A revision of Leptotheca Thélohan, 1895 is presented. The boundaries that separate Leptotheca from Ceratomyxa Thélohan, 1892 and Sphaerospora Thélohan, 1892 are vague and have been highlighted as an area of concern within myxosporean classification. A survey of the literature revealed 63 species that are currently assigned to Leptotheca and a further 11 species that have been relegated as synonyms in Ceratomyxa, Sphaerospora or Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882. The placement of some species in the genus is unclear and demonstrates the need for a revision. The type-species of Leptotheca (L. agilis Thélohan 1892) has many Ceratomyxa-like characters, such that a minor amendation of the diagnosis of Ceratomyxa will then accept the type-species of Leptotheca, rendering the latter genus its synonym. We propose the suppression of Leptotheca, with all species currently assigned to that genus reassigned to Ceratomyxa, Ellipsomyxa K?ie, 2003, Myxobolus or Sphaerospora on the basis of appropriate morphological and biological traits. The diagnoses of Ceratomyxa and Ellipsomyxa are amended appropriately. Molecular analysis may change the placement of some species in the future; however, the aim of this review was to eliminate the ambiguity of assignment of species in the genera Leptotheca, Ceratomyxa and Sphaerospora by suppressing Leptotheca.  相似文献

In elvers (Anguilla anguilla) imported yearly to a fish farm in Hungary the regular occurrence of a Myxobolus infection was recorded. The parasite produces oval or spherical plasmodia of 0.1–0.2·0.07–0.12mm in the subcutaneous and intermuscular connective tissue of the head. In each piasmodium about 200 to 400 spores develop which differ morphologically from the spores of all Myxobolus species known from the eel and other fishes. Based upon the characteristic location of plasmodia and spore morphology, this parasite is described as a new species, Myxobolus kotlani.  相似文献

Genera Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 and Henneguya Thélohan, 1892 (Myxobolidae) are specious myxozoan genera. They comprise nearly half of overall known myxozoan species diversity. A typical spore feature of Henneguya is the presence of two caudal appendages of the spore valves, which distinguishes them from species of the genus Myxobolus. Several Myxobolus spp., however, were reported to show aberrant spores with Henneguya-like caudal appendages. We found such aberrant spores in Myxobolus tsangwuensis and Myxobolus wulii. We studied the ultrastructure of M. wulii and Myxobolus oralis spores with caudal appendages by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM of these aberrant spores revealed that their caudal appendages have the same ultrastructure as the appendages of Henneguya spp. Small caudal appendages of M. wulii spores observed only on TEM suggested that this character may be often overlooked and more Myxobolus species potentially have the ability to express the caudal appendages on the myxospore. In order to trace the evolution of this character, we performed broad phylogenetic analysis of all species of the family Myxobolidae which are available in GenBank including nearly 300 taxa. We found at least eight independent evolutionary origins of spores with two appendages, three origins of a single appendage and 12 apparent secondary losses of the spore projections. Therefore, genus Henneguya with typical two-tailed myxospores is polyphyletic, however a majority of its species has a common ancestor and groups in the second largest subclade of the Myxobolus clade. We also mapped the biological characteristics (host, site of infection and environment) of Myxobolidae species on the phylogenetic tree. We revealed an evident host-associated evolutionary pattern in all parts of the Myxobolus clade with a distinct and species-rich subclade containing almost exclusively species infecting species of the Order Cypriniformes.  相似文献

Synopsis. Facieplatycauda pratti gen. n., sp. n. and Myxobolus kozloffi sp. n., from the Klamath Lake sucker, Catostomus luxatus (Cope), are described. The new genus is placed in the family Myxobolidae between Henneguya and Myxobolus. The spore valves beyond the sporoplasmic space are broad and long but not attenuated as an inverted triangle as in certain species of Myxobolus with tails, or of Henneguya with sometimes bifurcated tails. An organism resembling Myxobolus insidiosus (Wyatt & Pratt) was found in the muscle of the body of Salmo clarki (Richardson). Differences in spore structure and site of infection suggest this is a subspecies of the previous form which should be designated Myxobolus insidiosus clarki. A previously unreported species of Myxobolus from Cottus aleuticus (Gilbert) is also described.  相似文献

Five new species of the genus Myxobolus (Myxosporea) infecting the fresh-water carps are described. M. bhadrensis n. sp. was noticed in the musculature of the fry of Labeo rohita, collected from Bhadra Fish Seed Farm, in September 1979; and M. shettii, M. vedavatiensis, M. venkateshi, and M. hosadurgensis n. spp. were found in the gills of Cirrhina mrigala sampled from Vanivilasa Sagar Fish Farm in April 1980. Although Myxobolus spp. from cyprinid fishes are generally characterised by a strict host-specificity, this study has found that the breams Abramis brama (L.), Blicca bjoerkna (L.) and Vimba vimba (L.) may be infected by the same Myxobolus spp. It is demonstrated that M. macrocapsularis Reuss, 1906, a parasite of the gill filaments of B. bjoerkna, can also infect A. brama. In the same way, M. bliccae Donec & Tozyyakova, 1984, also a parasite of B. bjoerkna, can also occur in V. vimba. The molecular sequences of M. macrocapsularis spores from B. bjoerkna and A. brama were 100% identical. Two of the 18S rDNA sequences of three replicate samples of M. bliccae from B. bjoerkna were 100% identical, whereas the third sequence exhibited a 99.7% similarity with sequences from V. vimba. M. bliccae sequences of spores collected from V. vimba showed a 99.8% similarity to the first two isolates and 99.6% to the third. Data obtained by morphological, histological and molecular biological methods all suggest that Myxobolus spp., known for their strict host-specificity, may sometimes infect several closely related cyprinids.  相似文献

A group of red-bellied piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri Kner, recently imported from Peru exhibited multifocal, cutaneous ulcerations with exposure of the underlying musculature. Skin scrapes yielded moderate numbers of myxospores morphologically consistent with Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882. Myxospores from these fish were morphologically and molecularly distinct from other myxobolids infecting piranha. Myxospores are pyriform to capsular with a rounded posterior and slightly rounded to tapering anterior aspect in valvular view. Myxospore bodies are 14.3–17.8 (mean 16.1) µm long and 7.6–10.3 (mean 8.9) µm wide. Polar capsules are symmetrical, slender, elongate, and measure 7.4–10.2 (mean 9.2) µm long and 2.1–3.7 (mean 3.0) µm wide. Sequence generated for the 18S rRNA gene had no direct matches to any sequence available on GenBank but demonstrated less than 89% nucleotide similarity to various published and unpublished Myxobolus spp. from Piaractus brachypomus (Cuvier) and Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier). This paper provides the morphological and molecular characterisation of Myxobolus dermatoulcerans n. sp. from red-bellied piranha and describes associated pathological lesions.

Five new species of myxosporean parasite are described from cultured tilapias in Israel. These are: Myxosoma sarigi. Myxosoma equatorialis, Myxobolus israelensis. Myxobolus agolus, and Myxobolus galilaeus. The first four were found in hybrids of Oreochromis aureus x Oreochromis niloticus while Myxobolus galilaeus was found in Sarolherodon galilaeus. In addition, M. sarigi. M. israelensis, and Myxobolus sp. were also found in S. galilaeus. In the light of the present study, the taxonomy of myxosporean infections in tilapias is modified. Mature spores may localize in the melano-macrophage centers of the spleen and kidney where ihey may eventually be destroyed. Nc cases of mortality have so far been associated with these parasites.  相似文献

This paper presents the morphological, histological, molecular and ultrastructural data on Myxobolus lomi sp. nov., a parasite of the gill filaments of Prochilodus lineatus from the Peixes River (48º06′38″W; 22º 49′53.1″S), São Paulo State, Brazil. From 20 P. lineatus specimens examined, 90.0% (n = 18) were infected. The plasmodia were white and round, measuring 250 to 300 μm in diameter and the development occurred in the base of the gill filament. The spores showed symmetrical and smooth valves, with the polar filament having 8 to 11 coils. A thorough comparison with all the Myxobolus species described so far is provided. A partial sequencing of the 18S rDNA gene revealed approximately 1600-bp. The Myxobolus species parasite of P. lineatus did not match any of the Myxozoa available in GenBank. In the phylogenetic analysis, M. lomi sp. nov. is clustered with ten other species and only four of these parasites were from gills. Histological analysis of P. lineatus gills infected by M. lomi sp. nov. revealed numerous well-delimited cysts at the base of the primary lamella, between connective tissue and bone, next to the gill arteries. However no pronounced inflammatory response was found at the infection site.  相似文献

Two new species of Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 (Bivalvulida: Myxobolidae) are described from the gill and scales of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu Lacepède, 1802 [Centrarchiformes: Centrarchidae]) from the Watauga River, French Broad River Basin, North Carolina, United States. Myxobolus intralamina n. sp. infects the lumen of the lamellar arterioles and Myxobolus infrabractea n. sp. infects the inner surface of the scale. They differ from all congeners by a combination of myxospore dimensions, polar tubule coil count, and the presence or absence of an iodinophilic vacuole in the sporoplasm and an intercapsular process. A phylogenetic analysis of the small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) recovered M. intralamina n. sp. sister to Myxobolus lepomis and Myxobolus branchiarum and M. infrabractea n. sp. sister to Myxobolus micropterii in a clade composed of five Myxobolus spp. infecting centrarchids and Henneguya spp. (Myxobolidae) infecting percids. Histological sections of infected gill revealed intra-lamellar plasmodia of M. intralamina n. sp. within the lumen of the lamellar arterioles and plasmodia of M. infrabractea n. sp. developing beneath the scales. These new species comprise the first species of Myxobolus reported from a black bass (Micropterus Lacepède, 1802) in the Southeast United States.  相似文献

Myxobolus species represents a group of cosmopolitan metazoan parasites commonly harbored in the farmed and wild fish populations. Here, a species of Myxobolus is found in the kidney of an exotic mrigal Cirrhinus mrigala feral in the Yangtze River and utilized for an integrative characterization. Ellipsoidal myxospores are measured at 15.68 ± 0.8 (13.93–17.11) × 11.42 ± 0.54 (10.34–12.3) × 7.94 ± 0.35 (7.58–8.5) μm in dimension. The polar capsules are pyriform, and unequal in size. The morphological and morphometric characteristics of the present isolates are distinct from those of other congeners. Molecularly, the pairwise comparison based on the SSU rDNA sequence indicates that the present amplicon does not match any sequences available in the GenBank database and shares the highest similarity of 92.12% to Myxobolus pavlovskii (MG520369). Accordingly, we propose a name Myxobolus shuifuensis sp. n. for the present isolates. Phylogenetical trees indicate an apparent host-associated phylogenetic pattern. M. shuifuensis sp. n. groups loosely with other Myxobolus species isolated from Cirrhinus fish. Insead, it forms a sister clade to some myxosporeans belonging to the Thelohanellus genus. This result underpins the species identification and provides evidence for challenging the taxonomic separation among both morphologically comparable genera.  相似文献

There are over 100 species in the Order Clevelandellida distributed in many hosts. The majority is assigned to one of the five families, the Nyctotheridae. Our knowledge of clevelandellid genetic diversity is limited to species of Nyctotherus and Nyctotheroides. To increase our understanding of clevelandellid genetic diversity, species were isolated from intestines of the Australian wood‐feeding roach Panesthia cribrata Saussure, 1864 from August to October, 2008. Four morphospecies, similar to those reported in Java and Japan by Kidder [Parasitologica, 29 :163–205], were identified: Clevelandella constricta, Clevelandella nipponensis, Clevelandella parapanesthiae, and Clevelandella panesthiae. Small subunit rRNA gene sequences assigned all species to a “family” clade that was sister to the clade of species assigned to the Family Nyctotheridae in the Order Clevelandellida. Genetics and morphology were consistent for the first three Clevelandella species, but isolates assigned to C. panesthiae were assignable to three different genotypes, suggesting that this may be a cryptic species complex.  相似文献

One inaperturate and 16 monosulcate pollen types are described from the latest Campanian to earliest Maastrichtian sediments of the Vilui basin, Siberia, using both light and scanning electron microscopy, and assigned systematically when possible to modern families or subfamilies. Despite their scant occurrence, the pollen grains show considerable diversity. Two new genera have been erected. Lasioideaecidites with two species, Lasioideaecidites hessei and Lasioideaecidites bogneri, represents the earliest record of the subfamily Lasioideae (Araceae). Aristolochiacidites with one species, Aristolochiacidites viluiensis, is assigned to the subfamily Aristolochioideae (Aristolochiaceae) and represents the first fossil pollen record of the family. A new species of Liliacidites, Liliacidites goldblattii, is closely similar to pollen of Isophysioideae (Iridaceae) and/or Doryanthaceae and is the first fossil evidence of the clade that includes these closely related families. A further nine new fossil species are described (Clavatipollenites timerdyakhensis, Liliacidites palaeofritillaria, Retimonocolpites longosucatus, R. microreticulatus, R. microrugulatus, R. lysichitonoides, R. chapmaniae, Monosulcites parvus and Arecipites tyungensis) and assigned to Chloranthaceae, Araceae (Orontioideae, ?Pothoideae), Liliaceae, ?Hypoxidaceae and Arecaceae. The Hydatellaceae (Nymphaeales) may also be present in the palynoflora of the Vilui Basin, represented by pollen similar to M. rivularis Braman from the Santonian to Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) Milk River Formation, Canada.  相似文献
