Two 14-day-old seedlings of maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars (3223 and Vero) were exposed to different concentrations of lead [0, 2, 5 and 8 mM Pb(NO3)2·4H2O] for 8 days. Exposure of maize cultivars to excess Pb resulted in a significant root growth inhibition though shoot growth and absolute water content remained less affected. The results of chlorophyll a fluorescence indicated that the highly toxic Pb level affected photochemical efficiency in 3223, while no significant effect was observed in the Vero. At the highly toxic Pb concentration, higher membrane leakage was observed in 3223 leaves than that of Vero. This result was related to the accumulation of Pb. On the other hand, the results suggested that there were similar responses in total soluble POD and GR activities with increasing Pb concentrations between both cultivars. But APX activity significantly decreased at highly toxic Pb level in the Vero while a significant increase observed in the 3223. However, SOD activity in 3223 significantly decreased at the highly toxic Pb concentration compared with that at 2 mM Pb concentration. The results of the present study indicated that, Vero withstands excess Pb with its higher Pb accumulation capacity in roots and better upregulated protective mechanisms compared to 3223. Therefore, Vero is more tolerant to Pb toxicity compared to 3223 which was found to be a less tolerant cultivar.  相似文献

Translocation of cadmium (Cd) in the tissues of Vicia faba, the water content in biomass, the biomass production, and the glutathione and phytochelatin tissue concentrations were studied and correlated with the plant sensitivity and/or tolerance to Cd. The total concentrations of Cd were determined by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the concentrations of glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins 2 and 3 (PC2 and PC3) were determined by on-line high performance liquid chromatography/electrospray-ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–ESI–MS–MS) in the roots and leaves of the sensitive and the tolerant cultivars of V. faba grown in Cd containing nutrient solutions (NS, 0–100 μmol l−1 Cd2+). Both the cultivars of V. faba accumulate a major portion of Cd in the roots and only a minor part of ca. 4% in the leaves. The differences between the cultivars concerning Cd accumulation in leaves were apparent from higher Cd concentrations in NS and the Cd amount in the sensitive cultivar was approximately twice as high. In the roots, the differences between the cultivars in the Cd accumulation were only statistically significant with the highest Cd concentrations in NS, with the tolerant cultivar accumulating about 16% more of Cd compared to the sensitive one. The biomass production of the sensitive cultivar decreased approximately twice as fast with increasing Cd concentration in NS. The biomass water content decreased with increasing Cd concentration in NS in both the cultivars. In general, the GSH concentration did not linearly correlate with Cd accumulation, except for the roots of the sensitive cultivar where it was independent, and was higher in the sensitive cultivar than in the tolerant one in both the leaves and roots. The GSH concentration in leaves was approximately one order of magnitude higher than that in the roots for both the cultivars. The relationships between the PC and Cd concentrations in tissues were found nonlinear. At lower Cd accumulation levels, the PC concentrations followed an increase in the Cd accumulation in both the roots and leaves, whereas at higher Cd accumulations the relations differed between roots and leaves. In the roots, the PC concentrations decreased with increasing Cd accumulation, whereas the PC concentration in the leaves followed the decrease in the Cd accumulation.  相似文献

Differences in absorption and distribution of phosphorus (P) between early and medium-duration cultivars of pigeon pea grown on nutrient solution at two P concentrations were investigated. Low-P treatment (0.03 ppm) significantly reduced shoot weight, root length and root surface area in both cultivars compared to the control (1.0 ppm), but the reduction was more pronounced in the early than the medium-duration cultivar. Dry-matter accumulation in shoots was slightly higher in the medium-duration than in the early cultivar.32P-labelled P in the whole plant, P uptake rate and P-absorption ability were higher in the medium than in the early cultivar. At the low-P, however, no differences in these parameters were observed for control plants. In shoots,32P-labelled P tended to accumulate in the stem of the early cultivar whereas more P was distributed to the leaves and petioles in the medium cultivar. The results suggest that when P supply is limited, medium-duration cultivars accumulate more dry matter through high efficiency of P absorption and distribution P to leaves and petioles.  相似文献

Two soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars, Tachiyutaka and Dare, were grown in pots at 30 and 70 % relative humidity (RH) and treated with 0 (control), 40 (moderate), 80 and 120 (severe) mM NaCl for 3 weeks. Increasing RH enhanced growth of salt sensitive cultivar, Tachiyutaka, but had no effect on salt tolerant cultivar, Dare, under control and moderate saline conditions. Both cultivars benefited from elevated humidity under severe saline conditions. Cultivar Tachiyutaka had poorer ability for controlling translocation of Na+ to the leaves, lower Na+ exclusion ability in the roots, and lower root activity under NaCl treatment, compared with cv. Dare. The increased growth of cv. Tachiyutaka at high RH was consistent with decreased Na+ accumulation in the leaves, increased stomatal conductance and root activity, while the unchanged growth of cv. Dare was consistent with similar Na+ accumulation in the leaves, and the decreased root activity.  相似文献

Accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in crop plants is of great concern due to the potential for food chain contamination through the soil-root interface. Although Cd uptake varies considerably with plant species, the processes which determine the accumulation of Cd in plant tissues are affected by soil factors. The influence of soil type on Cd uptake by durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var. durum L.) and flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) was studied in a pot experiment under environmentally controlled growth chamber conditions. Four cultivars/lines of durum wheat (Kyle, Sceptre, DT 627, and DT 637) and three cultivars/lines of flax (Flanders, AC Emerson, and YSED 2) were grown in two Saskatchewan soils: an Orthic Gray Luvisol (low background Cd concentration; total/ABDTPA extractable Cd: 0.12/0.03 mg kg-1, respectively) and a Dark Brown Chernozem (relatively high background Cd concentration; total/ABDTPA Cd: 0.34/0.17 mg kg-1 respectively). Plant roots, stems, newly developed heads, and grain/seeds were analyzed for Cd concentration at three stages of plant growth: two and seven weeks after germination, and at plant maturity. The results showed that Cd bioaccumulation and distribution within the plants were strongly affected by both soil type and plant cultivar/line. The Cd concentration in roots leaves and stems varied at different stages of plant growth. However, all cultivars of both plant species grown in the Chernozemic soil accumulated more Cd in grain/seeds than plants grown in the Orthic Gray Luvisol soil. The different Cd accumulation pattern also corresponded to the levels of ABDTPA extractable and metal-organic complex bound soil Cd found in both soils. Large differences were found in grain Cd among the durum wheat cultivars grown in the same soil type, suggesting the importance of rhizosphere processes in Cd bioaccumulation and/or Cd transport processes within the plant. Distribution of Cd in parts of mature plants showed that durum grain contained up to 21 and 36% of the total amount of Cd taken up by the plants for the Orthic Gray Luvisol and Chernozemic soils, respectively. These results indicate the importance of studying Cd speciation, bioaccumulation and cycling in the environment for the management of agricultural soils and crops.  相似文献

With two sorghum cultivars differing in P efficiency a P uptake experiment (32P/33P labelling) was carried out followed by a period of P deficiency. The tendency of the total P distribution and redistribution pattern was rather similar in both sorghum cultivars. Although in the cultivar with a greater P absorbing capacity per unit root weight a higher proportion of the P was found in the inorganic P soluble fraction this is not necessarily an indication of a higher vacuolar affinity for P. Under P deficiency in both cultivars a rapid decrease of the TCA soluble P fraction in the leaves was observed. Before complete exhaustion of this fraction the TCA insoluble P fraction was also markedly reduced. In the roots the total P content was maintained fairly constant with a distinct shift in favour of the insoluble fraction occurring during the period of P deficiency. It is assumed that in the P efficient sorghum cultivar producing more dry matter per increment of P absorbed, rather inherent growth promoting factors contribute to the intraspecific P efficiency by a stimulation of the intensity of P redistribution and thus compensate for the lower P absorbing capacity of its roots.  相似文献

The effects of salicylic acid (SA) and salinity on the activity of apoplastic antioxidant enzymes were studied in the leaves of two wheat (Triticum aestivam L.) cultivars: salt-tolerant (Gerek-79) and salt-sensitive (Bezostaya). The leaves of 10-d-old seedlings grown at nutrient solution with 0 (control), 250 or 500 mM NaCl were sprayed with 0.01 or 0.1 mM SA. Then, the activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined in the fresh leaves obtained from 15-d-old seedlings. The NaCl applications increased CAT and SOD activities in both cultivars, compared to those of untreated control plants. In addition, the NaCl increased POX activity in the salt-tolerant while decreased in the salt-sensitive cultivar. In control plants of the both cultivars, 0.1 mM SA increased CAT activity, while 0.01 mM SA slightly decreased it. SA treatments also stimulated SOD and POX activity in the salt-tolerant cultivar but significantly decreased POX activity and had no effect on SOD activity in the saltsensitive cultivar. Under salinity, the SA treatments significantly inhibited CAT activity, whereas increased POX activity. The increases in POX activity caused by SA were more pronounced in the salt-tolerant than in the salt-sensitive cultivar. SOD activity was increased by 0.01 mM SA in the salt-tolerant while increased by 0.1 mM SA treatment in the salt-sensitive cultivar.  相似文献

The changes in growth and photosynthetic performance of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (Bolal-2973 and Atay-85) differing in their sensitivity to boron (B) toxicity were investigated under toxic B conditions. Eight-day old seedlings were exposed to highly toxic B concentrations (5, 7.5, and 10 mM H3BO3) for 5 and 9 days. Fast chlorophyll a fluorescence kinetics was determined and analysed using JIP test. Growth parameters, tissue B contents, and membrane damage were measured at two stress durations. The photochemical performance of PSII was hindered more in the sensitive cultivar (Atay-85) than that of the tolerant one (Bolal-2973) under B toxicity. The increase in the B concentration and stress duration caused membrane leakage in both cultivars. However, higher membrane damage was observed in Atay-85 compared to Bolal-2973. Additionally, significant reduction of growth parameters was observed in both cultivars at toxic B concentrations. The accumulation of B was higher in shoots than in roots of both cultivars. Nevertheless, Atay-85 translocated more B from roots to leaves compared to Bolal-2973. The advantages of certain JIP test parameters were demonstrated for evaluation of PSII activity in plants exposed to B stress. Evaluation of photosynthetic performance by JIP test as well as assessment of growth and tissue B content might be used to determine the effects of B toxicity in wheat. The results indicated lesser sensitivity to B toxicity in Bolal-2973 compared to Atay-85.  相似文献

Significant differences in the antioxidant systems of the roots of two chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars differing in tolerance to drought were observed in under toxic boron (B) conditions. Three-week-old chickpea seedlings were subjected to 0.05 mM (control), 1.6 mM or 6.4 mM B in the form of boric acid (H3BO3) for 7 days. At the end of the treatment period, root length, dry weight, boron concentration, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes—superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APOX) and glutathione reductase (GR)—were measured. Root length of the drought-tolerant Gökce cultivar did not change under 1.6 mM B but increased under 6.4 mM B. On the contrary, root length decreased in the drought-sensitive Küsmen cultivar under both B concentrations. While root dry weight was unaffected in Gökce, it decreased in Küsmen under both B concentrations. Boron concentration was significantly higher in Küsmen than in Gökce at both B levels. Significant increases in SOD and POX activities were observed in roots of both cultivars under 1.6 and 6.4 mM B. Root extracts exhibited three SOD and three POX activity bands in both cultivars under B stress when compared to control groups. Although CAT activity in Gökce was increased, it decreased in Küsmen at the highest B concentration as compared to control groups. Roots of both cultivars showed no significant change in APOX activity under B toxicity (except in 1.6 mM B treated roots of Küsmen) when compared to control groups. GR activity in the roots of Küsmen decreased significantly with increasing B concentration. However, a significant increase in GR activity was found in Gökce under 1.6 mM B stress. In addition, lipid peroxidation levels of drought-sensitive Küsmen increased, indicating more damage to membrane lipids due to B toxicity. Lipid peroxidation did not change in the drought-tolerant Gökce cultivar at either B concentration. These results suggest that roots of Gökce are better protected from B-stress-induced oxidative stress due to enhanced SOD, CAT and POX activities under high B levels.  相似文献

High Na+ and Cl- concentrations in soil cause hyperionic and hyperosmotic stress effects, the consequence of which can be plant demise. Ion-specific stress effects of Na+ and Cl- on seedlings of cultivated (Glycine max (L.) Merr) and wild soybean (Glycine soja Sieb. Et Zucc.) were evaluated and compared in isoosmotic solutions of Cl-, Na+ and NaCl. Results showed that under NaCl stress, Cl- was more toxic than Na+ to seedlings of G. max. Injury of six G. max cultivars, including 'Jackson' (salt sensitive) and 'Lee 68' (salt tolerant), was positively correlated with the content of Cl- in the leaves, and negatively with that in the roots. In subsequent research, seedlings of two G. max cultivars (salt-tolerant Nannong 1138-2, and salt-sensitive Zhongzihuangdou-yi) and two G. soja populations (BB52 and N23232) were subjected to isoosmotic solutions of 150mM Na+, Cl- and NaCl, respectively. G. max cv. Nannong 1138-2 and Zhongzihuangdou-yi were damaged much more heavily in the solution of Cl- than in that of Na+. Their Leaves were found to be more sensitive to Cl- than to Na+, and salt tolerance of these two G. max cultivars was mainly due to successful withholding of Cl- in the roots and stems to decrease its content in the leaves. The reverse response to isoosmotic stress of 150 mM Na+ and Cl- was shown in G. soja populations of BB52 and N23232; their leaves were not as susceptible to toxicity of Cl- as that of Na+. Salt tolerance of BB52 and N23232 was mainly due to successful withholding of Na+ in the roots and stems to decrease its content in the leaves. These results indicate that G. soja have advantages over G. max in those traits associated with the mechanism of Cl-tolerance, such as its withholding in roots and vacuoles of leaves. It is possible to use G. soja to improve the salt tolerance of G. max.  相似文献

To study the mechanisms of exogenous NO contribution to alleviate the cadmium (Cd) toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa), rice plantlets subjected to 0.2-mM CdCl2 exposure were treated with different concentrations of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a NO donor), and Cd toxicity was evaluated by the decreases in plant length, biomass production and chlorophyll content. The results indicated that 0.1 mM SNP alleviated Cd toxicity most obviously. Atomic absorption spectrometry and fluorescence localization showed that treatment with 0.1 mM SNP decreased Cd accumulation in both cell walls and soluble fraction of leaves, although treatment with 0.1 mM SNP increased Cd accumulation in the cell wall of rice roots obviously. Treatment with 0.1 mM SNP in nutrient solution had little effect on the transpiration rate of rice leaves, but this treatment increased pectin and hemicellulose content and decreased cellulose content significantly in the cell walls of rice roots. Based on these results, we conclude that decreased distribution of Cd in the soluble fraction of leaves and roots and increased distribution of Cd in the cell walls of roots are responsible for the NO-induced increase of Cd tolerance in rice. It seems that exogenous NO enhances Cd tolerance of rice by increasing pectin and hemicellulose content in the cell wall of roots, increasing Cd accumulation in root cell wall and decreasing Cd accumulation in soluble fraction of leaves.  相似文献

The contributions of cadmium (Cd) accumulation in cell walls, antioxidative enzymes and induction of phytochelatins (PCs) to Cd tolerance were investigated in two distinctive genotypes of black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.). One cultivar of black oat ‘New oat’ accumulated Cd in the leaves at the highest concentration compared to another black oat cultivar ‘Soil saver’ and other major graminaceous crops. The shoot:root Cd ratio also demonstrated that ‘New oat’ was the high Cd-accumulating cultivar, whereas ‘Soil saver’ was the low Cd-accumulating cultivar. Varied levels of Cd exposure demonstrated the strong Cd tolerance of ‘New oat’. By contrast, low Cd-accumulating cultivar ‘Soil saver’ suffered Cd toxicity such as growth defects and increased lipid peroxidation, even though it accumulated less Cd in shoots than ‘New oat’. Higher activities of ascorbate peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.11) and superoxide dismutase (EC 1. 15. 1. 1) were observed in the leaves of ‘New oat’ than in ‘Soil saver’. No advantage of ‘New oat’ in PCs induction was observed in comparison to Cd-sensitive cultivar ‘Soil saver’, although Cd exposure increased the concentration of total PCs in both cultivars. Higher and increased Cd accumulation in cell wall fraction was observed in shoots of ‘New oat’. On the other hand, in ‘Soil saver’, apoplasmic Cd accumulation showed saturation under higher Cd exposure. Overall, the present results suggest that cell wall Cd accumulation and antioxidative activities function in the tolerance against Cd stress possibly in combination with vacuolar Cd compartmentation.  相似文献

Cadmium accumulation and oxidative burst in garlic (Allium sativum)   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
To investigate the temporal sequence of physiological reactions of garlic (Allium sativum) to cadmium (Cd) treatment, seedlings developed from cloves were grown in increasing concentrations of CdCl2, ranging from 1-10 mM, for up to 8 days in sand. Analysis of Cd uptake indicated that most Cd accumulated in roots, but some was also translocated and accumulated in leaves at longer exposure time (after 12h) and higher concentrations (5 and 10mM) of CdCl2. Changes in activities of antioxidative enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT), were characterized in leaves of garlic seedlings. Cd (5 and 10 mM) initially inhibited the activities of SOD and CAT but thereafter recovered or even increased compared with control plants. POD activities at 5 and 10 mM of Cd increased more than 3-4 times over control plants within 12 h and then dropped, but were still higher than controls at the end of the experiment. Otherwise lipid peroxidation enhanced with the increasing of incubation time and concentrations of external Cd. Leaves exposed to 1 mM CdCl2 showed a less pronounced response and only a small reduction in shoot growth. These results suggested that in leaves of garlic seedlings challenged by CdCl2 at higher concentrations, induction of these various enzymes is part of a general defense strategy to cope with overproduction of reactive oxygen. The possible mechanism of antioxidative enzymes changing before Cd accumulation in leaves of garlic seedlings is discussed.  相似文献

Three strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cultivars Rainier, Totem and Selva were grown under greenhouse conditions in a Parkhill sandy loam soil with a background DTPA-extractable Cd concentration of 0.18 mg kg-1 and a pH of 5.1. Experimental treatments included combinations of 4 Cd applications (0, 15, 30 and 60 mg Cd kg-1 soil) applied as CdSO4 and 2 soil pH values 5.1 and 6.8. Both the application of Cd and pH of the soil significantly affected plant growth, yield and Cd accumulation in plant tissue anf fruit. Although roots accumulated the highest concentrations of Cd of all plant parts investigated, increased soil Cd application reduced leaf weight more than root weight. In general, yield of strawberries was decreased by an increase in amount of soil-applied Cd, however the yield response varied among cultivars. At 60 mg Cd kg-1 soil, yield of Rainier cultivar was reduced to 17.6% of control plants. Over 90% of total Cd taken up by plants grown in Cd-treated soil accumulated in roots, regardless of the Cd level in the soil. Root Cd concentrations ranged from 2.6 mg kg-1 (control plants) to 505.7 mg kg-1 (Totem plants grown in soil at highest Cd and a soil pH 5.1) and were directly related to soil Cd concentrations. Cd translocation from roots to leaves and fruit was very limited, resulting in a maximum Cd concentration in root leaf tissue of 10.2 mg kg-1. Accumulation of Cd in fruit was found to correlate well with leaf Cd, although even at the highest amount of applied Cd, fruit Cd concentration did not exceed 700 g kg-1 of fresh weight.Contribution no. 951  相似文献

Antioxidative response to cadmium in roots and leaves of tomato plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Treatment of tomato seedlings (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. 63/5 F1) with increasing CdCl2 concentrations in the culture medium resulted in Cd accumulation more important in roots than in leaves. Biomass production was severely inhibited, even at low Cd concentration. Cd reduced chlorophyll content in leaves and enhanced lipid peroxidation. An increase in antioxidative enzyme (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, glutathione reductase) activities was more pronounced in leaves than in roots, while catalase activity increased only in roots. In addition, changes in isoenzyme composition were observed using the non-denaturing polyacrylamid gel electrophoresis.  相似文献

The effects of different CdCl2 concentrations on the growth and on certain biochemical parameters of almond seedlings (Prunus dulcis) were studied under controlled conditions in the nutrient solutions containing increasing CdCl2 concentrations ranging from 0 to 150 μM CdCl2. Under Cd stress conditions, damage was variable. Cadmium reduced dry matter production in leaves and roots. While chlorophyll content was severely decreased, that of leaf sugars appeared to be increased. Furthermore, leaf nutritional status seemed to be more altered than that of roots. Both in roots and leaves, there was an increase in MDA content as metal concentration increased. It may be suggested from the present study that toxic concentrations of Cd cause oxidative damage as shown by the increase of lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

An investigation of boron toxicity in barley using metabolomics   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
Boron (B) is an essential micronutrient that affects plant growth at either deficient or toxic concentrations in soil. The aim of this work was to investigate the adaptation of barley (Hordeum vulgare) plants to toxic B levels and to increase our understanding of B toxicity tolerance mechanisms. We used a metabolomics approach to compare metabolite profiles in root and leaf tissues of an intolerant, commercial cultivar (cv Clipper) and a B-tolerant Algerian landrace (cv Sahara). After exposure to elevated B (200 and 1,000 microM), the number and amplitude of metabolite changes in roots was greater in Clipper than in Sahara. In contrast, leaf metabolites of both cultivars only responded following 1,000 microM treatment, at which B toxicity symptoms (necrosis) were visible. In addition, metabolite levels were dramatically altered in the tips of leaves of the sensitive cultivar Clipper after growth in 1,000 microM B compared to those of Sahara. This correlates with a gradual accumulation of B from leaf base to tip in B-intolerant cultivars. Overall, there were always greater differences between tissue types (roots and leaves) than between the two cultivars. This work has provided insights into metabolic differences of two genetically distinct barley cultivars and information about how they respond metabolically to increasing B levels.  相似文献

A hydroponic experiment was carried out to characterize the oxidative stress responses of two potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum L. cvs. Asterix and Macaca) to cadmium (Cd). Plantlets were exposed to four Cd levels (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 μM) for 7 days. Cd concentration was increased in both roots and shoot. Number of sprouts and roots was not decreased, whereas Cd treatment affected the number of nodal segments. Chlorophyll content and ALA-D activity were decreased in both cultivars, whereas carotenoids content was decreased only in Macaca. Cd caused lipid peroxidation in roots and shoot of both cultivars. Protein oxidation was only verified at the highest Cd level. H2O2 content was increased in roots and shoot of Asterix, and apparently, a compensatory response between roots and shoot of Macaca was observed. SOD activity was inhibited in roots of Asterix at all Cd treatments, whereas in Macaca it was only increased at two highest Cd levels. Shoot SOD activity increased in Asterix and decreased in Macaca. Root CAT activity in Asterix decreased at 100 and 150 μM, whereas in Macaca it decreased only at 50 μM. Shoot CAT activity was decreased in Macaca. Root AsA content in Macaca was not affected, whereas in shoot it was reduced at 100 μM and increased at 200 μM. Cd caused increase in NPSH content in roots and shoot. Our results suggest that Cd induces oxidative stress in both potato cultivars and that of the two cultivars, Asterix showed greater sensitivity to Cd levels.  相似文献

Lotus tenuis (Wadst. & Kit.) is a perennial legume widely grown for pasture in the flood-prone and salt affected Pampa region of Argentina. The physiology of salt and waterlogging tolerance in L. tenuis (four cultivars) was evaluated, and compared with Lotus corniculatus (three cultivars); the most widely cultivated Lotus species. Overall, L. tenuis cultivars accumulated less Na+ and Cl, and more K+ in shoots than L. corniculatus cultivars, when exposed to 200 mM NaCl for 28 days in aerated or in stagnant solutions. Root porosity was higher in L. tenuis cultivars due to greater aerenchyma formation. In a NaCl dose–response experiment (0–400 mM NaCl in aerated solution), L. tenuis (cv. Chaja) accumulated half as much Cl in its shoots than L. corniculatus (cv. San Gabriel) at all external NaCl concentrations, and about 30% less shoot Na+ in treatments above 250 mM NaCl. Ion distributions in shoots were determined for plants at 200 mM NaCl. L. tenuis (cv. Chaja) again accumulated about half as much Cl in old leaves, young leaves and stems, compared with concentrations in L. corniculatus (cv. San Gabriel). There were not, however, significant differences between the two species for Na+ concentrations in the various shoot tissues. The higher root porosity, and maintenance of lower shoot Cl and Na+ concentrations in L. tenuis, compared with L. corniculatus, contributes to the greater tolerance to combined salt and waterlogging stress in L. tenuis. Moreover, significant variation for tolerance to combined salinity and waterlogging stress was identified within both L. tenuis and L. corniculatus.  相似文献
