stomatal attributes of Sahianwala and Knotti ecotypes contributed more prominently in tolerating salinity stress. Therefore, Typha domingensis is a potential species to be used to rehabilitate salt affected lands for agriculture and aquatic habitat.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12298-021-00963-x.  相似文献

Though halophytes are naturally adapted to salinity, their salt-tolerance limits are greatly influenced by their provenance and developmental stage. In the present study, physio-biochemical responses of two Tunisian ecotypes of the oilseed coastal halophyte Cakile maritima (Brassicaceae) to salinity (0–400 mM NaCl) were monitored during germination and vegetative growth stages. Tabarka and Jerba seeds were collected from humid or arid climatic areas, respectively. Plant response to salinity appeared to depend on the ecotype and salinity levels. Increasing salinity inhibited germination process. Jerba seeds were found to be more salt tolerant than the Tabarka ones. At the autotrophic stage of growth and under salt-free conditions, Jerba was less productive than Tabarka (in terms of dry matter accumulation), but plant biomass production and leaf expansion (area and number) of the former ecotype were progressively improved by 100 mM NaCl, as compared to the control. In contrast, at the same salt concentration, these parameters decreased under increasing salinity in Tabarka (salt sensitive). Leaf chlorophyll content was reduced at severe salinity, but this effect was more conspicuous in the sensitive Tabarka plants. Na+ contents in the Jerba and Tabarka leaves collected from the 400 mM NaCl-treated plants were 17- and 12-fold higher than in the respective controls. This effect was accompanied by a significant reduction in the leaf K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ contents, especially in the salt-treated Tabarka. A significant accumulation of proline and soluble carbohydrates in leaves was found during the period of intensive leaf growth. These organic compounds likely play a role in leaf osmotic adjustment and in protection of membrane stability at severe salinity.  相似文献

Summary Seed and transplanted adult plants from populations of Festuca rubra, collected from inland, salt-marsh and sand-dune sites were grown on culture solution with added sodium chloride. The growth of the populations of the three habitats was reduced differentially by salt. The salt marsh ecotype Festuca rubra ssp. litoralis was only slightly affected and the inland ecotype F. rubra ssp. rubra was severely retarded at 60 mM NaCl. The dune ecotype F. rubra ssp. arenaria had an intermediate tolerance. The tolerant ecotypes accumulated less sodium chloride as compared to the sensitive ecotype, suggesting that salt tolerance is caused in part by salt exclusion. In addition, the dune ecotype F.r. arenaria appeared to be more drought tolerant than the salt marsh ecotype. Abscission of salt-saturated leaves does not function as an adaptation to salinity in Festuca rubra. All three ecotypes accumulated proline with increased salinity. The response was most pronounced in the drought tolerant F.r. arenaria, indicating that proline accumulation is a response to osmotic stress rather than to ion-specific effects of salinity. The observed differences in salt tolerance may be explained by differential sensitivity to toxic effects of sodium chloride. The occurrence on a beach plain of closely adjacent populations of F.r. arenaria and F.r. litoralis, differing markedly in salt tolerance, is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Salt stress is one of the most serious factors limiting the productivity of agricultural crops. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that vacuolar Na+/H+ antiporters play a crucial role in plant salt tolerance. In the present study, we expressed the Suaeda salsa vacuolar Na+/H+ antiporter SsNHX1 in transgenic rice to investigate whether this can increase the salt tolerance of rice, and to study how overexpression of this gene affected other salt-tolerant mechanisms. It was found that transgenic rice plants showed markedly enhanced tolerance to salt stress and to water deprivation compared with non-transgenic controls upon salt stress imposition under outdoor conditions. Measurements of ion levels indicated that K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ contents were all higher in transgenic plants than in non-transformed controls. Furthermore, shoot V-ATPase hydrolytic activity was dramatically increased in transgenics compared to that of non-transformed controls under salt stress conditions. Physiological analysis also showed that the photosynthetic activity of the transformed plants was higher whereas the same plants had reduced reactive oxygen species generation. In addition, the soluble sugar content increased in the transgenics compared with that in non-transgenics. These results imply that up-regulation of a vacuolar Na+/H+ antiporter gene in transgenic rice might cause pleiotropic up-regulation of other salt-resistance-related mechanisms to improve salt tolerance.Fengyun Zhao and Zenglan Wang contributed equally to this work.  相似文献

The influence of pre-sowing seed treatment with polyamines (2.5 mM putrescine, 5.0 mM spermidine and 2.5 mM spermine) on growth, photosynthetic capacity, and ion accumulation in two spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars MH-97 (intolerant) and Inqlab-91 (tolerant) was examined. The primed seeds of each treatment and non-primed seeds were sown in a field containing 15 dS m−1 NaCl. Although all three polyamines were effective in improving shoot growth and grain yield in both cultivars under saline conditions, the effect of spermine was very pronounced particularly in improving grain yield. Different priming agents did not affect the net CO2 assimilation rate and transpiration rate of either cultivar. However, pre-treatment with spermidine increased stomatal conductance (gs) in the tolerant cultivar, whereas with spermine stomatal conductance decreased in the intolerant cultivar under salt stress. Priming agents had different effects on the accumulation of different ions in wheat plant tissues. When spermidine and distilled water were used as priming agents, they were effective in reducing shoot [Na+] in the tolerant and intolerant cultivars, respectively under saline conditions. Although all priming agents caused an increase in shoot [K+], distilled water was more effective in improving shoot [K+] in both cultivars under salt stress. Pre-treatment with spermidine was very effective in reducing shoot [Cl] under saline conditions particularly in the tolerant cultivar. However, the pattern of accumulation of different ions in roots due to different seed priming treatments was not consistent in either cultivar except that root Na+ decreased due to priming with spermine and spermidine in the intolerant and tolerant cultivars under saline conditions. In conclusion, although all three priming agents, spermine, spermidine and putrescine, were effective in alleviating the adverse effect of salt stress on wheat plants, their effects on altering the concentration of different ions and growth were different in the two cultivars differing in salt tolerance.  相似文献

Local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity are two alternative mechanisms used by invasive plants for range expansion. We conducted a series of experiments to investigate the role of these mechanisms in the recent expansion of the invasive Ipomoea cairica from non-saline to salt-stressed coastal habitats. A comparison of the plant’s photosynthetic traits and construction costs across habitats was conducted through a field survey. Meanwhile, a full factorial greenhouse experiment was conducted with two ecotypes (non-saline and coastal) of I. cairica and two salinity gradients (water and 4 g L-1 NaCl solution) to evaluate the roles of the two strategies by comparing their main traits. The results revealed that the construction cost and Amax of I. cairica did not change with the habitat type. The ecotype and saline treatments, however, significantly influenced the plant growth. The non-saline ecotype (NE) generally showed higher or equal plasticity of biomass-allocation and functional traits compared to the coastal ecotype (CE). However, the fitness and biomass of the NE significantly decreased with salinity, whereas those aspects of the CE did not change. Our results indicate that the recent expansion of I. cairica into coastal areas may be accelerated by the local adaptation of the CE to salt stress. Additionally, in South China, the CE will most likely evolve adaptations to both saline and non-saline environments, which will further broaden the invasion range of I. cairica in the future.  相似文献

The inherent differences for salt tolerance in two maize cultivars (Agatti-2002 and Sahiwal-2002) were evaluated in pot experiments. Plants were grown in half-strength of Hoagland nutrient solution added with 0, 80, 100, 120, 140 and 160 mM of NaCl. Salt stress markedly reduced the shoot and root lengths and fresh and dry masses. Reduction in growth attributes was more pronounced in cv. Agatti-2002 than cv. Sahiwal-2002. Both maize cultivars exhibited significant perturbations in important biochemical attributes being employed for screening the crops for salt tolerance. Cultivar Sahiwal-2002 was found salt tolerant as compared to cv. Agatti-2002 because it exhibited lower levels of H2O2, malondialdehyde (MDA) and higher activities of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, cultivar Sahiwal-2002 exhibited less salt-induced degradation of photosynthetic pigments, lower levels of toxic Na+ and Cl and higher endogenous levels of K+ and K+/Na+ ratio. The results indicate that salt stress induced a marked increase in MDA, H2O2, relative membrane permeability, total soluble proteins and activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase andascorbate peroxidase). Moreover, increase in endogenous levels of Na+ and Cl and decrease in K+ and K+/Na+ ratio and photosynthetic pigments were recorded in plants grown under salinity regimes.  相似文献

Salt-induced changes in growth, photosynthetic pigments, various gas exchange characteristics, relative membrane permeability (RMP), relative water content (RWC) and ion accumulation were examined in a greenhouse experiment on eight sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cultivars. Sunflower cultivars, namely Hysun-33, Hysun-38, M-3260, S-278, Alstar-Rm, Nstt-160, Mehran-II and Brocar were subjected to non-stress (0 mM NaCl) or salt stress (150 mM NaCl) in sand culture. On the basis of percent reduction in shoot biomass, cvs. Hysun-38 and Nstt-160 were found to be salt tolerant, cvs. Hysun-33, M-3260, S-278 and Mehran-II moderately tolerant and Alstar-Rm and Brocar salt sensitive. Salt stress markedly reduced growth, different gas exchange characteristics such as photosynthetic rate (A), water-use efficiency (WUE) calculated as A/E, transpiration rate (E), internal CO2 concentration (C i) and stomatal conductance (g s) in all cultivars. The effect of 150 mM NaCl stress was non-significant on chlorophyll a and b contents, chlorophyll a/b ratio, RWC, RMP and leaf and root Cl, K+ and P contents; however, salt stress markedly enhanced C i /C a ratio, free proline content and leaf and root Na+ concentrations in all sunflower cultivars. Of all cultivars, cv. Hysun-38 was higher in gas exchange characteristics, RWC and proline contents as compared with the other cultivars. Overall, none of the earlier-mentioned physiological attributes except leaf K+/Na+ ratio was found to be effective in discriminating the eight sunflower cultivars as the response of each cultivar to salt stress appraised using various physiological attributes was cultivar-specific.  相似文献

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of pre-sowing seed treatment with triacontanol (TRIA) in canola (Brassica napus L.) cultivar (RBN-3060) under saline stress. Canola seeds were soaked in three levels of TRIA (0, 0.5, and 1 mg L?1) for 12 hours. Three levels of salt stress (0, 100, and 150 mM NaCl) in full strength Hoagland's nutrient solution were applied to 56-days-old plants. Salt stress caused a significant reduction in growth, gas exchange, photochemical quenching (qP), and shoot and root K+ contents, while increased leaf glycine betaine, free proline, and shoot Na+ contents. Pre-sowing seed treatment with TRIA increased shoot fresh weight, number of seeds per plant, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, ratio of chlorophyll a/b, qP, electron transport rate, shoot and root K+ contents, and free proline and glycine betaine contents of canola plants at various TRIA levels under nonsaline or saline conditions.

Five species of mangroves (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Excoecaria agallocha, Heritiera fomes, Phoenix paludosa and Xylocarpus granatum) were investigated with respect to their photosynthesis rate, chlorophyll content, mesophyll conductance, specific leaf area, stomatal conductance and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency under saline (15–27 PPT) and non-saline (1.8–2 PPT) conditions. Some inorganic elements were estimated from the leaf samples to compare the concentrations with change in salinity. Elevated assimilation rate coupled with increased chlorophyll content, more mesophyll and stomatal conductance and higher specific leaf area in non-saline condition indicates that these mangroves can grow well even with minimal salinity in soil. In B. gymnorrhiza, E. agallocha and P. paludosa the optimum PAR acquisition for photosynthesis was higher under salt stress, while the maximal rate of assimilation was lower even with minimal salinity. H. fomes and X. granatum followed the opposite trend, where the peak photosynthesis rate was lower under non-saline conditions even at a higher irradiance than in the saline forest. This indicates less affinity of H. fomes and X. granatum to high substrate salinity. Accumulation of Na+ increased in plants in saline substrate, while in most of the species, salinity imposed reduction in Ca+ and Mg+ uptake. Increased K+ content can be attributed to high substrate level K+ in non-saline soil. Trace amount of salinity induced Cu++ detected in leaves of H. fomes may impart some toxic effects. Photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency increased in non-saline soil that can be attributed to higher photosynthetic peak in most of the species and/or lower nitrogen accumulation in plant samples.  相似文献

Salinity tolerance can be attributed to three different mechanisms: Na+ exclusion from the shoot, Na+ tissue tolerance and osmotic tolerance. Although several key ion channels and transporters involved in these processes are known, the variation in expression profiles and the effects of these proteins on Na+ transport in different accessions of the same species are unknown. Here, expression profiles of the genes AtHKT1;1, AtSOS1, AtNHX1 and AtAVP1 are determined in four ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana. Not only are these genes differentially regulated between ecotypes, the expression levels of the genes can be linked to the concentration of Na+ in the plant. An inverse relationship was found between AtSOS1 expression in the root and total plant Na+ accumulation, supporting a role for AtSOS1 in Na+ efflux from the plant. Similarly, ecotypes with high expression levels of AtHKT1;1 in the root had lower shoot Na+ concentrations, due to the hypothesized role of AtHKT1;1 in retrieval of Na+ from the transpiration stream. The inverse relationship between shoot Na+ concentration and salinity tolerance typical of most cereal crop plants was not demonstrated, but a positive relationship was found between salt tolerance and levels of AtAVP1 expression, which may be related to tissue tolerance.  相似文献

Salt tolerance of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) was determined at three growth stages following observations by a number of workers that degree of salt tolerance of different crops varies with their ontogeny. The salt tolerance of three accessions, Local arhar, ICPL-151 and ICPL-850014 of pigeon pea was assessed at the germination, seedling and adult stages. There was no positive correlation between tolerance at the early growth stages and at the adult stage since no clear difference in salt tolerance of the three accessions was observed at the germination and the seedling stages, whereas accessions differed considerably at the adult stage. Although increasing salt concentrations adversely affected the growth of all three accessions, ICPL-151 was superior to the other two accessions in fresh and dry biomass, yield and yield components when tested at the adult stage. The tolerant accession, ICPL 151, accumulated significantly lower Na+and CI in shoots. By contrast it was higher in shoot and root K+, K/Na ratios, K vs Na selectivity, soluble sugars, free amino acids and proline compared with the other two accessions.  相似文献

Salinity stress is a major factor limiting plant growth and productivity of many crops including oilseed. The present study investigated the identification of salt tolerant mustard genotypes and better understanding the mechanism of salinity tolerance. Salt stresses significantly reduced relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll (Chl) content, K+ and K+ /Na+ ratio, photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and increased the levels of proline (Pro) and lipid peroxidation (MDA) contents, Na+ , superoxide (O2•− ) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in both tolerant and sensitive mustard genotypes. The tolerant genotypes maintained higher Pro and lower MDA content than the salt sensitive genotypes under stress condition. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) were increased with increasing salinity in salt tolerant genotypes, BJ-1603, BARI Sarisha-11 and BARI Sarisha-16, but the activities were unchanged in salt sensitive genotype, BARI Sarisha-14. Besides, the increment of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity was higher in salt sensitive genotype as compared to tolerant ones. However, the activities of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) were increased sharply at stress conditions in tolerant genotypes as compared to sensitive genotype. Higher accumulation of Pro along with improved physiological and biochemical parameters as well as reduced oxidative damage by up-regulation of antioxidant defense system are the mechanisms of salt tolerance in selected mustard genotypes, BJ-1603 and BARI Sarisha-16.  相似文献

Disease-free sugarcane plantlets of 11 cultivars derived from meristem cuttings were photoautotrophically grown on the MS medium and subsequently exposed to 0 (control) or 200?mM NaCl (salt stress) for 14?days. Sodium ion (Na+) in all sugarcane varieties was enriched when plantlets were subjected to 200?mM NaCl, except K88-1. Chlorophyll a (Chla), chlorophyll b (Chlb) and total carotenoids (Cx+c), in the salt stressed leaves of all genotypes decreased significantly, but the extent of decrease was variable among different genotypes. In contrast, proline content in salt stressed plantlets of all sugarcane genotypes increased markedly, except in genotypes K95, K92-2 and LK92-4. Maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), photon yield of PSII (??PSII), quantum efficiency of PSII (qP) and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in salt stressed plantlets of all genotypes were significantly dropped, whereas ??PSII and qP in cv. KK88-1 were alleviated, resulting in improved Pn. Moreover, growth parameters including shoot height, root length, fresh weight, dry weight and leaf area in salt stressed plantlets of all genotypes were significantly inhibited. The Na+ accumulation, pigment degradation, proline accumulation, photosynthetic abilities and growth inhibition in saline regimes were subjected to Hierarchical cluster analysis. Salt tolerant, K88-1 and UT94-7 and salt susceptible, K92-2 and LK92-4 classes of sugarcane genotypes were classified. The salt tolerant cultivars may be further studied including yield, sugar content and ratoon recovery rate in saline field trials.  相似文献

Summary Dry matter productivity under saline conditions was compared in 5 desiccation-tolerant resurrection grasses and one desiccation sensitive species, all in the genus Sporobolus. S. stapfianus was the most salt tolerant, requiring 215 mole NaCl m-3 to reduce shoot dry matter increments to 50% of increments in plants not treated with salt. (This was comparable to published values for the salt tolerant grass Diplachne fusca.) S. lampranthus was salt sensitive, requiring 35 mol m-3 for 50% control yields. S. festivus, S. aff. Fimbriatus, and the deisccation sensitive S.pyramidalis was moderately tolerant (150–170 mol m-3). The moderate salt resistance of S. aff. fimbriatus was attributed mainly to exclusion of NaCl by roots. Salt export through leaf surfaces was a minor factor. Half of the leaf mesophyll cells survived 50 min immersion in 200 mol NaCl m-3. Plants of S. aff. fimbriatus and S. pyramidalis tolerated a broad range of soil pH. Plants of 4 desiccation tolerant Sporobolus species survived air-dryness following 3 weeks pretreatment with salinities up to 200 mol m-3  相似文献

Nitraria retusa and Atriplex halimus (xero-halophytes) plants were grown in the range 0–800 mM NaCl while Medicago arborea (glycophyte) in 0–300 mM NaCl. Salt stress caused a marked decrease in osmotic potential and a significant accumulation of Na+ and Cl in leaves of both species. Moderate salinity had a stimulating effect on growth rate, net CO2 assimilation, transpiration and stomatal conductance for the xero-halophytic species. At higher salinities, these physiological parameters decreased significantly, and their percentages of reduction were higher in A. halimus than in N. retusa whereas, in M. arborea they decreased linearly with salinity. Nitraria retusa PSII photochemistry and carotenoid content were unaffected by salinity, but a reduction in chlorophyll content was observed at 800 mM NaCl. Similar results were found in A. halimus, but with a decrease in the efficiency of PSII (F′v/F′m) occurred at 800 mM. Conversely, in M. arborea plants we observed a significant reduction in pigment concentrations and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The marked toxic effect of Na+ and/or Cl observed in M. arborea indicates that salt damage effect could be attributed to ions’ toxicity, and that the reduction in photosynthesis is most probably due to damages in the photosynthetic apparatus rather than factors affecting stomatal closure. For the two halophyte species, it appears that there is occurrence of co-limitation of photosynthesis by stomatal and non-stomatal factors. Our results suggest that both N. retusa and A. halimus show high tolerance to both high salinity and photoinhibition while M. arborea was considered as a slightly salt tolerant species.  相似文献
