Cultivating dinitrogen-fixing legume trees with crops in agroforestry is a relatively common N management practice in the Neotropics. The objective of this study was to assess the N2 fixation potential of three important Neotropical agroforestry tree species, Erythrina poeppigiana, Erythrina fusca, and Inga edulis, under semi-controlled field conditions. The study was conducted in the humid tropical climate of the Caribbean coastal plain of Costa Rica. In 2002, seedlings of I. edulis and Vochysia guatemalensis were planted in one-meter-deep open-ended plastic cylinders buried in soil within hedgerows of the same species. Overall tree spacing was 1 × 4 m to simulate a typical alley-cropping design. The 15N was applied as (NH4)2SO4 at 10% 15N atom excess 15 days after planting at the rate of 20 kg [N] ha−1. In 2003, seedlings of E. poeppigiana, E. fusca, and V. guatemalensis were planted in the same field using the existing cylinders. The 15N application was repeated at the rate of 20 kg [N] ha−1 15 days after planting and 10 kg [N] ha−1 was added three months after planting. Trees were harvested 9 months after planting in both years. The 15N content of leaves, branches, stems, and roots was determined by mass spectrometry. The percentage of atmospheric N fixed out of total N (%Nf) was calculated based on 15N atom excess in leaves or total biomass. The difference between the two calculation methods was insignificant for all species. Sixty percent of I. edulis trees fixed N2; %Nf was 57% for the N2-fixing trees. Biomass production and N yield were similar in N2-fixing and non-N2-fixing I. edulis. No obvious cause was found for why not all I. edulis trees fixed N2. All E. poeppigiana and E. fusca trees fixed N2; %Nf was ca. 59% and 64%, respectively. These data were extrapolated to typical agroforestry systems using published data on N recycling by the studied species. Inga edulis may recycle ca. 100 kg ha−1 a−1 of N fixed from atmosphere to soil if only 60% of trees fix N2, E. poeppigiana 60–160 kg ha−1 a−1, and E. fusca ca. 80 kg ha−1 a−1.  相似文献

Ecosystem-level experiments on the effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment and N deposition on forest trees are urgently needed. Here we present data for nine model ecosystems of spruce (Picea abies) on natural nutrient-poor montane forest soil (0.7 m2 of ground and 350 kg weight). Each system was composed of six 7-year-old (at harvest) trees each representing a different genotype, and a herbaceous understory layer (three species). The model ecosystems were exposed to three different CO2 concentrations (280, 420, 560 μl l−1) and three different rates of wet N deposition (0, 30, 90 kg ha−1 year−1) in a simulated annual course of Swiss montane climate for 3 years. The total ecosystem biomass was not affected by CO2 concentration, but increased with increasing N deposition. However, biomass allocation to roots increased with increasing CO2 leading to significantly lower leaf mass ratios (LMRs) and leaf area ratios (LARs) in trees grown at elevated CO2. In contrast to CO2 enrichment, N deposition increased biomass allocation to the aboveground plant parts, and thus LMR and LAR were higher with increasing N deposition. We observed no CO2 ×  N interactions on growth, biomass production, or allocation, and there were also no genotype × treatment interactions. The final leaf area index (LAI) of the spruce canopies was 19% smaller at 420 and 27% smaller at 560 than that measured at 280 μl CO2 l−1, but was not significantly altered by increasing N deposition. Lower LAIs at elevated CO2 largely resulted from shorter branches (less needles per individual tree) and partially from increased needle litterfall. Independently of N deposition, total aboveground N content in the spruce communities declined with increasing CO2 (−18% at 420 and −31% at 560 compared to 280 μl CO2 l−1). N deposition had the opposite effect on total above ground N content (+18% at 30 and +52% at 90 compared to 0 kg N ha−1 year−1). Our results suggest that under competitive conditions on natural forest soil, atmospheric CO2 enrichment may not lead to higher ecosystem biomass production, but N deposition is likely to do so. The reduction in LAI under elevated CO2 suggests allometric down-regulation of photosynthetic carbon uptake at the canopy level. The strong decline in the tree nitrogen mass per unit ground area in response to elevated CO2 may indicate CO2-induced reductions of soil N availability.

Summary The influence of seasonal variation on nitrogenase (N2-ase) activity of undisturbed soil-plant cores ofPanicum maximum var.trichoglume was measured using the C2H2 reduction assay. The largest N2-ase activity in the field, 14.7 g N ha−1 day−1, occurred in spring when soil moisture was high, soil temperature was low and nitrogenous fertiliser influence was at a minimum. The potential N2-ase activity of the cores, measured under controlled conditions, reached a maximum of 27.2 g N ha−1 day−1 and averaged 26.3 g N ha−1 day−1 over the 14 month sampling period. N2-ase activity was positively correlated (P=0.05) with field soil moisture and negatively correlated with field soil temperature (r=0.59 and −0.78 respectively). Multiple regression showed that 69% of the variation of N2-ase activity in the field was associated with the combined effects of soil moisture and soil temperature. Nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated from the roots ofP. maximum and based upon morphology, biochemical tests and fluorescent antibody reaction, were found to be closely related toAzospirillum lipoferum.  相似文献

Summary The total amount of nitrogen derived from symbiotic nitrogen fixation in two pea and one field bean cultivar, supplied with 50 kg N ha−1 at sowing (‘starter’-N), was estimated to 165, 136, and 186 kg N ha−1, respectively (three-year means). However, estimates varied considerably between the three years. At the full bloom/flat pod growth stage from 30 to 59 per cent of total N2 fixation had taken place. The proportion of total N derived from N2 fixation at maturity was higher in seeds than in vegetative plant parts and amounted to 59.5, 51.3 and 66.3 per cent of total above-ground plant N in the two pea cultivars and field bean, respectively (three-year means). The recovery of fertilizer N was 62.2, 70.2, 52.1, and 69.5 per cent in the two pea cultivars, field bean and barley, respectively. Growth analysis indicated that barley did not meet the claims for an ideal reference crop in the15N fertilizer dilution technique for estimating N2 fixation in pea and field bean. ‘Starter’-N neither increased the seed yield nor the N content of the grain legumes.  相似文献

Summary Differences in N2-fixation byPhaseolus vulgaris bean cultivars were successfully evaluated in the field using15N isotope dilution technique with a non-fixing test crop of a different species (wheat). The Phaseolus cultivars could have been similarly ranked for N2-fixation capacity from either seed yield or total nitrogen yield, but the isotope method provided a direct measure of N2-fixation and made it possible to estimate the proportion of fixed to total nitrogen in the crop and in plant parts. Amounts of nitrogen fixed varied between 24.59 kg N/ha for the 60-day cultivar Goiano precoce to 64.91 kg N/ha for the 90-day cultivar Carioca. The per cent of plant nitrogen due to fixation was 57–68% for the 90-day cultivars and 37% for Goiano precoce (60-day cultivar). Fertilizer utilization was 17–30% of a 20 kg N/ha fertilizer application. 100 kg N/ha fertilizer application decreased N2-fixation without suppressing it totally. Differences in yield between the highest yielding (Carioca) and the lowest (Moruna) 90-day cultivars were also due apparently to varietal differences in efficiency of conversion of nitrogen to economic matteri.e. seed, as well as to differences in capacity of genotypes for N2-fixation. The author studied the effect of different nickel concentrations (0, 0.4, 40 and 80 μM Ni) on the nitrate reductase (NR) activity of New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa Murr.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Justyna) plants supplied with different nitrogen forms (NO3 –N, NH4 +–N, NH4NO3). A low concentration of Ni (0.4 μM) did not cause statistically significant changes of the nitrate reductase activity in lettuce plants supplied with nitrate nitrogen (NO3 –N) or mixed (NH4NO3) nitrogen form, but in New Zealand spinach leaves the enzyme activity decreased and increased, respectively. The introduction of 0.4 μM Ni in the medium containing ammonium ions as a sole source of nitrogen resulted in significantly increased NR activity in lettuce roots, and did not cause statistically significant changes of the enzyme activity in New Zealand spinach plants. At a high nickel level (Ni 40 or 80 μM), a significant decrease in the NR activity was observed in New Zealand spinach plants treated with nitrate or mixed nitrogen form, but it was much more marked in leaves than in roots. An exception was lack of significant changes of the enzyme activity in spinach leaves when plants were treated with 40 μM Ni and supplied with mixed nitrogen form, which resulted in the stronger reduction of the enzyme activity in roots than in leaves. The statistically significant drop in the NR activity was recorded in the aboveground parts of nickel-stressed lettuce plants supplied with NO3 –N or NH4NO3. At the same time, there were no statistically significant changes recorded in lettuce roots, except for the drop of the enzyme activity in the roots of NO3 -fed plants grown in the nutrient solution containing 80 μM Ni. An addition of high nickel doses to the nutrient solution contained ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +–N) did not affect the NR activity in New Zealand spinach plants and caused a high increase of this enzyme in lettuce organs, especially in roots. It should be stressed that, independently of nickel dose in New Zealand spinach plants supplied with ammonium form, NR activity in roots was dramatically higher than that in leaves. Moreover, in New Zealand spinach plants treated with NH4 +–N the enzyme activity in roots was even higher than in those supplied with NO3 –N.  相似文献

The nitrogen fixing bacterial endophytes Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus and Herbaspirillum spp. have been proposed to benefit sugarcane (Saccaharum spp. hybrids) growth. Variable populations of these endophytes exist depending upon ontogenic and climatic variations as well. This study investigates the effect of variable chemical nitrogen application in soil on the population of endophytic diazotrophs, acetylene reduction ability of excised roots, plant N-nutrient use efficiency and probable interactions among different parameters in eight commercial sugarcane varieties of subtropical India. Recovery efficiency (RE), agronomic efficiency (AE), partial factor productivity (PFP) and physiologic efficiency (PE) indicators were used for accounting N-nutrient use efficiency. The population of G. diazotrophicus was more at N75 compared to N0 and N150, whereas Herbaspirillum population increased from N0 to N150. ARA was positively correlated with Gluconacetobacter population in rhizosphere and root, whereas it had poor correlation with Herbaspirillum population. Positive correlation of RE and AE with ARA of roots, Gluconacetobacter and Herbaspirillum populations in roots and stems indicate their positive contribution in total nitrogen uptake by the plant per kg of N applied. Average PFP was 808.9 at N75 compared to 408.7 at N150 indicating that N was utilized efficiently at low N input status in sugarcane. Strong positive correlations of AE75 (agronomic efficiency from 75 kg N ha−1 to 150 kg N ha−1) with N-uptake (r 2 = 0.615), cane yield (r 2 = 0.758) and PFP (r 2 = 0.758) and other parameters compared to AE (agronomic efficiency from 0 kg N ha−1 to 75 kg N ha−1 or 150 kg N ha−1) correlations with N-uptake (r 2 = 0.111), cane yield (r 2 = 0.368) and PFP (r 2 = 0.190) indicated that the AE of sugarcane was strongly directed towards producing more cane yield per unit of N fertilizer once the sugarcane plant has established using initial dose of nitrogen and thus AE75 seems to be a more appropriate indicator for accounting N-nutrient use efficiency in sugarcane.  相似文献

Summary Plants from agricultural and natural upland ecosystem were investigated for15N content to evaluate the role of symbiotic N2-fixation in the nitrogen nutrition of soybean. Increased yields and lower δ15N values of nodulating soybeansvs, non-nodulating isolines gave semi-quantitative estimates of N2 fixation. A fairly large discrepancy was found between estimations by δ15N and by N yield at 0 kg N/ha of fertilizer. More precise estimates were made by following changes in plant δ15N when fertilizer δ15N was varied near15N natural abundance level. Clearcut linear relationships between δ15N values of whole plants and of fertilizer were obtained at 30 kg N/ha of fertilizer for three kinds of soils. In experimental field plots, nodulating soybeans obtained 13±1% of their nitrogen from fertilizer, 66±8% from N2 fixation and 21±10% from soil nitrogen in Andosol brown soil; 30%, 16% and 54% in Andosol black soil; 7%, 77% and 16% in Alluvial soil, respectively. These values for N2 fixation coincided with each corresponding estimation by N yield method. Other results include: 1)15N content in upland soils and plants was variable, and may reflect differences in the mode of mineralization of soil organics, and 2) nitrogen isotopic discrimination during fertilizer uptake (δ15N of plant minus fertilizer) ranged from −2.2 to +4.9‰ at 0–30 kg N/ha of fertilizer, depending on soil type and plant species. The proposed method can accurately and relatively simply establish the importance of symbiotic nitrogen fixation for soybeans growing in agricultural settings.  相似文献

The mass transfer from root to soil by means of rhizodeposition has been studied in grasses and forest trees, but its role in fruit trees is still unknown. In this study, N fluxes from roots to soil were estimated by applying a 15N mass balance technique to the soil–tree system. Apple (Malus domestica) trees were pre-labelled with 15N and then grown outdoors in 40 L pots for one vegetative season in (1) a coarse-textured, low organic matter soil, (2) a coarse-textured, high organic matter soil, and (3) a fine-textured, high organic matter soil. At tree harvest the 15N abundance of the soils was higher than at transplanting, but the total amount of 15N present in the tree–soil system was similar at transplanting and tree harvest. The soils had a strong effect on N fluxes from and to the soil. In the fine-textured soil, 11% of the total plant-derived nitrogen was transferred to the soil, compared with 2–5% in the two coarse-textured soils. Rhizodeposition was higher in the fine soil (18% of the primary production) than in the coarse-textured soils, whereas higher soil organic matter depressed rhizodeposition. Nitrogen uptake was almost double in the coarse-textured, high organic matter soil versus the other soils. Our results indicate that belowground primary productivity is significantly underestimated if based on root production data only. Rhizodeposition represents a major process, whose role should not be underestimated in carbon and nitrogen cycles in orchard ecosystems.  相似文献

Summary Previous investigations indicated some forage grass roots in Texas are heavily colonized with N2-fixing bacteria. The most numerous N2-fixing bacteria were in the genera Klebsiella and Enterobacter. In the present investigation inoculation experiments were conducted using 18 isolates of these bacteria to determine if a N2-fixing association could be established between the bacteria and the grassesCynodon dactylon andPanicum coloratum. Plants were grown in soil for approximately 5 months in a greenhouse and were measured periodically for dry matter, nitrogen accumulation, and acetylene reduction activity. Results of the investigation indicated that 25% of the plant-soil systems were active in acetylene reduction and the activity was high enough to indicate agronomically significant quantities of N2 were being fixed (>8kg N ha−1). However, plant systems extrapolated to fix>8 kg N ha−1 contained less nitrogen and accumulated less dry matter than plants less active in acetylene reduction. Inocula could not be re-isolated from healthy grass roots indicating that the N2-fixing activity may have not have been closely assiciated with plant roots. Future research is needed to determine factors limiting colonization of grass roots.  相似文献

Ponderosa Pine Responses to Elevated CO2and Nitrogen Fertilization   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The effects of elevated CO2 (ambient, +175, and +350 μl l−1) and nitrogen fertilization (0, 100, and 200 kg N ha−1 yr−1 as ammonium sulfate) on C and N accumulations in biomass and soils planted with ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws) over a 6-year study period are reported. Both nitrogen fertilization and elevated CO2 caused increases in C and N contents of vegetation over the study period. The pattern of responses varied over time. Responses to CO2 decreased in the +175 μl l−1 and increased in the +350 μl l−1 after the first year, whereas responses to N decreased after the first year and became non-significant by year six. Foliar N concentrations were lower and tree C:N ratios were higher with elevated CO2 in the early years, but this was offset by the increases in biomass, resulting in substantial increases in N uptake with elevated CO2. Nitrogen budget estimates showed that the major source of the N for unfertilized trees, with or without elevated CO2, was likely the soil organic N pool. There were no effects of elevated CO2 on soil C, but a significant decrease in soil N and an increase in soil C:N ratio in year six. Nitrogen fertilization had no significant effect on tree C:N ratios, foliar N concentrations, soil C content, soil N content, or soil C:N ratios. There were no significant interactions between CO2 and N treatments, indicating that N fertilization had no effect on responses to CO2 and that CO2 treatments had no effect on responses to N fertilization. These results illustrate the importance of long-term studies involving more than one level of treatment to assess the effects of elevated CO2.  相似文献

Three separate experiments were conducted in the nursery using grassland soil as a growing medium. The first experiment was conducted to assess the nodulation of the two legume trees grown in unamended soil, the second was done to determine the effects of N-fertilizer application on the interaction of the five Rhizobium isolates withA. falcataria and the third experiment was conducted to determine the effects of liming on theRhizobium × A. mangium interaction. Three local Rhizobium isolates, A16, A18, and A14 were effective forA. falcataria with A16 as the most promising strain under the conditions described. In general, application of combined nitrogen suppressed nodulation ofA. falcataria. Nodulation in the absence of combined N exceeded those fertilized with 30 kg N ha−1 by 114.0%, 60 kg N ha−1 by 209.6% and 100 kg N ha−1 by 237.1%. Two local isolates, Am10 and Am2, and an introduced strain, NA 1533 from Australia were promising forA. mangium. Unlike inA. falcataria, the application of combined nitrogen at the rate of 100 kg N ha−1 did not suppress nodulation inA. mangium. Liming the soil to pH 6.5 regardless of nitrogen fertilizer application improved the performance of the Rhizobium—A. mangium symbiosis.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of growth and nitrogen fixation in field-grown pea   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The seasonal patterns of growth and symbiotic N2 fixation under field conditions were studied by growth analysis and use of15N-labelled fertilizer in a determinate pea cultivar (Pisum sativum L.) grown for harvest at the dry seed stage. The patterns of fertilizer N-uptake were almost identical in pea and barley (the non-fixing reference crop), but more fertilizer-N was recovered in barley than in pea. The estimated rate of N2 fixation in pea gradually increased during the pre-flowering and flowering growth stages and reached a maximum of 10 kg N fixed per ha per day nine to ten weeks after seedling emergence. This was the time of early pod-development (flat pod growth stage) and also the time for maximum crop growth rate and maximum green leaf area index. A steep drop in N2 fixation rate occurred during the following week. This drop was simultaneous with lodging of the crop, pod-filling (round pod growth stage) and the initiation of mobilization of nitrogen from vegetative organs. The application of fertilizer-N inhibited the rate of N2 fixation only during that period of growth, when the main part of fertilizer-N was taken up and shortly after. Total accumulation of fixed nitrogen was estimated to be 244, 238 and 213 kg N ha−1 in pea supplied with nil, 25 or 50 kg NO 3 −N ha−1, respectively. About one-fourth of total N2 fixation was carried out during preflowering, one fourth during the two weeks of flowering and the remainder during post-flowering. About 55% of the amount of N present in pods at maturity was estimated to be derived from mobilization of N from vegetative organs. “Starter” N (25 or 50 kg NO 3 −N ha−1) did not significantly influence either dry matter and nitrogen accumulation or the development of leaf area. Neither root length and root biomass determined 8 weeks after seedling emergence nor the yield of seed dry matter and nitrogen at maturity were influenced by fertilizer application.  相似文献

This study examined the nitrogen (N) dynamics of a black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP)-dominated chronosequence in Manitoba, Canada. The seven sites studied each contained separate well- and poorly drained stands, originated from stand-killing wildfires, and were between 3 and 151 years old. Our goals were to (i) measure total N concentration ([N]) of all biomass components and major soil horizons; (ii) compare N content and select vegetation N cycle processes among the stands; and (iii) examine relationships between ecosystem C and N cycling for these stands. Vegetation [N] varied significantly by tissue type, species, soil drainage, and stand age; woody debris [N] increased with decay state and decreased with debris size. Soil [N] declined with horizon depth but did not vary with stand age. Total (live + dead) biomass N content ranged from 18.4 to 99.7 g N m−2 in the well-drained stands and 37.8–154.6 g N m−2 in the poorly drained stands. Mean soil N content (380.6 g N m−2) was unaffected by stand age. Annual vegetation N requirement (5.9 and 8.4 g N m−2 yr−1 in the middle-aged well- and poorly drained stands, respectively) was dominated by trees and fine roots in the well-drained stands, and bryophytes in the poorly drained stands. Fraction N retranslocated was significantly higher in deciduous than evergreen tree species, and in older than younger stands. Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) was significantly lower in bryophytes than in trees, and in deciduous than in evergreen trees. Tree NUE increased with stand age, but overall stand NUE was roughly constant (∼ ∼150 g g−1 N) across the entire chronosequence.  相似文献

Complementarity in the distribution of tree and crop root systems is important to minimise competition for resources whilst maximising resource use in agroforestry systems. A field study was conducted on a kaolinitic Oxisol in the sub-humid highlands of western Kenya to compare the distribution and dynamics of root length and biomass of a 3-year-old Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. ex R. Br. (grevillea) tree row and a 3-year-old Senna spectabilis DC. (senna) hedgerow grown with Zea mays L. (maize). Tree roots were sampled to a 300 cm depth and 525 cm distance from the tree rows, both before and after maize cropping. Maize roots were sampled at two distances from the tree rows (75–150 cm and 450–525 cm) to a maximum depth of 180 cm, at three developmental stages. The mean root length density (Lrv) of the trees in the upper 15 cm was 0.55 cm cm−3 for grevillea and 1.44 cm cm−3 for senna, at the start of the cropping season. The Lrv of senna decreased at every depth during the cropping season, whereas the Lrv of grevillea only decreased in the crop rooting zone. The fine root length of the trees decreased by about 35% for grevillea and 65% for senna, because of maize competition, manual weeding, seasonal senescence or pruning regime (senna). At anthesis, the Lrv of maize in the upper 15 cm was between 0.8 and 1.5 cm cm−3. Maize root length decreased with greater proximity to the tree rows, potentially reducing its ability to compete for soil resources. However, the specific root length (m g−1) of maize was about twice that of the trees, so may have had a competitive uptake advantage even when tree root length was greater. Differences in maize fine root length and biomass suggest that competition for soil resources and hence fine root length may have been more important for maize grown with senna than grevillea. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In N-limited ecosystems, fertilization by N deposition may enhance plant growth and thus impact C sequestration. In many N deposition–C sequestration experiments, N is added directly to the soil, bypassing canopy processes and potentially favoring N immobilization by the soil. To understand the impact of enhanced N deposition on a low fertility unmanaged forest and better emulate natural N deposition processes, we added 18 kg N ha−1 year−1 as dissolved NH4NO3 directly to the canopy of 21 ha of spruce-hemlock forest. In two 0.3-ha subplots, the added N was isotopically labeled as 15NH4 + or 15NO3 (1% final enrichment). Among ecosystem pools, we recovered 38 and 67% of the 15N added as 15NH4 + and 15NO3 , respectively. Of 15N recoverable in plant biomass, only 3–6% was recovered in live foliage and bole wood. Tree twigs, branches, and bark constituted the most important plant sinks for both NO3 and NH4 +, together accounting for 25–50% of 15N recovery for these ions, respectively. Forest floor and soil 15N retention was small compared to previous studies; the litter layer and well-humified O horizon were important sinks for NH4 + (9%) and NO3 (7%). Retention by canopy elements (surfaces of branches and boles) provided a substantial sink for N that may have been through physico-chemical processes rather than by N assimilation as indicated by poor recoveries in wood tissues. Canopy retention of precipitation-borne N added in this particular manner may thus not become plant-available N for several years. Despite a large canopy N retention potential in this forest, C sequestration into new wood growth as a result of the N addition was only ~16 g C m−2 year−1 or about 10% above the current net annual C sequestration for this site.  相似文献

Summary Two experiments were carried out with two nodulating and non-nodulating soybean isolines, with three different levels of N as (15NH4)2SO4 at the equivalent of 0, 25 and 50 kg N/ha. In the first experiment three seeds were sown in each pot and the plants harvested at 35, 55 and 75 days. In the second experiment only one seed was sown per pot and harvested at 75 days.Isotope dilution technique and in certain cases natural isotope variation (15N) was used to determine directly the origin of nitrogen in the plant, whether from soil, fertilizer or biological N2-fixation. The use of nodulating and non-nodulating isolines enabled comparison with the classical method of estimating N2-fixation by difference from total plant N. Results at the 75 day harvest were similar for either method, but at the earlier harvests, particularly at 35 days, the total-N method was inadequate. The isotope method appeared more sensitive while the total-N method suffered from greater variability with correspondingly high standard errors and significant differences. It was found that by the 35 and 55 day harvests hardly any N2-fixation had taken place, plant nitrogen being almost entirely derived from soil or fertilizer N. Plants in competition used up soil fertilizer N more rapidly, thus stimulating symbiotic nitrogen fixation. When only one plant was grown in each pot it had a greater proportion of N derived from soil or fertilizer, and less N derived from fixation. In general the15N data showed that only about 25% of the applied fertilizer N was absorbed by the plant. The nodulating isoline absorbed more N than the non-nodulating plants. This suggests a possible synergistic effect of N2-fixation on N derived from other sources, giving an increase in total-N content of nudulated plants. The N derived from N2-fixation was scarcely detectable in the roots but appeared to be translocated almost entirely to shoots and pods. With 25 kg N/ha the greater proportion of the nitrogen in the pods was derived from N2-fixation. Even with 50 kg N/ha the nitrogen in the pods derived from fixation remained high, that being derived from fertilizer being less than 15%. About 80% of the nitrogen in the nodules was due to fixation. In the present experiment the application of 25 kg N/ha appeared sufficient to give maximum N absorption by both isolines. At this level symbiotic fixation by Rhizobium remained high in nodulating plants, while the proportion of total N due to fixation was reduced with 50 kg N/ha.UNDP/IAEA Project BRA 78/006.  相似文献

Summary Aerobic and anaerobic N2-fixing bacteria developed in the rhizosphere of barley seedlings and exhibited N2ase activity when seedlings were grown in sterilized sand-nutrient cultures containing low levels of combined nitrogen. The source of the N2-fixing bacteria appeared to be the seed. Average daily rates up to 0.9 μmoles C2H4 h−1 g−1 dry root tissue were measured, but the intensity of the activity was affected by moisture levels and concentration of combined N in the rhizosphere. Removal and washing of the roots did not remove the activity, and roots remained active even after surface-sterilization. An unidentified aerobic N2-fixing bacterium was isolated from the rhizoplane of active barley roots. Inoculation of barley seedlings with the aerobic N2-fixing bacterium enhanced N2ase activity of excised roots 10-fold, with average rates of 0.9, 1.1 and 1.3 μmoles h−1 g−1 dry root assayed under pO2 of 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04 atm respectively. The aerobic N2-fixing bacterium also exhibited N2ase activity when inoculated into the rhizosphere of oat, rice and wheat seedlings. Microscopic observations of sterilized live and stained barley roots suggest that the aerobic N2-fixing bacterium is an endophyte which infects root tissue and metamorphoses into vesicle-like structures.  相似文献

Nitrate in the unsaturated zone between the soil surface and the water table was studied in agroforestry Parklands in north western Senegal by examination of samples obtained by hand auger. Depending on location, water tables existed at depths between 10 and 35m below ground. Previous studies of groundwater in this region had found that large concentrations of nitrate were unconnected with anthropogenic activity. The objective of this study was to determine whether nitrogen fixing vegetation had a role in groundwater nitrate accumulation and whether roots of trees were located deeply enough to access the nitrate. Accordingly, sample profiles were augered close to stems of nitrogen fixing trees, non-nitrogen fixing trees and also in adjacent areas that were unaffected by tree presence. These adjacent areas were typically open pasture or cultivated fields. Tree fine roots were quantified in the samples and examined for the presence of mycorrhizas. Similarly, sand/soil samples were examined and tested for the presence of nitrogen fixing rhizobia that were capable of forming functional nodules on appropriate host plants. Concentrations of nitrate were greatest in soils beneath nitrogen fixing trees and nitrate was more plentiful in profiles augered beneath nitrogen fixing crops than it was elsewhere suggesting that N-fixation was the source of the nitrate. The concentrrations of nitrate that were found in the unsaturated zone were greatly in excess of the WHO recommended limit for nitrate in drinking water. High NO3-N/Cl ratios confirm insitu production of nitrate, and indicate that this is a natural baseline occurrence related to N-fixation. The nitrate is moving down the profile and impacts the groundwater unless it can be intercepted by plant roots. NO3-N amounts in solution in the soil profile varied between 75 and 1000kg ha–1 beneath trees and between 120 and 400kg ha–1 in areas outwith tree crowns. Although these quantities of N occupy the lower end of the range of N values obtained in north American deserts, they comprise a considerable dryland resource where amounts of organic fertilizer are limited and where cost prohibits the use of commercial fertilizers. Roots of both nitrogen fixing and non-nitrogen fixing trees were deep enough to access the nitrate but the small amounts of available water at intermediate depths suggest that large scale uptake of nitrate will only be possible in the wetter zones located close to the water table. Shallow roots tended to be more heavily colonized by mycorrhizas than deeper roots but mycorrhizas were recovered from roots located 22m below ground. Tree roots and rhizobia had similar patterns of distribution. They were commonest close to the soil surface, less frequent at intermediate depths and tended to increase in frequency close to the water table.  相似文献
