Summary The surface structure of eggs of Notothenia neglecta, Nototheniops larseni, Nototheniops nudifrons (Nototheniidae), Champsocephalus gunnari and Chaenocephalus aceratus (Channichthyidae), collected near Elephant Island (Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean) and of Notothenia rossii rossii (Nototheniidae) from Kerguelen waters (Indian sector of the Southern Ocean) was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Eggs of N. larseni differed from the other species by containing a micropyle with two micropyle pits. External morphological characteristics of the egg envelope such as the ultrastructure of the zona radiata, its interpore distances and the diameter of the micropyle were species-specific and could aid in the identification of fish eggs collected from the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

The micropyles and their surrounding structures of pelagic fish eggs of nine species were examined and compared using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The surface of the egg membrane possesses uniformly distributed pores. However,Lateolabrax japonicus possesses a number of small knobs. The region of the micropyle of fish eggs examined is characterized by a circular elevation in which the pores are larger than those on the other parts of the egg membrane. In contrast,Kareius bicoloratus egg has no elevation and possesses uniform pores to the edge of the micropylar canal. The funnel-like structure is seen in the opening of the micropyle inSardinops melanostictus, Saurida elongata, Sillago japonica, Parapristipoma trilineatum, Hypodytes rubripinnis andK. bicoloratus. These specific features of the micropyle may be used for the identification of pelagic eggs.  相似文献

Starry flounder Platichthys stellatus, spotted halibut Verasper variegates, turbot Scophthalmus maximus, and Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus are four commercially cultivated multiple spawning flounders that spawn pelagic eggs. Through appropriate light and scanning electron microscope processing, the shape and surface structures (such as micropyle, pores, pore density, and paten) of unfertilized mature and fertilized developing eggs of the four species were observed and measured. First, individual or intraspecific comparisons of the surface structures of eggs at different developmental stages were made. Second, interspecific differences among the four species at the same developmental stage of unfertilized mature eggs were statistically computed and analyzed through one-way analysis of variance and hierarchical cluster analysis. Eggs of the same species collected at different stages of development tend to be different in morphology. Smoothing of the convoluted egg envelope surface and closure of the micropyle to serve as a final step of the polyspermy-preventing reaction are common after fertilization. Based on detailed morphology of micropyle of just-mature fertilizable eggs, turbot, starry flounder, and Japanese flounder each have a micropyle with a long canal but no distinct micropylar vestibule, type III of Riehl and Götting (Arch Hydrobiol 74:393–402, 1974). In contrast, spotted halibut has a micropyle with a distinct flat micropylar vestibule and a long canal, type II. Envelope surface microstructures, especially those in the micropyle region, are useful characters for egg identification among the four species. Cluster analysis using selected egg characters indicated the highest similarity between turbot and Japanese flounder and that starry flounder is obviously more similar to turbot and Japanese flounder than to spotted halibut.  相似文献

The envelope surface ultrastructure and specific gravity of artificially fertilized eggs of the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus were examined. The unfertilized, demersal and slightly adhesive eggs of G. macrocephalus were almost spherical and had no oil globules. Wrinkled envelope surface with elaborated hexagonal reticulated patterns and type I micropyle were observed under a scanning electron microscope. The adhesiveness of the eggs was lost at the blastodermal‐cap stage after fertilization. The micropylar canal was sealed by secretion of the perivitelline fluid, and the entire surface became rough. Numerous bacilli were deposited at the micropyle and the outer envelope surface at the late germ‐ring stage and at the embryo five‐eighths around the yolk stage. The micropyle was completely deformed at the embryo seven‐eighths around the yolk stage. The specific gravity of the fertilized G. macrocephalus eggs ranged from c. 1·0316 to 1·0454. These values, however, sharply decreased towards the end stages of egg development to produce pelagic larvae. The ultrastructural changes in the micropyle and envelope surface of the G. macrocephalus eggs protected the embryo from microorganism infections and mechanical stress during the long incubation period. The adhesiveness and specific gravity of the eggs influenced their dispersion potential.  相似文献

The fish egg is surrounded by a thick envelope called the chorion. The fertilizing spermatozoon enters the egg through a canal-like structure in the chorion, the micropyle. Examination of micropyle at fertilization is difficult if eggs are large and have no distinct landmarks surrounding the micropyle, or if they are positively buoyant in water. Eggs of many commercially important fishes (e.g., flounder, sea bream and eel) are buoyant in water or only slightly adhere to solid objects (e.g., sands, rock and water plants), which makes observation of spermatozoa at fertilization difficult. Here, we report that such eggs can be firmly attached to plastic and glass dishes that have been previously coated with poly-L-lysine. These adhering eggs can be fertilized and develop normally on the dishes. Observations of micropyles of three fish species, before and after sperm entry are presented.  相似文献

Females of the common frog, Rana temporaria, spawn synchronously at communal breeding sites, forming a communal egg mass of individual spawn clumps. A total of four spawning sites were studied. In the centre of the communal egg mass, daily maximum temperature was higher and minimum temperature lower than further out. Spawn clumps in the centre of the communal egg mass developed faster than single spawn clumps. In the centre of the egg masses, some spawn clumps suffered almost total egg mortality. This was probably the consequence of a cold spell with sub‐zero temperatures in combination with a tendency for low minimum temperatures in the centre. In a laboratory study, worm leeches, Erpobdella spp., fed readily on eggs of common frog, while horse leeches, Haemopis sanguisuga, hardly ate any eggs. At the spawning sites, most worm leeches were found in single spawn clumps, far from the communal egg mass. Females which spawned late, when most of the spawning was over, preferred to spawn in the centre of the communal egg mass. This suggests that there is a net advantage for eggs in spawn clumps laid in the centre.  相似文献

The cytology of the vitellogenic stages in the development of the oocyte of Drosophila melanogaster has been studied using whole mounts and sections of plastic-embedded ovaries and single egg chambers for light microscopy and cytochemistry. The migrations, changes in morphology, and synthetic products of the follicle cells are described as a function of developmental stage. The follicle cells synthesize the egg coverings, the vitelline and chorionic membranes, and elaborate the micropyle and dorsal chorionic appendages. The changing structure of the nurse cell nucleus and changes in organelle composition of its cytoplasm are described. The nurse cells synthesize ribosomes, lipid droplets, and mitochondria. These components pass through the ring canal system into the oocyte, which increases in volume some 200,000 times during its 78 hours of development.  相似文献

The fine structure of the egg envelope and micropyle was studied in unfertilized and developing eggs of the flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck & Schlegel), the Alaska pollack Theragra chalcogramma (Pallas), the Japanese tilefish Branchiostegus japonicus (Houttuyn) and the porgy Pagrus major (Temminck & Schlegel). The outer envelope surface of the unfertilized egg was wrinkled, while the inner surface was folded. The micropyle of the unfertilized egg consisted of a shallow vestibule and a distinct canal. The micropylar region of the inner surface of the envelope had a conical- or bowl-shaped protrusion. In developing eggs, the thickness of the envelope decreased and showed smooth outer and inner surfaces which indicated that it had been stretched tangentially at the time of the perivitelline space formation. The lumen of the micropylar canal was invariably occupied with envelope material. We postulate that the blockage of the micropylar canal is a result of the stretching of the envelope. The closure of the micropyle inhibits sperm and external pathogens from penetrating into the perivitelline space and seems to be involved in both the permanent prevention of polyspermy and the protection of the developing embryo from bacterial infection.  相似文献

The endomembranous system of Serrasalmus spilopleura oocyte secondary growth was analysed using structural and ultrastructural cytochemical techniques. In vitellogenic oocytes, the endoplasmic reticulum components, the nuclear envelope intermembranous space, some Golgi dictiossomes, lysosomes, yolk granules, regions of the egg envelope and sites of the follicle cells react to acid phosphatase detection (AcPase). The cortical alveoli, some heterogeneous cytoplasmic structures, regions of the egg envelope, and sites of the follicle cells are strongly contrasted by osmium tetroxide and zinc iodide impregnation (ZIO). The endoplasmic reticulum components, some vesicles, and sites of the follicle cells also react to osmium tetroxide and potassium iodide impregnation (KI). The biosynthetic pathway of lysosomal proteins, such as acid phosphatase, required for vitellogenesis, involves the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, vesicles with inactive hydrolytic enzymes, and, finally, lysosomes. In S. spilopleura oocytes at secondary growth, the endomembranous system takes part in the production of the enzymes needed for vitellogenesis, and in the metabolism of yolk exogenous components (AcPase detection). The endomembranous system compartments also show reduction capacity (KI reaction) and are involved in the metabolism of proteins rich in SH‐groups (ZIO reaction).  相似文献

Embryos of the viviparous poeciliid fish, Heterandria formosa, develop to term in the ovarian follicle where they undergo a 3,900% increase in embryonic dry weight. Maternal-embryonic nutrient transfer occurs across a follicular placenta that is formed by close apposition of the embryonic surface (i.e., the entire body surface during early gestation and the pericardial amnionserosa during mid-late gestation) to the follicular epithelium. To complement our recent study of the embryonic component of the follicular placenta, we now describe the development and fine structure of the maternal component of the follicular placenta. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the ultrastructure of the egg envelope and the follicular epithelium that invests vitellogenic oocytes is typical of that described for teleosts. The egg envelope is a dense matrix, penetrated by microvilli of the oocyte. The follicular epithelium consists of a single layer of cuboidal cells that lack apical microvilli, basal surface specializations, and junctional complexes. Follicle cells investing the youngest embryonic stage examined (Tavolga's and Rugh's stage 5–7 for Xiphophorus maculatus) also lack apical microvilli and basal specializations, but possess junctional complexes. In contrast, follicle cells that invest embryos at stage 10 and later display ultrastructural features characteristic of transporting epithelial cells. Apical microvilli and surface invaginations are present. The basal surface is extensively folded. Apical and basal coated pits are present. The cytoplasm contains a rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complexes, and dense staining vesicles that appear to be lysosomes. The presence of numerous apically located electron-lucent vesicles that appear to be derived from the apical surface further suggests that these follicle cells may absorb and process follicular fluid. The egg envelope, which remains intact throughout gestation and lacks perforations, becomes progressively thinner and less dense as gestation proceeds. We postulate that these ultrastructural features, which are not present in the follicles of the lecithotrophic poeciliid, Poecilia reticulata, are specializations for maternal-embryonic nutrient transfer and that the egg envelope, follicular epithelium, and underlying capillary network form the maternal component of the follicular placenta. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Northern pike (Esox lucius) spawning habitat and egg mortality were studied in three spawning areas in 2001 along the Swedish coast of the Baltic proper: the Blekinge Archipelago, Kalmar Sound and coastal freshwater streams. Spawning peaked during the last week of April in streams, at temperatures ranging from 7.7 to 8.9 °C and during the first week of May in brackish waters, at temperatures ranging from 8.9 to 13.8 °C. Spawning occurred in shallow waters, at depths between 0.2–1.5 m, but generally most of the spawn was found in the shallowest areas. In streams, eggs were mainly attached to emersed vegetation, while in brackish sites pike eggs were well scattered among flooded emersed plants, submersed plants and filamentous algae. Mean egg density varied between 469–1829 m–2 with the lowest density observed in Kalmar Sound. The calculated egg loss occurring from approximately one day after spawning to one day before hatching ranged from 41±7% in coastal streams to 67±6% in the Blekinge Archipelago and 100% in Kalmar Sound. The significant removal of eggs from spawning sites in Kalmar Sound and Blekinge was most likely due to predation from several fish species. In situ observations and stomach analyses suggested that many pike eggs in Kalmar Sound were lost to the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a species that presently dominate the littoral small fish community. This study therefore suggests that egg predation by sticklebacks and other fishes may be a possible cause of the reported poor recruitment of coastal pike populations in the Kalmar Sound region.  相似文献

The dwarf morph of the Lake Tanganyika cichlid Telmatochromis temporalis uses empty snail shells as shelters and breeding sites in shell beds, in which many empty shells exist. Here, we assessed selection forces regulating body size in this fish. Field observations showed that large males tended to have a greater number of females in their territories, suggesting that sexual selection favours large males. Nonetheless, a transplant experiment suggested that male body size was limited by the ability to hide in empty shells from large piscivorous fish. In females, the number of ovarian eggs increased with body size, suggesting that fecundity selection favours large females. However, females are smaller than males. Females spawned eggs close to the apices inside the shells. The small space there would decrease the risk of egg predation by egg predators, and small body size of females may be a result of adaptation to spawn eggs in the small, safe spaces. This study provides support for the idea that male and female body sizes have been limited by different ecological pressures (predation on adult fish in males, predation on eggs in females), which has not been reported previously in any animal.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of developing ovarian follicles inside the panoistic ovarioles of Habrophlebia eldae were examined to observe the events occurring during egg maturation up to the full formation of the chorionic envelopes. The early vitellogenic follicles are coupled by gap junctions and are extensively interlocked with the oocyte plasma membrane via microvilli. With the onset of vitellogenesis, coated pits and coated vesicles are precursors to yolk deposition and are visible at the follicle cell-oocyte interface. Postvitellogenic development entails the deposition of the egg envelopes. The vitelline envelope arises from the coalescence of rectangular plaques whose precursors are visible in Golgi complexes as heterogeneous electron-opaque granules. A chorionic pattern of ridges on the egg surface characterizes the shell of H. eldae. The fully developed chorion shows three distinct regions with differently organized patterns. A fine layer of fibrous material (a secretion of the follicle cells, Ephemeroptera devoid of accessory glands) adheres to the egg chorion and is probably involved in attachment to the substrate.  相似文献

Paysandisia archon (Burmeister, 1880) is an attractive neotropical castniid moth whose presence in Europe was recently reported. Its larvae are endophagous, feeding inside the trunks and branches of several species of palm trees (Arecaceae). The present paper deals with the morphology and biometry of the egg of this moth, comparing them with those of other castniid species.

The egg is a typical castniid egg, fusiform, upright sensu Döring, light cream or creamy pink when freshly laid, 4.69 ± 0.37 mm long and 1.56 ± 0.11 mm wide. Larvae emerge by gently splitting the chorion along one of the longitudinal ridges, on the half closer to the micropyle. SEM, TEM and LSCM photographs showing ultrastructural details of the egg are shown for the first time. The micropylar rosette (c. 54 μm in diameter) has generally 14–17 cells; in its centre lies the micropylar pit (c. 6 μm in diameter) which bears 12–16 micropylar canal openings (= micropyles) around its periphery. The pathways followed by those canals through the chorion have been figured. Eggs sampled in the wild (so laid by several females) were found to have a slightly variable number of ridges: most bore seven ridges (68.87%), although a significant portion (30.46%) bore eight and 1 egg (0.67%) bore only six; this against the currently accepted rule of five‐ridged eggs for Castniini (i.e. Neotropical castniids) to which Paysandisia archon belongs. It has also been found that the same female specimen has the capability of producing six‐, seven‐ or eight‐ridged eggs. Five types of egg irregularities affecting the longitudinal ridges are also figured and described. Transverse striae on the egg of P. archon are about 122. Aeropyles (c. 4 μm in diameter) occur on the ridges, at the intersections between the latter and two contiguous (left and right of the ridge) transverse striae, amounting to c. 854 on a seven‐ridged egg and to c. 976 on an eight‐ridged egg. Occasionally minute aeropyles ('microaeropyles') (c. 1.96–3.13 μm in diameter) also occur on transverse striae located close to both egg poles.

The chorion of P. archon shows the typical ditrysian fine structure with very thin basal layer (C‐1), 0.3–0.2 μm thick, gas‐filled trabecular layer (C‐2), c. 0.9 μm thick, and lamellar layer (C‐3), its thickness varying between 18.5 and 13 μm due to the bumpy external surface of the chorion. Aeropylar canals, that penetrate layer C‐3, connect the air‐containing inner chorionic meshwork (the trabecular layer C‐2) with the surrounding air; their outer part forms a big bulbous cavity (which opens to the outside through the small opening seen in external SEM images) and, underneath, a narrow canal follows, leading into the trabecular layer (C‐2).  相似文献

Aquaculture has brought about increased interest in mass production of marine fish larvae. Problems such as poor egg quality and mass mortality of fish larvae have been prevalent. The intensive incubation techniques that often result in bacterial overgrowth on fish eggs could affect the commensal relationship between the indigenous microflora and opportunistic pathogens and subsequently hamper egg development, hatching, larval health, and ongrowth. Little information about the adherent microflora on fish eggs is available, and the present study was undertaken to describe the microbial ecology during egg development and hatching of two fish species of potential commercial importance in marine aquaculture. Attachment and development of the bacterial flora on cod (Gadus morhua L.) eggs from fertilization until hatching was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The adherent microflora on cod (G. morhua L.) and halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) eggs during incubation was characterized and grouped by cluster analysis. Marked bacterial growth could be demonstrated 2 h after fertilization, and at hatching eggs were heavily overgrown. Members of the genera Pseudomonas, Alteromonas, Aeromonas, and Flavobacterium were found to dominate on the surface of both cod and halibut eggs. The filamentous bacterium Leucothrix mucor was found on eggs from both species. While growth of L. mucor on halibut eggs was sparse, cod eggs with a hairy appearance due to overgrowth by this bacterium close to hatching were frequently observed. Vibrio fischeri could be detected on cod eggs only, and pathogenic vibrios were not detected. Members of the genera Moraxella and Alcaligenes were found only on halibut eggs. Caulobacter and Seliberia spp. were observed attached to eggs dissected from cod ovaries under sterile conditions, indicating the presence of these bacteria in ovaries before spawning. Adherent strains did not demonstrate antibiotic resistance above a normal level. Attempts to regulate the egg microflora by incubation of gnotobiotic eggs with defined antibiotic-producing strains did not result in persistent protection against subsequent colonization by the microflora of the incubator.  相似文献

An anadromous population (trachurus form) and three freshwater populations (leiurus form) of the three-spined stickleback,Gasterosteus aculeatus, in central Japan were compared with one another in the reproductive traits: body length at maturity, egg size, clutch size, the swell of abdomen and the number of eggs per nest. The anadromous fish which become larger in body size at maturity spawn eggs smaller in size and greater in number than the freshwater fish. The abdomen swell of gravid females expressed by the proportion of abdomen width to body length was greater in the freshwater fish. The anadromous male fish collected a mean of 2,638 eggs with a range of 1,119 to 4,052 eggs from about 6–7 females. In the three freshwater (the Yamayoke, the Tsuya and the Jizo) populations, males must have mated with about 9–22, 7–18 and 4–7 females respectively. It seems that theleiurus form increases its reproductive success by its much more mating opportunities and the parental efforts of nesting males as well as by spawning large eggs. Furthermore, among the freshwater populations, the Jizo one inhabiting the upper stream was clearly larger in body size, in egg size and in clutch size than the Yamayoke and the Tsuya ones which inhabit stable waterbodies with springs. It is possible that the Jizo population adopted the strategy of spawning a few large eggs as an adaptation to its habitat. The causal and functional explanations in reproductive characteristics among the four populations are discussed in regard to differences in the environmental conditions.  相似文献

Summary The inner epithelium of the ovary wall in Dendrochirus brachypterus does not take part in egg production, as it does in other teleosts. The epithelium consists of columnar cells rich in mitochondria and secretory organelles. The distal ends of these cells hang free in the ovary lumen, separated from each other and densely covered by large microvilli. During reproduction the epithelium secretes large amounts of mucus that forms an envelope around the eggs produced from a spongy stroma of the ovary, and keeps the spawn afloat for 24 h.Thanks are due to Mrs. H. Segal and Mr. N. Sharon for technical assistance, and Mr. D. Fridman, for help during the collection of the fish. Also appreciation is given to the technicians of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory of Tel-Aviv University for help in preparation of electron and scanning microscope figures  相似文献

This study deals with the formation of vitelline envelope (VE) and chorion compartments in several free living and parasitic acaridid mites. In all investigated mites, the VE is of primary origin (produced by oocyte itself), whereas exochorion material is of tertiary origin (oviduct or chorion gland secretion). In acarid mites Acarus siro and Tyrophagus perniciosus, VE formation starts with the oviductal oocytes in which vitellogenesis already proceeds. It is characterized by stratification (Acarus) or coarse fibrillar texture (Tyrophagus). Oocyte microvilli penetrating VE material were not observed. When the vitellogenesis terminates, VE becomes homogeneous and is transformed into chorion. This is the only layer protecting the deposited egg in A. siro, whereas in T. perniciosus the chorion-coated eggs passing through the distal portion of the oviduct are additionally covered by exochorion material deposited in three distinct forms: dense patches, granules, and most conspicuous locular chambers. In Tyrophagus longior, the egg surface closely resembles that of T. perniciosus, but the locular chambers are smaller. In Aleuroglyphus ovatus the exochorion material forms tiny spherical patches instead of locular chambers. In Sarcoptes scabiei, Notoedres cati and Falculifer rostratus, flocculent VE appears on vitellogenic oocytes in the oviduct. VE development is characterized by formation of numerous lenticular perivitelline spaces, which initially grow to disappear later. Then VE material transforms into fully homogeneous chorion. Chorion glands in Sarcoptes and Notoedres produce multivesicular secretory bodies; their content is released onto the egg surface to form a vesicular monolayer (exochorion) during the egg passage. The chorion gland in Falculifer is composed of two secretory cell types. Its secretion possibly glues the eggs to the host feather barb during highly ordered deposition, and forms the appendage ending with a ribbed plate, here considered to be a print of female undulate lamina acting as an ovipositor. The hatching suture is present. Neither distinct micropyle nor aeropyles have been found in eggs of species under study. The exochorion is proposed to be an adhesive layer which fixes the eggs to the substratum. The same role plays the chorion gland secretion in F. rostratus. It can be argued, however, that locular chambers of Tyrophagus exochorion may participate in reduction of water loss rather than in egg adherence or plastron respiration, as previously suggested in the literature.  相似文献
