The role of vacancy defects is demonstrated to be positive in various energy‐related processes. However, introducing vacancy defects into single‐crystalline nanostructures with given facets and studying their defect effect on electrocatalytic properties remains a great challenge. Here this study deliberately introduces oxygen defects into single‐crystalline ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets with O‐terminated {111} facets by mild solvothermal reduction using ethylene glycol under alkaline condition. As‐prepared defect‐rich Co3O4 nanosheets show a low overpotential of 220 mV with a small Tafel slope of 49.1 mV dec?1 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is among the best Co‐based OER catalysts to date and even more active than the state‐of‐the‐art IrO2 catalyst. Such vacancy defects are formed by balancing with reducing environments under solvothermal conditions, but are surprisingly stable even after 1000 cycles of scanning under OER working conditions. Density functional theory plus U calculation attributes the enhanced performance to the oxygen vacancies and consequently exposed second‐layered Co metal sites, which leads to the lowered OER activation energy of 2.26 eV and improved electrical conductivity. This mild solvothermal reduction concept opens a new door for the understanding and future designing of advanced defect‐based electrocatalysts.  相似文献

The overriding obstacle to mass production of hydrogen from water as the premium fuel for powering our planet is the frustratingly slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Additionally, inadequate understanding of the key barriers of the OER is a hindrance to insightful design of advanced OER catalysts. This study presents ultrathin amorphous high‐surface area nickel boride (Nix B) nanosheets as a low‐cost, very efficient and stable catalyst for the OER for electrochemical water splitting. The catalyst affords 10 mA cm?2 at 0.38 V overpotential during OER in 1.0 m KOH, reducing to only 0.28 V at 20 mA cm?2 when supported on nickel foam, which ranks it among the best reported nonprecious catalysts for oxygen evolution. Operando X‐ray absorption fine‐structure spectroscopy measurements reveal prevalence of NiOOH, as well as Ni‐B under OER conditions, owing to a Ni‐B core@nickel oxyhydroxide shell (Ni‐B@NiOx H) structure, and increase in disorder of the NiOx H layer, thus revealing important insight into the transient states of the catalyst during oxygen evolution.  相似文献

Hierarchically organized porous carbonized‐Co3O4 inverse opal nanostructures (C‐Co3O4 IO) are synthesized via complementary colloid and block copolymer self‐assembly, where the triblock copolymer Pluronic P123 acts as the template and the carbon source. These highly ordered porous inverse opal nanostructures with high surface area display synergistic properties of high energy density and promising bifunctional electrocatalytic activity toward both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It is found that the as‐made C‐Co3O4 IO/Ketjen Black (KB) composite exhibits remarkably enhanced electrochemical performance, such as increased specific capacity (increase from 3591 to 6959 mA h g?1), lower charge overpotential (by 284.4 mV), lower discharge overpotential (by 19.0 mV), and enhanced cyclability (about nine times higher than KB in charge cyclability) in Li–O2 battery. An overall agreement is found with both C‐Co3O4 IO/KB and Co3O4 IO/KB in ORR and OER half‐cell tests using a rotating disk electrode. This enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to the porous structure with highly dispersed carbon moiety intact with the host Co3O4 catalyst.  相似文献

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of prime importance in multiple energy storage devices. Perovskite oxides involving lattice‐oxygen oxidation are generally regarded as highly active OER catalysts, but the deprotonation of surface‐bound intermediates limit the further activity improvement. Here, it is shown that this kinetic limitation can be removed by introducing Sr3B2O6 (SB) which activates a proton‐acceptor functionality to boost OER activity. As a proof‐of‐concept example, an experimental validation is conducted on the extraordinary OER performance of a Sr(Co0.8Fe0.2)0.7B0.3O3?δ (SCFB‐0.3) hybrid catalyst, made using Sr0.8Co0.8Fe0.2O3?δ as active component and SB as a proton acceptor. This smart hybrid exhibits an exceptionally ultrahigh OER activity with an extremely low overpotential of 340 mV in 0.1 m KOH and 240 mV in 1 m KOH required for 10 mA cm?2 which is the top‐level catalytic activity among metal oxides reported so far, while maintaining excellent durability. The correlation of pH and activity study reveals that this enhanced activity mainly originates from the improved interfacial proton transfer. Such a strategy further demonstrated to be universal, which can be applied to enhance the OER activity of other high covalent oxides with close O 2p‐band centers relative to Fermi energy.  相似文献

A novel hybrid of small core@shell structured CoSx@Cu2MoS4 uniformly hybridizing with a molybdenum dichalcogenide/N,S‐codoped graphene hetero‐network (CoSx@Cu2MoS4‐MoS2/NSG) is prepared by a facile route. It shows excellent performance toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline medium. The hybrid exhibits rapid kinetics for ORR with high electron transfer number of ≈3.97 and exciting durability superior to commercial Pt/C. It also demonstrates great potential with remarkable stability for HER and OER, requiring low overpotential of 118.1 and 351.4 mV, respectively, to reach a current density of 10 mA cm?2. An electrolyzer based on CoSx@Cu2MoS4‐MoS2/NSG produces low cell voltage of 1.60 V and long‐term stability, surpassing a device of Pt/C + RuO2/C. In addition, a Zn‐air battery using cathodic CoSx@Cu2MoS4‐MoS2/NSG catalyst delivers a high cell voltage of ≈1.44 V and a power density of 40 mW cm?2 at 58 mA cm?2, better than the state‐of‐the‐art Pt/C catalyst. These achievements are due to the rational combination of highly active core@shell CoSx@Cu2MoS4 with large‐area and high‐porosity MoS2/NSG to produce unique physicochemical properties with multi‐integrated active centers and synergistic effects. The outperformances of such catalyst suggest an advanced candidate for multielectrocatalysis applications in metal‐air batteries and hydrogen production.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that amorphous cobalt boride (Co2B) prepared by the chemical reduction of CoCl2 using NaBH4 is an exceptionally efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolytes and is simultaneously active for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm?2 at 1.61 V on an inert support and at 1.59 V when impregnated with nitrogen‐doped graphene. Stable performance is maintained at 10 mA cm?2 for at least 60 h. The optimized catalyst, Co2B annealed at 500 °C (Co2B‐500) evolves oxygen more efficiently than RuO2 and IrO2, and its performance matches the best cobalt‐based catalysts reported to date. Co2B is irreversibly oxidized at OER conditions to form a CoOOH surface layer. The active form of the catalyst is therefore represented as CoOOH/Co2B. EXAFS observations indicate that boron induces lattice strain in the crystal structure of the metal, which potentially diminishes the thermodynamic and kinetic barrier of the hydroxylation reaction, formation of the OOH* intermediate, a key limiting step in the OER.  相似文献

Efficient bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are of great importance for rechargeable metal–air batteries. Herein, FeNx/C catalysts are synthesized by pyrolysis of thiourea and agarose containing α‐Fe2O3 nanoplate as Fe precursor, where α‐Fe2O3 nanoplate can prevent the aggregation of carbon sheets to effectively improve the specific surface area during the carbonization process. The FeNx/C‐700‐20 catalyst displays excellent catalytic performance for both ORR and OER activity in alkaline conditions with more positive onset potential (1.1 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode) and half‐wave potential, higher stability, and stronger methanol tolerance in alkaline solution, which are all superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. In this study, the detailed analyses demonstrate that the coexistence of Fe‐based species and high content of Fe‐Nx both play an important role for the catalytic activity. Furthermore, FeNx/C‐700‐20 as cathode catalyst in Zn–air battery possesses higher charge–discharge stability and power density compared with that of commercial Pt/C catalyst, displaying great potential in practical implementation of for the rechargeable energy devices.  相似文献

Earth‐abundant amorphous nanomaterials with rich structural defects are promising alternative catalysts to noble metals for an efficient electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction; however, their inferior electrical conductivity and poor morphological control during synthesis hamper the full realization of their potency in electrocatalysis. Herein, a rapid surface‐guided synthetic approach is proposed to introduce amorphous and mixed‐metal oxyhydroxide overlayers on ultrathin Ni‐doped MnO2 (Ni? MnO2) nanosheet arrays via a galvanic replacement mechanism. This method results in a monolithic 3D porous catalyst with a small overpotential of only 232 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm?2 in 1 m KOH, which is much lower than the corresponding value of 307 mV for the Ni? MnO2 reference sample. Detailed structural and electrochemical characterization reveal that the unique Ni? MnO2 ultrathin nanosheet arrays do not only provide a large surface area to guide the formation of active amorphous catalyst layers but also ensure the effective charge transport owing to their high electron conductivity, collectively contributing to the greatly improved catalyst activity. It is envisioned that this highly operable surface‐guide synthetic strategy may open up new avenues for the design and fabrication of novel 3D nanoarchitectures integrated with functional amorphous materials for broadened ranges of applications.  相似文献

Perovskite oxide ceramics attracts significant attention as a strong candidate of bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst for the metal‐air batteries. Numerous approaches to the viability of bifunctional perovskite electrocatalyst represent that the electrochemical performance is highly correlated with defect chemistry, surface structure, and overall polycrystalline perovskite structure. By making use of the intrinsic flexibility of internal structure and high nonstoichiometry in perovskite oxide, the heat treatment effect of the complex Ba0.5Sr0.5CoxFe1‐xO3‐δ (x = 0.2 and 0.8) perovskites in argon atmosphere at 950 °C (Ar‐BSCF5582 and Ar‐BSCF5528) on the surface structure/defect chemistry and electrocatalytic performance is intensively investigated. Upon heat‐treatment in argon atmosphere, the amorphous thickness layer increases from ≈20 to 180–200 nm in BSCF5582, while there is little change in BSCF5528 with ≈20 nm. The electrocatalytic performance of BSCF5582 catalyst both in ORR and OER deteriorates seriously, while Ar‐BSCF5528 demonstrates a significant increase of electrochemical performance in ORR. This study demonstrates that the electrochemical performances of a perovskite catalyst can be significantly determined by the simultaneous modification of both surface structure and internal defect chemistry, which are explained with transmission electron microscopy and atomic‐selective X‐ray absorption fine structure analyses, respectively.  相似文献

While electrochemical water splitting is one of the most promising methods to store light/electrical energy in chemical bonds, a key challenge remains in the realization of an efficient oxygen evolution reaction catalyst with large surface area, good electrical conductivity, high catalytic properties, and low fabrication cost. Here, a facile solution reduction method is demonstrated for mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires treated with NaBH4. The high‐surface‐area mesopore feature leads to efficient surface reduction in solution at room temperature, which allows for retention of the nanowire morphology and 1D charge transport behavior, while at the same time substantially increasing the oxygen vacancies on the nanowire surface. Compared to pristine Co3O4 nanowires, the reduced Co3O4 nanowires exhibit a much larger current of 13.1 mA cm‐2 at 1.65 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a much lower onset potential of 1.52 V vs RHE. Electrochemical supercapacitors based on the reduced Co3O4 nanowires also show a much improved capacitance of 978 F g‐1 and reduced charge transfer resistance. Density‐functional theory calculations reveal that the existence of oxygen vacancies leads to the formation of new gap states in which the electrons previously associated with the Co‐O bonds tend to be delocalized, resulting in the much higher electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity.  相似文献

The ability to deposit conformal catalytic thin films enables opportunities to achieve complex nanostructured designs for catalysis. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is capable of creating conformal thin films over complex substrates. Here, ALD‐MnOx on glassy carbon is investigated as a catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), two reactions that are of growing interest due to their many applications in alternative energy technologies. The films are characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, and cyclic voltammetry. The as‐deposited films consist of Mn(II)O, which is shown to be a poor catalyst for the ORR, but highly active for the OER. By controllably annealing the samples, Mn2O3 catalysts with good activity for both the ORR and OER are synthesized. Hypotheses are presented to explain the large difference in the activity between the MnO and Mn2O3 catalysts for the ORR, but similar activity for the OER, including the effects of surface oxidation under experimental conditions. These catalysts synthesized though ALD compare favorably to the best MnOx catalysts in the literature, demonstrating a viable way to produce highly active, conformal thin films from earth‐abundant materials for the ORR and the OER.  相似文献

To arrive to sustainable hydrogen‐based energy solutions, the understanding of water‐splitting catalysts plays the most crucial role. Herein, state‐of‐the‐art hypotheses are combined on electrocatalytic active metal sites toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to develop a highly efficient catalyst based on Earth‐abundant cobalt and zinc oxides. The precursor catalyst Zn0.35Co0.65O is synthesized via a fast microwave‐assisted approach at low temperatures. Subsequently, it transforms in situ from the wurtzite structure to the layered γ‐Co(O)OH, while most of its zinc leaches out. This material shows outstanding catalytic performance and stability toward the OER in 1 m KOH (overpotential at 10 mA cm?2 ηinitial = 306 mV, η98 h = 318 mV). By comparing the electrochemical results and ex situ analyses to today's literature, clear structure‐activity correlations are able to be identified. The findings suggest that coordinately unsaturated cobalt octahedra on the surface are indeed the active centers for the OER.  相似文献

The development of efficient and robust earth‐abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an ongoing challenge. Here, a novel and stable trimetallic NiFeCr layered double hydroxide (LDH) electrocatalyst for improving OER kinetics is rationally designed and synthesized. Electrochemical testing of a series of trimetallic NiFeCr LDH materials at similar catalyst loading and electrochemical surface area shows that the molar ratio Ni:Fe:Cr = 6:2:1 exhibits the best intrinsic OER catalytic activity compared to other NiFeCr LDH compositions. Furthermore, these nanostructures are directly grown on conductive carbon paper for a high surface area 3D electrode that can achieve a catalytic current density of 25 mA cm?2 at an overpotential as low as 225 mV and a small Tafel slope of 69 mV dec?1 in alkaline electrolyte. The optimized NiFeCr catalyst is stable under OER conditions and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and elemental analysis confirm the stability of trimetallic NiFeCr LDH after electrochemical testing. Due to the synergistic interactions among the metal centers, trimetallic NiFeCr LDH is significantly more active than NiFe LDH and among the most active OER catalysts to date. This work also presents general strategies to design more efficient metal oxide/hydroxide OER electrocatalysts.  相似文献

Development of highly active and stable bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts from earth‐abundant elements remains a grand challenge for highly demanded reversible fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Carbon catalysts have many advantages over others due to their low cost, excellent electrical conductivity, high surface area, and easy functionalization. However, they typically cannot withstand the highly oxidative OER environment. Here, a new class of bifunctional electrocatalyst is reported, consisting of ultralarge sized nitrogen doped graphene tubes (N‐GTs) (>500 nm) decorated with FeCoNi alloy particles. These tubes are prepared from an inexpensive precursor, dicyandiamide, via a template‐free graphitization process. The ORR/OER activity and the stability of these graphene tube catalysts depend strongly on the transition metal precursors. The best performing FeCoNi‐derived N‐GT catalyst exhibits excellent ORR and OER activity along with adequate electrochemical durability over a wide potential window (0–1.9 V) in alkaline media. The measured OER current is solely due to desirable O2 evolution, rather than carbon oxidation. Extensive electrochemical and physical characterization indicated that high graphitization degree, thicker tube walls, proper nitrogen doping, and presence of FeCoNi alloy particles are vital for high bifunctional activity and electrochemical durability of tubular carbon catalysts.  相似文献

Achieving high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity while maintaining performance stability is a key challenge for designing perovskite structure oxide OER catalysts, which are often unstable in alkaline environments transforming into an amorphous phase. While the chemical and structural transformation occurring during electrolysis at the electrolyte–catalyst interface is now regarded as a crucial factor influencing OER activity, here, using La0.7Sr0.3CoO3?δ (LSCO) as an active OER catalyst, the critical influence of buried layers on the oxidation current stability in nanoscopically thin, chemically and structurally evolving, catalyst layers is revealed. The use of epitaxial thin films is demonstrated to engineer both depletion layer widths and chemical stability of the catalyst support structure resulting in heterostructured anodes that maintain facile transport kinetics across the electrolyte–anode interface for atomically thin (2–3 unit cells) LSCO catalyst layers and greatly enhanced oxidation current stability as the perovskite structure OER catalysts chemically and structurally transform. This work opens up an approach to design robust and active heterostructured anodes with dynamically evolving ultrathin OER electrocatalyst layers for future green fuel technologies such as conformal coatings of high‐density 3D anode topologies for water splitting.  相似文献

Bifunctional oxygen catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with high activities and low‐cost are of prime importance and challenging in the development of fuel cells and rechargeable metal–air batteries. This study reports a porous carbon nanomaterial loaded with cobalt nanoparticles (Co@NC‐x/y) derived from pyrolysis of a Co/Zn bimetallic zeolitic imidazolite framework, which exhibits incredibly high activity as bifunctional oxygen catalysts. For instance, the optimal catalyst of Co@NC‐3/1 has the interconnected framework structure between porous carbon and embedded carbon nanotubes, which shows the superb ORR activity with onset potential of ≈1.15 V and half‐wave potential of ≈0.93 V. Moreover, it presents high OER activity that can be further enhanced to over commercial RuO2 by P‐doped with overpotentials of 1.57 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode at 10 mA cm?2 and long‐term stability for 2000 circles and a Tafel slope of 85 mV dec?1. Significantly, the nanomaterial demonstrates better catalytic performance and durability than Pt/C for ORR and commercial RuO2 and IrO2 for OER. These findings suggest the importance of a synergistic effect of graphitic carbon, nanotubes, exposed Co–Nx active sites, and interconnected framework structure of various carbons for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts.  相似文献

The controllable synthesis of single‐crystallized iron‐cobalt carbonate hydroxide nanosheets array on 3D conductive Ni foam (FCCH/NF) as a monolithic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) bifunctional electrocatalyst for full water splitting is described. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of Fe can effectively tune the morphology, composition, electronic structure, and electrochemical active surface area of the electrocatalysts, thus greatly enhancing the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. The optimal electrocatalyst (F0.25C1CH/NF) can deliver 10 and 1000 mA cm?2 at very small overpotentials of 77 and 256 mV for HER and 228 and 308 mV for OER in 1.0 m KOH without significant interference from gas evolution. The F0.25C1CH‐based two‐electrode alkaline water electrolyzer only requires cell voltages of 1.45 and 1.52 V to achieve current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm?2. The results demonstrate that such fascinating electrocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the increase in the catalytic active surface area, facilitated electron and mass transport properties, and the synergistic interactions because of the incorporation of Fe.  相似文献

The photosystem II (PSII) in green plants exhibits marvelous oxygen production in neutral environments. However, artificially developed oxygen evolution catalysts (OECs) show much less activity, and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is now becoming a bottleneck in many energy‐related issues. Here, the PSII is mimicked to design an efficient OER system in neutral environments by introducing an oleylamine (OAm) organic layer to cap the Co3O4 OEC, and employing buffers as proton shuttles in the system. Consequently, the activity is largely enhanced. The current density can reach 10 mA cm?2 at an overpotential (η) of 390 mV in the best case in neutral environment. The turnover frequency is 0.0117 at η of 400 mV, almost the same as that in 1 m KOH solutions. The surface chemistry of the Co3O4 OEC indicates that the OAm can promote the activity. The reason that buffers as proton shuttles can greatly facilitate the reaction is ascribed to the proton‐coupled electron transfer process in the OER mechanism. These results may stimulate new perspectives on mimicking natural systems as well as new insights in electrocatalysis.  相似文献

Unveiling the intrinsic effects of Ruddlesden‐Popper (RP) series An+1BnO3n+1 (A = La, B = Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, n = 1, 2 and 3) catalysts is essential in order to optimize the activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and evolution reaction (OER). Here, it is demonstrated that the oxygen vacancy is not the key point for RP to realize high ORR and OER activity at high temperature. Instead, interstitial O2? with high concentration and fast migration, and lattice oxygen with high activity are favorable for the high‐temperature catalytic activity. Aliovalent cation doping is an effective strategy to modify the catalytic activity. For the RP catalysts, low‐valence ion doping does not introduce oxygen vacancies, which suppresses the activity of lattice oxygen and decreases the interstitial O2? concentration; whereas high‐valence ion doping enhances the interstitial O2– concentration and the lattice oxygen activity. The evaluations of six RP series (La2NiO4, La2CoO4, La3Co2O7, La4Ni3O10, La2MnO4, and La2CuO4 based) and twenty samples as oxygen electrodes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) demonstrate that this finding is applicable to all the selected RP series.  相似文献

The development of efficient and abundant water oxidation catalysts is essential for the large‐scale storage of renewable energy in the form of hydrogen fuel via electrolytic water splitting, but still remains challenging. Based upon eutectic reaction and dealloying inheritance effect, herein, novel Ni‐Fe‐O‐based composite with a unique mesoporous nanowire network structure is designed and synthesized. The composite exhibits exceptionally low overpotential (10 mA cm?2 at an overpotential of 244 mV), low Tafel slope (39 mV dec?1), and superior long‐term stability (remains 10 mA cm?2 for over 60 h without degradation) toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 m KOH. Moreover, an alkaline water electrolyzer is constructed with the Ni‐Fe‐O composite as catalyst for both anode and cathode. This electrolyzer displays superior electrolysis performance (affording 10 mA cm?2 at 1.64 V) and long‐term durability. The remarkable features of the catalyst lie in its unique mesoporous nanowire network architecture and the synergistic effect of the metal core and the active metal oxide, giving rise to the strikingly enhanced active surface area, accelerated electron/ion transport, and further promoted reaction kinetics of OER.  相似文献
