Summary Significantly more females reared on bedding soiled by different populations reproduced by 100 days of age than those reared on bedding soiled by the same populations (P<.1) or on clean bedding (P<.025) whereas the latter two groups did not differ significantly. Significantly greater percentages of females reproduced in both treatments maintained on soiled bedding than was true in the populations from which the bedding came. There were no significant differences between treatments in the weights of the reproductive organs (testes, seminal vesicles, ovaries, uteri) or in the numbers of corpora lutea or mature follicles in the ovaries of nulliparous females. The data suggest that if there were reproductively inhibiting pheromones influencing the population animals, they were altered or dissipated immediately after removal of the bedding from the population enclosures or that they were nonfunctional in the absence of the population animals. These data further suggest that the reproductive inhibition of population young is due to the presence of the populaton animals and that sociobiological factors within the populations act to prevent the reproductively stimulating influence of materials which may be present.  相似文献

Musk shrews were maintained from weaning (20 days of age) for 20 or 40 days in one of several social conditions. In Exp. 1, young males housed with adult females gained more weight and had heavier sex accessory organs than did young males housed with an adult male or reared alone. In Exp. 2 this same pattern of accelerated growth and sexual maturation was found when males were reared directly with an adult female or in a split cage where a wire barrier served to separate the male and his adult female cagemate. In Exp. 3, males were reared in cages containing clean or soiled bedding: soiled bedding was taken once every 5 days from the cage of an adult male, or a female. Under these conditions differences in the weights of reproductive tissues showed minimal variation with housing condition after 20 days of treatment. At that time males reared in soiled bedding taken from the cage of an adult female had accelerated development compared with control males. In Exp. 4, males were housed alone or in a split cage with an adult female which was separated by a wire mesh or a solid, opaque barrier. Males separated by a solid barrier from their female cagemates for 40 days had reproductive tissue weights equivalent to those measured in males reared alone. Taken together these results suggest that the presence of an adult female has dramatic effects on body growth and development of reproductive target tissues in young male musk shrews. Male-female social interactions could play an important role in the timing of puberty in this opportunistically breeding tropical mammal.  相似文献

Soiled bedding and urine from adult female white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were tested for their capacity to inhibit reproduction of young females. Test animals were given either physical or airborne contact with soiled bedding from adult females, adult female urine, clean bedding, or water from 21 to 150 days of age. Results indicate that reproductive inhibition is due to an airborne pheromone emitted by the adult females as a component of their urine. In the second experiment, young female mice were exposed to an adult female for 0, 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, or 24 h/day from 21 to 150 days of age. Results from this experiment show that exposure to adult females of as little as 3 h/day was sufficient to cause reproductive inhibition to occur. This phenomenon has important implications in terms of both female-female reproductive competition and socially mediated population regulation.  相似文献

Male and female prairie deermice housed singly from weaning (21 days) until 40 days of age had urine from one of the following sources applied daily to their nostrils: sexually mature laboratory population males or females, and sexually mature breeder males or females from our laboratory colony. Other males and females were treated with water. Records were obtained of the weights of the tests, seminal vesicles and bacula of males and the ovaries and uteri of females at 40 days of age. The major results of this study were as follow: Female urine from sexually mature and inhibited population or isolated mice stimulated the development of the male reproductive organs significantly more than water or male urine. Male urine applied to young males did not differentially affect the weights of their reproductive organs compared with water and thus showed no inhibition effects. The reproductive organs of females treated with male urine did not differ significantly in weight from those of females treated with female urine. Females treated with water developed significantly larger uteri than those treated with urine from sexually mature population females (P≤0.02), inhibited population females (P<0.001) and inhibited population males (P<0.007).  相似文献

Radioimmunoassay (RIA) of prolactin in the prairie deermouse was established and validated. Serum samples were taken from reproductively inhibited animals grown in experimental populations and compared with reproductively capable control animals of both sexes. At the time of assay, serum prolactin concentrations was unaffected by the length of time a control female was exposed to the olfactory stimulation of bedding soiled by her mate or the stage of the estrous cycle as indicated by vaginal cytology. The reproductively inhibited males and females had significantly reduced reproductive organ weights, body weights, and serum prolactin concentrations compared with their respective controls. Also, the relative mean adenohypophysial weight was greater in the inhibited males. Several significant correlations between prolactin and various gravimetric measures are reported for both males and females. Possible relationships between prolactin and other endocrine systems are discussed.  相似文献

Reproductive development of male California voles (Microtus californicus) is delayed when voles are raised in bedding taken from their family. In these experiments the effects of this chemically mediated puberty delay on male reproductive potential were examined. Males were paired with females for a 4-day period; the resultant uterine weights constituted a measure of male potency. In Experiments 1 and 2, 45-day-old males raised in clean or family bedding were paired with females. Regardless of whether cohabitation occurred in a clean, novel cage or in the male's home cage, only males reared in clean bedding caused significant growth of the female reproductive tract. In Experiment 3 the stimulus males were adults, either castrated or intact. Only cohabitation with an intact male stimulated female reproductive development. These data show that chemical cues present in family bedding impair the ability of young males to stimulate reproductive development in females and suggest that this effect is due to low circulating androgen levels in reproductively delayed males. Since chemical cues in bedding from solitary males did not activate uterine growth, the androgen-dependent deficit in delayed males may be behavioral. The relevance of these phenomena to animals living in a natural environment is discussed.  相似文献

Prairie deermice greater than 100 days of age and non-reproductive in laboratory populations provided with surplus food and water were paired either with fertile mates or with other inhibited population animals. Following pairing, more than 75 per cent of all animals reproduced. The rates of reproductive recovery did not differ significantly between males and females. The average time required for reproduction by population animals paired with proven mates was less than that for pairs composed of population animals. The significantly slower rate of reproductive recovery for population pairs suggests that mutual stimulation is involved in recovery and is initially lacking or minimal in these pairs. A period of physiological and behavioural adjustment following removal from the populations appears necessary before reproduction. Mechanisms preventing reproduction within the populations are unknown.  相似文献

Dispersal is one of the most important, yet least understood phenomena of evolutionary ecology. Triggers and consequences of dispersal are difficult to study in natural populations since dispersers can typically only be identified a posteriori. Therefore, a lot of work on dispersal is either of a theoretical nature or based on anecdotal observation. This is especially true for cryptic species such as small mammals. We conducted an experiment on the common vole, Microtus arvalis, in semi‐natural enclosures and investigated the spatial and genetic establishment success of residents and dispersers in their natal and new populations. Our study uses genetic data on the reproductive success of 1255 individuals to measure the fitness trajectories of the residents and dispersing individuals. In agreement with past studies, we found that dispersal was highly male‐biased, and was most probably induced by the agonistic encounters with conspecifics, suggesting it could act as an inbreeding avoidance mechanism. There was low breeding success of dispersers into new populations. Although nearly 26% of identified dispersers reproduced in their natal populations, only seven percent reproduced in the new populations. Settlement appeared to be a pre‐requisite for reproduction in both sexes, and animals that did not spatially settle into a new population dispersed again, usually on the same day of immigration. In the event that dispersers reproduced in the new population, they did so at relatively low population densities. We also found age‐related differences between the sexes in breeding success, and male dispersers that subsequently established in the new population were young individuals that had not reproduced in their natal population, whereas successful females had already reproduced in their natal population. In conclusion, with our detailed field data on establishment and substantial parentage assignments to understand breeding success, we were able to gain an insight into the fitness of dispersers, and how the two sexes optimise their fitness. Taken together, our results help to further understand the relative advantages and costs of dispersal in the common vole.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Studies of reintroduced animals are beneficial to evaluate the success of reintroduction programs and to understand factors influencing fitness of reintroduced individuals. The geographic distribution of the federally threatened Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) has been reduced to 3 isolated populations due to habitat loss and excessive harvest. We reintroduced 23 adult female Louisiana black bears and their cubs to east-central Louisiana, USA, and documented postrelease space use, survival, movements, and reproduction. Individual females used larger home ranges after reintroduction than they had in the source population (P = 0.037). Spring ranges of reintroduced females were smaller than summer, autumn, and annual ranges (all P < 0.09), which did not differ from each other (all P > 0.60). Survival of reintroduced females did not differ between their first (S = 0.933) and second (S = 1.00) year after release or from annual survival of females in the source population (S = 0.964–1.00). Mean straight-line distance traveled by females from their release sites to the center of established home ranges or last recorded locations was 22.7 km. Six females reproduced after reintroduction and produced 15 cubs. Mean postrelease litter size of parturient reintroduced females (2.5) was similar to reported mean litter size of females in the source population (2.4). Our results suggest that the Louisiana reintroduction program is proceeding favorably; however, future studies should continue to monitor survival and reproduction of reintroduced females in Louisiana. Additional demographic parameters (i.e., cub survival) should be estimated to allow for population viability analysis to determine if the new population is self-sustaining.  相似文献

Developmental, reproductive and size‐related variables were compared between two ecologically different strains of Periplaneta americana (L.). One strain was a laboratory‐reared culture, and the other a feral strain inhabiting an urban environment. The feral population was originally founded by escapees from the culture, but may also include immigrants from other urban populations. Both final‐instar nymphs and adults of the feral insects were heavier than their equivalents from the cultured population, this weight difference being due to a higher capacity for the storage of water and heavier fat‐free carcasses. Feral cockroaches also had heavier oothecae, which contained heavier offspring than those from cultured females. Feral animals had one or two more larval stadia and higher growth rates. Size‐related differences persisted in first and second filial generations reared under laboratory conditions on a nutritionally balanced diet, but were not apparent in first filial insects reared on a vegetable diet. Greater resistance to starvation was found in feral animals, and this was attributed primarily to their larger water stores. Feral animals were found to harbour a higher density of endosymbiotic bacteria in the fat body, which are known to enhance the efficiency of protein utilization. The data suggest that the characteristics of feral animals have been selected in the nutritionally harsh feral environment compared with the more benign culture conditions, with water availability playing a role.  相似文献

In a Japanese population of Locusta migratoria, adult females become reproductively inactive under crowding and long days (LD) and reproductively active under crowding and short days (SD). The identity and titre of ecdysteroids in the haemolymph and ovaries from adult females reared under SD and LD were investigated by RIA/HPLC. The effects of exogenous juvenile hormone (JH) III treatments on the termination of such reproductive arrest and ecdysteroid contents in LD females were also examined. In general, ecdysteroid titres in both haemolymph and ovaries were significantly higher in reproductively active SD females than in reproductively inactive LD females. A clear difference was also observed in oocyte growth between SD and LD individuals. JH III applications (three consecutive topical applications, 150 μg per insect per day from day 3) stimulated ovarian development in LD females and significantly increased the haemolymph and ovarian ecdysteroids to a level comparable to that of reproductively active SD adult females.  相似文献

To determine the level of inter-population variation in wing form and the induction of reproductive diapause as affected by photoperiod, females of five populations of arrhenotokous Thrips nigropilosus Uzel were reared under four different photoperiodic conditions at 18°C. The experimental populations originated from Nakijin-son, Motobu-cho, and Uruma-shi in Okinawa Island, Amami-shi in Amami-Oshima Island, and Wakayama-shi on Honshu Island. In all five populations, only macropterae were observed when the photoperiod was 13 h light/11 h dark. Brachypterae were observed as the light period was reduced to 11.5 or 12 h in the Wakayama population, and to 10 or 11.5 h in the Nakijin, Motobu, and Uruma populations. Brachypterous females were observed in the Amami population only when the light period was 10 h. With the same photoperiod, only brachypterae were observed in the Wakayama and Uruma populations. Short-day conditions also induced reproductive diapause in the Wakayama population but not in the Amami and Okinawa Island populations. Under 10 h light/14 h dark, almost all hybrids obtained from crossing Wakayama with Amami populations entered reproductive diapause. Some populations in Okinawa Island may have been originated in northern localities.  相似文献

In vitro synthetic activities of juvenile hormones (JH) were examined using a radiochemical assay in diapause females and reproductive females of the blow fly, Protophormia terraenovae. Thin layer chromatography showed that products of the corpus allatum (CA) comigrated with a synthetic sample of JH III bisepoxide but neither with JH III nor methylfarnesoate. JH synthetic activities increased in females reared under LD 18:6 at 25 degrees C, as the ovaries developed. The synthetic activities remained low in previtellogenic females reared under LD 12:12 at 20 degrees C. Removal of the pars intercerebralis completely prevented ovaries from development under reproductive conditions, and removal of the pars lateralis caused partial or full development of ovaries under diapause-inducing conditions. In these operated animals, the JH synthetic activities were not significantly different from those of the intact and sham-operated animals. The results indicate that the CA in P. terraenovae produces mainly JH III bisepoxide and a decrease in the JH production rate is a cause of diapause induction. PI neurons and PL neurons in the brain do not directly mediate changes in the JH production rate, but regulate ovarian development cooperatively with some unknown allatostatic and allatotropic factors.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen fertiliser on populations of the cereal aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum on winter wheat was investigated in a three year field experiment. Naturally occurring aphid populations were monitored on three nitrogen treatments; none, nitrogen application using Canopy Management guidelines (130–210 kg ha-1) and conventional practice (190 kg ha-1). Inoculations of laboratory reared S. avenae were used to enhance field populations on half the plots. Natural populations of M. dirhodum remained below the current UK spray threshold level of two-thirds of shoots infested at the start of flowering, or five aphids per shoot in all years, whilst populations of S. avenae exceeded the threshold in all years. The response of the two species to nitrogen differed. Significantly higher populations of M. dirhodum were recorded in both treatments which received nitrogen in all years, whilst the response of S. avenae varied between years. In 1994 and 1995 when environmental conditions favoured aphid development, higher populations were recorded in the two treatments which received nitrogen. In 1993 when high rainfall created unfavourable conditions, higher populations were recorded in the plots receiving no nitrogen. Differences in peak density and cumulative aphid index of S. avenae resulted from differences in the rate of population increase between ear emergence and peak density on the different treatments. Populations prior to ear emergence were higher in the plots which received nitrogen but the differences were not statistically significant. There was no evidence of a difference in the timing of population decline in the different treatments. In 1993 higher levels of infection by entomopathogenic fungi were observed in all treatments. Significantly higher levels of infection were recorded in the treatments receiving nitrogen, which may have accounted for the lower S. avenae populations recorded. It is possible that the larger canopies recorded in these treatments produced conditions which favoured infection by fungi, thereby limiting aphid population growth. The results indicate that application of nitrogen increases natural populations of M. dirhodum, and under favourable conditions, populations of S. avenae. However, in suboptimal climatic conditions, the application of nitrogen fertiliser can lead to lower populations of 5. avenae. The data also suggest that there is no consistent difference between a conventional and Canopy Managed approach to nitrogen fertiliser use in terms of the risk of infestation by cereal aphids.  相似文献

Spatiotemporal variation in reproductive rates is a common phenomenon in many wildlife populations, but the population dynamic consequences of spatial and temporal variability in different components of reproduction remain poorly understood. We used 43 years (1962–2004) of data from 17 locations and a capture–mark–recapture (CMR) modeling framework to investigate the spatiotemporal variation in reproductive parameters of yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris), and its influence on the realized population growth rate. Specifically, we estimated and modeled breeding probabilities of two-year-old females (earliest age of first reproduction), >2-year-old females that have not reproduced before (subadults), and >2-year-old females that have reproduced before (adults), as well as the litter sizes of two-year old and >2-year-old females. Most reproductive parameters exhibited spatial and/or temporal variation. However, reproductive parameters differed with respect to their relative influence on the realized population growth rate (λ). Litter size had a stronger influence than did breeding probabilities on both spatial and temporal variations in λ. Our analysis indicated that λ was proportionately more sensitive to survival than recruitment. However, the annual fluctuation in litter size, abetted by the breeding probabilities, accounted for most of the temporal variation in λ. A study on the reproductive status of Belonogaster juncea juncea individuals was conducted in Cameroon on 21 pre- and 15 post-emergence colonies. We compared the females’ size and ovarian development, and verified if they were inseminated or not. Dominant females were inseminated, had well developed ovaries, and were the largest individuals in pre-emergence colonies; in post-emergence colonies their size did not differ significantly from that of non-dominant females. Most subordinate females of both pre- and post-emergence colonies had thread-like ovaries, but a few had well developed ovaries. In pre-emergence colonies 13 subordinates had thread-like ovaries and several yellow bodies indicating that they had already laid eggs. We deduced that subordinates with well developed ovaries joined the foundations shortly before our study, while those with several yellow bodies had arrived some time before and their ovaries had regressed. At the end of the post-emergence phase appear non-dominant females with well developed ovaries. They are the future foundresses. Some females can disperse just after emergence and join a new foundation without mating. Nevertheless, most co-foundresses were inseminated when they joined the foundations, and so had the potential to reproduce, negating the hypothesis of swarm founding in B. j. juncea. While supportive breeding programmes strive to minimize negative genetic impacts to populations, case studies have found evidence for reduced fitness of artificially produced individuals when they reproduce in the wild. Pedigrees of two complete generations were tracked with molecular markers to investigate differences in reproductive success (RS) of wild and hatchery‐reared Chinook salmon spawning in the natural environment to address questions regarding the demographic and genetic impacts of supplementation to a natural population. Results show a demographic boost to the population from supplementation. On average, fish taken into the hatchery produced 4.7 times more adult offspring, and 1.3 times more adult grand‐offspring than naturally reproducing fish. Of the wild and hatchery fish that successfully reproduced, we found no significant differences in RS between any comparisons, but hatchery‐reared males typically had lower RS values than wild males. Mean relative reproductive success (RRS) for hatchery F1 females and males was 1.11 (= 0.84) and 0.89 (= 0.56), respectively. RRS of hatchery‐reared fish (H) that mated in the wild with either hatchery or wild‐origin (W) fish was generally equivalent to W × W matings. Mean RRS of H × W and H × H matings was 1.07 (= 0.92) and 0.94 (= 0.95), respectively. We conclude that fish chosen for hatchery rearing did not have a detectable negative impact on the fitness of wild fish by mating with them for a single generation. Results suggest that supplementation following similar management practices (e.g. 100% local, wild‐origin brood stock) can successfully boost population size with minimal impacts on the fitness of salmon in the wild.  相似文献

Physiological and endocrine factors associated with reproductive senescence were assessed in a group of 19 ageing red deer hinds. Reproductive success, defined as the percentage of hinds weaning a calf successfully, decreased gradually from 89% at 6-7 years of age to 50% at 17 years, and subsequently decreased markedly; only one hind reared a calf at 19-20 years of age. When the 12 surviving hinds were approaching 21 years of age, they were compared with ten mature 7-year-old females over the onset of the breeding season. All hinds were subsequently killed, the reproductive tracts were recovered and antral (>/= 2 mm in diameter) and preantral follicle populations were determined by dissection (n = 7 hinds per age group) or stereological analysis (n = 2 ovaries per age group), respectively. Cyclical ovarian activity (plasma progesterone) was evident in fewer aged hinds compared with mature hinds (3/12 versus 10/10, P < 0.001) and mean plasma LH concentrations were higher in aged animals than in mature animals (0.57 +/- 0.05 and 0.20 +/- 0.05 ng ml(-1), P < 0.001). Mean uterine (44.2 +/- 4.5 and 75.4 +/- 4.2 g; P < 0.001) and ovarian masses (0.88 +/- 0.11 and 1.52 +/- 0.12 g; P < 0.001) were lower in the aged hinds, which also had fewer antral follicles than did mature hinds (0.89 +/- 0.35 and 23.5 +/- 4.5 follicles per hind, respectively; P < 0.001). Only one primordial follicle was observed in one of the ovaries of the aged hinds, compared with 7000-21 000 in the ovaries of mature hinds. The high gonadotrophin concentrations, paucity of primordial and antral follicles and failure of ovulation indicate collectively that waning reproductive performance after 17 years of age is primarily due to ovarian failure.  相似文献

Male prairie deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) were treated from weaning until 8 weeks of age with chemical stimuli from conspecifics or with control substances. Growth of the testes and seminal vesicles was retarded in males that were reared in contact with soiled bedding material transferred from cages of adult males. No additional inhibition resulted from the physical presence of an adult male either continuously or for 1 hr per day. Application of urine collected from adult males to the noses of young males retarded seminal vesicle growth. Removal of the olfactory bulbs of males at 3 weeks of age blocked the inhibitory influence of urine on sexual maturation. Exposure to urine from adult females did not alter the growth of the reproductive organs in young males. The ability of a male deer mouse to retard the sexual maturation of young male conspecifics (Bediz, G. M., and Whitsett, J. M., 1979, J. Comp. Physiol. Psychol.93, 493–500) appears to be a consequence of chemical stimuli excreted in its urine.  相似文献

Development of the parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) at low temperatures was determined to identify rearing conditions that might result in adults that were in reproductive diapause. Diapausing adults would be expected to survive cold storage longer than nondiapausing adults for use in biological control programs. Only a few eggs were found in the ovaries when H. hebetor females were reared during the immature stages at 17.5 and 20°C with a 16-h photoperiod, and the ovaries were poorly developed and contained no eggs when females were reared with a 10-h photoperiod in these low temperatures. Rearing H. hebetor at 17.5 and 20°C did not result in diapause of immature stages, but did appear to result in possible adult reproductive diapause when the immature stages were reared with a 10-h photoperiod. Females reared during the immature stages at 17.5°C with a10-h photoperiod lived longer and took longer to lay their first eggs and to lay 50% of their eggs than those females reared at 17.5°C with a16-h photoperiod. Females reared during the immature stages at 20°C with a10-h photoperiod took longer to lay their first eggs and to lay 50% of their eggs, and they had a lower respiration rate, than those females reared at 20°C with a16-h photoperiod. Females that were reared in conditions that appeared to induce reproductive diapause resumed oviposition and their respiration rate increased soon after being transferred to a higher temperature (27.5°C). Thus, females reared at a 10-h photoperiod at 17.5 and 20°C appear to enter reproductive diapause.  相似文献
