We asked whether, during the postnatal period, the daily patterns of body temperature (Tb), heart rate (HR) and breathing frequency (f) begin and develop in synchrony. To this end, measurements of HR, f and Tb were performed weekly, on two consecutive days, for the first two postnatal months on puppies of three breeds of dogs (Rottweiler, Cocker Spaniel and Carlino dogs) with very different birth weights and postnatal growth patterns. Ambient conditions and feeding habits were constant for all puppies. The results indicated that (1) the 24-h average Tb increased and average HR and f decreased with growth, (2) the daily rhythms in Tb were apparent by 4 weeks, irrespective of the puppy’s growth pattern, (3) the daily rhythm of Tb in the puppy was not necessarily following that of the mother; in fact, it could anticipate it. (4) The daily rhythms in HR and f were not apparent for the whole study period. We conclude that in neonatal dogs the onset of the daily rhythms of Tb has no obvious relationship with body size or rate of growth and is not cued by the maternal Tb rhythm. The daily rhythms of HR and f do not appear before 2 months of age. Hence, they are not in synchrony with those of Tb.  相似文献

Using in vivo–flushed oocytes from a homogenous dog population and subsequent embryo transfer after nuclear transfer, we studied the effects of donor cells collected from 10 different breeds on cloning efficiency and perinatal development of resulted cloned puppies. The breeds were categorized into four groups according to their body weight: small (≤9 kg), medium (>9–20 kg), large (>20–40 kg), and ultra large (>40 kg). A total of 1611 cloned embryos were transferred into 454 surrogate bitches for production of cloned puppies. No statistically significant differences were observed for initial pregnancy rates at Day 30 of embryo transfer for the donor cells originated from different breeds. However, full-term pregnancy rates were 16.5%, 11.0%, 10.0%, and 7.1% for the donor cells originated from ultra-large breed, large, medium, and small breeds, respectively, where pregnancy rate in the ultra-large group was significantly higher compared with the small breeds (P < 0.01). Perinatal mortality until weaning was significantly higher in small breeds (33.3%) compared with medium, large, or ultra-large breeds where no mortality was observed. The mean birth weight of cloned pups significantly increased proportional to breed size. The highest litter size was examined in ultra-large breeds. There was no correlation between the number of embryo transferred and litter size. Taken together, the efficiency of somatic cell cloning and fetal survival after embryo transfer may be affected significantly by selecting the appropriate genotype.  相似文献

Canine perinatal mortality is known to be relatively high. However, the literature on perinatal mortality in dogs is still sparse and often refers to a single or only a few breeds. The aim of this large-scale observational study was to describe the perinatal mortality in purebred dogs of various breeds at both puppy and litter level. In addition, the influence of breed, breed size, litter size, age of the bitch, litter number and season for whelping on the risk of perinatal mortality at litter level was studied and the mean litter size at eight days and eight wks after birth was calculated. A retrospective cohort study was performed by studying 10,810 litters of 224 breeds registered in the Norwegian Kennel Club in 2006 and 2007. Perinatal mortality was defined as the sum of stillborn puppies and puppies that died during the first wk after birth (early neonatal mortality) and was present in 24.6% of the litters. Eight percent of the puppies died before eight days after birth, with 4.3% as stillbirth and 3.7% as early neonatal mortality. For most breeds the perinatal mortality was low, but for some breeds a higher perinatal mortality was found. The mean litter size at eight days and eight wks after birth was 4.97 (±0.02) and 4.92 (±0.02) puppies, respectively. Of all puppies born, only 1% died during the period from eight days to eight wks after birth. Random effects logistic regression analysis indicated that increasing litter size and age of the bitch were associated with an increased risk of stillbirth, early neonatal mortality and total perinatal mortality at the litter level (P < 0.001). The random breed effect was significant for all outcomes. Litter number also had a significant effect on stillbirth, early neonatal mortality and total perinatal mortality at the litter level, with the highest risk of perinatal mortality found in the first litter (P < 0.001). Further, the risk of early neonatal mortality was doubled in litters with stillborn puppies. No significant effect of whelping season on perinatal mortality at litter level was found. An interaction existed between the age of the bitch and litter number and the risk of stillbirth was three times as high (odds ratio = 3.00) in litters from bitches having their first litter after the age of six y. Breed was a more important determinant of perinatal mortality in litters than breed size. However, more than 90% of the variation in perinatal mortality was found at the individual litter level and efforts to minimize puppy mortality should be targeted at the management of the individual litter rather than at the breed level.  相似文献

Puppy assessments for companion dogs have shown mixed long-term reliability. Temperament is cited among the reasons for surrendering dogs to shelters. A puppy temperament test that reliably predicts adult behavior is one potential way to lower the number of dogs given to shelters. This study used a longitudinal design to assess temperament in puppies from 8 different breeds at 7 weeks old (n = 52) and 6 years old (n = 34) using modified temperament tests, physiological measures, and a follow-up questionnaire. For 7-week-old puppies, results revealed (a) puppy breed was predictable using 3 variables, (b) 4 American Kennel Club breed groups had some validity based on temperament, (c) temperament was variable within litters of puppies, and (d) certain measures of temperament were related to physiological measures (heart rate). Finally, puppy temperament assessments were reliable in predicting the scores of 2 of the 8 adult dog temperament measures. However, overall, the puppy temperament scores were unreliable in predicting adult temperament.  相似文献

Despite the long history of purebred dogs and the large number of existing breeds, few studies of canine litter size based upon a large number of breeds exist. Previous studies are either old or include only one or a few selected breeds. The aim of this large-scale retrospective study was to estimate the mean litter size in a large population of purebred dogs and to describe some factors that might influence the litter size. A total of 10,810 litters of 224 breeds registered in the Norwegian Kennel Club from 2006 to 2007 were included in the study. The overall mean litter size at birth was 5.4 (± 0.025). A generalized linear mixed model with a random intercept for breed revealed that the litter size was significantly influenced by the size of the breed, the method of mating and the age of the bitch. A significant interaction between breed size and age was detected, in that the expected number of puppies born decreased more for older bitches of large breeds. Mean litter size increased with breed size, from 3.5 (± 0.04) puppies in miniature breeds to 7.1 (± 0.13) puppies in giant breeds. No effect on litter size was found for the season of birth or the parity of the bitch. The large number of breeds and the detail of the registered information on the litters in this study are unique. In conclusion, the size of the breed, the age of the bitch and the method of mating were found to influence litter size in purebred dogs when controlling for breed, with the size of the breed as the strongest determinant.  相似文献

Whereas hundreds of breeds of domestic dogs are known, only several dozen domestic cat breeds are currently recognized, and the ferret is not classified into specific breeds. We studied pre- and postnatal patterns of development and growth in the domesticated forms of these three carnivoran species. We present the most comprehensive staging system for domestic dog embryos to date and define qualitative characters for phylogenetic comparisons. For postnatal development, we present analyses of new and literature measurements of cranial and limb proportions. We analyze changes in the progress of growth among different domestic dog and domestic cat breeds. All three domesticated forms drastically differ in the relative timing of prenatal development. This is correlated with ontogenetic plasticity at birth, which enables artificial selection to act. For postnatal development, we detected a greater shape variance in domestic dog ontogeny when compared to that of the domestic cat. We conclude that ontogenetic preconditions as well as body size constrain the species’ capability for artificial selection in domestic dogs and cats. However, we speculate that the human requirements for functional performance of their domesticates might render some developmental biases substantially. Although ferrets would be preferable for artificial selection given their plastic embryonic development, they have been of less interest for domestication due to their small body size - by which they were already well adapted for hunting in burrows - and due to the fact that other relevant tasks were already assumed by domestic cats and dogs since earlier phases of human cultural evolution.  相似文献

Using 27 body measurements, we have identified 13 breed-defining metrics for 109 of 159 domestic dog breeds, most of which are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The data set included 1,155 dogs at least 1 year old (average 5.4 years), and for 53 breed populations, complete measurement data were collected from at least three males and three females. We demonstrate, first, that AKC breed standards are rigorously adhered to for most domestic breeds with little variation observed within breeds. Second, Rensch’s rule, which describes a scaling among taxa such that sexual dimorphism is greater among larger species if males are the larger sex, with less pronounced differences in male versus female body size in smaller species, is not maintained in domestic dog breeds because the proportional size difference between males and females of small and large breeds is essentially the same. Finally, principal components (PCs) analysis describes both the overall body size (PC1) and the shape (length versus width) of the skeleton (PC2). That the integrity of the data set is sufficiently rich to discern PCs has strong implications for mapping studies, suggesting that individual measurements may not be needed for genetic studies of morphologic traits, particularly in the case of breed-defining traits that are typically under strong selection. Rather, phenotypes derived from data sets such as these, collected at a fraction of the effort and cost, may be used to direct whole-genome association studies aimed at understanding the genetic basis of fixed morphologic phenotypes defining distinct dog breeds.

Background

Rhythmicity in core body temperature has been extensively studied in humans and laboratory animals but much less in farm animals. Extending the study of rhythmicity of body temperature to farm animals is important not only from a comparative perspective but also from an economic perspective, as greater knowledge of this process can lead to improvements in livestock production practices. In this study in cattle, we investigated the maturation of the daily rhythm of body temperature in newborn calves, characterized the parameters of the daily rhythm in young cows, and studied the oscillation in body temperature associated with the estrous cycle in adult cows.

Results

We found that the daily rhythm of body temperature is absent at birth but matures fully during the first two months of life. The mature rhythm had a mean level of 38.3°C, a range of excursion of 1.4°C, and was more robust than that of any mammalian species previously studied (90% of maximal robustness). Sexually mature cows also exhibited a robust estrous rhythm of body temperature. An elevation of about 1.3°C was observed every 21 days on the day of estrus. Small seasonal variations in this pattern were observed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, calves exhibit a very robust daily rhythm of body temperature, although this rhythm is absent at birth and develops during the first two months of life. Adult cows exhibit also 21-day rhythmicity in body temperature reflecting the duration of the estrous cycle.

采用旷场行为测试方法, 测定204条德国牧羊犬、拉布拉多犬、史宾格犬二月龄幼犬在新异环境下的兴奋性和探索活动, 同时应用RFLP-PCR方法检测单胺氧化酶B(Monoamine Oxidase B, MAOB)基因的多态性, 分析MAOB基因的基因型和基因频率在品种间的分布差异以及基因多态性与旷场测验中行为参数的相互关系, 发现MAOB基因型频率与基因频率在犬品种之间差异极显著(P<0.01), MAOB基因型与幼犬在旷场中的走动时间、趴卧时间、跨格次数、站立扒墙次数有关(P<0.01或P<0.05), 对运动姿势改变次数也有一定影响(P=0.064)。其中, TT基因型犬的走动时间和跨格次数均高于TC型和CC型犬(P<0.05), 运动姿势改变次数和站立扒墙次数高于CC型犬(P<0.05); 而CC型个体的趴卧时间高于TT型个体(P<0.05)。MAOB基因对走动时间和跨格次数的加性遗传效应达极显著(P<0.01), 对运动姿势改变次数、站立扒墙次数和趴卧时间有显著的加性效应(P<0.05)。实验结果表明, MAOB基因与幼犬在旷场测验中的运动、兴奋性和探索活动有关, TT基因型对运动、兴奋性和探索活动具有正遗传效应。  相似文献

Most research on dog communication has focused on either the use of lupine signals during intra-specific interactions or has studied single-breed groups, with little regard to the effects of morphological change in the dog on their communication. This oversight ignores the fact that most modern dog breeds do not resemble the wolf and thus they have lost the ability to send some signals and may encounter communication problems. Using puppies in 40 litters from 32 breeds, we investigated the relationship between the frequencies of behaviours (social signals), and the adult morphology of these dogs. Despite a high level of precision, no statistically significant relationships were found between the deviation of the adult morphology from the ancestral lupine morphotype and early social signalling in the dog. We concluded that any communication loss due to morphological deviation, is not compensated for by increasing the frequency of signalling behaviours at this age.  相似文献

Circadian rhythmicity of physiological processes in animals has been described for some variables. In order to investigate the daily rhythmicity of blood pressure, seven foals (Equus caballus) were used for 40 days after birth. Measurements of blood pressure were done by means of an oscillometric apparatus (Argus TM-7, Schiller, Barr Switzerland) with the foals in a standing position and the cuff placed around the tail. Blood pressure was recorded twice a day, 1 hour before dawn and 1 hour before dusk for the first 10 days of life, every 2 days from the 11th to the 32nd day, on the 36th and on the 40th day. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to determine statistically significant differences between the mean values recorded at dawn and dusk during the study. Analysis of variance showed a significant effect of time (p<0.0001), during the first 40 days of life. This study confirms a strong correlation between age and blood pressure in horse and the absence of blood pressure maturation in foals 40 days old. The results on the maturation of the daily rhythm of blood pressure in foals is a contribution to the study of the development of circadian rhythms in mammals. These results are also useful for the chronophysiological assessment of blood pressure in the horse.  相似文献

In experiments on guinea pigs, cats, and rats of different ages, from newborns to adults, the postural and stato-kinetic reflexes were studied with subsequent recording of electrical activity of identified cerebellar Purkinje cells (PC) in the same animals. Simultaneously in same age group of the animals, a morphometrical study of the shape and size of Purkinje cells and their nuclei was carried out. The first signs of manifestation of reflexes of standing and of the support reaction were observed in mature-born guinea pigs as early as at the first day after birth. At this time the PC fire has an irregular and low-frequency character with long inhibitory pauses and a great dispersion of the frequency-time characteristics. In the course of postnatal ontogenesis the parameter of the ratio of frequencies of simple and complex spikes increased in all the studied animals, guinea pigs, rat puppies, and kittens, but to different degrees. The complete maturation of the PC activity in the mature-born guinea pigs took 3–4 weeks after birth, whereas in the immature-born rat puppies and kittens this process took, on average, 5–6 and 8–9 weeks, respectively. By this time, all the studied postural-motor reactions were formed. The comparison of the course of formation of the frequency-time characteristics of the Purkinje cell activity in mature- (guinea pigs) and immature-born (rats and cats) animals allowed establishing that the highest rate of maturation of the Purkinje cell activity in the mature-born animals is observed during the first half, whereas in immature-born animals, during the second half of postnatal ontogenesis. A similar rate of changes also took place at maturation of postural-motor reflexes. The complete functional maturity of the Purkinje cell occurred, as a rule, at the time period when the shape and size of the Purkinje cell body became close to the definitive ones, and their vertical and horizontal diameters reached the values characteristic of adult animals.  相似文献

The intracellular sodium and potassium concentrations and membrane transport properties for these ions were investigated in red blood cells from newborn puppies and adult dogs. At birth the intracellular concentrations of sodium and potassium are much higher than those found in adult dog red cells. During the first few weeks of life the intracellular concentrations of these ions gradually decrease until the adult level is reached. Changes in the membrane transport properties develop concurrently. The rate of active potassium influx, as measured by ouabain-sensitivity, and the pump to leak ratio are greater in red cells from newborn puppies than in those from adult animals. No ouabain-sensitive sodium efflux could be demonstrated in red cells from older puppies or adult dogs. When either puppy or adult dog red cells are depleted of ATP (by incubation at 37°C with no substrate), potassium permeability increases, and the permeability of the membrane to sodium decreases. The addition of adenosine reverses the effect of depletion.  相似文献

Background

The tendency for male-larger sexual size dimorphism (SSD) to scale with body size – a pattern termed Rensch''s rule – has been empirically supported in many animal lineages. Nevertheless, its theoretical elucidation is a subject of debate. Here, we exploited the extreme morphological variability of domestic dog (Canis familiaris) to gain insights into evolutionary causes of this rule.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We studied SSD and its allometry among 74 breeds ranging in height from less than 19 cm in Chihuahua to about 84 cm in Irish wolfhound. In total, the dataset included 6,221 individuals. We demonstrate that most dog breeds are male-larger, and SSD in large breeds is comparable to SSD of their wolf ancestor. Among breeds, SSD becomes smaller with decreasing body size. The smallest breeds are nearly monomorphic.

Conclusions/Significance

SSD among dog breeds follows the pattern consistent with Rensch''s rule. The variability of body size and corresponding changes in SSD among breeds of a domestic animal shaped by artificial selection can help to better understand processes leading to emergence of Rensch''s rule.  相似文献

Suppressor of cytokine signaling 2 (SOCS2) is a negative regulator of growth hormone signaling. The deletion of SOCS2 in mice results in a 30-50% increase in post-natal growth. In an effort to identify polymorphisms in the SOCS2 gene that may be associated with body size in dogs, we characterized the canine SOCS2 gene and analyzed its genetic diversity among small and large dog breeds. The study was carried out on a total of 520 dogs from 66 different breeds. Dogs were classified as large or small based on height and weight as determined by their respective American Kennel Club breed standards. The SH2 and SOCS domains of the canine SOCS2 gene were sequenced in 32 dogs from different breeds. Only one non-synonymous sequence variant (DQ415457:g.326G>T) was detected which corresponds to an amino acid change (Asp127Tyr). All samples were genotyped by PCR/RFLP and the allele frequencies were determined for each dog breed. The T allele was distributed primarily among European large dog breeds with a gene frequency ranging from 0.72 to 0.04. The nature of the nucleotide change and the effect on the protein together with the finding of a QTL related to body size in the same CFA15 region by other researchers suggest canine SOCS2 as a potential candidate gene for body size in dogs. Future studies will be needed to clarify the role of the 326G>T polymorphism and its interaction with genes like growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1.  相似文献

In fluctuating environmental temperature, homeotherms are able to maintain stable their body temperature, which however reveals a rhythmic daily pattern as described in literature. Because of the importance of body temperature rhythmicity in the knowledge of thermal homeostasis and as a means to facilitate the study of biological rhythmicity in general, the aim of our study was to assess the influence of two different ambient temperature on the daily rhythmicity of body and auricle temperature in goat (Capra hircus). For our study 6 female adult Maltese goats (18 month old), not pregnant and clinically healthy were used. On each subject body and auricle temperature was recorded during two different periods, of 7 days each, every 3 hours for 24 hours from 07.00 to 04.00, at different environmental temperature (1st period 18.25 ± 1.48°C, 2nd period 28.25 ± 2.05°C). The analysis of the obtained result under two ambient temperature indicates the existence of a daily periodicity, with small differences in amplitude and acrophase between the two studied period, both in body and auricle temperature in Maltese breed goat so we can assume that environmental temperature can influence in a significant way the daily pattern of body and auricle temperature.  相似文献

Domestic dogs exhibit tremendous phenotypic diversity, including a greater variation in body size than any other terrestrial mammal. Here, we generate a high density map of canine genetic variation by genotyping 915 dogs from 80 domestic dog breeds, 83 wild canids, and 10 outbred African shelter dogs across 60,968 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Coupling this genomic resource with external measurements from breed standards and individuals as well as skeletal measurements from museum specimens, we identify 51 regions of the dog genome associated with phenotypic variation among breeds in 57 traits. The complex traits include average breed body size and external body dimensions and cranial, dental, and long bone shape and size with and without allometric scaling. In contrast to the results from association mapping of quantitative traits in humans and domesticated plants, we find that across dog breeds, a small number of quantitative trait loci (≤3) explain the majority of phenotypic variation for most of the traits we studied. In addition, many genomic regions show signatures of recent selection, with most of the highly differentiated regions being associated with breed-defining traits such as body size, coat characteristics, and ear floppiness. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of mapping multiple traits in the domestic dog using a database of genotyped individuals and highlight the important role human-directed selection has played in altering the genetic architecture of key traits in this important species.  相似文献

The degree and/or direction of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) varies considerably among species and among populations within species. Although this variation is in part genetically based, much of it is probably due to the sexes exhibiting differences in body size plasticity. Here, we use the hawkmoth, Manduca sexta, to test the hypothesis that moths reared on different diet qualities and at different temperatures will exhibit sex-specific body size plasticity. In addition, we explore the proximate mechanisms that potentially create sex-specific plasticity by examining three physiological variables known to regulate body size in this insect: the growth rate, the critical weight (which measures the cessation of juvenile hormone secretion from the corpora allata) and the interval to cessation of growth (ICG; which measures the time interval between the critical weight and the secretion of the ecdysteroids that regulate pupation and metamorphosis). We found that peak larval mass of males and females did not exhibit sex-specific plasticity in response to diet or temperature. However, the sexes did exhibit sex-specific plasticity in the mechanism that controls size; males and females exhibited sex-specific plasticity in the growth rate and the critical weight in response to both diet and temperature, whereas the ICG only exhibited sex-specific plasticity in response to diet. Our results suggest it is important for the sexes to maintain the same degree of SSD across environments and that this is accomplished by the sexes exhibiting differential sensitivity of the physiological factors that determine body size to environmental variation.  相似文献

Daily or circadian oscillation has been documented in a variety of physiological and behavioral processes. Although individual variables have been studied in great detail, very few studies have been conducted on the temporal relationships between the rhythms of different variables. It is not known whether the circadian pacemaker generates each and every rhythm individually or whether most rhythms are simply derived from a few clock-controlled rhythms. As a first step in elucidating this issue, 21 physiological variables were recorded simultaneously in horse and sheep. The results indicated that, in both species, different variables exhibit different degrees of daily rhythmicity and reach their daily peaks at different times of the day. The variables exhibiting strongest rhythmicity were locomotor activity, rectal temperature, and plasma concentrations of melatonin and glucose. Comparison of rhythmicity and acrophase in the various rhythms allowed inferences to be made about mechanisms of causation.  相似文献
