Synopsis Egg size, fecundity, nest site selection, and breeding structure of the amphidromous Hawaiian goby Lentipes concolor were studied to determine if there was any relationship between these aspects of the breeding biology of this fish and the very long larval period of Hawaiian stream gobies. To do this, these parameters were compared with those known for other gobioid fishes. While eggs were small and females were found to lay up to four nests in a season, reproductive biology and mating behavior of L. concolor were typical of many gobies in spite of its amphidromous life history pattern. Lentipes concolor nests were found from October to June with a spawning peak in February. Nests tended to be positioned closer to the stream bank, and under larger rocks than if they were situated randomly. Depth and mean water column velocity over nest sites did not differ from that at randomly selected points in the stream.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy reveals the presence of ciliated epidermal cells that form halos around canal pores and pit lines of the mechanoreceptive lateral line system in two actinopterygian fish, Polypterus and Acipenser. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the cilia exhibit a typical 9 + 2 microtubule configuration and are not directionally polarized. The function, developmental origin and systematic significance of ciliated epidermal cells in actinopterygian fish are considered.  相似文献

  • Genetic differences among freshwater fish populations are dependent on life‐history characteristics of the species, including the range of adult dispersal and the extent of homing to natal breeding grounds. However, the effects of variation in such characteristics on population genetic connectivity are rarely studied comparatively among closely related species.
  • We studied population genetic structure within three congeneric cyprinid species from the Lake Malawi catchment that differ substantially in life‐history traits and conservation status, using a combination of microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA markers. Mpasa (Opsaridium microlepis) is a large (70 cm total length) migratory species that spawns in rivers, but as an adult is exclusively known from the main lake body. Sanjika (Opsaridium microcephalum), is a medium size (30 cm total length) species that exists in lake breeding, river‐lake migratory and apparently landlocked populations. Dwarf sanjika (Opsaridium tweddleorum) is a small non‐migratory species (15 cm total length) that persists in small tributaries surrounding the main lake and adjoining rivers.
  • The results revealed striking differences among the three species in spatial genetic structuring. The river‐lake migratory mpasa showed only weak yet significant population genetic structure within the main Lake Malawi catchment, suggesting that there is no strong natal homing. The habitat‐generalist sanjika showed only weak spatial genetic differentiation at microsatellite loci within the Lake Malawi catchment, but moderate structure in mitochondrial DNA, potentially reflecting male‐biased dispersal. The river‐restricted dwarf sanjika showed strong genetic structure in both microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA, suggesting strictly limited dispersal at both adult and juvenile stages.
  • We conclude that contrasting migration life histories have resulted in dramatically different patterns of population genetic structure among these congeneric species. The observed patterns demonstrate how divergent life‐history evolution may strongly influence broader patterns of population genetic connectivity in freshwater fish, with consequences for management and conservation. Specifically the results suggesting gene flow among Lake Malawi populations of mpasa, an IUCN red‐listed ‘Endangered’ species endemic to the lake catchment, imply that conservation initiatives operating at both local and catchment scales are needed to reverse local population decline.

In their life cycle, especially at early life stages, fishes pass through distinct growth stanzas with different length‐weight relationship patterns. Salmonid fish fry emergence from the redd gravel is a crucial moment in their life history. This study presents an ontogenic change in allometric length–weight relationship scaling of sea trout Salmo trutta at the time of emergence from the natural redds in a small lowland stream of western Lithuania. The paper also gives shrinkage rates and correction factors for emergent Salmo trutta fry after protracted formalin preservation.  相似文献

Many marine fishes show conspicuous red fluorescent body patterns. Recent work suggests that red fluorescence may be used as a visual colour cue in these species. Very few studies, however, have as yet been able to demonstrate that red fluorescent fish can actually perceive their own fluorescence. This is the first study to our knowledge in which a red fluorescent fish is trained to assess whether it can recognize red fluorescence. We used the triplefin Tripterygion delaisi, a species with conspicuous red fluorescent eye rings. Training and testing involved repeated binary choices between grey and red fluorescence cues. The training and testing were carried out under broad spectral illumination. The final testing phase involved cyan light illumination, mimicking natural ambient light at depth. When testing all nine combinations of three grey brightness levels against three red fluorescence brightness levels, individuals made significantly more correct choices than the random expectation under broad as well as cyan illumination. Under cyan illumination, fish trained on red chose the correct cue more often compared to fish trained on grey. An analysis of the effect of the brightness levels suggests that fish did indeed make their choices based on chromatic more than achromatic cues: The three grey levels did not affect the proportion of correct choices. We conclude that T. delaisi can perceive and respond to levels of fluorescence that are similar to its own. We also discuss the difficulties that can arise from using a binary choice design on a fish with a cryptobenthic lifestyle. We argue in favour of using sequential choice designs in future studies of T. delaisi.  相似文献

One of the major challenges facing fishery scientists and managers today is determining how fish populations are influenced by habitat conditions. Many approaches have been explored to address this challenge, all of which involve modeling at one level or another. In this paper, we explore a process-oriented model approach whereby the critical population processes of birth and death rates are explicitly linked to habitat conditions. Application of this approach to five species of Great Lakes fishes including: walleye (Sander vitreus), lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss), yielded a number of insights into the modeling process. One of the foremost insights is that processes determining movement and transport of fish are critical components of such models since these processes largely determine the habitats fish occupy. Because of the importance of fish location, an individual-based model appears to be a nearly inescapable modeling requirement. There is, however, a paucity of field-based data directly relating birth, death, and movement rates to habitat conditions experienced by individual fish. There is also a paucity of habitat information at a fine temporal and spatial scale for many important habitat variables. Finally, the general occurrence of strong ontogenetic changes in the response of different life stages to habitat conditions emphasizes the need for a modeling approach that considers all life stages in an integrated fashion.  相似文献

Nemerteans are predators of a wide variety of animals, but little is known of their role as prey for other animals. The presence of toxins in the tissues and secretions of these worms has led to the assumption usually suggested that they are ingested only rarely. However, analysis of a Food Habits Data Base from the United States National Marine Fisheries Service, compiled for fishes collected in the Atlantic Ocean from the Canadian border to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (1973–1990), showed that nemerteans were recovered from the stomachs of 27 species of fishes in 14 families. They were found in 223 of 26 642 (0.84%) fish stomachs examined in the laboratory, but only in 0.09% of 58 812 fish examined in the field. Among species in the former category, for which 1000 were examined, the winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus(Walbaum), and the yellowtail flounder, Limanda ferruginea (Storer), had the greatest frequency of nemerteans, 71 of 1545 (4.6%) and 33 of 1045 (3.2%), respectively. These nemerteans were identified as Nemertea, Cerebratulus sp. or Micrura sp., but it is likely that they were all of a Cerebratulus-like type. Nemerteans have also been recorded from the guts of eight additional species (including four additional families) of fishes collected from the western Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, eastern Pacific Ocean (Washington, Alaska), North Sea and Indian Ocean off South Africa. The black-bellied plover, Pluvialis squatarola(L.), semipalmated plover, Charadrius semipalmatus Bonapart and the herring gull, Larus argentatus Pontoppidan are the only three species known to feed on nemerteans (Cerebratulus lacteus (Leidy) and Paranemertes peregrina Coe by the black-bellied plover and C. lacteus by the other species). Several species of nemerteans are known to ingest other nemerteans, and several arthropods, a squid, and a few other invertebrates also feed on these worms. On the other hand, careful laboratory studies have shown that some members of the Palaeonemertea, Heteronemertea and Hoplonemertea, when fed to various species of fishes, crustaceans (Astacidea, Anomura, Brachyura and Amphipoda) and a polychaete, were rejected, usually violently. There is a history of using large nemerteans, e.g. Cerebratulus lacteus and Polybrachiorhynchus dayi, as bait by sport fishermen in the United States and South Africa. The incongruity of successfuly using these toxic animals to catch fish is discussed in relation to conclusions on the importance of nemerteans as prey in the marine environment.  相似文献

Light and electron microscopic studies revealed ciliation of the epithelium of the entire gastro-intestinal tract of Polypterus. Acidophil cells were found in the different regions of the alimentary canal, including its derivatives (the lungs and hepato-pancreatic ducts). Compared to other primitive forms and modern teleosts, the extreme fusion of the intestinal caeca in Polypterus, the ciliation and the overall dispersion of acidophil cells may represent a special organization inherited from a palaeoniscoid ancestor. Attention is also drawn to a possible channel of early evolution and function of the stomach diverticulum.  相似文献

Synopsis Analysis of the piscivore guild in fish species-rich lake and stream systems in eastern Ontario showed the co-occurrence of three types: (1) specialists that became piscivorous at the age of a few weeks (Esox, Micropterus); (2) ‘secondary’ piscivores that are fish-eaters only later in life (Perca, Ambloplites); and (3) species in which fish consumption is limited to taking some larvae (Lepomis macrochirus). In the first group the basic series of dietary shifts that characterize many long-lived fish (i.e. zooplankton followed by small invertebrates then large invertebrates and finally fish); is greatly accelerated. Prey size increases with growth. Overall prey selection was on the basis of body size and abundance. Most piscivores took a range of fish prey. There was little evidence of specialization at the species level. Esox and Micropterus spawn some weeks ahead of their major prey species. This is seen as adaptive. Their young harvest the larvae of the latter. The ensuing predator/prey association with growth is highly advantageous to the piscivore as prey of optimum body size are thus continually available.  相似文献

For many genes, ray-finned fish (Actinopterygii) have two paralogous copies, where only one ortholog is present in tetrapods. The discovery of an additional, almost-complete set of Hox clusters in teleosts (zebrafish, pufferfish, medaka, and cichlid) but not in basal actinopterygian lineages (Polypterus) led to the formulation of the fish-specific genome duplication hypothesis. The phylogenetic timing of this genome duplication during the evolution of ray-finned fish is unknown, since only a few species of basal fish lineages have been investigated so far. In this study, three nuclear genes (fzd8, sox11, tyrosinase) were sequenced from sturgeons (Acipenseriformes), gars (Semionotiformes), bony tongues (Osteoglossomorpha), and a tenpounder (Elopomorpha). For these three genes, two copies have been described previously teleosts (e.g., zebrafish, pufferfish), but only one orthologous copy is found in tetrapods. Individual gene trees for these three genes and a concatenated dataset support the hypothesis that the fish-specific genome duplication event took place after the split of the Acipenseriformes and the Semionotiformes from the lineage leading to teleost fish but before the divergence of Osteoglossiformes. If these three genes were duplicated during the proposed fish-specific genome duplication event, then this event separates the species-poor early-branching lineages from the species-rich teleost lineage. The additional number of genes resulting from this event might have facilitated the evolutionary radiation and the phenotypic diversification of the teleost fish.[Reviewing Editor: Martin Kreitman]  相似文献

In the early nineteen sixties, Arambourg and Magnier found some freshwater fish (i.e., Polypterus sp., Siluriformes indet. and Lates sp.) mixed with marine members in an Eocene vertebrate assemblage at Gebel Coquin, in the southern Libyan Desert. This locality, aged ca 37–39Ma and now known under the name of Dur At-Talah, has been recently excavated. A new fish assemblage, mostly composed of teeth, was collected by the Mission Paléontologique Franco-Libyenne. In this paper, we describe freshwater fish members including a dipnoan (Protopterus sp.), and several actinopterygians: bichir (Polypterus sp.), aba fish (Gymnarchus sp.), several catfishes (Chrysichthys sp. and a mochokid indet.), several characiforms (including the tiger fish Hydrocynus sp., and one or two alestin-like fish), and perciforms (including the snake-head fish Parachanna sp. and at least one cichlid). Together with the fossiliferous outcrops at Birket Qarun in Egypt, the Libyan site at Dur At-Talah reduces a 10-Ma chronological gap in the fossil record of African freshwater fish. Their fish assemblages overlap in their composition and thus constitute a rather homogenous, original and significant amount of new elements regarding the Paleogene African ichthyofauna. This supports the establishment of the modern African freshwater fish fauna during this time period because these sites mostly contain the earliest members known in modern genera.  相似文献

Summary The neuro-endocrine cells of fish skin and respiratory surfaces, and their bioactive secretion as far as is known, are reviewed, and compared with similar elements in tetrapods, particularly amphibians. In the skin of teleost fish, immunohistochemistry has shown that Merkel cells react for serotonin, neuron-specific enolase and enkephalins. The pharmacology is not established in dipnoans or lampreys. In some teleosts, neuromasts react for substance P and leu-enkephalins; substance P is also reported from some ampullary organs (electroreceptors). Taste buds of teleosts may react for enkephalin and substance P. Basal cells of taste buds react for serotonin and neuron-specific enolase. Some unicellular skin glands of teleosts express bioactive compounds, including serotonin and some peptides; this ectopic expression is paralleled in amphibian skin glands. The dipnoan Protopterus has innervated pulmonary neuro-endocrine cells in the pneumatic duct region with dense-cored vesicles. In Polypterus and Amia the lungs have serotonin-positive neuro-endocrine cells that are apparently not innervated. In fish gills, a closed type of neuro-endocrine cell reacts for serotonin, an open type for enkephalins and some calcium-binding proteins (calbindin, calmodulin and S-100 protein). The functions of neuro-endocrine cells in fishes await investigation, but it is assumed they are regulatory.

We describe life history tactics under laboratory conditions of two species of cladocerans of the genus Simocephalus. The populations live in two habitats with different characteristics. S. acutirostratus was isolated from a small temporary pool without fish. S. latirostris was found in the marginal vegetation of a reservoir with fish. Their life history was monitored for differences in traits such as clutch size, neonate size, age distribution, reproductive effort and adult survival. Our results show that S. acutirostratus (the larger-sized species) grows until it reaches the optimal foraging size and then begins to reproduce, while S. latirostris (the smaller-sized species) starts breeding before reaching the optimal foraging size, allocating energy mainly to reproduction. We explore the possibility that divergences in life history may arise as a response to environmental stress such as that produced by fishes.  相似文献

Clarias batrachus (walking catfish) is an invasive species in Florida, renowned for its air-breathing and terrestrial locomotor capabilities. However, it is unknown how this species orients in terrestrial environments. Furthermore, while anecdotal life history information is widespread for this species in its nonnative range, little of this information exists in the literature. The goals of this study were to identify sensory modalities that C. batrachus use to orient on land, and to describe the natural history of this species in its nonnative range. Fish (n = 150) were collected from around Ruskin, FL, and housed in a greenhouse, where experiments took place. Individual catfish were placed in the center of a terrestrial arena and were exposed to nine treatments: two controls, L-alanine, quinine, allyl isothiocynate, sucrose, volatile hydrogen sulphide, pond water and aluminium foil. These fish exhibited significantly positive chemotaxis toward alanine and pond water, and negative chemotaxis away from volatile hydrogen sulphide, suggesting chemoreception – both through direct contact and through the air – is important to their terrestrial orientation. Additionally, 88 people from Florida wildlife-related Facebook groups who have personal observations of C. batrachus on land were interviewed for information regarding their terrestrial natural history. These data were combined with observations from 38 YouTube videos. C. batrachus appear to emerge most frequently during or just after heavy summer rains, particularly from stormwater drains in urban areas, where they may feed on terrestrial invertebrates. By better understanding the full life history of C. batrachus, we can improve management of this species.  相似文献

Although heritability estimates for traits potentially under natural selection are increasingly being reported, their estimation remains a challenge if we are to understand the patterns of adaptive phenotypic change in nature. Given the potentially important role of selection on the early life phenotype, and thereby on future life history events in many fish species, we conducted a common garden experiment, using the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), with two major aims. The first objective is to determine how the site of origin, the paternal sexual tactic and additive genetic effects influence phenotypic variation of several morphological traits at hatching and emergence. The second aim is to test whether a link exists between phenotypic characteristics early in life and the incidence of male alternative tactics later in life. We found no evidence of a site or paternal effect on any morphological trait at hatching or emergence, suggesting that the spatial phenotypic differences observed in the natural river system from which these fish originated are mainly environmentally driven. However, we do find significant heritabilities and maternal effects for several traits, including body size. No direct evidence was found correlating the incidence of precocious maturation with early life characteristics. We suggest that under good growing conditions, body size and other traits at early developmental stages are not reliable cues for the surpassing of the threshold values associated with male sexual development.  相似文献

The results of 6-year-long observations on the size of some fish species of the Far East State Marine Reserve (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan) suggest that resident fishes attain maximum size in the waters of the reserve. Compared to previously known sizes of fish, record values were found for the white-spotted greenling Hexagrammos stelleri (540 mm), the frog sculpin Myoxocephalus stelleri (490 mm), the snowy sculpin M. brandti (418 mm); the fringed blenny Chirolophis japonicus (520 mm), and some other fishes. These data confirm the opinion that the Marine Reserve waters are the reservation of the genofond of the inhabiting fish.  相似文献

The life history in a brackish water type of the ninespine stickleback, Pungitius pungitius, was studied by examining the strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations in the otoliths. The fluctuating patterns of Sr/Ca ratios along the life history transect in the otoliths varied widely among fish in spite of their identification as brackish water type as estimated by morphological characteristics. More than 70% fish showed the intermediate otolith Sr/Ca ratio throughout, averaging 5.23–7.71 × 10−3. Besides this brackish water resident life history type of P. pungitius, other sticklebacks had anadromous (25%) and freshwater amphidromous (2.5%) life history types. These findings clearly indicate that the migration of the ninespine stickleback between fresh and sea waters is obligatory but facultative having an ability to utilize the full range of salinity in its life history.  相似文献

Synopsis A population of central stonerollers, Campostoma anomalum, in Harker's Run, Butler County, Ohio U.S.A., was examined during autumn, 1980, to determine the species' movements, density, and home range size. During the study period, 170 fish were marked by fin clips and released into the specific pool or riffle where they were captured within the 187 m study section. Eighty percent of the recaptured, marked fish (20) were recaptured in their initial capture area (specific pool or riffle). No fish moved more than 135 m from its original capture area. Density estimates of C. anomalum for each pool and riffle within the study section ranged from 0.10–3.91 fish m−2 (mean = 1.25 fish m−2). Home range size was estimated to be 35.2 ± 14.1 m (mean ± 95% CI) of stream length. Campostoma anomalum in Harker's Run occurred at densities similar to those reported for the species in other streams, and their home ranges in this system were of similar size to those of other small, stream-dwelling fishes.  相似文献
