The general histology of the ovary and the cellular morphology of oöcytes in Henricia sanguinolenta (Muller) Bell is described.
The single nucleolus in the germinal vesicle begins to multiply when the oöcyte is 90 μm in diameter, either by fragmentation or by budding and it reaches several hundred in number in a full grown oöcyte of 1200 μm in diameter. At no time during the oöcyte growth is RNA synthesis in the nucleolus or any other parts of the oöcyte detected by autoradiographic techniques. However, follicle cells and coelomocytes in the ovary are actively synthesizing RNA during this period.

There are two ovaries in each arm and each ovary bears a single oviduct which opens orally at the interradial angle. The ovarian wall consists of three layers: mesothelium, muscular-connective tissue layer and germinal epithelium. The haemal space between the germinal epithelium and muscular-connective tissue layer is filled with a PAS positive fluid. It is suggested that this space may provide storage and transportation of nutrient to the germ cells.
The oögonium, situated along the germinal epithelium, is distinguished from the surrounding follicle cells by its clear cytoplasm and large nucleus with a single nucleolus. It measures 10 to 15 μ in diameter.
The development of primary oöcytes is divided into premeiotic, growth and germinal vesicle migration stages. The distribution of mitochondria seems to indicate the existence of a definite polarity in the young oöcytes; but this soon disappears at the beginning of vitellogenesis. Morphological evidence seems to suggest that some of the yolk granules may be synthesized first in follicle cells and then transferred into the oöcyte. Histochemical tests indicate that the yolk platelet is a carbohydrate-protein-lipid complex.
The first meiotic division occurs six hours after sperm penetration and the second meiotic division follows two hours later.
Monthly measurement of the oöcyte throughout a year indicates a well-defined annual spawning cycle; however, the growth of an oöcyte from an oögonium to a mature oöcyte requires about two years.  相似文献

Increases in DNA content caused by endoreduplication are widely observed in the metabolically active tissues of plants and animals. During egg production, insect females synthesize very large amounts of vitellogenin in their fat bodies, and female fat bodies of some insects become polyploid to accelerate vitellogenin production. Social insects have developed reproductive division of labor, wherein queens lay most of the eggs while other individuals have reduced fertility and undertake tasks required for maintaining the colony. Therefore, only queens are engaged in vitellogenin synthesis for egg production in social insects. Here, we show that termite queens have disproportionately more DNA in their fat body cells. Our DNA content analysis using flow cytometry demonstrated that more cells contained 4C‐DNA than 2C‐DNA in the fat bodies of Reticulitermes speratus queens. This high level of endoreduplication was not found in the fat body cells of other castes. This caste‐dependent doubling of DNA content in fat body cells suggests that termites exploit endoreduplication to boost egg production, in conjunction with the development of reproductive division of labor. This study highlights nuclear polyploidization as an adaptive strategy in social insects.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. After emergence, the follicles of A. aegypti double in length and the oöcytes may deposit a small amount of yolk, but within 2 days growth is arrested. Renewed growth and vitellogenesis, as well as the number of eggs finally produced, depends on the quantity of blood ingested. All females, given either a small (1 μl) or large (4 μl) meal of rat blood by enema, began yolk deposition in a nearly equal number of oöcytes, and each oöcyte had about the same amount of yolk 8 h later. Within 48 h, females fed 4 μl had each produced more than 100 eggs, whereas females fed 1 μl either had continued yolk deposition in some oöcytes, while most degenerated, or had all re-entered oögenic arrest. Consequently, 48 h after the 1 μl meal, a female had either c. 50 or 0 eggs. Even by 14 h after a 1-μl meal, females were either committed to re-enter oögenic arrest or to complete maturation of some oöcytes and resorb the yolk of others. This was shown by removing and examining one ovary 14 h after a blood meal and then giving a second blood meal. The second meal stimulated meal maturation in the remaining ovary, but only in those females whose oöcytes had been in oögenic arrest when the first ovary was examined; the second meal had no effect on females whose first ovary had contained both vitellogenic and degenerating oöcytes. Oösorption was not reversed by a second blood meal. Our results do not support the hypothesis that the female 'evaluates' the ingested meal and begins vitellogenesis in an 'appropriate' number of oöcytes. The results demonstrate that the ovary is an unreliable indicator of the frequency of blood-feeding, when females take a small meal.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Eimeria carolinensis n.sp. (Sporozoa) is described from oöcysts in the feces of the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque) taken in the vicinity of Durham, North Carolina. The oöcysts are ellipsoidal to elongate ellipsoidal, 14–19.5 × 10–13 μ, mean of 17.6 × 11.3 μ. Micropyle absent. Oöcyst wall composed of 2 layers. A refractile granule present but no oöcyst residuum. Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) mainly occur in elderly individuals in Western countries. However, MDS is commonly found in young individuals (<60 years) in Asia. The reason for the high incidence in younger individuals is still unclear, and the differences in disease features between young and elderly patients with MDS have been not well recognized. To explore these issues, in this study, we analyzed the clinical and experimental characteristics of MDS in the patients younger and older than 60 years old and characterized the potential age-associated differences. The results showed that over half of the patients with MDS (61.9%) were younger than 60 years old upon the first diagnosis. The younger patients were more likely to be female, who have lower risk and less advanced MDS. The occurrence of trisomy 8 and bone marrow failure were more frequent in the younger patients than the older ones. The marrow CD34+ cells in the younger patients showed lower proliferation and higher apoptosis in comparison with that in the older ones. Obvious amplification of T cells and low CFU formation could be found in the younger patients. CFU formation was significantly increased in the younger patients after the removal of activated T cells. In addition, the younger patients had a lower frequency of p15INK4B methylation, longer survival expectancy and less AML transformation. In summary, the younger patients with MDS in China may show more benign disease features than the older ones. Enhanced immunological response may be involved in the pathogenesis of MDS in the patients younger than 60 years.  相似文献

系统测定了天蚕Antheraea yamamai吐丝结茧至成虫期脂肪体、血淋巴和卵巢中卵黄蛋白和可溶性蛋白总含量的动态变化。结果表明,脂肪体是卵黄原蛋白(Vg)合成场所,Vg合成始于吐丝结茧后第4天;脂肪体、血淋巴中Vg滴度在吐丝结茧后第4天开始上升,化蛹后第6天或第8天达高峰,成虫羽化第1天则明显下降。卵巢对Vg摄取始于化蛹第1天,此后随蛹日龄逐渐上升,并渐趋平稳。同一卵巢管中卵黄蛋白(Vt)含量自顶端至基端随卵室增大而逐渐升高,不同日龄蛹中相应序号卵室的Vt含量以日龄大者为高;卵室中Vt含量与卵室体积大小呈正线性关系。电镜观察表明,Vg被卵母细胞摄入后以卵黄体形式存在,不同发育阶段卵巢中卵母细胞内卵黄体大小不同,以早期者为小;同一卵巢管中不同卵母细胞内卵黄体以顶端为小,基端明显增大,且卵黄体呈网状。  相似文献

Many insects experience a decrease in reproductive output when parasitised. We are investigating mechanisms underlying this fecundity reduction using the rat tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta infection of Tenebrio molitor beetles. These include an increase in the resorption of developing ovarian follicles and a decrease in fat body synthesis of vitellogenin. The latter is the direct effect of a molecule produced by the parasite. Here we report a study to determine whether vitellogenin synthesis and follicle resorption are the result of parasite-induced apoptosis in the respective tissues and whether the parasite molecule acts directly on the fat body by inducing apoptosis. In vivo, the number of fat body cell nuclei with chromatin condensation are significantly elevated in parasitised females at all days examined and peaked at day 7 post-infection. A TUNEL assay to detect DNA fragmentation confirmed these observations of apoptosis. However, when fat body from uninfected females was co-cultured with live metacestodes they did not cause cells to die by apoptosis, showing that the induction signal does not come directly from the parasite. The follicle resorption observed in the ovaries of infected beetles was not associated with apoptosis of the epithelial cells. The possibility of several mechanisms underlying fecundity reduction is discussed.  相似文献

The present study compares gonad structure and oogenesis in 30 species of cardinal fish (Apogonidae) from the Indo-Pacific region. In all of the species studied the ovaries are bilobed, with each lobe possessing ovigerous lamellae whose numbers and dimensions increase concomitantly with growth of the fish and reproductive stage, and correlate with the total dimensions of the particular species. In species of the genus Siphamia, the ovarian lobes are associated with a fat body that is not found in species of the other genera studied. Some of the species studied (Siphamia spp.; Archamia spp.) demonstrate group-synchronized maturation of eggs, possibly with only one spawn per reproduction season. However, most of the Apogon spp., and other genera, have unsynchronized cycles, a characteristic of multiple spawners. The various stages of previtellogenic and vitellogenic development are similar in the different species, but differ in timing and dimensions of the oocytes around which the morphogenesis of the egg envelope (chorion) and follicle begins. Differentiation of the egg envelope and follicle cells parallels the vitellogenic stages of egg development. The number of eggs was found to correlate positively with the length of the body and ovary of the fish, whereas egg diameter was found to correlate negatively with body length. The surface of the egg envelope bears ridges that form patterns of various types, whose structures and dimensions seem to be species-specific, and which in most species converge upon the single micropyle on the animal pole. The exposed ridge mazes include a special fibrous web that anchors in the micropyle. The production and importance of these ridges, as well as the correlations between egg numbers per spawn, egg dimensions, and the oral dimensions of the paternal male, are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Females of the subsocial woodroach Cryptocercus punctulatus Scudder generally have a single oviposition period during which they produce one to four oöthecae. Monogamous pairs and their recently deposited oöthecae were collected in the field, and measured, weighed and analysed for nitrogen in the laboratory. Females put 9.8 ± 2.4% (mean ± SD) of their dry weight and 11.6 ±0.5% of their body nitrogen into oöthecae. The total nitrogen and dry weight of the brood were positively related to the post-oviposition total nitrogen and dry weight of the mother. A female's investment, on a per nymph basis, averaged 0.06% of her post-oviposition dry weight. Females may be able to recover up to 58.7% of the nitrogen invested into a brood by consuming the egg cases after hatch. Overall, there was little variation in the width of head capsules of adults in this species, and this parameter was not significantly different between the sexes. Females were heavier than males (dry weight) (P = 0.06). Within pairs, the weights and nitrogen contents of males and females were positively correlated, probably because they feed together in the same log for nearly a year prior to reproduction.  相似文献

The annual cycle in body weight of pouched mice ( Saccostomus campestris ) was examined among 104 specimens which were collected throughout the year in the Transvaal province of South Africa. Each specimen was assigned to one of five age classes using toothwear characteristics although none of them belonged to the youngest age class. There was no significant effect of sex on body weight but older individuals were significantly heavier than younger ones. Pooled data from both sexes displayed seasonal variation in body weight with significantly heavier animals in the wet season (December-March) than during the dry season (June-September). However, there was no significant difference between the age structure of the population at these times. Instead, pouched mice in the two younger age classes were significantly lighter in the dry season compared to the wet season, while older individuals maintained a relatively constant body weight throughout the year. These results suggest that the annual cycle in body weight of S. campestris is caused by a reduction in body weight of young animals which lose weight in winter as an adaptation to limit their energy requirements when food availability declines.  相似文献

Adipokinetic hormones (AKHs) mobilise lipids, carbohydrates and/or proline from insect fat body stores. In addition, AKHs inhibit lipid and protein synthesis in the fat body. In the current study, 100 pmol homologous Grybi-AKH was injected twice daily into adult female crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus, starting on the day of adult emergence. The effects of the injected AKH on the formation of energy reserves in the fat body and on egg production were measured on day 4 after adult emergence. In comparison to water-injected control animals, lipid and protein content in the fat body of the AKH-injected crickets was significantly reduced, suggesting an inhibitory effect of AKH on the formation of lipid reserves and protein stores. The content of glycogen and free carbohydrate in the fat body was significantly higher in the AKH-injected animals. The most pronounced effect of the AKH-injections was a significant reduction of ovary mass, due to the retarded maturation of the oocytes and the significantly lower number of terminal oocytes produced. It is concluded that AKH inhibits egg production indirectly by interference with the formation of energy stores in the fat body that are mobilised to fuel egg production.  相似文献

Transovarial transmission of a yeast-like symbiote (YLS) in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal, was observed with light and electron microscopy. Light micrographs showed that there was no YLS in testes and spermathecae of the mated females, indicating that sperm is not involved in the transovarial transmission of the symbiote. Both light and electron micrographs showed the processes of YLS transmission from fat body to the oocyte. In females, the symbiotes in mycetocytes moved out of the syncytium, which is formed from a layer of fat body cells, by exocytosis, and released into hemocoel. Then, the free YLS in hemolymph approached to the ovarioles near pedicel and were enclosed by follicle cells. They entered the follicle cells around the primary oocyte by endocytosis at epithelial plug of the ovariole. The YLS aggregated at the posterior end of the mature egg after entering, and finally formed a symbiote ball.  相似文献

Endoreduplication or nuclear genome replication without cell division is widely observed in the metabolically active tissues of plants and animals. The fat body cells of adult female insects produce abundant yolk proteins and become polyploid, which is assumed to accelerate egg production. Recently, it was reported that in termites, endopolyploidy in the fat body occurs only in queens but not in the other females; however, the relationship between the fecundity and ploidy level in the fat body remains unclear. Termite queens exhibit a huge variation in their egg‐producing capacity among different species; queens in the species with a foraging lifestyle, in which workers leave the nest to forage outside, are much more fecund than those in the species living in a single piece of wood. In this study, we conducted ploidy analyses on three foragings and three wood‐dwelling termites via flow cytometry. In all the species, the fat body of queens contained significantly more polyploid cells than that of other nonreproductive females, considering their body size effect. However, the male fat body, which is not involved in yolk production, did not show consistency in polyploid cell numbers among the species studied. Moreover, highly fecund queens in foraging termites exhibit higher levels of endopolyploidy in their fat body than those with less fecundity in wood‐dwelling termites. These results suggest that endopolyploidy in the fat body of termite queens can boost their egg production, and the level of endopolyploidy in their fat body is linked to their fecundity. Our study provides a novel insight into the evolutionary relationship between endoreduplication and caste specialization in social insects.  相似文献

In males that compete aggressively for females, size and agemay determine which males obtain access to these females. Inthe present study, we use the crab spider, Misumena vatia, aspecies with males that do not grow after becoming sexuallymature adults, to test the hypothesis that age affects the successof males competing for access to females. M. vatia is an excellentspecies to test this hypothesis because it is possible to disentangleage from size, characters that typically vary together in thespecies usually tested. We staged encounters between similar-sizedolder and younger adult male M. vatia in the presence of a femaleto determine the role of age in male access to females. Encountersbetween the males occurred during 63.3% of these pairings. Youngermales won significantly more (70.2%) of the encounters thandid older ones, but did not initiate significantly more encountersthan did older ones (62.5%). Although older males won only 29.8%of these encounters, they initiated significantly more (76.5%)of them than predicted by chance. This design also allowed usto test Parker's hypothesis that older individuals should exhibita higher level of aggression than younger ones. However, attacksby younger males were most likely to include extensive bodilycontact, whereas attacks by older males involved significantlyless contact. These results counter the frequent assertion thatolder individuals usually prevail over younger ones in contestsfor access to females, and that older males are more likelyto engage in highly overt aggression than are younger ones.Aging may decrease reproductive opportunities and success ratesof male M. vatia, affecting as many as nearly one-fourth oftheir encounters.  相似文献

The effect of maternal age and hostHeliothis virescens (F.) deprivation on egg production and allocation byMicroplitis croceipes (Cresson) was determined in the laboratory on 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 6.0, 9.0, and 12.0 days old parasitoids. In host-deprived parasitoids, newly-emerged (0.5-day old) females produced significantly fewer eggs than older ones; egg production peaked 3 to 6 days after emergence and declined thereafter. However, the number of eggs found in undeprived parasitoids at various ages suggested a cyclical pattern of egg production. The rate of parasitization by host-deprivedM. croceipes was higher in 1.0 to 6.0 days old than in newly-emerged or older females and was correlated strongly with egg production (r=0.93). The first observation on premature larval hatching inM. croceipes was documented.   相似文献

Genes that are required for cell proliferation control in Drosophila imaginal discs were tested for function in the female germ-line and follicle cells. Chimeras and mosaics were produced in which developing oocytes and nurse cells were mutant at one of five imaginal disc overgrowth loci (fat, lgd, lgl, c43 and dco) while the enveloping follicle cells were normal. The chimeras were produced by transplantation of pole cells and the mosaics were produced by X-ray-induced mitotic recombination using the dominant female-sterile technique. The results show that each of the genes tested plays an essential role in the development or function of the female germ line. The fat, lgl and c43 homozygous germ-line clones fail to produce eggs, indicating a germ-line requirement for the corresponding genes. Perdurance of the fat+ gene product in mitotic recombination clones allows the formation of a few infertile eggs from fat homozygous germ-line cells. The lgd homozygous germ-line clones give rise to a few eggs with abnormal chorionic appendages, a defect thought to result from defective cell communication between the mutant germ-line and the nonmutant follicle cells. One allele of dco (dcole88) prevents egg development when homozygous in the germ line, whereas the dco18 allele has no effect on germ-line development. Fs(2)Ugra, a recently described follicle cell-dependent dominant female-sterile mutation, allowed the analysis of egg primordia in which fat, lgd or lgl homozygous mutant follicle cells surrounded normal oocytes. The results show that the fat and lgd genes are not required for follicle cell functions, while absence of lgl function in follicles prevents egg development.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The role of dietary nitrogen in reproductive development was investigated in the female boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis (Boh.)(Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Artificial diets were employed containing 1.7%, 2.6% and 4.0% N. Each diet was labelled with a 14C-amino acid mixture and standardized relative to cpm and N per mg of diet dry weight. Egg production, diet consumption, nitrogen consumption and nitrogen utilization were measured by recovering the cpm in the faeces, ovaries plus eggs and the carcass.
Females given the 4% N diet initiated oviposition on day 4 with maximum egg production of 11 eggs/day/female occurring on day 6. Females on the 2.6% N diet also initiated oviposition on day 4, but the time necessary to reach maximum egg production was extended. Egg production by these females eventually equalled the total production of the group on the 4% N diet. This was achieved by consuming more diet per female and dedicating a higher percentage of the absorbed diet to egg formation. With the 1.7% N diet, females showed both a delay and a decrease in total egg production because of reduced feeding and a reduced commitment of consumed nutrients to oöcyte maturation.
Switching dietary nitrogen concentrations after the initiation of oviposition resulted in changes in consumption and reproductive allocation within 48 h.  相似文献

The current study assessed sympathetic neuronal and vasomotor responses, total body oxygen consumption, and sensory thermal perception to identify thermoregulatory differences in younger and older human subjects during core cooling. Cold fluid (40 ml/kg, 4 degrees C) was given intravenously over 30 min to decrease core temperature (Tc) in eight younger (age 18-23) and eight older (age 55-71) individuals. Compared with younger subjects, the older subjects had significantly lower Tc thresholds for vasoconstriction (35.5 +/- 0.3 vs. 36.2 +/- 0.2 degrees C, P = 0.03), heat production (35.2 +/- 0.4 vs. 35.9 +/- 0.1 degrees C, P = 0.04), and plasma norepinephrine (NE) responses (35.0 vs. 36.0 degrees C, P < 0.05). Despite a lower Tc nadir during cooling, the maximum intensities of the vasoconstriction (P = 0.03) and heat production (P = 0.006) responses were less in the older compared with the younger subjects, whereas subjective thermal comfort scores were similar. Plasma NE concentrations increased fourfold in the younger but only twofold in the older subjects at maximal Tc cooling. The vasomotor response for a given change in plasma NE concentration was decreased in the older group (P = 0.01). In summary, aging is associated with 1) a decreased Tc threshold and maximum response intensity for vasoconstriction, total body oxygen consumption, and NE release, 2) decreased vasomotor responsiveness to NE, and 3) decreased subjective sensory thermal perception.  相似文献
