Spatial behaviour and distribution of fishes along a 7.6-km lowland reach of the River Trent, England, were examined using two complementary telemetry techniques: acoustic tracking to assess the movement and activity of common bream Abramis brama (L.) and quantitative echosounding for measuring the density and distribution of fish shoals. Nine adult bream (39.3–53.2 cm) were tracked by means of intraperitoneally implanted acoustic transmitters from 19 July to 12 September 2000. Home range size varied between 0.35 and 5.40 km of river length over this period. Bream were relatively inactive during daylight hours, began moving near dusk, and tended to move throughout the night. A distinct daytime residence area was occupied by most tagged fish on most occasions, while river use at night was more variable between individuals. Mobile echosounding surveys, with the transducer beaming horizontally across the river, conducted at night between July and September 2000, showed a highly contagious fish distribution within the study reach. For 200-m sections of river, there was a negative correlation between the relative frequency of acoustic tracking fixes at night and mean fish densities, as measured by echosounding for targets larger than –50 dB (c. 5-cm long). However, there was a highly significant positive rank correlation between the relative frequency of acoustic tracking fixes and acoustic targets larger than –30 dB (c. 22-cm long), most of which in this river are bream. This suggests that telemetry and echosounding can, in this part of the River Trent, be combined to provide valuable spatial information at individual and population scales for bream.  相似文献

We estimated the effect of the gill‐net fisheries targeted at whitefish (Coregonus sp.) on anadromous sea trout, Salmo trutta, in the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea using separate data for fish species. The analysis of sea trout captures was based on tagging and recapture data collected in 1998–2011, while whitefish data were derived from individual samples of commercial fisheries from the same period. The mesh sizes used in gill‐net fishing and the seasonal and temporal distributions of recaptured sea trout and sampled whitefish were compared in the northern and southern Gulf of Bothnia. The trout had typically spent 1–2 years at sea, and they were mainly immature with a median body length of 40–43 cm at the time of recapture in gill nets. Despite the increase in the minimum permitted landing size from 40 to 50 cm in 2008, the median length of recaptured trout remained unchanged during the study period. Most (59%) of the gillnetted trout were caught in the southern Gulf of Bothnia in gill nets with mesh sizes of 40–45 mm, which were also used in the whitefish fishery (72%). In the northern Gulf of Bothnia, nets with a smaller mesh size of 25–39 mm took 83% of the whitefish catch and 39% from recaptured trout. In both areas, the overlap in mesh sizes used to gill‐net catch whitefish and sea trout increased during the study period. There were clear seasonal and areal differences in the relative probability of sea trout being captured in gill nets, suggesting that carefully tailored spatial and temporal restrictions on gill‐net fisheries could provide a tool to protect young sea trout without causing intolerable difficulties for the fisheries targeting other species.  相似文献

Food consumption, growth, fish length distributions,population sizes and habitat use of the salmonids intwo lakes in the Høylandet area were studied in1986–89. The allopatric brown trout (Salmotrutta L.) in the tarn Røyrtjønna (27 ha) fed mainlyon organisms at the lake surface , crustaceanplankton, Trichoptera and Chironomidae. Only 5% ofthe trout reached an age of 6 years and a length of25 cm. Sexual maturation started at age 3 and a lengthof 14 cm. Through mark – recapture technique thenumber of trout >10 cm was estimated to 115 ha-1.Growth, fish length frequencies and sexualmaturation of the sympatric brown trout and Arcticcharr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) in LakeStorgrønningen (530 ha) were not much different. TheStorgrønningen charr fed chiefly on zooplankton whichby volume represented 33% for the trout. The foodconsumption of Storgrønningen trout was at maximum inJuly with 2.06 mg food (d.w.) per g live fish and forcharr in September with 1.26 mg food. The maximumsize-independent growth rate of trout was 5.2%day-1 in late June, and for charr 4.1%day-1 in late July. Seventy percent of theirseasonal growth took place before 15 August. The charrstayed mainly deeper than 3-4 m, at water temperatures<15 °C. Brown trout stayed mainly the littoralzone and in near surface water of the pelagic. Thenumber of pelagic charr was estimated hydroacusticallyto 50 ind. ha-1. The charr spawn in thelake. Mean numbers of juvenile trout in the twolargest tributaries were 26 and 48 per 100 m2.Their annual length increment was 2.8–3.4 cm. Noindication of acidification or other human inducedimpacts were found. In the past decade improved acoustic hard‐ and software have enabled estimations of abundance and distribution patterns of aquatic organism, including non‐intrusive monitoring of fish migrations and behaviour. In this study, a high frequency acoustic camera (DIDSON‐LR, 1.2 MHz, 0.7 MHz) and a portable split‐beam scientific echo sounder (Simrad EY60, 200 kHz) collected acoustic data on 192 and 157 individuals within 24 hr (19–20 April 2011) in the Mituo reach of the Yangtze River, China. Mean fish length estimated from the acoustic camera data was 18.7 ± 5.6 cm, with an average swimming speed of 0.19 ± 0.13 m s?1. The mean fish target strength (TS) produced by the echo sounder was ?43.8 ± 4.4 dB, which corresponded to 5.7–119.9 cm fish length when converted by three different TS‐length equations. Average swimming speed was 0.11 ± 0.06 m s?1 from the echo sounder. Compared with the actual fish catch by the three layers of drift gill net in the survey area, the target length indicated by DIDSON was more accurate than the EY60 results, which were highly affected by the choice of TS length equations. It was determined that the two devices used synchronously could estimate fish length effectively to investigate their behaviour and distribution.  相似文献

Hatchery brown trout Salmo trutta (1406) of length 5–20 cm were released into a 7.5 ha shallow lake. They were recaptured with 28 multimesh gillnets of a type proposed for use in the Nordic countries and 42 single gillnets of mesh size 8–22 mm (knot to knot). Corrected for the effect of different twine thicknesses, the single nets showed the highest selectivity for 16.5 mm and smaller meshes and the multimesh nets for the larger meshes. The height of the selectivity curves increased exponentially with mesh size, and most distinctly for the multimesh nets. Over a limited range of mesh sizes the selectivity of the two types of net did not differ much. Extended over mesh sizes 10.0–55.0 mm, the catching abilities of the two types of net became considerably different.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for seven fish species from Guijiang River in Guangxi region, China. Fish samples were collected by electrofishing (CWB-2000P, China; 12 V import, 250 V export) and gill nets (length 12 m, height 0.8 m, mesh 10 mm) in January, April, July and October, 2015. The electrofishing was conducted about 2 km long within 2 hr, and ten gill nets were settled over night at each sampling site. All fish were identified and measured in the field immediately. All values for the allometric coefficient (b) of the length–weight equations were within the expected range (2.50–3.50). All values for the coefficient of determination (r2) were above .95 and thus the estimates can be considered reliable.  相似文献

A large scale biomanipulation of pelagic fish by trawling was started in the eutrophic Enonselkä basin (26 km2) of Lake Vesijärvi to improve the water quality which had remained poor in spite of the termination of nutrient loading. The distribution and density of the fish were studied by hydroacoustics before and during the removal. The initial annual fish density varied between 13 000–21 000 fish ha–1 in the study area in August 1984–89. The mass-removal of the fish by pelagic trawling took place in 1989–1992. The catch varied annually between 64 and 92 kg ha–1. Roach (Rutilus rutilus (L.)) and smelt (Osmerus eperlanus (L.)) accounted for c. 85% of the weight of the catch. The mass-removal decreased the pelagic fish density in the Enonselkä basin during the trawling. An increase in the density was observed after the trawling ceased in these years, and the initial density level was reached within one month. The density level after mass-removal remained high compared with oligotrophic lakes. The pelagic fish had a diurnal ascending trend with the decreasing light intensity in August, and the fish were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in the water mass in temperature non-stratified water in autumn than in stratified water in summer. The fish were somewhat deeper in the years of mass-removal than before it. Mass-removal did not affect the individual length of the echosurveyed fish. Fish smaller than c. 15 cm (TS < –44 dB; mainly smelt) were numerically dominant throughout the whole study period.  相似文献

Synopsis The numbers of trout,Salmo trutta, in Granslev », Denmark, were estimated by the removal method on 18 dates from March 1974 to March 1976. Populations density varied from 0.39 to 0.74 trout m–2 in 1974–1975 and from 0.36 to 0.59 m–2 in 1975–1976 and at all times four or five year classes were present. The age structure of the population was unstable and the variable natural survival, immigration into and emigration from the study site could not be separated. An annual growth cycle with the most rapid growth for all year classes taking place from May to early August was found. Statistically significant differences between different years occurred in the growth of the 0,I and II age groups, but no evidence of density-dependent growth was found. The biomass ranged from 35.4 to 9.5 g m–2. The total mean annual biomass was 22.8 and 14.7 g m–2 in the two years and the II group made the greatest contribution, 44 and 48%, respectively. During 1975–1976 the mean annual biomass of each year class only was about two-thirds of that in 1974–1975. Annual production in the two years was 25.7 (range 24.7–28.5) and 12.6 g m–2 (range 11.7–15.0) and the II group accounted for about 46 and 38% of the production. In addition eel,Anguilla anguilla, produced about 0.5 g m–2 yr–2. The unstable age structure of the trout population was compared with trout populations from other streams. The importance of immigration as a recruitment process in middle and lower reaches of streams and of migrations as a mechanism to optimise utilization of the total stream habitat, as well as temperature as a factor controlling the growth rate are discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis The brown trout in Llyn Frongoch, a mature upland reservoir, and its nursery stream was sampled during 1983. The stream stock consisted largely of the 1983 and 1982 year classes, with fish reaching mean lengths of 7.0 and 11.6 cm at one and two years of age. The size and biomass of the stream stock at the beginning of 1983 and 1984 were estimated to be 120 and 125 (1.20 and 1.25 fish m–2) and 1.41 and 0.69 kg (14.1 g m–2 and 6.9 g m–2) respectively. Annual stream production ranged from an estimated minimum of 2.49 kg (24.9 g m–2) to an estimated maximum of 4.59 kg (45.9 g m–2). Both downstream and upstream movements of 0+ juveniles were recorded. The adult spawning stock was estimated at 79 males and 32 females, a sex ratio of 2.5:1, with most spawners belonging to the 1980 yearclass. The average size of the lake stock over the year was estimated to be 1 650 (229 fish ha–1) or 250.8 kg (34.8 kg ha–1). The 1980 yearclass was predominant; there were few fish older than five years. Seasonal variations in netting catches suggested movements to and from the littoral region. Growth in the lake was moderately fast, with fish reaching mean lengths of 21.7 and 27.2 cm by three and four years of age. Fish entering the lake after one year appeared to grow faster than fish which remained in the stream for two years. Annual production in the lake was estimated at 136.7 kg (19.0 kg ha–1). Lake Kilpisjärvi was stocked with a total number of 440 000 migratory and benthic whitefish fry during the period of 1959–1964. Thereafter, the Diphyllobothrium ditremum plerocercoid infection became a problem decreasing the feasibility and commercial exploitation of the whitefish stock. Since dense fish populations may cause stunting, all stockings in the study area were stopped in an attempt to enhance the fisheries. The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of the cessation of the stocking on the growth, condition, catches and D. ditremum infection of the whitefish population. A total of 1594 whitefish were sampled with benthic gill nets. Growth was estimated from length-at-age and mass–length relationship was estimated with a non-linear regression in 1982–1983, 1992–1993 and 1997. Parasite infection was studied in 1992–1993 and 1997. Growth and condition were poor in the beginning of the 1980s. In 1992–1993, the growth and condition of the fish improved as the numerical catch per unit effort decreased from 1982 to 1992. The mean catches of other fish species were low. There were no significant changes in whitefish growth or condition from 1992–1993 to 1997. From the 1970s to 1982–1983, during slow growth and poor condition of the fish, the median gillraker count was decreasing to 19 (min–max 14–26). In 1992–1993, the gillraker count had increased significantly to 23 (min–max 19–26). However, the improved growth and condition did not cause decrease in the D. ditremum burden. On the contrary, based on our own results and literature notes, the parasite abundance seems to increase during the observation period of 1964–1997.  相似文献

Nearly all mountain lakes in the western United States were historically fishless, but most now contain introduced trout populations. As a result of the impacts of these introductions on ecosystem structure and function, there is increasing interest in restoring some lakes to a fishless condition. To date, however, the only effective method of fish eradication is the application of rotenone, a pesticide that is also toxic to nontarget native species. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of intensive gill netting in eradicating the trout population from a small subalpine lake in the Sierra Nevada, California. We removed the resident trout population and a second trout population accidentally stocked into the study lake within 18 and 15 gill net sets, respectively. Adult trout were highly vulnerable to gill nets, but younger fish were not readily captured until they reached approximately 110 mm. To determine the utility of gill netting as a fish eradication technique in other Sierra Nevada lakes, we used morphometry data from 330 Sierra Nevada lakes to determine what proportion had characteristics similar to the study lake (i.e., small, isolated lakes with little spawning habitat). We estimated that gill netting would be a viable eradication method in 15–20% of the high mountain lakes in the Sierra Nevada. We conclude that although gill netting is likely to be more expensive and time consuming than rotenone application, it is a viable alternative under some conditions and should be the method of choice when sensitive native species are present.  相似文献

Summary Daily intramuscular injection of cortisol (4 mg kg–1 body weight) in rainbow trout,Salmo gairdneri, for 10 days caused significant increases in the number and individual apical surface area of gill chloride cells per mm2 of filament epithelium. Concomitantly, whole body influxes of sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl) increased. Acute (3 h) intra-arterial infusion of cortisol did not affect whole body Na+ or Cl influx. A significant correlation was observed between both Na+ and Cl influxes and the fractional apical surface area of filament chloride cells in control, sham (saline-injected) and experimental (cortisol-injected) fish. The chloride cells displayed similar ultrastructural modifications in trout undergoing cortisol treatment as in trout transferred to ion-deficient water. These findings suggest the existence of structure/function relationships in which branchial chloride cell morphology is an important determinant of Na+ and Cl transport capacity. We conclude that chronic cortisol treatment enhances whole body Na+ and Cl influxes by promoting proliferation of branchial chloride cells. The results of correlation analysis indicate that the chloride cell is an important site of NaCl uptake in freshwater rainbow trout.  相似文献

Quantitative samples of Gammarus pulex L. taken from a small Danish stream during 1975 showed mean annual population densities varying from 500 m–2 in early May to 5 500 m–2 in late September. The mean annual biomass was 1.5 g dry weight m–2. No discrete cohorts could be distinguished from the size frequency distributions. Annual production, estimated by the size-frequency method, was 3.9 g dry weight M-2 and P/B ratio was 2.6. The contribution to trout energetics may have been as much as 17%.  相似文献

Summary A study of the thermal responses of Na-ATPase and NaK-ATPase activities in microsomes prepared from gill tissue of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) revealed further evidence that the two activities are distinct from one another. Arrhenius plots of the NaK-ATPase from sea water-adapted fish and the Na-ATPase from fresh water-adapted fish were linear (Fig. 4) with estimated activation energies of 19.5 and 7.7 kcal/mole, respectively. The Na-ATPase and NaK-ATPase both showed optimum activity at 45°C (Figs. 2 and 3). The Mg-ATPase from fresh water fish showed a distinct temperature optimum at 24°C (Fig. 1) while Mg-ATPase activity from sea water fish was optimum at temperatures of about 15–24 °C (Fig. 3). The Na+ dependence of the Na-ATPase and the NaK-ATPase was examined at an assay temperature of 37 °C (Fig. 5) and the results compared with those obtained at 13 °C. No apparent differences were noted for the Na-ATPase, but with the NaK-ATPase both theK 0.5 for Na+ and optimum Na+ concentration increased at the higher assay temperature. 为掌握镇江长江豚类省级自然保护区鱼类资源现状,于2020年春季(4月)和秋季(9月)利用水声学频差技术和网具调查方法同步开展鱼类资源调查,评估调查江段鱼类资源时空特征。水声学调查结果表明,调查江段鱼类资源密度均值为(0.094±0.183)尾/m2,鱼类单体目标强度(Target strength, TS)均值为–(57.33±5.69) dB,主要分布在–62.5—–50.5 dB,随着水深的增加, TS逐渐增大;网具调查结果表明,调查江段共采集鱼类758尾、53.53 kg,鉴定鱼类种类达48种,其中以鲤形目(Cypriniformes)鱼类占优,中上层鱼类群体数量和质量占比分别为36.15%和66.12%,长江江豚饵料鱼类(体长小于20 cm、体高小于6 cm、体重小于100 g的中上层鱼类)数量和质量占比分别为23.22%和8.72%。在时间特征上, 4月和9月鱼类资源密度差异不显著(P>0.05), 4月鱼类TS均值小于9月,且4月鱼类平均规格小于9月。在空间特征上,鱼类资源主要分布于和畅洲北汊和焦北滩附近水域,中上层鱼类资源相对较多,且4月鱼类资...  相似文献

The length–weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated of seven fish species from 22 localities in the Pantanal wetland between Mach 2006 and April 2011. Fish were sampled using seven gill nets (20 × 1.5 m; mesh size: 12, 15, 18, 20, 25, 30 and 50 mm between opposing knots) and throw traps (made of 1 m3 metal cubes, covered by a 1.5 mm nylon mesh). Standard length and weight were measured and used to calculate the LWR parameters. Values for parameter b varied from 2.87 (Apistogramma borellii) to 3.29 (Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus) and, such values are within the expected range.  相似文献

The population dynamics of trout (Salmo trutta L.) were studied in two high-altitude streams flowing westwards into the River Eden in northern England. The results from one (Knock Ore Gill), which is accessible to spawners from downstream, were compared with published data from an isolated population in a nearby stream which flows eastward into the River Tees. The Knock Ore Gill trout had a population density of 0.4–0.9 fish m–2, a biomass of 12.4 g m–2, annual production of 12–14 g m–2 year–1 and an instantaneous mortality rate of 0.97 year–1. Comparable values from the Tees tributary were 0.2, 3.3, 2.3 and 0.66 respectively. The Knock Ore Gill population also contrasted with that of the Tees tributary in having reliable recruitment from year to year. These differences were related to differences in the chemistry and spate characteristics of the two streams and to the fact that immigrants from downstream were responsible for over 30% of the annual oviposition in Knock Ore Gill.  相似文献

Due to the rarity of Chinese paddlefish ( Psephurus gladius ), very little information is available on this species. In order to save this critically endangered giant species, four large-range hydroacoustic surveys (using an echo sounder with a 199 kHz, 6.8° split-beam transducer) and capture surveys (by drift nets and setlines) were conducted in the upper Yangtze River during 2006–2008. According to the target strength (TS) study on Polyodon spathula ( Hale et al., 2003 ) and Love's formula about TS-fish length relationships ( Love, 1971 ), the four acoustic surveys identified nine potential targets (TS > −26.29 dB) of P. gladius , two (TS > −22.40 dB) of them very probably the fish species sought. A total of 4762 setlines, 111 anchored setlines and 950 drift net catches were conducted in which 472 large fish specimens of various species were caught. However, no single P. gladius was caught directly. The gear used did not allow quantitative capture over rough ground with deep holes, perhaps allowing some large fish to effectively hide or escape; the hydroacoustic signals indicated this as likely. In any case, it is strongly suggested that P. gladius is on the verge of extinction and further rigid measures are proposed to save the very few remaining specimens.  相似文献

In the River Lobos-Ucero and its tributary the River Avión-Milanos (Duero basin, Old Castile, Central Spain), two limestone streams fed by aquifers, the population of brown trout, as compared with the populations of other European streams, shows a high growth rate, high condition coefficients, short life-span and early age at first maturity. Gonad cycle was also studied. Size distributions of unshed eggs exhibit a dynamic activity with a bi-modal distribution from June onwards, spawning occurred in the last days of November. Fecundity (F) can be predicted from trout length (L, mm) according to the equation: F= –646.47+5.6167 · L. Numbers and standing crop of trout range from 18 to 3903 ind. ha–1 and 3.6 to 452.9 Kg ha–1, reaching higher values in the sites close to the aquifers. Egg production had values of 22.4 and 18.0 eggs m–2 in the Rivers Ucero and Avión-Milanos respectively. Some factors suggested as regulators of these demographical characteristics are discussed in the light of recent literature.  相似文献

Synopsis Parr and resident forms of brown trout,Salmo trutta, from Vangsvatnet Lake, Norway live in freshwater, while migrant forms live in coastal waters during summer and in freshwater during winter. About 80% of parr and residents live at depths <5 m, smolts and migrants are more confined to near-surface water. Brown trout partly segregate by size, age and sex from spring through autumn. More than 90% of parr and residents in the tributaries are 0–2 years old, 2–14 cm in length, in the littoral zone 0–3 years old, 7–24 cm in length, and in the pelagic zone 2–6 years old, 18–32 cm in length. The mean body length of equal-aged fish increases from tributaries through littoral to pelagic zones in the lake. Smolts (2–7 years, 14–29 cm) leave the lake from April through August and return during September–October. Migrants (2–11 years, 23–67 cm) leave the take in April–May and return during August–September; sexually mature fish return earlier than immatures. Female brown trout are less stream-dwelling, but more migrant and pelagic than males. Most individuals in the lake population spend the winter in the littoral zone. In the tributaries, diet differs significantly between age-groups of parr; young fish feed on smaller food items than do older fish. In the lake, parr and residents living in the same habitats feed on the same food items. Littoral brown trout feed mainly on insect larvae and chironomid pupae, pelagic brown trout feed on zooplankton and surface insects. Migrants feed little while staying in freshwater, except for matures which feed on young salmonids and surface arthropods during the 2 first months after they had returned from coastal waters. The results are discussed in relation to growth possibilities and mortality risks of the different habitats.Reprint request to B. Jonsson.  相似文献
