The evolution of F1 postzygotic incompatibilities in birds   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Abstract.— We analyzed the rate at which postzygotic incompatibilities accumulate in birds. Our purposes were to assess the role of intrinsic F1 hybrid infertility and inviability in the speciation process, and to compare rates of loss of fertility and viability between the sexes. Among our sample more than half the crosses between species in the same genus produce fertile hybrids. Complete loss of F1 hybrid fertility takes on the order of millions of years. Loss of F1 hybrid viability occurs over longer timescales than fertility: some viable hybrids have been produced between taxa that appear to have been separated for more than 55 my. There is strong support for Haldane's rule, with very few examples where the male has lower fitness than the female. However, in contrast to Drosophila , fertility of the homogametic sex in the F1 appears to be lost before viability of the heterogametic sex in the F1. We conclude that the time span of loss of intrinsic hybrid fertility and viability is often, but not always, longer than the time to speciation. Premating isolation is an important mechanism maintaining reproductive isolation in birds. In addition, other factors causing postzygotic reproductive isolation such as ecological causes of hybrid unfitness, reduced mating success of hybrids, and genetic incompatibilities in the F2s and backcrosses may often be involved in the speciation process.  相似文献

We assessed the fertility (reproductive success, litter size, testis weight, spermatocyte-to-spermatid ratio) of F1s and backcrosses between different wild-derived outbred and inbred strains of two mouse subspecies, Mus musculus domesticus and M. m. musculus . A significant proportion of the F1 females between the outbred crosses did not reproduce, suggesting that female infertility was present. As the spermatocyte-to-spermatid ratio was correlated with testis weight, the latter was used to attribute a sterile vs. fertile phenotype to all males. Segregation proportions in the backcrosses of F1 females yielded 11 (inbred) to 17% (outbred) sterile males, suggesting the contribution of two to three major genetic factors to hybrid male sterility. Only one direction of cross between the inbred strains produced sterile F1 males, indicating that one factor was borne by the musculus X-chromosome. No such differences were observed between reciprocal crosses in the outbred strains. The involvement of the X chromosome in male sterility thus could not be assessed, but its contribution appears likely given the limited introgression of X-linked markers through the hybrid zone between the subspecies. However, we observed no sterile phenotypes in wild males from the hybrid zone, although testis weight tended to decrease in the centre of the transect.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 379–393.  相似文献

Rhododendron (Ericaceae) is a large woody genus in which hybridization may play an important role in evolution and speciation, particularly in the Sino-Himalayan region, where many interfertile species often occur sympatrically. Natural hybridization between Rhododendron delavayi Franch. (=  R. arboreum ssp. delavayi ) and Rhododendron decorum Franch., which belong to different subsections of subgenus Hymenanthes, was investigated. Material of R. delavayi and R. decorum and their putative hybrids was collected from the wild. On the basis of morphology, chloroplast DNA, nuclear ribosomal DNA, and AFLP profiles, hybrids and parental species were identified. Hybridization occurred in both directions, but was asymmetrical, with R. delavayi as the major maternal parent in the hybrid zone. Most of the hybrids possessed intermediate phenotypes, and amongst the 15 hybrids detected were six F1s, two F2s, one first-generation backcross to R. delavayi , and two first-generation backcrosses to R. decorum . This indicates that, if Rhododendron underwent rapid radiation in this region, it did so in spite of permeable species barriers.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 119–129.  相似文献

Rhododendron (Ericaceae) is a large genus in which barriers to hybridization are especially weak, but many species are maintained in sympatry. Hybridization among four species of Rhododendron subsect. Pontica, which occur in sympatry in Turkey, was investigated. Material of R. ponticum, R. smirnovii, R. ungernii, and R. caucasicum and their putative hybrids was collected from the wild. Based on morphology, chloroplast DNA and nuclear ribosomal DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) profiles, each accession was identified as a species or hybrid combination. Five of the six possible hybrid combinations among the four species were detected. Rhododendron ponticum × R. smirnovii was represented by a single individual and R. caucasicum × R. smirnovii by one small group of hybrid plants. The combinations R. ponticum × R. ungernii and R. ungernii × R. smirnovii showed evidence of frequent backcrossing, while R. ponticum × R. caucasicum appeared unusual in that an intermediate hybrid type was abundant, whereas hybrids with phenotypes approaching either parent were rare. Possible explanations of this latter situation are discussed. The results suggest that natural hybridization among Rhododendron species is common and that ecological factors are important in maintaining integrity when species occur in sympatry.

Convict cichlids, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum , inbred for four and five generations exhibited moderate and severe morphological deformities. Deformed fishes were characterized by a more vertically sloping forehead, irregular jaw, hyoid, opercula and fin structure, reduced growth and irregular swimming behaviour. Inbred fish (F4, F5) did not differ from F1s in their age of maturation or the average size of their first broods. Brood survival was 18.7% in F5 inbred fish, compared to 75.5% in F1s.  相似文献

Abstract. The chloroplasts of two species of the Crassulaceae and their F1 hybrid were compared by electron microscopy. The two species had contrasting leaf tissue δ13C values of −25°/ ( Sedum greggii ) and −13°/ ( Cremnophila linguifolia ), and the F1 hybrid had a value of − 18°/. S. greggii had a mean of 8.9 thylakoids per granum in contrast to C. linguifolia which had a mean of only 3.8 thylakoids per granum. The F1 hybrid had a mean of 6.4 thylakoids per granum. Crystaloids were observed in S. greggii and the hybrid but not in C. linguifolia  相似文献

Three species of Darwin's Finches hybridize on the Galapagos island of Daphne Major. We examined mating patterns to determine if hybrids exhibit mate preferences. Geospiza fortis x G. scandens F1 hybrids backcrossed to both of the parental species, whereas all backcrosses bred with the parental species to which they were most related, or with hybrids. Paternal song was shown to be the crucial factor determining the mating pattern of G. fortis x G. scandens F1 hybrids and their offspring. Song is culturally inherited, transmitted faithfully from father to son (with few exceptions) as a result of an imprinting-like process. Size also contributes to the choice of mates. G. fortis x G. scandens F1 hybrid females paired with large G. scandens -like G. fortis males. G. fortis x G. fuliginosa F1 hybrids paired negatively assortatively with respect to the size of their G. fortis mates. Non-random mating of hybrids based on song, a non-generic trait, has interesting evolutionary consequences. Song characteristics and nuclear and mitochondrial genes flow from G. fuliginosa into the G. fortis population, whereas the direction of transfer of genetic and song information between G. fortis and G. scandens depends on which song was sung by the father of the hybrids.  相似文献

Electrophoretic analysis was performed on eight protein systems (lactate dehydrogenase, liver esterases, superoxide dismutase, haemoglobin, isocitrate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogIuconate dehydrogenase, transferrin) in Ctenopharyngodon idella, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis , and their F1 triploid hybrid. The data demonstrated codominant Mendelian inheritance at individual loci for each protein system. Transferrin and superoxide dismutase were the only proteins found to be polymorphic in either parental species. Both parental alleles were present and functional at each enzyme locus examined in the F1 triploid hybrid.  相似文献

Isolating barriers between interbreeding sympatric or parapatric interfertile species are maintained by processes that occur within their hybrid zones. Although the effects of intrinsic selection on hybrid fitness are well known, less is understood about extrinsic fitness variation. At Tiryal Dag, northeast Turkey, Rhododendron x sochadzeae (R. ponticum x caucasicum) forms large populations in which neither segregation nor backcrossing occur, in habitats intermediate between those of its parents. Using single-copy species-specific random amplified polymorphic DNA and inter simple sequence repeat markers, it was determined that most or all R. x sochadzeae plants are F1s, and that there are many separate genets present. Hand pollination and germination experiments showed that R. x sochadzeae plants can produce viable seed of F2s or backcrosses in either direction. Furthermore, adult backcrosses have been observed in habitats atypical for R. x sochadzeae. From this, all non-F1 hybrid derivatives appear to be eliminated in the hybrid zone at Tiryal Dag as a result of postgermination selection. This absence of post-F1 hybrid derivatives apparently prevents introgression. This type of hybrid population is here termed an F1-dominated hybrid zone (F1DZ), and also occurs in Encelia. The observed dominance of F1s within a narrow habitat range is best explained by habitat-mediated superiority of F1s over all other genotype classes. Therefore, habitat-mediated selection against the second hybrid generation might be preventing interspecific gene flow in R. x sochadzeae. F1DZ formation is postulated to require the formation of F1s in quantity, habitat-mediated superiority in F1s, and highly specific habitat conditions.  相似文献

Twenty‐one allozyme loci in samples of wild‐caught and hatchery‐reared Indian major carps from Bangladesh were analysed. Bayesian model‐based clustering analysis revealed the presence of four taxa, corresponding to the three known species along with a fourth unknown taxon present in two hatchery samples. Individual admixture coefficients showed that 24% of all hatchery‐reared fishes were hybrids, whereas a single hybrid was observed in the wild‐caught samples. Only catla Catla catla × rohu Labeo rohita and mrigal Cirrhinus cirrhosus × rohu hybrids were observed, the vast majority of which were F1 hybrids, though five individuals represented putative backcrosses. Mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed that catla × rohu hybridization primarily involved catla males and rohu females, whereas mrigal × rohu hybrids primarily resulted from rohu males and mrigal females. Despite the high percentage of F1‐hybrids in hatchery samples, reproductive barriers among species have so far precluded widespread introgression. Continued hybridization may eventually lead to a breakdown of species barriers, thereby compromising the genetic integrity of the species in the wild, and leading to production losses in aquaculture.  相似文献

Adult roach, bream and their presumed F1 hybrid from an Anglian Water reservoir were identified on the basis of morphological and meristic characteristics. The hybrid was clearly intermediate. Four hybrid breeding crosses were induced to spawn by hypophysis. A bream × roach cross (female named first) failed to produce fertile eggs, whereas F1 hybrid × roach, roach × F1 hybrid and F1 hybrid × F1 hybrid all produced fry. Fertility (defined as survival of eggs to hatching) was high for the F1 hybrid × roach back-cross (56%) but low for the others (<2%), in comparison to the pure species controls (roach 69%, bream 76%). Progeny from these crosses were reared until anal fin rays could be counted. These counts indicated intermediacy between the parents and back-crossed individuals, and similarity between F1 hybrids and their F2 progeny.  相似文献

The divergence in reproductive features and hybrid fertility patterns between two chromosomal races (2 n  = 40, 40St, and 2 n  = 22, 22Rb) of the house mouse in Tunisia were re-assessed on a larger sample of wild and laboratory-bred individuals than studied hitherto. Results showed that litter sizes were significantly smaller in 40St than in 22Rb mice, contrary to previous analyses. This suggests that variation in litter size between the two chromosomal races is more likely related to selective and/or environmental factors acting locally than to interracial reproductive trait divergence. However, the significantly reduced litter size of F1 hybrids compared with parental individuals was confirmed, and further highlighted a sex difference in hybrid infertility, as F1 females produced fewer litters and of smaller size than males. Histological analyses of F1 and backcrosses showed a breakdown of spermatogenesis in males and a significantly reduced primordial follicle pool in females. The degree of gametogenic dysfunction was not related to the level of chromosomal heterozygosity per se , but a significant effect of two Rb fusions on follicle number was observed in hybrid females. These results suggest that genetic incompatibilities contribute to primary gametogenic dysfunction in hybrids between the chromosomal races in Tunisia.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 407–416.  相似文献

We investigated the hybrid origin of × Crepidiastrixeris denticulato-platyphylla using RAPDs and ITS sequence data. The putative parents Paraixeris denticulata and Crepidiastrum platyphyllum represent separate species, irrespective of geographical origin. The occurrence of species specific RAPD markers from P. denticulata and C. platyphyllum in × C. denticulato-platyphylla established unambiguously a hybrid origin between the two taxa. This was in line with the occurrence of a combination of morphological characters such as plant habit and floret numbers. The parent taxa differed from each other by 7 nucleotide substitutions and 2 indel events in the ITS region. The hybrids showed sequence additivity and most likely represent F1 plants, with the exception of two plants which were of possible F2 origin, possessing either the ITS sequences of one parent only, or one predominant ITS type. The hybrids occurred in two out of three localities where the parents occurred sympatrically. This fact, together with the short life-span of the plants, suggests that × C. denticulato-platyphylla exists as a result of repeated, frequent hybridization between the parent species.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 333–343.  相似文献

? Premise of the study: One potential threat to rare species is genetic swamping caused by hybridization, but few studies have quantified this threat. Rhododendron cyanocarpum is a narrow endemic species that occurs sympatrically with potentially interfertile congeners throughout its range within Yunnan, China. We searched the entire distribution of R. cyanocarpum for hybrids and examined the patterns of hybridization to assess potential threat from hybridization. ? Methods: In a comprehensive field survey, we detected only one instance of hybridization involving R. cyanocarpum, with R. delavayi, at Huadianba near Dali. Material of both species and putative hybrids was examined using morphology, chloroplast DNA, nuclear ribosomal DNA, and Bayesian analysis of AFLP profiles. ? Key results: Of 10 putative hybrids, two were F(1)(')s and at least seven were F(2)(')s. Four backcrosses to R. delavayi were detected among material with R. delavayi-like morphology within the hybrid zone. Backcrosses to R. cyanocarpum were not detected. Therefore F(2)(')s outnumbered all other classes within the hybrid zone, a situation not previously confirmed for plants and extremely rare generally. Hybridization was asymmetrical, with R. delavayi as the maternal parent in all but one of the hybrids detected. ? Conclusions: Although natural hybridization is common in Rhododendron, it is rare in R. cyanocarpum and is apparently not accompanied by backcrossing toward R. cyanocarpum. Hence, there is no immediate risk of genetic swamping, unless habitat disturbance increases and changes the patterns of hybridization. Our study is the first to report a plant hybrid zone dominated by F(2) hybrids. This pattern might contribute to species barrier maintenance.  相似文献

Hierarchy is the main criterion for informativeness in a data set, even if no explicit reference to evolution as a causal process is provided. Sequence data (nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS) from Armeria (Plumbaginaceae) contains a certain amount of hierarchical structure as suggested by data decisiveness and distribution of tree lengths. However, ancillary evidence suggests that extensive gene flow and biased concerted evolution in these multicopy regions have significantly shaped the ITS data set. This argument is discussed using parsimony analysis of four data sets, constructed by combining wild sequences with those from different generations of artificial hybrids (wild + F1, F2, and backcrosses; wild + backcrosses; wild + F1; wild + F2). Compared to the F1 hybrids, F2 show a certain degree of homogenization in polymorphic sites. This effect reduces topological disruption caused by F1 and is considered to be illustrative of how extensive gene flow and biased concerted evolution may have modeled the wild ITS data. The possibility that hierarchy has arisen as a result of—or despite a significant contribution from—those two such potentially perturbing forces raises the question of what kind of signal are we recovering from this molecular data set.  相似文献

Hybridization between Rhododendron ferrugineum L. and R. hirsutum L. in south-eastern Alps was examined in order to (i) evaluate the breeding direction and the extent of backcrossing between hybrids and the parental species, (ii) define which processes facilitate speciation and maintain species identities and (iii) clarify the role of rock geochemistry in hybridization events. Individuals of three hybrid populations were analysed by morphological and molecular markers. The internal transcribed spacer and trnH–psbA distinguished the parental species and F1 hybrids while only the simple sequence repeat markers recognized genotype classes: F, H, F1, F2, BxF (backcross to R. ferrugineum) and BxH (backcross to R. hirsutum). Combining morphological and molecular data, we found that the tested populations had complex genetic structure: the F1 individuals produce F2 hybrids and backcross to parental species. Due to R. hirsutum phenology, most backcrossing events were with this parental species (asymmetric hybridization). Geochemical analyses indicate that alkaline soil conditions linked to calcareous dolomitic rocks promoted the genetic assimilation of R. hirsutum. In addition, R. x intermedium shows a higher edaphic adaptation than R. hirsutum as it can be found on a wide range of calcareous-dolomitic rocks as well as on weakly acidic soils of natural or anthropogenic origin.  相似文献

Ecological selection against hybrids, the reduction in hybrid fitness attributed solely to environmental factors, was tested by introducing young-of-the-year benthic, limnetic and F1 hybrid sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus to divided experimental ponds and lake enclosures. The frequency of hybrids in samples taken at the end was significantly lower than their frequency at introduction. Hybrid survival was significantly lower in pond-sides in which they were initially the most common cross type than in pond-sides in which they were initially rare, suggesting that hybrid survival may be frequency-dependent. Growth rate of F1 hybrids was marginally lower than benthic growth rates, being significantly lower than in ponds and not different in lake enclosures. The diet of hybrids overlapped with both parent species in ponds and with benthic diets in lake enclosures. The results suggest that ecological selection is acting against young-of-the-year hybrid sticklebacks.  相似文献

The hybrid origin of the western Mediterranean orchid Dactylorhiza insularis was demonstrated by genetic markers. Allozyme data showed that throughout its range D. insularis has an allotriploid constitution and reproduces apomictically. The parental species of D. insularis were identified as D. romana andD. sambucina; they contributed 2 alleles and 1 allele, respectively, at the allozyme loci studied. The maternal species of D. insularis was D. romana , as inferred from cpDNA ( trn L(UAA) intron). High genetic similarities were found when comparing present populations of D. romana and D. sambucina with their respective genomes 'frozen' in D. insularis. Dactylorhiza insularis showed fixed (or nearly fixed) heterozygosity at 11 out of the 19 loci studied, and poor genetic variation: eight multilocus genotypes were detected at allozyme level. No multilocus genotype differs from the most similar one by more than one allele substitution. All D. insularis individuals showed the same cpDNA haplotype (I) , regardless of their geographic origin and multilocus genotype. The I haplotype is similar, but not identical to that found in D. romana (R). No recurrent formation of D. insularis was observed in hybrid zones between D. romana and D. sambucina , where diploid sexual hybrids (F1; Fn, backcrosses) were detected. Available data agree with a single origin for D. insularis , which possibly occurred in the present postglacial, when D. romana and D. sambucina , expanding from their glacial refugia, came into contact. The genetic homogeneity found between D. romana and D. markusii , both from their locus classicus , indicates that the latter is a junior synonym of D. romana; on the other hand, D. romana and D. sambucina are well differentiated species ( DNei = 0.59).  相似文献
