The Late Tortonian-Early Messinian Abad Member in the Sorbas Basin, south-east Spain contains abundant foraminifera. Planktonic foraminifera have been used to reconstruct the environmental conditions that developed within the basin. Benthonic foraminifera reveal a detailed picture of the palaeoenvironment. After an initial deepening episode, from upper epibathyal ( c . 200 m) depths to lower epibathyal ( c . 1000 m) depths, the basin progressively shallowed to shelf depths ( c . 100 m); this palaeobathymetric reconstruction thus describes an initial rapid transgressive episode, a highstand and a regressive phase; the basin water mass became progressively warmer, and yet there was no significant increase in salinity or oxygen level in the water mass. The lack of any microfossil evidence to support an increase in the salinity levels towards the top of the Abad Member indicates a rapid environmental switch from normal marine conditions during the deposition of the Abad Member to hypersaline conditions during deposition of the overlying Yesares Member and precipitation of great thicknesses of gypsum. This research illustrates the necessity for high resolution sampling, approximate to the standard interval (10 feet: c . 3 metres) used in industrial boreholes, for Mediterranean Late Miocene stratigraphies, and indicates that all previous palaeoenvironmental studies on the Sorbas Basin have had inadequate sampling regimes which do not represent the evolving environmental conditions of the Abad Member.  相似文献

Cretaceous shallow-marine carbonate rocks of SW Slovenia were deposited in the northern part of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform. A 560-m-thick continuous Upper Cenomanian to Santonian carbonate succession has been studied near Hru?ica Village in Matarsko Podolje. With regard to lithological, sedimentological, and stratigraphical characteristics, the succession has been divided into nine lithostratigraphic units, mainly reflecting regressive and transgressive intervals of larger scale. During the latest Cenomanian and Early Turonian, hemipelagic limestones were deposited on top of shallow-marine lagoon and peritidal Upper Cenomanian deposits indicating relative sea-level rise. Subsequently, the deeper marine depositional setting was gradually filled by clinoform bioclastic sand bodies overlain by peritidal and shallow-marine low-energy mainly lagoonal lithofacies. Similar lithofacies of predominately inner ramp/shelf depositional settings prevail over the upper part (i.e., Coniacian to Santonian) of the succession. In the area, the Upper Cetaceous carbonate rocks are separated from the overlying Lower Eocene (Upper Paleocene?) carbonate sequence by regional unconformity denoted by distinct paleokarstic features. On the Adriatic Carbonate Platform the deeper marine carbonate setting, developed at the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary, is usually correlated with OAE2 and related eustatic sea-level rise. Similarly, subsequent reestablished shallow-marine conditions are related to Late Turonian long- and short-term sea-level fall. However, we are suggesting that deeper marine deposits were deposited in a tectonically induced intraplatform basin formed simultaneously with the uplift of the northern and northeastern marginal parts of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform.  相似文献

We present here an overview of the Oligocene-early Miocene transgressive cover of the Betic-Rifian Internal Zone (BRIZ). Biostratigraphic data, depositional environment and stratigraphical correlations are here inferred based upon the planktonic foraminifera. The studied transgressive cover developed in two successive groups, which were generally deposited in the same depocenters. The older group (Ciudad Granada group, late Oligocene-Aquitanian pro-parte) unconformably rests over the Malaguide-Ghomaride Complex, while the younger one (Viñuela group, early Burdigalian) can either lie over Ciudad Granada group (central depositional areas) or rest on the Malaguide-Ghomaride and/or Alpujarride-Sebtide complexes (marginal areas). It is noteworthy that no major sedimentary gap nor unconformity were evidenced between these two groups in the central depositional areas, so no major nappe structuring may be suggested during this depositional time span. The stacking pattern of these sedimentary groups, the facies change evidenced between the bordering and the central successions, as well as some synsedimentary tectonic features recorded at their base levels, suggest that they corresponded to transgressive pulses induced by transtensive tectonics, which were related to both the opening of the Algero-Provençal and Alboran basins, and the westward migration of the BRIZ.  相似文献

The siliciclastic, up to 4,000 m thick Upper Triassic–Bajocian Shemshak Formation is widespread across the Iran Plate, especially in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran. In contrast to its lower, generally non-marine part, the upper part is marine. Based on the Tazareh section of the eastern Alborz, an integrated analysis of this marine interval is presented. The 1,700 m thick marine sedimentary succession records a gradual deepening from inner to mid and outer shelf environments from the Middle Toarcian to early Late Aalenian. During the Late Aalenian–Early Bajocian, the trend was reversed and infilling of the basin by a large delta system occurred. This general facies development reflects a nearly symmetrical transgressive–regressive (T–R) megacycle, terminated by the inter-regional mid-Cimmerian tectonic event. A renewed transgression in the early Late Bajocian initiated a subsequent sedimentary megacycle. The bioturbated mid and outer shelf sediments contain a low to moderately diverse benthic fauna dominated by deep burrowing bivalves, often preserved in the growth position. A hierarchy of four orders of sedimentary cycles can be recognized (parasequences, parasequence sets, unconformity-bounded third-order depositional sequences, and the 13 ma long second-order T–R megacycle). A regional correlation with the Jajarm area (200 km to the east) shows a very similar temporal facies pattern of the upper Shemshak Formation. The eastern Alborz T–R cycle is completely out-of-phase with other (eustatic) sea-level curves, suggesting regional tectonic control. Rough estimates of subsidence rates give an average value of 126 m/ma. However, much higher values for the Aalenian (230 m/ma), particularly the Late Aalenian (700 m/ma), indicate a distinct increase in subsidence rate towards the Early Bajocian mid-Cimmerian tectonic event. These high subsidence rates suggest that the sediments of the Shemshak Formation of the eastern Alborz formed in a (young) rift basin.  相似文献

Upper Cretaceous strata in the Pasquia Hills of the northern Manitoba Escarpment, eastern Saskatchewan, Canada provide a detailed paleoenvironmental and sea-level record of the eastern margin of the Western Interior Seaway. Sediments deposited during the Cenomanian/Turonian Greenhorn marine cycle are dominantly black mudstones deposited in a stratified water column, with bottom-water anoxia recurrently reaching into the photic zone. A middle Cenomanian sea-level lowstand event followed by transgression left a series of bonebeds within the Belle Fourche Member of the Ashville Formation, indicating a sedimentary environment starved of coarse siliciclastics. Maximum sea level resulted in the formation of limestone beds within the Favel Formation, further favoured by reduced terrigenous sediment input compared to the western margin. Limestone sedimentation was followed by a phase of increased freshwater input under lower sea level conditions, and reducing zoo- and phytoplankton diversities. During final Greenhorn regression, eastern Saskatchewan probably turned into a restricted basin severely limiting marine circulation. Poor or absent benthic foraminiferal assemblages and biomarker analysis suggest prevailing watermass stratification throughout the Cenomanian/Turonian transgressive/regressive cycle. This was caused either by a freshwater lid, stratification of Boreal and Tethyan-derived watermasses, or both, to various intensities affected by changing sea level. Basin oxygenation during Niobrara time varies between localities along the eastern margin as documented by presence/absence of benthic and planktic foraminifera.  相似文献

The Cenozoic marine succession of Kutch, India, is rich in benthic molluscs and other invertebrates, but nautiloids are very scanty. Three nautiloid species, with two being new, are reported here: Deltoidonautilus vredenburgi n. sp. from the Early Eocene Naredi Formation, Cimomia forbesi (d’Archiac and Haime, 1854) from the Middle Eocene Harudi Formation, and Aturia gujaratensis n. sp. from the Early Miocene Khari Nadi and Chhasra formations. Taphonomic and sedimentary features reveal that the Eocene nautiloids were parautochthonous whereas the Miocene species might have been transported post-mortally for some distance. Palaeobiogeographic distribution of the Cenozoic nautiloids of the Indian subcontinent and other parts of the world reveals that though the genera are pandemic the species are often endemic to a basin or a province. Specific endemism and pattern of broad faunal similarity of nautiloids among different provinces within the Tethys Realm (sensu Harzhauser et al., 2002) mimic those of the benthic molluscs during the Palaeogene.  相似文献

The Upper Devonian reef complexes of the Canning Basin contain some of the world’s best exposed, continuous stratigraphic sections through the Frasnian-Famennian boundary. The facies distribution and composition of these reef complexes record interactions among sea level changes, sediment supply, ocean chemistry, and paleoecology. Changes in relative sea level produced spatial shifts in reef platform development and regional changes in sediment supply that can be correlated across facies boundaries using a combination of sequence stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and carbon isotope stratigraphy. During the lowstand interval below the Frasnian-Famennian boundary, the reef margin advanced down the reef slope in shallow-water environments, and siliciclastics locally dominated in the marginal slope environment. Compilation of a broad late Frasnian to early Famennian sequence stratigraphic framework for the Canning Basin demonstrates that transgressive intervals correlate to positive carbon isotopic excursions within the basin. These isotopic shifts also can be correlated to time-equivalent positive carbon isotopic excursions reported from transgressive intervals in Europe. Thus, the late Frasnian transgressions in the Canning Basin were primarily eustatic rather than tectonic in origin, and positive carbon isotopic signatures of the Kellwasser horizons are globally correlative.  相似文献

The Late Cenozoic uplift history of a sedimentary basin located in the axial part of the Ou Backbone Range, Northeast Japan, was studied using detailed mapping, fission-track dating and basin analysis. The subsidence analysis of the basin clarified the more complex stepwise uplift of the Ou Backbone Range. Three stages of uplift have been recognized and are interpreted to be the result of compressional stress, possibly accompanied by basin inversion. The three stages are identified as (1) a phase of surface uplift and regional unconformity (12-9 Ma), (2) a stage of differential uplift and compression (6.5-3 Ma) and (3) an intense compression stage (∼ 3 Ma). In the first stage, the eastern sector of the Backbone Range uplifted and a notable unconformity was formed at ∼ 10 Ma. The western sector remained submerged, suggesting that the eastern sector uplifted earlier than the western sector. Although the first uplift stage has been regarded as a tectonically quiet period in Northeast Japan, this tectonic event at ∼ 10 Ma is supposed to have a regional origin because coeval tectonic events took place across all Northeast Japan, as well as on the eastern margin of Asia. This study thus provides new insights into the Neogene tectonic evolution in the eastern margin of Asia.  相似文献

A large, shallow braided river delta sedimentary system developed in the Yanchang Formation during the Triassic in the southwest of the Ordos basin. In this braided delta system, abundant oil and gas resources have been observed, and the area is a hotspot for oil and gas resource exploration. Through extensive field work on outcrops and cores and analyses of geophysical data, it was determined that developments in the Late Triassic produced favorable geological conditions for the development of shallow water braided river deltas. Such conditions included a large basin, flat terrain, and wide and shallow water areas; wet and dry cyclical climate changes; ancient water turbulence; dramatic depth cycle changes; ancient uplift development; strong weathering of parent rock; and abundant supply. The shallow water braided river delta showed grain sediment granularity, plastic debris, and sediment with mature composition and structure that reflected the strong hydrodynamic environment of large tabular cross-bedding, wedge cross-bedding, and multiple positive rhythms superimposed to form a thick sand body layer. The branch river bifurcation developed underwater, and the thickness of the sand body increased further, indicating that the slope was slow and located in shallow water. The seismic responses of the braided river delta reflected strong shallow water performance, indicated by a progradation seismic reflection phase axis that was relatively flat; in addition, the seismic reflection amplitude was strong and continuous with a low angle and extended over considerable distances (up to 50 km). The sedimentary center was close to the provenance, the width of the river was large, and a shallow sedimentary structure and a sedimentary rhythm were developed. The development of the delta was primarily controlled by tectonic activity and changes in the lake level; as a result, the river delta sedimentary system eventually presented a “small plain, big front” character.  相似文献

The kilometer-sized and 100-meter-thick carbonate platforms of the Escalada Fm. I and II (Middle Pennsylvanian) accumulated in the foredeep of a marine foreland basin during the transgressive phases of 3rd-order sequences and were buried by prograding siliciclastic deltaic systems in the course of the subsequent highstand. The carbonate successions show a general upward trend from grain- to mud-supported carbonates, interfingering landwards with siliciclastic deposits of a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate shelf (Fito Fm.) adjacent to deltaic systems. The spatial variability of the carbonate facies and the high-frequency (4th–5th order) cycles, from the platform margin-outer platform to the deltaic systems, has been interpreted from basin reconstruction. Carbonate facies include skeletal grainstone to packstone, ooidal grainstone, burrowed skeletal wackestone, microbial and algal boundstone to wackestone forming mounds, various algal bafflestone and coral biostromes in areas with siliciclastic input. These high-frequency transgressive–regressive cycles are interpreted to record allocyclic forcing of high-amplitude glacioeustasy because they show characteristic features of icehouse cycles: thickness >5 m, absence of peritidal facies, and in some cases, subaerial exposure surfaces capping the cycles. In the mixed cycles, siliciclastics are interpreted as late highstand to lowstand regressive deposits, whereas carbonates as transgressive-early highstand deposition. The lateral and vertical variability of the facies in the glacioeustatic cycles was a response to deposition in a rapidly subsiding, active foreland basin subjected to siliciclastic input, conditions that might be detrimental to the growth of high-relief carbonate systems.  相似文献

The marine fossil assemblages of the Pliocene of south Spain constitute the record of the marine fauna that colonised the western part of the Mediterranean after the Messinian Salinity Crisis. This work focuses on the analysis of lithofacies and fossil assemblages including trace fossils, invertebrates, and vertebrates with special attention to taphonomic features, for interpreting palaeoenvironmental conditions in the Vera Basin (SE Spain). The sedimentary sequences of the northern region of the Vera Basin display diverse stratigraphical, sedimentological, and palaeontological features that correspond to the evolution of a fan-delta in a narrow basin. The Vera Basin was characterised by shallow-marine shelf conditions during the early-mid Pliocene (Cuevas Formation). The basin emergence with the development of Gilbert-type fan deltas (Vera Member), and a protected, partially-enclosed marine embayment (Almanzora Member) occurred during the mid-late Pliocene due to regional uplift and movements of the Palomares strike-slip Fault along the eastern basin margin. The progradation of the central fan-delta lobes and the interaction with marginal fan-delta resulted in the partitioning of the basin that formed a small sub-basin with restricted stagnant conditions that favoured a Konservat Fossil-Lagerstätte. The high input of siliciclasts due to the uplift context of the margins of the basin favoured a high sedimentation rate and the fast burial of vertebrate remains. Fossil marine mammals occurs from shallow shelf deposits (Cuevas Formation) to bottomset (Cuevas Formation-Vera Member transition) and lower part of the clinoforms in the foreset (Vera Member). Cetacean remains are usually recorded not only in the relatively deep-water silty marls and sandy marls of the outer shelf and distal facies of the fan-delta (Espiritu Santo Formation), but also in the shallower coarse sands and conglomerates (Cuevas Formation and Espiritu Santo Formation). Sirenian remains, in contrast, are only recorded in coarse sand facies (Cuevas Formation and Espiritu Santo Formation) associated to charcoal wood fragments deposited in shallow waters near the shoreline. This narrow and relatively protected basin is interpreted as an area of reproduction and nursery of juveniles on the basis of the presence of cetaceans.

The Taulanne Limestone Formation of the Castellane region (South Alpine Foreland Basin of France) represents an Oligocene lake depositional system developed above the marine Nummulitic succession. A sedimentological analysis of the Taulanne limestone allows the identification of nine marine, lacustrine, and palustrine facies. The spatial and temporal distribution of these facies records five depositional sequences that are correlated between the Sant Peire section (edge of the lake) and the Prés section (central lake). Water-level variations highlight the high-frequency balance between drying and wetting periods under fluctuating climatic conditions. Lacustrine facies developed during more humid periods while palustrine facies correspond to more arid conditions and longer lake shoreline exposure. At the basin scale, the lateral changes in accommodation space are attributed to differential subsidence between the Prés and the Sant Peire sections, which permitted the deposition of a thicker succession in the central part of the lake (Prés section). The Taulanne limestone records a marine to continental transition. The progressive filling of the basin is related to the regional tectonic activity, namely the emplacement of the Embrun-Ubaye nappes to the northeast of the study area at about 30–32 Ma. This final regressive trend represents the transition between the underfilled flysch stage (marine Nummulitic succession) of a foreland-basin cycle to the overfilled stage (alluvial Red Molasse deposits) during the primary exhumation of the Internal Alps.  相似文献

During the Eocene, the southwest Tarim Basin was a large epicontinental sea as a part of the Turun Sea in the eastern Paratethys. The marine succession of the Kalatar Formation is exposed along the piedmonts of the southern Tian Shan and western Kunlun Shan, and can be subdivided into three members. On the southern side of the Tarim Basin, a non-barrier shore-to-shelf, siliciclastic-dominated system, locally with carbonates and oyster biostromes, developed along the western Kunlun Shan, where river input led to a seaward arrangement of alluvial fan, foreshore, shoreface, and offshore facies. In contrast, on the northern side of the Tarim Basin, a carbonate ramp system formed along the southern Tian Shan, including shallow bioclastic-oolitic grainstone shoals, oyster beds, and red algal rudstones along with a number of evaporite units, which formed under hypersaline tidal-flat and lagoonal conditions. The basin center was a largely moderate deep and low-energy embayment facies. Deposition of the mixed carbonate-siliciclastic Kalatar Formation was controlled by tectonic activity, in particular the development of the Himalayan orogeny with the closure of Paratethys sea-level fluctuations, and arid-humid climate variations.  相似文献

The sedimentation of the Late Cretaceous Gosau Group of the Northern Calcareous Alps records the complex geodynamic evolution of the northern part of the Austroalpine microplate. The tectonically controlled sedimentation and facies distribution were mainly governed by the oblique subduction of the Pennic-Ligurian ocean below the Austroalpine margin. Most of the Gosau successions comprise two distinct sedimentary complexes. The Lower Gosau Subgroup (upper Turonian-Campanian) is characterized by terrestrial to shallow-marine facies associations: alluvial fan and fan delta deposits, shallow-marine sandstones and sandy limestones, and storm-influenced nearshore and shelf deposits. During the early Santonian sea-level highstand, a great part of the Northern Calcareous Alps was covered by a shallow shelf sea. Palaeotransport directions point to source areas situated both to the north and to the south of the Northern Calcareous Alps.

The Upper Gosau Subgroup (upper Santonian-Eocene) comprises deep-water hemipelagic and turbiditic deposits. Rapid subsidence into bathyal to abyssal depths started diachronously from the northwest (Santonian) to the southeast (Maastrichtian) after a short phase of deformation and erosion. Abyssal deposits in the northern parts of the Northern Calcareus Alps and north-directed palaeotransport indicate a tilting of the slope towards the north. This subsidence pulse is attributed to an event of subcrustal tectonic erosion, probably triggered by the subduction of a topographic high of the South Penninic ocean. The relationships of the Gosau Group of the Austroalpine unit to Late Cretaceous deposits of the Carpathians and Southern Alps are discussed in the framework of a plate tectonic model.  相似文献

With the breakup of Gondwanaland a northwards-transgressing sea reached southern Mozambique in mid-Cretaceous times. The deeply weathered Karoo volcanics of southern Mozambique are overlain by glauconitic silty sandstones of Barremian to Cenomanian age, with marginal disconformities in the lowest and uppermost Albian. After a late Cenomanian to Turonian hiatus, with local deposition of continental sediments, the marine facies reappeared with silty sandstones. In the south these sandstones are of Coniacian age, becoming younger to the north, where only the Campanian or Maestrichtian are represented. A minor unconformity is present within the Upper Maestrichtian—Lower Paleocene sequence. Shallow-water sediments indicate a further regression in late Eocene times. Oligocene sediments appear only in the deeper parts of the basin. A last transgression occurred in the Early Miocene. Single local ingressions might have followeduntil the Pliocene. Since the Pliocene, a general epeirogenic uplift of the South African subcontinent, combined with the tectonic activity of the East African Rift, led to a period of erosion. The Quaternary is characterized by a thick cover of eolian sands. The geological history, stratigraphy and paleogeography on both sides of the Mozambique Channel, and recent results of deep-sea drilling in the channel, suggest a more or less unchanged position of Madagascar relative to Africa since the Late Paleozoic.  相似文献

Summary The marine Paleogene of the Tremp Basin in the Central Southern Pyrenees corresponds to four depositional sequences which are related to global eustatic third order cycles (Tejas A 2.3–2.6). Associated transgressive and downlap surfaces coincide with boundaries of biozones. Lowstand systems tracts consist of estuarine and braid delta systems. Transgressive and highstand systems tracts are composed of carbonate banks and reefs. Slow thrust-induced changes of the basin topography conditioned the basic type and the areal distribution of carbonate highstand and clastic lowstand systems. Rapid relative sea level changes controlled the activity and internal dynamic of the depositional systems. E-W directed blind thrust anticlines are covered during highstand periods by carbonate fringing banks withNummulites bars. N-S orientation of thrust anticlines leads to the evolution of reef-dominated barrier banks and shelf lagoonal homoclinal ramps. On-bank transport of carbonate sands dominates during transgressions, off-bank transport during highstand periods. Continuous thrusting during the Ilerdian caused angular unconformities only in combination with relative sea level fall. Sequence-internal onlap configurations result from contemporaneous tectonic tilting. Fourth order carbonate bank margin cycles contain well developed lowstand tracts due to increased subsidence rates. Fourth order flooding surfaces are marked by paleosoil horizons at their landward continuation.  相似文献

Two domains of carbonate deposition characterized mid-Tertiary Jamaica. After latest Cretaceous to Paleocene orogeny, submergence of insular paleo-Jamaica accompanied the strike-slip or extensional faulting associated with the formation of the Cayman Trench to the north. Differential subsidence along a series of peripheral subsea escarpments (Duanvale-Wagwater escarpment) produced relief in excess of 2000 m by the Late Eocene. Shoalwater limestones covered the slowly subsiding Cornwall-Middlesex platform, thus ending the supply of clastics to deep-sea bottoms north and east of the escarpment where contemporaneous planktonic-foraminiferal pelagites accumulated. Middle Eocene to Middle Miocene carbonate rocks deposited in the deep-sea represent a distinctive lithogenetic unit termed the Montpelier Group.A preponderance of globigerinacean and radiolarian tests characterizes lower Montpelier microfossil assemblages. Dominant benthonic forms include Melonis pompilioides, Fontbotia wuellerstorfi and species of Stilostomella and Pleurostomella. Available faunal criteria including the assemblage composition, depth preferences of extant species and recurrent morphologic-ecologic patterns suggest abyssal (2000 m) paleo-depths at the site of accumulation on a sediment apron near the base of the Duanvale-Wagwater escarpment. Computed from inferred paleodepth and estimated sedimentary thickness, Middle Eocene to Lower Miocene subsidence totals 2800 m. Biostratigraphic and paleoecologic data do not support the prevalent concept of a regional unconformity within the Montpelier. In the Middle Miocene, regional uplift led to the emergence of the Cornwall-Middlesex platform and to pronounced shoaling of marginal sea bottoms. Here, hemipelagic sedimentation resumed during the later Middle Miocene after the carbonate veneer on the adjacent platform was sufficiently eroded so as to expose noncarbonate rocks. See NAPS document No. 02395 for 67 pages of faunal reference lists, maps of sample locations and tables of foraminiferal occurrences.
