The net assimilation rate (EA), relative growth-rate (Rw), andleaf-area ratio (FA) were measured for rape (Brassica napus),sunflower (Hetianthus annuus), and maize (Zea mays) at varioustimes of year in an arid climate, using young plants grown widelyspaced on nutrient culture. Multiple regression analysis accountedfor 90–95 per cent of the variation in EA and RW in termsof two climatic variables: mean temperature and radiation receipt. EA rose linearly with radiation in all three species; increasein EA with temperature was greatest in maize and least (notsignificant) in rape. RWrose with radiation and temperature, the latter being the more important variable especially in coolweather; a temperature optimum was shown at 24° C in rape.FA rose with increase in temperature or decrease in radiation;its variation was due to change in leaf area/leaf weight ratherthan in leaf weight/plant weight. Multiple regression analyses can lead to faulty interpretationif the independent variables are correlated (as are climaticvariables in nature), but conclusions can be checked by controlled-environmentstudies in which climatic factors are not correlated. The presentconclusions are supported by such studies. The regression equations, coupled with average weather records, indicate seasonal cycles of growth parameters. EA is maximalnear midsummer and minimal near midwinter, following the radiationcycle. Maxima and minima in RW are about a month later, becauseRW is affected by the temperature cycle and this lags behindthe radiation cycle. FA is maximal in autumn and minimal inspring. EA is highest where radiation receipts near 750 cal cm–2day–1 coincide with high temperatures. This combinationoccurs only in clear midsummer weather at low latitudes, andis maintained over long periods only in arid regions. The fact that EA rose linearly with radiation suggests thatleaf water deficits arising under high radiation had littleeffect on EA and that saturating levels of light were very high.  相似文献

Three experiments on the growth of watered nursery oil palmsare described, the results of which provide estimates of seasonalvariation in net assimilation rate (EA) and relative growth-rate(Rw) in the tropics (6° 33' N.). The range of values obtained for EA and Rw is similar to thatfound with seedlings and during early growth in the nursery(EA = o.I8–o.32 g/dm2/week, Rw= o.84–I.70 per cent/day)and there is very little effect of season on EA; such variationas exists appears to be related to solar radiation. A spacing experiment indicated that EA is independent of leafarea index (L) when L is below about 2.2, but that above thislevel EA decreases with increasing L, falling to zero at L =5.4. The crop growth-rate (C) is maximal when L is between 2.5and 3, the maximum value observed was o.62 g/dm2/week (equivalentto 3.22 x104 kg/ha/annum). These results are compared with other estimates of growth andassimilation rates of seedling, nursery and adult oil palms, and are discussed in relation to the efficiency of energy fixation, and apparent growth-rates.  相似文献

Sugar-beet, potato, and barley plants were grown in a controlledenvironment, for periods of up to 10 weeks from sowing, witha light intensity of 1,8oo f.c. (4·9 cal./cm.2/hr.) anda temperature of 20° C. during the 18-hour photoperiod and15° C. during the dark period, to test whether net assimilationrate varied with age and differed between the three species. Net assimilation rate of all species based on leaf area (EA)fell approximately linearly with time. During 5 weeks EA ofsugar-beet decreased by only about 20 per cent. and EA of potatodecreased by 50 per cent. EA of barley remained approximatelyconstant for 4 weeks after sowing and was halved during thesubsequent 4 weeks. The average value of EA for all times wasgreatest for sugarbeet and least for barley. Net assimilation rates based on leaf weight (EW) and leaf N(EN) decreased at about 15 per cent. of the initial value perweek for all species; this was similar to the mean rate of decreaseof EA of potato and barley, but greater than that of EA of sugar-beet.Mean values of EW or EN for potato and barley were similar andless than for sugar-beet. Relative growth rate (RW), relative leaf growth-rate (RA), andleaf-area ratio (F) fell with time at similar rates for allspecies. Average values of RW decreased and of F increased inthe order sugar-beet, potato, barley. RA was greatest for potatoand least for barley.  相似文献

The single-gene mutation afila in pea (Pisum sativum L.) resultsin the replacement of proximal leaflets with branched tendrils, thereby reducing leaf area. This study investigated whethertheafila line could adjust biomass partitioning when exposedto varying nutrient regimes, to compensate for reduced leafarea, compared with wild-type plants. Wild-type and afila near-isogeniclines were grown in solution culture with nitrate-N added toinitially N-starved seedlings at relative addition rates (RN)of 0.06, 0.12, 0.15 and 0.50 d-1. The relative growth rate (RW)of the whole plants closely matched RNat 0.06 and 0.12 d-1,but higher RNresulted in a slightly higher growth rate. At agiven RN, the wild-type line had lower plant nitrogen statusthan the afila line. RWof the roots of the afila line was lessthan RWof the roots of the wild-type at the three higher ratesof N supply despite a greater accumulation of N in the rootsof the afila plants. Consequently, plant nitrogen productivity(growth rate per unit nitrogen) was lower for afila. Dry matterallocation was strongly influenced by nitrogen status, but nodifferences in shoot–root dry matter allocation were foundbetween wild-type and afila with the same plant N status. Theseresults imply that decreased leaf area as a result of the single-genemutation afila affects dry matter allocation, but only accordingto its effect on the nitrogen status. At low nitrogen (N) supply, it is well known that rye has ahigher biomass production than wheat. This study investigateswhether these species differences can be explained by differencesin dry matter and nitrogen partitioning, specific leaf area, specific root length and net assimilation rate, which determineboth N acquisition and carbon assimilation during vegetativegrowth. Winter rye (Secale cereale L.), wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) and triticale (X Triticosecale) were grown in solution cultureat relative addition rates (RN) of nitrate-N supply rangingfrom 0.03–0.18 d-1and at non-limiting N supply under controlledconditions. The relative growth rate (RW) was closely equalto RNin the range 0.03–0.15 d-1. The maximalRW at non-limitingnitrate nutrition was approx. 0.18 d-1. The biomass allocationto the roots showed a considerable plasticity but did not differbetween species. There were no interspecific differences ineither net assimilation rate or specific leaf area. Higher accumulationof N in the plant, despite the same relative growth rate atnon-limiting N supplies, suggests that rye has a greater abilityto accumulate reserves of nitrogen. Rye had a higher specificroot length over a wide range of sub-optimal N rates than wheat, especially at extreme N deficiency (RN=0.03–0.06 d-1).Triticale had a similar specific root length as that of wheatbut had the ability to accumulate N to the same amount as ryeunder conditions of free N access. It is concluded that thebetter adaptation of rye to low N availability compared to wheatis related to higher specific root length in rye. Additionally, the greater ability to accumulate nitrogen under conditionsof free N access for rye and triticale compared to wheat maybe useful for subsequent N utilization during plant growth. In general, species differences are explained by growth componentsresponsible for nitrogen acquisition rather than carbon assimilation.Copyright 1999 Annals of Botany Company Growth analysis, nitrogen, nitrogen productivity, partitioning, specific root length, Secale cereale L.,Triticum aestivum L., X Triticosecale, winter rye, winter wheat, winter triticale.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L., hybrid Cargill 147) seedlings, grown inaseptic conditions, were inoculated with three strains of Azospirillumlipoferum (Al op 33, Al iaa 320, and ATCC 29708) or culturedin different concentrations of indol-3-acetic acid (IAA) orgibberellin A3 (GA3). After 48 h, root length, root surfacearea, root dry weight, and shoot dry weight were measured inall treatments. Gibberellin content was evaluated in selectedroots of control and Azospirillum inoculated seedlings by gaschromatography-mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring withthe use of deuterated gibberellins as internal standards. Thethree strains of A. lipoferum, IAA (2 ng ml–1), and GA3(40 to 400 pg ml–1) significantly enhanced root growth.Improvement of root hair growth and density was obtained mainlywith A. lipoferum strain Al op 33 and GA3 40 pg ml–1.GA3 was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (byboth, full scan and selected ion monitoring) in a free acidfraction from roots of the seedlings inoculated with A. lipoferum. In the roots of the non inoculated seedlings GA3 was found afterhydrolysis of a fraction expected to contain glucosyl conjugates. The effects of a range of applied nitrate (NO3) concentrations(0–20 mol m3) on germination and emergence percentageof Triticum aestivum L. cv. Otane were examined at 30, 60, 90and 120 mm sowing depths. Germination percentage was not affectedby either sowing depth or applied NO3 concentration whereasemergence percentage decreased with increased sowing depth regardlessof applied NO3 concentration. Nitrate did not affectemergence percentage at 30 mm sowing depth, but at 60 to 120mm depth, emergence percentage decreased sharply with an increasedapplied NO3 concentration of 0 to 1·0 mol m–3then decreased only slightly with further increases in appliedNO3 of about 5·0 mol m–3. Root and shoot growth, NO3 accumulation and nitrate reductaseactivity (NRA) of plants supplied with 0, 1·0 and 1·0mol m–3 NO3 at a sowing depth of 60 mm were measuredprior to emergence. The coleoptile of all seedlings opened withinthe substrate. Prior to emergence from the substrate, shootextension growth was unaffected by additional NO3 butshoot fr. wt. and dry wt. were both greater at 1·0 and1·0 mol m–3 NO3 than with zero NO3.Root dry wt. was unaffected by NO3. Nitrate concentrationand NRA in root and shoot were always low without NO3.At 1·0 and 10 mol m3 NO3, NO3 accumulatedin the root and shoot to concentrations substantially greaterthan that applied and caused the induction of NRA. Regardlessof the applied NO3 concentration, seedlings which failedto emerge still had substantial seed reserves one month afterplanting. Coleoptile length was substantially less for seedlingswhich did not emerge than for seedlings which emerged, but wasnot affected by NO3. It is proposed that (a) decreasedemergence percentage with increased sowing depth was due tothe emergence of leaf I from the coleoptile within the substrateand (b) decreased emergence percentage with additional NO3was due to the increased expansion of leaf 1 within the substrateresulting in greater folding and damage of the leaf. The Relationship Between Growth and Oxygen Uptake in Hypoxic Rice Seedlings   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Atwell, B. J. and Green way, H. 1987. The relationship betweengrowth and oxygen uptake in hypoxic rice seedlings.—J.exp. Bot. 38: 454–465. Rice seedlings (Oryza saliva L.) were grown in the dark forup to 4 d in solutions containing various concentrations ofO2. Compared with seedlings grown at 0·250 mol O2 m–3,the dry weight of the growing seedling was 14% lower at 0·110mol O2 m–3 and 60% lower at 0 mol O2 m–3. Decreasesin fresh weight were similar but not identical to decreasesin dry weight, possibly because leaf growth was suppressed evenabove 0·110 mol O2 m–3. Oxygen deficiency inhibitedroot growth more severely than coleoptile growth. Coleoptiles from seedlings grown in aerated solution were exposedto an atmosphere of pure N2 for 30 min. Anoxia caused a declinein ATP content and energy charge, suggestive of decreased oxidativephosphorylation. It is not clear whether the decline in oxidativephosphorylation was solely responsible for impaired growth inhypoxia. In seedlings growing at O2 concentrations less than 0·110mol O2 m–3, significant amounts of ethanol were synthesized. The rate of O2 uptake decreased markedly below 0·06 molO2 m–3; this was presumably near the external O2 concentrationat which oxidative phosphorylation became limited by the supplyof O2. The stage of development of the seedlings appeared toinfluence O2 uptake, possibly through changes in conductanceof the tissue to O2. Uncouplers were used to confirm that thecritical O2 concentration was dependent on O2 diffusion ratherthan enzyme kinetics. Impaired growth above 0·110 molO2 m–3 may have been due to a decreased activity of oxygenasesof relatively low affinity for O2, which in turn altered cellmetabolism. A generalized equation is derived that relates total dry matterproduction to time from emergence for crops grown in the fieldwith adequate water and nutrients. It is: w+K1lnw+W0=K2t where w is the plant dry weight in t ha–1, t is time indays after emergence, K2 and K1 are constants and W0 equals–(w0+K1lnw0) where w0 is the value of w at the start ofthe growing period. The increases in the dry matter of 18 different types of vegetablecrop were measured at intervals during growth in the field. In every case the data fitted the equation very satisfactorilywith K1 set equal to 1 t ha–1. The fitted values of K2were similar for many crops; those of W0 varied considerablybut were always similar to the values calculated from the individualseed weight and the plant population. Good fits were also obtainedwhen time in days was replaced with cumulative evaporation froman open water surface. It is concluded that the growth-time curves of many differentvegetable crops can be described by the same simple equationand that the variation between curves can be largely attributedto differences in seed weight and plant population.  相似文献

Relative limitations of nitrogen (N) status on the processescontributing to photosynthetic rate (A) were investigated. Jackpine {Pinus banksiana Lamb.) seedlings from seeds grown in sandculture were supplied with four different N treatments for 6weeks, which resulted in a needle N content ranging from 50–85mmol m–2 (14–32 mg g–1 dry weight). Leaf gasexchange at varying CO2 levels was measured and limitationson A350 (A at ambient CO2 level) caused by finite, limitingcarboxylation efficiency (c.e.), maximum A (Amax)and stomatalconductance were estimated from an analysis of the responseof A to internal CO2 concentration. Although c.e. and Amax decreasedlinearly with the decline in needle N, the magnitudes of theirchanges relative to A350 differed. Amax varied with A350 andalways exceeded A350 by 37–38% c.e., however, declinedfaster than A350, as needle N level decreased. Consequently, relative limitation on A350 caused by inefficient Amax remainedconstant, but limitations caused by c.e. increased by 10–15%at low N levels. In contrast, the limitation by stomatal conductancedeclined initially, but remained stable when N content droppedbelow 75 mmol m–2. The results suggest: (1) a decreasein biochemical capacity, but not stomatal conductance, contributedto the reduction of A350 induced by N-deficiency in jack pineseedlings; and (2) the capacity of carboxylation appeared tobe impaired more than that of electron transport and/or photophosphorylationand its reduction may be the major reason for the reductionin A350. The prediction that very high seed yields of dry beans (Phaseolusvulgaris L.) would be produced by the delayed transplantingof large plants has been tested in a factorial experiment withfour dates of transplanting and eight plant populations. Therewere significant differences in yield between transplantingdates and between population densities, and there was a significantdate-density interaction. At low plant densities (up to about30 plants m–2) the three transplanted treatments yieldedless than the hand-sown controls, and late transplanting yieldedless than early. At the highest density the situation was reversed;all three transplanted treatments out-yielded the controls andlate transplanting tended to out-yield plants transplanted early. The biggest yield was 340 g seed m–2 from a transplantedcrop grown at 35 plants m–2. The data on yield fitted a modified rectangular hyperbola ofthe form where y is yield per unit area, p is the number of plants perunit area, t is the number of days between sowing and transplanting, and Bo, n, m, and p are arbitrary parameters. This equationaccounted for 91 per cent of the variation in yield with t andp. It is suggested that late transplanting had adverse effects, due to transplanting ‘shock’ and which were mostmarked at low plant densities; and beneficial effects, ascribableto an effect on plant ‘plasticity’, which were mostmarked at high plant densities. Possible physiological mechanismsof these effects are discussed. Phaseolus vulgaris, yield, density, transplanting  相似文献

Acclimation of fully developed leaves of Bischofia javanicaBlume to shadelight was examined. Seedlings were grown undersimulated daylight (1000 µmol m–2 s–1), thentransferred to a simulated shadelight (40 µmol m–2s–1). When a high-light leaf was transferred to low light, large negativenet photosynthetic rates (Pm) were recorded. This decrease wasrapid, but within 7 d the rate increased and became equal tothe low-light control leaf. These changes in photosynthesisdid not follow the pattern of changes in stomatal conductance(gs). Transfer to the low light resulted in a dramatic decreasein leaf weight per unit area (Lw), and most of the decreasesin Lw occurred within 3 d of transfer when the Pm of the transferredleaf was well below that of the low-light control leaf. There was a significant decrease in chlorophyll a in the transferredleaf without an appreciable change in chlorophyll b resultingin a large decrease in the chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b ratio.Leaf chlorophylls per unit area were higher in the transferredleaf than the low-light control leaf. Maximum photosyntheticrate in the transferred leaf was decreased by 40% compared tothat for the high-control leaf, but was almost at the same extenthigher than the low-light control leaf The results are discussedin the context of carbon gain capacity of its seedlings underlight-limiting forest understorey habitats. Mesophyll resistance to photosynthetic carboxylation (r'm) wasused as a criterion for leaf integrity. It was measured, at25 °C, in the light, before and after periods of high temperature(3 h at 38 °C) in the dark. During the high temperatureperiods, respiration (RD) of attached leaves of Xanthium strumariumwas suppressed from 27%-36% by either low [O2] (1.04% or 0.21%v.v.) or high [CO2] (840 µl 1–1) in the ambientair. Neither treatment affected rates of RD or photo-respirationduring the second period at 25 °C. There was no significant increase of r'm when RD was not suppressedduring the high temperature treatment. When RD was suppressedat high temperatures, r'm increased from about 3s cm–1before, to about 26 s cm–1 after the high temperaturetreatment. The increase depended upon the degree of suppression. It is concluded that increased RD at high temperature in Xanthiumleaves is partly the result of an increase of energy demandingmaintenance. The subsequent rate of carbon dioxide fixationis reduced when this increase of maintenance-induced respirationis inhibited.  相似文献

During the ripening stage of barley and rice, the sink activitywas defined as the dry matter increase per units sink size, leaf area and time, as follows: NAR = A.SinkW+NAR', where NAR is the net assimilation rate (g d.wt dm–2d–1);A is the sink activity [g d.wt g–1d.wt (ear) dm–2d–1]; Sink W is ear wt per plant at heading (g d.wt);and NAR' is net assimilation rate excluding the assimilate ofsink organ (g d.wt dm–2 d–1). Plant material with 16 combinations of mutually different sink(ear) and source (leaf) size were produced at heading for eachcrop: parts of each leaf and ear were removed to produce fourgrades in barley, and also a part of each leaf was removed producingfour grades for four rice varieties showing different ear size.NAR and NAR' were determined during 26 and 21 d in barley andrice after heading, respectively. Sink activity (A), representedas the assimilation rate induced by the sink organ, was estimatedfrom the relationship between SinkW and NAR using the previousequation. The sink activity was significantly higher in ricewith a value of 0–0.028 g d.wt g–1 d.wt (ear) dm–2d–1 vs. 0–0.0017 in barley, suggesting that therelative role of leaves for grain filling is considerably higherin rice than in barley. The sink activity obtained in the studymight be introduced into a model to predict the yields of barleyand rice. An Analysis of Growth of Oil Palm Seedlings in Full Daylight and in Shade   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
REES  A. R. 《Annals of botany》1963,27(2):325-337
Growth of seedling oil palms (Elaeis guineensis), in full daylightand under three levels of shade, was studied using growth analysistechniques. In full day-light, net assimilation rates (EA) betweeno.15 and 0.32 g./dm.2/week were obtained associated with lowleaf-area ratios (F) giving relative growth-rates (RW) rangingfromI I.8 to 3.2 per cent, per day. There were no indicationsof seasonal differences within the small range of values found. The plants take about 90 days to adapt to shade conditions becausethe mean plastochron is 24 days, and shading effects are beststudied on plants grown since germination under the shade treatments.Very different pictures of response to shade were obtained usingplants grown initially in full light followed by 90 days' shadebefore sampling compared with plants grown under shade sincegermination. In the latter, except at the lowest light levelused, I I.I per cent, of full day-light, there was very littleeffect of light on EA or Rw, although the F values decreasedas light increased. Extrapolation of the F values to the extinctionpoint gave values similar to those obtained in another experimenton the effect of a number of shade levels on F. The physiological and ecological implications of these findings, particularly the low growth-rates and shade tolerance, are discussed.  相似文献

CO2-exchange rates (CER) of the sixth and the flag leaves oftwo spring-wheat varieties, Kolibri and Famos, were comparedusing an open-circuit infrared gas analysing system. Measurementswere repeated every two weeks starting when leaf blades werefully expanded. Single plants were grown in a controlled environmenthaving a photopuiod of 15 h and a day/night temperature of 24/19°C(H), 18/13 °C (M), and 12/7 °C (L) respectively untilapprox. 2 weeks after anthesis and at 18/13 °C until maturity. The photosynthetic photon-flux density (PPFD) at the top ofthe plants was 500 µE m–2 sec–1. During themeasurements PPFD was gradually reduced from 2000 to 0 µEm–2 sec–1 whereas the temperature was maintainedat the respctive growth-temperatures during the light period. The CER of the sixth leaf declined fairly similarly for bothvarieties, except for Kolibri where a faster decline was observedduring the first two weeks after full leaf expansion. The CERof the flag leaf declined more slowly than that of the sixthleaf. With the flag leaf of Famos, the decline was nearly linear, whereas with Kolibri it was very slow during the first few weeksbut rapid as the leaves further senesced. This pattern becamemore pronounced as the growth temperature decreased. The declinein relation to leaf age was much smaller at low PPFD than athigh PPFD during the same period. At full leaf expansion Kolibrireached higher maximum CER than Famos except at H. As the PPFDwas reduced the difference became smaller and at very low PPFDsuch as 50 µE m–2 sec–1 was reversed for thesixth leaf. Under optimum growth conditions maximum values ofCER were greater than 50mg CO2 dm–2h–1 and PPFDfor light saturation was close to 2000 µE m–2 sec–1.A comparison between the actual CER and a fitted curve widelyused, PN=(a+b/l)–1–DR, showed that the goodnessof fit strongly depends on cultivar, treatment and leaf ageas well as on the number and the level of PPFD from which datafor calculations are taken. Lolium temulentum seedlings were grown on a nutrient mediumcontaining NH4NO2 at 0, 0·1, 0·5, 1·0 and4·3 mmoll–1 as the sole N source. Relative andabsolute extension rates, maximal leaf size, duration of extensiongrowth, rate of leaf appearance and plastochron index were determinedfrom the parameters of Richards functions fitted to lengthsof laminae measured at intervals after sowing. The final lengthof leaf I was relatively insensitive to N whereas mean relativeextension rate was increased and duration of growth decreasedwith increasing NH4NO2 concentration. Leaves 2 and 3 enlargedprogressively with N at concentrations up to 1·0 mmoll–1but were unresponsive thereafter. There was no significant correlationbetween final length and mean relative extension rate for leaves1 to 3. Leaves 4 to 6 continued to show increasing length beyond1·0 mmoll–1 N and final length was significantlycorrelated with mean relative extension rate. Increasing N increasedthe rate of leaf appearance by decreasing the duration of leafextension and plastochron. These results are discussed in relationto the control of leaf and N turnover. Seeds of two lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L., cv. Meikoninginand cv. Grand Rapids) were hermetically stored with constantmoisture contents ranging between 3.6 and 17.9 per cent (freshweight basis) at constant temperatures ranging between 5 and75 °C. The decline with time in percentage germination andpercentage normal seedlings was determined for each storagetreatment. The data were fitted to an equation which containsthe constants: K1, the probit of the initial percentage germinationor normal seedlings; KE, a species constant; CW, the constantof a logarithmic moisture term; CH, the constant of a lineartemperature term and CQ, the constant of a quadratic temperatureterm. Regression analysis of data from storage periods up to5.5 years at temperatures of 5–75 °C and seed moisturecontents of 3.6–13.6 per cent yielded the following values:KE= 8.218, CW=4.797±0.163, CH=0.0489±0.0050 andCQ=0.000365±0.000056. Although this equation consistentlyprovided a better fit, simplified equations, assuming eithera log-linear relationship between seed longevity and temperature,or a log-linear relationship between seed longevity and bothmoisture content and temperature, accounted for more than 94per cent of the variation at the restricted temperature rangeof 5–40 °C. Longevity of the same seed lots at sub-zero temperatures (–5,–10 and –20 °C) was studied in separate tests.Freezing damage, resulting in abnormal seedlings in the germinationtest, occurred at –20 °C when the moisture contentof the seeds exceeded 12 per cent. No decline in percentagenormal seedlings was observed after a storage period of 18 monthsor longer at –20 °C, provided the seed moisture contentdid not exceed 9.5 per cent. For seeds stored at –5 and–10 °C with 9.6–12.5 per cent moisture content, the observed rate of decline of percentage normal seedlingswas adequately predicted by the viability equation, using theabove values for the constants. This suggests that for low moisturecontents the viability equation can be applied to estimate longevityat sub-zero temperatures. Lolium temulentum plants were grown at 20 °C, under an 8-hdaylength, in a controlled-environment chamber, and the kineticsof leaf expansion were observed by measuring the movement ofan optical grid attached to the fourth leaf. The leaf emerged23–24 d after sowing and was fully expanded 9–10d later. Extension rate was maximal between the second and fifthdays after emergence and declined markedly thereafter. Duringthe rapid growth phase the rate of elongation exhibited a distinctdiurnal rhythm, fluctuating between 1.9 to 2.3 mm h–1in the light period, and 1.3 to 1.7 mm h–1 in the dark.A circadian oscillation with a period of about 27 h was observedin leaves elongating in continuous darkness. When plants weretransferred to 5 °C soon after emergence of the fourth leafthere was an immediate reduction in rate of growth to about22 per cent of the rate at 20 °C: the Q10 for the mean elongationrate in the range 20–5 °C was 3.7. When plants weretransferred from 20 to 2 °C at fourth leaf emergence, meanextension rate declined to less than 5 per cent, correspondingto a Q10 in the range 5–2 °C of more than 300. Furthermore, growth at 2 °C was confined almost entirely to the darkphase of the photoperiod cycle. The responsive tissue was shownto be a small area of expanding leafless than 1.5 cm above theshoot apex and the possible mechanisms underlying low temperatureeffects in this region are discussed. Dwarf french beans (Phaseolus vulgaris var. Canadian Wonder)were grown in chambers at 25?C with the roots aerated at 20per cent oxygen and tops variously maintained at: T1 O2 0.21;CO2 270?10–6: T2; O2 0.05, CO2, CO2 270?10–6: T3;O2 0.21; CO2 550?10–6. Experiment 1 (T1 and T2) lasted2 weeks: Experiment 2 (T1 T2 and T3) only one week. Hourly estimatesof CO2 uptake were made by gas analysis and weekly estimatesof fresh weight, dry matter in tops and roots, and leaf area,by sampling. Light intensity was 80 W m–2 of photosyntheticallyactive radiation. An attempt was made to explain the results in terms of a simplelight absorption model such that where dV/dt is the rate of CO2 uptake per plant, ßis the photosynthetic efficiency, I0 is the incident light intensity,f is the fraction of incident light absorbed by unit leaf layerand L is the leaf area index. The analysis showed that ß(T2)was at least double ß(T1), whilst f(T2) was smallerthan f(T1) at a given leaf area. The results also required thatthroughout the period of the experiment, fL(T1)=fL(T2) at anygiven time, i.e. the treatment with the larger leaf area (T2)has the smaller value of f, and therefore intercepts less lightper unit leaf area. This could be advantageous for plant growth, but requires further experiments. The photosynthetic rates per unit leaf are about 40 per centgreater in T2 than T1. Over the relatively short period of the experiment the resultsare adequately described by U=btn, where U is the accumulatedcarbon dioxide uptake, b is related to the photosynthetic efficiency(different for the differing treatments), and n is a constant(similar for all treatments). This relationship with time isbelieved to be a relationship with accumulated radiation, forthe light was constant throughout the experiments. Comparisons of carbon fixed (measured gas uptake) and dry matteraccumulation (sampling) show great scatter with an average valueof 0.43. The first week's results were generally smaller thanthis value and the second week's greater. Energy fixation as a fraction of photosynthetically active radiationon the ground area covered by the plants ranged from 3.5 to10 per cent. The results from treatment T3 were similar to T2 suggestingthat increasing CO2 concentration decreases the growth inhibitionat 21 per cent O2.  相似文献
