Digital images generated by medical imaging form the basis for radiological diagnosis and surgical planning. Despite the advent of the DICOM 3.0 standard for medical image communication, widespread application of the existing information is often limited by incompatibility of the data formatting used by different equipment generations, and the manufacturer-specific standards employed. An exchange interface based on magneto optical discs has been developed to retrieve and present medical image data regardless of the technological hardware and the specific formats used. Specially adapted routines to retrieve the data first had to be developed. A modular program structure was used to allow flexibility in the implementation of further routines and other exchange media. Over 20,000 CT and MRI images including header information obtained from different General Electric and Siemens scanners were extracted successfully from MO discs. The image data were used for follow up and surgical planning and were transferred to a PAC-server. The interface proved reliable and easy to use. Support for further proprietary formats is currently being developed. The present exchange interface permits reliable retrieval of digital images for diagnostic and surgical planning purposes, regardless of the hardware generation and manufacturer-specific formats.  相似文献

A method for measuring three-dimensional kinematics that incorporates the direct cross-registration of experimental kinematics with anatomic geometry from Computed Tomography (CT) data has been developed. Plexiglas registration blocks were attached to the bones of interest and the specimen was CT scanned. Computer models of the bone surface were developed from the CT image data. Determination of discrete kinematics was accomplished by digitizing three pre-selected contiguous surfaces of each registration block using a three-dimensional point digitization system. Cross-registration of bone surface models from the CT data was accomplished by identifying the registration block surfaces within the CT images. Kinematics measured during a biomechanical experiment were applied to the computer models of the bone surface. The overall accuracy of the method was shown to be at or below the accuracy of the digitization system used. For this experimental application, the accuracy was better than +/-0.1mm for position and 0.1 degrees for orientation for linkage digitization and better than +/-0.2mm and +/-0.2 degrees for CT digitization. Surface models of the radius and ulna were constructed from CT data, as an example application. Kinematics of the bones were measured for simulated forearm rotation. Screw-displacement axis analysis showed 0.1mm (proximal) translation of the radius (with respect to the ulna) from supination to neutral (85.2 degrees rotation) and 1.4mm (proximal) translation from neutral to pronation (65.3 degrees rotation). The motion of the radius with respect to the ulna was displayed using the surface models. This methodology is a useful tool for the measurement and application of rigid-body kinematics to computer models.  相似文献

PurposeTo study the feasibility of using an iterative reconstruction algorithm to improve previously reconstructed CT images which are judged to be non-diagnostic on clinical review. A novel rapidly converging, iterative algorithm (RSEMD) to reduce noise as compared with standard filtered back-projection algorithm has been developed.Materials and methodsThe RSEMD method was tested on in-silico, Catphan®500, and anthropomorphic 4D XCAT phantoms. The method was applied to noisy CT images previously reconstructed with FBP to determine improvements in SNR and CNR. To test the potential improvement in clinically relevant CT images, 4D XCAT phantom images were used to simulate a small, low contrast lesion placed in the liver.ResultsIn all of the phantom studies the images proved to have higher resolution and lower noise as compared with images reconstructed by conventional FBP. In general, the values of SNR and CNR reached a plateau at around 20 iterations with an improvement factor of about 1.5 for in noisy CT images. Improvements in lesion conspicuity after the application of RSEMD have also been demonstrated. The results obtained with the RSEMD method are in agreement with other iterative algorithms employed either in image space or with hybrid reconstruction algorithms.ConclusionsIn this proof of concept work, a rapidly converging, iterative deconvolution algorithm with a novel resolution subsets-based approach that operates on DICOM CT images has been demonstrated. The RSEMD method can be applied to sub-optimal routine-dose clinical CT images to improve image quality to potentially diagnostically acceptable levels.  相似文献

PurposeArm-artifact, a type of streak artifact frequently observed in computed tomography (CT) images obtained at arms-down positioning in polytrauma patients, is known to degrade image quality. This study aimed to develop a novel arm-artifact reduction algorithm (AAR) applied to projection data.MethodsA phantom resembling an adult abdomen with two arms was scanned using a 16-row CT scanner. The projection data were processed by AAR, and CT images were reconstructed. The artifact reduction for the same phantom was compared with that achieved by two latest iterative reconstruction (IR) techniques (IR1 and IR2) using a normalized artifact index (nAI) at two locations (ventral and dorsal side). Image blurring as a processing side effect was compared with IR2 of the model-based IR using a plastic needle phantom. Additionally, the projection data of two clinical cases were processed using AAR, and the image noise was evaluated.ResultsAAR and IR2 significantly reduced nAI by 87.5% and 74.0%, respectively at the ventral side and 84.2% and 69.6%, respectively, at the dorsal side compared with each filtered back projection (P < 0.01), whereas IR1 did not. The proposed algorithm mostly maintained the original spatial resolution, compared with IR2, which yielded apparent image blurring. The image noise in the clinical cases was also reduced significantly (P < 0.01).ConclusionsAAR was more effective and superior than the latest IR techniques and is expected to improve the image quality of polytrauma CT imaging with arms-down positioning.  相似文献

A new method for reconstruction of a three-dimensional surface from a sequence of high-resolution axial CT scans has been developed. This algorithm is realized as a set of computer programs that can operate on commercially available CT scanners or evaluation consoles. The program is both efficient and easy to implement. No operator intervention is required. The images produced simulate photographs of the skull. Frontal, lateral, oblique, bird's eye, worm's eye, and rear views are generated. As with photographs and conventional radiographs, each of these projections uniquely displays specific anatomic details. This method of osseous surface reconstruction is now routinely applied to all patients evaluated for major craniofacial reconstruction at our institution. The images are useful in defining aberrant anatomy, planning surgical procedures, and evaluating the results of such operations. This method replaces an inexact concept in the surgeon's imagination with a three-dimensional image of the craniofacial skeleton.  相似文献

The Brown-Roberts-Wells (BRW) computer tomography (CT) stereotactic guidance system has been modified to accommodate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A smaller head ring, which fits in standard MRI head coils, is constructed of a non-ferromagnetic aluminum ring that is split to prevent eddy currents and anodized to prevent MRI image distortion and resolution degradation. A new localizing device has been designed in a box configuration, which allows BRW stereotactic coordinates to be calculated from coronal and sagittal MRI images, in addition to axial images. The system was tested utilizing a phantom and T1- and T2-weighted images. Using 5-mm MRI scan slices, targets were localized accurately to a 5-mm cube in three combined planes. Optimized calibration of both low field strength (0.3 T) and high field strength (1.5 T) MRI systems is necessary to obtain thin slice (5 mm) images with acceptable image resolution. To date, 10 patients have had MRI stereotactic localization of brain lesions that were better defined by MRI than CT.  相似文献

The computer system for quantitative determination of musculoskeletal geometry from computer tomography (CT) images has been developed. The computer system processes series of CT images to obtain three-dimensional (3D) model of bony structures where the effective muscle fibres can be interactively defined. Although iterative reconstruction is widely applied in SPECT/PET, its introduction in clinical CT is quite recent, in the past the demand for extensive computer power and long image reconstruction times have stopped the diffusion of this technique. Recently Iterative Reconstruction in Image Space (IRIS) has been introduced on Siemens top CT scanners. This recon method works on image data area, reducing the time-consuming loops on raw data and noise removal is obtained in subsequent iterative steps with a smoothing process. We evaluated image noise, low contrast resolution, CT number linearity and accuracy, transverse and z-axis spatial resolution using some dedicated phantoms in single, dual source and cardiac mode. We reconstructed images with a traditional filtered back-projection algorithm and with IRIS. The iterative procedure preserves spatial resolution, CT number accuracy and linearity moreover decreases image noise. These preliminary results support the idea that dose reduction with preserved image quality is possible with IRIS, even if studies on patients are necessary to confirm these data.  相似文献

SUMMARY: GView is a Java application for viewing and examining prokaryotic genomes in a circular or linear context. It accepts standard sequence file formats and an optional style specification file to generate customizable, publication quality genome maps in bitmap and scalable vector graphics formats. GView features an interactive pan-and-zoom interface, a command-line interface for incorporation in genome analysis pipelines, and a public Application Programming Interface for incorporation in other Java applications. The integrity of bone-cement interface is essential for the long-term stability of cemented total joint arthroplasty. Although several studies have been carried out on bone-cement interface at continuum level, micromechanics of the interface has been studied only recently for tensile and shear loading cases. Fundamental studies of bone-cement interface at microstructural level are critical to the understanding of the failure processes of the interface, where multiple factors may contribute to failure. Here we present a micromechanical study of bone-cement interface under compression, which utilised in situ mechanical testing, time-lapsed microcomputed tomography (CT) and finite element (FE) modelling. Bovine trabecular bone was used to interdigitate with bone cement to obtain bone-cement interface samples, which were tested in step-wise compression using a custom-made loading stage within the μCT chamber. A finite element model was built from the CT images of one of the tested samples and loaded similarly as in the experiment. The simulated stress-displacement response fell within the range of the experimental responses, and the predicted local strain distribution correlated well with the failure pattern in the subject-specific experimental model. Damage evolution with load in the samples was monitored both experimentally and numerically. The results from the FE simulations further revealed the development of damage in the regions of interest during compression, which may be useful towards a micromechanics understanding of the failure processes at bone-cement interface.  相似文献

In the South African context, computed tomography (CT) has been used applied to individually prepared fossils and small rocks containing fossils, but has not been utilized on large breccia blocks as a means of discovering fossils, and particularly fossil hominins. Previous attempts at CT imaging of rocks from other South African sites for this purpose yielded disappointing results. For this study, 109 fossil- bearing rocks from the site of Malapa, South Africa were scanned with medical CT prior to manual preparation. The resultant images were assessed for accuracy of fossil identification and characterization against the standard of manual preparation. The accurate identification of fossils, including those of early hominins, that were not visible on the surface of individual blocks, is shown to be possible. The discovery of unexpected fossils is reduced, thus lowering the potential that fossils could be damaged through accidental encounter during routine preparation, or even entirely missed. This study should significantly change the way fossil discovery, recovery and preparation is done in the South African context and has potential for application in other palaeontological situations. Medical CT imaging is shown to be reliable, readily available, cost effective and accurate in finding fossils within matrix conglomerates. Improvements in CT equipment and in CT image quality are such that medical CT is now a viable imaging modality for this palaeontological application.  相似文献

High resolution strain measurements are of particular interest in load bearing tissues such as the intervertebral disc (IVD), permitting characterization of biomechanical conditions which could lead to injury and degenerative outcomes. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging produces excellent image contrast in cartilaginous tissues, allowing for image-based strain determination. Nonrigid registration (NRR) of MR images has previously demonstrated sub-voxel registration accuracy although its accuracy and precision in determining strain has not been evaluated. Accuracy and precision of NRR-derived strain measurements were evaluated using computer generated deformations applied to both computer generated images and MR images. Two different measures of registration similarity--the cost function which drives the registration algorithm--were compared: Mutual Information (MI) and Least Squares (LS). Strain error was evaluated with respect to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and strain heterogeneity. Additionally, the creep strain response from an in vitro loaded porcine IVD is shown and comparisons between similarity measures are presented. MI showed a decrease in strain precision with increasing CNR and decreasing SNR while LS was insensitive to both. Both similarity measures showed a decrease in strain precision with increasing strain heterogeneity. When computer generated heterogeneous strains were applied to MR images of the IVD, LS showed substantially lower strain error in comparison to MI. Results suggest that LS-driven NRR provides a more accurate image-based method for mapping large and heterogeneous strain fields and this method can be applied to studies of the IVD and, potentially, other soft tissues which present sufficient image texture.  相似文献

PurposeAnti-scatter grids suppress the scatter substantially thus improving image contrast in radiography. However, its active use in cone-beam CT for the purpose of improving contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) has not been successful mainly due to the increased noise related to Poisson statistics of photons. This paper proposes a sparse-view scanning approach to address the above issue.MethodCompared to the conventional cone-beam CT imaging framework, the proposed method reduces the number of projections and increases exposure in each projection to enhance image quality without an additional cost of radiation dose to patients. For image reconstruction from sparse-view data, an adaptive-steepest-descent projection-onto-convex-sets (ASD POCS) algorithm regularized by total-variation (TV) minimization was adopted. Contrast and CNR with various scattering conditions were evaluated in projection domain by a simulation study using GATE. Then we evaluated contrast, resolution, and image uniformity in CT image domain with Catphan phantom. A head phantom with soft-tissue structures was also employed for demonstrating a realistic application. A virtual grid-based estimation and reduction of scatter has also been implemented for comparison with the real anti-scatter grid.ResultsIn the projection domain evaluation, contrast and CNR enhancement was observed when using an anti-scatter grid compared to the virtual grid. In the CT image domain, the proposed method produced substantially higher contrast and CNR of the low-contrast structures with much improved image uniformity.ConclusionWe have shown that the proposed method can provide high-quality CBCT images particularly with an increased contrast of soft-tissue at a neutral dose for image-guidance.  相似文献

A greyscale-based fully automatic deformable image registration algorithm, based on an optical flow method together with geometric smoothing, is developed for dynamic lung modeling and tumor tracking. In our computational processing pipeline, the input data is a set of 4D CT images with 10 phases. The triangle mesh of the lung model is directly extracted from the more stable exhale phase (Phase 5). In addition, we represent the lung surface model in 3D volumetric format by applying a signed distance function and then generate tetrahedral meshes. Our registration algorithm works for both triangle and tetrahedral meshes. In CT images, the intensity value reflects the local tissue density. For each grid point, we calculate the displacement from the static image (Phase 5) to match with the moving image (other phases) by using merely intensity values of the CT images. The optical flow computation is followed by a regularization of the deformation field using geometric smoothing. Lung volume change and the maximum lung tissue movement are used to evaluate the accuracy of the application. Our testing results suggest that the application of deformable registration algorithm is an effective way for delineating and tracking tumor motion in image-guided radiotherapy.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: There are a large number of computational programs freely available to bioinformaticians via a client/server, web-based environment. However, the client interface to these tools (typically an html form page) cannot be customized from the client side as it is created by the service provider. The form page is usually generic enough to cater for a wide range of users. However, this implies that a user cannot set as 'default' advanced program parameters on the form or even customize the interface to his/her specific requirements or preferences. Currently, there is a lack of end-user interface environments that can be modified by the user when accessing computer programs available on a remote server running on an intranet or over the Internet. RESULTS: We have implemented a client/server system called ORBIT (Online Researcher's Bioinformatics Interface Tools) where individual clients can have interfaces created and customized to command-line-driven, server-side programs. Thus, Internet-based interfaces can be tailored to a user's specific bioinformatic needs. As interfaces are created on the client machine independent of the server, there can be different interfaces to the same server-side program to cater for different parameter settings. The interface customization is relatively quick (between 10 and 60 min) and all client interfaces are integrated into a single modular environment which will run on any computer platform supporting Java. The system has been developed to allow for a number of future enhancements and features. ORBIT represents an important advance in the way researchers gain access to bioinformatics tools on the Internet.  相似文献

A computing infrastructure (Sesame) has been designed to manage and link individual steps in complex projects. Sesame is being developed to support a large-scale structural proteomics pilot project. When complete, the system is expected to manage all steps from target selection to data-bank deposition and report writing. We report here on the design criteria of the Sesame system and on results demonstrating successful achievement of the basic goals of its architecture. The Sesame software package, which follows the client/server paradigm, consists of a framework, which supports secure interactions among the three tiers of the system (the client, server, and database tiers), and application modules that carry out specific tasks. The framework utilizes industry standards. The client tier is written in Java2 and can be accessed anywhere through the Internet. All the development on the server tier is also carried out in Java2 so as to accommodate a wide variety of computer platforms. The database tier employs a commercial database management system. Each Sesame application module consists of a simple user interface in the client tier, corresponding objects in the server tier, and relevant data stored in the centralized database. For security, access to stored data is controlled by access privileges. The system facilitates both local and remote collaborations. Because users interact with the system using Java Web Start or through a web browser, access is limited only by the availability of an Internet connection. We describe several Sesame modules that have been developed to the point where they are being utilized routinely to support steps involved in structural and functional proteomics. This software is available to parties interested in using it and assisting to guide its further development.Deceased, 30 August 2000  相似文献

目的:为解决融合图像视觉效果增强与量化信息损失之间的矛盾,本文提出一种基于非降采样的多孔小波(àtrous wavelet)分解的PET/CT图像融合方法,使得融合图像既有利于肿瘤诊断又能用于放疗靶区勾画和放射性定量分析。方法:对PET和CT图像分别进行多孔小波分解,以包含肿瘤目标的适当大小的感兴趣区域的清晰度为目标函数,采用Nelder-Mead算法对PET和CT图像高频分解系数之比进行优化获得最终的融合系数,使融合图像充分增加解剖学信息的同时又尽量保持PET图像原有的局部和整体灰度信息。结果:融合图像质量评价表明,本文方法能将有价值的PET功能信息与精确的CT解剖信息结合在一起,并克服传统小波融合损失图像量化信息的不足。结论:基于多孔小波融合的PET/CT图像既能用于肿瘤诊断,又能同时用于肿瘤学放射性计算和适形放疗计划制定等量化研究。  相似文献
