Detailed quantitative comparisons confirm and extend the discrimination of four major morphotypes amongst brackens of Laurasian affinity in Central and North America. These are recognized here at subspecies level as: Pteridium aquilinum sspp. feei , pubescens , latiusculum , and pseudocaudatum . Measurements of spore size indicate that sporophytes of P. aquilinum ssp. feei are diploid (2 n  = 104), as are sspp. pubescens , latiusculum , and pseudocaudatum . Phenetic cluster analysis based on DNA fingerprinting by arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction groups these four subspecies as genomically more similar to each other than to any taxa from other geographical regions. The chloroplast haplotype of ssp. feei is the same as that of sspp. latiusculum , pseudocaudatum , and pubescens with respect to the absence of both of the short direct repeats in the rps 4– trn S region (haplotype A), whereas the European ssp. aquilinum (haplotype B) has one of these repeats, and the Southern Hemisphere brackens P. arachnoideum and P. esculentum (haplotype C) have the other.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 1–17.  相似文献

Rhododendron (Ericaceae) is a large woody genus in which hybridization may play an important role in evolution and speciation, particularly in the Sino-Himalayan region, where many interfertile species often occur sympatrically. Natural hybridization between Rhododendron delavayi Franch. (=  R. arboreum ssp. delavayi ) and Rhododendron decorum Franch., which belong to different subsections of subgenus Hymenanthes, was investigated. Material of R. delavayi and R. decorum and their putative hybrids was collected from the wild. On the basis of morphology, chloroplast DNA, nuclear ribosomal DNA, and AFLP profiles, hybrids and parental species were identified. Hybridization occurred in both directions, but was asymmetrical, with R. delavayi as the major maternal parent in the hybrid zone. Most of the hybrids possessed intermediate phenotypes, and amongst the 15 hybrids detected were six F1s, two F2s, one first-generation backcross to R. delavayi , and two first-generation backcrosses to R. decorum . This indicates that, if Rhododendron underwent rapid radiation in this region, it did so in spite of permeable species barriers.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 119–129.  相似文献

Two morphotypes of bracken fern in the genus Pteridium Gled. ex Scop. occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The more common and widespread of these is assigned in contemporary systematic treatments to the European subspecies, P. aquilinum (L.) Kuhn ssp. aquilinum . We show that this African form is separable morphometrically and genomically from the European subspecies, and reinstate its earlier name P. aquilinum ssp. capense (Thunb.) C.Chr. The second African bracken, with a more localized tropical distribution mainly in the drainage basins of the Congo and Zambezi River systems, is confirmed as P. aquilinum ssp. centrali-africanum Hieron. ex R.E. Fr. We reject suggestions that this taxon be treated as a full species. Phenetic cluster analysis based on use of Arbitrarily Primed Polymerase Chain Reaction (A-P PCR) and Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) fingerprinting of the nuclear genome provides evidence that the two African brackens are more closely related to each other than to other taxa, and sister to a grouping of the European sspp. aquilinum and pinetorum . The two African subspecies share solely with ssp. aquilinum a distinctive chloroplast haplotype carrying a 5-base direct repeat in the rps 4 –trn S region, confirming the close phyletic relationship between sspp. aquilinum , capense and centrali-africanum .  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 148 , 311–321.  相似文献

Optimal outbreeding theory predicts fitness benefits to intermediate levels of inbreeding. In the present study, we test for linear (consistent with inbreeding depression) and nonlinear (consistent with optimal outbreeding) effects of inbreeding on reproductive fitness in male and female Drosophila melanogaster . We found linear declines in fitness associated with increased inbreeding for egg-to-adult viability, but not the number of eggs laid or sperm competitive ability. Egg-to-adult viability was also lower in the progeny of inbred males and females mated to unrelated individuals. However, there was no evidence for optimal fitness at intermediate levels of inbreeding for any trait. The present study highlights the importance of considering biologically realistic levels of inbreeding and cross-generational effects when investigating the costs and benefits of mating with relatives.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 501–510.  相似文献

In this investigation, we have collected family-structured data from a partly self-compatible, outcrossing population of Brassica cretica to estimate and compare the effects of one-generation selfing on different types of characters. Inbreeding not only depressed characters that should be positively correlated with fitness irrespective of habitat, e.g. germinability, leaf number and inflorescence size, but also resulted in later flowering, smaller and more asymmetric flowers, and an increased production of basal branches. Population-level estimates of inbreeding depression were similar in magnitude to estimates reported in other wild plant species. There was a tendency for direct components of fitness to exhibit a stronger response to inbreeding than other characters, but only when the differences between selfed and outbred offspring were measured in standard deviation units. Family-level estimates of inbreeding depression were weakly correlated across characters. Given these and other observations, we hypothesize that the genetic basis of inbreeding depression varies across the life cycle and that changes in local inbreeding will lead to shifts in the mean phenotypes of B. cretica populations. However, judging from data on current levels of population divergence, quite large changes in inbreeding will be required to influence large-scale patterns of variation in this species.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London. Six new taxa of Chlorophytum (five from Zambia and one from Malawi) are described, namely C. bulbinifolium Hoell & Nordal, C. zambiense Bjorå & Nordal, C. chelindaensis Kativu & Nordal, C. clarae Bjorå & Nordal, C. blepharophyllum Schweinf. ex Baker ssp. rubropygmaeum Bjorå & Nordal, and C. blepharophyllum Schweinf. ex Baker ssp. pendulum Hoell & Nordal. The sister group relationships of the new taxa were studied by cladistic analyses of nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequences. Chlorophytum bulbinifolium has an isolated position in the cladogram. It is morphologically closest to C. subpetiolatum (Baker) Kativu, but differs by its narrow succulent leaves and smaller flowers. Chlorophytum zambiense is nested with C. andongense Baker, C. macrosporum Baker, and C. viridescens Engl., but differs by being more slender and by having ebracteate peduncles and smaller flowers. Chlorophytum chelindaensis belongs in the C. colubrinum Engl. complex, differing from C. colubrinum by its small habit and hairy leaves. Chlorophytum clarae is in a clade with C. pusillum Schweinf. ex Baker and C. pauper Poelln. It is morphologically closest to C. macrophyllum Asch., but has globose capsules and smaller irregularly folded seeds.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 223–238.  相似文献

Relations between microhabitat use and limb shape in phrynosomatid lizards   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
With the exception of the well-documented case for anoline lizards, recent studies have found few evolutionary relationships between morphology and habitat use in lizards despite clear-cut biomechanical predictions. One of the factors typically hampering these analyses is the clustering of habitat use within evolutionary lineages. In the present study, body shape was quantified for male and female lizards of 30 species of phrynosomatid lizards. This group was selected as little clustering of ecological variables seemed to be present. The results of traditional analyses indicate that evolutionary correlates of habitat use were prominent in the hindlimbs of both sexes. Species living in open habitats are characterized by longer femurs, and longer hindlimbs relative to the forelimb. Moreover, males from ground-dwelling species utilizing open habitats have longer toes on the hind foot than males from climbing species. Phylogenetic analyses indicated strong evolutionary associations between habitat use and the relative length of front and hindlimbs, with species from open terrestrial habitats having significantly shorter frontlimbs relative to their hindlimb than rock or tree climbing species. Evolutionary associations between morphology and habitat use were generally stronger for male lizards, indicating a potentially important contribution of sexual selection to the evolution of differences in limb proportions.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 149–163.  相似文献

The dynamic clonal genome and its adaptive potential   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Populations of clonal organisms are often represented as being evolutionary inert with persistent genetic fidelity. The advent of molecular methods and the corresponding increased genetic resolution of clonal populations forces a reconsideration of this viewpoint. We review molecular data from viruses, prokaryotes and eukaryotes to support the argument that clones possess a highly dynamic and adaptive genome.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79 , 193–208.  相似文献

The role of pollinators in the evolution of the African-Malagasy orchid genus Brownleea (Brownleeinae) was investigated. Taxa show specialization for pollination by bees ( B. parviflora , B. recurvata ), short-proboscid flies ( B. galpinii ), and long-proboscid flies ( B. macroceras , B. coerulea ). All species in the genus produce nectar, but some ( B. coerulea , B. galpinii ) appear to mimic flowers of abundant sympatric species as an additional strategy to attract pollinators. Species investigated in terms of their breeding systems ( B. coerulea , B. parviflora , B. macroceras , B. galpinii ) are reliant on pollinator visits for seed production. Self-pollination results in strong inbreeding depression during embryo formation. A phylogeny of the genus, constructed using data from the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region and morphology, indicates that fly pollination is likely to be basal in the genus, and that there has been a single shift to bee pollination.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 65–78.  相似文献

The Loranthaceae is the largest plant family with aerial branch parasites termed mistletoes. Three genera of Loranthaceae are terrestrial root parasites and the remaining 72 genera are aerial parasites. Several characters, including habit, haustorial type, germination pattern, pollen morphology, chromosome number, inflorescence morphology and flower merosity, fusion, symmetry and size, are considered to reflect evolutionary relationships within the family. Convergence is a common evolutionary pattern and can confound interpretations of evolution. We investigated character evolution by mapping character states onto a phylogenetic tree based on the nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL–trnF regions. Convergences in form were found in several characters, including habit, haustorial type, flower symmetry and merosity. These convergences typically correspond to ecological parameters such as pollination syndrome or stresses associated with the canopy habit. Other characters such as chromosome number and germination pattern illustrate divergent evolution among clades.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 101–113.  相似文献

The discovery of tetraploidy in the red viscacha rat, Tympanoctomys barrerae (4 n  = 102) has emphasized the evolutionary role of genome duplication in mammals. The tetraploid status of this species is corroborated here by in situ PCR and Southern blot analysis of a single-copy gene. The species meiotic configuration strongly suggests a hybrid derivation. To investigate the origin of T. barrerae further, the recently described Pipanacoctomys aureus was studied. This 92-chromosome species also has a duplicated genome size, redundant gene copy number and diploid-like meiotic pairing, consistent with an event of allotetraploidization. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial sequences indicates sister-group relationships between these two tetraploid rodents. The new karyotypic data and the phylogenetic relationships suggest the participation of the ancestral lineages of Octomys mimax in the genesis of P. aureus . The high overall DNA similarity and shared band homology revealed by genomic Southern hybridization as well as matching chromosome numbers between O. mimax and the descendant tetraploid species support the notion of introgressive hybridization between these taxa.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 443–451.  相似文献

A morphological study, both in the field and from herbarium material, showed that there are no convincing characteristics separating the Turkish endemics Iris stenophylla ssp. stenophylla and ssp. allisonii . A cytological survey revealed chromosome numbers of 2 n  = 24, 26 and 26 + 1B. No variation in either chromosome number or karyotype was found in ssp. allisonii , which always had 2 n  = 26, although the chromosome number and karyotypes of ssp. stenophylla were variable. Since neither morphological nor cytological differences were sufficient to separate the two subspecies, I. stenophylla ssp. allisonii is therefore reduced to a synonym of I. stenophylla .  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 140 , 115−127.  相似文献

Analysis of ecological characters on phylogenetic frameworks has only recently appeared in the literature, with several studies addressing patterns of niche evolution, generally over relatively recent time frames. In the present study, we examined patterns of niche evolution for a broad radiation of American blackbird species (Family Icteridae), exploring more deeply into phylogenetic history. Within each of three major blackbird lineages, overlap of ecological niches in principal components analysis transformed environmental space varied from high to none. Comparative phylogenetic analyses of ecological niche characteristics showed a general pattern of niche conservatism over evolutionary time, with differing degrees of innovation among lineages. Although blackbird niches were evolutionarily plastic over differing periods of time, they diverged within a limited set of ecological possibilities, resulting in examples of niche convergence among extant blackbird species. Hence, an understanding of the patterns of ecological niche evolution on broad phylogenetic scales sets the stage for framing questions of evolutionary causation, historical biogeography, and ancestral ecological characteristics more appropriately.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 869–878.  相似文献

Jacquemontia reclinata House (Convolvulaceae) is a federally listed endangered species endemic to coastal strand habitat of south-eastern Florida. In order to identify the closest relatives of J. reclinata , a phylogenetic reconstruction was performed based on nucleotide sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and from the trnH-psbA intergenic spacer of chloroplast DNA. The three putative relatives of J. reclinata and the majority of Jacquemontia Choicy species known to occur in the Caribbean Islands were included. The strict consensus tree concurs with previous morphological studies, indicating that J. reclinata is closely related to the Caribbean species J. cayensis Britton, J. curtisii Hallier f., and J. havanensis (Jacq.) Urb. These three species and J. reclinata form an unresolved clade. Nucleotide divergence within this clade is low, suggesting that the group is recent, perhaps diversifying after the latest glacial period. These taxa need to be studied further using population-level DNA markers. Most species endemic to the Caribbean Basin form a strongly supported clade. Our phylogeny supports Convolvulus nodiflorus Desr. as part of Jacquemontia . In addition, J. ovalifolia (West) Hallier f. ssp. sandwicensis (A. Gray) K.R. Despite strong empirical evidence of the harmful effects of inbreeding on fecundity, spontaneous recessive deleterious mutations are generally considered as acting on survival only in evolutionary models and population viability analyses. In this study, we modelled a species with separate sexes to assess the effect of selection on fecundity in small populations on the risk of extinction. We showed that the impact of inbreeding on short-term fitness changes and that population dynamics are strongly influenced by phenotypic interactions among males and females during reproduction. In particular, population persistence was found to be highly sensitive to the level at which selection acts (i.e. individual vs. pair) and to asymmetry among sexes (in terms of mutation rates and mutational effects).  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 86 , 467–476.  相似文献
