Results are presented on the phytoplankton species compositionand abundance from bottle samples collected in September 1989near the confluence of the Brazil and Malvinas currents offArgentina. The phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by diatomsand dinoflagellates. A surface diatom bloom was found alongthe west side of the Brazil Current, and was dominated by Thalassiosiradelicatula Ostenfeld emend. Hasle (cell numbers up to 5.5 x105 cells 1–1) The bloom was associated with strong temperaturegradients separating Brazil and Malvinas waters, and with thepresence of a cyclonic eddy near the confluence of the currents. These features were detected in satellite imagery coincidentwith the in situ sampling dates.  相似文献

In a coastal area of southern Chile (41° S), the major ammoniumassimilating enzyme glutamine synthetase (GS) was detected ina green dinoflagellate bloom during April 2003. High chlorophylla concentrations (1000 µg L–1) attributable to Gymnodiniumcf. chlorophorum in surface waters were associated with highand very low nitrate reductase activities. Coincident with thebloom, dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations were nearthe detection limit (NO3 + NH4+ <0.5 µM). SinceGS correlates with the use of ammonium as an external nitrogensource, we suggest that GS activity seems to be a good indicatorof ammonium utilization in a period dominated by a single dinoflagellatespecies.  相似文献

Sedimentation rates of faecal material, phytoplankton and microzooplanktonand production rates of faecal material from crustaceans andpelagic tunicates were estimated during the austral summer andwinter 1997, and summer 1998, in the northern Humboldt Current(23°S, off Antofagasta, Chile). Sampling periods coveredpre-El Niño (January 1997) and El Niño 1997–98(July 1997 and January 1998). Samples were collected using floatingsediment traps deployed at 65, 100, 200 and 300 m depth in oceanicand coastal areas. Sedimentation rates during January 1997 were,on average, 152 ± 23 and 85 ± 57 mg C m–2day–1 at 65 and 300 m depth, respectively. During July, these rates averaged 93 ± 56 mg C m–2 day–1at 65 m depth and 35 ± 12 mg C m–2 day–1at 300 m depth, while in January 1998 they were 98 and 109 ±37 mg C m–2 day–1 at 65 and 200 m depth, respectively.Recognizable faecal material made up the bulk of the sedimentingmatter, accounting for 8 ± 5% (n = 14), 31 ± 26%(n = 16) and 8 ± 5% (n = 5) of the average total organiccarbon recorded from all sediment trap samples collected duringJanuary and July 1997 and January 1998, respectively. However,at300 m depth, the contribution of recognizable faecal materialto total sedimented organic carbon increased to 43 ±33% (n = 4) during July 1997. The remaining sedimenting particlesconsisted mainly of tintinnids, crustacean exuviae, heterotrophicdinoflagellates (both thecated and athecated) and diatom cells.During this study, we estimated that only a minor fraction (average± SD = 5 ± 8%) of the copepod faecal materialproduced within the photic zone sedimented down to 300 m depth, suggesting an efficient recycling within the overlaying watercolumn. On the other hand, an important fraction (47 ±30%) of the euphausiid faecal strings was collected in the 300m depth trap, suggesting that this material would enhance thedownward flux of particulate organic matter (POC). POC fluxesto 65 and 300 m depth traps were in the range of 4–20%and 3–8% of the estimated primary production during thewhole study period. It is postulated that the overall verticalflux of particulates and, in particular, faecal pellets wasdetermined by a combination of three factors. The first wasthe composition of the zooplankton assemblages in the studyarea. When the dominant group was calanoid copepods, their faecesseemed to contribute poorly to the vertical flux of particulates. On the other hand, when the dominant group was euphausiids,a significant proportion of their faecal material was collectedin the sediment trap located at 300 m depth. The second wasthe relatively high abundance of cyclopoid copepods from thegenera Oncaea, Corycaeus and Oithona, which are reported tofeed on aggregates of phytodetritus and faecal pellets producedby calanoid copepods, suggesting that they may act as a naturalfilter to sedimenting particulates. The third was the compositionand size spectrum of the phyto- and microzooplankton assemblageswhich are potential food sources for the meso- and macrozooplankton. These factors were partially modulated by both the 1997–1998El Niño and seasonality.  相似文献

The geographical distribution, seasonal life cycle, biomassand production of a copepod Calanus sinicus were investigatedin and around Kii Channel of the Inland Sea of Japan. The distributioncenter of the population was located in Kii Channel. The patternof the seasonal variation in abundance of copepodites and adultsdiffered geographically within the study area. In Kii Channel, for example, they were most abundant in June-July and leastabundant in October. Over the study area, the reproduction ofC.sinicus took place throughout the year, indicating the absenceof diapause phase. In adults, females usually outnumbered males. The prosome length of late copepodites and adults was inverselycorrelated with water temperature. The annual mean biomass washighest (4.87 mg C m–3 or 231 mg C m–2) in Kii Channel. The potential production rate of the population exhibited aseasonal variation more or less similar to that of the biomassand the annual potential production rate was 358 mg C m–3year–1 (14.1 g C m–2 year–1) in Kii Channel.Daily production and biomass (P/B) ratios in Kii Channel increasedfrom 0.11 at 11.8°C to 0.26 at 20°C.  相似文献

The seasonal variability of phytoplankton in the EquatorialAtlantic was analysed using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor(SeaWiFS)-derived chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration data from1998 to 2001, together with in situ Chl a and primary productiondata obtained during seven cruises carried out between 1995and 2000. Monthly averaged SeaWiFS Chl a distributions werein agreement with previous observations in the Equatorial Atlantic, showing marked differences between 10° W in the EasternTropical Atlantic (ETRA) and 25° W in the Western TropicalAtlantic (WTRA) provinces (Longhurst et al. 1995. J. PlanktonRes., 17, 1245–1271). The seasonal cycle of SeaWiFS-derivedChl a concentration calculated for 0–10° S, 0–20°W (ETRA) is consistent with in situ Chl a measurements, withvalues ranging from 0.16 mg m–3, from February to April,to 0.52 mg m–3 in August. Lower variability was observedin 10° N–10° S, 20–30° W (WTRA) whereminimum and maximum concentrations occurred in April (0.15 mgm–3) and in August (0.24 mg m–3), respectively.A significant empirical relationship between depth-integratedprimary production and in situ measured sea surface Chl a wasfound for ETRA, allowing us to estimate the seasonal cycle ofdepth-integrated primary production from SeaWiFS-derived Chla. As for Chl a, this model was verified in a small area ofthe Eastern Equatorial Atlantic (0–10° S, 0–20°W), although in this instance it was not completely able todescribe the magnitude and temporal variability of in situ primaryproduction measurements. The annual euphotic depth-integratedprimary production rate estimated for ETRA by our empiricalmodel was 1.4 Gt C year–1, which represents 16% of theopen ocean primary production estimated for the whole AtlanticOcean.  相似文献

Microplanktonic respiration rates were estimated in waters offthe coast of northern Chile (Antofagasta, 23°S) during ElNiño and pre-El Niño conditions. Three cruiseswere conducted during pre-El Niño summer (January/February1997), El Niño winter (July 1997) and El Niñosummer (January 1998). Oxygen consumption was estimated by theWinkler method using a semi-automatic photometric end-pointdetector. The ranges of microplanktonic respiration rates foundwere 0.11–21.15, 0.03–6.25 and 0.06–9.01 µmolO2 l–1 day–1 during pre-El Niño summer, ElNiño winter and El Niño summer, respectively.Significant differences were found between winter and summerrespiration rates (non-integrated and integrated). The meanintegrated respiration (mixed layer) for pre-El Niñosummer, El Niño winter and El Niño summer was95 ± 51 (SD) mmol O2 m–2 day–1, 50 ±23 (SD) mmol O2 m–2 day–1 and 63 ± 32 (SD)mmol O2 m–2 day–1, respectively. The strong seasonalsignal detected in microplanktonic integrated respiration inthe area seems to be characteristic of the pre-El Niño/ElNiño 1997–98 period. The integrated respirationrates found off Antofagasta are similar to reported values forthe upwelling area off Peru despite methodological differences.A positive significant correlation was found between respirationand water temperature (r = 0.76, P  相似文献

In October 1977 the model of general circulation of the watermasses off the coast of Galicia, and the presence of a coastalupwelling, led to a high primary productivity. This high productivityin turn favoured the development of a rich population of decapodlarvae. The abundance and distribution pattern of these organismswere closely linked (i) to the abundant presence of the correspondingadult species in the area, (ii) with the spatial distributionof phytoplanktonic populations concurrently studied by Estrada[J. Plankton Res ., 6, 417–434 (1984)] and (iii) withthe hydrodynamic pattern in the area. Fifty-two decapod larvaetaxa were identified and Solenocera membranacea, Pisidia longicornis,Pilumnushirtellus and Goneplax rhomboides were the most representativespecies It was observed that the greatest concentrations oflarvae (3387 larvae 10–2 m–3) were to be found nearthe mouth of the Rfas Baixas (situated in the south-west ofthe coastal area) and in some zones further out to sea (863larvae 10–2 m–3) (due to a process of hydrodynamictransport)  相似文献

Zooplankton samples were collected in Mejillones Bay, northernChile (23°00'15'S, 70°26'43'W ). Sampling was conductedat 4 h intervals, for 24 h during three seasons, austral spring(October 2000), summer ( January 2001) and winter (August 2001)at three different strata (0–25, 25–50 and 50–100m). Five species of chaetognaths were collected. Sagitta enflatawas the most abundant species, representing up to 65% of allchaetognaths in total numbers, followed by Sagitta bierii, makingup 34% of the total abundance of chaetognaths. S. enflata wasdistributed mainly above the Oxygen Minimum Zone, while S. bieriiremained below this zone. Feeding rates were relatively constantwithin the upper layer (0–25 m depth), for each samplingdate, averaging 1.2 prey S. enflata day–1, and decreasingwith depth. Gut content analyses demonstrated that predationwas principally focused on small copepods (<1500 µm),with greatest feeding activity occurring at night. The dailypredation impact on the total standing stock of small copepodsvaried seasonally between 6% in spring and 0.4% in winter. Thispercentage may represent a negligible impact on the entire copepodcommunity, but it is relevant at the species or genus level, since S. enflata removed more than 20% of the standing stockof Centropages brachiatus and Corycaeus sp. Thus, during someperiods of the year, chaetognaths may strongly influence theabundance and size distribution of copepods in coastal upwellingecosystems.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and feeding of pelagic chaetognathsat 5°S, 160°W in the Central Equatorial Pacific wereinvestigated using a series of 0–500 m vertical haulswith a VMPS net over a 24 h period between 6 and 7 October 1990.The total number of individuals per haul was between 370 and688. Fourteen species in four genera were found at this station. The most abundant species was Sagitta enflata which comprised32.4–61.1% of the individuals collected from the 0–500m layer. Mesopelagic species made up 9.3–15.1% of thetotal number of individuals. Sagitta enflata and Pterosagittadraco were found in the upper part of the thermocline both byday and at night. The fraction of the population containingfood items (FCF) of S.enflata in the 0–50 m layer variedbetween 4.8 and 12.5% (mean 10.8%) and feeding activity washighest between sunrise and noon. The percentages of Copepoda,Foraminifera, crustacean larvae, Chaetognatha, Pteropoda, Ostracoda, fish and unidentified material in the gut of S.enflata were51.9,6.7,3.8,2.9,1.9,1.9 and 30.9%, respectively. Sagitta enflataconsumed food organisms which were mainly between 0.5 and 1.0mm in length. The daily feeding rate of S.enflata was 1.81 preyper individual, which was equivalent to 8.06 mg C m–2day–1. We report that growth of Dunaliella salina at either 13°C/150µmol m–2s–1 or 30°C/2,500 µmol m–2s–1 results in the accumulation of comparable levels ofcarotenoids and the zeaxanthin-binding protein, Cbr. We concludethat carotenoid and Cbr abundance in this green alga respondto changes in PSII ‘excitation pressure’ ratherthan to high light per se. Photosynthetic 14C fixation by Characean cells in solutionsof high pH containing NaH14CO3 gave a measure of the abilityof these cells to take up bicarbonate (H14CO3). Whereascells of Nitella translucens from plants collected and thenstored in the laboratory absorbed bicarbonate at 1–1.5µµmoles cm–2 sec–1, rates of 3–8µµmoles cm–2 sec–1 were obtained withN. translucens cells from plants grown in the laboratory. Influxesof 5–6 µµmoles cm–2 sec–1 wereobtained with Chara australis, 3–8 µµmolescm–2 sec–1 with Nitellopsis obtusa, and 1–5µµmoles cm–2 sec–1 with Tolypella intricata. It is considered that these influxes represent the activityof a bicarbonate pump, which may be an electrogenic process. In solutions of lower pH, H14CO3 uptake would be maskedby rapid diffusion of 14CO2 into the cells: the four Characeanspecies fixed 14CO2 at maximum rates of 30–40 µµmolescm–2 sec–1 (at 21° C).  相似文献

The growth of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in conditionstypical of April in Southern England (8 °C day/4 °Cnight, 12 h photoperiod of 90 J m–2 s–1 visibleradiation) was extremely slow, whether the plants were dependentfor nitrogen on fixation by their root nodules or were suppliedwith abundant nitrate; although growth was slower in the nodulatedplants. The reasons for slow growth were a large root: shootratio and a small leaf area, particularly in the nodulated plants, and a low photosynthetic rate in all plants. The probable effectsof these characteristics on the growth of white clover withgrasses in mixed pastures are discussed. The structure of the zooplankton biotic community and of copepodpopulation in the coastal area of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea,Antarctica) was investigated during the 10th Italian AntarcticExpedition (1994/1995). Zooplankton biotic community consistedmainly of pteropods (Limacina helicina and Clione antarctica),Cyclopoid (Oithona similis), Poecilostomatoid (Oncaea curvata)and Calanoid (Ctenocalanus vanus, Paraeuchaeta antarctica, Metridiagerlachei and Stephos longipes) copepods, ostracods, larvalpolychaetes and larval euphausiids. Zooplankton abundance rangedfrom 48.1 ind m–3 to 5968.9 ind m–3, and copepodabundance ranged from 45.2 ind m–3 to 3965.3 ind m–3.The highest peak of zooplankton abundance was observed between25 m and the surface and was mainly due to the contributionof O. similis, O. curvata and C. vanus. Zooplankton biomassranged from 5.28 mg m–3 to 13.04 mg m–3 dry weight;the maximum value was observed between 25 m and the surface.Total lipid content varied from 216.44 to 460.73 mg g–1dry weight.  相似文献

Acclimation of NO3 transport fluxes (influx, efflux)in roots of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Bien venu) andtheir sensitivity to growth at low root temperature was studiedin relation to external NO3 supply, defined by constantconcentrations ranging from sub- to supra-optimal with respectto plant growth rate. Plants were grown from seed in flowingnutrient solutions containing 250 mmol m–3 NO3at 17°C for 20d, and solution temperature in half the cultureunits was then lowered decrementally over 3 d to 7°C. Threedays later plants were supplied with NO3 at 1, 10, 100or 1000 mmol m–3 maintained for 18 d. Dry matter productionwas decreased more by low root zone temperature than low [NO3]e. Root specific growth rates were inversely related to [NO3]eand shoot:root ratios increased with time at [NO3]e between10–1000 mmol m–3. Net uptake of NO3 at 17°Cwas twice that at 7°C, and at both temperatures it doubledwith increasing [NO3]e between 1–10 mmol m–3with further small increases at higher [NO3]e. Mean unitabsorption rates of NO3 between 0–6 d and 6–14d were linearly related (r2 of 0.79–0.99) to log10[NO].Steady-state Q10 (7–17°C) for uptake between 0–6d were 0.91, 1.62, 1.27, and 1.10, respectively, at [NO3]eof 1, 10, 100, and 1000 mmol m–3, compared with correspondingvalues of 0.98, 1.38, 1.68, and 1.89 between 6–14 d. Thedata indicated that net uptake rates at 7 and 17°C divergedover time at high [NO3]e. Short-term uptake rates from1 mol m–3 NO3 measured at 17°C were higherin plants grown with roots at 7°C than at 17°C; for7°C plants there was a strong inverse linear relationship(r2=0.94) between uptake rate and treatment log10 [NO3]ewhilst rates in 17°C plants were independent of prior [NO3]e. Rates of NO3 influx and efflux under different steady-stateconditions of NO3 supply and root temperature were calculatedfrom dilution of 15N added to culture solutions. Efflux wassubstantial relative to net uptake in all treatments, and wasinversely related to [NO3]e at 17°C but not at 7°C.Ratios of influx: efflux ranged from 1.6–2.9 at 17°Cand 1.3–1.8 at 7°C, indicating the proportionatelygreater impact of efflux at low root temperature. Ratios ofefflux: net uptake were 0.53–1.56 at 17°C and 1.21–3.58at 7°C. The apparent sensitivities of influx and effluxto steady-state root temperature varied with [NO3]e.Both fluxes were higher at 17°C than 7°C in the presenceof 100–1000 mmol m–3 NO3 but the trend wasreversed at 1–10 mmol m–3 NO. Concentrations oftotal N measured in xylem exudate were at least 2-fold higherat 7°C compared with 17°C, attributable mainly to higherconcentrations of NO3 glutamine and proline. The resultsare discussed in terms of acclimatory and other responses shownby the NO3 transport system under conditions of limitingNO3 supply and low root temperature. Rotifers are a relatively well-studied component of lacustrinesystems but their role is only poorly understood in estuaries.Three species of the genus Synchaeta—S. baltica, S. triophthalmaand S.cecilia—dominate the cold-water assemblage of rotifersin Chesapeake Bay. Laboratory experiments were conducted todetermine the temperature dependence of egg development time(EDT) for each species; EDT varied over an approximate rangeof 90–9 h as temperature (T) varied from 2 to 22°C.The EDT/temperature relationships could be closely fitted bya simple polynomial equation of the form log(EDT) = a + b(logT) + c(log T)2 for each species. Natural populations of thesethree rotifers were sampled during a cruise in the Potomac River(7–11 March 1983). Estimates of specific reproductiverates (b) were calculated based on the previously defined EDT/temperaturerelationship and the observed ratio of eggs/rotifers for eachspecies. The two most abundant species, S.triophthalma and S.cecilia, showed a clear dependence of b on the observed chlorophyll aconcentrations. Maximum reproductive rates ({small tilde}0.015h–1) were attained only at relatively high phytoplanktondensities within a bloom of Heterocapsa triquetra where thechlorophyll a concentrations exceeded 10 µg l–1.Estimates of secondary production suggest that Synchaeta spp.may contribute to the trophic flow of carbon in this systemwith a significance at least similar to that of the planktoniccopepods.  相似文献

Potato production in the tropical lowlands during the rainyseason is constrained by high temperature and low irradiance. This study examined the effect of these two variables on drymatter production and allocation, using plant growth, leaf anatomy, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. Plantsof two clones, Solanum goniocalyx cv. Garhuash Huayro (GH) andDTO-33, a heat tolerant clone of S. tuberosum x S. phureja, were grown in growth chambers at 33/25 °C or 20/10 °Cday/night temperature. At each temperature, plants were grownin either 12 h high irradiance (430–450 µmol m–2s–1 PAR) or 12 h low irradiance (250–280 µmolm–2 s–1) both with a 6–h photoperiod extensionof 6 µmol m–2 s–1. Plants were harvested after10 d (initial harvest) and after 20 d (final harvest). By theend of the study DTO-33 had produced more dry matter and hadtuberized, whereas GH had a greater leaf area ratio (LAR) andspecific leaf area (SLA). The highest relative growth rate (RGR)was at low temperature and low irradiance, possibly due to acombination of thin leaves with a large surface area. At thehigh temperature, low irradiance had the opposite effect, producingthe lowest net assimilation rate (NAR) and lowest RGR. Bothtuber number and weight were markedly reduced by high temperature.Low irradiance, in combination with high temperature, producedvirtually no tubers. Stomatal density, which was greater onGH than in DTO-33, was increased at high temperature. When measuredat 30 °C both clones, especially DTO-33, showed heat-adaptationin terms of ability to maintain a high rate of net photosynthesisat 30 °C. Plants grown at high irr-adiance and low temperaturehad the lowest net photosynthetic rate at 30 °C. Concurrentmeasurements of chlorophyll fluorescence indicated that onlythe initial (O) fluorescence parameter was affected. The dataconfirm the field observation that reduction in potato growthat high temperature can be aggravated by lower irradiance. Thisreduction is associated with a reduced leaf area and NAR. Fluxes of diatoms in the Dona Paula Bay, west coast of India   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Sediment traps were deployed at a station in the Dona PaulaBay to collect sedimenting particles at weekly intervals fromNovember to May during 1995–1997. Sedimented particleswere analysed for total diatom flux, chlorophyll a (Chl a) andparticulate organic carbon (POC). The highest diatom flux wasrecorded in April–May for both the years. Fluxes of diatomsvaried from0.6 x 104 cells m–2 day–1 (November 1995)to 121.47 x 104 cells m–2 day–1 (December 1996).In all, 19 diatom genera were identified in the sedimented material.Navicula, Nitzschia, Pleurosigma, Licmophora, Coscinodiscus,Rhizosolenia and Surirella were the most abundant genera inthe sedimented material throughout the sampling period. Meanflux of POC and diatom carbon was 251 and 0.39 mg C m–2day–1, respectively. The diatom carbon accounted for 0.15%of the POC flux. Mass flux of diatoms showed significant negativecorrelation with the concentration of nitrate and phosphate. This suggests that the nutrient concentration played an importantrole in influencing the sedimentation of diatoms at this coastalstation.  相似文献

The seasonal composition of phytoplankton communities was investigatedin a Mediterranean brackish area (Varano lagoon). Twelve stationswere sampled monthly from March 1997 to February 1998. Numbersof prokaryotic and eukaryotic picophytoplankton cells were estimatedby epifluorescence microscopy, while larger phytoplankton (nanoand micro fractions) were enumerated by the Utermöhl settlingtechnique. Picophytoplankton densities ranged from 0.7 to 448.6cells x 106 l–1. Nano- and microphytoplankton abundancesvaried between 0.2 and 7.9 cells x 106 l–1. The picoplanktonfraction was represented mainly by cyanobacteria and the Utermöhlfraction by nano-sized phytoflagellates (56.2%) and diatoms(20.1%). The phytoflagellates had a greater abundance over timewhile diatoms reached the highest densities in summer and fall.In Varano lagoon, phytoplankton development is related to ‘nitrogen-poor'waters and to phosphorus availability. Suspension-feeding bivalves(Mytilus galloprovincialis) are sufficiently abundant to filtera volume equivalent to the volume of Varano lagoon at leastonce daily. These observations suggest that grazing exerts animportant influence on phytoplankton dynamics, mainly on themicro fraction, and that diatoms seem to play an important rolein the food web dynamics of this coastal fishery.  相似文献

Seasonal and vertical fluctuations of zooplankton species composition, biomass, and production were monitored by weekly sampling duringa two year period in one eutrophic pond in Central Finland. The study was one part of a more comprehensive study programto investigate the effects of warm water effluents from onesmall thermal power plant (35 MW) on the pond ecosystem. Becauseof the circulation of the pond water through the pumps in thepower plant the crustacean populations were very sparse in planktonduring the seasons the power plant was in operation (late Augustto May). During that time rotifers were dominant and some speciesreached very high densities (e.g., Keratella cochlearis s.l.ca. 15 000 ind. l–1 in sping). In summer months Asplanchnapriodonta, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, Bosmina longirostris, Mesocyclopsleuckarti and Thermocyclops oithonoides were dominant. A totalof 96 planktonic and meroplanktonic taxa were identified (26ciliates, 46 rotifers, 21 cladocerans and 3 copepods). The dryweight biomass of total zooplankton was 10 mg m–3 in wintermonths, 10–100 mg m–3 in spring and 300–1000mg m–3 in summer. The total yearly production of zooplanktonwas 8552 mg dry wt m–3 a–1 in 1979 and 8440 mg drywt m–3 a–1 in 1980, from which the proportion ofrotifers was 33–39%, cladocerans 52–58% and copepods8.6 –9.4%. The winter production was 0.2–0.5% ofthe total yearly production, that of spring and autumn togetherwas 8.1–10.4% and the remainder (89–91%) was summerproduction.  相似文献

The gut fluorescence technique was used to estimate ingestionand filtration rates of the adult female copepods Paracalanusparvus, Cenlropages brachiatus and Calanus austrails, and copepoditestages 3, 4 and 5 of C.australis in the southern Benguela upwellingregion. During the study period chlorophyll concentrations withinthe upper 20 m of the water column were high, 5 µg I–1in mid-shelf waters and 15–30 µg I–1 in innershelf waters. Copepod gut pigment content was low and constantduring the day then increased sharply during the first 2 h aftersunset. Gut pigment content was 2–6 times higher duringthe night compared with daytime values. Small non-migratingcopepods (Paracalanus parvus) showed the smallest diel differencein gut pigment content and large migrating copepods (Centropagesbrachiatus and Calanus australis) the largest difference. Eggproduction rates were 20 and 50% of maximum at the mid-shelfand inner shelf stations respectively, suggesting food-limitation.Comparison of ingestion rates calculated from egg productiondata with ingestion rates calculated from gut pigment data suggestedthat the copepods were feeding omnivorously at the inner shelfstations but herbivorously at the mid-shelf stations. Assumingthat all of the phytoplankton was available as food, the nearshorecopepod assemblage grazed {small tilde}1% of the standing cropeach day, and the mid-shelf assemblage grazed 5% day–1.Because of errors and uncertainties associated with the gutfluorescence technique, the feeding impact could be underestimatedby 2–4-fold. We discuss several approaches which couldlead to more precise estimates of feeding rates. 3Present address: Marine Sciences, SUNY, Stony Brook, NY, 11794-5000,USA  相似文献
