Many animal groups use sounds in reproduction in order to court mates or repel rivals. We describe the sounds and behavioural context of courtship sound production in male sand gobies, Pomatoschistus minutus, and examine the variability of acoustic parameters and the fine temporal patterning of sound units. Male sand gobies excavate a nest under a suitable solid substrate and attract females to mate, attaching the eggs to the ceiling of the nest. Before mating a female may repeatedly enter and leave a male's nest. Sounds were not detected during the courtship phase outside the nest, but were recorded when females were in the nest before spawning. Sounds were produced in 44–100% of such nest visits, varying with individual males. The sand goby sound consists of a train of pulses repeated at a rate of 23–29 pulses per second. The frequency spectrum of single pulses was continuous from 20–30Hz to 500Hz and reached a peak around 100Hz. The absolute sound pressure level ranged from 118 to 138dB re 1µPa at 1–3cm. The sand goby emits sound in distinct sound groups (bursts). Sound temporal features (duration, pulse repetition rate) vary systematically over the course of the burst. Within- and between-male variation of acoustic parameters was examined from sounds emitted by the male. Sound amplitude (peak-to-peak, mV) and pulse rate varied significantly among males, despite low individual stereotypy. Furthermore, sound pressure level correlated with body size. The potential informative content of acoustic parameters is discussed in the light of a possible role of the sand goby sound in mate choice.  相似文献

The male Arno goby Padogobius nigricans courts ripe females by emitting sounds at a high rate, mainly from the nest hollow. Laboratory observations revealed that each sound is an almost pure tone wave showing marked amplitude modulation and decrease of frequency throughout its length. The mean tone frequency averaged 79.4 Hz and the sound duration averaged 327 ms. Both these sound parameters were significantly affected by the temperature of the water. Acoustic behaviour during sexual interactions was compared for tank-confined males and males from a community group. The fact that acoustic activity of the male peaked when the female stayed motionless at the nest entrance suggested that the sound emitted by the male P. nigricans has a role as an advertising signal. Observation of spawning behaviour showed the emission of sounds by the male rapidly diminished and eventually ceased shortly after the beginning of oviposition. Thus, the male sound seems not to be a functional component of the spawning behaviour. Finally, data on vocal behaviour of this species were examined within a comparative framework, also taking into consideration phylogenetic relationships between Italian freshwater gobies.  相似文献

Animals often vocalize during territorial challenges as acoustic signals may indicate motivation and fighting ability and contribute to reduce aggressive escalation. Here, we tested the function of agonistic sounds in territorial defence in the painted goby. Pomatoschistus pictus, a small vocal marine fish that defends nests during the breeding season. We first measured the number of times a male approached, avoided, explored, entered and exited two unattended nests associated with either conspecific agonistic sounds or a control: silence or white noise. Acoustic stimuli were played back when the male approached a nest. In a second experimental set, we added visual stimuli, consisting of a conspecific male in a small confinement aquarium near each nest. Even though we found no effect of the visual stimuli, the sound playbacks induced similar effects in both experimental conditions. In the sound vs. silence treatment, we found that when males approached a nest, the playback of conspecific sounds usually triggered avoidance. However, this behaviour did not last as in longer periods males visited nests associated with agonistic sounds more often than silent ones. When the control was white noise, we found no significant effect of the playback treatment in male behaviour. Although we cannot exclude the possibility that other sounds may dissuade nest occupation, our results suggest that agonistic sounds act as territorial intrusion deterrents but are insufficient to prevent nest intrusion on their own. Further studies are needed to test the significance of sound production rate, spectral content and temporal patterns to deter territorial intrusion in fish.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction in all animals depends on effective communication between signalers and receivers. Many fish species, especially the African cichlids, are well known for their bright coloration and the importance of visual signaling during courtship and mate choice, but little is known about what role acoustic communication plays during mating and how it contributes to sexual selection in this phenotypically diverse group of vertebrates. Here we examined acoustic communication during reproduction in the social cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni. We characterized the sounds and associated behaviors produced by dominant males during courtship, tested for differences in hearing ability associated with female reproductive state and male social status, and then tested the hypothesis that female mate preference is influenced by male sound production. We show that dominant males produce intentional courtship sounds in close proximity to females, and that sounds are spectrally similar to their hearing abilities. Females were 2-5-fold more sensitive to low frequency sounds in the spectral range of male courtship sounds when they were sexually-receptive compared to during the mouthbrooding parental phase. Hearing thresholds were also negatively correlated with circulating sex-steroid levels in females but positively correlated in males, suggesting a potential role for steroids in reproductive-state auditory plasticity. Behavioral experiments showed that receptive females preferred to affiliate with males that were associated with playback of courtship sounds compared to noise controls, indicating that acoustic information is likely important for female mate choice. These data show for the first time in a Tanganyikan cichlid that acoustic communication is important during reproduction as part of a multimodal signaling repertoire, and that perception of auditory information changes depending on the animal's internal physiological state. Our results highlight the importance of examining non-visual sensory modalities as potential substrates for sexual selection contributing to the incredible phenotypic diversity of African cichlid fishes.  相似文献

The role of sound production of the Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus in agonistic and mating interactions observed during hierarchy formation and in established groups was examined. Only territorial males produced sounds, during male–female and male–male courtship interactions and during pit-related activities ( e.g. dig, hover and still in the nest). Sound production rate was positively correlated with courting rate. Although sounds in other cichlids are typically emitted in early stages of courtship, O. mossambicus produced sounds in all phases, but especially during late stages of courtship, including spawning. It is suggested that the acoustic emissions in this species may play a role in advertising the presence and spawning readiness of males and in synchronizing gamete release.  相似文献

In this study, the reproductive behavior of Economidichthys pygmaeus was investigated under laboratory conditions with simultaneous video and acoustic recordings. Males of the freshwater goby E. pygmaeus do not produce sounds either during the courtship/spawning phase or during aggressive interactions. A detailed analysis of the behavioral sequences revealed the absence of any digging and nest-building activities, whereas the other behavioral components of courtship and spawning are similar to those described for other goby species, showing also a similar function. Results were discussed in terms of secondary loss of sound production within the sand gobies, a group of highly soniferous fishes in the family Gobiidae.  相似文献

Many insects exhibit secondary defence mechanisms upon contact with a predator, such as defensive sound production or regurgitation of gut contents. In the tettigoniid Poecilimon ornatus, both males and females are capable of sound production and of regurgitation. However, wing stridulatory structures for intraspecific acoustic communication evolved independently in males and females, and may result in different defence sounds. Here we investigate in P. ornatus whether secondary defence behaviours, in particular defence sounds, show sex-specific differences. The male defence sound differs significantly from the male calling song in that it has a longer syllable duration and a higher number of impulses per syllable. In females, the defence sound syllables are also significantly longer than the syllables of their response song to the male calling song. In addition, the acoustic disturbance stridulation differs notably between females and males as both sexes exhibit different temporal patterns of the defence sound. Furthermore, males use defence sounds more often than females. The higher proportion of male disturbance stridulation is consistent with a male-biased predation risk during calling and phonotactic behaviour. The temporal structures of the female and male defence sounds support a deimatic function of the startling sound in both females and males, rather than an adaptation for a particular temporal pattern. Independently of the clear differences in sound defence, no difference in regurgitation of gut content occurs between the sexes.  相似文献

Male courtship songs have two functions in species recognition and intraspecific mate choice. Female preference might thus exert different types of selection pressure on male song traits. We used a combination of acoustic mate choice experiments and statistical analyses to examine how traits of the calling songs of male nightingale grasshoppers,Chorthippus biguttulus , are influenced by different sexual selection pressures. We recorded calling songs of males and tested their attractiveness to females in acoustic mate choice experiments. The attractiveness values were a good estimate of the potential male mating success. In experiments with a pair of males, females copulated significantly more often with the male that had the higher attractiveness value. To detect directional, stabilizing, disruptive or correlative selection acting on male song properties we used linear and nonlinear regressions between male song traits and female response behaviour. Three signal traits were revealed to be under directional selection: song loudness, pause to syllable ratio and the mean duration of gaps within syllables. A nonlinear regression testing for correlative selection showed that a fourth song trait, rhythm, in combination with mean gap duration was also important for female mate choice. With these traits and trait combinations we were able to explain 42% of the variance in attractiveness between males. Since we found no evidence for stabilizing selection, but ample evidence for directional selection, we conclude that selection on the traits examined is related to mate choice mainly in the context of intraspecific sexual selection and probably less so in species recognition. Amount of calling activity (calling effort) is a strong determinant of male mating success in species such as orthopterans and anurans that use acoustic communication in the context of mating behaviour. While many studies in crickets have investigated the determinants of calling effort, patterns of variability in male calling effort in natural choruses remain largely unexplored. Within-individual variability in calling activity across multiple nights of calling can influence female mate search and mate choice strategies. Moreover, calling site fidelity across multiple nights of calling can also affect the female mate sampling strategy. We therefore investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of acoustic signaling behaviour in a wild population of the field cricket species Plebeiogryllus guttiventris. We first studied the consistency of calling activity by quantifying variation in male calling effort across multiple nights of calling using repeatability analysis. Callers were inconsistent in their calling effort across nights and did not optimize nightly calling effort to increase their total number of nights spent calling. We also estimated calling site fidelity of males across multiple nights by quantifying movement of callers. Callers frequently changed their calling sites across calling nights with substantial displacement but without any significant directionality. Finally, we investigated trade-offs between within-night calling effort and energetically expensive calling song features such as call intensity and chirp rate. Calling effort was not correlated with any of the calling song features, suggesting that energetically expensive song features do not constrain male calling effort. The two key features of signaling behaviour, calling effort and call intensity, which determine the duration and spatial coverage of the sexual signal, are therefore uncorrelated and function independently.  相似文献

Synopsis Males of two freshwater Italian gobies, the common goby, Padogobius martensii and the panzarolo goby, Knipowitschia punctatissima, emit trains of low-frequency pulses, i.e. drumming sounds, in the presence of a ripe female in the nest. In P, martensii the drumming sound is usually followed by a tonal sound (complex sound). Examination of the pulse structure suggests that these sounds are produced by muscles acting on the swimbladder. Both species exhibited high emission rates of spawning sounds, especially before the beginning of oviposition. Moreover, spawning sound production ceased only after the female abandoned the nest, which always occurred at the end of oviposition. This is the first study reporting the production among fishes of distinct sounds during protracted spawning. Unlike sounds produced just before mating by fishes with planktonic or demersal zygotes, the spawning sound production of these gobies does not function to coordinate mating events in the nest. The presence of a two-part vocalization by male P. martensii even suggests a functional dichotomy of spawning sounds in this species.  相似文献

Background

Sound production is widespread among fishes and accompanies many social interactions. The literature reports twenty-nine cichlid species known to produce sounds during aggressive and courtship displays, but the precise range in behavioural contexts is unclear. This study aims to describe the various Oreochromis niloticus behaviours that are associated with sound production in order to delimit the role of sound during different activities, including agonistic behaviours, pit activities, and reproduction and parental care by males and females of the species.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Sounds mostly occur during the day. The sounds recorded during this study accompany previously known behaviours, and no particular behaviour is systematically associated with sound production. Males and females make sounds during territorial defence but not during courtship and mating. Sounds support visual behaviours but are not used alone. During agonistic interactions, a calling Oreochromis niloticus does not bite after producing sounds, and more sounds are produced in defence of territory than for dominating individuals. Females produce sounds to defend eggs but not larvae.

Conclusion/Significance

Sounds are produced to reinforce visual behaviours. Moreover, comparisons with O. mossambicus indicate two sister species can differ in their use of sound, their acoustic characteristics, and the function of sound production. These findings support the role of sounds in differentiating species and promoting speciation. They also make clear that the association of sounds with specific life-cycle roles cannot be generalized to the entire taxa.  相似文献

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a widely studied group of chemicals that interfere with the endocrinology of organisms. So far, few studies have demonstrated the effect of EDCs on the reproductive behavior of aquatic wildlife. Here we show that sand goby males' (Pomatoschistus minutus) success in mating competition greatly decreases after an exposure for 7 to 24 days to 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2, measured concentration 4 ng L− 1). The sand goby exhibits a polygynous mating system with male parental care, in which males compete for nest sites and females. The aim of this study was to test how EE2 exposure affects the ability of males to compete for breeding resources, i.e. nest sites and mates. First, EE2 exposed males competed over a nest site against a non-exposed, control male of the same size. Secondly, we examined male courtship behavior and female mate preferences for EE2 exposed males and similar-sized non-exposed, control males. In addition to the behavioral experiments we determined the zona radiata protein (Zrp) mRNA gene expression and measured morphometric indicators of sexual maturation. Our study revealed that EE2 treated males were not able to acquire or defend a nest site. Additionally, EE2 treated males spent significantly less time in active courtship and nest leading behavior than control males. As a result, females clearly preferred to mate with control males. However, we found no significant differences in Zrp mRNA expression or the morphometric indicators between treatments. Our study illustrates that exposure to this EDC can greatly reduce the chances of an individual reproducing successfully. Moreover, it demonstrates that severe behavioral effects can be seen before any effects are detectable at the molecular or morphometric level.  相似文献

A detailed study of courtship in Spodoptera littoralis showed that there were four significant behaviour patterns. The male flew to a calling female and hovered above her with his brushes fully extended. In response, the female lifted her wings, curved her abdomen and withdrew her pheromone gland. The male settled beside the female to pair and then moved to hang head downwards during copulation. Thirty percent of successful courtships lacked one of the main behaviour patterns. Nearly half the courtships observed did not end in copulation: none of these included all of four major behaviour patterns and the majority lacked two or three. Females often rejected males with a rapid flick of the wings. Antennaless males did not mate or extend the brushes in response to a calling female. Just over half of the antennaless females observed during 135-min tests mated with normal males, but courtship was abnormal. Olfactory cues appeared to be important to females in recognizing the courting male, since antennaless females did not wing flick, were significantly more likely to take to flight as the result of the male brush display and frequently failed to retract the pheromone gland during the latter states of courtship. Background

Members of the subfamily Galleriinae have adapted to different selective environmental pressures by devising a unique mating process. Galleriinae males initiate mating by attracting females with either chemical or acoustic signals (or a combination of both modalities). Six compounds considered candidates for the sex pheromone have recently been identified in the wing gland extracts of Aphomia sociella males. Prior to the present study, acoustic communication had not been investigated. Signals mediating female attraction were likewise unknown.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Observations of A. sociella mating behaviour and recordings of male acoustic signals confirmed that males initiate the mating process. During calling behaviour (stationary wing fanning and pheromone release), males disperse pheromone from their wing glands. When a female approaches, males cease calling and begin to produce ultrasonic songs as part of the courtship behaviour. Replaying of recorded courting songs to virgin females and a comparison of the mating efficiency of intact males with males lacking tegullae proved that male ultrasonic signals stimulate females to accept mating. Greenhouse experiments with isolated pheromone glands confirmed that the male sex pheromone mediates long-range female attraction.

Conclusion/Significance

Female attraction in A. sociella is chemically mediated, but ultrasonic communication is also employed during courtship. Male ultrasonic songs stimulate female sexual display and significantly affect mating efficiency. Considerable inter-individual differences in song structure exist. These could play a role in female mate selection provided that the female''s ear is able to discern them. The A. sociella mating strategy described above is unique within the subfamily Galleriinae.  相似文献

Although most bird species show monogamous pair bonds and bi‐parental care, little is known of how mated birds coordinate their activities. Whether or not partners communicate with each other to adjust their behaviour remains an open question. During incubation and the first days after hatching, one parent – generally the female – stays in the nest for extended periods, and might depend on acoustic communication to exchange information with its mate outside. The Great Tit Parus major is an interesting study system to investigate intra‐pair communication at the nest because males address songs to their mate while she is in the nest cavity, and females answer the male from the cavity with calls. However, the function of this communication remains unknown. In this study, we recorded the vocalizations and observed the resulting behaviour of Great Tit pairs around the nest at different breeding stages (laying, incubation and chick‐rearing). We observed vocal exchanges (vocalization bouts, alternated on the same tempo, between the female inside the nest and her male outside) in three contexts with different outcomes: (1) the female left the nest, (2) the male entered the box with food, and the female then used specific call types, (3) mates stopped calling but did not leave or enter the nest. The structure of vocal exchanges was globally stable between contexts, but females used calls with an up‐shifted spectrum during exchanges, at the end of which they left the nest or the male entered the nest. Birds vocalized more and at higher tempo during exchanges that ended up in feeding inside the nest. Birds also vocalized more during exchanges taking place during laying – a period of active mate guarding – than during incubation. We conclude that vocal exchanges could signal the females’ need for food and the males’ mate guarding behaviour, and discuss other possible functions of this communication.  相似文献

One of the most important factors shaping animal sex-roles is the operational sex ratio, since a skew of this ratio promotes mating competition in the more abundant sex. In this study, we wanted to see if a change in sex-roles, related to an environmental induced change in operational sex ratio, could be demonstrated in a field situation. Common goby ( Pomatoschistus microps ) males build nests under bivalve shells and provide exclusive parental care. Therefore, available nest sites are crucial for successful breeding in this species and should also affect the operational sex ratio. We addressed the question of whether the availability of nest sites, through an effect on the operational sex ratio, affects courtship and mating competition in the common goby. We increased nest site availability in the field by adding potential nest material (bivalve shells) to one location. We then compared the reproductive behaviour of the gobies at this and another location with lower nest site abundance. In general, the reproductive behaviour differed as predicted. Under nest shortage, males occupied new nests and received eggs faster than under nest excess. Behavioural observations of nests revealed that males initiated courtship more often than females where nest sites were abundant, whereas female courtship dominated where nests were scarce. Males more often rejected females attempting to enter their nests under nest shortage, male sneaking attempts were also more common in this bay. Male-male aggression was frequent at both locations, whereas agonistic interactions between females only occurred in the nest shortage bay. Thus, males should be subject to sexual selection in both bays even though courtship roles differed. These results suggest that nest site availability affects mating competition and courtship roles in the common goby.  相似文献

The male sand gobies calls and spawns inside cavities beneath stones, shells and other submerged objects (including artificial shelters) which he covers by piling sand on them. A previous study showed fish shelters likely act as impedance-matching devices enhancing sound frequencies below 500 Hz. This study examines the effect of the sand pile on sound amplification by shelters commonly used by Mediterranean sand gobies as nest sites in the field (bivalve shells, pebbles), or within aquarium tanks (tunnel-shaped plastic tiles, halves of clay flower-pots). Shelters were acoustically stimulated with white noise and artificial pulse-trains emitted by a small underwater buzzer placed inside the cavity. Results showed the sand pile increased the low-frequency gain by up to 12 dB. Conclusions were verified by examining the role of natural sand builds in sound amplification using data from a previous laboratory study on sound production in the male sand goby P. minutus. Implications for acoustic communication in sand gobies are discussed.  相似文献

Two freshwater gobies Padogobius martensii and Gobius nigricans live in shallow (5-70 cm) stony streams, and males of both species produce courtship sounds. A previous study demonstrated high noise levels near waterfalls, a quiet window in the noise around 100 Hz at noisy locations, and extremely short-range propagation of noise and goby signals. To investigate the relationship of this acoustic environment to communication, we determined audiograms for both species and measured parameters of courtship sounds produced in the streams. We also deflated the swimbladder in P. martensii to determine its effect on frequency utilization in sound production and hearing. Both species are maximally sensitive at 100 Hz and produce low-frequency sounds with main energy from 70 to 100-150 Hz. Swimbladder deflation does not affect auditory threshold or dominant frequency of courtship sounds and has no or minor effects on sound amplitude. Therefore, both species utilize frequencies for hearing and sound production that fall within the low-frequency quiet region, and the equivalent relationship between auditory sensitivity and maximum ambient noise levels in both species further suggests that ambient noise shapes hearing sensitivity.  相似文献

Courtship behaviour of two species of periodical cicadas, Magicicada septendecim and M. cassini, was studied in the field during the 1970, 1973, and 1974 emergences of these insects. In areas where both species were courting there were differences in both male and female courtship patterns, both in acoustic and behavioural components. Experiments with models showed that male M. septendecim were more likely to court crude models of females than were M. cassini males. When females were ‘courted’ with models that could imitate some of male courtship, they were more receptive when the models' ‘songs’ were those of conspecific males. Acoustic differences between species are probably used by females in mate selection, maintaining species separation even in areas where the two species overlap in both space and time.  相似文献

狼蛛科雄蛛附肢上多样化的饰装往往与求偶行为相偶联,这些特殊的饰装通常被认为是雌性选择的结果。拟环纹豹蛛Pardosa pseudoannulata,属狼蛛科豹蛛属,雄蛛触肢胫节密被白毛,跗舟密被黑毛,具有典型的性二型现象;同时,只有成熟的雄蛛才展现触肢黑白相间的毛饰物。推测拟环纹豹蛛雄蛛触肢这种黑白相间的毛饰物可能在物种识别中具重要作用。在室内我们拟通过涂抹操作对拟环纹豹蛛雄蛛触肢黑白相间毛饰物的功能进行分析。实验分为4组,分别是对照组(A组,雄蛛不做任何处理)、雄蛛触肢白色胫节全部涂成黑色(B组)、雄蛛触肢黑色跗舟全部涂成白色(C组)和雄蛛触肢的黑色跗舟被涂成黑色(D组),然后采用雌雄配对进行求偶交配行为测定。实验结果表明,B组雄蛛的交配成功率显著低于A、C和D组的雄蛛,而后3组雄蛛的交配成功率无显著差异。相反,B组雄蛛被雌蛛相食百分率显著高于其它3组。可见拟环纹豹蛛雄蛛触肢上黑白相间毛饰物,尤其是其胫节上的白色饰物在雌蛛种间识别中起重要作用。  相似文献
