For herbivorous insects, studies of isolation by distance (IBD) are available for large spatial scales, whereas studies over small geographic distances are relatively rare, in particular for species where population turnover is high. In this study, we investigated IBD and population genetic structure in the aphid Macrosiphoniella tanacetaria, a specialist herbivore of tansy (Tanacetum vulgare). Owing to clonal growth, an individual plant (genet) has one to many shoots (ramets), which can host aphid colonies. Both at the level of ramets and genets, aphid persistence is short, in the order of weeks. Sampling of 17 populations was performed on a logarithmic scale, along the Saale River in Germany in June 2001, with distances between populations ranging from 1 m to 170 km. For the six microsatellites used, allelic and genotypic variability within aphid populations was high, and deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and linkage disequilibrium were frequent. Most pairs of populations were significantly differentiated but there was no pattern of IBD. However, including into the analysis four additional populations from Alsace, France, collected at distances of, on average 470 km, resulted in a weak but significant IBD. Aphids are passive dispersers that are known to occasionally disperse over large distances, even though most dispersal is likely to occur over a small spatial scale. We suggest that for the host-specific M. tanacetaria, patterns of genetic variation among populations are, at an ecologically meaningful scale, governed by colonization/extinction dynamics and genetic drift rather than by a drift-dispersal equilibrium.  相似文献

Metapopulation dynamics in an aphid-parasitoid system   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Metapopulation theory makes a number of predictions concerning the effects of dispersal on the persistence of predator-prey or host-parasitoid systems. While the stabilising effects of dispersal have been shown in a number of laboratory studies, evidence from field studies remains scarce due to a lack of suitable model systems. I describe a host-parasitoid system that shows a classical metapopulation structure with frequent extinctions and colonisations consisting of the aphidiid Lysiphlebus hirticornisand the aphid Metopeurum fuscoviride. Both the parasitoid and the aphid are specialists on their respective hosts. I followed the dynamics of host and parasitoid on individually marked tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) plants, the host of M. fuscoviride. Dynamics of host and parasitoid populations were characterized by frequent extinctions and colonisations. Mean longevity of aphid colonies was only 3.1 weeks. Parasitism by L. hirticorniswas a main cause of extinction for the aphid as rates of parasitism often reached 100%, in particular towards the end of the field season. Patchiness in this system occurs at two spatial scales. Aphid colonies form on single tansy ramets = shoots but movements of aphid individuals among ramets within a particular tansy genet are frequent. Because aphids can persist on a genet for a large numer of generations, it is argued that local populations form on genets rather than ramets. The number of host and parasitoid extinctions described in this study exceeds the number of extinctions usually observed in field studies of host-parasitoid metapopulations. It is suggested that aphid-parasitoid systems such as the one studied in this paper may be good models to test the predictions of metapopulation theory.  相似文献

Paris quadrifolia (herb Paris) is a long-lived, clonal woodland herb that shows strong differences in local population size and shoot density along an environmental gradient of soil and light conditions. This environmentally based structuring may be mediated by differences in clonal growth and seedling recruitment through sexual reproduction. To study the interrelationship between environmental conditions and spatial patterns of clonal growth, the spatial genetic structure of four P. quadrifolia populations growing in strongly contrasting sites was determined. In the first place, plant excavations were performed in order to (i) determine differences in below-ground growth of genets, (ii) investigate connectedness of ramets and (iii) determine total genet size. Although no differences in internode length were found among sites, clones in moist sites were much smaller (genets usually consisted of 1-3 interconnected shoots, most of them flowering) than genets in dry sites, which consisted of up to 15 interconnected shoots, the majority of which were vegetative. Further, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were used. Clonal diversity was higher in populations located in moist and productive ash-poplar forests compared to those found in drier and less productive mixed forest sites (G/N: 0.27 and 0.14 and Simpson's D: 0.84 and 0.75, respectively). Patterns of spatial population genetic structure under dry conditions revealed several large clones dominating the entire population, whereas in moist sites many small genets were observed. Nevertheless, strong spatial genetic structure of the genet population was observed. Our results clearly demonstrate that patterns of clonal diversity and growth form of P. quadrifolia differ among environments. Limited seedling recruitment and large clone sizes due to higher connectedness of ramets explain the low clonal diversity in dry sites. In moist sites, higher levels of clonal diversity and small clone sizes indicate repeated seedling recruitment, whereas strong spatial genetic structure suggests limited seed dispersal within populations.  相似文献

Environmental factors can lead individuals down different developmental pathways giving rise to distinct phenotypes (phenotypic plasticity). The production of winged or unwinged morphs in aphids is an example of two alternative developmental pathways. Dispersal is paramount in aphids that often have a metapopulation structure, where local subpopulations frequently go extinct, such as the specialized aphids on tansy (Tanacetum vulgare). We conducted various experiments to further understand the cues involved in the production of winged dispersal morphs by the two dominant species of the tansy aphid metacommunity, Metopeurum fuscoviride and Macrosiphoniella tanacetaria. We found that the ant-tended M. fuscoviride produced winged individuals predominantly at the beginning of the season while the untended M. tanacetaria produced winged individuals throughout the season. Winged mothers of both species produced winged offspring, although in both species winged offspring were mainly produced by unwinged females. Crowding and the presence of predators, effects already known to influence wing production in other aphid species, increased the percentage of winged offspring in M. tanacetaria, but not in M. fuscoviride. We find there are also other factors (i.e. temporal effects) inducing the production of winged offspring for natural aphid populations. Our results show that the responses of each aphid species are due to multiple wing induction cues.  相似文献

1 Integrated management of crop pests requires the identification of the appropriate spatial scale at which colonization processes occurs. We assessed, by coupling demographic and genetic methods, the relative contribution of local and transient migrants of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae to wheat field colonization in spring. 2 We examined, during two consecutive years, the daily colonization of wheat by aphid migrants and compared this with daily aphid flight monitored by a local 12.2‐m suction trap. The genetic profiles of aphids landing on crops were compared with those of both flying aphids caught by the suction trap and local populations from arable crops and hedgerows. 3 In the first year, we observed: (i) a strong correlation between aphids colonizing the crop and those moving within the crop and a close genetic similarity between aphids from these samples and (ii) a high level of genetic differentiation between these aphids and populations from local cereals and field margins. In the second year, the number of migrants recorded on the wheat was three‐fold higher than in the previous year, and less correlated with that recorded by the suction trap. This was associated with a lack of genetic differentiation between all samples. 4 This variation in the colonization processes resulted mainly in an abrupt increase in abundance of genotypes from local over‐wintering sites in 2004. This suggests that, despite the long range dispersal potential of the grain aphid, outbreak risks could be mainly determined at a local scale, encouraging the design of relatively small management units.  相似文献

Integrated pest management programs tend to reduce the chemical input by enhancing the development of biological control. Cereal aphids cause important damages to winter wheat in Europe but are currently under the pressure of several parasitoid species (Braconidae: Aphidiinae). Previous ecological studies have reported the existence of an asynchrony between aphid and parasitoid populations in early spring in cereal cultures. Here, we tested the presence of rose bushes (Rosa rugosa) as a host plant for alternative aphid-host. Aphid and parasitoid densities were recorded for two years using the plant cutting sampling method. The main results were: (i) rose bushes constitute a potential reservoir of alternative aphid hosts species for a number of parasitoid and predator species, (ii) rose aphids appear earlier in spring and were more abundant than the aphids on wheat, (iii) parasitism activity in rose bushes is synchronized with cereal fields, however (iv) rose bushes management did not induce a decrease of cereal aphid population.  相似文献

In insect species characterized by inbreeding, limited dispersal, and a metapopulation structure, high genetic differentiation and reduced genetic diversity within local populations are expected. Using the model system Lysiphlebus hirticornis Mackauer, a specialist parasitoid of the tansy aphid, Metopeurum fuscoviride Stroyan (Hemiptera: Aphididae), we examined within‐site temporal population dynamics and genetics, including molecular variation at the tansy plant level. Aphid‐parasitoid dynamics were surveyed and parasitoids sampled from 72 tansy plants at 11 sites in and around Jena, Germany, over one growing season. Thereafter, parasitoid samples were genotyped at 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci. Colonization, extinction, and recolonization events occurred during the season. Allele numbers and identities were highly variable over time. When samples from all sites were pooled, allele number over all loci showed a decreasing trend with time. At the level of sites, temporal changes in genetic diversity were more variable. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that samples at the plant level explained the highest variance compared to at site level. We conclude that the genetic structuring of this insect is very fine grained (i.e. at the tansy plant level) and the temporal genetic diversity is explained by a combination of extinction and recolonization events, as well as inbreeding. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 737–749.  相似文献

Abstract: In many clonal plant species seedling recruitment is restricted to short colonization episodes early in the development of the population, and clonal diversity (i.e., genet diversity) in the population is expected to decrease with increasing population age. In established populations of the pseudo-annual Circaea lutetiana seedling recruitment has previously not been observed. Therefore, we expected established populations to have low clonal diversities. We analysed number and frequency of genets and spatial distribution of genets in six differently-aged C. lutetiana populations with the use of four informative RAPD primers. We found relatively low clonal diversities in young populations but very high clonal diversities in established populations. Therefore, the hypothesis was rejected that seedling recruitment does not occur in established populations. Moreover, we did not find large genet size asymmetries in established populations. Genet size differences can be caused by stochastic processes or by fitness related traits, such as differences in vegetative reproduction. Because vegetative propagation of ramets is dependent on ramet size, and the number of ramets and the size of each ramet determine genet size, we expected that large genets produced, on average, large ramets. However, this was not the case, suggesting that stochastic processes caused genet size differences. Genet size may also be bounded if spatial distribution of genets is affected by micro-habitat differences. For this we expected to find a clumped spatial distribution of ramets of the same genet. However, ramets of large genets were always found intermingled with ramets belonging to other genets.  相似文献

Abstract We expected that in clonal plants with the phalanx growth form, prereproductive ramets function as a meristem bank that helps buffer ramet demography against environmental fluctuations. Specifically, we evaluated four expectations for the forest understorey clonal palm Geonoma brevispatha in a swamp forest in south‐eastern Brazil. Our expectations were are follows: (i) the vital rates of prereproductive ramets are more responsive to genet‐related characteristics (genet size, distance and size of the nearest genet neighbour, and reproductive ramet survivorship) than to environmental variables (canopy openness, basal area of small trees, flooding, and distance and size of the nearest large tree neighbour), whose effects are expected to affect ramet dynamics indirectly through physiological integration; (ii) the progress of prereproductive ramets to later stages is dependent on the death of reproductive ramets; (iii) the population dynamics of G. brevispatha is resistant to significant interannual changes in the vital rates of ramets, (i.e. the occurrence of good and bad years); and (iv) there are large negative covariances among demographic transitions within a given year, as well as between years, reflecting the flexibility of G. brevispatha to adjust to environmental variability. Expectations 1, 2 and 4 were confirmed, while expectation 3 was only partially confirmed. Matrix models predicted that the growth rate of the overall ramet population was significantly greater than unity in the first study year, but it was significantly smaller than 1.0 in the second study year. Ramet population growth rates at the level of individual genets were greater than unity in the majority of genets in the first year, but in the second year genets with growth rates smaller than unity prevailed. Ramet population dynamics seems to be resistant to the succession of good and bad years; in effect, the presence of a meristem bank of ramets helps stabilize λ.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Many plants reproduce both clonally and sexually, and the balance between the two modes of reproduction will vary among populations. Clonal reproduction was characterized in three populations of the wild strawberry, Fragaria virginiana, to determine the extent that reproductive mode varied locally between sites. The study sites were fragmented woodlands in Cook County, Illinois, USA.

Methods

A total of 95 strawberry ramets were sampled from the three sites via transects. Ramets were mapped and genotyped at five variable microsatellite loci. The variability at these five loci was sufficient to assign plants to clones with high confidence, and the spatial pattern of genets was mapped at each site.

Key Results

A total of 27 distinct multilocus genotypes were identified. Of these, 18 genotypes were detected only once, with the remaining nine detected in multiple ramets. The largest clone was identified in 16 ramets. No genets were shared between sites, and each site exhibited markedly different clonal and sexual recruitment patterns, ranging from two non-overlapping and widespread genets to 19 distinct genets. Only one flowering genet was female; the remainder were hermaphrodites.

Conclusions

Local population history or fine-scale ecological differences can result in dramatically different reproductive patterns at small spatial scales. This finding may be fairly widespread among clonal plant species, and studies that aim to characterize reproductive modes in species capable of asexual reproduction need to evaluate reproductive modes in multiple populations and sites.Key words: Clonal structure, gynodioecy, Fragaria virginiana, microsatellites, population genetic structure  相似文献

To establish a baseline for conservation of a threatened clonal tree, Magnolia tomentosa, we investigated size distribution and genetic structure within a population, using six microsatellite markers. Within the study site, 1044 living ramets (stems) were distinguished into 175 genets (individuals). The mean number of ramets per genet was 5.97, and 76% of all genets had multiple ramets. Genets, which apparently produced new ramets through sprouting and layering, were generally composed of several large ramets and many small ramets. Spatial autocorrelation analysis of microsatellite alleles revealed positive autocorrelation over short distances for both ramets and genets. The Moran's I-value of ramets in the shortest distance class was 3.8 times larger than that of genets, reflecting the effect of clonal growth. To analyse the size-class differences in genetic structure, the 175 genets were separated into two size classes, small and large. The correlogram for the small genets exhibited positive spatial autocorrelation in the shortest distance class, but this was not the case for the correlogram for the large genets, indicating that genetic structure is weakened or lost through self-thinning as the genets grow. The FIS value over all loci for the small genets was positive and deviated significantly from zero, while the corresponding value for the large genets was close to zero. The excess homozygotes in the small genets may be the result of genetic substructuring and/or inbreeding, and the reduction in homozygote frequency from the small to large genets may be because of loss of genetic structure and/or inbreeding depression.  相似文献

Plants of the genus Pistacia (Anacardiaceae) serve as obligate hosts for a group of specialized gall-forming aphids (Homoptera: Fordinae). The aphids regularly migrate between the Pistacia (primary) host plants and the roots of non-specific grasses and cereals (secondary hosts). Gall density varies considerably between trees and sites. The intimate relationships between the aphids and their primary host, the natural variation of host susceptibility, and the heterogeneous geographical environment may promote local adaptation and deme formation in the aphid populations. Indeed, previous analyses of the genetic structure of the aphid Baizongia pistaciae, which forms large galls on the deciduous P. palaestina trees, suggested deme formation (Martinez et al. 2005). In this study, we analyzed the genetic structure of the B. pistaciae population at eight sites and 78 trees throughout Israel and a single population in Turkey, using two molecular markers (AFLP fingerprints and COI sequencing). The genetic distance between the Israeli populations was found to be low (D = 0.01–0.02), and there was no genetic differentiation found between any population pairs. In five of the Israeli populations, we also compared the genetic identity between aphids forming galls on the same tree and between galls on neighboring trees. The analysis indicated that the genetic identity of different galls within a tree resembles the correspondence between trees within a population. Our results showed no indication of deme formation or any hierarchical genetic substructuring within B. pistaciae populations in Israel. The extensive gene flow between aphid colonies may be explained by their dispersal abilities and the potential bridging role of the secondary hosts.  相似文献

Clonal growth is generally expected to have significant effects on the spatial genetic structure within populations. In this study, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to reveal clonal and spatial genetic structure of four natural populations of Luohanguo (Siraitia grosvenorii), an economic vine species endemic to South China. A total of 351 ramets were assigned to 76 distinct multi-locus genotypes (i.e. genets), with the G/N varying from 0.121 to 0.350. No widespread genet was found across different populations. The clonal diversity (D) and evenness (E) ranged from 0.333 to 0.828 and from 0 to 0.741, respectively. While most genets consisted of fewer than five ramets, we observed some dominant genets that had much more (up to 69) ramets and spread over large areas. Spatial autocorrelation analyses revealed a spatial genetic structure (i.e. significant positive autocorrelation within 20 m and negative autocorrelation beyond 40 m) in one population, but not in other three populations with smaller population size. This study highlights the importance of clonal growth in shaping the spatial genetic structure in Luohanguo, which may have complex effects on the dynamics and evolution of its declining populations.  相似文献

In future elevated CO2 environments, chewing insects are likely to perform less well than at present because of the effects of increased carbon fixation on their host plants. When the aphid, Aulacorthum solani was reared on bean ( Vicia faba ) and tansy ( Tanacetum vulgare ) plants under ambient and elevated CO2, performance was enhanced on both hosts at elevated CO2. The nature of the response was different on each plant species suggesting that feeding strategy may influence an insect's response to elevated CO2. On bean, the daily rate of production of nymphs was increased by 16% but there was no difference in development time, whereas on tansy, development time was 10% shorter at elevated CO2 but the rate of production of nymphs was not affected. The same aphid clone therefore responded differently to elevated CO2 on different host plants. This increase in aphid performance could lead to larger populations of aphids in a future elevated CO2 environment.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In plant populations the magnitude of spatial genetic structure of apparent individuals (including clonal ramets) can be different from that of sexual individuals (genets). Thus, distinguishing the effects of clonal versus sexual individuals in population genetic analyses could provide important insights for evolutionary biology and conservation. To investigate the effects of clonal spread on the fine-scale spatial genetic structure within plant populations, Hosta jonesii (Liliaceae), an endemic species to Korea, was chosen as a study species. METHODS: Using allozymes as genetic markers, spatial autocorrelation analysis of ramets and of genets was conducted to quantify the spatial scale of clonal spread and genotype distribution in two populations of H. jonesii. KEY RESULTS: Join-count statistics revealed that most clones are significantly aggregated at < 3-m interplant distance. Spatial autocorrelation analysis of all individuals resulted in significantly higher Moran's I values at 0-3-m interplant distance than analyses of population samples in which clones were excluded. However, significant fine-scale genetic structure was still observed when clones were excluded. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that clones enhance the magnitude of spatial autocorrelation due to localized clonal spread. The significant fine-scale genetic structure detected in samples excluding clones is consistent with the biological and ecological traits exhibited by H. jonesii including bee pollination and limited seed dispersal. For conservation purposes, genetic diversity would be maximized in local populations of H. jonesii by collecting or preserving individuals that are spaced at least 5 m apart.  相似文献

We investigated the response of four species of aphids ( Metopeurum fuscoviride , Brachycaudus cardui , Aphis fabae , and Macrosiphoniella tanacetaria ) on tansy ( Tanacetum vulgare ) to plant quality and attendance by an ant, Lasius niger . The aphids experienced one of four different environments for two consecutive generations. Ant-attendance significantly affected the time needed to reach maximum fecundity only in Me. fuscoviride and plant quality in Me. fuscoviride and B. cardui . Maximum daily fecundity was positively affected by plant quality and the magnitude of the effect was inversely associated with the degree of myrmecophily. Ant-attendance had a positive effect on maximum fecundity only in the obligate myrmecophile, Me. fuscoviride . The intrinsic rate of population increase, r m, on high quality plants, was lowest for the obligate myrmecophile, intermediate for the facultative myrmecophiles and highest for the unattended species. On high quality plants the fitness of Me. fuscoviride was more adversely affected by the developmental stage of the plant and absence of ants than that of A. fabae or Ma. tanacetaria , which were able to maintain a high relative fitness in all the environments. The implications for aphids experiencing different degrees of ant-attendance and seasonal changes in plant quality are discussed.  相似文献

1 The RAPD method (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) was used to investigate genetic diversity of the green spruce aphid, Elatobium abietinum Walker, a pest introduced recently to Iceland. 2 This aphid in Iceland comprised two polymorphic populations, one in the east and the other in the west of the country. The genetic variation between sites within a population was continuous and appeared to be in good agreement with geographical distances. 3 In the eastern population the variation was greater between sites than within sites, whereas in the western population the pattern of variation appeared to be the opposite. This overall greater genetic variation in the eastern population could be due to its having been colonized earlier than the western one. 4 The study also demonstrated a close relationship between the green spruce aphid in Iceland and aphids from Denmark, which agrees with their assumed origin. The differences in introduction time, adaptation and competitiveness between the two Icelandic populations are discussed.  相似文献

1 Temporary habitats are characterized by the appearance and disappearance of patches in which resources are available for a limited period only. Organisms living in those environments usually exhibit adaptive traits, such as a high ability to find and exploit new patches. Among them are phytophagous insects, such as crop pests living in agroecosystems. Understanding how phytophagous insects invade a new patch is of great agricultural importance. 2 Here, we investigated how aphids colonize a wheat field by studying the spatial and temporal dynamics of their populations at large (field) and fine (group of host plants) scales. 3 The sampling design consisted of counting and locating aphid colonies within 30 0.25 m2 squares randomly spaced in a 1.5‐ha winter wheat field over 2 months. All colonies were precisely located within the squares and their composition in terms of morphs was determined. 4 We show that: (i) immigration of winged aphids was a major factor driving the aphid population dynamics during a large part of the season and (ii) within the field, populations established late in the growing season. Aggregated, populations of aphids became progressively homogeneously distributed at the field scale. At the scale of a 0.25 m2 square, infested plants were clustered in randomly distributed small patches, and aphid colonies experienced high extinction rates, suggesting failure in population establishment. 5 Because immigration may considerably influence both population dynamics and spatial distribution, our study suggests that future predictive models should give a greater weight to spring immigrants.  相似文献
