Abstract. Volatiles from solitary-reared (solitarious) and crowd-reared (gregarious) adult male desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), were quantitatively and qualitatively different. In particular, solitarious males did not emit phenylacetonitrile, a key component of the aggregation pheromone produced by gregarious adult males. In laboratory bioassays, solitarious and gregarious adults of both sexes responded similarly to the natural aggregation pheromone blend, the major pheromone component phenylacetonitrile, and a synthetic pheromone blend comprising benzaldehyde, guaiacol, phenylacetonitrile and phenol.EAG measurements showed significant differences in the responsiveness of adults of the two phases to the four synthetic components at high doses; however, the general response patterns were similar. These results suggest that the gregarious adult male aggregation pheromone may play a role in the arrestment and subsequent recruitment of solitarious individuals into gregarious or gregarizing groups during the early stages of a locust outbreak.  相似文献

Courtship inhibition pheromone in desert locusts,Schistocerca gregaria   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Male desert locusts in the gregarious phase release phenylacetonitrile (PAN) on becoming sexually mature. It has been assumed that this chemical is responsible for aggregation of adult desert locusts. However, PAN has repellent characteristics and is involved in sexual behavior. Mature males release PAN as a volatile to serve as a kind of olfactory concealment during mating and to prevent competing males from homosexual encounters. We conclude that PAN is a courtship-inhibiting pheromone exclusively used under crowded conditions in dense populations when high sperm competition occurs among desert locust males. By chemically enhancing their mate guarding, gregarious males improve the protection of their mate from rivals and ensure their reproductive success.  相似文献

We examined the ecdysteroid content of eggs from crowd-reared and solitary-reared desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, throughout embryogenesis from the day of egg laying until shortly before hatching on day 14. Depending on the time during incubation, ecdysteroid content in eggs from crowd-reared females was 5-10 times higher than in eggs from solitary-reared females. Our investigation revealed two peaks in ecdysteroid content of eggs from crowd-reared females, a small one at day 3 and a major peak at day 10 of incubation. At days 10, 12 and 14 during incubation of eggs from crowd-reared females, we found a positive correlation between egg mass and ecdysteroid content. There was no difference between eggs from the bottom and the top of individual egg pods, but variation in ecdysteroid content between egg pods from different females was considerable in all treatment groups. A brief crowding of solitary-reared females at the time of egg laying, a treatment that initiates maternally mediated gregarization of the developing offspring, had no effect on the consistently low ecdysteroid content in the eggs. This result rules out the possibility that the crowding experience of females is transmitted to the offspring by variation in the total amount of ecdysteroids in their eggs.  相似文献

Coloration phase state, morphometrical ratios and the numbers of mature oocytes of Locusta migratoria migratoria were examined in a series of experiments to determine the means by which phase characteristics are passed to the next generation. Washing with distilled water of eggs from egg pods laid by gregarious crowd-reared females resulted in solitarization of the hatchlings after their isolation, indicating that a factor present in eggs encapsulated in foam is causal to gregarization. Such locusts showed a significant shift towards the typical solitarious body coloration, morphometry and number of mature oocytes as compared to locusts resulting from unwashed eggs. Gregarious coloration, morphometrical ratios and oocyte numbers could be partially restored when hatchlings from washed eggs were regrouped. When gregarious locusts were reared in isolation, they showed a solitary body color, whereas, morphometry and oocyte numbers were not affected by isolation.  相似文献

Chemical communication plays an important role in density‐dependent phase change in locusts. However, the volatile components and emission patterns of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, are largely unknown. In this study, we identified the chemical compositions and emission dynamics of locust volatiles from the body and feces and associated them with developmental stages, sexes and phase changes. The migratory locust shares a number of volatile components with the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria), but the emission dynamics of the two locust species are significantly different. The body odors of the gregarious nymphs in the migratory locust consisted of phenylacetonitrile (PAN), benzaldehyde, guaiacol, phenol, aliphatic acids and 2,3‐butanediol, and PAN was the dominant volatile. Volatiles from the fecal pellets of the nymphs primarily consist of guaiacol and phenol. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed significant differences in the volatile profiles between gregarious and solitary locusts. PAN and 4‐vinylanisole concentrations were significantly higher in gregarious individuals than in solitary locusts. Gregarious mature males released significantly higher amounts of PAN and 4‐vinylanisole during adulthood than mature females and immature adults of both sexes. Furthermore, PAN and 4‐vinylanisole were completely lost in gregarious nymphs during the solitarization process, but were obtained by solitary nymphs during gregarization. The amounts of benzaldehyde, guaiacol and phenol only unidirectionally decreased from solitary to crowded treatment. Aliphatic aldehydes (C7 to C10), which were previously reported as locust volatiles, are now identified as environmental contaminants. Therefore, our results illustrate the precise odor profiles of migratory locusts during developmental stages, sexes and phase change. However, the function and role of PAN and other aromatic compounds during phase transition need further investigation.  相似文献

Wings and legs of the gregarious desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria have been shown to be release sites of phenylacetonitrile (PAN), the major adult male-produced pheromone. However, there is limited information on the distribution of PAN within the locust. Here we show, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), that PAN occurs in nearly all body parts of both adult males and females of the locust in varying amounts. PAN was 20-fold more concentrated in males than in females. In females, PAN was concentrated more in the tarsal segments. The greatest amounts of PAN were in 2- and 3-week old female and male body parts, respectively. No trace of PAN was found in similar ages and sexes of the solitarious phase desert locust. Our results show that PAN is distributed in the body matrix of both sexes of gregarious phase locusts and suggest that no specific tissue is responsible for biosynthesis of the pheromone.  相似文献

Chemical stimulation of contact chemoreceptors located on the legs of locusts evokes withdrawal movements of the leg. The likelihood of withdrawal depends on the site of stimulation, in addition to the identity and concentration of the chemical stimulus. A significantly higher percentage of locusts exhibit leg avoidance movements in response to stimulation of distal parts of the leg with any given chemical stimulus compared to proximal sites. Moreover, the percentage of locusts exhibiting avoidance movements is correlated with the density and sensitivity of chemoreceptors on different sites of an individual leg. The effectiveness of chemical stimulation also differs between the fore and hind legs, with NaCl evoking a higher probability of leg withdrawal movements on the foreleg. Moreover, sucrose was less effective than NaCl at evoking withdrawal movements of the foreleg, particularly at low concentrations. The gradients in behavioural responses can be partially attributed to differences in the responsiveness and density of the contact chemoreceptors. These results may reflect the different specialization of individual legs, with the forelegs particularly involved in food selection.  相似文献

Abstract. Peak-to-trough electroantennogram amplitudes (bursts), caused by the individual filaments of a plume of female pheromone, diminish as high-emission-rate sources are approached by male Grapholita molesta , and this reduction is correlated with in-flight arrestment (ceasing to advance upwind). These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that one cause of in-flight arrestment in response to high-concentration point sources is the attenuation of the peak-to- trough amplitudes close to the source. High burst frequency, high pheromone flux, or low levels of continuous neuronal activity all are less well correlated with arrestment. Rather, arrestment appears due to a reduction of chemosensory input to the CNS during flight up the plume, even though the actual molecular concentration continues to increase. In a laboratory wind tunnel, upwind flight initiation by more than 20% of males was elicited only by pheromone source concentrations evoking significant fluctuations in EAG amplitudes at downwind release points. The burst frequencies that evoked high levels of upwind flight initiation ranged from a mean of 0.4-2.2 bursts/s. Because a previous study revealed that flying male G. molesta change their course angle within 0.15 s of losing or contacting pheromone, these EAG burst frequencies indicate that during flight in a pheromone plume, many manoeuvres are probably made in response to contact with individual plume filaments. Thus, upwind flight tracks may be shaped by hundreds of steering reactions in response to encounters with individual pheromone filaments and pockets of clean air. Field-recorded EAGs reveal that burst amplitudes diminish from 3 to 30 m downwind of the source, whereas burst frequencies do not, averaging c. 1/s at 3, 10 and 30 m downwind.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The female American cockroach, Periplaneta americana L., produces two sex pheromone components: periplanone-A (PA) and periplanone-B (PB). PB induces male locomotion and upwind orientation. PA, when presented alone, has the same effect but with a higher threshold concentration. When added to PB in the natural ratio, however, PA reduces rather than increases locomotory activity. To examine whether PA affects male orientation in the natural blend, a pheromone source was suspended above the centre of a circular arena. Efforts were made to exclude air movements so that pheromone concentration declined centrifugally. Males walking in a PB gradient spent more time near the source than in the peripheral areas when low doses were presented. At emission rates approximately equivalent to those of a female, however, they were not able to locate the pheromone source as precisely as at lower rates. In contrast, males walking in a PA gradient spent more time in the centre of the arena when the pheromone dosage was increased. When PA was added to natural levels of PB, males walked more slowly and stopped more frequently near the source than with PB alone. Thus PA improves chemo-orientation of males when presented in a natural ratio with PB. A reduction of linear velocity near the pheromone source (an orthokinetic effect) is involved in this process.  相似文献

An HPLC analysis of hemolymph extracts was undertaken to uncover differences between desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, reared under either crowded or isolated conditions. Some differences in the chromatographic pattern could be detected. One of the major peaks in the hemolymph of crowd-reared adults was found to be a minor one in isolated-reared individuals, whereas other peaks increased after solitarization. The differences became even more pronounced after several generations of isolated rearing. The dominant chromatographic peak in hemolymph extracts of the crowd-reared animals was identified as a novel peptide with a molecular mass of 6080Da. Edman degradation in combination with enzymatic fragmentation and quadrupole-time of flight (Q-Tof) mass spectrometry revealed the full sequence: DNADEDTICVAADNKFYLYANSLKLYTCYNQLPKVYVVKPKSQCRSSLSDCPTS. This 54 aa-peptide is very abundant in hemolymph of crowd-reared adults. Its concentration in hemolymph amounts to 0.1mM. To uncover the function, its effects were investigated in several bioassays, so far without positive results. One of the other peaks differentially expressed in the individuals of the two phases was identified as SGPI-2 (MW=3794Da), which is a serine protease inhibitor in locusts.  相似文献

Single, responding males of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis exhibited a dose-dependent movement toward a pheromone source that was derived from incubation or homogenization of female helminths in Tyrode's solution. Increases in female homogenate beyond an optimum concentration resulted in reduced male movement toward the pheromone source. Crowding of male N. brasiliensis prior to their exposure to female pheromone gradients diminished the males' response. However, crowding of females had no effect on response to the pheromone. The locomotory responses of males exposed to various mixed male and female pheromone sources reaffirmed earlier suggestions of a pheromone feedback system in which males influence the pheromone released from females.  相似文献

Mature males of Nauphoeta cinerea produce a sex pheromone 'seducin' which has short-range effects in attracting mature females of the same species. Exposure of newly-emerged adult males to 3.5, 7, 14 or 21 krad of gamma-radiation decreased their life expectancy and affected their mating behaviour. Bioassay of dichloromethane extracts of males showed that radiation doses (14 krad) sufficient to induce sterility did not affect the ability to produce pheromone but significantly reduced the release of pheromone by inhibiting wing-raising. The sterile-male technique using males sterilized by ionizing radiation in air may not be the method of choice for control of Nauphoeta cinerea.  相似文献

First generation hybrid males from crosses between the Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis, and the “univoltine Z-strain” European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis, were examined with respect to behavioral and physiological responses to ACB and ECB pheromones. The hybrid males often flew to the pheromone of ECB Z-strain, but very rarely to the ACB pheromone. We mapped the tuning profiles of each ORN of the F1 hybrids with respect to the relevant pheromone components and a common behavioral antagonist by employing differential cross-adaptation and varying doses of the ligands. In the trichoid sensilla of F1 hybrid males, the three co-compartmentalized ORNs produced spikes that were very difficult to distinguish by size, unlike the parental populations. Comparing the responses to ACB and ECB components at different doses reveals overlapping profiles similar to males of both parental types, but more responsiveness to the ECB pheromone components. We were unable to detect any differences in the ORN tuning profiles when comparing males with different behavioral phenotypes. While the two ECB pheromone races have similar ORN tuning properties that are different from those in ACB, the spike-amplitude patterns of ECB E-strain and ACB have greater homology when compared to ECB Z-strain.  相似文献

Pheromones in relation to aggregation and reproduction in desert locusts   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Abstract. Desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), exhibit a population density-dependent phase polymorphism which includes the gradual change of many morphological, physiological and behavioural characteristics. Many volatiles associated with desert locusts have been identified recently and it is assumed that they are involved in pheromonal control of behaviour and development of locusts. Ovipositing females deposit with their egg pods several volatiles that appear to be attractive to other females resulting – possibly in combination with environmental factors – in an aggregated oviposition. Mature males release several volatiles, among them phenylacetonitrile, which are reported to accelerate sexual maturation in young males. Also, aggregation pheromone systems for hoppers and adults have been described. However, recent studies and publications shed a new light on the postulated effects of some of these volatiles. Gregarious behaviour can undoubtedly be induced by mechanical stimuli. Furthermore, the main component of the adult aggregation pheromone system, phenylacetonitrile, is found to be a repellent obviously not involved in aggregation. Comprehensive studies have demonstrated that phenylacetonitrile is used by mature gregarious males as a courtship inhibition pheromone to enhance mate guarding. Recent progress, contradictory results and perspectives in desert locust pheromone research related to reproduction are summarized and discussed in this paper.  相似文献

Previous studies had demonstrated stage differentiation in the cohesion (aggregation) pheromone systems of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria. In laboratory arena, the nymphal and adult stages responded aggregatively to their own pheromone, but dispersed evenly within the arena in the presence of the other. In the present study, we explored the effects of longer-term contact of field gregarious hopper bands and laboratory crowd-reared nymphs with the major constituent of the adult pheromone. During the first few days, hoppers in treated bands became relatively hyperactive. Over the next few days, their movements became random and they stopped marching as coherent groups, they started to roost for longer periods on vegetations, and they fragmented into smaller and smaller groupings and individuals. When attacked by birds, they demonstrated subdued levels of collective defensive behaviour compared to normal hoppers, and there were clear signs of increased predation and cannibalism at the roosting sites. In cage experiments, crowd-reared nymphs treated with the pheromone component became hyperactive, showed abnormal diel patterns and reduced feeding on plants but increased cannibalism. Our observations show that the major adult pheromone constituent has a solitarising effect on gregarious hoppers. The mechanism underlying this effect and the potential of the agent in desert locust control are discussed.

We investigated the influence of mechanical, visual and contact chemical stimulation on behavioural gregarization of fifth-instar solitarious nymphs of the desert locust. The stimuli were applied in two 2x2 factorial experimental designs, the first with contact chemical and mechanical stimuli, and the second with contact chemical and visual stimulation. Stimulus treatments were applied for a 4-5 h period, after which the behavioural phase state of individual locusts was measured using an assay based on multiple logistic regression analysis of behavioural variables. Mechanical stimulation was provided by showering test insects with millet seeds, thereby excluding the possibility of contact chemical self-stimulation by repeated contact with the same objects. Visual stimulation consisted of the sight of crowd-reared locusts, while contact chemical stimulation was a dichloromethane extract of cuticular hydrocarbons from gregarious nymphs applied to the perch of the test insect. Mechanical stimulation was powerfully gregarizing, whether alone or in combination with contact chemical stimuli. Application of cuticular extract to the perch had no measurable effect on behavioural phase state, either alone or when presented with mechanical or visual stimuli. Visual stimulation alone partly gregarized test locusts. These results appear to conflict with other reports of the gregarizing effect of cuticular hydrocarbons and possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.  相似文献

We studied the formation of trail patterns by Argentine ants exploring an empty arena. Using a novel imaging and analysis technique we estimated pheromone concentrations at all spatial positions in the experimental arena and at different times. Then we derived the response function of individual ants to pheromone concentrations by looking at correlations between concentrations and changes in speed or direction of the ants. Ants were found to turn in response to local pheromone concentrations, while their speed was largely unaffected by these concentrations. Ants did not integrate pheromone concentrations over time, with the concentration of pheromone in a 1 cm radius in front of the ant determining the turning angle. The response to pheromone was found to follow a Weber's Law, such that the difference between quantities of pheromone on the two sides of the ant divided by their sum determines the magnitude of the turning angle. This proportional response is in apparent contradiction with the well-established non-linear choice function used in the literature to model the results of binary bridge experiments in ant colonies (Deneubourg et al. 1990). However, agent based simulations implementing the Weber's Law response function led to the formation of trails and reproduced results reported in the literature. We show analytically that a sigmoidal response, analogous to that in the classical Deneubourg model for collective decision making, can be derived from the individual Weber-type response to pheromone concentrations that we have established in our experiments when directional noise around the preferred direction of movement of the ants is assumed.  相似文献

Solitary and gregarious locusts differ in many traits, such as body color, morphometrics and behavior. With respect to behavior, solitary animals shun each other, while gregarious animals seek each other's company, hence their crowding behavior. General activity, depending on the temperature, occurs throughout the day but is much lower in solitary locusts. Solitary locusts occasionally fly by night while gregarious locusts fly regularly during daytime (swarming). In search of new assays to identify substances that control or modify aspects of (phase) behavior, we designed a simple activity assay, meant to complement existing behavioral measurement tools. The general activity is reflected in the number of wall hits, that is, the number of contacts between the locust and the vertical walls of a small arena. Using this single parameter we were able to quantify differences in total activity of both nymphs and adults of isolation-reared (solitary), regrouped- and crowdreared (gregarious) locusts under different conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that there are inter- and intra-phase dependent differences in activities of 5th instar nymphs afar injections of the three different adipokinetic hormones.  相似文献
