The aim of the present study was to acertain the seasonal pattern of adrenomedullary hormones and of glycemia in Lissemys turtles. Both the norepinephrine and epinephrine concentrations as well as blood glucose levels varied seasonally which began to rise from February, became maximum during April-May (early summer), declined during June-September (late summer) and were extremely low subsequently (October-January). The seasonal adrenomedullary hormonal and glycemic cycles however do not coincide with the annual ovarian cycle, thereby indicating that the adrenomedullary and glycemic cycles are out of phase with the ovarian cycle in turtles. The possible mechanisms of seasonality of the adrenal medulla and glycemia are discussed.  相似文献

Aim Although satellite tracking has yielded much information regarding the migrations and habitat use of threatened marine species, relatively little has been published about the environmental niche for loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta in north‐west Atlantic waters. Location North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, USA. Methods We tracked 68 adult female turtles between 1998 and 2008, one of the largest sample sizes to date, for 372.2 ± 210.4 days (mean ± SD). Results We identified two strategies: (1) ‘seasonal’ migrations between summer and winter coastal areas (n = 47), although some turtles made oceanic excursions (n = 4) and (2) occupation of more southerly ‘year‐round’ ranges (n = 18). Seasonal turtles occupied summer home ranges of 645.1 km2 (median, n = 42; using α‐hulls) predominantly north of 35 ° latitude and winter home ranges of 339.0 km2 (n = 24) in a relatively small area on the narrow shelf off North Carolina. We tracked some of these turtles through successive summer (n = 8) and winter (n = 3) seasons, showing inter‐annual home range repeatability to within 14.5 km of summer areas and 10.3 km of winter areas. For year‐round turtles, home ranges were 1889.9 km2. Turtles should be tracked for at least 80 days to reliably estimate the home range size in seasonal habitats. The equivalent minimum duration for ‘year‐round’ turtles is more complex to derive. We define an environmental envelope of the distribution of North American loggerhead turtles: warm waters (between 18.2 and 29.2 °C) on the coastal shelf (in depths of 3.0–89.0 m). Main conclusions Our findings show that adult female loggerhead turtles show predictable, repeatable home range behaviour and do not generally leave waters of the USA, nor the continental shelf (< 200m depth). These data offer insights for future marine management, particularly if they were combined with those from the other management units in the USA.  相似文献

The aim of the current investigation was to ascertain the role of ACTH and adrenal hormones on adrenomedullary and glycemic functions in soft-shelled turtles, Lissemys punctata punctata. All the experiments were carried out on sexually immature animals. Findings revealed that: (1) ACTH administration (0.5 IU/1.0 IU/2.0 IU per 100 g body wt. daily for 10 days) in all doses stimulated adrenomedullary function by increasing medullary cell nuclear diameter with elevations of norepinephrine, epinephrine and blood sugar levels. Only moderate and higher doses (50 microg/100 microg per 100 g body wt. daily for 10 days) of dexamethasone suppressed adrenomedullary activity and blood sugar level by reversing the changes to those of ACTH; the responses were dose-dependent. But these changes were no longer observed after ACTH treatment in dexamethasone (DMS) recipients (DMS: 100 microg/ 100 g body wt daily for the first 10 days and ACTH: 0.5 IU / 100 g body wt daily for the next 10 days); (2) Only moderate and higher doses (50 microg/100 microg per 100 g body wt daily for 10 days) of corticosterone increased adrenomedullary activity and blood sugar level and the responses were also dose-dependent. But aldosterone treatment in all doses (same as for corticosterone) had no significant effect on the adrenal medulla or blood sugar level; (3) Only moderate and higher doses of norepinephrine or epinephrine (same as for corticosterone) caused adrenomedullary atrophy with depletions of norepinephrine and epinephrine levels but elevated the glycemic level. The findings are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Formosan gem‐faced civets are classified to be endemic sub‐species of Paguma larvata in Taiwan. Little about their reproductive physiology has been reported. This study was designed to characterize the ovarian activity throughout the year and define ovarian cycle length and the lengths of its component phases. Serum samples were collected for enzyme immunoassay (progesterone and estradiol) from seven captive civets twice weekly for 1 year. Meanwhile, periodic changes in external genitalia (vulva swelling) and vaginal cytology were examined and recorded. Results showed estrous cycles exhibited two types: 18‐day (18.5±1.1, n=64) and 28‐day (27.6±1.0, n=28) as shown by progesterone and estradiol fluctuations and corresponding changes in vulva morphology and vaginal cytology. Both types showed a similar 7‐day follicular phase, peaking progesterone at Day 7. The 18‐day cycle type prevails in the spring and summer whereas the 28‐day cycle type is significant in the autumn. In summary, female gem‐faced civets are polyestrous (approximately 13 cycles/year), and non‐typical seasonal breeders, with follicular phase and two distinct durations of luteal phases (diestrus) cycling throughout the year, but the frequency of ovarian cycles was remarkably gradually decreased from September to February of next year. The supratidal amphipod Talorchestia longicornis Say has a circadian rhythm in activity, in which it is active on the substrate surface at night and inactive in burrows during the day. The present study determined: (1) the circadian rhythms in individual versus groups of amphipods; (2) the range of temperature cycles that entrain the circadian rhythm; (3) entrainment by high-temperature cycles versus light?:?dark cycles, and (4) seasonal substrate temperature cycles. The circadian rhythm was determined by monitoring temporal changes in surface activity using a video system. Individual and groups of amphipods have similar circadian rhythms. Entrainment occurred only to temperature cycles that included temperatures below 20°C (10–20, 15–20, 17–19, 15–25°C) but not to temperatures above 20°C (20–25, 20–30°C), and required only a 2°C temperature cycle (17–19°C). Diel substrate temperatures were above 20°C in the summer and below 20°C during the winter. Upon simultaneous exposure to a diel high-temperature cycle (20–30°C) and a light?:?dark cycle phased differently, amphipods entrained to the light?:?dark cycle. Past studies found that a temperature cycle below 20°C overrode the light?:?dark cycle for entrainment. The functional significance of this change in entrainment cues may be that while buried during the winter, the activity rhythm remains in phase with the day?:?night cycle by the substrate temperature cycles. During the summer, T. longicornis switches to the light?:?dark cycle for entrainment, perhaps as a mechanism to phase activity precisely to the short summer nights.  相似文献

The life cycles of many marine and freshwater prawn species are closely associated with estuarine habitat. Here, the prawn community of the Mfolozi–Msunduzi estuarine system is described and the system's potential as an alternative nursery for prawns during prolonged closure of the adjacent St Lucia estuarine system is examined. Sampling was conducted at five localities in summer and winter in 2007–2012. The Mfolozi–Msunduzi Estuary is a river-dominated system with mouth condition, sediment grain size and turbidity being the most important factors affecting the structure of its prawn community. Twelve prawn species were recorded, including five marine penaeid and five freshwater palaemonid species. The prawn community was numerically dominated by freshwater Macrobrachium equidens and two penaeids, Fenneropenaeus indicus and Metapenaeus monoceros. Significant differences were recorded between summer and winter samples, with freshwater species dominating the catch in summer, while penaeid species were dominant in winter. The marked seasonal change in the prawn community was related to strong river flows during summer creating low-salinity conditions, unsuitable for penaeid postlarval development, throughout most of the system. Compared to St Lucia, the Mfolozi–Msunduzi Estuary can be regarded as a poor alternative nursery area for penaeids during the summer peak postlarval recruitment period.  相似文献

The oviduct of the Indian fresh water soft-shelled turtle Lissemys punctata punctata was examined throughout the year under light and scanning electron microscopes to determine the location, histomorphological characteristics, and function of sperm storage structure, as well as their changes at different phases of the seasonal reproductive cycle. Sperm storage structures in the form of tubules were observed in the wall of isthmus throughout the year. These tubules developed either by folding or fusion of the oviductal mucosal folds and were lined by both ciliated and nonciliated epithelial cells. The height and secretory activities of the epithelia were markedly high during the breeding phase (August to September) but low in the nonbreeding phase (October to June). A few short tubules lined by cuboidal epithelium appear in the wall of infundibulum only during the breeding phase. Following mating (May), inseminated sperm were stored within the tubules of isthmus up to the pre-ovulatory stage (August). Thereafter, sperm associated with PAS-positive materials secreted from the epithelium (referred to as a carrier matrix) moved forward to the infundibulum and were stored within the storage tubules of the infundibulum for a short time. Subsequently, sperm evacuated the storage tubules and entered the oviductal lumen to fertilize the subsequently ovulated eggs during or prior to ovulation. The isthmus-tubules become shorter and narrower in the regressive phase (October to November) and remained so until the early preparatory phase (April). Sperm release might have been stimulated by estrogen secreted from the ovarian follicles of pre-ovulatory turtles. Stored sperm not utilized for fertilization remained viable not less than six months in the present turtle species.  相似文献

The current study was undertaken to ascertain the seasonal influence of thyroid activity in female soft-shelled turtles, Lissemys p. punctata. Thyroid gland was studied month-wise throughout the year from relative gland weight, histology, epithelial height, glandular peroxidase activity, and RIA of T3 and T4 levels from blood serum and the thyroid gland. The values of all the parameters, except those of T3 and T4, were higher during March through May, decreased from June through August and began to rise thereafter (September through February). Whereas T3 and T4 levels were highest in May, lower during June to November and began to rise thereafter. The difference in the peaks between T3 and T4 levels and other parameters have been explained. The findings suggest that thyroid activity of Lissemys turtles varies seasonally and that seasonal factors like temperature play an important role in influencing thyroid activity in soft-shelled turtles.  相似文献

Although cavitation is common in plants, it is unknown whether the cavitation resistance of xylem is seasonally constant or variable. We tested the changes in cavitation resistance of Acer mono before and after a controlled cavitation–refilling and freeze–thaw cycles for a whole year. Cavitation resistance was determined from ‘vulnerability curves’ showing the percent loss of conductivity versus xylem tension. Cavitation fatigue was defined as a reduction of cavitation resistance following a cavitation–refilling cycle, whereas frost fatigue was caused by a freeze–thaw cycle. A. mono developed seasonal changes in native embolisms; values were relatively high during winter but relatively low and constant throughout the growing season. Cavitation fatigue occurred and changed seasonally during the 12‐month cycle; the greatest fatigue response occurred during summer and the weakest during winter, and the transitions occurred during spring and autumn. A. mono was highly resistant to frost damage during the relatively mild winter months; however, a quite different situation occurred during the growing season, as the seasonal trend of frost fatigue was strikingly similar to that of cavitation fatigue. Seasonality changes in cavitation resistance may be caused by seasonal changes in the mechanical properties of the pit membranes.  相似文献

Asthma is a “seasonal disease” with symptoms either aggravated by environmental changes during specific seasons or prevalent at certain times of the year for other reasons. We examined whether the heart rate variability (HRV) of asthmatic children changes by season. The HRV during a portion of one night (00:00–04:00) and day (12:00–16:00) and the entire 24h period (00:00–24:00) during each of the four seasons was analyzed. The data of 95 children with asthma and 106 healthy children, as controls, were assessed. In children with asthma during the 24h period, seasonal variation in the low-frequency (LF) band (0.04–0.15 Hz) and the high-frequency (HF) band (0.15–0.4 Hz) were detected (HF: F = 6.81, p =.0003; LF: F = 4.18, p =.008. The HF value in the summer was significantly higher than in autumn and spring (Scheffe test: autumn vs. summer, s = 4.46, p<.001; spring vs. summer, s = 2.86, p<.05), while the LF value in autumn was significantly lower than in summer (s = 3.42, p <.01). In the control group, no seasonal variation in HF, LF, or LF/HF was detected. The findings infer the HRV, a surrogate measure of autonomic nervous system function, of asthmatic children is more susceptible to seasonal changes brought about by either endogenous annual rhythms or environmental weather phenomena. The aim of the current investigation was to investigate the effect of photoperiod on thyroid activity in soft-shelled turtles (Lissemys punctata punctata). Thirty days exposure of short photoperiod with 2L:22D increased relative weight, follicular epithelial height and peroxidase activity of the thyroid gland; whereas exposure of long photoperiod with 22L:2D for 30 days showed reversed changes to those of the short photoperiod in adult female turtles. These findings indicate that short photoperiod stimulates thyroid activity and long photoperiod inhibits its activity in soft-shelled turtles. It is suggested that photoperiod exerts its action on thyroid activity presumably via gonads and/or pineal-gonadal axis in turtles.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Risk assessments can be used to identify threats, which vary both in space and time, to declining species. Just as hot spots describe locations where threat processes operate at a higher rate than in surrounding areas, hot moments refer to periods when threat rates are highest. However, the identification of hot moments can be challenging because the temporal complexity of some threat processes makes their effects on population viability difficult to predict. Declining throughout much of their range, Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) populations are potentially most vulnerable to road mortality where road densities and traffic volumes are high. The temporal variations in road-mortality risk faced by these and other semiaquatic turtles at the population level are a consequence of several factors, including sex-specific movement characteristics and seasonal changes in traffic volume. We examined these risk factors for Blanding's turtle populations in Maine, USA, by integrating temporally explicit roadkill probabilities with demographic parameters informed by local and range-wide studies. Specifically, we used population simulations to estimate the relative risk for 14 2-week periods during the turtles’ active season. Our analysis clearly identified early summer as a period of elevated risk, with June through mid-July signaling a road-mortality hot moment for Blanding's turtles (for both M and F). These findings provide guidance for the implementation of temporally explicit conservation measures such as cautionary road signage, traffic management, and public outreach that, if timed strategically, could help to mitigate population impacts from road mortality.  相似文献

Relatively little is known about the life cycles of ascidians in temperate seas. Here, we investigated the biological cycle of the colonial ascidian Didemnum fulgens, a dominant species in some shallow localities of the NW Mediterranean Sea. Growth rates and frequencies of fission/fusion events were calculated over a period of 13 months, and the reproductive cycle determined after 32 months of observation. For analyses of reproduction, zooids were dissected in the laboratory and classified into five reproductive categories; these data were used to calculate a maturity index. For growth analyses, underwater photographs of marked colonies were used to estimate the surface area of D. fulgens colonies, calculate monthly growth rates, and document fusion and fission events. Clear seasonal patterns in reproduction and growth were observed, with distinct periods of investment into each function. Gonad maturation started in winter and larval release occurred in early summer, just before maximal sea temperatures were reached. After reproducing, colonies shrank and aestivated during the warmer summer months. Growth occurred during the cooler months, with maximal and minimal growth rates observed in winter and summer, respectively. Fusions and fissions occurred year‐round, although fissions were more frequent in fall (coincident with high growth rates) and fusions in spring (coincident with reproduction). These results add to the mounting evidence that ascidian life cycles in temperate seas are characterized by a trade‐off between investment in reproduction and growth, triggered by seasonal temperature shifts and constrained by resource availability during summer.  相似文献

Seasonally-flooded wetlands occur throughout the world and provide important foraging, resting, and breeding habitat for a broad array of organisms. This review summarizes our current understanding of vertebrate community composition at seasonal forest pools in the northeastern United States. These wetlands typically have hydroperiods that range from temporarily flooded to intermittently exposed, which reduces densities of many potential predators (e.g., fish). Current research has shown that pool hydroperiod, canopy closure, vegetation structure within pools, presence of potential predators, and landscape structure surrounding pools are the key factors determining vertebrate diversity at seasonal forest pools. Of 25 species of amphibians in the region, frogs (10 of 12 species) are more likely to breed in seasonal forest pools than salamanders (6 of 13 species). Seven of 10 amphibian species that breed in seasonal forest pools are state-listed as threatened or endangered. Among 27 species of reptiles, 3 of 15 species of snakes, and 6 of 12 species of turtles utilize seasonal pools during at least one stage of their annual cycle. Seasonal forest pools are important foraging and basking habitat for three species of turtles listed as threatened or endangered. Compared to other vertebrate taxa, most species of mammals are habitat generalists, with 50 of 63 mammal species potentially foraging at seasonal pools during part of their annual cycle. Chiroptera (bats; all 9 species) are believed to actively forage at seasonal pools and some Insectivora, particularly Sorex palustris Richardson and S. fumeus (Miller) and Condylura cristata (L.), are detected regularly at seasonal pools. Breeding birds are less likely to utilize seasonal pools than other vertebrate taxa, although 92 of 233 species might forage or breed near seasonal pools. Several species of Anatidae, Rallidae, and some Passeriformes use seasonally flooded pools. All vertebrates that use seasonal forest pools use other habitats during some stage in their life cycle; thus gaining a clear understanding of their habitat requirements is critical to their long-term persistence.  相似文献

Environmental cues allow organisms to synchronise their internal biological rhythms with external environmental cycles. These rhythms are regulated on a molecular level by oscillating interactions between clock genes and their proteins. Light is a particularly relevant environmental cue, provisioning daily information via light/dark cycles as well as seasonal information via day-length (photoperiod). Despite the ecological and commercial importance of bivalves, little is known about the interactions comprising their molecular clock mechanism. This study investigates the link between the annual seasonal progression and reproductive development in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), using mRNA expression patterns of clock-associated genes: Clock, Cry1¸ ARNT, Timeout-like, ROR/HR3 and aaNAT, in the gonads of both sexes, sampled over three daily time-points on a tidal beach during the winter and summer solstices. Significant differences in mRNA expression levels, including some seasonal differences at comparable time-points, were detected for all genes with the exception of Timeout-like. These differences occurred seasonally within sex (Clock, Cry1, ROR/HR3), seasonally between sexes (Clock, Cry1, ARNT, ROR/HR3, aaNAT) and daily between sexes (Cry1), although no significant daily differences were detected in summer or winter for either sex for any of the genes. This study reveals that clock-associated genes show seasonal responses in this species of bivalve. Understanding the mechanisms by which environmental cues drive biological rhythms is critical to understanding the seasonal sensitivity of this keystone species to environmental changes.  相似文献

Nitrate (NO3) export coupled with high inorganic nitrogen (N) concentrations in Alaskan streams suggests that N cycles of permafrost‐influenced ecosystems are more open than expected for N‐limited ecosystems. We tested the hypothesis that soil thaw depth governs inorganic N retention and removal in soils due to vertical patterns in the dominant N transformation pathways. Using an in situ, push–pull method, we estimated rates of inorganic N uptake and denitrification during snow melt, summer, and autumn, as depth of soil–stream flowpaths increased in the valley bottom of an arctic and a boreal catchment. Net NO3 uptake declined sharply from snow melt to summer and decreased as a nonlinear function of thaw depth. Peak denitrification rate occurred during snow melt at the arctic site, in summer at the boreal site, and declined as a nonlinear function of thaw depth across both sites. Seasonal patterns in ammonium (NH4+) uptake were not significant, but low rates during the peak growing season suggest uptake that is balanced by mineralization. Despite rapid rates of hydrologic transport during snow melt runoff, rates of uptake and removal of inorganic N tended to exceed water residence time during snow melt, indicating potential for retention of N in valley bottom soils when flowpaths are shallow. Decreased reaction rates relative to water residence time in subsequent seasons suggest greater export of inorganic N as the soil–stream flowpath deepens due to thawing soils. Using seasonal thaw as a proxy for longer term deepening of the thaw layer caused by climate warming and permafrost degradation, these results suggest increasing potential for export of inorganic N from permafrost‐influenced soils to streams.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We performed large-scale analyses of circadian and infradian cycles of human body temperature, focusing on changes over the day, week, and year. Temperatures (n= 93,225) were collected using temporal artery thermometers from a Boston emergency department during 2009–2012 and were statistically analyzed using regression with cyclic splines. The overall mean body temperature was 36.7°C (98.1°F), with a 95% confidence interval of 36.7–36.7°C (98.1–98.1°F) and a standard deviation of 0.6°C (1.1°F). Over the day, mean body temperature followed a steady cycle, reaching its minimum at 6:00–8:00 and its maximum at 18:00–20:00. Across days of the week, this diurnal cycle was essentially unchanged, even though activities and sleeping hours change substantially during the weekly cycles of human behavior. Over the year, body temperatures were slightly colder in winter than summer (~0.2°C difference), consistent with most prior studies. We propose these seasonal differences might be due to ambient effects on body temperature that are not eliminated because they fall within the tolerance range of the thermoregulatory system. Over the year, bathyphase (daily time of minimum temperature) appeared to parallel sunrise times, as expected from sunrise’s zeitgeber role in circadian rhythms. However, orthophase (daily time of maximum temperature) and sunset times followed opposite seasonal patterns, with orthophase preceding nightfall in summer and following nightfall in winter. Throughout the year, bathyphase and orthophase remained separated by approximately 12 h, suggesting this interval might be conserved. Finally, although 37.0°C (98.6°F) is widely recognized as the mean or normal human body temperature, analysis showed mean temperature was <37.0°C during all times of day, days of the week, and seasons of the year, supporting prior arguments that the 37.0°C standard has no scientific basis. Overall, this large study showed robust and consistent behavior of the human circadian cycle at the population level, providing a strong example of circadian homeostasis.  相似文献

Prescribed fire is an increasingly important management tool for eastern deciduous forests, but relativity little is known about the direct effects of fire on the eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina). We used very high frequency (VHF) transmitters to monitor mortality, movement, and spatial ecology of 118 box turtles in response to 17 prescribed fires across 4 seasons and 3 sites in east Tennessee, USA, during 2016–2018. Annual survival of box turtles that experienced a prescribed fire event was lower (0.87 ± 0.04 [SE]) than turtles that did not (0.98 ± 0.01) and was negatively correlated with fire intensity, fire temperature the turtle experienced, and litter depth. All prescribed fire-related mortalities occurred during the early (Apr–May, n = 5) or late growing season (Sep–Oct, n = 1). Fourteen percent of box turtles we captured exhibited damage to their carapace from previous fire events. Box turtles that survived prescribed fires were in microsites that did not burn, moved to unburned areas during the fire, or burrowed following ignition. Home range size was similar before and after burns and sinuosity of movements did not differ in burned or unburned areas. Our results indicate that though box turtles are susceptible to prescribed fire during their active season, they have behavioral and physical traits that reduce the direct effects of prescribed fire. Prescribed fire practitioners should be aware of the risks of fire, particularly during the active season. We suggest managers consider altering prescribed fire intensity, seasonality, and firing pattern to minimize risk of direct effects where box turtles are of concern. © 2020 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Gabon hosts nesting grounds for several sea turtle species, including the world’s largest rookery for the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), Africa’s largest rookery for the olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) and smaller aggregations of the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas). To assess the level of incidental captures of turtles by the Gabonese trawl fishery, an onboard observer program was conducted in the period 2012–2013. A total of 143 turtles were captured by 15 trawlers during 271 fishing days. The olive ridley turtle was the main species captured (80% of bycaught turtles), with mostly adult-sized individuals. The remaining 20% included green turtles, hawksbill turtles, leatherback turtles and undetermined species. Bycatch per unit of effort (BPUE) of olive ridley turtles varied greatly depending on the period of the year (range of means: 0.261–2.270). Dead and comatose turtles were 6.2 and 24.6% respectively (n = 65). By applying the available fishing effort to two BPUE scenarios (excluding or considering a seasonal peak), the total annual number of captures was estimated as ranging between 1026 (CI 95% 746–1343) and 2581 (CI 95% 1641–3788) olive ridley turtles, with a mortality ranging from 63 (CI 95% 13–135) to 794 (CI 95% 415–1282) turtles per year depending on the scenario and on the fate of comatose turtles. Such a potential mortality may be reason for concern for the local breeding population of olive ridley turtles and recommendations in terms of possible conservation measures and further research are given.  相似文献

Freshwater turtles are important consumers in Australian freshwater ecosystems. They serve as scavengers, nutrient regulators, and as food sources and Totems for Traditional Owners throughout Australia. Despite their importance, most Australian freshwater turtle species are declining. The impact of winter wetland drying on turtle populations remains unknown, and winter exposure of hibernating turtles may be an important additional source of mortality. We aimed to examine turtle responses to seasonal and episodic wetland drying in wetlands using acoustic telemetry and active trapping. Wetlands were chosen that spanned a range of hydrological connectivity to the adjacent Edward/Kolety-Wakool River. We found that tagged Emydura macquarii typically exit wetlands disconnected from the adjacent permanent river prior to winter, and overwinter in the river. Female E. macquarii rapidly re-entered ‘home’ wetlands (wetlands in which they were initially tagged) the following spring, whereas males tended to leave the study area, returning occasionally. Although we were not able to evaluate a winter drying event, one of the wetlands experienced partial summer drying. All three local turtle species (E. macquarii, Chelodina expansa, C. longicollis) exited the wetland long before winter drying would have become a potential threat. Our results suggest that turtles in this system may be protected from winter wetland drying because they move to the adjacent permanent river prior to winter. Spending the winter in the river channel reduces the risks of being trapped in a drying wetland as temperatures drop in winter.  相似文献
