Several genes involved in growth control have lately been demonstrated to exhibit more potent effects on cell size than on cell proliferation. Many of these genes direct protein and ribosomal synthesis, highlighting the interdependence between cell size and macromolecular content. The failure to maintain normal cell size when these genes are deregulated suggests that, in certain contexts, cell growth and division are not coupled or coordinated. Several physiological repercussions of altering cell size have been identified.  相似文献

Testis size increases with colony size in cliff swallows   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
By using a sample of over 800 male cliff swallows (Petrochelidonpyrrhonota) that died during a rare climatic event in our Nebraskastudy area in 1996, we investigated how testis size was relatedto body size, age, parasite load, a bird's past colony-sizehistory, and spleen size. Testis volume increased with bodysize. After correcting for body size, testis volume was lowestfor birds age 1 and 2 years but did not vary with age for males3 years old or more. Birds occupying parasite-free (fumigated)colonies had significantly larger testes than did birds at nonfumigatedsites. Testis volume increased significantly with the size ofthe breeding colonies a bird had used in the past. Testis volumehad no relationship with spleen volume after correcting forbody size. The results show within a species that larger testesare favored in more social environments, probably reflectinga response to increased rates of extrapair copulation (and thussperm competition) among cliff swallows in large colonies. Thepresence of ectoparasites, by inflating levels of plasma corticosterone, may in turn reduce testis mass. These data provide no supportfor the hypothesis that large testes, perhaps by producing moretestosterone, are immunosuppressive and thus costly for thatreason.  相似文献

Patterns of sexual size dimorphism and body size in calanoid copepods are examined. We hypothesize that favorable conditions for development will result in large body size and high sexual size dimorphism among populations of a given species and that differences in this allometric relationship among species is governed by the male's role in insemination. We confirm that there is a greater advantage to large female size, normally the larger sex, when compared to males, hence leading to selection for developmental patterns favoring high size dimorphism. Individuals from populations of four centropagid copepod species were measured; other sizes were obtained from published sources. In the four species we examined, the relationships between prosome length and both clutch size and the ability to produce multiple clutches with one insemination were determined. Results show a trend toward hyperallometry in all centropagid species examined: sexual size dimorphism increases with increasing size. Large females produce larger clutches and more additional clutches on one insemination. That hyperallometry is not observed in diaptomid copepods may result from the greater role the male plays in reproduction. Males are needed for each clutch produced, hence the selective pressure to be larger is greater than that in the centropagidae.  相似文献

Few data are available for assessing the relative testicle size of orang-utans, Pongo pygmaeus, so measures were obtained for 31 individuals of varying age. It was shown that the volume of the testicles, calculated from in situ measures of testicle length and breadth, closely approximates testicle weight when multiplied by the specific gravity of solid tissue. Growth curves for body weight and data published for wild specimens were evaluated to obtain the weight most characteristic of male Pongo, and the ratio of testicle weight to body weight was calculated. The mean ratio for individuals with fully adult stature is 0.034, similar to but smaller than that of humans at about 0.050, and larger than the ratios reported for 5 gorillas at 0.013. The testicles mature faster than the body, however, so the mean ratio for young adult orang-utans is about 0.056 and resembles the ratio for humans more closely than the full adults. The differences between the ratios for a monogamous gibbon species, orang-utans, and humans is accounted for when testicle size relative to the weight of the female is considered. This is consistent with a sperm dilution effect produced by variation in the size of the female reproductive tract. The small relative testicle size of the gorilla is anomalous and requires verification as does the application of female size to scale the testicles. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Adult census population size (N) and effective number of breeders (Nb) are highly relevant for designing effective conservation strategies. Both parameters are often challenging to quantify, however, making it of interest to determine whether one parameter can be generalized from the other. Yet, the spatiotemporal relationship between N and Nb has not been well characterized empirically in many taxa. We analysed this relationship for 5–7 consecutive years in twelve brook trout populations varying greatly in N (49‐10032) and Nb (3‐567) and identified major environmental variables affecting the two parameters. N or habitat size alone explained 47–57% of the variance in Nb, and Nb was strongly correlated with effective population size. The ratio Nb/N ranged from 0.01 to 0.45 and increased at small N or following an annual decrease in N, suggesting density‐dependent constraints on Nb. We found no evidence for a consistent, directional difference between variability in Nb and/or Nb/N among small and large populations; however, small populations had more varying temporal variability in Nb/N ratios than large populations. Finally, Nb and Nb/N were 2.5‐ and 2.3‐fold more variable among populations than temporally within populations. Our results demonstrate a clear linkage between demographic and evolutionary parameters, suggesting that Nb could be used to approximate N (or vice versa) in natural populations. Nevertheless, using one variable to infer the other to monitor trends within populations is less recommended, perhaps even less so in small populations given their less predictable Nb vs. N dynamics.  相似文献

Sonication is a simple method for reducing the size of liposomes. We report the size distributions of liposomes as a function of sonication time using three different techniques. Liposomes, mildly sonicated for just 30 sec, had bimodal distributions when surface-weighted with modes at about 140 and 750 nm. With extended sonication, the size distribution remains bimodal but the average diameter of each population decreases and the smaller population becomes more numerous. Independent measurements of liposome size using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the nystatin/ergosterol fusion assay all gave consistent results. The bimodal distribution (even when number-weighted) differs from the Weibull distribution commonly observed for liposomes sonicated at high powers over long periods of time and suggests that a different mechanism may be involved in mild sonication. The observations are consistent with the following mechanism for decreasing liposome size. During ultrasonic irradiation, cavitation, caused by oscillating microbubbles, produces shear fields. Large liposomes that enter these fields form long tube-like appendages that can pinch-off into smaller liposomes. This proposed mechanism is consistent with colloidal theory and the observed behavior of liposomes in shear fields.  相似文献

Leaf size and inflorescence size may be allometrically related traits   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Corner's rules for plant form relate the degree of branching to branch diameter, and branch diameter to leaf or inflorescence size. We report the first interspecific test of these rules for inflorescence size and branch diameter. We derived a simple corollary of Corner's rules; since leaf size and inflorescence size are both correlated to branch thickness, they may be correlated to each other. This corollary holds for Leucadendron and Protea (Proteaceae), and in certain other taxa in the Asteraceae, Bruniaceae and Pinaceae which also have leaves and reproductive structures on the same shoot. For such taxa this implies that selection for aspects of floral display (inflorescence size, pollination type) may also be expressed at the level of leaf size and vice versa. This has implications for many aspects of botany and also points to the importance of the co-ordinating role of plant architecture for aspects of plant form.  相似文献

Coalescent process with fluctuating population size and its effective size   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We consider a Wright-Fisher model whose population size is a finite Markov chain. We introduce a sequence of two-dimensional discrete time Markov chains whose components describe the coalescent process and the fluctuation of population size. For the limiting process of the sequence of Markov chains, the relationship of the expectation of coalescence time to the harmonic and the arithmetic means of population sizes is shown, and the Laplace transform of the distribution of coalescence time is calculated. We define the coalescence effective population size (cEPS) by the expectation of coalescence time. We show that cEPS is strictly larger (resp. smaller) than the harmonic (resp. arithmetic) mean. As the population size fluctuates more quickly (resp. slowly), cEPS is closer to the harmonic (resp. arithmetic) mean. For the case of a two-valued Markov chain, we show the explicit expression of cEPS and its dependency on the sample size.  相似文献

Experiments on clutch size and nest size in passerine birds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Tore Slagsvold 《Oecologia》1989,80(3):297-302
Summary Results of experiments on three passerine species suggest that brood size may be constrained by nest size, since the breeding success of pairs provided with large nestcups was greater than that of those provided with small artificial nestcups. These results may have important implications, e.g. to the design of experiments involving manipulation of clutch and brood size. A small nestcup is requisite for successful hatching during the incubation period, but a large one for successful rearing during the nestling period. In nature this difference may select for types of nesting materials that are elastic, such as mosses and lichens. However, experiments showed that such materials rapidly absorb rainwater but only slowly dry out. In addition, because large nests dry out more slowly than small nests, selection will favour small nests among those open-nesting species that have exposed nests. A further possible nest size constraint on open-nesters is nest predation. However, no difference in the predation rate was found in experiments with small and large artificial nests.  相似文献

Body size of virtual rivals affects ejaculate size in sticklebacks   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Sperm competition occurs when sperm of two or more males competeto fertilize a given set of eggs. Theories on sperm competitionexpect males under high risk of sperm competition to increaseejaculate size. Here we confirm this prediction experimentallyin the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Inthis species, sneaking (i.e., stealing of fertilizations byneighboring males) can lead to sperm competition. Sneaking malesinvade foreign nests, and the owners vigorously try to preventthis intrusion. In such fights, male body size is assumed tobe an important predictor of success. Consequently, the riskof sperm competition may depend on the size of a potential competitor. We experimentally confronted males before spawning with eithera large or a small computer-animated rival. We show that malesejaculated significantly more sperm after the presentation ofthe larger virtual rival than after the small stimulus. In addition, the time between the initiation of courting and the spawningwas shorter in the large virtual male treatment. The resultssuggest that stickleback males tailor ejaculate size relativeto the risk of sperm competition perceived by the size of apotential competitor.  相似文献

We analysed clutch size versus nest size in 153 broods of the Northern Flicker Colaptes auratus , a woodpecker using natural cavities in British Columbia, Canada. Larger volume cavities were less susceptible to predation and cavity size was positively associated with the age and body size of males and with the body condition of female parents. Although clutches varied between 4 and 11 eggs, and the floor area of cavities varied about 5-fold, we found no relationship between clutch size and floor area or cavity volume. To see if there were fitness consequences to clutch size relative to nest size, we examined hatching success and nestling mortality in flicker broods. Hatching success was not related to cavity size, but crowding slightly reduced nestling survival even when clutch size was controlled statistically. However, there was no effect of cavity size on the total number of nestlings fledged. Newly excavated flicker cavities were smaller than reused cavities suggesting a cost to excavation. This cost, coupled with the minimal fitness consequences of overcrowding, may explain why flickers do not adjust clutch size to cavity size.  相似文献

For a Wright–Fisher model with mutation whose population size fluctuates stochastically from generation to generation, a heterozygosity effective population size is defined by means of the equilibrium average heterozygosity of the population. It is shown that this effective population size is equal to the harmonic mean of population size if and only if the stochastic changes of population size are uncorrelated. The effective population size is larger (resp. smaller) than the harmonic mean when the stochastic changes of population size are positively (resp. negatively) autocorrelated. These results and those obtained so far for other stochastic models with fluctuating population size suggest that the property that effective population sizes are always larger than the harmonic mean under the fluctuation of population size holds only for continuous time models such as diffusion and coalescent models, whereas effective population sizes can be equal to or smaller than the harmonic mean for discrete time models.  相似文献

Lysosomes are key cellular catabolic centers that also perform fundamental metabolic, signaling and quality control functions. Lysosomes are not static and they respond dynamically to intra‐ and extracellular stimuli triggering changes in organelle numbers, size and position. Such physical changes have a strong impact on lysosomal activity ultimately influencing cellular homeostasis. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on lysosomal size regulation, on its physiological role(s) and association to several disease conditions.  相似文献

1. Temperature-induced egg size variation and its effects on successive life stages in the carabid beetle Notiophilus biguttatus were examined.
2. In the laboratory, across temperature regimes, egg size and number were inversely related; number of eggs and total egg mass were higher, but egg size was smaller at high temperatures.
3. Food intake rate was shown not to be involved in the temperature effect on egg size.
4. Within the higher temperature regimes, among females, egg size was negatively correlated with number of eggs and with total egg mass.
5. Data on egg mortality and egg development time did not explain why at low temperature eggs were larger than at high temperature.
6. Larvae hatching from eggs produced at a low temperature were heavier than larvae from eggs produced at a high temperature, irrespective of temperature during development.
7. In a prolonged outdoor experiment (January – July), encompassing the main breeding period of N. biguttatus , egg size decreased and both egg production rate and total egg mass increased in the course of the experiment.
8. In the field, an effect of seasonal change in temperature on adult body size was found; teneral beetles that had their juvenile period early in the season were larger than those that had their juvenile period later in the season.
9. The results of the study suggest a mechanistic explanation in which the egg size response to temperature follows from a difference in temperature sensitivity between two processes in oogenesis; adaptiveness of the temperature response was not clarified.  相似文献
