Human mediated introductions of non-indigenous crayfish species (NICS) are responsible for their rapid colonisation of European freshwaters. The introduction of North American crayfish is furthermore linked to the spread of crayfish plague and the decline of indigenous crayfish species (ICS). As the management of ICS and NICS have become necessary, a detailed knowledge on their distribution and ecological requirements is needed. We studied the current range of native noble crayfish Astacus astacus and stone crayfish Austropotamobius torrentium, as well as alien signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus in Carinthia (Austria) and evaluated environmental and physical habitat features in streams with and without crayfish. Meanwhile, the loss of many ICS populations was recorded and alien P. leniusculus was found to be widespread in this region. Most of the habitat features of streams having crayfish differed significantly from sites lacking crayfish for at least one investigated native or alien species. Furthermore, multivariate and regression analyses showed specific differences in the habitat use of the investigated crayfish. Our results showed that the presence of alien P. leniusculus was associated with larger and smoother sloped lowland rivers, while the occurrence of the two native species was confined to smaller streams either at higher altitudes and with distinct physical habitat conditions (A. torrentium) or with moderate water temperatures (A. astacus). This study helps to identify potential refuge areas for the endangered native species and to predict the further spread of the most common non-native crayfish species in European streams.  相似文献

This study reports about the spermatozoal ultrastructure of three species of astacid crayfish, i.e., the stone crayfish Austropotamobius torrentium, signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus, and noble crayfish Astacus astacus. The acrosome is a cup shaped and electron‐dense structure at the anterior of the spermatozoon and comprises three layers of differing electron densities filled with parallel filaments that extend from the base to the apical zone. The acrosome was significantly longer in A. astacus than in P. leniusculus and the shortest acrosome belongs to A. torrentium. The width of the acrosome was significantly narrower in A. torrentium than in P. leniusculus and the widest acrosome belongs to A. astacus. The L:W ratio was significantly greater in A. torrentium than in P. leniusculus and the lowest ratio belongs to A. astacus. Radial arms are visible on each side of the acrosome or nucleus in sagittal view and wrap around the spermatozoon. Each radial arm comprises a parallel bundle of microtubules arranged along the long axis within a sheath. The nucleus, with decondensed material, is located in the posterior of the cell. All parts of the spermatozoon are tightly enclosed within an extracellular capsule. Despite a well‐conserved general structure and similarity of pattern among these spermatozoa, differences in the dimensions of the acrosome within the studied species may be useful to help distinguish the different crayfish species. Recent increases in biological invasions frequency may have important consequences on native communities. However, functional redundancy between invasive and native species could reduce non-native species effects on native ecosystems. Despite this, even small differences in functional traits between these species may still have unpredictable effects on colonized ecosystems. Invasive crayfish, as ecosystem engineers, potentially have wide and complex effects on recipient ecosystems, even when replacing a native counterpart. We used laboratory microcosms to test whether native (Astacus astacus) and invasive crayfish species (Orconectes limosus, Pacifastacus leniusculus and Procambarus clarkii) are actually functionally redundant in their effects on prey/shredder density and leaf litter breakdown. Results show that crayfish strongly influenced macroinvertebrate numbers and leaf litter breakdown and indicate that differences in direct (prey and leaf litter consumption) and indirect (prey habitat use and leaf litter breakdown) effects between crayfish species do exist. While the replacement of A. astacus by O. limosus may have induced only minor changes in freshwater ecosystems, invasions by the larger and more aggressive P. clarkii and P. leniusculus will likely have strong effects on invaded ecosystem. Overall, there seems to be no functional redundancy between these four species and outcomes of crayfish invasion will likely be species specific.  相似文献

The attractiveness of shelters and the relationship between crayfish size and refuge size were investigated in the stone crayfish Austropotamobius torrentium. Shelter suitability was mainly determined by water velocity, stone surface area and stone width. Water depth and stone height had no influence on crayfish occupancy of stones. Austropotamobius torrentium avoided shelters in areas of water velocities exceeding 25 cm s–1. They preferred large stones with a bearing surface greater than 300 cm2. The probability of crayfish occupation rose quickly as stones' bearing surface increased up to 900 cm2. Crayfish were exclusively caught underneath stones at least 3.19 times longer and 1.25 times wider than the carapace length of the refuge occupant. Large males occupied larger stones, where no relationship was detected between female size and stone refuge size.  相似文献

Juvenile noble crayfish, Astacus astacus and spiny-cheek crayfish, Orconectes limosus were reared from the 2nd and the 3rd developmental stage (i.e. since the stage of independence), respectively, until the end of the growing season. The first period revealed very low survival rate of O. limosus in the communal stock (7 ± 6.2%), probably caused by predation of A. astacus. Separately reared O. limosus proved significantly higher survival rate (49 ± 9.2%) than those in the communal stock with A. astacus. The latter species also showed the highest survival rate in this case (90 ± 7.1%). This was not found to differ from the survival rate of separately reared noble crayfish (86 ± 3.1%). In general, both the significant effect of bigger size of A. astacus than that of O. limosus and higher intra-specific cannibalism of O. limosus were reflected during the first phase of rearing. Size and weight of both species were equivalent 11 weeks after hatching (8 weeks of rearing). The higher cumulative survival rate was reached in the intraspecific culture of A. astacus (90%) while low cumulative survival of both species was found in communal stock (less than 50%) in the second phase of rearing. At the end of the growing season, 19-week-old O. limosus attained a higher mean size and weight but were more variable in the group (29.3 ± 5.17 mm and 616.4 ± 412.53 mg) than A. astacus (21.2 ± 1.82 mm and 229.9 ± 59.45 mg). Single and communal stock did not differ. Growth of O. limosus was much faster than that of A. astacus.  相似文献

It is essential to find the combination of factors associated with ecosystem invasibility, as this forms part of basic knowledge on biological invasions and provides important information to guide management and conservation decisions. We surveyed 325 sampling sites in Catalonia to investigate relationships between crayfish presence and a series of biotic and abiotic factors, including fish abundance and species richness, geographical features, and water mineralization and eutrophication. Abiotic data provided by 29 environmental variables were studied by principal-components analysis. We then used a combination of three statistical approaches (comparison of average scores, general linear mixed models, and hierarchical partitioning analysis) to determine the potential relationship between crayfish occurrence and predictors. Our findings seem to indicate that the presence of crayfish was associated with geographical features, water mineralization and eutrophication, and the introduction of non-indigenous fish species to Catalonia. Our results also suggest that re-establishment of the natural hydrology of Mediterranean streams could hinder the spread of Procambarus clarkii. This, combined with preservation of headwater streams and attempts at local extirpation of P. clarkii, would favour native species and, potentially, enable the successful reintroduction of the native white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes species complex).  相似文献

In contrast with the usual coloration of stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium), we newly discovered a rare marble morph in a brook in the Czech Republic (Central Europe). During mark-recapture sessions, we captured by hand 1,103 individuals over the 3 years 2008–2010 from which only 5 were marble-colored. This color morph’s frequency of occurrence was thus less than 1% within the estimated subadult and adult stone crayfish population. Although many biological papers and determination keys regarding crayfish are based upon analysis of exoskeletal coloration, recent studies have asserted that this characteristic provides unreliable guidance when determining species inasmuch as it easily results in errors because many crayfish species exhibit an extensive variety of color morphs.  相似文献

The physiological condition of two invasive crayfish species identified in Croatian rivers (Orconectes limosus and Pacifastacus leniusculus) was compared with that of native crayfish populations (Astacus astacus and A. leptodactylus). Hepatosomatic, gonadosomatic and abdominal muscle indices were examined for all four species and within a specific invadernative pair. The results demonstrate that invasive crayfish had better overall physiological condition when compared to native species, with a higher energy content of the hepatopancreas, abdominal muscle and gonads in invasive than in native species, with the exception of A. leptodactylus females which demonstrated an increased ability to allocate energy to reproduction in comparison with other species. These results also indicate that A. astacus is physiologically more unstable than A. leptodactylus and thus more likely to be outcompeted and replaced by non-indigenous crayfish species.  相似文献

The analysis of Co(II)-apoHc complexes of two arthropodan species (freshwater crayfish): Orconectes limosus and Astacus astacus enabled to reach some conclusions about possible cobalt binding sites in the hemocyanin molecules. The occurrence of binding sites for Co(II) at sites other than the active center has been demonstrated. We excluded the possibility of strong binding of EDTA-non-removable cobalt ions in the binding sites occupied by copper. There were no differences between apoHc and the Co(II)apoHc complex in terms of the amount of bound Cu(I) ions and the kinetics of Cu(I) ion reconstitution.Abbreviations He hemocyanin - apoHc apohemocyanin - oxyHc oxyhemocyanin - Co-Hc hemocyanin complex with cobalt ions Offprint requests to: E. Currently, the distribution of the European native white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is restricted, fragmented and mainly located in headwater streams. Many European countries have active programmes for its conservation and some also have reintroduction programmes. Here, we used the ephemeropteran communities as a bioindicator of A. pallipes presence. Results from 36 brooks showed that the ephemeropteran richness is statistically higher in sites with crayfish compared to sites without crayfish. We propose using two Leptophlebiidae species (Habrophlebia lauta and Paraleptophlebia submarginata) as bioindicators of crayfish presence.  相似文献

One of the main threats to native European crayfish is the spread of alien crayfish species that are immune carriers of the detrimental crayfish plague Aphanomyces astaci. In this study we analyzed both at a regional and at a local scale factors determining native and alien crayfish distribution in an area where the species Procambarus clarkii is currently spreading. We aim to understand which management strategies could prevent the extinction of native populations. We sampled 81 waterbodies in Lombardy (NW Italy) to assess the Austropotamobius pallipes complex and alien crayfish occurrence; we also monitored the only first order stream in our study area that we found to be currently inhabited by A. pallipes upstream and by P. clarkii downstream. A. pallipes generally occurred in small brooks, near the spring, and was linked to low periphyton abundance, while P. clarkii occurred in sites at lower altitudes, far from the spring area, mainly in lentic waterbodies with large widths; this allochthonous species was positively related to periphyton abundance. Our monitoring showed that physical barriers such as dams may prevent P. clarkii dispersal upstream. Our results confirm that A. pallipes and P. clarkii have different ecological requirements and show that, at least during the first years of invasion, P. clarkii spreading involves lowland or downstream altered sites. We suggest the need for management strategies maximizing connectivity among native populations, to avoid isolation, and promoting the separation of native populations from those of P. clarkii.  相似文献

Aphanomyces astaci, the crayfish plague pathogen, first appeared in Europe in the mid-19th century and is still responsible for mass mortalities of native European crayfish. The spread of this parasite across the continent is especially facilitated by invasive North American crayfish species that serve as its reservoir. In France, multiple cases of native crayfish mortalities have been suggested to be connected with the presence of the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus, which is highly abundant in the country. It shares similar habitats as the native white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes and, when infected, the signal crayfish might therefore easily transmit the pathogen to the native species. We investigated the prevalence of A. astaci in French signal crayfish populations to evaluate the danger they represent to local populations of native crayfish. Over 500 individuals of Pacifastacus leniusculus from 45 French populations were analysed, plus several additional individuals of other non-indigenous crayfish species Orconectes limosus, O. immunis and Procambarus clarkii. Altogether, 20% of analysed signal crayfish tested positive for Aphanomyces astaci, and the pathogen was detected in more than half of the studied populations. Local prevalence varied significantly, ranging from 0% up to 80%, but wide confidence intervals suggest that the number of populations infected by A. astaci may be even higher than our results show. Analysis of several individuals of other introduced species revealed infections among two of these, O. immunis and P. clarkii. Our results confirm that the widespread signal crayfish serves as a key reservoir of Aphanomyces astaci in France and therefore represents a serious danger to native crayfish species, especially the white-clawed crayfish. The prevalence in other non-indigenous crayfish should also be investigated as they likely contribute to pathogen transmission in the country.  相似文献

Crayfish can be used as model organisms in phylogeographic and divergence time studies if reliable calibrations are available. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the phylogeography of the European stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium) and includes samples from previously unstudied sites. Two mitochondrial markers were used to reveal evolutionary relationships among haplogroups throughout the species’ distributional range and to estimate the divergence time by employing both substitution rates and geological calibration methods. Our haplotype network reconstruction and phylogenetic analyses revealed the existence of a previously unknown haplogroup distributed in Romania's Apuseni Mountains. This haplogroup is closely related to others that are endemic in the Dinarides, despite their vast geographical separation (~600 km). The separation is best explained by the well‐dated tectonic displacement of the Tisza–Dacia microplate, which started in the Miocene (~16 Ma) and possibly carried part of the A. torrentium population to the current location of the Apuseni Mountains. This population may thus have been isolated from the Dinarides for a period of ca. 11 m.y. by marine and lacustrine phases of the Pannonian Basin. The inclusion of this geological event as a calibration point in divergence time analyses challenges currently accepted crayfish evolutionary time frames for the region, constraining the evolution of this area's crayfish to a much earlier date. We discuss why molecular clock calibrations previously employed to date European crayfish species divergences should therefore be reconsidered.  相似文献

In tropical landscapes, forest remnants have been reduced to narrow strips of vegetation along rivers and streams surrounded by agricultural land that affects biodiversity, depending on the habitat and landscape characteristics. To assess the effect of riparian forest loss on the diversity of Staphylininae predatory rove beetles, we considered two habitat conditions (river sites with riparian vegetation and sites with heterogeneous pastures) within two micro-basin types (with >70% and <40% forest cover) in a tropical montane cloud forest landscape, Mexico. Beetles were collected using baited pitfall traps during the rainy season of 2014. No differences were found between micro-basin types and, although species richness (0D) was similar between habitat conditions, when the diversity of common (1D) and dominant (2D) species was considered, sites with heterogeneous pastures were almost twice as diverse as those with riparian vegetation. All diversity measurements were greater in sites with heterogeneous pastures of either micro-basin type. Air temperature and canopy cover were the environmental variables that best explained the variation in beetle species composition. The greatest environmental differences related to species composition were detected between habitat conditions and were more evident in sites with heterogeneous pastures and low forest cover in the surroundings. The results suggest that replacing riparian vegetation with heterogeneous pastures, within micro-basins that lost between 30% and 60% of their forest cover, does not significantly reduce the diversity of predatory rove beetle but rather modifies the beetle composition. Effective formulation of management strategies to mitigate the impact of land use modification therefore requires an understanding of the interaction between vegetation remnants and landscape characteristics.  相似文献

Loss and fragmentation of habitat resulting from the clearing of forests for agriculture and urban development threaten the persistence of thousands of species worldwide. The clearing of native forest to plant a monoculture of exotic trees may also reduce and fragment the habitat available for indigenous plants and animals. Metacommunity theory suggests that the species richness of a community in a patch of habitat will increase with patch size but decrease with patch isolation. We investigated whether replacement of native Eucalyptus forest with a plantation of Pinus radiata has reduced and fragmented habitat for frogs, leading to a lower species richness of frog communities in the pine plantation and in small and/or isolated remnant patches of native forest. We surveyed frogs at 60 sites at streams and wetlands in the pine plantation, remnant patches of native forest surrounded by pines, and adjacent areas of contiguous native forest near Tumut in New South Wales, Australia. Only two of eight species of frogs were recorded in the pine plantation, and regression modelling indicated that streams and wetlands in the pines supported fewer frog species than those in remnant patches or the intact native forest. In addition, species richness tended to be higher at wide, shallow swamps and marshes near the headwaters of streams, with herbs, grasses, shrubs, reeds, sedges and rushes in the emergent and fringing vegetation. There was little evidence to suggest that larger eucalypt remnants supported more species of frogs, or that remnants isolated by greater expanses of pines supported fewer species, but we had low power to detect these effects with our data set. Our results support the preservation of all remnants of native forest along drainage lines and around swamps, soaks and bogs, regardless of size. Where new pine plantations are established, for example, on cleared agricultural land, care should be taken to maintain the structural and vegetative characteristics of water bodies to ensure that they continue to provide suitable breeding habitat for frogs.  相似文献

Invasion is one of the most consequential phenomena affecting the distribution of native species. Few in number of species, European crayfish are losing the competition with introduced North American crayfish. The spiny-cheek crayfish, Orconectes limosus, is an outstanding example, successfully competing against the native narrow-clawed crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus. For four years, we collected data regarding crayfish occurrences, their relative abundance, and the structure of populations in the ongoing colonisation process of O. limosus in the lower Danube. The mature females of both invasive and indigenous crayfish species were analysed with respect to biometry and production of oocytes in relation to the dynamics of invasion. The interspecific comparisons showed no significant differences regarding body size, with an average of approximately 102 mm total length and 31 g wet weight for both species. However, the fecundity of the indigenous species was found to be constant throughout the investigated area, whereas the number of eggs produced by the invasive females was significantly increased at the active front of the invasion. The maximum number of ovarian eggs found was 887 and 1156 in the indigenous species and the invasive species, respectively. We propose the scenario that the invasive species, which carries the deadly crayfish plague, creates an ecological advantage by reducing the populations of indigenous crayfish. Subsequently, the invasive females opportunistically use the available resources to enhance their fecundity, resulting in the acute growth of populations. However, the long-term competitiveness and colonisation success of O. limosus still remain in question.  相似文献

North American signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) are invasive in Europe and pose a serious threat to indigenous European crayfish such as the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus). This is mainly because signal crayfish is the carrier of crayfish plague agent, Aphanomyces astaci, which freshwater crayfish from all other continents are highly susceptible to. Until recently, the distribution of signal crayfish in Danish streams has been considered local and restricted to a small geographical area. Here we present data demonstrating that signal crayfish are now widespread in Denmark, including the largest Danish river, River Gudenå. For one of the rivers where co-existing signal crayfish and indigenous noble crayfish were documented, sensitive molecular tests could not detect the crayfish plague agent Aphanomyces astaci in either species. Hence, it seems that not all signal crayfish are chronic carriers of the disease. For the remaining freshwater systems with the introduced signal crayfish, the infection status is presently unknown. Large areas of the freshwater systems in Denmark also remain unexplored with respect to presence/absence of signal crayfish and noble crayfish. Nevertheless, our preliminary data that covers about 14% of the Danish rivers, strongly suggests that signal crayfish should be considered as a common invader that poses an increased threat to the biota in Danish streams, in particular for the indigenous noble crayfish.  相似文献

The composition of the diet of the invasive spiny-cheek crayfish Orconectes limosus was studied using qualitative and quantitative analyses of stomach contents. A total of 368 specimens collected in 2003–2005 and 2008 in Czech localities were examined, predominantly from the Labe (Elbe) and Vltava River basins. Food components were compared for three size classes of crayfish and both sexes. The following conclusions were reached: (1) the spiny-cheek crayfish is an omnivorous species consuming plants, animals and detritus; (2) quantitatively, the main food component of O. limosus is detritus, while the plant component was second; (3) O. limosus may swallow whole food particles up to 4 mm in size, and the bodies of small animals may sometimes be found undamaged in their stomachs.  相似文献

Synopsis Fish populations may be affected by predation and competition from various types of organisms, among which crayfish have been suggested as important actors. We here present results from stream surveys, suggesting that neither native noble, Astacus astacus, nor introduced signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, necessarily affect fish population densities in temperate stream communities. Comparisons of fish densities within stream sites between years with absence and presence of crayfish showed no effect of either crayfish species. A further analysis of changes in fish densities between periods without and with crayfish in low, intermediate and high densities revealed that crayfish density did neither have an effect on fish densities. Our study is one of exceptionally few that consider the above aspects in long-term perspectives in natural systems, and we discuss that previously reported divergent results of crayfish effects on fish may be highly dependent on specific species and methods used, and that the effects of crayfish on fish populations deserve further attention to enable reliable predictions of community processes in streams.  相似文献
