The adsorption of copper(II) ions on to dehydrated wheat bran (DWB), a by-product of the flour process, was investigated as a function of initial pH, temperature, initial metal ion concentration and adsorbent dosage. The optimum adsorption conditions were initial pH 5.0, initial copper concentration 100 mg l−1, temperature 60 °C and adsorbent dosage 0.1 g. The adsorption equilibrium was described well by the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacity of 51.5 mg g−1 of copper(II) ions on DWB. The observation of an increase in adsorption with increasing temperature leads to the result that the adsorption of copper(II) ions on DWB is endothermic in nature. The thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy, free energy and entropy changes were calculated and these values show that the copper(II)-DWB adsorption process was favoured at high temperatures.  相似文献

In the presence of insoluble metal oxides (industrial filter dust, zinc oxide, synthetic mixture of metal oxides), Penicillium simplicissimum developed the ability to excrete considerable amounts of citric acid (>100 mM). Parallel with the increase of citric acid concentration in the culture broth, zinc was solubilized from zinc oxide. The adsorption of filter dust onto the mycelium (the pellets formed were less than 1 mm in diameter) was required for not only the citric acid excretion but also the leaching of zinc. When the filter dust was replaced with a synthetic mixture of metal oxides or with zinc oxide in combination with trace elements, levels of adsorption and citric acid production were observed to be similar to those in experiments where industrial filter dust was used. The two most important properties of the filter dust were its heavy-metal content and its buffering capacity. These properties were simulated by adding heavy metals in soluble form (as chlorides, sulfates, or nitrates) or soluble buffers to the medium. Both heavy metals and buffers were not able to induce a citric acid efflux. As with citric acid production by Aspergillus niger, the addition of manganese lowered citric acid excretion (by 40% with metal oxide-induced citric acid efflux and by 100% with urea-induced citric acid efflux). Copper antagonized the effect of manganese. The mechanism for the bulk of citric acid excretion by P. simplicissimum, however, seemed to be different from that described for citric acid accumulation by A. niger. Because of the inefficiency of metals in solubilized form and of soluble buffers to induce a strong citric acid efflux, adsorption of an insoluble metal compound (zinc oxide) turned out to be essential. Surface phenomena possibly involving the plasma membrane H+-ATPase are thought to participate in the induction of citric acid excretion by P. simplicissimum in the presence of industrial filter dust.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to develop a low cost adsorbent for wastewater treatment. The prime objective of this study was to search for suitable freshwater filamentous algae that have a high heavy metal ion removal capability. This study evaluated the biosorption capacity from aqueous solutions of the green algae species, Spirogyra and Cladophora, for lead (Pb(II)) and copper (Cu(II)). In comparing the analysis of the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) by these two types of biosorbents showed a better fit with the Langmuir isotherm model. In the adsorption of heavy metal ions by these two types of biosorbents, chemical and physical adsorption of particle surfaces was perhaps more significant than diffusion and adsorption between particles. Continuous adsorption-desorption experiments discovered that both types of biomass were excellent biosorbents with potential for further development.  相似文献

This study was conducted in order to understand the mechanism of Cd and Pb adsorption in aqueous solutions by raw and modified saw dust (SD) of Alstonia macrophylla. The biosorbent was characterized by Boehm titration, specific surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersion (EDAX), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. SD was treated using organic acids and bases. Batch studies were conducted for raw and modified SD to determine the effect of initial concentration, pH, ionic strength, and contact time on metal adsorption. The specific surface area and total basic and acidic groups of SD were 77 m2/g and 1521 and 2312 μmol/g, respectively. The adsorption of both metals onto SD was pH dependent. No ionic strength dependency was observed in adsorption of Cd and Pb at pH >6, indicating inner sphere surface complexation. Monolayer adsorption is dominant in both metal sorptions by SD. Furthermore, there is no competition between metals on adsorption and raw SD was found to be suitable for removal of Cd and Pb as compared to organic acid– or base-treated SD. Maximum adsorption capacity of SD for Cd and Pb were 30.6 and 204.2 mg/g, respectively. Results indicate that the A. macrophylla SD can be considered as a potential material for metal ion removal from wastewater.  相似文献

Tamarind fruit shell (TFS) was converted to a cation exchanger (PGTFS-SP-COOH) having a carboxylate functional group at the chain end by grafting poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate) onto TFS (a lignocellulosic residue) using potassium peroxydisulfate-sodium thiosulfate redox initiator, and in the presence of N, N ′-methylenebisacrylamide as a cross-linking agent, followed by functionalization. The chemical modification was investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and potentiometric titrations. The feasibility of PGTFS-SP-COOH for the removal of heavy metals such as U(VI), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Co(II) ions from aqueous solutions was investigated by batch process. The optimum pH range for the removal of meal ions was found to be 6.0. For all the metal ions, equilibrium was attained within 2 h. The kinetic and isotherm data, obtained at optimum pH value 6.0, could be fitted with pseudo-second-order equation and Sips isotherm model, respectively. The Sips maximum adsorption capacity for U(VI), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Co(II) ions at 30°C was found to be 100.79, 65.69, 65.97, and 58. 81 mg/g, respectively. Increase of ionic strength decreased the metal ion adsorption. Different wastewater samples were treated with PGTFS-SP-COOH to demonstrate its efficiency in removing metal ions from wastewater. The adsorbed metal ions on PGTFS-SP-COOH can be recovered by treating with 1.0 M NaCl + 0.5 M HCl for U(VI) ions and 0.2 M HCl for Cu(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) ions. Four adsorption/desorption cycles were performed without significant decrease in removal capacity. The results showed that PGTFS-SP-COOH developed in this study exhibited considerable adsorption potential for the removal of U(VI), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Co(II) ions from water and wastewaters.  相似文献

The adsorption of iron(III), lead(II) and cadmium(II) ions onto Schizomeris leibleinii, a green alga, was studied with respect to initial pH, temperature, initial metal ion and biomass concentration to determine the optimum adsorption conditions. Optimum initial pH for iron(III), lead(II) and cadmium(II) ions were 2.5, 4.5 and 5.0 at optimum temperature 30°C, respectively. The initial adsorption rates increased with increasing initial iron(III), lead(II) and cadmium(II) ion concentrations up to 100, 100 and 150 mg l−1, respectively. The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms were developed at various initial pH and temperature values. The adsorption of these metal ions to S. leibleinii was investigated in a two-stage mixed batch reactor. The residual metal ion concentrations (Ceq) at equilibrium at each stage for a given ‘quantity of dried algae (X0)/volume of solution containing heavy metal ion (V0)’ ratio were calculated using Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm constants. The experimental biosorption equilibrium data for iron(III), lead(II) and cadmium(II) ions were in good agreement with those calculated by both Freundlich and Langmuir models. The adsorbed iron(III), lead(II) and cadmium(II) ion concentrations increased with increasing X0/V0 ratios while the adsorbed metal quantities per unit mass of dried algae decreased.  相似文献

The shell of the seed of Chrysophyllum albidum carbon was used to adsorb lead (Pb) from aqueous solution, the sorption process with respect to its equilibria and kinetics as well as the effects of pH, contact time, adsorbent mass, adsorbate concentration, and particle size on adsorption were also studied. The most effective pH range was found to be between 4.5 and 5 for the sorption of the metal ion. The first-order rate equation by Lagergren was tested on the kinetic data and the adsorption process followed first-order rate kinetics. Isotherm data were analyzed for possible agreement with the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms; the Freundlich and Langmuir models for dynamics of metal ion uptake proposed in this work fitted the experimental data reasonably well. However, equilibrium sorption data were better represented by Langmuir model than Freundlich. The adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm was 72.1 mg Pb (II) g- 1 at initial pH of 5.0 at 30°C for the particle size of 1.00 to 1.25 mm with the use of 2.0 g/100 ml adsorbent mass. The structural features of the adsorbent were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry; the presence of hydroxyl, carbonyl, amide, and phosphate groups confirms the potential mechanism adsorption of the adsorbent. This readily available adsorbent is efficient in the uptake of Pb (II) ion in aqueous solution, thus, it could be an excellent alternative for the removal of heavy metals and organic matter from water and wastewater.  相似文献

Biosorption is an innovative and alternative technology to remove heavy metal pollutants from aqueous solution using live, inactive and dead biomasses such as algae, bacteria and fungi. In this study, live and dried biomass of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Funalia trogii was applied as heavy metal adsorbent material. Biosorption of copper(II) cations in aqueous solution by live and dried biomass of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Funalia trogii was investigated to study the effects of initial heavy metal concentration, pH, temperature, contact time, agitation rate and amount of fungus. Copper(II) was taken up quickly by fungal biomass (live or dried) during the first 15 min and the most important factor which affected the copper adsorption by live and dried biomass was the pH value. An initial pH of around 5.0 allowed for an optimum adsorption performance. Live biomass of two white rot fungi showed a high copper adsorption capacity compared with dried biomass. Copper(II) uptake was found to be independent of temperature in the range of 20–45 °C. The initial metal ion concentration (10–300 mg/L) significantly influenced the biosorption capacity of these fungi. The results indicate that a biosorption as high as 40–60 % by live and dried biomass can be obtained under optimum conditions.  相似文献

Persimmon waste was chemically modified with dimethylamine (DMA) to obtain a tertiary-amine-type gel, named DMA persimmon waste gel (DMA-PW). It was found to be effective for the adsorption of Au(III), Pd(II), and Pt(IV) in hydrochloric acid medium. In contrast, base metals such as Cu(II), Zn(II), Fe(III), and Ni(II) were not practically adsorbed. The formation of ion pairs of the metal chloro complex anions with the protonated adsorption gels was proposed as the main adsorption process. The gel exhibited selectivity only for precious metals with a remarkably high capacity for Au(III), i.e., 5.63 mol/kg dry gel and comparable capacities, i.e., 0.42 and 0.28 mol/kg for Pd(II) and Pt(IV), respectively. According to the kinetic and electrochemical studies, the adsorption rate of Au(III) was greatly enhanced by the chemical modification. Also, its excellent adsorption characteristics for the precious metals were confirmed by adsorption and elution tests using a column packed with the DMA-PW gel.  相似文献

An effective heavy metal ion adsorbent was prepared by a simple amine modification on mycelium from biomass of penicillin fermentation. The maximum adsorption capacity for Ni2+ could reach 260 mg/g after modification. The adsorbed Ni2+ could be easily desorbed by 0.01% EDTA or 0.2–0.5% HCl solution. The mechanical strength of the adsorbent was also improved after modification and the new adsorbent could be reused for at least 10 cycles without losing its uptake. The low cost adsorbent has a potential in large scale heavy metal ion wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Biosorption is potentially an attractive technology for treatment of wastewater for retaining heavy metals from dilute solutions. This study investigated the feasibility of anaerobic granules as a novel type of biosorbent, for lead, copper, cadmium, and nickel removal from aqueous solutions. Anaerobic sludge supplied from a wastewater treatment plant in the province of Quebec was used. Anaerobic granules are microbial aggregates with a strong, compact and porous structure and excellent settling ability. After treatment of the biomass with Ca ions, the cation exchange capacity of the biomass was approximately 111 meq/100 g of biomass dry weight which is comparable to the metal binding capacities of commercial ion exchange resins. This work investigated the equilibrium, batch dynamics for the biosorption process. Binding capacity experiments using viable biomass revealed a higher value than those for nonviable biomass. Binding capacity experiments using non-viable biomass treated with Ca revealed a high value of metals uptake. The solution initial pH value affected metal sorption. Over the pH range of 4.0-5.5, pH-related effects were not significant. Meanwhile, at lower pH values the uptake capacity decreased. Time dependency experiments for the metal ions uptake showed that adsorption equilibrium was reached almost 30 min after metal addition. It was found that the q(max) for Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions, were 255, 60, 55, and 26 mg/g respectively (1.23, 0.53, 0.87, and 0.44 mmol/g respectively). The data pertaining to the sorption dependence upon metal ion concentration could be fitted to a Langmiur isotherm model. Based on the results, the anaerobic granules treated with Ca appear to be a promising biosorbent for removal of heavy metals from wastewater due to its optimal uptake of heavy metals, its particulate shape, compact porous structure, excellent settling ability, and its high mechanical strength.  相似文献

Heavy metals can be adsorbed by living or non-living biomass. Submerged aquatic plants can be used for the removal of heavy metals. In this paper, lead, zinc, and copper adsorption properties of Ceratophyllum demersum (Coontail or hornwort) were investigated and results were compared with other aquatic submerged plants. Data obtained from the initial adsorption studies indicated that C. demersum was capable of removing lead, zinc, and copper from solution. The metal biosorption was fast and equilibrium was attained within 20 min. Data obtained from further batch studies conformed well to the Langmuir Model. Maximum adsorption capacities (q(max)) onto C. demersum were 6.17 mg/g for Cu(II), 13.98 mg/g for Zn(II) and 44.8 mg/g for Pb(II). Kinetics of adsorption of zinc, lead and copper were analysed and rate constants were derived for each metal. It was found that the overall adsorption process was best described by pseudo second-order kinetics. The results showed that this submerged aquatic plant C. demersum can be successfully used for heavy metal removal under dilute metal concentration.  相似文献

Marine algae Gelidium and algal composite material were investigated for the continuous removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution in a packed bed column. The biosorption behaviour was studied during one sorption–desorption cycle of Cu(II) in the flow through column fed with 50 and 25 mg l−1 of Cu(II) in aqueous solution, at pH 5.3, leading to a maximum uptake capacity of ≈13 and 3 mg g−1, respectively, for algae Gelidium and composite material. The breakthrough time decreases as the inlet copper concentration increases, for the same flow rate. The pH of the effluent decreases over the breakthrough time of copper ions, which indicates that ion exchange is one of the mechanisms involved in the biosorption process. Temperature has little influence on the metal uptake capacity and the increase of the ionic strength reduces the sorption capacity, decreasing the breakthrough time. Desorption using 0.1 M HNO3 solution was 100% effective. After two consecutive sorption–desorption cycles no changes in the uptake capacity of the composite material were observed. A mass transfer model including film and intraparticle resistances, and the equilibrium relationship, for adsorption and desorption, was successfully applied for the simulation of the biosorption column performance.  相似文献

Heavy metal resistant bacteria are of great interest because of their potential use in bioremediation. Understanding the survival and adaptive strategies of these bacteria under heavy metal stress is important for better utilization of these bacteria in remediation. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of bacterial extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) in detoxifying against different heavy metals in Bacillus sp. S3, a new hyper antimony-oxidizing bacterium previously isolated from contaminated mine soils. The results showed that Bacillus sp. S3 is a multi-metal resistant bacterial strain, especially to Sb(III), Cu(II) and Cr(VI). Toxic Cd(II), Cr(VI) and Cu(II) could stimulate the secretion of EPS in Bacillus sp. S3, significantly enhancing the adsorption and detoxification capacity of heavy metals. Both Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix (3D-EEM) analysis further confirmed that proteins were the main compounds of EPS for metal binding. In contrast, the EPS production was not induced under Sb(III) stress. Furthermore, the TEM–EDX micrograph showed that Bacillus sp. S3 strain preferentially transported the Sb(III) to the inside of the cell rather than adsorbed it on the extracellular surface, indicating intracellular detoxification rather than extracellular EPS precipitation played an important role in microbial resistance towards Sb(III). Together, our study suggests that the toxicity response of EPS to heavy metals is associated with difference in EPS properties, metal types and corresponding environmental conditions, which is likely to contribute to microbial-mediated remediation.

ABSTRACT Soil heavy metal contamination, a major threat due to industrialization, can be tackled by an efficient and economical process called bioremediation. Mushrooms are employed to accumulate heavy metals from soil due to their high metal accumulation potential and better adaptability. The bioaccumulation potential of Galerina vittiformis was already reported for individual metals. At natural conditions, since soil consists of more than one polluting metal, more focus has to be given to multimetal systems. In this study, multimetal accumulation potential was analyzed using central composite design, and the responses obtained were analyzed using response surface methodology. Heavy metals such as Cu(II), Cd(II), Cr(VI), Pb(II), and Zn(II) were subjected to biosorption at 10–250 mg/kg concentrations along with pH 5–8. The results showed that the preference of the organism for the five metals under study was in the order Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Cd(II) > Cu(II) > Cr(VI) at pH 6.5 under multimetal condition. The study also indicates that the metal interaction pattern in multimetal interaction is a property of their ionic radii. The response surface methodology clearly explains the effect of interaction of heavy metals on the accumulation potential of the organism using three-dimensional response plots. The present work suggests that the fungus Galerina vittiformis could be employed as a low-cost metal removal agent from heavy metal–polluted soil.  相似文献

Effects of various concentrations of two heavy metals, namely Cd and Cu, on gametophytes of Laminariajaponica Aresch were determined by recording morphological changes of gametophytes, determining pH values and the heavy metal content of the culture solution, calculating the germination rate of sporophytes, and observing heavy metal (Cd) distribution using a fluorescence microscope. The results showed that heavy metals damaged the gametophytes, and were even lethal, and that the higher the concentration of heavy metal ions, the greater the injury to gametophytes. Gametophytes could not survive in culture solutions containing more than 100 mg/L Cd and 50 mg/L Cu and were only able to survive in culture solution containing a mixture of Cd and Cu up to a concentration of 10 mg/L, which indicates that gametophytes have a higher tolerance to Cd than Cu and that multiple heavy metal ions in solution markedly aggravate the damage to gametophytes compared with individual heavy metal ions. With increases in the concentration of the heavy metal, the burgeoning rate of sporophytes decreased acutely, and solutions containing multiple heavy metal ions caused even more marked harm to sporophytes than solutions containing a single heavy metal ion, because most sporophytes died in mixed solutions. The pH value of the culture medium dropped immediately at the beginning (the first day) of treatment, increased over the following days, and then decreased again. The pH of culture media containing multiple heavy metal ions showed greater variation than media containing a single heavy metal ion, with the extent of the decrease in pH of culture media containing multiple ions being greatest during the last period of the experiment. With increases in the concentration of heavy metals, the capacity of gametophytes to accumulate these ions increased. The blue fluorescent light emitted by the Cd-and Cd-binding protein complex existing in gametophytes in media containing different concentrations of Cd showed clearly the distribution of the ion in gametophytes and the results obtained were consistent with distribution determined using other methods. All results of the present study showed that gametophytes of L. japonica play a remarkable role as heavy metal decontaminators, especially with regard to Cd.  相似文献

Adsorption of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) on modified jute fibres   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The potential of a lignocellulosic fibre, jute, was assessed for adsorption of heavy metal ions like Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) from their aqueous solutions. The fibre was also used as adsorbent after chemically modifying it by two different techniques viz, loading of a dye with specific structure, C.I. Reactive Orange 13, and oxidising with hydrogen peroxide. Both the modified jute fibres gave higher metal ion adsorption. Thus, the dye loaded jute fibres showed metal ion uptake values of 8.4, 5.26 and 5.95 mg/g for Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II), respectively, while the corresponding values for oxidised jute fibres were 7.73, 5.57 and 8.02 mg/g, as against 4.23, 3.37 and 3.55 mg/g for unmodified jute fibres. Adsorption isotherm models indicated best fit for Langmuir model for the modified jute fibres. The adsorption values decreased with lowering of pH. The desorption efficiency, regenerative and reuse capacity of these adsorbents were also assessed for three successive adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorptive capacity was retained only when the caustic soda regeneration is carried out as an intermediate step after desorption. Possible mechanism has been given.  相似文献

Runoff with contaminated urban soil has an environmental risk to the aquatic environment. An assessment of heavy metals in street dust particles from a small town and their risks to the township stream network were conducted at Yangtze River delta. This assessment is based on measurement of heavy metal contents in dust particles with different particle sizes, river sediments, and suspended solids of urban runoff. The ranges of heavy metal content were 0.8–4.3, 16–380, 69–240, 9.3–350, 9.6–863 and 67–1170 mg/kg dry street dust, for Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, respectively. Approximately 63%-71% of heavy metals were associated with particles less than 250 μ m; this particle size accounted for 40% of the total mass of street dusts. Of the five land use areas, the industrial areas had the highest heavy metal level. The smaller particle size fraction has a higher heavy metal content, low density, high mobility in runoff, and thus is a higher risk to the stream network. The topographical and hydrological features of the landscape also influence the transport of the contaminated street dusts to the aquatic environment.  相似文献
