Relatively low winter precipitation (e.g., 18–28 cm from October to May compared to 45 to 65 cm) caused reduced growth of the arroyo willow,Salix lasiolepis, with number of shoots per stem initiated and shoot length reduced. Resources were reduced for the stem-galling sawfly,Euura lasiolepis, which declined in numbers after the relatively dry winter of 1980–81. Sawfly phenology was advanced relative to willow phenology in the 1981 generation, causing an additional reduction in resource availability. These direct effects of precipitation on the sawfly were increased by indirect effects on survivorship of the 1981 generation. Egg death in galls increased on water-stressed willow plants, forming the major mortality in the generation. This resulted in very low survival in the generation and an even lower population in the 1982 generation, even though resources recovered after high precipitation during the 1981–82 winter (46.7 cm). An experiment using high, medium, and low water treatments on potted willow plants demonstrated that the effects on willows and sawflies could be reproduced using only water as a variable.  相似文献

Summary We tested predictions of sex allocation theory with a series of field experiments on sex allocation in an herbivorous, haplodiploid, sawfly, Euura lasiolepis. Our experiments demonstrated the following points. 1) Adult females allocated progeny sex in response to plant growth. 2) Population sex ratios varied in response to plant quality, being male-biased where plant growth was slow and female-biased where plant growth was rapid. 3) Family sex ratios varied in response to plant quality, being male-biased on slow-growing plants and female-biased on rapidly-growing plants. 4) Female fitness increased more rapidly as the result of developing on more rapidly-growing plants than male mass. We conclude from these results that there are unequal returns on investment in male and female progeny. This results in facultatively biased sawfly sex ratios as an adaptive response to variation in plant quality.  相似文献

The association between host-plant mineral nutrients and insect herbivory is complex, idiosyncratic, and dynamic. Because of this we employed an unusual statistical method to evaluate the relationship between tenthredinid sawfly herbivory and concentrations of foliar nutrients in arroyo willow,Salix lasiolepis. We discovered that among 20 willow clones and between two years arroyo willow varied in the size (absolute concentrations) and shape (relative concentrations) of five mineral nutrients (Ca, Mg, N, P, and K). Similarly, the densities of five sawfly species varied in size and shape among clones and between years. In 1984, relative densities, or shape, of the sawfly community was associated with relative concentrations, or shape, of foliar nutrients in 20 willow clones. In contrast, in 1985 absolute densities, or size, was associated with absolute concentrations, or size, of foliar nutrients. This shift from a shape to a size association between herbivory and foliar mineral nutrients may reflect the large difference in winter precipitation and sawfly densities between years: precipitation and sawfly densities were much greater in 1985 than in 1984.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between variation in age and shoot characteristics of the host plant Salix exigua Nuttall (coyote or sandbar willow) and the attack and survival of Euura sp. (an unnamed leaf-midrib galling sawfly). Variation in shoot characteristics resulted from reduced growth as willow ramets aged. Mean shoot length per ramet and mean longest leaf length per shoot decreased by 95% and 50% respectively between 1- and 9-year-old willow ramets. All measured shoot characteristics-shoot length, longest leaf length, number of leaves per shoot, and mean internode length-were significantly negatively correlated with ramet age (r 2 ranged from –0.23 to –0.41). Correlations between shoot characteristics were highly positive, indicating that plants also grew in a strongly integrated fashion (r 2 ranged from 0.54 to 0.85). Four hypotheses were examined to explain sawfly attack patterns. The host-plant hypothesis was supported in explaining enhanced larval sawfly survival through reduced plant resistance. As willow ramets aged, the probability of Euura sp. attack decreased over 10-fold, from 0.315 on 1-year-old ramets to 0.024 on 2- to 9-year-old ramets. As shoot length increased, the probability of sawfly attack increased over 100-fold, from 0.007 on shoots <100 mm, to 0.800 on shoots in the 1001–1100 mm shoot length class. These attack patterns occurred even though 1-year-old ramets and shoots >500 mm each represented less than 2% of the total shoots available for oviposition. Host plant induced mortality of the egg/early instar stage decreased by 50% on longer leaves and was the most important factor determining survival differences between vigorous and non-vigorous hosts. Sawfly attack was not determined by the resource distribution hypothesis. Although shoots <200 mm contained 82% of the total leaves available, they contained only 43% of the galls initiated. The attack pattern also was not explained by the gall volume hypothesis. Although gall volume increased on longer shoots, there was no significant variation in mid or late instar mortality over shoot length, as would be expected if food resources within smaller galls were limited. The natural enemy attack hypothesis could not explain the pattern of oviposition since predation was greater on longer shoots and leaves. In addition, larval survival was related to oviposition behavior. Due to a 69% reduction in late instar death and an 83% reduction in parasitism, survival of progeny in galls initiated close to the petiole base was 2.8 times greater than in galls initiated near the leaf tip. A 75% reduction in gall volume over this range of gall positions may account for the observed increases in late instar mortality and parasitism.  相似文献

The stem-galling sawfly Euura lasiolepisuses one or more plant wound compounds resulting from oviposition scars as cues in host discrimination (avoiding sites occupied by conspecifics). Four experiments were conducted to test hypotheses about how Euurapartitions resources. Experiment 1 demonstrated that Euuraavoids ovipositing on nodes with scars from previous ovipositions. Experiment 2 showed no evidence that the sawfly uses oviposition-deterring pheromones and indicated there is a time lag following oviposition before the oviposition scar becomes a deterrent. Experiment 3 showed that sawflies avoid artificially formed scars, demonstrating that a plant cue alone can lead to host discrimination. Experiment 4 showed that visual or tactile cues are not necessary for host discrimination and indicated that a plant wound compound functions as an oviposition deterrent. Both experimental results and field surveys showed that Euuraoviposition scars were more uniformly distributed than expected if sawflies were ignoring previous ovipositions.  相似文献

Partial rootzone drying (PRD) is widely investigated as an effective irrigation technique, resulting in higher water use efficiency and yield for plants growing under mild water deficit. Nutrition is another important factor affecting plant yield, but nutrient acquisition has only rarely been considered in conjunction with PRD. Here we investigate the interaction between water and fertilizer supply in a pot experiment with oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). Eight treatments were set up for the experiment, a factorial combination of four watering regimes (100% control watering at both sides of the plants; 50% control watering at both sides of the plants; 50% fixed watering applied only to one side of the plants; 50% alternate watering applied alternately to both sides of the plant) and two fertilizer placement levels (uniform over the entire pot, and patchy supplied to one side). For the 50% watering treatments, the total amount of water supplied to the plants was the same, only the pattern of application differed between treatments. Also the total fertilizer applied was the same for all treatments. Oilseed rape roots foraged effectively for water and nutrients resulting in relatively small differences in nutrient uptake and above-ground growth among the water-deficit treatments. Placing fertilizer at one side of the plants increased nutrient uptake, but there were differences between the water treatments and interactions with water uptake. Alternate watering resulted in the highest growth, as a result of the largest nitrogen and phosphorus uptake with the smallest root investment among the three water deficit treatments. Fixed watering resulted in poorest performance when fertilizer was uniformly spread throughout the pot, because the plants were unable to acquire the nutrients on the dry side. Our results show that PRD can be well combined with patchy fertilizer supply, but that reduced nutrient uptake may be expected when nutrients are supplied in parts of the soil volume that remain too dry. A study was conducted to examine nursery protocols for production of planting stocks used in wetland mitigation projects. Two commercial soil mixtures were tested along with waterlogging, fertilization, and combination treatments. Two marsh species, Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia, were subjected to a two‐phase study. During Phase I, watering and fertilization treatments were applied in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design with two soils, two watering regimes, and two fertilizer treatments. In Phase II, all plants were subjected to continuous waterlogging (no fertilizer). Soil redox potential was measured, along with plant gas exchange and growth responses. Our data do not support the hypothesis that flood “pre‐conditioning” alone can significantly improve plant growth under subsequent flooding. However, fertilization alone or in combination with flooding appeared to enhance shoot and root production in both species during the subsequent flooding. In contrast, flooding alone produced Panicum plants that appeared to remain somewhat susceptible to subsequent flooding as compared to fertilized plants. Sagittaria plants subjected to fertilizer treatment alone did not produce significantly greater total dry weights compared to their controls. Our data indicate that the growth of planting stocks for wetland mitigation can be improved by fertilization in the nursery. Hybridisation between certain willow species is a common feature leading to novel genotypes varying in growth rate and stress tolerance. The objective of this 4-week study was to investigate the effects of decreased watering, enhanced ultraviolet-B irradiation (UV-BBE, 280–315 nm, 7.2 kJ m−2 day−1) and combined decreased watering and enhanced UV-B irradiation on di- and polyamines in the leaves of Salix myrsinifolia and its hybrid with S. myrsinites. Control plantlets were well-watered and exposed to ambient UV-B irradiation (UV-BBE, 3.6 kJ m−2 day−1). HPLC analyses showed that the constitutive concentrations of soluble di- and polyamines varied markedly between S. myrsinifolia and its hybrids. The degree of responses to treatments also varied: in S. myrsinifolia, concentrations of free putrescine were clearly increased by reduced watering, while in the hybrid willow, change in putrescine was less pronounced and not significant. Results also showed that the increase in putrescine in S. myrsinifolia by reduced watering was mitigated by concurrent enhancement of UV-B irradiation. 为探明种植翻压山黧豆绿肥与减施氮肥下的水稻生产潜力,通过3年田间定位试验,设置冬闲+不施肥(NF)、山黧豆绿肥(GM)、冬闲+常规氮肥(100%N,CK)、山黧豆绿肥+80%常规氮肥(GM+80%N)、山黧豆绿肥+70%常规氮肥(GM+70%N)、山黧豆绿肥+60%常规氮肥(GM+60%N)6个处理,研究不同处理对水稻生长、养分吸收及产量的影响。结果表明:(1)与CK相比,翻压山黧豆绿肥并减施氮肥处理均能够显著提升水稻株高、增加水稻分蘖数、提高水稻干物质积累量,其中以GM+70%N施肥处理提升效果最为明显。(2)GM+70%N施肥处理下,不同生育时期水稻株高、有效分蘖数分别较对照常规施肥(100%N)提升了13.32%~ 15.73%和33.98%~59.47%,水稻干物质积累量提高了23.19%~144.18%,且随着生育时期的推进增加速率依次降低。(3)种植翻压山黧豆绿肥并减施氮肥处理下水稻产量均有所提高,其中GM+70%N和GM+80%N处理显著提高,增产分别达13.84%,7.25%,且GM+70%N处理下水稻植株和籽粒养分吸收更为全面。研究发现,种植翻压山黧豆并适量减施氮肥能有效促进水稻生长和养分的吸收积累,显著提高水稻产量,说明翻压山黧豆绿肥可替代稻田30%~40%的氮肥施入量,并可在避免水稻旺长的同时实现水稻高产,是四川水稻种植较好的耕作措施。  相似文献

Summary We use Wiens' (1984) nonequilibrium-equilibrium continuum concept to evaluate aspects of community structure for sawfly herbivores (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) that attack arroyo willow, Salix lasiolepis. The sawfly community on arroyo willow shares many characteristics of nonequilibrium communities: unsaturation, biotic decoupling, lack of density dependence, and loose emergent patterns. Species abundances exhibit highly significant differences among clones (P<0.001) and among years (P<0.001) and exhibit significant and complex clone-by-year interactions both for absolute and relative abundances. Organizing forces, such as interspecific competition and regulation by natural enemies, are largely absent from the arroyo willow system. Sawfly densities exhibit significant positive covariation among willow clones and appear to be affected by largely stochastic abiotic forces, primarily winter precipitation.  相似文献

Assessments of potential impacts of global climate change often focus exclusively on plants; however, as the base of most food webs, plants generally experience abiotic stresses concomitantly with biotic stresses. Longleaf plantain, Plantago lanceolata L., is a cosmopolitan temperate perennial weed that experiences a wide range of environmental conditions throughout its range. We examined the impacts of elevated levels of exposure to shortwave (UV-B) radiation on this plant, on two herbivores associated with this plant, and on the plant-herbivore interaction. Plantains were grown at 6 and 12 kJ m–2 d–1 BE300 UV-B radiation and concentrations of iridoid glycosides (aucubin and catalpol), verbascosides, and nitrogen were measured. In terms of plant impacts, we found that iridoid glycoside concentrations were unchanged by elevated UV-B radiation, whereas, in one experiment, the concentration of verbascosides in young leaves and levels of nitrogen in old leaves increased under elevated UV-B radiation. Variation in plant chemistry due to leaf age and maternal family was greater than variation due to UV-B exposure. When caterpillars were fed excised leaves from plants grown under elevated UV-B, growth and survivorship of the specialist herbivore, Precis coenia Hbn. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), were unaltered and growth of the generalist herbivore, Trichoplusia ni (Hbn.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), was accelerated. When the caterpillars were reared on potted plants at high and low levels of UV-B radiation, growth and survivorship of P. coenia were unchanged while growth of T. ni was significantly depressed by elevated UV-B. Elevated UV-B altered allocation patterns of above-ground biomass in these plants; masses of crowns and reproductive tissue were reduced. UV-B levels, however, did not affect distribution of damage to foliage inflicted by either species. In two additional experiments with artificial diet, designed to test the direct effect of UV-B radiation on caterpillars, growth and survivorship of P. coenia were unaltered while survivorship of T. ni was significantly depressed when caterpillars were exposed to elevated UV-B radiation. These studies collectively demonstrate that higher trophic level impacts of UV-B-induced changes in plants depend on the identity of the herbivore and its degree of adaptation not only to variation in hostplant quality but also variation in its light environment.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen fertilization on the phytomass production, shoot length and leaf secondary phenolics in nine Salix myrsinifolia clones was investigated. Cuttings taken from 1-year-old and 2-year-old shoot parts of field cultivated clones were grown at three concentrations of nitrogen (7, 150 and 300 ppm) in a greenhouse for one growing season. The willow clones differed significantly in phytomass yield and secondary phenolics content. Nitrogen fertilization affected significantly the growth and secondary metabolism of willow clones. In most clones, the addition of nitrogen from a sub-optimum concentration (7 ppm) to an optimum concentration (150 ppm) appeared to reduce the amounts of salicortin, chlorogenic acid and unknown salicylate and increased shoot phytomass, but a supraoptimum nitrogen concentration (300 ppm) resulted in highly variable growth and secondary phenolic responses. A significantly negative correlation between leaf phytomass and amount of total phenolics at sub-optimum and optimum N-treatments indicates trade-off between growth and secondary metabolism in willow clones at these treatments. However, the leaf phytomass:total amount of phenolics ratio varied significantly among clones, and in all clones it was not significantly lower at sub-optimum N-treatment than at optimum N-treatment.  相似文献

研究植物对水分和遮阴胁迫的响应及其生理机制对制定合理的栽培管理措施十分必要。以红景天属植物为研究对象,设置土壤含水量分别为田间持水量的80%(过湿水分)、70%(正常水分)、60%(轻度干旱)、40%(中度干旱)、20%(重度干旱)5个水分梯度;设置2个遮阴处理,以全光照(遮阴率为0)为对照、黑色遮阴网遮阴(遮阴率为85%),研究狭叶红景天生长及生理生化指标的变化特征。结果表明:在不同水分处理下,与对照相比,叶绿素含量、茎干重和茎重比(SMR)显著增加(P0.05),株高、总生物量、叶面积、叶干重、叶重比(LMR)、比叶面积(SLA)、叶面积比(LAR)和叶面积根干重比(LARMR)增加,根冠比和根重比(RMR)减少;随着干旱程度加剧,丙二醛(MDA)、脯氨酸(Pro)和可溶性糖(Ss)含量增加,超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)活性总体呈先增加后减小的趋势。在遮阴处理下,株高、SMR、SLA、LAR和LARMR显著增加(P0.05),叶绿素SPAD值和叶面积增加,总生物量、根干重、根冠比和LMR显著减少(P0.05),茎干重和叶干重减少,MDA含量显著增加,Pro含量略有下降,Ss含量减少。在水分胁迫下,狭叶红景天中度干旱时通过增加酶活性抵御伤害,重度干旱超过其阈值,SOD活性下降,植物体受到伤害,Ss可能是主要的渗透调节物质。在遮阴处理下,狭叶红景天通过增加SLA避免遮阴伤害。狭叶红景天在受到环境胁迫时会通过形态改变、调节MDA含量、抗氧化酶活性和渗透调节物质来保证自身正常的生长发育。  相似文献

A multiscale approach has lead to significant advances in the understanding of species population dynamics. The scale-dependent nature of population processes has been particularly clearly illustrated for insect herbivores. However, one of the most well-studied insect herbivores, the galling sawfly Euura lasiolepis, has to date been examined almost exclusively at fine spatial scales. The preference-performance, plant vigour and larval survival hypotheses are well supported by this species. Here, we test these hypotheses at a spatial scale larger than that previously considered, i.e. across a landscape in northern Arizona represented by an altitudinal gradient encompassing a series of drainages. We also develop a qualitative model for understanding the population dynamics of E. lasiolepis based on patterns of survival and mortality found in this study and previous ones. Gall density was highly variable across the altitudinal gradient, not explained by host plant variables, and thus a poor surrogate fot population abundance. These findings for the first time fail to support the plant vigour and preference hierarchy hypotheses for E. lasiolepis. Dispersal limitation most likely explains the lack of support for these hypotheses at this scale. By contrast, sawfly survival, gall abortion, parasitism and larval mortality were well explained by host plant quality variables and altitude. The larval survival hypothesis was well supported and is thus comparatively scale-invariant. A qualitative model developed here highlighted the importance of both willow water status and disturbance in determining host plant quality, as well as an apparent trade off between shoot length and plant moisture status in determining vital rates across the altitudinal gradient. This study thus demonstrated for the first time the scale-dependent nature of mechanisms underlying the population dynamics E. lasiolepis, and identified the interaction between parasitism and altitude as a novel mechanism underlying spatial patterns in the survival and mortality patterns of this species.  相似文献

为减少油松定植后的死亡率,在控制成本的基础上促进油松良好生长,该研究采用裂区实验设计方法,选取三个灌溉水平与三个园林废弃物有机肥施用量进行比较试验,通过测定油松树高、胸径、叶绿素及叶片养分含量指标探究灌溉和施用有机肥对油松林木生长的影响。结果表明:灌溉可以显著提高油松在胸径、树高、生理等方面的生长指标,树高和胸径在中水灌溉(A2)下的促进效果甚至高于高水灌溉(A3);试验处理1 a后,施肥对油松的生长影响显著,但三个施肥水平间的差异不显著;灌溉与施用有机肥之间不存在显著交互作用。综上可知,施肥和灌溉对油松的生长会产生显著的促进作用,从施肥和灌溉的效果并综合资源利用效率的角度考虑,少量施用有机肥,并以80 L·(10天·株·次)-1的灌水量在生长季(4月—9月)进行滴灌是较为经济、有效的油松生态林管护措施。  相似文献

Discaria americana is a xerophytic shrub which lives in symbiosis with an actinomycete of the genus Frankia. The objective of this paper was to investigate the effects of high soil Zn2+ concentrations on growth and nodulation on the association Discaria americana–Frankia with the aim of determining if this association is suitable for improving contaminated soils. Two experiments were performed in 1 dm3 pots containing soil and different Zn additions, from 0 to 2,000 mg Zn2+ kg−1 dry soil, with or without N fertilization. Zn additions strongly delayed shoot and root growth, but once growth was initiated, the biomass production of the plants supplied with moderate Zn amounts did not differ from the control plants. Zn reduced the final nodule number, but not the total nodule biomass. At the end of the experiment only the highest Zn treatments showed a lower nodule weight than the control plants, while N addition completely inhibited nodulation. It is concluded than Zn reduces the number of Frankia infections, but once the actinomycete is inside the roots, nodules can continue growing according to plant demand for N, compensating the reduced nodule number with more biomass. On the other hand, there is a toxic effect of Zn itself on plants when present in very high concentrations.  相似文献

The effects of Glomus mosseae and Paecilomyces lilacinus on Meloidogyne javanica of tomato were tested in a greenhouse experiment. Chicken layer manure was used as a carrier substrate for the inoculum of P. lilacinus. The following parameters were used: gall index, average number of galls per root system, plant height, shoot and root weights. Inoculation of tomato plants with G. mosseae did not markedly increase the growth of infected plants with M. javanica. Inoculation of plants with G. mosseae and P. lilacinus together or separately resulted in similar shoots and plant heights. The highest root development was achieved when mycorrhizal plants were inoculated with P. lilacinus to control root-knot nematode. Inoculation of tomato plants with G. mosseae suppressed gall index and the average number of galls per root system by 52% and 66%, respectively, compared with seedlings inoculated with M. javanica alone. Biological control with both G. mosseae and P. lilacinus together or separately in the presence of layer manure completely inhibited root infection with M. javanica. Mycorrhizal colonization was not affected by the layer manure treatment or by root inoculation with P. lilacinus. Addition of layer manure had a beneficial effect on plant growth and reduced M. javanica infection.  相似文献

Summary As ramets of the willow, Salix cinerea L. (Salicaceae) aged shoot length decreased in the six populations studied in S.E. Finland. Many traits correlated positively with shoot length: basal diameter, number of internodes, internode length, leaf size, and length of growing period. The bud-galling sawfly, Euura mucronata (Hartig) Man. (Churchill) (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), responded positively to shoot length or correlated traits, and negatively to ramet age in three forest populations. This herbivore attacked the most vigorous plants in a population, and numbers of attacks declined as ramets aged and senesced. The generality of this kind of herbivore response to plant quality is emphasized.  相似文献

Summary The population size of diazotrophic bacteria naturally associated with the maize rhizosphere can be affected by biotic and environmental factors. In this work we have evaluated the effect of two genotypes of maize, with and without nitrogen fertilization, on the population dynamics and distribution of diazotrophic bacteria associated with maize plants over different plant ontogenic stages. The study was carried out in a field experiment with and without nitrogen fertilization, using two maize cultivars (Santa Helena 8447 and Santa Rosa 3063) previously selected from 32 maize cultivars for the lowest and highest response to nitrogen fertilization, respectively. Microbiological and molecular approaches were used to characterize the diazotrophic bacterial population structure. Bacterial population was assessed by the most probable number using semi-solid N-free media, and by DNA isolation from soil and plant tissue followed by amplification of nifH gene fragments using nested PCR, and by RFLP analysis using the restriction endonucleases TaqI and HaeIII. The dynamics of the diazotrophic bacterial population were affected by the ontogenic stage of the maize plants, but not by the cultivar type. Roots were the preferred site of colonization, independent of cultivar type and growth stage. During the first stage of maize growth, addition of nitrogen fertilizer negatively affected the diazotrophic bacterial population.  相似文献
