This study was conducted to determine the effects of vitamin E and selenium (Se) on lipid peroxidation (MDA), serum and liver
concentration of antioxidant vitamins, and some minerals of Japanese quails reared under heat stress (34°C). One hundred twenty
10-d-old Japanese qualis (60 males, 60 females) were randomly assigned to 4 treatment groups, 3 replicates of 10 birds each.
The experiment was designed in a 2×2 factorial arrangement using two levels of vitamin E (125 and 250 mg/kg of diet) and two
levels of selenium (0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg of diet). Greater dietary vitamin E and selenium inclusions resulted in a greater (p=0.001) serum vitamin E and vitamin A, but lower (p=0.001) MDA concentrations. Liver vitamin E and vitamin A concentrations increased (p=0.001) and MDA concentrations decreased (p=0.001) when both dietary vitamin E and selenium increased. No interactions between vitamin E and selenium were detected (p≥0.11) for any parameters. Increasing both dietary vitamin E and selenium caused an increase in serum concentrations of Fe
and Zn (p=0.001), but a decrease in serum concentration of Cu (p=0.001). Results of the present study showed that dietary vitamin E and selenium have synergistic effects and that supplementing
a combination of dietary vitamin E (250 mg/kg of diet) and selenium (0.2 mg/kg of diet) offers a good management practice

Chromium picolinate is used in the poultry diet because of its antistress effects in addition to the fact that the requirement
for it is increased during stress. This study was conducted to determine if the negative effects of high ambient temperature
(34°C) on egg production, egg quality, antioxidant status, and cholesterol and mineral content of egg yolk could be alleviated
by combination of chromium picolinate and biotin (0.6/2.0; Diachrome™, as formulated by Nutrition 21 Inc.), in laying Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japanica), Quails (n=240; 50 d old) were divided into 8 groups, 30 birds per group. The quails were fed either a basal diet or the basal diet
supplemented with 2, 4, or 8 mg of Diachrome/kg diet. Birds were kept at 22°C and 53% relative humidity (RH). At 14 wk of
age, the thermoneutral (TN) group remained in the same temperature as at the beginning of experiment, whereas the heat stress
(HS) group was kept in an environment-controlled room (34°C and 41% RH) for 3 wk. Heat exposure decreased performance when
the basal diet was fed (p=0.001). Diachrome supplementation at 4 and 8 mg/kg diet, increased feed intake (p=0.05), egg production (p=0.05), feed efficiency (p=0.01), egg weight (p=0.05), and Haugh unit (p=0.01) in quails reared under heat stress conditions. Heat exposure increased concentrations of serum malondialdehyde (MDA)
(p=0.001), glucose, and cholesterol (p=0.01), which were elevated by supplemental Diachrome (p≤0.05). Egg yolk Cr, Zn, and Fe (p=0.01) concentrations increased linearly, whereas MDA and cholesterol concentrations decreased (p=0.05) as dietary Diachrome supplementation increased in HS groups. Similar effects of supplementation on serum levels of
glucose and cholesterol (p=0.05) and egg yolk concentrations of cholesterol (p=0.05) and Cr (p=0.01) were observed in TN groups. No significant differences in other values were observed in the TN groups. Results of the

An experiment was conducted to determine if vitamin E (α-tocopherol acetate) and chromium (chromium picolinate, Cr Pic) supplementation attenuate the negative effects of cold stress on egg production, egg quality, serum metabolites, and antioxidant status in Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). One hundred and fifty laying Japanese quails (50-day-old) were divided into five groups, 30 birds per group. The laying quails kept at 6°C for 12 h/d (08.00 p.m. to 08.00 a.m.) were fed either a basal diet (low temperature-basal diet, CS group) or the basal diet supplemented with either 400 μg of Cr/kg of diet (Cr group), 250 mg of α-tocopherol-acetate per kg of diet (Vit. E group) or 400 μg of Cr plus 250 mg of α-tocopherol-acetate per kg of diet (Vit. E + Cr group) while quails kept at 18°C were fed a basal diet (thermo-neutral-basal diet, TN group). Performance and egg quality were significantly reduced in CS group compared with TN group. Supplemental chromium and vitamin E significantly increased live weight change, egg production, and improved feed efficiency in cold-stressed laying hens compared with the group fed the basal diet at 6°C. Egg production and egg weight were also greater (P < 0.05) in each supplemental group compared with the CS group. However, a combination of vitamin E and chromium, rather than each separately, provided the greatest performance. Supplemental vitamin E and chromium also increased serum vitamin C and E but, decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations (P < 0.05); the combination of vitamin E and chromium resulted in the highest levels of serum vitamin C and E within the cold-stressed quails. Results of the present study indicate that combined antioxidant supplements increased performance, egg quality and serum antioxidant levels while lowering MDA in cold-stressed quails. 相似文献

The present study was carried out to determine the effects of different sources of selenium (Se; sodium selenite [Na2SeO3] or selenomethionine [Se-Met]) supplementation on egg production, egg quality, levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), and Se in
serum and egg yolk in heat-stressed Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The birds (n = 360; 55 days old) were randomly assigned to 12 treatment groups consisting of six replicates of five birds each in a 2 × 2 × 3
factorial arrangement of treatments (temperatures, selenium sources, selenium levels). Birds were kept in wire cages in a
temperature-controlled room at either 22 (thermoneutral) or 34°C (heat stress) for 8 h/day (09:00–17:00; till the end of study)
and fed a basal (control) diet or the basal diet supplemented with either 0.15 or 0.30 mg of Na2SeO3 or selenomethionine/kg of diet. Heat exposure decreased live weight, feed intake, feed efficiency, egg production, and egg
quality when basal diet was fed (P < 0.0001). A linear increase in feed intake (P = 0.001) and body weight (P = 0.001), egg production (P = 0.001), and improvement in feed efficiency (P = 0.001) and egg quality (P = 0.001) were found in Se-supplemented quail reared under heat stress conditions. Serum, egg white, and egg yolk Se (P ≤ 0.001) concentrations increased linearly, whereas serum, liver, and egg yolk MDA concentrations decreased linearly (P = 0.001) as dietary Na2SeO3 or Se-Met supplementation increased. An interaction between dietary Se sources, temperature, and levels of supplementation
(P ≤ 0.05) for these parameters was detected. Supplementation with Se improved egg production, egg quality, and antioxidant
status of birds, and the effects of Se-Met were relatively greater than Na2SeO3 in heat-stressed quail. Results of the present study suggest that supplementation with Se-Met can be considered to be more

Environmental stress causes adverse effects in performance and antioxidant status of poultry. Dietary chromium supplementation
promotes the growth rate and feed efficiency of growing poultry and these beneficial effects of chromium appear to be greater
under stress. Biotin, a member of the vitamin B complex, is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
In a previous experiment, we examined the effects of chromium picolinate (CrPic) as a chromium source in birds subjected to
high environmental temperature and the data showed that supplementation with CrPic ameliorated the deletorious effect of stress.

1, 2 or 4 mg of Diachrome/kg of diet. Heat exposure decreased performance when the basal diet was fed (p=0.001). Diachrome supplementation increased feed intake (p=0.001), body weight (p=0.05), feed efficiency (p=0.01), and carcass traits (p≤0.05) variables linearly in birds reared under HS conditions. Serum vitamin C (p=0.05) and vitamin E (p=0.03) concentrations increased, whereas malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in serum and the liver (p=0.01), thigh muscle (p=0.05), and serum cholesterol and glucose concentrations (p=0.05) decreased in supplemented birds reared at a high temperature. It should be noted that when birds were kept at the thermo-neutral
temperature, Diachrome supplementation did not affect (p>0.05) the variables measured, with the exception of a reduction in serum cholesterol and glucose. Results of the present
study suggest that Diachrome can be considered a protective dietary supplement by reducing the negative effects of high environment

The aim of the study was to contribute to the discussion of overdosing vitamin E in laying hens. A total of 45 laying hens, divided into 5 groups were fed diets supplemented with either 0; 100; 1000; 10 000 or 20 000 mg dl‐α‐tocopheryl acetate/kg diet over a period of 10 weeks. Concentrations of vitamins A and E were measured in plasma, various tissues and egg yolk. Furthermore egg yolk colour and some carotinoids were measured in egg yolks. None of the vitamin E doses significantly influenced performance of the hens. As expected, vitamin E concentration in plasma, all tissue samples and egg yolk was significantly increased with increasing tocopherol content in the diet. The egg yolk showed the highest vitamin E concentration, followed by liver and muscles. Feeding 1000 mg α‐tocopheryl acetate per kg diet resulted in an increase of vitamin A concentration in the liver. Very high doses (10 000 and 20 000 mg/kg diet) significantly decreased retinol concentration in the liver and egg yolk, as well as carotinoid concentration in the egg yolk. The lower carotinoid concentration in egg yolk resulted in a decreased intensity of egg yolk colour. A prooxidative and/or competitive effect of very high doses of vitamin E with other fat soluble substances has been discussed. 相似文献

Genistein, a phytoestrogen found in soybeans, is a powerful antioxidant. We evaluated the effects of genistein supplementation on performance, carcass characteristics, levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), homocysteine, vitamins C, E, A in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) exposed to high ambient temperature of 34°C. Two hundred and forty Japanese quails (10 d old) were randomly assigned to eight treatment groups consisting of 10 replicates of three birds. The birds were kept in an environmental controlled room either for 24 h/d at 22°C with (thermoneutral, TN groups) or for 16 h/d at 22°C and for 8 h/d (09.00 am to 05.00 pm) at 34°C (heat stress, HS groups). Birds were fed either a basal (control) diet (TN and HS) or the basal diet supplemented with 200, 400 or 800 mg of genistein per kg of diet. Heat exposure decreased birds' performance when basal diet was fed. Increase in feed intake and body weight, and improvement of feed efficiency and carcass traits were found in genistein-supplemented quails reared under heat stress conditions. Growth rate and feed efficiency improved in quails reared under thermo-neutral conditions as well. Concentration of serum vitamins C, E, and A increased in supplemented birds reared at high temperature, while non-significant changes occurred in TN groups. With genistein supplementation homocysteine levels in serum and MDA levels in serum and liver decreased in all birds of both TN and HS groups. Effects of genistein were relatively greater in heat-stressed quails than in quails kept under thermo-neutral conditions. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Se from hydroponically produced Se-enriched kale sprout (HPSeKS) on productive performance, egg quality, and Se concentrations in egg and tissue of laying quails. Two-hundred quails, 63 days of age, were divided into four groups. Each group consisted of five replicates and each replicate had ten birds, according to a completely randomized design. The experiment lasted for 6 weeks. The dietary treatments were T1 (control diet), T2 (control diet plus 0.2 mg Se/kg from sodium selenite), T3 (control diet plus 0.2 mg Se/kg from Se-enriched yeast), T4 (control diet plus 0.2 mg Se/kg from HPSeKS). The findings revealed that productive performance and egg quality of quails were not altered (p?>?0.05) by Se sources. Whole egg Se concentrations of quails fed Se from HPSeKS and Se-enriched yeast were higher (p?<?0.05) than that of quails fed the control diet. Breast muscle Se concentrations in quails fed Se from HPSeKS were higher (p?<?0.05) than that of quails fed Se from sodium selenite and Se-enriched yeast. Heart tissue Se concentrations of quails fed Se from Se-enriched yeast and HPSeKS were similar (p?>?0.05), but higher (p?<?0.05) than that of quails fed Se from sodium selenite. The results reveal that Se from HPSeKS did not change the performance and egg quality of quails. The study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary maternal selenomethionine or sodium selenite supplementation
on performance and selenium status of broiler breeders and their next generation. Two hundred and forty 39-week-old Lingnan
yellow broiler breeders were allocated randomly into two treatments, each of which included three replicates of 40 birds.
Pretreatment period was 2 weeks, and the experiment lasted 8 weeks. The groups were fed the same basal diet supplemented with
0.30 mg selenium/kg of sodium selenite or selenomethionine. After incubation, 180 chicks from the same parental treatment
group were randomly divided into three replicates, with 60 birds per replicate. All the offspring were fed the same diet containing
0.04 mg selenium/kg, and the experiment also lasted 8 weeks. Birth rate was greater (p < 0.05) in hens fed with selenomethionine than that in hens fed with sodium selenite. The selenium concentration in serum,
liver, kidney, and breast muscle of broiler breeders, selenium deposition in the yolk, and albumen and tissues' (liver, kidney,
breast muscle) selenium concentrations of 1-day-old chicks were significantly (p < 0.01) increased by maternal selenomethionine supplementation compared with maternal sodium selenite supplementation. The
antioxidant status of 1-day-old chicks was greatly improved by maternal selenomethionine intake in comparison with maternal
sodium selenite intake and was evidenced by the increased glutathione peroxidase activity in breast muscle (p < 0.05), superoxide dismutase activity in breast muscle and kidney (p < 0.05), glutathione concentration in kidney (p < 0.01), total antioxidant capability in breast muscle and liver (p < 0.05), and decreased malondialdehyde concentration in liver and pancreas (p < 0.05) of 1-day-old chicks. Feed utilization was better (p < 0.05), and mortality was lower (p < 0.05) in the progeny from hens fed with selenomethionine throughout the 8-week growing period compared with those from
hens fed with sodium selenite. In summary, we concluded that maternal selenomethionine supplementation increased birth rate
and Se deposition in serum and tissues of broiler breeders as well as in egg yolk and egg albumen more than maternal sodium
selenite supplementation. Furthermore, maternal selenomethionine intake was also superior to maternal sodium selenite intake
in improving the tissues Se deposition and antioxidant status of 1-day-old chicks and increasing the performance of the progeny

We report the effects of time of storage, temperature, and supplementation with sodium selenite- and selenium-enriched yeast
on the quality of quail eggs. For this study, 90 10-week-old female Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) with similar body size were caged individually and randomly divided into five groups of 18 quails each. One group was fed
a normal diet and served as control. A second group was supplemented with 0.2 mg/kg sodium selenite (In-Se) and three groups
supplemented with 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mg/kg of a commercially available selenium-enriched yeast (O-Se1, O-Se2, and O-Se3, respectively).
The eggs were collected at third and fourth weeks of the experiment and were stored at 4°C and 20°C for 0, 15, 30, and 45 days.
Extension of the storage time to 45 days at 20°C resulted in significant deterioration of egg quality. The albumen Haugh unit
(HU), pH, albumen index, yolk index, and egg weight loss were the most important parameters influenced by the nature of the
selenium sources, storage time, and temperature. Storage time and temperature were also significant for egg weight loss, HU,
and albumen and yolk indexes. The results show that supplementation with selenium yeast significantly affected shell weight,
shell thickness, HU, albumen index, yolk index, and pH. The HU decreased with increased storage time and temperature. Higher
levels of Se-yeast administration resulted in greater HU compared to the selenite and control groups. 相似文献

This study was conducted to examine the effects of dietary taurine supplementation on productive performance, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant status, and the gene expression of ileal nutrient transporters in laying quails reared under heat stress (HS). One hundred and eighty laying Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were fed a basal diet or basal diet supplemented with either 2.5 or 5 g of taurine per kg of diet, and reared at either 22 ± 2 °C for 24 h/d (thermoneutral, TN) or 34 ± 2 °C for 8 h/d (HS) for 12 weeks. The quails reared under HS consumed less feed, produced less egg, and had lower dry matter, organic matter and crude protein apparent digestibilities compared with the quails reared under the TN condition (P = 0.001). However, increasing taurine concentrations in the diet improved feed intake and egg production (P = 0.001), but also the apparent digestibilities (P ≤ 0.027) in quails reared under HS. The greater doses (5 g/kg) of taurine resulted in more responses. The quails reared under HS had greater serum and liver MDA concentrations (P = 0.0001) which decreased with dietary taurine supplementations, particularly greater doses. The gene expressions of ileal PEPT1, EAAT3, CAT1, CAT2, SGLT1, SGLT5, GLUT2, and GLUT5 decreased under HS conditions (P = 0.001). However, supplementing taurine, in a dose-dependent fashion, to the diet of quails reared under HS resulted in increases in the gene expressions of the transporters (P < 0.05) except for CAT1. The results of the present work showed that taurine supplementation, particularly with greater doses (5 g/kg), to the diet of laying quails kept under HS acts as alleviating negative effects of HS, resulting in improvements in productive performance and nutrient digestion, and also upregulation of ileal nutrient transporters. 相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of increasing levels of alfalfa meal in the diet of laying quails on egg production, feed consumption, feed efficiency, egg quality, egg yolk cholesterol and selected serum parameters. In this study, 192, 10-week old quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were evenly distributed to four groups with four replicates of 12 quails each. The control group was fed a basal diet containing 0% alfalfa meal and the remaining groups received 3, 6 or 9% alfalfa meal for 12 weeks. Live weight, feed consumption, and egg production were recorded and feed efficiency were calculated. Eggs were examined for interior and exterior quality and egg yolk cholesterol content. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected and sera were analysed for serum Ca, inorganic P (Pi), Mg, triglycerides and total cholesterol. Any level of alfalfa meal had no effect on live weight, egg production, feed consumption, feed efficiency, egg weight, and egg yolk index. Six percent and 9% alfalfa meal increased specific gravity of whole egg and eggshell thickness as well as serum Pi levels. Nine percent alfalfa meal reduced serum triglycerides, total cholesterol levels and egg yolk cholesterol content. The results of this experiment indicated that addition of 9% alfalfa meal into the laying quail diet may improve eggshell quality and reduced serum triglycerides and serum and egg yolk cholesterol without any adverse effect on performance. 相似文献

Genistein is a powerful antioxidant and plays a role in calcium and bone metabolism. We evaluated the efficacy of dietary supplementation with genistein on the nutrient use and mineral concentrations in tibia and serum of quails reared at high environmental temperature (34 degrees C). Two hundred and forty Japanese quails (10 days old) were randomly assigned to 8 treatment groups consisting of 10 replicates of 3 birds. The birds were kept in a temperature-controlled room at 22 degrees C (Thermoneutral, TN groups) or 34 degrees C (for 8 h/d; 09.00 am-05.00 pm; Heat stress, HS groups). Birds were fed either a basal diet (TN and HS) or the basal diet supplemented with 200, 400 or 800 mg of genistein/kg of diet. Heat exposure decreased apparent nutrient digestibility and bone mineralization when the basal diet was fed (P < 0.001). Apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM) (P < 0.05), crude protein (CP) (P < 0.05) and ash (P < 0.01) was significantly improved by genistein supplementation. However, this improvement was not in direct proportion to increased doses of supplement since there was no difference when diets included either 400 or 800 mg genistein/kg of diet (P < 0.05) in birds reared under heat stress. The amounts of Ca, P, Mg, Mn, Zn, Fe and Cu in the excreta decreased (P < 0.01), while Ca, P, Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu concentrations in tibia ash increased in quails reared under heat stress conditions (P < 0.01) with genistein supplementation. Ca and P concentrations in tibia ash were also increased in birds kept under thermoneutral conditions with genistein supplementation. Increased serum alkaline phosphatase activity (P < 0.01) was associated with increasing dietary genistein in all groups. In conclusion, genistein supplementation to the basal diet improved digestibility of CP, DM and ash and levels of Ca and P and bone mineralization in quails reared under heat stress conditions. 相似文献

Thirty eight 45-day-old Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) were divided into two groups and were fed on a corn-soya diet or the same diet supplemented with aurofusarin at the level of 26.4 mg/kg feed in the form of Fusarium graminearum culture enriched with aurofusarin. Eggs obtained after 7 weeks of feeding were incubated. Samples of quail tissues were collected at day 17 of embryonic development and from day old hatchlings. Antioxidants and malondialdehyde were analysed by HPLC-based methods. Inclusion of aurofusarin in the maternal diet was associated with decreased concentrations of alpha- and gamma-tocopherols, alpha- and gamma-tocotrienols, retinol, lutein and zeaxanthin in egg yolk. The vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols) concentration in the liver and yolk sac membrane (YSM) of the day 17 embryos and the hatchlings from aurofusarin-fed group was significantly decreased. Alpha-tocopherol concentration was also reduced in kidney, lung, heart, muscle and brain of day-old quails. In the liver of day-old quails, concentrations of lutein, zeaxanthin, retinol, retinyl linoleate, retinyl oleate, retinyl palmitate and retinyl stearate were also reduced. As a result of these diminished antioxidant concentrations, tissue susceptibility to lipid peroxidation was significantly increased. It is suggested that a compromised antioxidant system of the egg yolk and embryonic tissues could predispose quails to increased mortality at late stages of their embryonic development. 相似文献

We report the effects of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) on the quality of Japanese quail's eggs. For this study, 60 birds were
divided into 3 groups of 20 subjects each. The animals in group 1 received 4 mg Zn/d, whereas those in group 2 were given
a combination of 4 mg Zn/d and 0.12 mg Cd/d. The quails in group 3 were not given any supplements, acting as controls. The
distribution of Cd and Zn in the eggs, the eggs' mass, and the strength and thickness of the shells were determined after
35 and 58 d of supplementation. Zinc showed a positive effect on the mass of eggs and accumulated mainly in the egg white.
The content of Cd was significantly lower in the egg yolk of birds in group 1 (p<0.001), whereas those in group 2 had decreased eggshell thickness and strength in comparison to groups 1 and 3 (p<0.001). These results suggest that the adverse effects of Cd on the quality parameters of eggs from commercially important

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of cadmium supplementation (0, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg/kg) in the diet on performance, egg quality, tibia biomechanical properties and eggshell and bone mineral contents in laying quails. In this 10-week trial, a total of 96 laying quails, aged 21 weeks, were randomly distributed among six experimental groups. Each experimental group contained four replicates of four birds each. The performance parameters were adversely affected quadratically when cadmium was added to the diets in the concentrations of 20 mg/kg and above (P<0.01). The specific gravity and eggshell weight were maximal with the addition of 20 mg/kg cadmium to the diet. The biomechanical properties of the tibia were negatively affected by cadmium supplementation in quails (P<0.05). The eggshell boron content decreased linearly (P<0.001) with cadmium supplementation to the diet. The cadmium content in bone increased when cadmium was added to the diets (P<0.001). The aim of this investigation was to determine levels of liver vitamins A and E and blood biochemical and hematological parameters
in the enflurane anesthesia of rats. Fifty adult male Wistar rats were used in this study. All rats were randomly divided
into five groups. The first and second groups were used as the control and anesthesia control groups, respectively, and only
the placebo was intraperitoneally injected. The third group was intraperitoneally administered with vitamin E (dl/-α-tocopheryl
acetate, 100 mg/kg body weight), the fourth group with Se (Na2SeO3 1.5 mg/kg body weight), and the fifth group with vitamin E and Se (dl-α-tocopheryl acetate, 100 mg/kg body weight + Na2SeO3 1.5 mg/kg body weight). This administration was done for three times with overday intervals and the second, third, forth,
and fifth group rats were taken to enflurane anesthetise for 2 h.
The liver vitamin E level was slightly lower in the anesthesia control group than in control group. However, the liver vitamin
E content was significantly (p < 0.05 andp < 0.01) increased in vitamin E, Se, and combination groups, whereas the vitamin A level in liver was not statistically different.
In general, plasma levels of alanine aminotransferase, creatin kinase, total bilirubin, urea, red blood cell counts, packet
cell volume, and hemoglobulin values were significantly (p < 0.05 andp < 0.001) increased during the anesthesia and returned to near control values after the vitamin E plus selenium injection.
However, administration of vitamin E had less effect on the hematological and biochemical parameters compared to that of selenium
and their combination with vitamin E. However, the white blood cell count and levels of alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase,
total cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein, and creatinine were not statistically influenced by the anesthesia.
In conclusion, we observed that plasma levels of some enzymes and metabolites were significantly increased in the enflurane
anesthesia of rats, whereas the liver vitamin E levels were slightly decreased. Therefore, we observed that vitamin E and
selenium have a protective effect against anesthesia complication, but the effect of selenium appears to be much greater than

Melatonin, the major pineal hormone, modulates growth in poultry by influencing hormones involved in growth. We investigated
the effects of dietary melatonin supplementation on performance, carcass characteristics, and excretion of nitrogen and some
minerals in broiler Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) exposed to high-ambient-temperature stress (34°C). One hundred twenty Japanese quails (10 d old) were randomly assigned to
4 treatment groups, 3 replicates of 10 birds each. The birds were kept in either an environment-controlled room at a constant
22°C or were kept at 22°C for 16 h/d and at 34°C for 8 h/d (9:00 am to 5:00 pm). At both temperatures birds were fed either a basal diet or the basal diet supplemented with 40 mg of melatonin per kilogram
of diet. The experiment lasted for 32 d. Melatonin improved feed efficiency in both temperatures groups compared with their
corresponding controls. Although feed intake was similar in all groups, the improvement in feed efficiency was more noticable
in melatonin-fed quails kept at high temperature (p<0.01). Supplemental melatonin significantly increased live weight gain and carcass characteristics under stress conditions
(p<0.01) but did not show the same effect at thermoneutral conditions (p>0.05). Heat exposure increased excretion of N, Ca, P, Zn, Fe, and Cr and decreased retention rates for them. Dietary melatonin
supplementation returned these values to normal (p<0.01). No interactions between melatonin and temperature were found in the parameters measured. The results of the study
show that melatonin supplementation attenuated the retardation in performance as well as the excretion of minerals caused
by heat stress in broiler quails. Our data suggest that melatonin might offer protection against heat-stress-related depression

Heat stress is one of the major causes of a decreased performance of laying quail in tropical and subtropical countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of temperature humidity index (THI) on fertility aspects, external and internal egg quality parameters in Japanese quail. One hundred and forty four (144) Japanese quail, 12 of weeks age, were used. Birds were divided randomly into three equal groups, control (at low THI, lower than 70), H1 (at moderate THI, 70–75) and H2 (at high THI, 76–80). Quail in the control and H1 groups had significant greater fertility (p=0.021) and hatchability % (p=0.037), compared with H2 group. Quail in the control group (at low THI) laid heavier egg weight with a higher external (egg weight (p=0.03), shell thickness, shell weight, eggshell ratio and eggshell density (p=0.001)) and internal egg quality score (albumin weight (p=0.026), yolk height (p=0.003), yolk index (p=0.039) and Haugh unit (p=0.001)). Otherwise, such quality traits were compromised in heat-stressed quail. At the high THI level, egg weight had a significant positive correlation with albumin weight (r=0.58, p<0.01), yolk weight (r=0.22, p<0.05), albumen ratio (r=0.17, p<0.05), yolk height (r=0.14, p<0.05) and yolk index (r=0.18, p<0.05), but was negatively correlated with yolk ratio (r=−0.15, p<0.05). Japanese quail exposed to heat stress (THI over 75) revealed drop in fertility indices and egg quality traits, indicating a detrimental policy of economic income. 相似文献
