As a consequence of the combined effects of prey patchinessand diel or tidal vertical migrations in the water column, decapodcrustacean larvae may experience temporal or spatial variabilityin the availability of planktonic food. In a laboratory study,we evaluated effects of temporarily limited access to prey onthe larvae of three species of brachyuran crabs, Chasmagnathusgranulata, Cancer pagurus and Carcinus maenas. Stage-I zoeaewere fed ad libitum for 4 or 6 h per day (20 or 25% treatments;6 h tested in C. pagurus only), and rates of larval survivaland development were compared with those observed in continuouslyfed control groups (24 h, 100%). In C. granulata, we also testedif intraspecific variability in initial biomass of freshly hatchedlarvae originating from different broods has an influence onearly larval tolerance of food limitation. Moreover, we exposedembryos and larvae of this estuarine species to moderately decreasedsalinities to identify possible interactions of osmotic andnutritional stress. Finally, we evaluated in this species theeffect of food limitation on survival from hatching throughall larval instars to metamorphosis. In all three species, limitedaccess to prey had only weak or insignificant negative effectson survival through the Zoea-I stage. The strength of the effectsof temporary food limitation varied in C. granulata significantlyamong broods. However, no significant relationships were foundbetween initial larval biomass (C content) and either survivalor development duration. Strongly decreased survival to metamorphosiswas found when food limitation continued throughout larval development. Thus, early brachyuran crab larvae are well adapted to transitorylack of planktonic food. The capability of the Zoea-I stageof C. granulata to withstand nutritional stress also under conditionsof concomitant salinity stress allows them to exploit variousbrackish environments within estuarine gradients. However, continuedexposure to limited access to planktonic prey may exceed thenutritional flexibility of C. granulata larvae.  相似文献

The complete larval development of the sesarmid crab Perisesarmafasciatum (Lanchester, 1900) from Singapore was obtained fromlaboratory culture. All four zoeal stages, the megalopa andthe first crab stage are described and illustrated. The morphologicalcharacteristics of the larvae of P. fasciatum are compared withthose of other known larvae of the genera Perisesarma and Parasesarma. The larval morphology of P. fasciatum clearly presents the typicalcombination of features that characterize sesarmid larvae. Overall, larval stages are very similar in Perisesarma and Parasesarmaand it is impossible to distinguish these two genera by larvalmorphology.  相似文献

In this study, we show for the first time the dynamics of spongelarvae assemblages from nearshore meroplankton. Plankton wascollected by SCUBA diving once or twice a week during a 2-yearperiod over a rocky artificial reef in the NW Mediterranean.Data on larval abundance were cross correlated with the valuesof environmental parameters (i.e. seawater temperature, solarradiation, wind speed and atmospheric pressure). In the laboratory,we recorded external features and main behaviors of larvae. We collected larvae belonging to 20 different taxa of sponges, which are among the most common in the sublittoral hard bottomcommunities of the NW Mediterranean and other temperate areas. There was a positive correlation between maximum abundance oflarvae and highest water temperatures. Maximum solar radiationpreceded the maximum of larval abundance. Wind speed showedno clear seasonal patterns and atmospheric pressure was overallthe lowest when larvae were most abundant. Two main patternsin the larval release periods were observed. One was shown byspecies releasing larvae in summer, right before the maximumwater temperatures (orders Dictyoceratida and Dendroceratida)and another by the species whose larvae release from the endof summer till autumn, when temperatures decrease (order Poecilosclerida). The larvae of Phorbas tenacior, Raphidoflus jolicoueri, Mycalerotalis, Tedania anhelans, Pleraplysilla spinifera, Aplysillasulfurea var. rosea and Chelonaplysilla noevus are describedfor the first time. The larvae collected mainly belonged tothe parenchymella type (except for the species Oscarella sp.and probably Cliona viridis) and showed different features andbehaviors: from the elongated parenchymellae of Scopalina lophyropoda(order Halichondrida), which show simple swimming behavior andno response to light, to the parenchymellae of Poeciloscleridaand Dictyoceratida orders with variable morphologies as adaptationsto complex swimming behaviors. Our database will hopefully contributeto the present knowledge of larval types in sponges and definitivelyhighlight the importance of this group in the dynamics of meroplanktonfrom nearshore bottoms.  相似文献

A total of ten larval Ammodytes were collected from the Yellow (5 specimens) and Bering Seas (5), and a 638 base pair sequence from their mitochondrial DNA COI genes was analyzed for species identification. Sequences were compared with those of adult Ammodytes personatus from the East (4), the Yellow (2) and the East China Seas (2), and Japan (3). Average genetic distance was 0.064 between the Yellow Sea larvae and the Bering Sea larvae, but was 0.0043 between the Yellow Sea larvae and all the adult A. personatus except two individuals from the East Sea. NJ-tree showed that five Yellow Sea larvae were closely clustered with adult A. personatus, except for two individuals. The five Bering Sea larvae were located distantly from adult A. personatus, and are thought to be A. hexapterus. We found morphological differences among two populations of A. personatus larvae and A. hexapterus larvae in morphometric characters and pigmentation. Our results indicated that the East Sea population of A. personatus is closer to A. hexapterus than to the Yellow Sea population of A. personatus, suggesting the East Sea population may be part of separate species.  相似文献

Certain anthropogenic chemicals, most notably xeno-oestrogens,are known to have the potential to disrupt vertebrate endocrinesystems. For example, induction of the female-specific protein, vitellogenin, in male fish is a well-known effect of exposureto xeno-oestrogens and serves as a biomarker of such exposure. There have been few comparable studies of putative biomarkersof endocrine disruption in invertebrates. An exception is theupregulation of vitellin-like larval storage protein (LSP) expressionin the barnacle cypris larva following exposure to oestrogenicchemicals. The current study aimed to establish whether larvaeof the glass prawn, Palaemon elegans, are likewise susceptibleto xeno-oestrogen exposure. Using a polyclonal antiserum toP. elegans apolipovitellin, an 86 kDa polypeptide was detectedby western blotting in the larval and early postlarval stagesof this species. An indirect ELISA applied to the soluble proteinfraction of larval homogenates determined that the titre ofthis putative LSP ranged, depending on larval stage, from 0.48–0.67ng µg–1. Exposure of P. elegans larvae to the xeno-oestrogen4-n-nonylphenol (4-NP), at 0.2–20 µg L–1,resulted in a significant, concentration-independent increasein putative LSP levels of 5–18%. Conversely, exposureto the natural oestrogen, 17ß-oestradiol (E2), at0.2 and 20 µg L–1, led to a significant concentration-independentdecline (up to 11%) in LSP levels. Whether the effect of 4-NPresults from endocrine disruption is not known, however, anoestrogen receptor-mediated effect is unlikely. Other than aslight increase in larval mortality when exposed to 4-NP at2 µg L–1, neither 4-NP nor E2 significantly affecteddevelopment, growth or survival of P. elegans larvae.  相似文献

The genus Hexapanopeus Rathbun, 1898 contains eight species,of which three are found in the Brazilian coast. The larvaldevelopment of two of these species has already been studiedin the laboratory. This article describes in detail the morphologyof the complete larval stages of Hexapanopeus caribbaeus rearedunder laboratory conditions, and the morphology is comparedwith that of the larvae of the other species of the same genus.  相似文献

Adult female Calappidae were examined with light microscopy and microcomputed tomography for the presence of a pleon‐holding mechanism. A typical press‐button consisting of a protrusion on the fifth thoracic sternite and a socket on the sixth pleon segment was found in species of the genera Calappa, Calappula, Cycloes, Mursia, and Paracyclois. Within the genus Calappa, 15 of 17 species showed a complete press‐button mechanism, whereas in two species only a sternal button or none of the holding structures could be observed. The functionality of the mechanism was assessed by manually flexing and opening the pleon. This revealed a lack of function in species with fully developed holding structures, while others exhibited full function. Additionally, signs of abrasive wear could be identified with scanning electron microscopy on the surface of the holding structures of Calappa hepatica. The documentation of pleon‐holding structures of varying degrees of functionality in adult female eubrachyurans provides new insight into a morphological characteristic known exclusively from Brachyura.  相似文献

Capelin larvae (Mallotus villosus) and mesozooplankton werecollected in May 2001 in the southern part of the Barents Sea.During the period of hatching and first feeding, capelin larvaeexperience high mortality rates. In order to understand theunderlying mechanisms influencing larval survival, we monitoreda selected site for 10 days using a variety of different samplingapproaches. Hydrological parameters conductivity–temperature–depth–fluorescence(CTDF) were recorded and zooplankton samples obtained simultaneouslyusing MOCNESS at three time periods. The mesozooplankton consistedessentially of copepods (85), dominated by Calanus finmarchicus. The zooplankton community consisted of different assemblagesderived from different areas (i.e. different water masses; Atlanticand coastal). Capelin larvae were found in surficial coastalwaters. Copepod nauplii and C. finmarchicus were less abundantin coastal waters where small copepodites (such as Acartia spp.and Temora longicornis) were found together with early stagesof coastal invertebrates that are possible prey for capelinlarvae. We suggest that capelin larvae base their foraging onsmall prey organisms frequently found among the coastal zooplanktonand that these larvae are less dependent on the propagationof the recruiting generation of C. finmarchicus present fromApril to June.  相似文献

The Eastern English Channel is known for its strong hydrodynamics.Tidal and residual currents are reinforced by the south-westerndominant wind and drift waters from the English Channel to theNorth Sea. Previous spatial studies have shown that the advectionof larvae could differ from one species to another. Flounder(Pleuronectes flesus) larvae were found offshore, drifting tothe north until the fins were formed; then they were found nearthe coast. However, sole (Solea solea) larvae remained in coastalwaters during their development. The difference in larval spatialdistribution is assumed to be related to the interaction betweenvertical migration and advection by alternative tidal currents, leading to a selective tidal stream transport. To describe thevertical distribution of these larvae, two strategies were used.First, a Eulerian study was carried out with samples taken atthe same geographical location every 1.5 h for 41 h. Ichthyoplanktonwere collected in the water mass using a Bongo net and witha suprabenthic multi-net sledge, at four layers above the seabed, between 0.1 and 1.4 m. Secondly, to enable water movementto be disregarded, a Lagrangian study was carried out by usinga Bongo net every 3 h, following a drifting buoy for 3 days. The results show that even during the youngest stages, solelarvae are able to perform tidal and diel vertical migration. We assume that they may limit their advection to the North Seabecause of their upward migration during ebb and at night, whichmay enable them to remain in the same area dealing with thecurrents. Flounder larvae begin their vertical migration atthe stage of notochord flexion, which ends their drift to thenorth. The larvae reach the bottom of the water column, particularlyduring ebb when they are concentrated in the first 40 cm abovethe bottom. This behaviour favours their advection during flow, leading to efficient and fast transport towards the coast.  相似文献

The trophodynamics of a coastal plankton community were studied, focusing on fish larvae and their copepod prey. The major objectiveswere to describe distributional overlap and evaluate the predatoryimpact by larval fish. The study was carried out across DoggerBank in the North Sea, August-September 1991. Sampling transectscrossed tidal fronts off the Bank and plankton at all trophiclevels showed peak abundance within frontal zones. Also Verticallythere was a significant overlap in distributional patterns ofthe plankton. Seven species of fish larvae were abundant, ofthese sprat (Sprattus sprattus) dominated. The abundance ofone group of fish larvae peaked in the shallow water close tothe Bank, whereas other species, including sprat, were foundin deeper water. Prey preference and predation pressure of fishlarvae were assessed using information on prey sizes and growthrates of larvae and the copepod prey. We estimated larval removalof preferred prey sizes to 3–4% day–1, counterbalancedby a 3–7% day–1' replenishment from copepod productionand growth. Additional predation pressure on copepods by aninvertebrate predator was estimated to 1–3%day–1.In conclusion, the dynamics of fish larvae and other zooplankterswere closely linked. At peak abundances of fish larvae (>35mg dry weight m–2), the accumulated predation on specificsize ranges of copepods, exerted by larvae and other predators, could exceed the ability of copepod replenishment and intra-/interspecificcompetition among predators might take place.  相似文献

Temperature-dependent stage durations of Irish Sea Nephrops larvae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The relationships between temperature and stage duration ofthe three zoea stages of Irish Sea Nephrops norvegicus wereinvestigated by culturing individual larvae at five differenttemperatures. The relationships are required for estimatingdaily larval production from survey data on abundance. The survivalof cultured larvae was relatively high. Estimates of the temperature–stageduration relationships from data of individual larvae were differentfrom a previous Irish Sea study. However, using the averageduration at each temperature gave relationships that were notsignificantly different from previous studies in the Irish Seaand Clyde. No larvae were successfully reared to stage IV (post-zoea)at lower temperatures, so it was impossible to assess the relationshipbetween stage III larval duration and temperature.  相似文献

The present study was performed to determine the infection status of anisakid larvae in marine fish collected from 3 sea areas of the Republic of Korea. Total 86 marine fish (8 species) collected from the East Sea (Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do), 171 fish (10 species) from the South Sea (Sacheon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do), and 92 fish (7 species) from the Yellow Sea (Incheon Metropolitan City) were examined by both naked eyes and artificial digestion method. Among the total of 349 fish examined, 213 (61.0%) were infected with 8 species of anisakid larvae, i.e., Anisakis simplex, 6 types of Contracaecum spp., and Raphidascaris sp., and the mean larval density was 13.8 per infected fish. Anisakid larvae were detected in 45 fish (52.3%) from the East Sea, 131 fish (76.6%) from the South Sea, and 37 fish (40.2%) from the Yellow Sea. The average numbers of larvae detected were 4.0, 16.6, and 15.9, respectively. Anisakis simplex larvae were detected in 149 fish (42.7%), and the mean larval density was 9.0 per infected fish. They were found in 26 fish (30.2%) collected from the East Sea, 96 fish (56.1%) from the South Sea, and 27 fish (29.3%) from the Yellow Sea. The average numbers of larvae detected were 2.9, 10.3, and 10.5, respectively. Conclusively, the present study suggests that the infection rate and density of anisakid larvae are more or less higher in the fish from the South Sea than those from the East Sea or the Yellow Sea.  相似文献

The present state of knowledge concerning Portunus larvae isreviewed, and the three zoeal and the megalopa stages of P.rubromarginatus are described and figured. Details of appendagesetation are tabulated. This species is unusual amongst knownPortunus spp. in having only three zoeal stages and, like otherPortunus spp. but in contrast with other Portuninae, it has4 + 4, or 4 + 1 + 4, setae on the posterior telson border. When compared with larvae of the five other Indo-West PacificPortunus species whose larvae are known P. rubromarginatus zoeaeare readily distinguished from all, except P. hastatoides, usingthe key features given by Kurata (1975). Comparison was madebetween first zoeae of these two species, and also of P. pelagicusand P. sanguinolentus, using larvae reared by the authors. Itwas found telson characters alone allow distinction betweenlarvae of these four species. These characters are tabulated. P. rubromarginatus megalopae differ from those known for congenitorsin having a large spine on the uchium of the first pereiopod, but not on the carpus, and in having relatively very small sternalcornuae. Several of these features disagree with those previously thoughtto characterise larval Portuninae or Portunus species.  相似文献

The biomass and diversity of the mesozooplankton and fish larvaecommunity were investigated across a frontal zone in the centralNorth Sea in the early summer, to investigate whether larvalfish predation is a regulator of mesozooplankton production.Pronounced changes in the mesozooplankton community were observedacross the front off the Jutlandic coast. The biomass and thediversity of copepods changed across the front as the populationof Calanus finmarchicus became abundant in the deeper water. The crustaceans (Acartia spp. and Evadne spp.) and polychaetelarvae dominated the mesozooplankton in the coastal water. Thebiomass of fish larvae was dominated by gadoid larvae. As inthe copepods, a shift in fish diversity was observed in thefrontal zone. On the coastal side of the front, whiting (Merlangiusmerlangus) dominated the biomass, while offshore from the frontwhiting were absent and cod (Gadus morhua) was the dominantlarval fish species on the deeper stations. The present investigationdemonstrates two different trophic pathways related to hydrographyin the central North Sea. First, in the shallow coastal water, the abundant small neritic copepods are predominately predatedby whiting, while in the offshore region the larger oceaniccopepods are predated by cod larvae. However, the predationpressure by the fish larvae was in general low (<10%) relativeto copepod production per day. Consequently, in the early summer, the copepod production potentially results in a build-up ofcopepod biomass on both sides of the front.  相似文献

To replenish the exploited native stocks ofOstrea edulis, imports from almost all European coasts have arrived in the North Sea, particularly in the Dutch Oosterschelde estuary. The American oysterCrassostrea virginica and the Portuguese oysterC. angulata have also been imported into the North Sea several times. However, only the introductions of various genetic strains of the Pacific oysterC. gigas have been of lasting success. Spat from British Columbia (Canada) was first imported to the Oosterschelde in 1964. First spatfalls in this area took place in the warm summers of 1975 and 1976. Further larval outbursts occurred in 1982 and 1989, and good settlements took place on culture plots as well as along the dikes of the Oosterschelde. Since 1977 no more cupped oysters have been imported from overseas. The population maintained itself and was able to spread in a northern direction along the Dutch North Sea coast. In Britain, hatchery-producedC. gigas were transferred to several sites, in the 1970s including the British North Sea coast. Here, occurrence in the wild seems to be rather limited up to now. Into the German Wadden Sea,C. gigas larvae and spat from a Scottish hatchery have been introduced since 1971, as were medium-sized oysters from a variety of European sources in the 1980s. Strong spatfalls on intertidal mussel beds in the northern German Wadden Sea occured in 1991 and 1994. For the introductions ofC. gigas along the west European coasts, precautionary measures to minimize unintentional transfers of associated organisms, as recommended by the ICES Code of Practice in 1994, came too late.  相似文献

We surveyed springtime biomass and abundance of the >20 µmmicroprotozoa in surface waters of the SE Bering Sea and Shelikof Strait, Alaska. This study was part of the Fisheries OceanographyCoordinated Investigations (FOCI) program examining processeswhich affect the recruitment variability of walleye pollock(Theragra chalcogramma). Microprotozoa are a potential preyresource for larval pollock which has not been previously examined. In both areas, the >20 µm microprotozoa were predominantlydinoflagellates and ciliates. At the time of sampling (May 1990in Shelikof Strait and April 1992 in the SE Bering Sea), thespring diatom bloom was under way in Shelik of Strait, but notin the SE Bering Sea. Heterotrophic dinoflagellates dominatedthe microprotozoan assemblage in Shelik of Strait, but not inthe SE Bering Sea. In the SE Bering Sea. total microprotozoanabundances ranged from 300 to 6233 organisms 1–1 and biomassfrom 0.58 to 9.73 µg C 1–1. In Shelik of Strait, abundance and biomass were higher, ranging from 850 to 14 960organisms 1–1 and from 1.29 to 70.73 µg C 1–1,respectively. These biomass levels are comparable to those reportedfrom other coastal and oceanic regions. Microprotozoan biomasslevels were sufficient to support the estimated metabolic needsof first-feeding larval walleye pollock. It remains to be shownwhether larval pollock use this resource.  相似文献

Japanese Spanish mackerel, Scomberomorus niphonius, larvae feed almost exclusively on fish larvae from the first‐feeding stage. The relationship between the growth of S. niphonius larvae and concentration of major prey organisms of the larvae, clupeid larvae, was investigated in the Sea of Hiuchi, the central Seto Inland Sea, Japan, from 28 to 29 May 1997. Water temperature, salinity, and the concentration of clupeid larvae had no significant effect on the S. niphonius larval concentration. Mean growth rate of S. niphonius larvae varied between 0.38 and 0.64 mm day?1. The temperature and salinity had no significant effect on the mean larval growth rate while there existed prey concentration‐dependent growth at lower prey concentration. The relationship between the mean larval growth rate (Gm) and concentration of clupeid larvae (CC) was expressed by a logarithmic equation: Gm = 0.037 log CC + 0.441 (n = 16, r2 = 0.519, P < 0.01).  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of gymnosome gastropods in theArgentine Sea and Brazil—Malvinas Confluence during 1978–1979and 1988 were studied. The collections analyzed included 768quantitative samples obtained between 48°W and the coast, and from 35°S to 55°S. Two species were found. Spongiobranchaeaaustralis was the most frequent and abundant (up to 730 per1000 m3); its presence in the area was associated with the coreof the Malvinas Current. Clione antarctica was less abundant(maximum abundance: 230 per 1000 m3) and was also associatedwith the Malvinas Current. The geographic ranges of both speciesin the area are wider than previously described. Since the rangeof S. australis in the area extends far from the range of itsprey Clio, it is not clear whether S. australis can feed onthe thecosomatous pteropod Limacina (and not only on Clio, asdescribed in the bibliography) or it starves in that area. Duringthe 1978–1979 annual cycle, the abundance of both speciesfollowed neither the abundance patterns of their prey nor ofthe total zooplankton, and differed from each other. The residencetime of swarms of both gymnosomes were shorter than one month. As a general pattern, the aggregates are rapidly transportednorthward by the Malvinas Current and also penetrate the outershelf water, but they remain there only during a short periodand cannot preclude the final expatriation. So, the abundanceof gymnosomes in the area depends on passive migration morethan intrinsic population factors. (Received 9 July 1997; accepted 15 December 1997)  相似文献
